Using our defintions of generic and iconic we developed a list of places we believed to be iconic, with the rest of Trafford Park becoming generic. To confirm our assumptions, we conducted interviews with members of the public. We decided upon six locations as iconic and then determined a route between each space to show the generic spatial fabric within Trafford Park.

Planning how we planned:

For our planning process we had to decide on methods of recording the generic and iconic elements through the medium of film. To do so, we created a draft storyboard as shown, which determined the type of scenes and editing necessary. The story board did not need to cover the entire film, as the arrangement could be repeated throughout.

Action

how we recorded:

Generic:

iconic:

To gather the footage for our film we recorded a continuous travelling shot as we drove along our generic route and a series of timelapse shots at each iconic location.

To record the generic elements of trafford park we mounted a GoPro camera to the windscreen of our car and drove our predetermined route. We chose to drive through Trafford Park due to the large scale of the site and under the premise that this is the way in which most people view the site as they travel through.

To record the iconic elements of trafford park we took an hour long timelapse at each site. By doing this we were able to record the visual composition of the iconic site whilst also showing how the site operates over time including: who uses the site, how many people use the site and if the site itself changes over time.

Editing

Carto Andy Croft

how we edited:

arrangement:

clip speed:

timelapse:

Once we had all of our footage, we use adobe premiere pro and after effects to arrange and edit it. We organised and cut the footage where neccessary whilst adding transitions, titles and pan and zoom effects.

We used premiere pro’s slicing, cue and scrubbing capabilities to cut the generic footage when we reached an iconic site, and insered the iconic timelapse.

We used premiere pro’s playback speed editing to increase the generic footage speed. This made the footage a suitable length without losing any content.

We imported our jpeg images to premiere pro and used an auto arrange feature to create a 30 second clip from our images.

transitions:

pan & Zoom:

Audio:

We added a simple transition to cut between the generic and iconic scenes. We felt the transition which displays as a digital interference suited our film style best

We applied a corner pan and zoom effect at certain points within the generic footage to emphasise specific generic elements that recurred throughout the site

We chose an instrumental track for our video as background music that complimented the footage. The track was cut and lengthened in ableton studio and then applied in premiere pro

Group Contribution

Carto Andy Croft

my contribution:

As our group consisted of only three members, the workload was shared throughout. During the initial discussions regarding how to approach the task, we operated together, sharing ideas and thoughts and deciding which methods were best. We used our sketchbooks to work through some of these ideas, and at this point i suggested working from a storyboard to organise and plan our recording. Once we had our methodology of what we needed to film and how to film it we set upon determining the iconic and generic elements. I provided the theory at this stage from relevant news and journal articles found online and within MMU’s journal archive. The group agreed the theoretical basis was strong, and we then put forward our thoughts on which spaces and places adhered to the iconic definition. Once we had chosen our six sites I suggested a route using a shared google map, which the group then adjusted accordingly until we reached an agreement. All of the filming was carried out together as we travelled around the site, so each of us knew the sites personally and knew the outcome of the footage. After this we began the editing process, which we again completed as a group. All members were present whilst editing and arranging the footage, however certain elements were completed by the group member who had the footage stored on their laptop, as it was inconvenient to transfer all the files between the group. At this stage My input involved operating the software to make slices and add effects, however the largest role i took on was the audio. I presented a choice of audio to the group which everyone agreed upon immediately, and therefore i began to edit the audio match the footage. This process involved creating loops of certain parts of the audio to lengthen the track time, whilst also editing the track so the timbre and crescendo’s matched the footage.
