In Manchester heritage - from the 80’s anthems Everyone knows Manchester has a historically huge musical from those two Gallaghers. And from the Stone Roses and The Smiths to the Britpop classics moment, so you can say “Yeah, I saw erm, Simply Red…Here is the pick of our favourites at the em first, I was down at the front, man...” This devastatingly young all-female rock group are so good that it’s bound to depress some of their older peers. Equal parts War Paint and PJ Harvey, PINS have are capable of great depth but also have an excellent ear for simpler punk tunes.

PINS TWB are terrifying punk rock dinosaurs riding surfboards and providing a fine mix of old school punk and west coast garage. Picture the Ramones goosing the Shadows in a Bronx alleyway while Clifford Richard looks on in horror. www.facebook.com/twowoundedbirds

Two Wounded Birds BB are a two piece garage band playing refreshingly simple and sickeningly filthy rock songs. You can’t ever hear any of the vocals which is a good thing because they’re probably about snails and bugs and stuff.

Beautiful and touching shoegaze with sweet vocals and all wrapped in a thick layer of synth. For the intellectual class among you who love nothing more but to brood and dwell in their rock and roll. www.swaysrecords.com/ greatwaves

Brown Brogues Money In the early months of Money’s conception their continuous name changes and disregard for social media made PR men swoon at the genius of such a successful anti-marketing campaign. In reality the band are simply a rare example of an act becoming popular on the strength of their touching live performances. www.facebook.com/courtesyisafallacy

The Deadbeat Echoes play a heavy sort of rock which is perhaps better described as alternative than indie. The heavy Manchester accent present on the vocals might put you in mind of a band like Kasabian, but the syncopated rhythms and heavy guitar work put them somewhere between The Stone Roses and Zeppelin.

The Deadbeat Echoes

What do you get when you cross a South Manchester council estate with white dub reggae, the best parts of indie, punk, rap and ska? The Janice Graham Band have taken that Northern swagger most commonly associated with (dare I say it) Oasis, but they apply it to a sound with genuine originality.
