Idiot Abroad TV Special Announced:

The Short Way Round

Ricky Gervais is to send his to favourite people, Warwick Davis and Karl Pilkington on a trip around the globe the new Idiot Abroad special: The Short Way Round. The two hour long episodes, which are to be showcased on Sky One later this year, will feature much more of the baldy Mancunian’s trademark moaning as well as anecdotes from Davis about being a short person in different countries. ‘Karl once said to me that opposites attract,’ said Gervais, ‘Warwick Davis is sociable, hardworking and never complains. They should get along fine.’

Can you live below the line? A charity is challenging people in the UK to live on less than one pound a day to help raise awareness of extreme poverty. Below The Line are raising money to help the 1.4 billion people in the world who live on this income. You can take part by spending just one pound on food and drink each day between the 7th and 11th of May. If nothing else it will be a good excuse to lose weight and make that uni loan stretch a little bit further. Livebelowtheline.com/uk.

Man Jailed For Wearing Jeans Obnoxiously Low A resident of Alabama spent three days in jail for wearing low slung jeans to court. A Judge ruled that Lamarcus D. Ramsey’s trousers were so low that they were in contempt of court. Judge John Bush recommended that the offender should buy a belt when he gets out so that his underwear isn’t on show, or at least ‘buy some pants that fit’.

OnTheBig Screen bits The best at the pictures this month.

Let’s be honest, writing film previews without seeing the film is a bit of a bloody guess. So here’s my round up of May. The opinions contained in these previews are my own and might be utter bollocks. But in reality we choose to go see a film based on trailers, the odd

poster and word of mouth. So I have done the leg work for you this month and here’s a few that I like the look of. Any studio execs reading? Feel free to send Wireless a preview DVD so we can write an accurate preview/ flog it down the pub.

Juan of the Dead 4th May

A clever satirical look at the long strained relationship between Cuba and the United States. A U.S. sponsored Zombie invasion threatens Havana and it’s up to a Latin version of Simon Pegg

The Raid 18th May

Welsh Director Gareth Evans returns to the martial arts genre with what is tipped to be the action film of the year. There’s a very simple premise, 20 elite Indonesian SWAT cops must take down a

mobster boss. To do this the cops must fight their way floor by floor up a heavily defended 30 floor tenement block. Recon they will all make it out alive for Buds and Buffalo wings? No nonsense, just action, if you’re a fan of the genre you do not want to miss this one.

(Juan) to stop it. The f i l m successfully mocks the politics of both the Castro regime and the U.S. simultaneously. If you have never read a History book it’s a funny Zomcom, for the rest of you it’s a bloody clever funny Zomcom.

How I Spent My Summer Vacation The Dictator 11th May 16th May Mel Gibson takes a break

from his drunken disorderly anti-semitic rants to return to his bread and butter. A bit like Falling down takes a field trip to Mexico. Expect Sombreros, grenades and police chases. Fans of Payback and Lethal Weapon will be in for a treat. Fans of the Passion and Apocalypto can expect... oh hang on, this applies to no one. Gibson back to his best

as a zany violent lunatic. Come to think of it, in all his good films he plays a zany violent lunatic. Does this count as acting?

Sacha Baron Cohen returns in the heroic story of a dictator who risks his life to ensure that democracy would never come to the country he so lovingly oppressed. Yes please!

HIGHLIGHTS & LOW POINTS

BRISTOL

The Cribs – 9th May @ O2 Academy – They were well-known simply for being underrated so it’s somewhat ironic that their fifth album is one of the most anticipated this year. This show is scheduled two days after its release so you’ll have just enough time to hear it at home before seeing it live. White Denim – 21st May @ O2 Academy – This shouty Texas ensemble started out making raucous punk noise but since then have experimented with dance and world music influences. The Milk – 31st May @ The Cooler – White boy soul music with and indie twist. The band is quickly gaining momentum so go and see what all fuss is about. Newton Faulkner – 5th May @ O2 Academy – The boring dreadlocked songwriter is playing as part of the Bristol Folk Festival which may be a good event in itself but Faulkner is way too oatmeal to write about any longer.

HIGHLIGHTS & LOW POINTS

CARDIFF

The Horrors – 20th May @ Cardiff University Students Union – Described by Manics’ Nicky Wire as the closest thing we’ve got to a proper rock band, The Horrors have never been on such good form. If you still haven’t seen them jump at the chance. Mumford And Sons – 30th May @ St. David’s Hall – Folk revivalists Mumford And Sons play some phenomenally touching live shows, so much so that it’s not unheard of for fans to burst into tears. In a good way though. Westlife – 17th May @ Cardiff Motorpoint Arena – Another month and another shit 90s boy band reunion tour. Westlife have said that this will be a ‘farewell’ tour but so have the Rolling Stones every year for the last thirty, and if you can’t trust a bunch of drug-addled geriatric millionaires who can you trust? HIGHLIGHTS & LOW POINTS Tragedy, A Metal Tribute To The Bee Gees – 27th May @ Sin City – Tragedy does what it says on the tin really, and just from the concept they could be the greatest tribute act in human history. You’ll be surprised to find that the hard rock versions of some Bee Gees songs are better than anything Kiss ever wrote.

The Wedding Present – 27th May @ Bath Racecourse – The Wedding Present were an integral part of the Manchester music scene in the mid-80s and were championed by John Peel for their beautifully sincere tales of love. Imagine a sonic combination of the Buzzcocks and the Smiths and you’ll get the picture. Toploader – 12th May @ Sin City – Dancing in the moon light everybody’s feeling warm and bright it’s such a fine and natural sight everybody’s dancing in the moonlight. Sing the last sentence aloud and it should save you the ticket price of this gig.
