As it is our first issue I will tell you a little about myself and why I decided on starting Aneis de Vida – the circle of light. From an age point, I am heading toward the half century, but that is just a figure and really not too relevant in my opinion. It is all in the way you as an individual view yourself and the world at large. I have a beautiful daughter, who is my pride and joy, and of whom I am extremely proud. As young as she is, more often than not she makes more sense in her way of thinking than many adults. I have truly been blessed by having her in my life. Furthermore, I am a very big animal activist – animals have the purest of souls, they love without expecting anything in return. I have two dogs and a cat (one dog and one cat are rescues) – so yes, I will say openly, please support a local shelter and go and adopt a precious soul who is in need of a loving home. Why this magazine – well, in all honesty, the world as it stands today needs something to give people inspiration, from the very young to the not so young. People do at times feel lost or even abandoned, and hopefully in our magazine you will find hope, laughs and love radiating out to you, be it on-line in our e-mag or when paging through the beautiful pages. We, the team at Aneis de Vida, are so excited and have so many wonderful ideas and stories to share with all of you.

What can I say, when Tilanie asked me to be a part of Aneis de Vida, I didn’t have to think about it. Having worked on magazines before, and being on my own spiritual journey I am feeling both excited and blessed to add The Circle of Light to my “travel plans”. I hope that as a team we can intrigue, enlighten and inspire you on your way.

As for me, I am a mother of two amazingly compassionate children – who I learn from every day. Isn’t it amazing how they I would also like to take this opportunity to manage to do that? They master express my deepest thanks to all the technology before we get our heads people who have been involved with around it and their innocence exudes. bringing this dream to fruition – too many to name individually! willing to listen – that however is a whole other story. To Tilanie, thank you for thinking of me when you decided to set forth on this amazing venture. To those of you who have contributed and have helped along the way – we could not be here without you. Lastly, to my husband and children thank you for your patience and understanding along the way to our launch, you may not have realised it but your support was what got me through the difficult days when technology seemingly refused to cooperate. Di Life is hectic...the days just seem to fly by and one wonders where the time went, let alone the year! Technology is getting more advanced by the day, and that in itself is challenging for me. Throughout our hectic schedules we often overlook things, or are no longer aware of what this wonderful universe has to offer us.

I am on the wrong side of 40 and proud of my age! I have lived in a number of towns in KwaZulu Natal as well as moving abroad for a four year stint in Germany. It has allowed me to meet many different people and also experience different cultures. Married to my husband for 25 years now, who is also my best friend, we have two adult daughters. Both my girls have lived abroad by themselves, and we are privileged to have them at home temporarily whilst they study. Yet the time will come when they move on to their next phase of life, which will also signal the start of a new chapter in my own life. Why Aneis de Vida? With all the challenges we face daily in a society where change is the only constant, I firmly believe that Aneis de Vida will provide many with a source of inspiration, hope and peace. The world is not an easy place – it needs a Circle of Light.

a shortened version for "Hallowed Evening" and should rightly be spelled as "Hallowe'en", because this festival was considered hallowed (holy)? Today's Halloween customs are thought to have been influenced by folk customs and beliefs from the Celtic-speaking countries, some of which have pagan roots, and others which may be rooted in Celtic Christianity. Some folklorists have detected its origins in the Roman feast of Pomona, the goddess of fruits and seeds, or in the festival of the dead called Parentalia, it is more typically linked to the Celtic festival of Samhain, which comes from the Old Irish for "summer's end". This head symbolism also pertained to “The Noble Head” of Bran the Blessed whose head lays beneath the tower of London to protect the land from invasion. The illuminated turnips were placed in the window to protect the family in the same way. In some regions this tradition included the placing of squash or turnips around the garden to keep all unwanted supernatural beings outside of this circle of protection.

In modern Ireland, Scotland, Mann and Wales, the festival included mumming and guising, the latter of which goes back at least as far as the 16th century. This involved people going house-to-house in costume (or in disguise), usually reciting verses or songs in exchange for food.

The lovely Cape Mellow is this month’s feature, with its small delicate looking flowers of pale pink and white, with a dash of bright pink in the center. This plant can grow free in your garden or be potted (make sure you have a big enough pot for it to grow to its full beautiful potential). Planting in a pot is perhaps not a bad idea as it can be moved around to have the full benefit of the wonderful sunshine.

Botanical name: Anisodontea Bloom color: Pink/white Bloom time: Spring and summer Light Full sun to semi shade

Height: 4-6' (1-2 m) Special Features Garden or containers and are low maintenance plants Dangers: Unknown Best Soil: Highly alkaline Considering the cold winter we have had this year in South Africa, everyone is just too happy to be able to get out into their gardens and do some planting and to feel that glorious sunshine pelting down from the sky. So every month there will be an article talking about a specific plant, shrub, or tree. Hopefully all you gardening enthusiasts will enjoy this page and do send in photos of your gardens and information that you may feel is relevant. We will endeavor to make sure that the information we give explains whether it is a plant suitable for the northern or southern hemisphere or both, considering we have many e-mag readers in the northern part of the globe.

October 2014

It is native to South Africa and can grow up to 5ft, even though it looks rather delicate like the hibiscus, it is a hardy shrub rather drought resistant, evergreen perennial shrub. Fast growing with abundant beautiful flowers throughout the growing season. The cape mellow is also loved by bees, so if you are allergic to bee stings make sure it is in a part of the garden that you do not have to frequent often. On a positive note regarding the bees though, this is a way to preserve our bees in the world and therefore continue with cross pollination. The cape mallow grows well in most areas, however, they best like sunny areas with well-drained, fertile soil. As stated before they are drought resistant so do not need a lot of water, but for best growth, modest watering is recommended. It is a good idea to fertilize occasionally, and not to water much during the winter months to give the plant a bit of a rest before spring. Prune during the winter months of July and August for a bushier growth in the spring. There are few problems with the cape mallow as it is a tough shrub and disease resistant. They are susceptible to a fungus – mallow rust. This fungi produces blisters on the leaves, causing the leaf to turn yellow, wither and die. Though this does not do any major damage to the plant, it does appear unsightly so just trim those areas and you will once again have a glorious cape mallow to look at.

an areas, across roads, through shops and the like. But what is it REALLY like to be partner to one of these amazing animals? They really are amazing; over two years of extensive home-based training (from a weeks of age, they live with a puppy raiser, before going to live with our dedicated and very knowledgeable training manager for another year to learn how to guide). After an initial short ‘matching walk’, and a positive confirmation of a match, the exciting wait begins before training with the new dog. Three weeks of very intensive work ensues, becoming more and more complex until dog and handler carry out an observed solo walk in a progressively busier area, proving our ability to work safely with each other. This is where the journey really begins! A positive result means we are ‘qualified’, we are safe to be left alone! That first walk all alone, no trainer to watch over us, is one of the BEST, proudest feelings in the world.

Every day, I thank God (and Pathfinder Dogs) for the blessing that is Kambo. More than safe mobility, I have a very special, much loved friend. My name is Tony Barclay; I am registered blind, with less than 4% visual field in my left eye (I can just make out one character on a computer keyboard). I am also companion to Kambo, a 4 year old German Shepherd, trained by Pathfinder Guide Dog Programme, a small charity (not-for-profit) organisation based in Scotland. Kambo and I are the only Pathfinder partnership in Ireland – and are very well recognised!

Almost two years after qualifying, where are we now? From total strangers, thrown together in a three week ‘class’, we are now, quite simply…. The very best, closest of friends. I am very happily married to my soul mate, yet Kambo probably knows and understands me as well as (if not better) than Emma, my wife, does. Kambo knows my moods, picks up on my anxieties – such as busy areas, crossing busy roads – and I in turn understand him too. He is a complex dog, indeed VERY complex. He can be challenging at times, with a penchant for wanting to chase trains – and we live very close to a railway line! For all his complexities, I love him to bits, and he in turn would give his life for me. Wherever I go, in the house or out, he is my constant companion, my shadow. Whenever we go out – for it is rarely ‘me’ – he is there, touching me with his nose, ready to go wherever the wind takes us.

communicate with us? Perhaps there is some primeval fear of not being able to see, a subconscious dread of the unknown? Whatever the reason, I have experienced great loneliness, even in busy places, with no dog and only a white cane. With Kambo, I am never alone, wherever I am. Day or night, home or away, he is my friend, my confidante, in whom I place all my trust, my life, and with whom I share so many things. In return, Kambo places his trust in me, looks to me for his care, from a good grooming to food; from play time to being able to sleep close to his loving human. He is more than a dog. He is more than a guide. He is… my best friend, with me 24/7, as much a part of me as I am of him. Without him, I am lost (sometimes literally). With him, I am strong, confident, safe. Every day, I thank God (and Pathfinder Dogs) for the blessing that is Kambo. More than safe mobility, I have a very special, much loved friend. He has a place all of his own deep in my heart, a place that will always be…… Kambo.

When I was a child, I was always chatting. My earliest memories where chatting away to someone that no one else seemed to hear or see. Now I do come from a large family of 5 children, me being the youngest, but never spent much time with most of my older siblings. They didn’t want to be bothered with a little brat hanging around. My ‘grandma’ was another story though, she loved just listening to me chat, not involved in the conversations, just listening and sometimes putting in her ten cents worth.

“Can you imagine connecting to that wonderful world again, and knowing the answers will just be there, waiting for you, a REAL conversation just like when you were a kid. Delving into that magical world, that others told you was ‘make believe‘, ‘imaginary’ ..... Think about it “make believe”

October 2014

This is how I came to know my spirit guide and gate keeper who is called “ A-ten-Ar” just chatting to a flower in the garden one day and there he was telling me how to make it better.... being 4 years old, I was not surprised, or shocked, it just was. Didn’t EVERYONE have “people” like this ? I was programmed by parents, teachers, friends, peer groups at such a young and impressionable age, that I sometimes forget these wonderful memories from my childhood. All is not lost, just forgotten, and it never ever surprised me when even after ignoring him for months on end, he would pop up in my head again when I needed him most.

Sometimes at inopportune moments at school, or one I remember quite clearly.... in a poetry recital ... that is a whole ‘other story’ , but if nothing else he could ALWAYS make me smile and feel warm like toes near an open fire on a cold night , and he still does.

then you try it again and again, and it is really like a new toy, something to enjoy and have fun with .... Something to explore like a treasure hunt of thinking patterns, so go with the flow. I also know when he has something for me to tell someone else..... This is when it is exciting ...., but believing in what you Just a thought here, A-ten-Ar is saying as I hear and sharing it is always more difficult type: “Can you imagine connecting to that than it seems, it is just me listening to vague voices in my head ....... the more wonderful world again, and knowing the you converse with that voice, the more answers will just be there, waiting for you will FEEL the difference between your you, a REAL conversation just like when thoughts and theirs. Delving into that magical journey, and takes some courage when world, that others told you was ‘make starting out, but trust in the Universe, and believe‘, ‘imaginary’ ..... Think about it believe in yourself. Enjoy the journey! “make believe”, absolutely true, make it happen by believing..... “Imaginary”, is an image in your mind you bring to life Fortunately for me my reprogram button never worked too well, much to my delight and my family’s horror. I have had my friend A-ten Ar with me my entire life, well he says my entire life, I can only really remember from about 4 years old to be honest. As I got older, I did begin to notice differences though, the way he thinks and the way I think, the way I can ask a question and he will have the answer at the tip of his tongue ... or make me work harder to find the answer , just because I need to. The funniest is asking him questions in the supermarket or walking down through the malls. In the good old days, I would get weird looks, like I needed a nice extra-long sleeved jacket, or asked if I was OK! These days it is so much easier with people walking and talking through their blue tooth fancy phones, most people look like they are talking to an invisible person. I suppose in a way we are no different, we chat to others via the phone , we don’t see them , but we know they are there, same with me and A-ten-Ar, we just have a direct line, no blue tooth needed......

Hearing the differences, is quite a bolt to the mind set at first, you often think, ok seriously I am crazy, they are all right, but

Okay so the rules are 1. Always talk to the voices in your head 2. Try to remember not to answer out loud in a supermarket 3. Trust the answers are for the best of all concerned 4. Get to know the differences in your thoughts and theirs.... because you surely will. October 2014

A little girl was talking to her eacher about whales. A Little Christian Humour Jesus and Satan were having an on-going argument about who was better on the computer. They had been going at it for days, and frankly God was tired of hearing all the bickering.

Finally fed up, God said, 'THAT'S IT! I have had enough. I am going to set up a test that will run for two hours, and from those results, I will judge who does the better job.' So Satan and Jesus sat down at the keyboards and typed away. They moused. They faxed. They e-mailed. They e-mailed with attachments. They downloaded. They did spreadsheets! They wrote reports. They created labels and cards. They created charts and graphs. They did some genealogy reports . They did every job known to man. Jesus worked with heavenly efficiency and Satan was faster than hell. Then, ten minutes before their time was up, lightning suddenly flashed across the sky, thunder rolled, rain poured, and, of course, the power went off.

Satan stared at his blank screen and screamed every curse word known in the underworld. Jesus just sighed. Finally the electricity came back on, and each of them restarted their computers. Satan started searching frantically, screaming: 'It's gone! It's all GONE! 'I lost everything when the power went out!' Meanwhile, Jesus quietly started printing out all of his files from the past two hours of work. Satan observed this and became irate. 'Wait!' he screamed. 'That's not fair! He cheated! How come he has all his work and I don't have any?' God just shrugged and said, JESUS SAVES....

Ellie could not believe her eyes and she called out to him, “Gerald, oh Gerald, what are you doing up there in the tree?” Gerald nervously looked down at Ellie, who didn’t know if she should laugh or cry and said, “I am looking to see whether I can see the weekend Ellie… Jennifer said she would come back when the next weekend comes.” Well, Ellie laughed so much she had to sit down. She coaxed Gerald out of the tree and then explained to him what the word “weekend” actually meant. Gerald blinked sheepishly and giggled a bit at his own silliness. If you would like to consult with The Oracle please drop us an email with your question oracle@aneisdevida.co.za selected questions with answers will be published in our next issue. It is so interesting to read the article on the lavender uses, but for interest sake what are the reactions one should be aware of? Anne Whitney – UK Dear Anne, well in general terms as we know anyone can have a reaction to anything at any given time. The basic is not being able to breathe properly, itchiness and if for instance as lavender is supposed to calm you, you become more agitated. Those are the basic reactions. Few and far between but can happen. And if you do have a reaction please consult your medical practitioner immediately. I am interested in becoming more spiritual, what are the dos and don’ts that I should know about? Susan – South Africa Dear Susan, interesting question indeed. Firstly being spiritual has nothing to do with religion, it is something within you. Each creature on earth has a soul. That is the most important part to know. Everyone is able to connect to a higher power, no one is more able than the other, and it is just the way in which we allow this to happen. And most of us have forgotten how. My best suggestion is to start reading about spirituality, then start appreciating all the beauty around you and meditate on a regular basis. Now I need to stress that none of these things interfere with your religion if you are a religious person, it will aid you to tap into your inner being. Good luck with your journey of self-discovery

I am very interested in learning more about crystals and herbs. The problem is that I am a Christian and some of my friends believe that it is evil to make use of especially crystals. Daniella – Durban, SA Dear Daniella, Firstly both herbs and crystals were formed in the Earth. God created the Earth, crystals, herbs and us. In knowing that simple fact, we should know that both crystals and herbs are not evil. Crystals are formed by pressure and heat on minerals within the layers of the Earth. Each crystal contains a different mineral which can be used in ways to heal our bodies. The same goes for herbs. We are simply learning to use their properties in a way that is beneficial to our health as an addition to what doctors have prescribed. To make it even simpler, we know that oranges contain vitamin C and this helps our bodies to combat viruses. It is not evil to eat an orange, therefore it cannot possibly be evil to make use of crystals and herbs.

prived, but those with psychiatric conditions are even more likely to be yawning or groggy during the day. Chronic sleep problems affect 50% to 80% of patients in a typical psychiatric practice, compared with 10% to 18% of adults in the general U.S. population. Sleep problems are particularly common in patients with anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

That extract from the Harvard Study shows how important sleep is. Let us look at the benefits of sleep. In a normal sleep cycle, people flex between two categories of sleep. Quiet sleep, which is a deep sleep where the body temperature decreases, the muscles relax completely and heart and breathing rates slow down. The deepest part of quiet sleep is when the body produces physiological changes to help boost the immune system. The other part of the sleep cycle is the dream cycle, or REM (rapid eye movement). During this

period the heart rate, breathing and temperature of the body once again increases to a point like when they are awake. Studies have shown that the REM period of sleep aids in learning and memory and contributes to emotional health.

Scientists have discovered that sleep disturbances, which affect the neurotransmitters and stress hormones, cause major problems in the brain. There are more than 70 different kinds of sleep disorders, the most common being insomnia, obstructive sleep apnoea, movement syndromes (restlessness), and falling asleep suddenly during the day. Studies have shown that most people with depression suffer from insomnia and one in five people suffer from obstructive sleep apnoea. If you don’t sleep properly you are at a higher risk of developing depression. People who suffer from depression,

and do not sleep well are more likely to consider suicide than those who have depression but get reasonable sleep. Another disorder that is increased due to lack of sleep is anxiety, be that due to post traumatic stress, panic attacks, obsessive compulsive disorder or phobias. These are also common in children and teenagers. Insomnia can aggravate symptoms of anxiety or prevent recovery. In a society where ADHD is prevalent in children it has been found that up to 50% have a problem falling asleep, sleep shorter periods and have restless sleep. Sleep is one of the most vital “medicines” available, costing you nothing – except losing a few hours of being productive. However, if one considers the immense damage the lack of sleep can cause, I would say it is worth more than gold itself.

Each of us have our own gift from The Divine, mine is communicating with animals. I have had a unique connection with animals since I was a child. Although I never understood my gift until my teens, it has always been with me. I knew that there was more to what the animals were telling me— and others. As my gift grew or should I say I grew into my gift, I learned about herbs and natural remedies , various forms of psychic communication, aura’s, chakra’s, spiritual healing and crystals.

I tweaked my abilities under the wing of my mentor. I must admit that when she released me into the world—that was the moment that I really began to learn. I, as many others had to realise The Divine power within me and had to take steps to use my gift for the greater good of animals. Those who are interested in featuring their fur kid, as our monthly selected Animal Communication, are to email a good quality photograph of their fur child to animals@aneisdevida.co.za. Firstly I want to say that before I even advertised – Princess had already shown herself to me so when you posted her picture I was amazed. She has been around especially this morning and my miniature pinscher has smelled her presence. She shows me pink bows. Pretty powder pink. This could have two meanings – more of a double barrelled meaning. She loved having bows in her hair – you put them in her hair or really made her feel like someone very special and very loved. The colour pink symbolises that she is sending you love. She says don’t cry. She wipes away your tears. She says – “we had an amazing time together you and I. It’s a story for the history books. We have so much more than anyone else... I will always be connected to you. “ I feel that she will be spending time with you in spirit for some time. She will then return to you in body. Was Princess a rescue? She feels that you rescued her. She makes you out to be her knight in shining armour. I feel that when she returns to you - you will rescue her again. It’s very strange, because she shows herself in a different form but that she is with you and will be with you. Her tail wags so much so I can feel the gusts of wind that her tail makes. She is a curious girl. She knows so much and has learned a lot with you. She may have been pampered to the core but she had so much fun! She seems like a pretty girl who had a tomboy streak.

bond with her.

She says that when she passed there was nothing more you could have done for her. You did it all. She makes your presence in her life to be complete – by complete i mean well rounded, you gave her everything and she was everything. She says that she was there for you when no one else was – and she wished she could have given you more – and she will – Did she have some sort of disability? I don’t feel like I have limbs missing or deformed. It’s more like an invisible disability. She shows that this disability disallowed her from giving you the “more” that she talks about. She shows me a room filled with poofy pink and white pillows everything soft – the room seems ethereal. She places herself there. On a pillow. Head up and proud. Tiara shining. She is a princess through and through she is making me smile. She shows how she watched everything you did around her. She says you’re a busy person – never too busy for her though. She is still watching you. She says that you felt her presence but you weren’t sure. I think you were in a kitchen because the way you are moving it seems that you are preparing food. Up and down and a glance and smile at your angel. She says well now you know for sure.

She sends you lots of love. She surrounds you with it. And off she walks... with a “cheers” attitude. Back to my mommy now.

She says that you need to have fun again and when her form changes, you will be in for a treat! I somehow see a Yorkie type face and colouring but slightly bigger. I am not sure if this will be her new form or if this is a friend of hers because she shows the Yorkie dog having a October 2014

We all know of the renowned Macchu Picchu which is classified as one of the 7 wonders of the world. So let us remain in Peru, South America and look at another spiritual power site. Now legend will have us believe that “mountains, earth and wind helped to carry these boulders” – some weighing as much as 300 tons. A further belief was that the city of Cusco was set out in the form of a Puma whose head was the hill of Sacsayhuaman. October 2014

Throughout their history there has been witness to a God named Viracocha, who visited the South American people and blessed them with giving them all types of technology. Interesting are some of his physical characteristics – very tall, pale skinned and with long white hair. So he stood out, and was completely different from the indigenous people. It is possible that he was an “extra-terrestrial” being who gave the ancients technology and knowledge to complete tasks far ahead of their time.

The origins are generally attributed to the period of the Inca Pachacuti, the man who was the founder of the Inca Empire.

Research has found that these boulders brought to the site, were as far away as 75km from Cusco. Thoughts are that Sacsayhuaman, was a royal retreat or fortress or even both. Due to information regarding valuable inside decor, the large and good quality of objects which were kept in old stockrooms of Sacsayhuaman, it would more likely confirm that this was a royal house which was devoted to the worshipping of the sun.

Visitors cannot help being impressed by the beauty and sheer monumental scale of this Inca construction. The stones are so well put together that you would not even be able to squeeze a coin in the cracks. Furthermore, it is built in a three layer terrace using these massive stones. This site also played an important part in the final defeat of the Inca’s by the Spanish in the 1500’s.

From Sacsayhuaman, you have a fantastic view of the sacred city and surrounds. You will also be able to see the summits of Ausangate, Pachatusán and Cinca, places that are believed to home the powerful spirits that rule the mountains.

The Inca ruins of Sacsayhuaman, Qénko, Puca Pucara and Tambomachay are all close together and can generally be seen within half a day.Other interesting sites are: The Temple of the Moon (Laqo being the orginal name), The Temple of the Monkeys (Kusilluchayoq) or hike the Tambanachay trail.

eeriest presence and the worst place for me to enter was the Donker Gat (dark hole) a dungeon used to hold prisoners, who would be chained to the walls and tortured. Tours are taken into the dungeon and the lights are turned off. I was lucky to have a decent tour guide, who allowed me to leave the dungeon before this part of the tour was completed. He explained that when the lights are out, it is not possible to see your hand in front of your face. If the darkness alone was not enough to scare the wits out of prisoners, there is a hole in the floor in the centre of the room. If the captives fell through it they would fall to a certain death. If an extra-large wave came crashing up the shore during high tide, the hole could fill with water within seconds and drown the prisoner chained below. One can imagine the mental anguish of hearing the waves getting louder and louder as the tide rose—hoping the next surge doesn’t fill your watery tomb.

When I was younger, my favourite places to visit was Cape Town. of course The Cape has many heritage sites to visit. Being the oldest surviving colonial building in South Africa, The Cape Town Castle or Castle of Good Hope is not only steeped in our country’s history; it is also well known for visits of the spiritual kind.

According to some stories prisoners held in this windowless cell were left there for days and eventually were brought out blindfolded. Once out in the sunlight the blindfold was removed and the prisoner was forced to look directly at the sun causing them to go blind.

The Castle also has other prison cells which are far kinder in comparison. Once again a presence is palpable. The ringing of an electric bell in the guard a room is connected with a suicide in the earlier part of the twentieth century.

To do this, he ordered a Private to “haunt” the battlements while covered in a sheet. This is a story of animals, humans with hearts as big as the ocean, an organisation, an ad and about making a difference for the animals with whom we share the earth. By Smaragda Louw Ban Animal Trading came to light during the late hours of the night in February 2012. As a member of Beauty Without Cruelty, I was informed by Glynis Vahl Jones about a specific pet shop that had started a franchise for pet shops. Glynis was horrified, and so was I. It was not a difficult decision to make: let’s have a protest! So exciting!

Along came Lisa Fawkes, and this is how it happened: BAT/BWC always asks protestors not to wear leather to a protest, because we really don’t want the public to point fingers at anything we do. We have the moral high ground, and that’s just how it is. Well, Lisa being a motorbike trainer, felt this requirement was a bit harsh, and so she phoned. The discussion went this way and that way, and eventually I had to agree with Lisa: let’s just take it step by step and teach everyone compassion without being Hilteresque. We have Lisa to thank for the BAT tolerance and compassion. (Lisa is now vegetarian, on her way to becoming a vegan).

So BAT hopped along, organising protests at pet shops selling animals, and then suddenly, it was like a can of worms had been opened. Puppy farms, backyard breeders, the online sale of animals, the cruel trade in exotic animals, dog fighting, hunting, the slaughter of billions of The planning for the protest started, animals for food ~ actually, almost accompanied by total naivety about the nything animal related contributes to the real issue at hand. Honestly, how difficult millions of animals who are put to sleep in could it be to make a big noise in front of a South Africa every year. Then we knew pet shop to get them to stop selling that stopping pet shops from selling animals? We would find out soon enough. animals was not about protesting only. It

How we see ourselves is how we treat ourselves and that in turn is how we treat the world we live in, in all its multi-facets. The town of Stanford, a sleepy hollow or maybe not. Situated 1 ½ hours’ drive from Cape Town in the Overberg District and a mere ½ hours’ drive from Hermanus, you will find the farm Springfontein comprising of a winery, guest accommodation and Eats, the restaurant.

At Eats you choose from a 3 – 6 course menu, and you are expecting to pay an arm and a leg but this is not the case, you will get value for money. A culinary experience, add good wine to the list and what more could you ask for. Whilst choosing from the menu, you can change your order from the menu to suit your liking, not too many restaurants offer this to their clientele but this is just one of the fine dining experiences you will have to your ‘’disposal’’. The ingredients for their various dishes are sourced locally and are therefore fresh and organic. Prepared with precision and devotion to a very specific art form, the love of creating mouth-watering dishes to be enjoyed and savoured.

Asking Susanne to describe their various dishes, her answer was ‘’it is very difficult for us to say what our food is like, best course of action is to check what is said on This establishment is owned by 10 friends Trip Advisor’’. So I googled, expecting at who wanted to make changes in their lives, least one customer that felt it was not and for those in the community. Originally quite to their liking. Astonishingly enough Springfontein was a cattle farm, and today

there was not one complaint, and I say astonishing purely because one will generally find one person who cannot be pleased. Not in this case! Susanne and Jürgen have many years of experience in the hospitality industry. Having given up a Michelin acclaimed restaurant in Germany to move to South Africa. Jürgen himself has trained over 100 chefs worldwide, and still continues to train at Springfontein Eats, by giving those from the previously disadvantaged community the opportunity to shine and have a brighter future. It is not a case of just training and then you are a chef. These individuals have to remain with Eats for 3 years, they earn a salary and get experience in waitress/waitressing areas and then to be a world class chef. This is but a small part of what they return to the community in which they live, something we could all take note of at the end of the day.

These are two down to earth people, who enjoy what they do, and that is expressed in the cuisine they offer. With December just around the corner, perhaps you should consider booking a lunch or dinner at Eats, especially if you are in the area.
