Welcome HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!! Oh yes so we have another year ahead of us to do the best that we can, that is such an amazing concept don’t you think? And what are your resolutions for the coming year? I know that Di and I want to make ADV a household name, and make no mistake we are well on our way and we will achieve our goals so here is ‘’moi’’ doing a happy dance for the new year ahead. From my own experience in life I have learnt to look at the glass half full instead of half empty. In this way you achieve two things, a) you keep yourself inspired to carry on and b) you manage to send out good feelings into the world. Don’t get sucked into the doom and gloom, spread the light and the love. It is always easy to bemoan one’s lot in life, but think how fantastic it is to actually put a smile on your face and be grateful you have another day to be the best you there is. We all have set backs but they are just there to say ‘’hey listen up – there is a better road to travel’’. An inspiring 2015 message from Michelle Bell which I know for me personally was an amazing validation of what to expect in the coming year, and if we can all be willing to let go of the old so that you can make space for the new to creep in, then there is so much to look forward to. The articles will again bring you inspira-

tion and give you something positive to hold on to when the rain clouds are creeping in – when they do remember the earth and how that too needs to be fed to bring about the glorious shrubs and trees we so enjoy and often take for granted. Don’t forget to keep note of the answers to win our two day get away prize to the lodge and thanks to MetaVarsity for sponsoring an amazing course to be won, good luck to all who enter.

’HEAVEN’S SPECIAL CHILD’’

A meeting was held quite far from earth It’s time again for another birth, Said the Angels to the Lord above This special child will need much love. Her Progress may seem very slow Accomplishments she may not know, And she’ll require extra care From the folk she meets down there. She may not run and laugh or play Her thoughts may seem quite far away, In many ways she won’t adapt And she’ll be known as handicapped. So let’s be careful where she’s sent We want her life to be content, Please Lord find the parents who, Will do a special job for You. The will not realise right away The leading role they have to play, But with this child sent from God Comes stronger faith and richer love. And soon they’ll know the privilege given In caring for this gift from Heaven, Their precious charge, so meek and mild Is ‘’Heaven’s Very Special Child’’. Much love always: Erica, Tiffany and Demi 07/10/2006

to see her for the first time, to hold her, to love her! But something was wrong. She was delivered with legs wide open they said. Everything was so confusing. Everyone was talking, but not to us. What on earth was the matter with her legs? Still, no-one answered me or even looked at us. We were given a brief moment to hold her, only a moment, because she was whisked off to ICU, and still we were none the wiser. ApparBy Erica Engelbrecht Niepage ently, when a baby is delivered with their legs open, the possibility of DS is high. (This we were told much later). for our lives! Demi was born with Trisomy 21. She has an extra chromosome. She also has a heart defect and while still in the womb, her Oesophagus had grown, but had not joined her stomach, and the same with the Intestines, so the stomach was suspended. Anything given to her via the mouth would never reach her stomach and her bowels would never be able to function either. She was wheeled into theatre that same afternoon at 5pm - they needed to join the bowel (intestines) to the stomach. My head was still swimming, how was I going to cope, what would I tell her when she asked me why Tiffany (my 5 year old) was getting married and she couldn’t? So many questions, no answers. 7 hours later, her Paediatric Surgeon completed the operation successfully. He had managed to join the bowel to the stomach and the oesophagus was rerouted to a small hole in the base of her neck – her saliva would come out of this little hole. He had also made an incision directly into her stomach and inserted a tube through which we would feed her. She was in ICU and was doing fine he said. I was eventually allowed to see her the next morning. To say that I was devastated, was an understatement! Drips in her head. Tubes in the arms, legs and both hands, the only place I could give her a kiss was on her knee. My heart melted and I fell completely in love with this little Angel that was given to me for a reason. Why, I did not know, but she

was mine and she needed me! We would travel this road together, hand in hand and we would conquer the world. Our family was complete and we were going to be just fine - or so I thought. She was allowed home the day she turned a month old. Financial constraints and medical payments due forced me to go back to work after only 4 weeks maternity leave and Mark (my husband) too. But I was blessed with a "Super Mom" who has looked after Demi since then - she did the dayshift, while I worked and I did the nightshift. In November, when Demi was almost 4 months old, she went back into theatre for the repair of the Oesophagus. Another 6 hour successful operation! In the 4 months since her birth, the Oesophagus had grown and they were able to stretch it to join the stomach. They were not able to construct the stomach valve during this operation, which would have to be another trip to theatre a few months later. In the meantime, Demi had to be slightly elevated at all times, in order to keep the stomach contents where they should be! There are no words to describe the feelings and thoughts that are whirling in your head and your heart while your baby is in theatre. Through all of this, she was given no pain medication. Unbelievable! The doctors only told me after they had done each repair. My little Angel earned the nickname of "GI Jane", she endured more than the average adult would endure at the hands of these surgeons

and she graduated with honours. I was a bit worse for wear! The whole episode this far had taken a deadly toll on my marriage and my husband left when Demi was 7 months old. Humour Bert feared his wife Peg wasn't hearing as well as she used to and he thought she might need a hearing aid. Not quite sure how to approach her, he called the family Doctor to discuss the problem. The Doctor told him there is a simple informal test the husband could perform to give the Doctor a better idea about her hearing loss. 'Here's what you do,' said the Doctor, 'stand about 40 feet away from her, and in a normal conversational speaking tone see if she hears you. If not, go to 30 feet, then 20 feet, and so on until you get a response.' That evening, the wife is in the kitchen cooking dinner, and he is in the den. He says to himself, 'I'm about 40 feet away, let's see what happens.' Then in a normal tone he asks, 'Honey, what's for dinner?' No response. So the husband moves closer to the kitchen, about 30 feet from his wife and repeats, 'Peg, what's for dinner?' Still no response. Next he moves into the dining room where he is about 20 feet from his Wife and asks, 'Honey, what's for dinner?' Again he gets no response. So, he walks up to the kitchen door, about 10 feet away. 'Honey, what's for dinner?' Again there is no response. So he walks right up behind her. 'Peg, what's for dinner?'

with the change honestly, but avoid over-exaggerating the good points of the school as your child may feel lied to when he discovers the school isn’t as perfect as it was described. Talk about the school, its routine, ethos, history, activities and events before your child starts there. If your child is old enough, allow him to visit the school’s website to get a “feel” for the school. If it is possible, take her to see the school and meet the principal in advance. Some schools hold an orientation day for this purpose before all the learners return on the first day. If it is possible, allow your child to participate in school activities such as sports and cultural events. This may help her make friends, gain confidence and learn the culture of the school in a more relaxed environment than in the classroom. Certain pre-schools will allow you to bring your child for a few hours at a time per day for a week at the start of the year. In this manner, she may

become more familiar with the school before she actually starts. Some schools allow a child to spend a day with the prospective class and other learners before starting officially.

Let your child know he can talk to you about the change and how he is coping. As a caregiver, keep in contact with your child’s teacher to see how well he is adjusting. Ask your child if she is making friends and be mindful of changes in her attitude and behaviour. And finally, the most important thing you can do is to be understanding and available for your child to talk to. Show your child that you are confident in his ability to adjust to the new environment by being calm and encouraging. However, if he is not adjusting after about 3 months, make an appointment to speak to his teacher at school about this. Play therapy or counselling may also be beneficial, especially if other changes have occurred in the child’s life recently.

summertime and of course, it also rains quite a bit in our country. Well, that is what my story is all about this time. Ollie and Annie Owl had produced three baby owlets, gorgeous little birds with a bit of fluff here and there, and oh, they were such caring and proud parents. They lived high up in an old eucalyptus tree and they had made the nest very comfortable and safe for the little ones. However, one Sunday afternoon, at around 5 o’clock, very dark and ominous clouds started building up on the horizon. A cheeky wind whipped the leaves of the trees and the sun disappeared behind the clouds, without any warning. It quickly became dark. Hello Children Another month has flown past like the wind and yes, it is SUMMER. I waited so long, well it certainly felt so long, until the winter would pass and the new beautiful green season would visit us again. Now summer is a lovely time, as one can spend time outside without being dressed so that you can hardly bend your elbows and knees. Lots of people like to swim and go on holiday to the beach and of course, the other important things, like the trees become full of fresh green leaves, flowers bloom everywhere and gardens are lush.

What also happens is that most animals and birds have babies in the

Annie Owl wasn’t too concerned at that point as she had fed her babies and she really believed that the nest was strong enough and very sheltered against the rains which might come. The little ones were becoming a bit cold and she softly and gently hooted a little lullaby to them to calm them as she moved closer to keep them warm.

A sudden very bright flash of lightning brightened everything for a second or two, which, almost immediately, was followed by deafening thunder. This meant that he storm was right there, not miles away. A minute later, another flash of lightning and the thunder was so loud, it almost felt as if one’s eardrums would burst.

January 2015

Aneis de Vida 47

The Owl family realized this was no ordinary shower, but a dreadful storm and that they, as well as the lives of their young ones, could be in grave danger. Panicking, they tried to think of a plan. They could not rescue all three their babies. Oh dear, this was a terrible situation. Now, my friend Sally Stork, had decided to make an urgent delivery to a family not far from where the owls lived, and because she had quite a list of deliveries for Monday, decided she would do this one on Sunday evening, to save a bit of time. She was flying along, holding in her beak a pretty baby blanket, embroidered with the words “Baby on Board”, when ahead she suddenly realized there was trouble. A tree was on fire – could that possibly be one that had been struck by the lightning? With an awful shock, she recognized the tree as the one where her friends, Ollie and Annie Owl lived.

48 Aneis de Vida 

January 2015

She increased her flying speed a bit and was saying a silent prayer that the Owls would be safe. She looked for a place to land safely as the tree was already burning on the tips. She managed to land on the same branch where the nest was and by now Annie was beside herself, pleading for help, hooting at the top of her voice, her eyes wide with fear. Ollie had flown to try and find help somewhere. Sally Stork quickly helped arrange the little owlets in her special blanket, picked them up in her beak, and ready for take-off, with Annie right behind her, when Ollie also appeared with Peter Plover. Such joy filled their hearts to take their babies to safety. Always remember the saying “One good deed deserves another” – if you can, always help another who might be in need, especially an animal or bird.Bless you all and enjoy the lovely summer.

I have been practicing trying to read my cat the way you have suggested. It is not working – what am I doing wrong?

Lee Ann—South Africa

Teresa—Brazil

Dear Lee Ann,

Dear Teresa,

Thank you for your question as many people actually think that the two are the same. There is a definite difference. Each human being has an Aura – this is something specific to the individual giving off their unique energy field – perhaps you have come across the following as an example. You are introduced to someone, and suddenly you have the distinct feeling that there is not enough space between you and you feel you need to move away? That is your energy field (your aura) being invaded by this persons energy field which could either be extremely strong and vibrant or does not make you feel easy as if there is something which does not resonate with your own energy field. As for Chakra’s those are distinct energy fields working within definite parts of the body with distinct functions for example the heart chakra or the throat chakra. Of course on a whole they are interlinked and yet have separate roles within our or for our bodies.

There could be a few things. Firstly practice is important because it will help you and your cat connect to one another – through your thought patterns.

.Astrology - Interview with Richard Alwin Fidler – Astrologer working and residing in Cape Town South Africa Website: www.richardfidler.com E-mail: astrofit@yahoo.com

The first question I asked Richard was how he came onto the path of astrology purely because we tend to think that people are spiritual from birth – which yes we are but due to circumstances we ‘’forget our spiritual side’’. Richard was presented with many books to read, resulting in him delving deeper and deeper into the science of astrology. And catapulting him onto a life journey – as the journey of life never ends, it is a continuous fluid evolving motion. He has found astrology to give reliable insight into a person’s character, and charts out what the years ahead can bring forth. Astrology is useful in many ways, based on the relationship between the planets and human behaviour within the greater scheme of things in the world. Many cultures and religions have placed great importance to events that have taken place on our planet and are yet to take place in the future. Astrology is used to define a person’s characteristics, and predict future events in their life based on the positions of the sun, moon and stars at the time of their birth. Knowing these

factors, can influence the path taken in future, give more of an insight why certain events have taken place, or to assist in the future with certain insight and knowledge as to what may or may not be in store for a year or life ahead. It also assist people in understanding certain characteristics that can be burdensome to an individual, through working out sun, moon and planets at birth, it can bring about further understanding leading to a freedom of expression for those individuals. Richard explains that it can be used to fill in the gaps that were ever widening for some, bring more of a closure to certain events that have happened prior to an astrological reading or mapping.

Capricorn 22 Dec - 20 Jan

There could well be someone who is not acting in your best interest this month Capricorns. Your spirit is longing to serve and you are not heeding the call. Some of you are fearful regarding new adventures, don’t be, be willing to learn new things this month. 2015: People around you will definitely be enjoying your generous and kind nature. Just make sure to keep all things in balance in 2015. Don’t allow your moods to spoil the good things coming to you this year. Not a year to commit in relationships or love, they will be short and sweet.

Aquarius 21 Jan - 19 Feb Be careful not to miss new possibilities due to being stubborn. Shake up those old out dated thought patterns and beliefs. This month it is time to decide if you are going to let worry and fear hold you back. And no matter how stuck you are feeling, there are always options available to you. 2015: A year of working hard and finding inner balance. Some may find their jobs tedious and it is not a bad year to start your own business if you have been contemplating just this. Your patience is definitely going to be tested a few times during this year. The love of adventure is perhaps not the best of ideas in 2015.

Pisces 20 Feb - 20 Mar New beginnings – and a new year – how exciting for you. Whether you are single and looking for romance or just wanting to infuse some extra love in your given relationship, this is the month for you, just make sure you are projecting the love that you are wanting in return. 2015: Seems it will be an enthusiastic year for you, just keep your head on your shoulders and not up in the clouds. Now I am once again in that mind space to take a few steps to moving towards a happier and more contented me. I have decided that I do not want to make a “to do” list, but rather a “to be” list this year. Who was it that said we are all human beings, not human doings? Just being truly ourselves is enough to be a good cog in this universal machine. We all have our roles to play, and we were born knowing the part to perfection. The world we live in and our life’s conditioning are just very good at making us numb to our true path; we forget what it is that really brings us joy. I am enjoying making time to just “BE”. I have realised for myself resting is important. I enjoy taking naps. I have found that it is in the periods of quiet

The festive season is known for encouraging less than healthy eating practices. We begin another year with promises of changing our ways. Instead, why not begin by losing the old programing of making promises that you know you will not be able to sustain. Rather begin by reminding yourself of simple practices that you know but tend to forget. This year you are going to go about it differently because you want long term ben72 Aneis de Vida ď Ź January 2015

efits. This is the year when you are going to look inwards to your health solutions based on what is good for your body and not rely solely on other peoples interpretation. This is the year that you are going to get to know your body and what sustains it, nurtures and nourishes it . By following a few simple guide lines, you will enjoy what you eat:

Don’t eat on the run. It impairs the digestion process SOLUTION: Sit down at a table, in a harmonious setting and enjoy the food that has been prepared. There is a frenetic pace that occurs at this time of the year. Don’t let that affect the way you eat. SOLUTION: Eat slowly, mindfully and with appreciation. Savor each mouthful. Breathe. This is something we tend to forget when we are rushing around. SOLUTION: take time for quiet reflection. Five minutes in a quiet space to regroup is better than no minutes. Eating too many food groups at one sitting places enormous strain on the digestive process. SOLUTION: Eat simple meals. Example, a large leafy green salad filled with herbs, sprouts and inseason veggies plus one protein. Lightly steamed veg on a bed of brown basmati rice that has gourmet sprouts (broccoli, onion, purple kohlrabi), finely chopped onion and herbs served with delicious Sesame and Cucumber dressing.

Drinking liquids with a meal dilutes the powerful stomach chemicals and makes the stomach less able to digest your food. SOLUTION: Drink liquids no less than 30 minutes before a meal and 30 minutes after. The imbalance of intestinal flora and not enough pancreatic and liver enzymes creates unpleasant symptoms of gas, bloating, stomach and intestinal cramps, smelly bowel movements, constipation and/ or diarrhea. SOLUTION: Top up on your Living Probiotics as in Kombucha Tea, Kefir yogurt, Kefir Water, Kefir cottage cheese, fermented foods as in fermented sauerkraut- not the vinegar type, miso, kimchi. Eat raw veggies preferably home grown or from a natural source. Make veggie juices and veggie super smoothies. All those living enzymes will support your digestive process, cell rejuvenation which in turn give you glowing skin, shining eyes, energy, loss of excess weight, a restful sleep and a happy body and mind.

The heading alone has had many of you sitting up! Good as it is a topic which too often is brushed under the carpet, and made fun of in a degrading fashion. Frowned upon for religious reasons or belief systems. All these reactions are by products of a world that has not allowed for individuality. Such a broad topic and so many topics within the topic it could take months to write, and have a book in the making. Let us take this a step at a time shall we. Sex is natural, it is part of life, something

74 Aneis de Vida ď Ź

which should be seen as beautiful, and should therefore be enjoyed not frowned upon or made to seem dirty. And let us face facts here, without sex we would not be here now, now would we? I am by no means advocating that everyone go on a sex rampage – that would be rather immature and inconsiderate. I would like to think that as a whole we have evolved into being able to think rationally about this topic, it is not a taboo subject like it used to be, however, it is also not a topic to be taken lightly. Speaking from my very own experience in life, I grew up with parents who were in so many aspects like chalk and cheese and yet very similar. My mom would go scarlet faced if she had to speak to me about sex, in this I remember her trying to explain the birds and the bees to me, my being the tender age of 11, it took her a whole of 5 minutes with a lot of stumbling and fumbling for words, which in itself was nerve wrecking for me. Mom was always extremely good at putting words together, and with her stumbling over her words, all I wanted to do was run outside and play again – never mind the fact that I had absolutely no clue what she was on about. Thank goodness in those days schools still provided sex education, so some relevant information was passed on. The downside of course was listening to friends, and in some ways getting a rather warped amount of information. This article does not purely revolve around sex, but sex defines who we are

– in the sense of male and female, how we perceive our roles to be in life – men in general terms, being those who are the bread winners, the hunters in eons gone by. The strong one, the ones who do not show their true emotions. Women, the nurturers, the home keepers and the individuals who give on an emotional level. Here is where it once again goes a bit whacky – if we take these two species into account and the way in which we have ‘’evolved’’ into our roles, we notice that the way in which we regard sex is also extremely different. Veering away from the human aspect, and we look at nature – male and female roles are not so well defined, male animals show their emotions, as do female animals, and the difference only coming into play with regards to rearing and having young. Taking all the above into account, I have to ask the questions, who decided a) who could or could not show emotions? b) who was to be the home maker c) why we have such low self-esteem (men suffer as much from lack of worth as do women).

If we go according to so called scientific research, we will notice that it stipulates that men and women are wired differently. How on earth can anyone even contemplate such? It is my humble belief that yes we are different but not in such a very large degree that we are wired differently. That in itself suggests we are two totally different species does it not? In all reality would it not be just as easy to then say, like I am going to do – January 2015

Aneis de Vida 75

we have been taught to think and act differently. Not wired differently but taught differently. Men are not allowed to cry – why are men not allowed to cry? What is so very wrong with a man showing that he is strong enough to show his emotions? Women for decades were not allowed into certain areas of the work place, and in many cultures still today are not afforded equal opportunities. Again the question why – this can be interpreted as men being afraid of what women are capable of, but no in all reality it was a taught difference and in some instances still is, ruling people by their perceived differences.

dispel the scientific version to our difference, but that in itself would not be such a bad thing if we could come back to basics and realise we are only different in appearance and that we need to celebrate our differences but also know we are strong in our sameness. Celebrate the fact that we are unique in how we react but carry the same fears of being laughed at or ridiculed. As a man you are strong even if you show weakness, as a women, even if you are ruled by your emotions, this is not something to be ashamed of, but rather enjoyed, as you bring a different perspective to any given situation.

I am not trying to prove or disprove science, but I am wanting you to think about these aspects and wonder, start enquiring within yourself whether that which I have made mention of is not perhaps true. Of course it would then

In the months to come we will look at the topic of sex, perceptions, ideas, and what makes this subject such a contentious one.

We as human-beings share an inseparable and reciprocal bond with the natural world. We have an enduring effect on EARTH and are dependent on EARTH’s survival. Our natural environment in turn has an enduring effect on us and requires us to treat it with respect to share in its natural treasures for our own survival and growth. “The biosphere of this planet is threatened by just one of its inhabitant species as never before. Our impact on local and global ecosystems has reached potentially catastrophic scope and intensity as the industrial revolution spreads through our rising population. Industrialisation has increased per capita impacts by many orders of magnitude, severed our sense of reciprocity with the very world in which we are embedded, alienated us from one another, and profoundly affected our psychic and somatic well-being. We may choose to use science and technology to monitor, model and ameliorate our harmful ecological impacts, but they also fuel our addiction to a way of life that exacerbates these impacts. As a psychotherapist, I believe that humans are far too complex to be compartmentalized or labeled and that without addressing the core wounds and origins of one’s distress in an integrative and experiential process which incorporates the WHOLE PERSON (spirit, soul, body, mind and Earth), sustainable growth will not be achieved and is merely symptom relief. It requires commitment, responsibility and patience as the process can be uncomfortable and challenging. Psychotherapy is not a quick fix, but a unique process which is different for every person. My preferred therapeutic modality is SHIP®: www.ship.org.za “Human skin is porous; the world flows through you. Your senses are large pores that let the world in. By being attuned to the wisdom of your senses, you will never become an exile in your own life, an outsider lost in an external spiritual place that your will and intellect, have constructed.” ― John O’Donohue, Anam Cara: A Book of Celtic Wisdom There are many, many pathways to healing. There is no right, no wrong, as each person’s journey is their own. I believe there is no prescription as to which path should be followed as long as it: a) is not a quick-fix. Psychotherapy originally means the restoration of Soul. It is a sacred process of returning to Home. Not a quick-fix, but a journey to Soul.

f) remains dynamic and open to change. Establishes trust in one’s internal capacity to heal. Provides a space for one’s soul’s voice to guide the process. Discomfort is a necessary portal in the process and the body is the conduit. g) deepens a person’s relationship to self and the greater context. h) is integrative: Ecology-PsychologyBody- Soul is interconnected. The body will speak on behalf of the soul. Healing is an ancient artform. The blueprint is b) it resonates with a person. It speaks to already pre-existing in the bodily form. what they need. c) one owns the process and does not relinquish autonomy. Patriarchal structures have created a system where people surrender their autonomy in health to ‘experts’. The body and soul knows what it needs to heal. Therapists aren’t healers, super- beings, they are very real people travelling the journey too. They act as facilitators, empathetic containers. d) the process uncovers and activates internal resources and energy. Humans have become paralyzed, immobilized, disempowered, disconnected by and over-emphasis on external source of information. Intuition remains the powerful source. e) empowers and creates no dependency on an external person/ methodology/ ideology/ construct. Psychotherapy is essentially about holding a compassionate, non-judgmental space for a soul to journey inwards. Providing a witness to suffering and pain.

I have explored many pathways over the years and I can conclude that we can incorporate/integrate many techniques, methodologies, mediums from different sources on the journey. Many choose psychotherapy as their facilitated medium. This is by no means the only way and I do believe that my own profession needs to seriously consider reframing the work to include the Earth and ecology and the body in their methodologies as I consider any compartmentalizing as not helpful. Let’s look at psychotherapy. Consider this: Should a person attend 1 (hour/ session per week) x 12 (months) = 48 hours/sessions over a year. That means they would spend roughly in effect 0.0156% of life-energy on such a process. Follow the formula: A 35 year old is in effect 306 600 hours old (24 x 365 x 35). So 48 hours over a 12 month period is equivalent to 0.0156% of a 35-year old person’s life. One hour per day over a 12

The operator, who we will call Anton, suggested we find our way to town and grab something to eat there. We asked before we lead our intrepid little group off (consisting of one east German - non English speaking, one semi English speaking west German and a full English speaking Norwegian) what the plan was for the next few days so we could further prepare ourselves. Here began the 1st lesson of guest liaison and management of how to treat your clients or rather not. As it turned out we had a wonderful time in St Lucia, Anton relaxed with the group and we went sightseeing on the estuary by boat, enjoyed a post turtle walk evening braai (barbeque) on the beach. Logger head and leather back turtles start nesting along this part of Southern Africa’s eastern coastline from November until the last babies hatch at the end of February. We then drove along the coast on the beach to Sodwana Bay, picnicked lunched there on the beach and it was here the defining change of my career happened. I was sitting in the waves back to back with Anton enjoying a bitterly cold beer when he said “so how do you like my office?” Now this was a mind breaking realisation to me, I had designed hundreds 88 Aneis de Vida 

of ads and campaigns for travel agents and airlines in my ad career but I certainly had never left the confines of my drawing board let alone been to any of the destinations The guests enjoyed their trip to KwaZulu Natal, we had great footage in the can and I more than grasped the idea of becoming a tour operator myself. Camera Africa was born in July of 1995, ostensibly as a fly fishing ground operator taking groups to Kosi Bay 2hours north of Sodwana Bay, on the border of South Africa and Mozambique. We had by now befriended Anton, and he was building a lodge in this magnificent wilderness area of Maputaland called Kosi Bay. We bought the people carrying vehicle and designed a couple of fishing packages, however, its not a business where clients will suddenly just arrive , so in the launching of my business and getting to know the Kosi Bay area Anton very cleverly suggested that I become his marketing arm and assist with reservations, well, Camera Africa didn’t sell one fishing trip, but did manage the marketing and reservations , became a long distance lodge management team for Kosi Bay Lodge for a period of 7 years! We also ran educationals for press and overseas operators and became very involved in marketing the entire region as a whole to the extent of serving for 2 years on the tourism association committee as proxy chair for the region. From attending all the tourism shows as an exhibitor Camera Africa became known for

her stable of self-catering destinations until one day a prospective Client asked for an itinerary of the Maputaland region, we have never looked back since. One localised itinerary grew to planning itineraries for the whole country and then into Botswana and other neighbouring countries. However our burgeoning American middle-market came to an abrupt end when the markets crashed in the early part of the new millennium and we were now left with selling to the South African domestic market. However that became an entirely different challenge, the name Camera Africa did not gel locally, we received calls from people asking for their speeding fine photos, if we hired out lights for photographic shoots and many more inane queries, after much deliberation we selected a new name for the business, something that would leave no question as to what we are all about and the type of business we wanted to conduct, hence Exceptional African Safaris (EAS) was born. We have designed and executed itineraries for the owner of Coroner beer in Mexico, one of the Coke Cola heirs, international mid-market travellers from the United States and Britain and providing a booking service for our home grown domestic holiday makers. However, there are some challenges as there are some that relate the word safaris to the hunting industry, make no error, EAS is not in favour of trophy hunting at all; nor do we condone elephant back riding and walking with lions. We provide an exceptional tailor made safari service to high and middle market

guests. We ask many questions with reference to the client’s wish list and available budget to achieve his aims. EAS will travel with the guests if required. Being an entity who is passionately orientated to conservation and wildlife activism in trying to find a way to stop the scourge of poaching of our iconic African species, products that follow a sustainable tourism ethic are chosen for the guests. Recently EAS has assisted in: the conception and business planning of a proposed (w)holistic retreat in Zimbabwe; designing an eco-educational family safari incorporating children from 12years of age for the international schools of the Far East. The latter is to educate our future generations about Africa, its animals and its people and to instil in these young minds the reason to conserve Africa’s animals for future generations in the very environment we are trying to protect so as to gain an insight of why these animals need to be saved from extinction. EAS identified the need to bring the younger children into this arena for up until now there were only courses for the school leaver providing a gap year experience. Our children are the key and education of these minds will unlock the path to success in making a stand for our wildlife. A child’s voice can be extremely persuasive to a parent. As I go now into a new year full of hope, perhaps the vet /ranger or the Chipingali will be attainable, who knows what the future holds, as long as I’m in the African bush I will be most content! managed to get an interview done. First impression was that of a person who is genuinely interested in people, and life – and most importantly who has experienced life on many levels. Jovial and interesting are two words that come to mind and yet a deep thinker. And the deep thinking part came to the fore as we discussed his ‘’colourful’’ background. Born and raised in a Catholic home, which of course sent me into hysterics, and why you may very well ask. The answer is quite simple really, free thinking does not allow for people to be put into a box, one takes that which resonates from each part of life to make you the unique entity that you are. And this is very much how Stephan has grown to become the person he is today. To understand what he believes, read his book “So You Are Alive”, he has managed to help many through his very own life’s experience and has written a few books (links below). Apart from the fact of how he was raised in a faith filled home, he has Do you ever look at a person’s face – you also spent time in Japan practising Karate. don’t know them but you have this thought His work background was sales and marat the back of your mind ‘’what makes this keting which comes through in the fact that person tick?’’ – that is what went through he is not afraid to talk about himself – or is my mind with regards to Stephan van it a bit of a mix? An extract of one of his books ‘’So you are Alive’’, (what he terms his passion book), he writes the following: Someone once said, “Ask and you shall receive.” I have consistently asked questions and I have consistently received answers. Some of the answers have been surprising indeed! What I share here is the culmination of a lifetime of searching, and yet it will not even scrape the brim of truth. As we all know, truth is elusive, perceived differently by everyone, ever changing and yet always the same. And to be honest, it is really only MY truth. Like the Buddha, I have seen poverty, disease, old age, suffering and death. And like the Buddha, I wish to make some sense of it all. And like most of you, I wish to find a way to make it all more fulfilling; for myself, for my family, for my friends, for my fellow human beings. www.stephenvanbasten.co.za/author.html
