THE MATERNITY NETWORK Advertorial
Welcome to our second edition of The Maternity Network Directory. The Maternity Network is a new venture that addresses the need for a directory of professionals who are qualified and experienced working with fertility and maternity. The information and directory offers non-biased, nonmedical, holistic support for women. The website www.thematernitynetwork.co.uk includes listings of all our members, information about the services our members offer such as “what is a Doula, what can chiropractors do for you in pregnancy? How does Reflexology work? What benefits are there from having a massage?” and many more. Our members have written articles to explain what you might use their service for and how they can help, many services you may not realise exist – invaluable help like Night Nannies, Birth Doulas, Jewellery experts, Breastfeeding consultants and more. These change regularly on the website so check back often. Each Directory is given a focus beginning on Fertility, then Pregnancy, Birth, Postnatal and Babies and Beyond, then it circles back round to Fertility. This Spring Directory is focused on Pregnancy so we’ve gathered our members to write articles about their skills and how best they can support you throughout your pregnancy. Our next directory is due out in June, and our focus is Birth. You can order a copy to come to your home – just complete the form at the back of the magazine. Louise Prince Founder, The Maternity Network
The Maternity Network tries to ensure the members advertising in the Directory are confident and qualified working their fertility or maternity field. We do this by collating copies of our member’s qualifications and insurance. We cannot guarantee these copies and they are not checked. The Maternity Network does not accept any liability or responsibility for any services or information provided by the members listed or advertising. The Maternity Network does not endorse any material or advice given in the directory or by members.
You can find all our members* listed in the Directory. These members have been accepted into our membership. This means that they have appropriate qualifications specific to fertility, maternity or babies, they are mostly self employed with insurance, they are members of professional bodied associations and those who work with under 18’s have sent copies of their CRB Police checks. *Please note: not all our advertisers are members

Pregnancy
Congratulations! You are about to embark on a beautiful if daunting journey to motherhood! There might be some bumps on the journey or some larger humps that need medical attention, either way we’re here to try and smooth this journey and leave you glowing with a healthy pregnancy, not glowing with sweat! We’ve looked at the common symptoms you might experience and included information, advice and support from our Maternity Network members. Here is just an example of what to find support for. We’ve also got this information and more on our website www.thematernitynetwork.co.uk 1st Trimester Nausea and Sickness People call this morning sickness, although this is rather like receiving your mail: it happens at all hours! Some women will feel a bit nauseous and others will adopt the head-over-the-toilet-bowl position every couple of hours (from the sickness, not the post, that is). Not ideal of course if you’re trying to conceal any early pregnancy signs from the office, who may be wondering why you either a) have such a weak bladder; b) keep insisting on eating fish vindaloo or c) prefer working at your desk outside the ladies loos! The main culprit for morning sickness is HCG, a pregnancy hormone that is present during the first trimester. Add that to a growing uterus, sluggish digestion and increased levels of stomach acid and there’s little wonder you’re looking greener than Shrek at a recycling tip! Many pregnant women also find they have a heightened sense of smell which can make them feel nauseous or sick in certain situations, i.e. when your husband decides to paint the lounge or permeate the kitchen air with a generous helping of fish & chips. If you are vomiting a lot though, it’s perhaps best to go and see your GP. Here are some things that might help from The Maternity Network: • Ginger tea or aromatherapy oil •T ry wearing an acupressure wrist band – the type worn by boaters to avoid seasickness •S mall but frequent meals. Eat little and often to keep blood sugar levels steady and to avoid them dipping •D rink lots of fluids and if you’re struggling to keep food down, consider an antenatal supplement •T iredness can contribute to nausea so get as much rest as possible. Leave that pile of ironing alone! • Peppermint tea or sucking on mints • Avoid being close to foods that make you feel sick • Avoid citrus and strong flavours such as garlic and onions Diet Reflexology Aromatherapy

2nd Trimester – possible niggles Back, Neck or Shoulder ache Normally you’d expect to get a bit of back ache in your third trimester because the weight of the baby is changing your posture and your ligaments are softening. You may get backache at other times too, but your private life’s your own! Suggestions from The Maternity Network • Stand up straight, as your mother used to say. • Avoid high heels like the plague. Quit those Manolos! • Try to encourage any toddlers to walk as opposed to you carrying them. • Bribing them with sweets or money is always effective!! • A cushion behind your back when sitting can provide effective relief. • A hot water bottle or wheat bag •S wimming – but don’t do breaststroke legs. You may also want to avoid the 30 foot high diving board! •K neeling down on all fours (especially useful in the last week& if your baby has shifted into an uncomfortable position) Reflexology Acupuncture Homeopathy Pilates Osteopathy Massage Yoga 3rd Trimester – possible niggles Swelling – ankles, hands, legs etc! This can be the accumulation of excess fluid around the hands and ankles which can (but may not always) be so bad you feel like your legs and feet are going to burst like an over inflated balloon. Your skin can feel tight and sometimes painful too. Suggestions from the Maternity Network: •D rink more water – yes more! Your body may be storing it like a camel’s hump because it doesn’t know when it’ll get more water. • Wear flip-flops or comfy shoes (if you really have to wear those lime green Crocs then now’s the only time you’d be forgiven). • Put your feet up so that they’re level with your hips. Try not to elevate them higher than your hips because although the fluid may disappear quickly, it’ll come back just as quick. Although it may take time to drain this way, it won’t come back. •S it on your birth ball at the computer or at work so you don’t put pressure on the backs of your legs whilst sitting. •G et some fennel down your neck as it’s a diuretic. You can even buy it in tea form. Slurp! •M assage your ankles and feet towards the knee – use light, stroking and slow techniques. If David Beckham’s not available, you’ll just have to do it yourself. Massage Lymph drainage Reflexology Aromatherapy Find more information on our website

Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction (SPD)
Symptoms can be debilitating and painful but McTimoney Chiropractic may help Written by Rachael Wall SPD is a very painful condition that affects the pubic bone where the two parts of the bone meet. Symptoms can start suddenly e.g. after a fall and can occur due to the release of a hormone called relaxin, which causes the ligaments to relax and reaches its peak around the twelfth week of pregnancy - so it is not uncommon to start experiencing pelvic pain at this time. This in addition to the extra weight of an unborn baby can cause the pubic bone to separate, so it is important to seek help as soon as possible otherwise symptoms can increase as pregnancy progresses. Symptoms include: bruising, burning or stabbing pain directly over the pubic bone, hips, lower back, groin, inner thigh or lower abdomen and an audible clicking or grinding can be heard or felt from the pelvis. Temporary incontinence experienced when changing position. Difficulty with many day-to-day activities including walking, lifting and parting the legs e.g. getting in/out of the bath and car, lifting, standing for long periods or after from sitting to standing. The pelvis serves as an anchoring point for many muscles and its joints play an important role in weight bearing activities. McTimoney Chiropractic seeks to check and assess this area in addition to the whole body in order to treat any misalignments with the aim to improve symptoms, even into the thirdtrimester. Self help: *Always plan ahead and consider whether you really need to carry out an activity and determine whether things can be done in an easier way, and ask for help where you can. * Always listen to your body, don’t try and over do things and if it hurts it is a signal from your body. * Take smaller steps when walking, when walking up stairs take it one step at a time * Use a pillow between your legs when sleeping, * Avoid leg crossing and prolonged standing, and strenuous activities, avoid straddling objects and squatting * Sit and rest regularly * If swimming avoid breaststroke * A support belt can also help to ease symptoms. For advice tailored to your needs always consult a specialist who will be able to give the most appropriate treatment and advice. Rachael Wall is a McTimoney Chiropractor based in Maidenhead. LOOK GOOD FEEL GOOD IN PREGNANCY A Patient perspective
Sailing through your pregnancy with an extreme sense of well-being is a wish for all expectant parents to be. Minor ailments of pregnancy can be emotionally and physically debilitating says Toni tucker an experienced midwife/ consultant acupuncturist specialising in Fertility, pregnancy, childbirth and post partum. My story by: Lilly Haig I was seven weeks pregnant suffering from sever morning sickness and vomiting I had an added problem, my migraine attacks, some days I was so ill I just couldn’t even get out of bed I was weak and an emotional wreck, Joy full pregnancy I thought!” A BIG JOKE!” I was recommended to see Toni, I was at my wits end my husband and my family were also worried and suffering. I went to see Toni, within few minutes in the clinic I felt relieved and in safe, hands. A medical history and my blood pressure was recorded and fine needles were placed mainly in my wrist and feet, fifteen minutes into my treatment I went into relaxation and then my stomach felt calm and the pressure in my head was being relieved I felt much better but still weak. I had six sessions in total but I was visibly different after two sessions I was also given nutritional advice and recommended vitamin supplements. At around 32 weeks gestation I developed Sciatica, which effectively and safely was treated using acupuncture by Toni. Yes, thanks to this system of medicine, I did sail through, I had a normal birth and our beautiful and healthy baby girl Bluebell was born. I am now an advocate of acupuncture in pregnancy and after delivery I had acupuncture for mastitis and it worked wonders!! Hypnotherapy
Let the fear go – the key is your mind! Written by Vanessa Turner Are you thinking of becoming pregnant or are pregnant again? Have you experienced a difficult or traumatic birth? Worried about what will happen? Hypnosis could be the key… The term Hypnosis for many, conjures up images of people out of control, munching onions or prancing around on stage someplace ‘under the influence’ of the hypnotist! The media and stage hypnosis combined really has not done many favours for the professional hypnotherapist. The professional hypnotherapist uses hypnosis as an effective tool to help women heal traumatic and negative emotional experiences that could block or influence pregnancy, birth and baby. For many women they bring fear and previous trauma into their next birth which can lead to longer labours, more painful contractions, unnecessary interventions, longer post birth recovery and in some cases post natal depression. There are ways to safely and easily release these fears quickly (in many cases just 1 or 2 sessions is all that is required) so that pregnancy is more enjoyable and calm, and birth is experienced as a natural and normal event. Far from being a form of mind control or ‘spooky’ – it is a process of gentle, deep relaxation enabling you to access the unconscious mind and work with your therapist achieving release of whatever the negative thoughts, feelings and causes may have been held in the unconscious and most importantly – replace them with a positive expectancy and anticipation for your future birth. If you want to enjoy your pregnancy fully and be in control of your birth experience you cannot afford not to release and replace the negative thoughts! Don’t take my word for it, here are some experiences from clients whom I have worked with; “We wanted to maximise my chances of birthing naturally. We learned how to think positively and relax whilst pregnant with my partners help. We got to the hospital just in time to start birthing our baby. We were relaxed and felt confident and in control the whole time! “It helped me shift all the negative and very sad memories I carried with me for far too long following the birth of my son six years ago - it can be very difficult to picture a positive experience when all our memories come from a very difficult time. However, Hypnobirthing made absolute sense. With the breathing techniques, I learned to relax and I think I had underestimated how important this is. “ “I truly believe that despite the fact that my birth didn’t go exactly as I would have preferred, the techniques we learned and the daily practice in my HypnoBirthing classes enabled me to cope admirably and remain calm and relaxed” Vanessa Turner specialises in fear and Panic release using gentle HypnoBirthing. PREGNANCY Article
What are the benefits of chiropractic care during pregnancy? Written by Dr. Gail Rees-Jones Many women are, understandably, afraid to do anything strenuous during their pregnancy and the thought of receiving manual therapy such as chiropractic is daunting to say the least. Let me assure you, as long as you have made your chiropractor aware that you are pregnant, chiropractic care is safe and may be very beneficial during this physically stressful period. During pregnancy many physiological and hormonal changes take place in the body. Fluctuations in hormones cause a laxity or loosening of ligaments and joints throughout the body, which increases the risk of sprains and strains, pregnant women may also hear more frequent “pops” and “clicks” at different stages of pregnancy. During pregnancy a woman goes through major postural changes. The breasts and internal structures increase in size and with an ever expanding belly the pelvis starts to gradually tilt causing an increase in the curvature of her back, resulting in pubic and lower back pain. Furthermore, the combined effect shifts the centre of gravity forward and may lead to changes in ones sense of balance increasing the risk of trips and falls. A restriction or subluxation, describes what happens when spinal bones lose their normal motion or position, this may cause nerves to become stretched or twisted (pinched) and interfere with the communication between the brain and the rest of the body. Restrictions may occur in the neck, caused as it compensates for the changes in the lower spine by moving forward, this may result in neck pain, headaches, nausea and/or insomnia to name a few. A chiropractor specialises in detecting and correcting these restrictions and studies have shown that women who received chiropractic adjustments during their pregnancy were able to carry and deliver their babies with more comfort and painkillers during delivery were reduced by half. Family care can start from the very beginning as babies can benefit when their pregnant mothers receive chiropractic care. Before, during and after pregnancy, nutritional advice may also be given to expectant mums to ensure both mum and baby are at their optimal health. For further information or a chiropractic consultation contact Dr. Gail Rees-Jones at Posture Perfect Ltd on 07904331442, located in Windsor and Maidenhead.

Night, Night, Baby Top 10 Tips to encourage your baby to sleep through the night Written By Jo Copes 1. Always try to put your baby down awake so he will recognise where he is if he wakes up in the middle of the night. 2. As your baby gets older (from about six weeks) and is beginning to stretch the time between feeds, ensure that the last feed of the day is a really filling one. Often your baby will be too tired to make the effort to feed properly, but persevere as this will enable you both to sleep for longer. 3. Don’t worry if your baby grizzles when you put him down to sleep. Babies often create their own wall of “white sound” in order to cut out other noises that are preventing them from going to sleep. If your baby’s crying increases or continues for more than 10 minutes you should, of course, go to him and establish what is wrong. 4. Use a dummy to settle your baby at the beginning of his sleep, whether a nap or an overnight sleep; however, do not let him become dummy-dependent by using it throughout the night – once it has fallen out, leave it. This way, he will not become used to having it returned to him and will learn to sleep without it. (If breastfeeding, wait until your baby is one month old to ensure breastfeeding is well-established). 5. Once your baby is weaned (from 6 months), he is able to start sleeping through the night as he will be getting sufficient nutrition during the day. If he is still waking, don’t just leave him to cry. Instead, take a deep breath and a lot of patience, and kneel by his cot stroking his tummy in a clockwise direction with one hand and stroking his feet from toe to heel with the other (hold his feet together as if you were about to change his nappy). This will give him as much reassurance as if you were cuddling him and will eventually allow his desire for sleep to overcome his desire for a feed. It can take up to an hour each time but within five nights your baby should be sleeping through. 6. Maximise the differences between daytime naps and overnight sleep (nursery and kitchen, dimmed light and bright daylight, calm oneon-one time and busy family chatter).

7. Help your baby to develop his internal body clock (or Circadian cycle) by keeping his feed times and nap times consistent during the day – it will help with his overnight sleep. 8. Put in place a regular evening routine so your baby picks up on sleep associations (for example, a bath, a massage, story time with older siblings, feed Babies go and bed). Try to make this a transferable routine, so that it can remain the same when you go on holiday or to granny’s for the night. 9. Ensure your baby’s bedroom is a peaceful place, somewhere he can sleep well. Try to keep toys downstairs, have soft lighting and subtle colours. A blackout blind can be particularly useful to keep out early summer sunlight. 10. Make sure your baby’s room isn’t too hot (or, less likely, too cold). An ideal temperature is around 18°C. Remember: if you are breastfeeding, you will not be able to begin guiding your baby into a good sleep routine until this has been well-established for your baby, i.e.: between 4-6 weeks.

BABIES Advertorial
Babies go MAD about music! Written by Emma Lelliott Babies are very special!! Their needs are unique. Combining music and movement through stimulating activities and moments of pure fun supports a baby’s learning though play. There are numerous articles about the benefits of music to stimulate the brain (the Mozart effect). Our ability to identify a regular beat in music is linked to our intellectual capabilities. But we have to learn how to listen to feel the beat and babies and youngsters alike prefer to move in time to music using their whole bodies. Not only does singing and dancing bring huge joy to children, who are naturally creative and energetic, it also enhances their mental, social and physical development. Nursery rhymes and songs are an ideal way of doing this and you can build them into your activity time at home with your baby. Babies from 3 months old adore burbling along to catchy rhythms and rhymes, practicing and developing their burgeoning verbal skills. At the same time their movements of arms and legs stimulate baby’s physical awareness and develop their muscle control and coordination. This high energy and freedom to express them is precisely why so many babies thrive in classes such as Mad Academy. There’s a different programme every week which includes songs (including signing), instruments, wide musical genres from across the globe, and great props. All these elements can be taken home and enjoyed on a one to one with your baby, which will enhance their physical motor movements, coordination, emotional and intellectual development. There’s nothing quite like getting hands on and continuing everything you learn at a class like Mad Academy and getting involved with your babies at such a little age because you gain back so much for their enjoyment and participation. You are likely to see groups of babies “strutting their stuff” to the strains of the Scissor Sisters, Chinese drummers and, yes Status Quo! And how does this music help youngsters? – a great beat that little people and grown ups can relate to. Your Maternity Network affiliated class instructor is Emma Lelliott, who has been a musician since childhood and studied music at University. “MAD Academy is my passion (apart from my own 2 children!) and I have loved everything about my 3 years of teaching.” Emma on 0118 979 2695 www.madacademy.com
