Chiropractic Care for Mum and Baby By Gail Rees-Jones Posture Perfect Ltd T: 01753 864664 (WINDSOR) T: 07904331442, (MAIDENHEAD) The birth process is said to be the most risky journey you will ever take in your lifetime. Even under natural circumstances, without any form of intervention, the birth process can affect an infant’s spine and is potentially traumatic for both mum and baby. It is highly recommended that both baby and postnatal mum are checked over by a musculoskeletal specialist, such as a chiropractor, for any misalignments in the spine and the rest of the body. During the pushing stage of labour, pressure is exerted on the baby’s spine as he/she is compressed and moves down the birth canal. Pulling, twisting and the use of instruments, such as forceps and suction cups, at the time of delivery may cause further spinal distress. Other factors to consider are the changes in environmental forces that the baby is exposed to as he/she exits a buoyant, closed-packed environment to enter one with weight-bearing and gravitational forces. Spinal distress commonly occurs throughout this process. Preliminary studies suggest that colic, unusual crying; poor appetite, ear infections or erratic sleeping habits can all be signs of spinal distress. Chiropractic care will correct misalignments in the body and reduce spinal distress, helping to provide relief from the signs mentioned above making for a more comfortable, happy baby. Problems with sucking/feeding, misshaped head, restlessness and irritability may also be helped. The female body undergoes major postural and hormonal changes during and after pregnancy, chiropractic care may help to relieve any accompanied aches and pains and make for an easier transition from pregnancy to motherhood.

PREGNANCY Feature: Breech presentations
Breech Babies Have you been told that your baby is Breech presentation? Do you know what that is? How many types there are and what your options are? We’ve got some complementary answers here. Between weeks 29 and 32 of pregnancy, approximately 15% of babies are in the breech position (Kauppila 1975). Only 3% to 4% of these continue in the breech position until labour. However, the longer this position is maintained into the pregnancy, the less chance there is of the baby turning. Nowadays, the usual management of delivery if the baby is still in the breech position at 38 weeks is to do a caesarean section. One in four babies will present by breech at some stage of pregnancy, but by 34 weeks most of these will have changed. In the majority of cases there are no obvious reasons for a breech position but the cause may be: a low-lying placenta, premature birth, multiple pregnancy, poly-hydramnios, hydrocephalus, fibroids, or an unusually shaped uterus….. All these conditions are contraindicated to trying to turn a breech pregnancy. - Toni Tucker, Midwife Your caregiver may offer you an ECV (External Cephalic Version) to turn the baby. You should talk to your caregiver about the pros and cons of this procedure and the pros and cons of breech birth or breech delivery of your baby. Some independent midwives and maternity units will support you to have a breech birth if your baby does not turn before you go into labour. Frank breech: The fetus’ buttocks are aimed toward the birth canal and the legs are straight up in front of the body. The feet are near the head. Footling breech: One or both of the fetus’ feet are down and will be born first. Here are some complementary therapies which may be successful for you; Reflexology is a non-ticklish foot treatment which feels like a relaxing massage. Areas on the feet correspond to the body and can be stimulated to support the baby’s energy, relax your uterus and convey correct position to the baby. This treatment can be done from 37 weeks and should only be done by a Maternity Reflexologist. Hypnotherapy Our thoughts have a profound impact on our baby and our body as well as the mind. Deep, rhythmic breathing combined with visualizations By using very long slow breaths in and out, and the gentle sense of release as you let yourself imagine some positive thoughts:-
www.thematernitynetwork.co.uk
PREGNANCY Feature: Breech presentations
•A ll the muscles of the uterus being soft and relaxed, allowing the perfect rotation of baby into the vertex (head down in the pelvis) position. • There being lots of room around the baby and even that the breath is expanding the room for your baby to make any necessary turn easily. Imagining your tummy with a huge balloon, very spacious inside and your baby freely moving him/herself into the head down position. • Your baby being happy relaxed and really excited to meet you around your due date. Affirmations have the power to create the reprogramming of any negative impressions and replaces them with positive ones, reinforcing stronger, healthier belief patterns that the inner mind acts upon. Some suggestions are:• My baby is strong and healthy and ready to be in the optimum position • My muscles are relaxed and allowing my baby room to turn in this most natural position • My baby is happy and content and knows what to do Fear Release – Worry, anxiety or fear can have a direct affect on the muscles surrounding your baby. - Vanessa Turner Hypnobirthing Practitioner, Earley, nr Reading. Do speak to your midwife/GP/Obstetrician if your baby is breech about your options.

PREGNANCY Advertorial Breech and Acupuncture
Breech presentation and use of Traditional Acupuncture and Moxibustion By Toni Tucker, Midwife and Acupuncturist T: 07958 730157 The use of acupuncture and Moxibustion for attempting to turn breech babies is a well – documented treatment and its simplicity and non invasive nature have made it a popular choice for pregnant woman to explore before conventional medical procedures. Chinese viewpoint The Bao Mai channel links the centre, the strength of essence of fertility with the uterus. To the Chinese, if there is a constitutional deficiency of the essence the fetus cannot maintain its position. Treatment with acupuncture Considering all the potential outcomes and dangers of having a breech baby, it is not surprising that women will turn to acupuncture for help rather than have a caesarean section. However, a strict code should always be followed to ascertain the safety of the process, and a number of points to watch are listed below. My experience as a midwife over three decades together with, sound knowledge and experience as a consultant acupuncturist I have turned many breeches, and have had greatest success between 32 and 35 weeks. Having said this, some patients have managed to turn as late as 38 weeks. It is certainly worth making the attempt in order to avoid caesarean section, and I have come across no side- effects as a result of this treatment. The significant complication comes when a practitioner of acupuncture has limited experience in this field and she or he is not aware of number of contra indications I therefore recommend that each case is assessed and the acupuncturist works alongside the Midwifery team to ensure safety and effectiveness of the treatment Moxibustion for turning breech babies Alongside acupuncture much attention has been given to the turning of breech babies using moxibustion. Moxibustion is a way of stimulating acupuncture points with heat, which can encourage the fetus to turn. The technique employs a lighted moxa stick held near the point BL-67 on the little toe. It appears that by stimulating production of maternal hormones (placental oestrogen and prostaglandin) (Budd 1992), it encourages some gentle movements in the uterus, which in turn stimulates fetal movement and with the gravity and some mild activity the baby turns into a correct position .

PREGNANCY Article by member: Postnatal Depression
Working Mums: Can We Have it All? By Debbie Kelly Independent counsellor, Bracknell, Berkshire www.debbiekelly.co.uk I recently took part in a radio discussion about the pressures on working Mums, titled „can we have it all?’ By ‘all’ society means working and being a ‘perfect’ Mum. The discussion was fuelled by reports of Anna Friel’s struggle with work and motherhood. Unfortunately, the accompanying glamorous pictures showed Anna more as a product of the problem, rather than a victim. In my experience media portrayals of ‘perfection’ can influence our hopes and dreams of post baby life. We strive to achieve what we see in the media, actresses losing their baby weight phenomenally fast, not to mention digital enhancement of photos! Sadly, this can affect our enjoyment of this important phase. If we then envisage returning from work to spend time with our smiling baby/ toddler, the reality of an irritable pre bed child (and Mum!) could fall short of expectations. So what is to be done? The first step is to address the need to be a perfect ‘Mum’ and accept that actually „good enough’ is ok. We may need to compromise; work part time and set out clear needs from our employer. Also, it is beneficial to explore and accept financial or supportive help available, including offers from friends and family. An honest assessment of the need to work be it financial or personal, can help us to accept circumstances that cannot be changed thus alleviating the guilt we may feel in returning to work. Alternatively,if going back to work is a personal choice, embracing this can also diminish the guilt and pressure that wider society exerts on us. Returning to work or not, we sometimes need external help to deal with the strong emotions associated with adjusting to life with a new baby. Counselling offers a safe and confidential environment where you can explore these issues. Being heard by the counsellor frees us up to listen to ourselves more effectively enabling us to make informed decisions. Occasionally this will involve letting go of what is causing us ‘dis-ease’, such as the guilt associated with returning to work. Other times we may decide to meet the challenge head on and incorporate the learning we have achieved into our every day lives. This forms an important part of our personal growth, allowing us more control over our lives. It is my role as a counsellor to provide support during this sometimes difficult period of change and adjustment.

PREGNANCY Article by member: Postnatal Exercise
Regian your Body Faster By Sarah El-Hawary Maidenhead. T:07938-588-029 www.gofigure-personaltraining.com During pregnancy, labour and delivery the body goes through dramatic changes. These changes are most apparent once we have delivered the baby. We have suddenly lost abdominal support; pelvic floor muscles have been stretched, and in most cases torn or cut. Assisted deliveries could cause pelvic joint pain, and C-section your abdominal muscles have been torn. There is a great need to address these weaknesses, as soon after birth as possible, to avoid further complications. The following 3 steps will enable you to gently ease your body back into shape during the immediate post partum recovery period. Step 1 Breathing While pregnant we automatically make changes to our breathing patterns. The first step is to reset our natural breathing pattern. You begin by lying on your back, knees up, feet flat on floor, arms resting gently beside your body. Close your eyes and take in a few normal breaths. Gradually change this breathing to widen and lift your chest as you breathe in, sending air in via the nose deep into the lungs and out through the mouth. Repeat this for 3-4 breaths. Allow your breathing to return to normal, repeat exercise for about 3-5 minutes. Step 2 Pelvic Floor Lying in the same position, place your index and middle finger either side of your hip bone – facing toward your pubic bone. Begin breathing pattern above. When you have relaxed into your breathing pattern, gently contract your pelvic floor. You should feel a slight pressure under your finger tips as you contract your pelvic floor, this pressure will be your Transverse Abdominis (TVA) firing up. Relax and repeat exercise for 3-5 minutes. Step 3 TVA Your TVA is the deepest abdominal muscle and is responsible for providing support to the trunk of the body. It also plays an important role in reducing the separation of abdominal muscle (Diastasis Recti). We have already learned to isolate our TVA by contracting our pelvic floor. Repeat this exercise, this time hold the contraction for up to 10 seconds. Your goal is to achieve ten repetitions of 10 second holds. The above exercises are designed to allow you to gently begin to exercise your body focusing on strengthening the muscles which have been affected by pregnancy and childbirth. They are safe to perform from childbirth.

PREGNANCY Article by member: Bonding with baby
How I love my children by Emma Lelliott. Mum to Owen and Natasha. So there you are! You’ve waited so long for this fantastic event! It’s happened! The initial euphoria is over. 10 weeks has passed since you came home, everyone’s back to their regular routine and you’re at home with this fantastic creation. So what’s the problem? You know that you should be finding fun activities to do with your baby to stimulate and develop them, but every time you go to do something the phone goes, or the doorbell rings or you know you ought to get the washing done and buy some food! It all seems to be down to you and its daunting isn’t it? I know that’s how I felt with both of my two when they were born. And I know I worried constantly that I was somehow not helping them to progress as quickly as the other babies around. So I took myself out of the home and went to a music and dance class with them. It was great! I knew that every week I’d have some dedicated time on a one to one basis with my baby. And we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves together and got to know each other better. I learnt what their bodies could do and how they should be moving and that if Charlie round the corner was doing something else, it didn’t matter. And it was wonderful listening to them respond to songs and learn to babble along and discover their voices. It was great learning what simple thing I could do to stimulate them at home as well. As our household is such a musical one, it was great realising just how much I could use it to benefit my children as well. There’s nothing more thrilling than watching your baby learn to sit up on their own, or discover that their feet are attached to their legs and that they can move them themselves! Knowing that you helped them do this by learning with them is truly fulfilling. Often the simplest activity is the most benefit but it’s not obvious and sometimes it needs to be shown to you. My children are a constant voyage of discovery for me and I know that our abiding closeness was formed in those really early stages. As the old TV advert said “I loved it so much, I bought the company!” I now run my own weekly MAD Academy classes in the area and still continue to benefit as I watch a whole new series of mums learn to have fun as well as educate their babies. PREGNANCY Article by member: Birth Trauma and CranioSacral
The CranioSacral Effect on Birth Trauma By Gillian Bowers CranioSacral therapist T: 01628-482170 M: 07971-816611 www.gillianbowers.co.uk How would you, as an adult, respond to a stressful event? Your heart might race, your breathing may become shallow and rapid, your blood might drain from various parts of your body, you could feel tense and agitated, and there may be effects on your digestive system, from butterflies in the tummy, to nausea, vomiting or worse. Not pleasant! Some babies find the experience of birth a stressful event, and will react in the same way – with a racing heart, breathing changes, a tight diaphragm, muscular contraction, digestive shutdown and agitation. Luckily babies are very resilient, but some remain in this state of shock, and go on to display symptoms such as colic, poor sleep, restlessness, distress, and an inability to “switch off”. Once the system is in shock, it makes coping with life difficult, making everything in life more of a struggle. So what can help? CranioSacral therapy is a very gentle hands-on treatment which is particularly valuable for treating babies. The aim of treatment in these babies is to settle the system, to allow the baby to calm down and to experience the feeling of being relaxed. This can have a profound effect – many parents have commented that they have never seen their baby so calm and peaceful. Once a baby is relaxed, it can feed more easily, its digestive system is able to function more efficiently, and it can settle into sleep. Very powerful physical forces act on a baby during birth. Fortunately the body’s abilities to recover are also powerful, and for most of us the effects will be relatively minor. But with a difficult birth, where the baby’s head has been compressed for long periods, distorted due to the position the baby finds itself in, or pulled by forceps or ventouse, the body’s own healing and repair abilities may not be enough. If the bones of the baby’s skull are not able to release from their compressed or distorted position and return to their optimal arrangement, this can cause problems. The baby may only be comfortable with its head to one side, which can lead to flattening or moulding of the skull. Blood supply to the developing brain may be compromised, or nerves may be compressed. The baby may simply have a big headache! CranioSacral therapy can very gently release any restrictions and distortions and enable a balanced and healthy growth of the skull, and of the developing brain beneath. The earlier the treatment, the more easily this will occur, and the more complete the recovery.
