improving standard of rowing races, and Sunday as Festival Day with the sights, sounds and fun of the Dragon Boat racing, as well as the Sunday evening concert.

WELCOME From Sir Steve Redgrave CBE, DL and Lady Redgrave - Honorary Presidents It seems hard to believe that another 12 months has dashed by since the last Marlow Town Regatta & Festival, but we are both very pleased and proud to be welcoming you all again to now the11th such event - Marlow’s largest annual sporting and social occasion. Although we have all been benefiting from very good weather in recent weeks, such that we must all be asking ourselves if it can continue, the Marlow Town Regatta weekend has had such a good record over the last many years that we have every hope that it will continue again this year, to enable all to enjoy the whole three day programme. Yes, this year it is to be the first 3-day event, as the busy volunteer organising committee has again added a new feature to the weekend’s activities, this time being the ‘Battle of the Bands’ concert in the enlarged enclosure on Friday night. This new concert will be added to the now traditional programme of the weekend on and off the water, with Saturday being Regatta Day with its full day of an ever

We wish you all a very enjoyable weekend, and hope you will also visit the Craft Marquee, the Trade Stalls, the Marlow Showcase Stands, and of course the Funfair, and just soak up the happy family atmosphere of our own Marlow Town Regatta & Festival.

WELCOME Cllr Jocelyn Towns Town Mayor I am the Town Mayor and would like to welcome you to Marlow to this year’s Town Regatta and Festival, a key event in our annual calendar. As well as the Regatta, make sure you visit the Dragon Boat Racing on Sunday12th, a spectacle well worth watching and great fun for all the family, followed by an evening of music and fireworks. Please also take the time to visit our vibrant High Street, with its great selection of shops and coffee bars. I do hope you enjoy your visit to our lovely market town and please come back again next year.

James Campbell had been involved in

the Marlow Royal British Legion, arranging

the Town Regatta and Festival since the very beginning in 2000. When Marlow Regatta gave notice of their intended move to Dorney Lake in 2000, James was instrumental with others in forming a committee of individuals and organisations to consider a replacement for the Marlow Regatta, which had been so much part of the town since the 1850’s. Out of these meetings was born the Marlow Town Regatta & Festival, which was first held in 2001 and James became the first Chairman of the Management Committee.

Dragon Boat Timetable 08:00 Crew Registration & Safety briefings 09.30 First scheduled race (thereafter every 10-15 minutes) 16.00 Last Race 16.15 Presentation of Prizes

Dragon Boat Racing - A Brief History More than 2,300 years ago, Mi Lo River in the heart of China, witnessed the death of a poet and imperial advisor, Qu Yuan. At the same time it witnessed the birth of a sport that would not only conquer the hearts of the people of China but also those of the people in other parts of the world. At the corrupted court of the Emperor, Qu Yuan was the honest man who wanted to improve the lives of the ordinary people. However the courtiers opposed any changes and most of all resented Qu Yuan’s popularity. They convinced the Emperor that Qu Yuan was a traitor, planning to bring down the Empire. Distraught by the allegation and thrown out of the court, Qu Yuan wandered the provinces of China, composing poems stating his love for the people. And so he did until the day when he could not bear his sorrow and solitude, or

56

maybe his inability to help those who needed that help. He threw himself into the Mi Lo River. Local fishermen, who saw his desperate act, attempted to rescue Qu Yuan. Beating the drums to scare the hungry fish and working with their paddles furiously, they tried to recover the poet. In vain! Qu Yuan drowned and his body was not recovered. But from then on, every year there was a race to commemorate the death of the hero. This tradition has turned into a national sport in China.
