Welcome to SE21 So Freedom day, has come and gone and life has pretty much stayed the same. One big change is the amount of events that are happening. As usual I have rounded up all the great events taking place in and around Dulwich. It is great to see regular events like the parkrun starting up again (Dulwich Park, Peckham Rye Park and more). Even better news is the Dulwich Park Fair and the Peckham Rye Fete are back next month, so I have given you a sneak preview of what is to come. The events pages start on page 6. There are seven pages of online and in person events happening in and around Dulwich. So there is plenty to do right on our doorsteps. Last month I started my new business networking meeting for members of Entrepreneurs Circle. The meeting took place upstairs at The Lordship Pub and was a great success. If you run a business, I can definitely recommend it. More details on page 29. The Last Word this month goes to local resident Lee Moffett. Lee is, a local Property Investor and Developer based in West Dulwich. Read the full story on page 32. If you would like to featured in The Last Word, please do get in touch. Until next time.

Thursday 5 – Tuesday 17 August: Journey Exhibition
11.30am-5.30pm. The Jeannie Avent Gallery presents ‘Journey’ A solo exhibition by local Conceptual Artist, Laura Hepworth Through this life we live, we set ourselves on a never ending path. Making decisions and taking risks that change and affect the course of our path in ways that widen our way of thinking, dreaming and living. For each lesson we go through, we give ourselves the allowance to be open embracing, to feeling. Of the many things we feel on our own or even as a collective we experience growth, love, creativity, grace, hope, empathy etc.. Journey is the story we tell each day to put our stamp on the world, it’s the people we carry with us who support, empower and inspire us as we go on. Through colour and Mark making Laura creates a language in which her own energy is transformed from the way she takes in her surroundings wherever that might be, near or far, past or present. Join us on Thursday 5th August, where the gallery will be open to the public from 11:30am until late evening in celebration of the exhibition’s opening. Pre-Holiday Gardening Jobs Garden Talk with Janine Winlaw | Instagram @janinewinlaw As well as planning everything else, a few hours work in the garden before you go away will make it much more welcoming when you return.
Lawns Mow the lawn a few days before you leave but don’t cut it too short if the weather is hot and dry – long grass copes much better with drought than short grass. Edge with long handled shears to neaten it up and clear edges of weeds and areas for slugs to lurk in. If the grass is long when you get back keep your blades raised for the first few cuts. And don’t despair if it’s yellow. Grass is pretty tough and will soon green up again after a good downpour.
Containers Put your potted plants on saucers, or even something bigger like a paddling pool, to collect possible rainwater. (But check the forecast, as plants don’t like to be in standing water.) Putting plants on soaked capillary matting can also get them through a week without being watered. Moving pots to semi shade can avoid them drying out and grouping them together will help them shade each other and share humidity. If there’s room, sink favourite plants into soil to keep them cool and drench the surrounding earth. A mulch of mini bark or grit will help keep the moisture in too, but water well first.
Borders Deadhead repeat flowering plants like cosmos and roses before you go away, to come home to lovely blooms instead of a sea of fallen petals. If you’re away for three weeks remove all the flowers as well as the dead heads. Tatty looking hardy geraniums can be cut right back, as can nepeta and geum. With flowering spikes like delphiniums or penstemon, just cut off the spent flower stem. Weeds are easier to pull up when they’re small, so removing them before you go away is really worth it. Take care to dig out the whole root of perennial weeds such as thistle, bindweed and dandelion. 12 | SE21 - August 2021
Mulching your borders with bulky organic matter such as compost, well-rotted manure or bark will keep weeds down and moisture in – make sure you drench the soil first. Or just concentrate on newly planted or thirsty shrubs and perennials and don’t worry so much about drought tolerant ones like iris, lavender and rosemary. Give your garden a really thorough soak, ideally the morning you leave, particularly if the forecast is for it to be hot and ideally enlist someone to pop in again if possible. If you go away at lot, think about growing more drought tolerant plants. As a rule grey/silver, small or fleshy leaved plants such as stachys, verbena and sedum will survive without much water once they’re established. If the forecast is for lots of rain, remember to protect plants like hostas from slugs – try organic wool slug pellets. Check stakes on tall perennials – a windy summer gale plus rain can quickly flatten your garden.
Fruit & Veg Weeding should be a priority, go over with a hoe to remove weed seedlings and finish off by hand, weeding anything close to plants. Pick as much as you can from repeat flowering crop like peas and beans, removing all the pods and pick all the developing courgettes - otherwise you’ll come home to marrows galore. Water thoroughly before you go but ideally persuade a friend to come and pick in return for watering. Net brassicas to keep off cabbage white butterflies.Tie in anything that needs it such as tomatoes, beans and sweet peas.

Tomato Salad with Feta & Toasted Pine Nuts Recipes from Suzanne James | www.suzannejames.co.uk
T
omatoes, for most of us, are most definitely the best of the best when it comes to summer produce. I love a homegrown tomato and have strong childhood memories of my father’s greenhouse, and the flavor of those freshly picked, sun warmed tomatoes. We used to pick them and eat them like apples! In season, British tomatoes could be mistaken for an entirely different fruit from the flavorless imposters you find at the grocery store year-round. They’re filled with so much juice that they’re heavy, they smell sweet before you even taste them, and they come in what seems like a million shapes and sizes and colors. The season might be short, and very much weather dependent, but do make the most of these beauties whilst you can. There are a million recipes to choose from, and this is one of my favourites because it is very quick and easy and allows the flavours of the tomatoes to shine, which is just as it should be! (serves 4)
Ingredients • 3 tablespoons of toasted pine nuts • 1 pound of mixed tomatoes, some sliced, some cut into wedges • Salt & Freshly Ground Black Pepper • ¼ Cup of Balsamic Lemon Vinaigrette • ¼ Cup chopped parsley, plus leaves for serving • ¼ Cup crumbled feta cheese Plus for the Lemon Vinaigrette • 2/3 Cup olive oil • 1/3 Cup fresh lemon juice • Salt & Freshly Ground Black Pepper
Method 1) Preheat the oven to 3500C/1800F/Gas mark 4 and toast the pine nuts on a baking tray until golden brown – this should take about 5-10 minutes, but keep a close eye on them and give them a shakeup / mix around a couple of times. 2) Arrange tomatoes on a plate; season lightly with salt & pepper. 3) Make the vinaigrette by whisking oil and lemon juice in a small bowl, season with salt & pepper 14 | SE21 - August 2021
then add ¼ cup parsley and two thirds of the pine nuts. Mix well and then drizzle over the tomatoes. 4) Top with feta, parsley leaves and the remaining pine nuts.

All About Gratitude
Fitness tips with Leanne Spencer | www.bodyshotperformance.com
T
his month we’re talking about gratitude. According to Cambridge Dictionary gratitude is defined as: “a strong feeling of appreciation to someone or something for what the person has done to help you” How is “gratitude’ related to health and fitness, I hear you say? You might be surprised to find out what impact it can have on your body and therefore on your wellbeing.
Gratitude and its Effects on the Body Robert Emmons s a researcher who has done a lot of work around gratitude, his research plus others have given us these insights into gratitude and what it does for our wellbeing. Gratitude changes our hormones. Particularly, it boosts oxytocin, which makes us feel bonded and connected: • to ourselves • to other people • to our environment • to society And that feels amazing, oxytocin is a wonderful thing. Parents have it when they hold their newborn babies, mothers have it when they breastfeed (most of the time). I get it when I stare deep into my rescue dog’s big brown eyes, and I can see her blissing out with the oxytocin as well. Oxytocin also makes us more optimistic – that is what the studies have found, and it boosts happiness. It is impossible to feel grateful and anxious at the same time. Or grateful and angry, grateful and stressed, grateful and sad. Gratitude is an incredibly powerful way to change your emotional soundtrack. I think this is such an easy thing in some ways to do. You can get oxytocin: • through laughter • through touch (like massage) • through music, listening to and making music • we get it from being with other people • we get it from sharing how we feel It is an integral part of being human.
Gratitude is Democratically Available to Everybody Another key aspect to gratitude as a part of your 16 | SE21 - August 2021
health and fitness strategy is, that it is something that is democratically available as well and it’s free – anybody can practice gratitude. Whether it is spontaneous, such as looking out the window, thinking “I am very lucky to have x!” or “what a beautiful view”. Or whether it is deliberate. We can practice gratitude deliberately as part of your meditation, for example, or as I do every morning: I’ll sit and read a short paragraph from my nature book and then I’ll reflect on what I am grateful for. So, in that way, I am being proactive and purposeful about my gratitude and other times it happens spontaneously.
Start a Proactive and Purposeful Gratitude Practice So give that a try, maybe set a 10-day resolution to every morning, think about what it is you are grateful for, or just open up your awareness as you are going about your daily life and think, “wow, that’s incredibly beautiful!”. Just appreciate and be grateful for the fact that you got to see and witness that thing or that particular moment. So, that is everything from me this month, and all the very best for now, stay healthy.

Dancing in Covid Times Education News from Alleyn's | www.alleyns.org.uk Ruth Seager, Acting Head of Dance at Alleyn’s, tells us why, especially in these times, dancing could do your child the world of good.
I
t is well known that dance is beneficial to both our physical and mental health, particularly during times of stress and this has become more salient over the successive lockdowns we have undergone. People often say, ‘I just need an evening out and a good dance!’ and it is true that we all need to ‘let off some steam’ occasionally. A huge benefit of dance is that it is a mindful practice that enables us to be ‘in the moment’. When we dance, we leave our worries behind and pour our emotions into physical expression.
THE KITCHEN WILL DO! Dance clubs are of course a brilliant way for your child to develop their innate love of movement but not all clubs have reopened, and spaces might be scarce for those that have. You don’t need a club, though to get your child up and dancing and enjoying the benefits of dance. You don’t even have to have a special space – and we know everyone enjoys a dance in the kitchen!
EXPRESS YOURSELF From improvising to your young child’s favourite nursery rhymes to boogying to some of your child’s favourites or your old favourites, impromptu dancing makes you feel good and gets those endorphins flowing as well as reducing levels in the blood of the stress hormone, cortisol. Remember, there isn’t a right or wrong way to move – it’s all about expressing yourself – so if they see you enjoying yourself they are more likely to do so too!
from Frozen dancing to ballet, contemporary and hip hop, there is something for every age group and every level. I am sure that the dance industry will return to some sort of normality soon. If your child (or you!) have enjoyed taking part in virtual dance sessions during lockdown why not try to find a local, in-person, dance class? Not only will you be investing in your child’s or your own mental and physical health, but you will also be helping to keep the arts alive, so please… keep dancing!
VIRTUAL DANCE SESSIONS
USEFUL LINKS
Dance teachers and choreographers are now using a variety of methods to deliver virtual dance sessions for many ages and dance styles, and lots of these are completely free. While dancing in front of a screen isn’t always ideal, the big advantage is that everyone can discover the joy of dance and, in doing so, improve their health and well-being. Here we go again: Probate fees on the increase
J
ust when we all thought "it was safe to go back into the water” seems more appropriate for the recent proposed increase in probate fees than its original appearance in the Jaws movie, some 45 years ago. Despite the postponement of the last proposed probate fee increase by the government back in 2019, The Ministry of Justice (MoJ) has just issued a new consultation paper to increase the current probate fees. In summary, the MoJ have proposed increasing the current probate fee of £215 for non-professionals and £155 for professionals to a single fee of £273. However, the MoJ do not term their proposed new fee structure as a fee increase but as follows: “We are looking to align the fee payable for probate applications with the cost of providing that service for all users.” The positive expression of the proposed fee increase by the MoJ is somewhat more palatable than the previously aborted 2019 proposed fee increase by central government. The government’s proposed fee increase in April 2019 was a tiered probate fee system from £750 - £6,000 based upon the size of the estate, for all estates greater than £300,000. Whereas, the current MoJ proposal is less penal and a single fee, irrespective of the probate applicant. The one-off single fee of £273, results in an increase of 27% for non-professional probate applicants and an increase of 76% for professional probate applicants. The MoJ, have stated that their proposed new fee structure would achieve the following three objectives: “Firstly, it removes a now unjustified discrepancy in the way that fees are charged, which differs depending on who applies. Secondly, it will eliminate the public subsidy for the probate application process – it currently costs HMCTS (HM Courts and Tribunals Service) more to process applications than the fees it receives. Finally, it raises crucial income for HMCTS, in support of the Lord Chancellor’s statutory and constitutional duty to ensure access to justice.” It may be somewhat surprising that it has taken policy makers until 2021 to recognise
22 | SE21 - August 2021
that the current difference in probate fee dependent upon the applicant, professional or non-professional is somewhat a misnomer. The increased fee would contribute to plugging the 2019-20, £85m deficit in the family jurisdiction service which is currently funded by taxpayers. From 2022-23 onwards the proposed fee increase would raise annually in the region of £23-25m. This increase in revenue according to the MoJ would enable HM Courts and Tribunals Service to run an efficient and effective courts system; and allow the probate service to recover the costs of processing probate applications from its users. Prima facie the proposed fee increase and the explanations afforded by the MoJ seem wholly plausible. However, despite the carefully crafted consultation paper, the MoJ, have made no direct reference to the single most important concern for all parties engaged in the probate market. Does and will an efficient and effective courts system mean and/or result in a material reduction in the lengthy delays currently being experienced in administration of probate cases in England & Wales? The MoJ consultation period ends on 23 September 2021 and there would not be any fee increase if the proposal was accepted until at the earliest Spring 2022. The proposal is not all doom and gloom. Probate applications for estates below £5,000 would continue to be exempt from paying a probate fee and applicants would still have the opportunity to apply for a remission through the Help with Fees scheme when eligible. Those applicants who are ineligible but still believe a fee remission would be warranted, they have the opportunity to request the use of the Lord Chancellor’s exceptional power to waive fees.

Keeping pets safe in hot weather
Pets Corner with Leonie St Clair | www.londondogstraining.co.uk
I
t’s nearly holiday season and the thermometer mercury is rising. Many of us will be going away and a fair few will be taking their dogs. However, even for those set to enjoy the intermittent heat on home shores, please remember that our pets do not cope as well in the heat as do we. Pet thermoregulatory mechanisms only really include panting, some sweating from the paws and radiation heat loss from fur- these systems are not as efficient for bodily cooling as is as the human ability to sweat all over. Under conditions of intense heat it does not take that long for a cat or a dog to suffer heatstroke. Hyperthermia is a life threatening, medical emergency, where high temperatures and humidity cause the major internal organs, including the brain, to start to shut down, eventually leading to seizures, coma and death. Broadly, when temperatures exceed 39 degrees centigrade, steps should be taken to provide shade and cool the animal.
Quick guide to keeping pets happy and free from harm in the heat • Never leave your dog or cat in a parked car, even with a window slightly open. Quite aside from the risk of theft, it takes only takes minutes for pets to become extremely distressed in the heat of the car, even in shade. If you are travelling have the windows down with good air flow or air conditioning. • Never leave your house on a hot day, whether for a walk or car journey with your pet, without a bottle of water and something to drink it out of. • If you are sitting or picnicking in the park on a very hot day, be aware that your dog may get overly hot much more quickly than you. Find shade or take a large umbrella and plenty of water. • Don’t play strenuous ball or running games with your dog in intense heat. • Be aware, brachycephalic breeds (cats or dogs with squashed or shortened noses) find it much harder to pant and breathe in the heat. • Very young, very old, obese and sick animals will find hot weather more difficult. 24 | SE21 - August 2021
• City walks on hot pavements can be taxing for all sorts of dogs. Try walking barefoot and see how you like it. Keep an eye on your pet and look for signs of discomfort, seeking shade and dispensing water as necessary. • On very hot days, cats should not be shut into areas like a conservatory or shed- either can heat up very quickly- check that your pet, especially cats, have not sneaked in. Ensure there are shaded, cool areas in the home your pet has easy access to. • A trip to the groomers can help long-coated breeds and don’t forget breeds with white coats, single coats or hairless types need sun protection for their skin. • A water-bottle partly filled with cool water or a dampened towel placed on the floor, make handy cooling mats which your pet can lie on. • Learn to recognise the signs of heatstroke; extreme panting, dark red or grey gums, drooling, anxiety, confusion/disorientation, lethargy, vomiting, even diarrhoea. • In cases of suspected heatstroke, seek shade and apply cool but not cold water to the pet’s underarms, groin and pads. Do not immerse or cover the pet with water as this will heat your pet up more. Fan the animal to increase cooling. If he can drink, give small amounts of water but do not force drinking or let him gulp it. Try to keep your pet moving slowly. Speak to a vet as soon as possible.
It’s mostly common sense but so easy to forget in the heat of the moment!

fter months of torpitude, the mighty Dulwich Hamlet - leonine, phoenixlike, Framtonesque even - has risen from its enforced slumbers, shaken the sleep from its hair and has come alive. So what’s happening we hear you roar? Well first of all Gavin Rose, long standing bossman at the Hamlet, and all round football genius, has begun to assemble a squad to see off all comers in the new season. Some old faces remain in the squad. Charlie Grainger will remain steadfast between the sticks, like a Varangian guard protecting the honour of the Pink and Blues’ goal. The splendidly vocal Sanchez Ming will carry on seeing off opposition wingers while tormenting Flash Gordon and plotting the overthrow of Planet Earth. And super tall goal machine the much-loved Danny Mills will continue to leap above opposition defences like a majestic migrating salmon on the River Peck. The club has welcomed new players too, including Higgs, Splatt and Barnum-Bobb. They sound like a firm of dodgy entertainment lawyers, but are in reality bone fida non-league galacticos and winners all the way. Thrills and spills are guaranteed down at the Hamlet as a result. So why not head down to the club website and purchase yourself a season ticket for the bargain basement price of £169 (way less with concessions). For this, you can waltz in through the clubhouse door, grab a beer and some crisps and go watch all (men and women’s) home games in the 2021-22 season. That’s well over 40 games we reckon, give or take. You can buy your season ticket and check out details of all pre-season games and league fixtures at www. pitchero.com/clubs/dulwichhamlet/. And you make sure you have all the right gear and look dead smart by kitting yourself and the kids out via the online shop at www.dhst.org.uk Now has anything else been happening on the

Tuscan slopes of Champion Hill you ask? Well not really. Other than everyone’s favourite six foot seven ex-footballer and star of TV and radio Peter Crouch becoming a director at the Hamlet. Crouch, who kicked off his professional career on loan to the Hamlet from Spurs 21 years ago before becoming a Premier league and England star, has vowed to help the club on and off the pitch. Great news. Just don’t stand behind him at matches. So there you go. It feels like things are inching back to normality at Dulwich Hamlet, the Pride of SE22. So we’ll see you down there cheering on the girls and boys. Up the Hamlet.

The Last Word – Lee Moffatt What do you most value about your street? The community feel of our street, everyone is very friendly, and children all play out together. We all look out for one another. I find that quite rare in London these days.
What one thing would you change? A better internet connection! I unfortunately live on a street with no high-speed broadband which is painful when running your own business from home.
Do you know your neighbours? Yes. Most of our neighbors are young families with children who go to the local schools so we all know each other. We have an active WhatsApp group for the street. Conversations range from organizing socially distanced evening drinks on our driveway, trick or treating with the children to helping out with car trouble or assistance with DIY.
The most famous person you’ve met? Hello, I’m Lee Moffatt, a local Property Investor and Developer based in West Dulwich. I run a small property investment company with my wife Elaine. We work with busy individuals with an interest in investing in the SE London Property Market. Our projects usually involve taking neglected, unloved houses and making them into beautiful homes for families and young professionals.
How long have you lived in the area? I’ve lived in West Dulwich for around a year and a half now.
What brought you here? When we bought our previous home, as a young couple, we did not think about distance from schools. We now have a 3 year old son, William, who was getting to school age so we needed to move. Dulwich was top of our list due to the choice of schools available. He now attends Rosemead which is just short walk from our home.
What has changed most during that time? The biggest change has been recently. As we moved mid-Lockdown we were not able enjoy much of the local shops, pubs, restaurants and café’s which was disappointing. With everything now starting to open-up we have just started to properly explore the area and what it has to offer. 32 | SE21 - August 2021
Probably Prince William, I bumped into him when I was at the University of St Andrews during my student days.
Do you belong to any groups? I’m a member of the Entrepreneurs Circle, they recently setup a local Dulwich Business Owners Group. It’s great place to meet up with other local business owners as we get to share all the challenges and successes of running our own business.
What is your favourite shop? Scotch Meat Stores on Rosendale Road. They should really consider their name as they sell so much more than just meat it’s so easy to overlook if you never been in. From quality meat, fresh fruit and veg to fresh bread, cheese, herbs and Pastries they have it all. Top quality produce and all reasonably priced.
What was the last thing you bought there? A couple of Rib Eye Steaks and Bag of Fresh Thyme.
My secret ambition.. I’ve spent some time exploring the mountains of China. It is some of the most serene and aweinspiring scenery I’ve experienced in my travels. I’d love to create some sort of nature retreat in that type of environment for Busy Execs and Entrepreneurs to get away from the stresses of their business and focus on themselves.
