Welcome to SE21 Our last issue of the year and what a year it has been! I don’t think we are going to forget 2020 in a hurry. At the time of writing we are still in Lockdown 2.0 with no concrete news whether it will be lifted on the 2nd December. So as always please do check ahead if you are looking to go to an event or visit a shop, to make sure they are open. Even though many small business have had to close again for a month, so many now have a click and collect option; so please do support them if you can. Our events pages start on page 6 this month with five full pages of online and in person events you can go to. Again, everything is subject to change, so please do check ahead. And So To Bed... Garden Talk with Janine Winlaw | Instagram @janinewinlaw It’s chilly out there, the lawn’s looking muddy and the borders tatty, but a bit of tidying now will make the garden look neat over the Christmas period and get you one step ahead for spring…

Cut Back… …but don’t be too tidy. Some perennials such as sedum have attractive seed heads that look great covered in frost or dew. Ornamental grasses also add winter structure as do dried out hydrangea heads – both can be pruned in spring. Cut back perennials that are looking tatty and brown such as peonies and Verbena bonariensis to around to 5cm from ground level. (Leave more tender plants such as penstemon until April or May after the frosts.) Wisteria can be pruned now and give roses a light trim, removing long or damaged shoots. Now they’re dormant, apples, pears, currants and autumn fruiting raspberries can also be pruned from now on. Likewise, trim off any dead, diseased or rubbing branches from shrubs and trees. Acers and birch are particularly suited to pruning now, before the sap starts to flow. But there’s no need to go overboard as many plants such as buddleja and late flowering clematis can wait until early February.

Reorganise And Plant… This is a good time to move plants that are in the wrong place – too big, not thriving or overcrowded, adding organic matter as you go. Since they’re dormant, as long as the ground’s not frozen, they will adjust to being moved or divided. Try to work on boards, so as not to compact the soil. You can also plant trees, shrubs and bare root fruit trees, soft fruit bushes and roses now.

Clear Up Throw away any annuals such as sweet peas and cosmos. You can always replace with cyclamen or viola for winter colour Keep raking leaves from the lawn and remove them from borders -– especially rose leaves with black spot (burn or destroy anything diseased rather than composting it). If you have masses of leaves, bag them up – making a few holes in the bag - and leave them at the end of 12 | SE21 - December 2020

the garden for fantastic leaf mould. Keep on top of weeds and clear up messy areas with piles of pots or clutter that create a winter home for snails and slugs. Clean and store stakes and garden furniture.

Mulch Finish off the borders with a mulch of bulky organic matter or bark, especially around anything recently pruned, newly planted or tender such as Verbena bonariensis or penstemon. This will improve soil texture, suppress weeds and add a bit of frost protection. (Ideally this is done before the soil gets too cold.)

Lawn Care If the weather’s mild you may still need to cut the grass in dry weather – on a high setting. But keep off the lawn if it’s wet or frosty.

Finally… Pick some holly, cotoneaster, ivy and other evergreens with berries for the festive period! Happy Christmas!

Parsnip & Apple Cake With Walnut Frosting Recipes from Suzanne James | www.suzannejames.co.uk Method

It has been a pretty rotten year all round, but there is nothing like a slice of cake to cheer you up! This is one of the cakes we have been selling at Fifty Seven, our venue (now takeaway in COVID times) at Northcross Road. As it is made with Parsnips & Apple we feel sure that it qualifies as a slice of your five a day!

Ingredients You will need a 12inch deep round tin & parchment to line it.

For the Cake • • • • • • • • • • • •

230g self raising flour 1tsp baking powder 1.5tsp cinnamon powder 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg 1tsp mixed spice 200g caster sugar 100g walnuts chopped 3 eggs 150ml sunflower oil 400g grated parsnips* 100g grated apples* *(Squeeze in a tea towel to remove all juice) 2 oranges zested

For the Frosting • • • •

1x 200g tub cream cheese (light preferably) 250g unsalted butter 200g icing sugar 1 tsp vanilla extract Plus chopped walnuts to decorate!

1) Preheat the oven to 1500C. 2) Sieve together the self-raising flour, baking powder, cinnamon powder, ground nutmeg & mixed spice. 3) Sprinkle in the caster sugar. 4) Chop the walnuts and add to the mixture. 5) Beat the eggs and sunflower oil together to emulsify and add to the mixture. 6) Grate the parsnips and apples and squeeze through a tea towel to remove all the juice, then fold into the mixture. 7) Add the zest from two oranges to the mixture and fold in. 8) Line your 12inch deep round tin with parchment & pour the cake mix in. 9) Bake 25 – 30 minutes at 1500C. 10) Combine the frosting ingredients – cream cheese, butter, icing sugar and vanilla extract. 11) Beat until smooth. 12) When the cake is cool pour over the cake and then pop the chopped walnuts on the top. Enjoy!

Five Signs Of Burnout

How To Spot When You May Be On The Burnout Spectrum This month I’d like to talk to you about the five signs of burnout, that show you may be moving on that huge burnout spectrum. Perhaps a few red flags going up in terms of your health and wellbeing, all the way through to burnout. Now it’s a long way to go from these early warning signs, but it would be great, if we could identify these things to stop things in their tracks in the early part of that burnout spectrum. I was influenced by Gail North and Herbert Freudenberger‘s burnout spectrums. They created the burnout spectrum with 12 points.

1) Apathy And Anhedonia Apathy means you can’t be bothered and everything feels like an effort. Anhedonia is a loss of pleasure in things you would ordinarily find pleasurable. You used to love a game of tennis or a dog walk. Now you just don’t feel it. You don’t get the joy from it. Combined with apathy, you can’t be bothered to go out and do those things and try to get that joy back. This is a sign on the burnout spectrum.

2) Feeling Deeply Fatigued You feel deeply fatigued, real tiredness, tiredness in the bones. Tiredness perhaps that you just don’t seem to be able to overcome or even get enough sleep to overcome.

3) Finding It Hard To Shut Off You may feel you just can’t shut off. You might find that you’re dreaming about work or dreaming about some of the problems and anxieties in your life. That your mind is racing and you find it very, very difficult to close that off and to move on. You may find it challenging to get any headspace.

4) Mood Or Personality Changes Maybe somebody else, a spouse or a colleague has said, you know, you’re behaving a little differently. You seem unsettled. You appear distracted. You’re simply just not yourself. These changes in mood and behavioural problems can be a sign of being 16 | SE21 - December 2020

on the burnout spectrum. You may notice this in yourself as well. You may feel that you’re not your usual effervescent self.

5) The Body Keeps The Score This last point is arguably the most important, which is that the body keeps the score. Even if you’re able to push through, ploughing on regardless, which is so common in business and British culture. Know that you can ignore the signs the body sends you, but it does keep the score. You might notice hair loss. You might notice weight gain or weight loss. Experience other kinds of physical symptoms such as headaches, unexplained, aches and pains. I’ve even known more dramatic symptoms than that. For example, the scarring of a forehead. You can try and push these signs of burnout stuff aside and ignore the red flags to your health and wellbeing, but it will come back eventually to rear its head. So please don’t ignore it.

ink Age Southwark is a vibrant local charity providing friendly volunteer support to isolated people aged over 60. They work to reduce loneliness by helping older people and those living with dementia to maintain active lives, by providing befriending, group activities, transport, and light DIY and gardening services across the community. The charity will soon be launching their Big Give Christmas Challenge with the opportunity to raise ÂŁ24,000 in just 1 week! These funds will be used to reduce isolation and loneliness experienced by older people living in Southwark, by enabling Link Age Southwark to diversify the way they offer their groups, to include face-to-face, online platforms and conference calling. Ultimately, this will help them to ensure nobody is excluded in the community. Link Age Southwarkâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s social and activity groups provide a much-needed break in the week for some, a chance to socialise and move about. For others, the groups may be the only time they speak to another person for several days or weeks at a time. Last year alone, the charity ran 26 groups who met 758 times, with a record 6,160 attendees in total.

As government guidelines continue to change, it is essential for Link Age Southwark to adapt and expand the way they offer their groups to the older people they work with. Twelve Days Of Christmas Memo For Lockdown Puppy Owners Lockdown has seen an unprecedented increase in puppy ownership. Many of you are first time dog owners. With the Christmas season now only weeks away, I felt it would be useful for newbie owners to have a quickie Christmas pitfalls puppy guide. I have included links to further information. 1) Many human foods are toxic and even deadly for dogs. Chocolate, dried fruits, grapes, nuts, onions are just a few of the dangerous ingredients that can land your pup at the vet, or worse. 2) Christmas plants and decorations can also be very dangerous if ingested. Cabling for fairy lights and batteries are just one example of things your puppy may try to chew. See: www.bluecross.org.uk/pet-advice/christmasdangers-dogs 3) Don’t forget external hazards like anti-freeze, sometimes present in floor cleaners. It tastes like nectar to your pup but is deadly in even tiny quantities. 4) Think about using baby gates, a pen or crate so your puppy or dog can be given a safe area when you cannot supervise. 5) Remember pups need 18-20 hours’ sleep a day. Ensure your pup has a quiet area and encourage chew and settle periods. No-one wants an adrenalin charged puppy. 6) At Christmas and other holidays, it is easy to get caught up in festivities and forget the young animal’s needs. Ensure your pup has an array of suitable edible chews, of different textures. These will keep her occupied when you are busy with presents or cooking. Remember, teething can be a protracted affair and the back teeth are still bedding in at twelve months. 7) Take time to teach your pup problem solving games as well as letting him run around. 8) Teach your pup to find things, put part of her daily food ration into toys so she can chew and snuffle for the goodies. 9) If your pup is short-haired, do get a coat for rainy or cold days. 10) Be careful not to over exercise pups and young dogs in wet or slippery conditions. Just prior to lockdown, DHWFC took on high-flying Dartford, coming from 0-2 behind to win a ripsnorter 3-2. All this in front of a rocking record crowd of 586. The Hamlet women now go top of their league. Unfortunately during lockdown all football below the National league has been put on ice. So while the “elite” Dulwich Hamlet men’s team continue to play behind closed doors, the women’s team must wait until 2 December to find out whether and when they can resume their allconquering season. In the meantime however, the club is very much alive and well. Christmas In An Unprecedented Time I guess if Stanley Adams was still alive in 2020 he would have rewritten his classic song “What a difference a day makes” and given us “What a difference a year makes”. Perhaps the first verse would read, 365 days later has brought us a pandemic with irreversible change. For as we look forward to Christmas and waving goodbye to 2020, we are all in a transformational different place from 365 days ago, yet we have to face the arrival of Christmas and all the things that we all assign to it. In many or some quarters the religious significance has long since been lost or forgotten. The economic landscape for everyone is different from what was perceived, planned or imaginable at the start of the year. Households across our region and nationwide has felt the effects of Covid-19. Whether it is furlough, loss of employment, business shut down or any combination plus more, households are experiencing the ongoing effects. All these transformation and unplanned effects have a direct impact on our Christmas plans. Therefore how will households cope with the festive season of 2020, whether in lockdown (stay-at-home safe) or tier 1, 2 or 3? This will be the real test of financial acumen and challenge. To understand how households were facing up to the challenge, some of our readers shared their opinions. “Control the controllables is the mantra for families this Christmas. Can you purchase less expensive smaller items for gifts? Are brands important or is there a similar less expensive alternative available that can also help the local economy. Shop local to save the high street. Make your own rather than buying in can help save pounds. From crackers to Christmas cards for family- recycle and reuse.” said Lawrence Wilson a small business owner with a young family. The lesson is children value the time spent with them greater than being showered with lavish boxes of gifts.” Petra Boucher a local VA provided an alternative strategy that will see her through Christmas 2020. “Experience has taught me that December and January can be expensive months. So for several years I have arranged my finances so I my recurring debts are paid via direct debit. However, they are paid over 10 months or less which means I have no direct debits in December and January. This reduces any financial pressure on me for Christmas.”

Seven Tips for Christmas 2020 Consequently, for Christmas 2020, more than ever consider the following seven tips: 1) Set a budget for any planned expenditure; 2) Spend within your budget. The lesson of 2020 is tomorrow events will not occur as planned; 3) Avoid any form of borrowing; 4) Keep it simple, remember just like how children spell love, happiness can also be spelt TIME! 5) Be creative, ask what can we make rather than buy; 6) Past behaviour may not serve us well today. Communicating Effectively Education News from Alleyn's | www.alleyns.org.uk Karen Lane, Speech and Language Therapist at Alleyn’s Junior School, talks about how we can help develop our child’s speech.

arents and carers play an integral role in helping children develop speech and language skills. Many of us may have experienced the temptation to hand a child a device to distract them, especially with the added stresses of our current challenging times, but are we missing out on opportunities to teach our toddlers and young children real communication skills?

Play Creative play is essential for unlocking emerging vocabulary. Teddy bears’ picnics, den building, Playdoh, and sand play are all great shared activities, and for babies as young as six months you can use single word naming to model words. By 12 months a toddler should have 50 – 100 words. After that you can model two- and three-word phrases to help your child develop short sentences by two years old. Remember, there is a wide range of “normal” so don’t panic if your two-year-old isn’t speaking in sentences – they may need a little longer.

Articulation Sounds develop at different ages and not all children speak clearly at first. If other people can’t understand your child at three however, it might be time to get an assessment. Therapy waiting times can be long so it’s better to seek a GP referral early than assume your child will grow out of it. When children have difficulty expressing their thoughts and feelings or find it hard to understand rules for social interaction, their frustrations can result in behaviour difficulties. Be patient and try to understand why your child is frustrated. Get down to their level, maintain eye contact and give them time to express themselves.

Questions You might be keen to impart your knowledge to your child and fill them up with answers to 26 | SE21 - December 2020

questions like, “What is the capital city of...?”. This might impress the in-laws but rote learning is less valuable than asking open ended questions like “What do you think about…?” or “I wonder what would happen if…”, which are more likely to stimulate a child’s thinking, develop a love of learning and also their ability to use reasoning skills when they start school.

Reading Reading to your child can help them develop a thirst for good stories. Even after they have learned to read, continue reading to your child to help expand their vocabulary, their understanding of story structures and to provide you both with valuable time together. Play family games like Boggle, Blurt, and Articulate too, to boost your child’s vocabulary. Delayed speech and language development can impact a child’s progress at school. If you feel worried, trust your instincts and consult your GP for a referral to a Speech and Language Therapist. Empowering children to communicate effectively can help them unleash a lifelong love of learning.

entral Southwark Community Hub (CSCH) is a charity based in Camberwell tackling food insecurity in the local community. During lockdown in Spring, the number of people they were supporting on a weekly basis increased from 30 to nearly 200. They expect to see another surge in demand during these last two months of the year. In Southwark, 40% of children live in poverty - for these children and their families, Christmas can be a particularly difficult time. CSCH has recently launched it’s Christmas Hamper Appeal, raising money to provide local

The Last Word – Alastair Carnegie What do you most value about the area? There is a fantastic community spirit which has emerged during the pandemic. From the outset, a street WhatsApp group was created with over 100 people to support each other. Covid continues to be a serious concern, but it has made many people look at how they live and interact with others, which is not always typical of London neighborhoods. This has reinforced my positive feelings about the area and in particular our street.

What one thing would you change? The traffic has worsened over the past 15 years, the current road closures in place and further restrictions have not helped. It takes longer than ever to travel between East and West Dulwich, which is frustrating for an estate agent travelling to viewings and appraisals.

Do you belong to any groups?

I am a local resident and owner of Carnegie Estate Agents, managing the recently set up a Dulwich office linked to my family business in Hertfordshire. After many years of working in the international property industry I am keen to ensure people get great value and have a positive experience.

How long have you lived in the area? I have lived in London for the past 25 years, formally as a ‘north of the river’ resident. Love wrenched me out of my comfort zone down to South East London, specifically West Dulwich, 17 years ago. It was not as bad as I’d feared…!

What brought you here? We needed a bigger house and found the perfect renovation project here on Clive Road. We spent a year doing it up with a 4-year old and new baby in tow, spending a large amount of time living between parents’ and friends’ houses. The fabulous schools, sense of community and access to parks and the wood were big attractions.

What has changed most during that time? West Dulwich, in particular, has become busier and even more desirable as a place to live. There are now more shops, better performing local schools and numerous places to eat. The increasing number of local boutique shops is another great attraction. 32 | SE21 - December 2020

I have been a rugby coach at Old Alleynians Rugby club for the past 12 years. I currently coach the U15 Girls and help coach the U11 Boys. It’s a fantastic family club for all, and my whole family play or help out there – my wife may even make you a latte if you pop down on a Sunday morning!

Your favourite place for a night out? I’m a big fan of the local brewery taprooms of which there are plenty in this area, most notably the Brixton Brewery taproom, the Gypsy Hill Taproom, Canopy and The Bullfinch. I’m always happy to support local businesses, especially craft beer breweries!

Where are you to be found on a Saturday? Working! I own an Estate Agency so work on Saturday mornings. In the afternoon I enjoy dog walks with the family or catching up with friends and going out (in a post-Covid world) ....

What is your favourite place to eat? We had a fantastic meal out at the Dulwich Lyceum recently, delicious and reasonable. I also love Thai Crystal and the scotch eggs in the Rosendale pub are definitely worth a mention!

Where’s your favourite place to walk? I thoroughly enjoy the peace of Dulwich woods, one of the closest areas of true woodland to central London. www.carnegieuk.com
