Welcome I absolutely love this time of year. Christmas (which I love!) is over and we have a wonderful New Year to look forward too. With that in mind, Lawrence Roullier White has produced a rather different shopping page this month. It’s all about donating not dumping; why not take a look on page 28. December was a fantastic month with so much on locally including the wonderful Christmas Cracker, which had East Dulwich really buzzing. We have news of the Dulwich Charity lunch which took place at The Palmerston in early December, raising money for our local charity Link Age Southwark. Find out how much we raised on page 20.

The Dulwich Charity lunch raised a fabulous £2,200 for Link Age Southwark (formerly Dulwich Helpline & Southwark Churches Care). The lunch, now in its 14th year, is held every December and is a fantastic way for local business men and women to meet up and get in to the festive spirit. This year the lunch was held at The Palmerston, who kindly closed the pub for the event. Over 55 local business men and women got together and had a great Christmas party.The organisers enjoyed great support from local businesses who donated prizes for the raffle and came

along and enjoyed the day. New Year Recovery

or many people the seasonal break does not happen, if it happens at all, until the New Year. Whilst many of us are winding down a huge proportion of us just get busier and busier on the run up to Christmas and then go straight into full-on entertaining mode. When the last guest leaves on New Year’s Day, and we flop down in front of a film, this is when we can really relax. However, having had a house full for over week it might be hard to concentrate on the various plot twists of ‘Sherlock: The Abominable Bride’ (BBC1 9pm New Year’s Day) whilst contemplating the recovery that is required in the rooms around us. Here are a few home-hacks that you might not have thought of to help make every Hectic Host’s life a little easier. I am not ashamed to admit it (although it might sound extravagant actually it is worth every penny) after I have washed all the spare bedding I drop it off to have it ironed. When I get the pressed sheets back I fold into one of the pillowcases the corresponding sheet, duvet cover and remaining pillowcases of the set so everything is kept together and can be stored ready for the next guest bed making. This saves hours of unfolding and refolding, looking for that missing item of bedding. Storing bulky things that are seldom used is such a waste of space. If you use a fold out sofa bed when you fold it back up do so with the duvet concertinaed inside. When you next flip it open all you have to do is bang a bit of life back into the rather sad, flattened feather article. I have also discovered that pillows can be squeezed into decent sized cushion covers, meaning you can make daily use of them on your sofa without hogging valuable cupboard space in between visits. If you received a batch of smellies for Christmas, resist temptation and pack them away for later use. Whilst guests in your home are not expecting a five-star hotel experience no one

wants to be faced with a cracked bar of soap and the dried up dregs of a shampoo bottle. Pop a few essentials in a drawer or hamper so you can refresh your toiletries without any future frantic running around. Put a couple of spare loo rolls in the welcome pack too, believe me come that tipsy afternoon BBQ in the summer or that rainy night next December when you are making up the guest room or bathroom you will be glad you did. As you switch of the TV, put your glass down on the coffee table in front of you and muster all your energy to get you off the sofa and off to bed, don’t put a cork in the remaining red wine (it is the beginning of January after-all so you will probably never finish it) pour into into an ice cube mould and put it in the freezer. Next time you are cooking and your recipe requires a few tablespoons of wine, voila.

Food & Drink Leek & Garlic Soup

Happy New Year!

f I could urge you all to stick to one resolution in 2016 it would be to shop seasonally, getting the best produce at the best prices, and in turn supporting British food producers. Despite much greater awareness of environmental issues in recent years less than 50% of the fruit and vegetables we buy are home grown. Unless you're after pineapples and mangos by shopping seasonally you should, generally find yourself buying British produce. As with previous years I hope that I can help to ward off any January doom and gloom by encouraging you to embrace these cold dark nights, and enjoying some good ‘soul warming’ food! This is certainly the theme for our January East Dulwich Supper Club, which we have named the “January Blues Basher” for good reason. Our starter of Leek & Garlic Soup with Prosciutto and Brick House Bakery Sour Dough Breads is included below. Trust me when I say this is a really spectacular soup. Roast garlic is absolutely amazing; so sweet and smooth. Roasting gives it a rounded flavour, wonderfully tasty and in no way pungent so don’t be afraid to go with two whole bulbs.

Serves 4. Less than 30 minutes preparation time 30 minutes to 1 hour cooking time Ingredients • 2 leeks • 2 whole garlic bulbs • 1L chicken stock (do make your own if at all possible – substitute for vegetable stock if necessary) • 650g potatoes – Vivaldis are my favourites (around 4 medium sized) • 1 tablespoon butter • Olive Oil • Salt • Cream or Crème Fraiche Method: 1) Pre-heat the oven to 2000C. Remove the ‘tops’ of the bulbs of garlic with a horizontal slice so that the cloves inside are exposed. Drizle with olive oil, wrap in aluminium foil and place in the oven for 30 minutes. Remove. Allow to cool and, with a firm hold of the base of the bulb, squeeze the soft, caramelised garlic into a small bowl. If you want to use prosciutto as a garnish, place the slices on a tray and bake for 10 minutes. 2) Remove the tops, or the darkest green leaves from the leeks. Slice the stalks in half and wash well (because leeks have many layers there may be plenty of dirt and soil in there). Finely chop into small pieces. 3) Peel potatoes and roughly chop into 2cm cubes. 4) Heat butter and a drizzle of olive oil in a large pot. Add chopped leeks and stir until softened, around 10 minutes. Add the litre of stock, the cubed potatoes, the soft garlic and a teaspoon of salt. Combine, bring to the boil then reduce heat to medium. Cover and allow to simmer for 30 minutes or until the vegetables have softened significantly. 5) In batches, pour the soup into a blender and process until smooth. Alternatively use a stick blender straight in the pot. Return to the pot on a low heat and add cream. 6) Spoon ladleful’s of soup into a bowl. Or it could be your teenage children who need to be contained at the end of the garden…you know, away from the house but still within boundaries? Whatever the reason, there are a few points to consider before embarking on “project garden room”.

What do you want it for? If you are going to use it as an office, art studio, playroom, gym, music room, to be used all year round, you’ll need heating, insulation and electricity. I would recommend then to avoid the cheap option and go for a proper garden studio which start at 15K and go up to 40K or more for bespoke, high end buildings.. If it’s a shed to potter around, informal play room, or a summer building you’re after then a customized sturdy shed (starting price £500/£600) will do the trick.

Impact on the garden The smaller the garden, the nicer the shed needs to be, as you’ll look directly onto it. It won’t feel rural, but a stylish courtyard in between house and shed, with a small tree in the middle, say, can look striking. Thoughtful placing is key to enhancing your space. A long thin garden can look broader with a shed spanning the back, while an L-shaped structure or putting the shed to the side creates depth. A monopitch roof with lower eaves at the front also makes the shed look further away. It’s also a good time to rethink the space around the shed, perhaps adding a pergola or deck for evening sun, or some garden lighting. A path, whether straight or serpentine, can create a nice visual connection between shed and house. Also think about orientation, balancing where the shed’s shadows will be cast. In any case your shed should blend with the landscape and be integrated within the planting and the whole garden, and not look like it landed from space. Consider the materials used for the shed carefully. Cedar cladding is stunning and weathers beautifully. A green roof will also help. If your shed is made with treated softwood which will therefore come in a rather unattractive brown, bright orange or green, paint it black! Black provides 16 | SE21 - January 2016

a great backdrop for planting and works in both contemporary or more traditional settings. Doors and windows help break up the façade, but too much symmetry can look a bit like a Wendy house. Finally the right planting will be key to frame, screen and soften the façade.

Council & Dulwich Estate planning permission In broad terms, outbuildings are considered permitted development and do not require a planning permission as long as you meet the conditions and limits. These are very clearly stated on the Southwark Council website, on this link: www.planningportal.gov.uk/permission/ commonprojects/outbuildings/miniguide However if your property belongs to the Dulwich Estate, even if the Council doesn’t require you applying for a planning permission, you must apply for permission to the estate Scheme of management. The application takes a minimum of 6 weeks and you will have to provide a sketch with measurements, levels, an elevation and materials proposed. In my experience as long as you put a reasonable proposal forward and show that you have carefully considered the impact on your neighbours and the planting surrounding the garden room, the permission will be granted. Five Compelling Reasons Why You Should Be Juicing Every Day

ver since I did a DNA test to understand what my dietary requirements are for crucial vitamins and other healthrelated factors, I’ve been starting the day with a vegetable and fruit smoothie. The test results told me what my requirements are for cruciferous vegetables, omega 3, vitamin B6 and anti-oxidants, and I now ensure I get a good proportion of my daily needs in a morning smoothie. It’s quick and easy to do, and a great way to start the day. Here are five reasons why I think you should be doing the same.

Increase Your Cruciferous Vegetables Examples of cruciferous vegetables include Brussel sprouts, broccoli, cabbage and kale, and (with the possible exception of the Brussel sprout), these can all be added to a smoothie. Cruciferous vegetables contain very high amounts of vitamin A carotenoid, vitamin C, folic acid, and fibre, and are also a good source of vitamin K. I use kale as a base for my smoothies, occasionally mixing it up with spinach for an extra boost.

Increase Your Omega 3 Omega 3 is a fatty acid that is essential to good health. Its benefits can boost positive mental health, and reduce the risk of cancer, cognitive aging, cardiovascular problems and inflammation. One of the best sources of omega 3 is oily fish (salmon, mackerel, sardines and to a lesser degree, tuna), but it can also be found in flaxseeds and chia seeds. You can add these seeds to a morning smoothie and they add texture as well as nutritional value.

Boost Your Vitamin B6 The richest sources of vitamin B6 are pork, turkey, beef, chickpeas, potatoes and bananas. Now obviously there’s only one of those foods that you’d want to add to a smoothie – the banana. The banana lends a slightly sweeter taste to the smoothie, and 26 | SE21 - January 2016

apart from B6, is also a great source of magnesium, potassium and fibre.

Ramp Up Your Antioxidants Blackberries, blueberries, strawberries, raspberries and cranberries are all excellent sources of antioxidants, and can all be added to a smoothie. I still buy them even when they are out of season for the goodness and taste that they bring. Any fruit or vegetable rich in vitamins A, C or E is a good addition –spinach contains lots of vitamin A and E, and oranges are a good source of vitamin C.

Just Add Almond Milk I use almond milk as a liquid for my smoothies. This is a good source of calcium and protein (although not as good as cow’s milk), but ideal if your lactose intolerant (as I found out in the DNA test). It also contains good omega 3 fatty acids. The St Christopher’s Hospice Shop further up the Lane is fantastic for large furniture, perfect projects for the urban upcycler. 2) Traid on Rye Lane, SE15, is more than worth a trip just to wonder at the spectacular windows, high fashion styling meets 20th century club kids’ couture. 3) Maria Silva, Area Manager of ALD Life which has 5 local shops, says style savvy South Londoners are snapping up old LPS and framing the covers as artwork. 4) Drop off clothes at The British Red Cross Shop on London Road, SE23, and the money raised will help the charity’s work with refugees amongst other causes.

5) Lisa Flanagan, Manager of The Sue Ryder Shop on London Road, SE23, and Carly Stevens have a reputation for fabulous vintage finds like these rare retro radios. 6) Mind Shop on Grove Vale, SE22, has an interesting selection of travel books. Buy a book at random and then decide whether to go or not. 7) Enterprising Gokcen Erdin, Manager of the Oxfam Shop on Half Moon Lane, SE24, is establishing the shop as a destination for rare vinyl. 8) Almost opposite Gavin Monaghan, Manager of the Oxfam Book Shop, has created the perfect oasis in which to while away a few weekend hours. 9) Marta Gross de Bethencourt, Manager of Mary’s Living & Giving Shop on Lordship Lane SE22, prides herself on the store’s selection of fashionable women’s wear. 10) Gemma Juma, Director of Link Age Southwark, says if it is time that you have then you could consider spending some providing volunteer support for some of the area’s older people.

The Beginning Of The End: The Annual Tax Return

s we begin our journey through January 2016, it may well be the end of the beginning or indeed the beginning of the end, for the tax return. In truth who really cares? However, the thousands of tax payers who have yet to file their selfassessment tax return should have a view. There is less than 30 filing days left until the dreaded 31st January deadline. However, 31st January is often misrepresented as solely being the deadline for online filing of tax returns. Whereas in truth the date has three features: 1) The filing deadline for personal tax returns. 2) The deadline for the payment of any outstanding income tax and national insurance for the tax year that ended on the previous 5th April; and 3) The deadline for making the first payment on account of income tax and national insurance for the current year. This will only be applicable if a taxpayer had a self-assessment liability greater than £1,000 in the previous tax year. Taxpayers who miss the 31st January 2016 deadline will be subject to a fixed £100 penalty. This will also apply even if the taxpayer had no income tax liability. In addition to the late filing penalty, the following penalties apply to late submission of tax returns: • From 3 months late: taxpayers will be charged an automatic daily penalty of £10 per day up to a £900 maximum. • From 6 months late: taxpayers will be charged additional penalties which are the greater of 5% of tax due or £300. • Over 12 months late: there are additional penalties based on the greater of 5% of tax due or £300. In serious cases this penalty may be increased up to 100% of tax due. Where the income tax and national insurance are paid late the following penalties will be triggered: • 30 days late: 5% of tax due

• 6 months late: 5% of tax outstanding at that date • 12 months late 5% of the tax outstanding at that date These HMRC penalties for late submission and late payment is designed to lift the submission of tax returns from its current position of 92% achieved on 31st January 2015. Furthermore, tax payers may consider submitting their tax returns before the peak experienced on the last two days. Last year, 979,256 tax returns were filed on 30th and 31st January. Self-assessment filing of tax returns is 20 years old in the UK, yet the annual nagging of tax payers to submit their tax return on time continues. The evidence does not appear encouraging or positive for the Chancellor’s proposals to have every self-assessment taxpayers submit quarterly tax returns by 2020. Such a goal may be more idealistic than realistic. Quarterly tax returns are the flagship of the Chancellor’s digital tax revolution, which saw HMRC publish ‘Making Tax Digital’ on 14th December 2015. Perhaps it may not be the beginning of the end for the tax return. Taxpayers reluctant to comply with the current single annual tax return can now look forward to the quarterly tax return. The tinted glasses worn by our Chancellor may allow him to echo that being an online system should not present taxpayers with any additional burden. That may well be a truth but will it motivate taxpayers to engage with the tax system? If the Chancellor is correct then this could well signal the beginning of the end of apathy for tax return submissions. For our Chancellor, time will tell. In the case of taxpayers yet to submit their 2014-15 tax return, time may well tell as we skip through to 31st January.

The Last Word – Sarah Pylas

arah Pylas is a local writer and blogger, who has been sharing stories about Greek/ English family life on her blog, Grenglish, since 2011. Since then she has written for The Huffington Post, various online parenting websites, SE22 magazine (see page 10) and is resident content writer on Around Dulwich! Sarah has just published a book of Greek meze, soups and dip recipes with her sister-in-law ‘Secrets from Yiayia’s Greek Kitchen’.

How long have you lived in the area? 7-years ago I moved into my boyfriend’s (now husband!) flat on Barry Road, then we moved to Thompson Road, which is possibly the shortest street in ED, when I was pregnant with my son. We moved up the hill a bit towards Honor Oak almost 4-years ago.

What brought you here? Love.

Do you belong to any groups? I belong to the East Dulwich WI, which has brought so many brilliant women and opportunities into my life.

The best meal I’ve ever had… I had an amazing meal at Pedler on Peckham Rye recently. It’s a great place to go with friends – yummy food, buzzy atmosphere and lovely staff! I also visited the newly refurbished Dulwich Woodhouse before Christmas and enjoyed a superb Sunday lunch with the family! Highly recommend going.

Where is your favourite place to eat? Si Mangia on Forest Hill Road is a family favourite. They make fresh gluten-free pasta to order, so it means I can tuck in with everyone else instead of picking at a salad.

Your favourite place to go for a drink? I love to share a litre of Muscadet from the tanks at Toasted, but the rioja at The Palmerston is my absolute favourite.

Where’s your favourite place to walk? One Tree Hill. The views are incredible.

When I want to relax... I love to unwind with a bit of trash telly, red wine and a take-away. 32 | SE21 - January 2016

What is your favourite shop? Ooooh, I have two! Through the Trees on Zenoria Road and The Dulwich Trader in West Dulwich are both fab.

And the last thing you bought there? I bought birthday gifts for my sister, my mum, both of my sister-in-laws and my mother-in-law all from The Dulwich Trader! Through the Trees is somewhere I go when I want to treat myself although it is dangerous, as I always want everything! Nick has a great eye.

Best bargain you’ve ever landed… My house! There is no way we could afford to buy it now. House prices in the area are insane now.

My secret ambition… It’s no secret, but to successfully launch the Greek range of dips from our book and see them on shelves in all good supermarkets would be the dream!
