December was a fantastic month with so much on locally including the wonderful Light Display at the Dulwich Picture Gallery. The Dulwich Charity lunch which took place at The Palmerston, SE22 in early December, raised a fabulous amount for our local charity Link Age Southwark. Find out how much we raised on p31. LOVE West Dulwich Lamp-post Banner Competition is Now Live!

ove West Dulwich, in partnership with the Dulwich Festival, are inviting entries from artists of all ages and experience who have a connection with West Dulwich to submit artwork celebrating the spirit of the area. The winners will be judged by a panel including Helen Hayes MP and representatives from Dulwich Picture Gallery and Dulwich Outdoor Gallery. Approximately 50 two metre banners featuring the winning artworks will be installed on lamp-posts throughout West Dulwich in May 2017.Funded by a grant from the London Borough of Southwark, the project has the backing of Southwark and Lambeth councilors, the Dulwich Estate, the Dulwich Society, Dulwich Festival and local schools, residents and businesses. Love West Dulwich is an alliance of West Dulwich businesses and residents working together

for the benefit of this special area. The aim of the lamp-post competition is to help create a clear, cohesive sense of visual identity for West Dulwich, celebrating the spirit of its local community and culture. This is a brilliant opportunity for anyone with a connection to West Dulwich to get their work seen in public in various locations around the area. Healthy, Speedy Suppers

anuary may be the month when we would all like to cocoon ourselves away and drink cocoa under cashmere blankets - but life must go on. Like it or not we will have to cater the occasional event. Coming after a month when at every gathering everything that touches our lips seemed to come in rich buttery pastry (with which there is nothing wrong at all) a clean, quick buffet full of fresh ingredients makes a refreshing change. Here is our tried and tested menu of four dishes for a casual evening with friends. Mozzarella & Chargrilled Courgette – this dish takes the longest so we would suggest starting this whilst getting on with the others. The key to this to make sure the courgettes do not turn to mush or blacken too much, you want them sweetly caramelised in their own juices. The best solution – although it is slow – is a health grill using no oil. Cut courgettes in half, making sure you grill ones of the same thickness at the same time and top and tail so they fit. Get on with the other preparation whilst regularly checking and placing cooked courgettes to one side. Once you have a grilled sufficiency, and they have been allowed to cool, cut into bit size pieces, lay on a plate and cover with an equal amount of cut mozzarella. Dress with balsamic vinegar and olive oil. Le Puy Lentil, Beetroot, Pomegranate and Feta Salad – a simple and delicious dish. Simply cover your serving platter with a thickish layer of Le Puy lentils, layer on cubed, bit size pieces of cooked, chilled beetroot. Top with diced

feta cheese and lots of pomegranate seeds and sprinkle with finely chopped parsley and mint. I drizzle this with a little honey and some pomegranate molasses that you can get from any store that sells southern Mediterranean produce. To cook Le Puy lentils, rinse them thoroughly in a sieve, place in a saucepan covered with water, bring to the boil and simmer gently for about 25 minutes. Drain and allow to cool before assembling this dish. Smoked Mackerel with Quinoa, Orange and Kale – possibly the quickest party dish ever. Simply layer quinoa on a platter, use a mixture of red and white. Take filets of peppered smoked mackerel, remove the silvery skin from the underside and flake over the grains. Take one or two seedless oranges – depending on the size of the dish you are making – and peel them. I do this over the plate so any juice of saved. Remove any pith and break into bite size pieces. Take a hand full of shredded kale and sprinkle over your dish. Dress with the juice of another orange. Grilled Halloumi with Rhubarb and Chili – grill halloumi until golden brown, stew rhubarb with a little brown sugar or honey, drain, removing excess liquid. Stir in dried chili and allow to cool. Allow guests to spoon onto cheese slices. Happy and healthy New Year!

Happy New Year! I know this can be the season of dark nights, empty pockets and the dreaded post Christmas diet, but don’t despair. Spring is only around the corner, and in the meantime I have a lovely receipe for roast carrot humous which I just had to share! This is a great snack or starter, served with crudités or warm flatbreads, or spooned into toasted pittas with salad and/or some shredded cold meat. Whenever I do a roast I allow for extra carrots so I can make this, but you can use whatever leftover roast roots are around, and if you have some roast onions or garlic, chuck those in too. Enjoy it alone, or get some frineds round to share – good food, good company & laughter are the best antidote I know to the January blues! Roast Carrot Hummous Serves 2-4 Ingredients • 400g tin chickpeas, drained and rinsed • 100–300g roast carrots (but can mix in other roast roots, such as parsnips, celeriac and perhaps some roast onion • Juice of 1 small lemon • 2 tablespoons tahini or thick natural wholemilk yoghurt • 2 tablespoons olive or rapeseed oil, plus extra to finish • 1–2 garlic cloves, finely chopped • ∞ teaspoon cumin seeds, bashed, or a good pinch of ground cumin, plus extra to finish (optional) • Good pinch of dried chilli flakes, plus extra to finish (optional) • Salt and freshly ground black pepper

2) Season to taste with salt and pepper. To serve, spoon the hummus into a bowl or onto a plate, sprinkle with a good pinch of crushed cumin seeds and chilli flakes, if you like, and trickle on some olive or rapeseed oil. 3) Sealed in a container, this hummus keeps well in the fridge for up to a week.

Tips and swaps You can use leftover home-cooked chickpeas here if you like: 250g cooked peas is roughly equivalent to what you get in a 400g tin. If you don’t have any chickpeas, cannellini or butter beans work well too

Garden Talk

Take Cover! Great for banishing bare winter soil, marking out the front of a border and creating a lovely carpet under trees when planted in large drifts, ground cover plants are an important part of any garden. Here’s my top 10 evergreen varieties that are best for:

Shade 1) Asarum europaeum. With glossy green heart shaped leaves this easy going spreading plant makes a neat edging to a border, or is useful for mass underplanting in the shade. Simple and stylish. 2) Pachysandra terminalis. This is another lushlooking spreading evergreen ground cover that forms a dense mat of glossy green leaves. Tiny white flowers are a bonus in early summer. 3) Polystichum setiferum ‘Congestum’ is an evergreen dwarf fern with dense overlapping feathery fronds, useful for underplanting in a cool, but moist shady spot. Polypodium vulgare ‘Bifidomultifidum’ is another low growing fern that can handle sun so great if you’ve run out of shady spots. 4) Helleborus x hybridus Harvington lime. With bold dark green leaves and pretty white flowers from February to April this brightens up the garden in winter and makes a perfect ground cover for areas of dappled shade. 5) Pulmonaria ‘Blue Ensign’. I’ve come round to pulmonaria and particularly this variety with bright blue flowers in March to May and, unlike many, unspotted leaves. Great planted somewhere in partial shade, where the flowers can be clearly seen. It looks pretty with pale yellow primroses. 6) Brunnera macrophylla ‘Jack Frost’. With striking frosted leaves and dark green veins this useful plant lights up shady areas under trees or near pathways where you can see the sprays of forget-me-not-like blue flowers in Spring.

Sun 7) Stachys Byzantina. This velvety silver-leaved sunlover is great for softening the edge of a border and giving a bit of interest to a winter garden. It has spires of purple flowers in summer. 8) Thymus ‘Silver Posie’. A bushy creeping thyme with variegated grey green leaves, it’s lovely for

edging paths and growing up between stepping tones. The herby leaves will liven up your food too! Bees love the tiny white/purple flowers in spring and early summer, but cut back after flowering to keep the plant compact.

Sun or shade 9) Vinca minor. Evergreen with pretty pale blue flowers, from spring to autumn, this is a common but useful ground cover plant for sprawling down slopes. This variety is less invasive than Vinca major but cut back long shoots in spring. Happy in sun or partial shade. Hedera helix ‘Glacier’ a pretty variegated ivy that gives a similar effect, sprawling across bare soil, or down slopes. 10) Carex oshimensis Evergold. A golden yellow low growing grass which makes a striking edge to borders and is stunning in winter against red stems of cornus or underplanting dark green or purple leaved shrubs. For a bit more drama try Ophiopogon planiscapus ‘Nigrescens’, a low growing dark purple grass-like perennial that creates bold edge to borders when planted in a drift. Looks good with other grasses and contrasts well with silvery plants. Happy in full sun or partial shade. Happy new year folks! May 2017 be a lush and fruitful one! Barbara x

Friday 27 January: Jackie Oates, Solasta, Mitchell & Vincent – The Ivy House Jackie Oates is a singer and fiddle player whose unique treatment of English ballads and songs, and pure, haunting singing style has established her at the forefront of the new English folk revival. Solasta are an outstanding new folk ensemble. Their dynamic interpretations of Celtic based material are rooted firmly in tradition, whilst incorporating elements from diverse musical worlds including classical, jazz and early music. Mitchell & Vincent are an acoustic duo from Dorset and Somerset. They play mainly tunes (on fiddle and guitar) based on British folk music, mixed in with a few broadly traditional songs. Legacy: Photographs by Vanessa Bell and Patti Smith 8 February – 4 June 2017 thinking artists and thinkers. Charleston, Bell’s farmhouse on the Sussex Downs, where she lived with her life companion Duncan Grant, and the neighboring Monk’s House, home of Virginia and Leonard Woolf, both became sites of pilgrimage for Smith. The display will include a selection of Smith’s black and white photographs, the product of her residency at Charleston in 2003, which capture the lingering remnants of Bell’s life and chart Smith’s ongoing artistic response to the Bloomsbury group. Commenting on Charleston, Smith said: “Art was a part of everyday living. Their cups and saucers were designed by themselves, their utensils, the wallpaper, tapestries. When I first came here I found it just like home […] I felt a real longing to document this place in the same manner that I document my own home because it is very much how I live: books everywhere, things that seem

Dulwich Picture Gallery will present the first photography display bringing together work by the British modern artist, Vanessa Bell and the American musician, writer and artist, Patti Smith. ‘Legacy: Photographs by Vanessa Bell and Patti Smith’, which coincides with the Gallery’s major retrospective of Vanessa Bell’s work, will include 17 photographs by Smith and a selection of Bell’s photo albums, displayed publicly for the first time. It couples two artists both known for their pioneering creative drive and defiance of social mores, showcasing two different but compatible artistic visions. Smith has long been drawn to the work and lives of the Bloomsbury Group, finding inspiration and solace in the rural retreats of these forward 24 | SE21 - January 2017

very humble, very sacred, a simple wooden box, a shell, a paint tube – everything has significance.” On display with Smith’s photographs will be seven of Bell’s photograph albums, generously loaned from the Tate Archives, that were carefully compiled by Bell during her lifetime. Bell took pictures from her earliest days - some of the photographs date from her youth at St Ives, where her family spent their summers. Others depict her own young family, her husband Clive Bell and lover Duncan Grant, and the circle of leading intellectuals and artists that surrounded them. The selection also offers an insight into Bell’s working process, illuminating how she used the camera to inform her paintings and providing an intimate glimpse of the Bloomsbury members behind closed doors. “In our display, these photographs and their makers will be able to speak to each other across the years” says curator Sarah Milroy. “Bell and Smith are both free spirits that challenged the times they lived in, and epitomised the ideal of creative freedom. We look forward to their conversation.”

Why is vitamin D important? An overview on the ‘sunshine vitamin’ and how to ensure you’re getting enough What is vitamin D? Firstly, for clarity, I’m talking specifically about vitamin D3 - the ‘sunshine vitamin’, a fat soluble vitamin, which needs to be consumed with fats in order to be absorbed. The body actually converts the vitamin into a hormone.

How is it consumed or activated? Vitamin D3 can be consumed in one of three ways: in supplement form; consumed in foods, although it’s almost impossible to consume enough D3 in foods; synthesised by the sun’s rays. We recommend supplementing in the winter months, and then getting what you need from sunlight in the summer months.

Why is it important? Vitamin D3 helps to promote calcium absorption in the gut, and is vital for both bone growth and remodelling. It also helps to prevent osteoporosis when used alongside calcium. Vitamin D3 helps with cell modulation and growth, and contributes to good neuromuscular and immune system functioning.

of vitamin D3 has also be linked to cancer, asthma, type II diabetes, high blood pressure, depression, Alzheimer’s Disease, Multiple Sclerosis, Crohns Disease and type I diabetes.

Who is at risk of low vitamin D3? Anyone who is indoors a lot, and rarely gets sunlight on their skin. You are more at risk if you’re older, pregnant or obese. If your skin is black, you are also more at risk because pigmentation in your skin prevents the sunlight from getting through as effectively.

How do I know how much I need to supplement? There are now DNA tests which amongst other things will tell you what your requirement is for vitamin D3. I spend a lot of time outdoors all year round, yet even after summer my levels were only adequate. I take a supplement (I use Cytoplan), and as my DNA results tell me I have a raised requirement for D3, I take 5000 IUs per day in winter and 2500 in summer. Don’t follow my example though without checking your own levels first.

How do I know if I’m getting enough? There are several ways to take a Vitamin D3 test: • Request a test from your GP • Order a home kit (a simple finger-prick blood test, and results take about a week)

What are the symptoms of vitamin D3 deficiency? Rickets used to be a common condition amongst children (called osteomalacia in adults), but there were less than 700 reported cases from 2013-14 so it’s very rare. However, signs that you might be deficient include unexplained fatigue, aches and pains in your bones and frequent infections. A lack 26 | SE21 - January 2017

New Horizons for baby boomers

t is not unusual to begin the new year with some grandiose plan for the next 365 days. However, as a member of that illustrious club “Baby Boomer” the word retirement is frequently being dropped into conversation. Baby Boomer’s club, those born between 1946 and 1964 may rejoice as we enter 2017 without the dread of retirement and a state of inactivity. Last year 89-year-old Joe Bartley, a non SE21/SE22 resident advertised he was seeking employment due to boredom of retirement. Baby boomers with aspirations beyond working in a Devon café, there is still hope. Surprisingly, we can extract an example from Hollywood. Robert De Niro, who starred in the 2015 film, The Intern, highlighted the benefits a baby boomer intern can add to a business. Furthermore, a recent report, On the State of the Public's Health, Baby Boomers: Fit for the Future stated, “The adults in this generation are rich in experience. They have lived through tremendous change. They have also lived through enormous technological advances.” Three baby boomers shared their exciting new horizons that is open to others in 2017: Business Start-up; Voluntary work; Return to education. Research has shown that almost 1:5 baby boomers are increasingly exchanging their retirement to launch their own businesses. Reasons given for this resurgence include an opportunity to realise their dream; doing something they enjoy whilst good health prevails and maintenance of mental agility. Launching a new business venture requires careful thought planning and in most cases financial consideration. It is an activity that carries a serious health warning. This should not be undertaken by the exhausted or work worn baby boomer. Moreover, before embarking along this road, careful planning and professional advice is advisable. The potential financial rewards from a business venture will have a material impact upon the income tax position and income tax payable of a baby boomer. Daphne Gold, a former nurse said, “managing my three let properties is a helpful distraction from my grandma duties and volunteer life. I’m busier

now than when employed in the NHS. I have an accountant to help me take care of all the financial and tax stuff” Voluntary work is a popular channel for baby boomers with their new time freedom. Many local/ community organisations and charities would welcome their wealth of expertise and experience. The financial implications of volunteering are negligible as most positions only remunerate out of pocket expenses. However, professional advice should always be sought. Volunteer positions on some professional bodies and government boards offer a daily or annual remuneration package. These positions will invariably have income tax implications. Meredith Baker a former Enterprise Centre Manager, has for the last five years developed a portfolio career. He combines his part-time job with life as a Magistrate plus sitting on at three boards/panels at periodic intervals with different remuneration packages. With a regular occupational pension and a part-time salary Meredith enjoys his new freedom. He is also well versed in the requirements of Self-Assessment. Finally, some baby boomers, like Gillian Delphy, return to the classroom. This can be for leisure, enjoyment or academic challenge. Gillian returned to university full-time to pursue a degree in Theology. University education can often cost a minimum of £9,000pa excluding books and living costs. Gillian funded her studies with a student loan plus her savings. The University of the Third Age (U3A) provides an opportunity for baby boomers to return to the classroom in a less stressful manner and less costly manner. U3A allows retired and semi-retired persons to undertake learning not for the academic outcome but for the joy of learning and exploration, in local areas. The U3A structure and courses provide an opportunity for the sharing of skills and life experiences. Course fees rarely exceed £100. The Dulwich Charity lunch raised a fabulous £2,500 for Link Age Southwark. The lunch, now in its 15th year, is held every December and is a fantastic way for local business men and women to meet up and get in to the festive spirit. This year the lunch was held at The Palmerston, who kindly closed the pub for the event. Over 64 local business men and women got together and had a great Christmas party.The organisers enjoyed great support from local businesses who donated prizes for the raffle and came along and enjoyed the day.
