Welcome
I absolutely love this time of year. Christmas (which I love!) is over and we have a wonderful New Year to look forward too. December was a fantastic month with so much on locally including the wonderful Christmas events in and around Dulwich. The Dulwich Charity lunch which took place at The Palmerston in early December, raised a fabulous amount for our local charity Link Age Southwark. Find out how much we raised on p36 & 37. There are plenty of events on this month too, so make sure you take a good look through the news pages, starting on page 8. This month we have two new columists writing for SE21. Becca Teers talks about a New year, new you on page 12 and Pan Pylas has written his Annual Review on page 40 &41. All our usual columns are here: Food & Drink, p14; Garden Talk, p16; Pets Corner,p22; Dulwich Hamlet Football Club update, p26; the Horniman Museum, p28 & 29; Education News, p30; Financial Matters, p32; Dulwich Picture Gallery, p34 and Fitness Tips on page 38.

The Dulwich Charity Lunch This year the Dulwich Charity lunch raised a fabulous £1,929 for Link Age Southwark The lunch, now in its 16th year, is held every December and is a fantastic way for local business men and women to meet up and get in to the festive spirit. This year the lunch was held at The Palmerston, who kindly closed the pub for the event. Over 58 local business men and women got together and had a great Christmas party. The organisers enjoyed great support from local businesses who donated prizes for the raffle and came along and enjoyed the day.
Until next time.

New Year - New You? How To Keep Up With Your New Year Resolutions Past The Month Of January!!
I
t’s a familiar pattern isn’t it? We start the New Year with the best of intentions and all sorts of plans, ideas and goals, most of which fall by the wayside before we even get to Valentine’s Day! Here are some tips to help you keep your levels of motivation high and your goals more achievable; 1) Don’t be too ambitious! David Allen said; “You can do anything, but not everything”. If you have a whole list of resolutions or goals, take three of them at a time and work on them first. Breaking your list down will stop you from becoming overwhelmed. 2) Write your goals down. Researchers from Harvard Business School found that writing goals down was one of the key actions of successful people. A written intention represents a commitment on your part to achieve the goal, and this gives you more power and determination. 3) Strive for balance. Try to have a mix of resolutions or new things you want to implement. Often it can be all about work or health, but it’s better and more interesting to have a healthy mix of things you want to improve or change. Think about these areas of your life; career, health, relationships, hobbies, personal development, finance and ways you can give back to your local community or maybe humanitarian acts you want to start. 4) Focus on the ‘why’. Think about why you want to do whatever you’ve decided to do. What will be the benefits and how will your life be better if you put these new actions and behaviours into practice? Knowing and reminding yourself of the why often, will keep you going when you may be tempted to give up. 5) Make a proper plan. Use your diary or calendar and actually spend some time scheduling into your days/weeks, the actions that you will
12 | SE21 - January 2019
need to take to stay on track. Once you have diarized what you will need to do, you will feel more organized and confident that you actually can achieve what you want! 6) Pre-empt any possible obstacles to you making the changes you will need to make. Decide in advance how you will deal with each obstacle, as or if it arises. That way you are prepared. 7) Reward yourself when you make progress. Measure and record your progress and decide what reward you will give yourself at every stage. Little treats along the way keep you feeling motivated and not ‘hard done by’! 8) Finally - don’t beat yourself up if you fall off track once or twice. Just remind yourself of how well you’ve done so far, focus on the whys again and get right back to your plan. Food & Drink with Suzanne James
Barley & Lentil Soup Happy New Year! It is, inevitably the season of fitness videos and diets, but I am here to tell you that there is another way. Most of us tend to go a little bit crazy in December, we eat lots of rich food, sit around more, and probably drink quite a bit of alcohol too (guilty)! So, setting a new regime for the new year is absolutely the right thing to do, but rather than go on the latest fad diet think of it as improving your lifestyle! First of all, make sure that the amount of food you eat is correct based on how active you are, and secondly eat a good range of foods to ensure you are getting a balanced diet including plenty of fruit, vegetables, starchy foods such as whole meal bread and wholegrain cereals, protein rich foods like meat, fish, eggs and lentils, and finally some dairy foods too. This can all seem a bit daunting, but if you feel you need help there are lots of nutritionists around and it can be well worth making an appointment with them to get you off to a flying start. The Food Standards Agency also have a brilliant on-line booklet called EatWell that is a good starting point. Here is a good Winter Warmer recipe, that only takes 20 minutes to prepare and an hour to cook. Serves 4
Ingredients • 2 tablespoons Filippo Berio EV Olive Oil • 6 spring onions – chopped, white & green parts separated • 4 cloves garlic, chopped • 1 tablespoon finely chopped ginger • 1 large carrot, peeled and chopped • 2 sticks of celery, chopped • 2 tablespoons tomato paste • 1 ∞ tablespoons curry powder • 1 13.5 ounce can of coconut milk (use a light version if you can find it) • 1 cup dried red lentils • 1 cup pearl barley • Kosher salt • 1 cup yoghurt • Handful chopped coriander
Method 1) Heat the oil in a large pot over a medium heat. Add the white parts of the spring onion, carrots, celery, garlic and ginger. Cook, stirring frequently until soft – 3-4 minutes. Add the tomato paste and curry powder. Cook stirring until the tomato paste darkens (1 to 2 minutes). 2) Add the coconut milk, lentils, barley, 4 cups of water and ∞teaspoon salt and bring to the boil. Reduce heat and simmer, stirring occasionally, until the lentils and barley are tender, 35 to 45 minutes (adding more water if needed to loosen). 3) Serve, topped with the spring onion greens, chopped coriander and yoghurt.
Tips & swaps You can use leftover chicken or turkey – simply add during step two, towards the end of the cooking time. Add tinned chick peas during step 2, after the lentils have been cooking for about 30 minutes. Serve with naan bread or whole meal bread. If you (or your children) don’t like chunky soups just blitz it in the blender.
In Season This Month Vegetables - Jerusalem Artichokes, Beetroot, Broccoli, Brussels Sprouts, Cabbage, Carrots, Cauliflower, Celeriac, Celery, Chicory, Garlic, Kale, Leeks, Mushrooms, Onions, Parsnips, Potatoes, Pumpkin, Red Cabbage, Shallots, Spinach, Swede, Turnips. Fruit & Nuts - Apples, Pears (late – Concorde, Doyenne du Comice, Conference and Winter Nellis), Rhubarb (forced), Walnuts Meat - Duck (end of season), Guinea Fowl, Hare, Partridge, Venison Fish & Seafood - Brill, Clams, Cockles, Haddock, Halibut, Hake, John Dory, Lemon Sole, Salmon (coming into season), Monkfish, Mussels, Oyster, Plaice, Turbot
Optional extras: • Frozen turkey leftovers can be defrosted and added • Add a tin of chick peas to bulk out 14 | SE21 - January 2019

Garden Talk with Janine Winlaw
A Winter Wonder
I
f there’s one plant guaranteed to lift your spirits on a wintery day, it’s the helebore. Flowering from December right through to spring, it come in a gorgeous range of subtle colours from whites and pale greens to dusky pinks and purples. There are also fancier varieties with double petals or stunning markings. The best way of choosing a plant you love is to buy it now while it’s in flower. For most impact, group at least three together in the front garden, by a path, or where you can see them from a window on a cold day. Most helebores like dappled shade so planting them under a deciduous tree such as a magnolia, is ideal – that way they’ll be shaded in summer. Then mingle snowdrops or cyclamen amongst them to really give your garden the winter wow factor.
Six Of The Best Helleborus niger Also known as the Christmas rose, this is a dainty white hellebore with yellow stamens and low growing leathery evergreen foliage. It’s great for containers and one of the earliest to flower (Jan to Feb). Likes partial shade. 30cm H.
lividus is similar but less hardy with wonderful marbled bluish green leaves and clusters of pinktinged apple green flowers (Jan – March). Ideal in a large container in a sheltered semi shady pot with well-drained soil 35cm H.
Helleborus ‘Anna’s Red’ This is a really popular hellebore with masses of large pinky red flowers on tall dark stems (Feb – April). It also has attractive marbled foliage and is happiest in partial shade 50cm H.
Helleborus argutifolius This larger more sculptural helebore is a fabulous foliage plant with handsome serrated evergreen leaves that’ll give your garden evergreen interest and structure all year round. The pale green clusters of flowers in pendants are in bloom from January to March. Looks great with pinkred flowers of Pulmonaria rubra. Likes full sun or partial shade. 50cm H.
Helleborus foetidus Another large architectural variety with masses of bell shaped pale green flowers with purple edges (Jan – April) above clumps of palm like dark green leaves. It likes partial shade. Tall at up to 80cm H.
Helleborus x hybridus (H. orientalis)
How To Grow
Flowering from Feb to April, this is a popular hellebore with large dark green leaves and a wonderful range of flowers from the deep pinky/ red ‘Havington Red’ to the striking ‘Yellow Lady’ with maroon speckling. The dark plum varieties such as ‘Single Dusky Grape’ (Ashwood Garden Hybrids) look great offset with snowdrops or bright blue Pulmonaria ‘Blue Ensign’. They like partial shade. 45cm H.
Helebores like moist, rich well drained soil in dappled shade – unless its one of the more sun tolerant varieties listed above. Try not to let them dry out as they’re establishing. If they need a boost give them a mulch and feed in spring with something like pelleted chicken manure. Prune off last year’s old foliage in January to show off the new buds and flowers as they grow and deadhead after flowering if you want to avoid them self-seeding.
Helleborus x sternii More sun tolerant than most, this is a striking hellebore as much for its marbled grey foliage as the pretty clusters of pink tinged green flowers (Feb – March). It’s happy in full sun or partial shade. ‘Silver Dollar’ is a stunning variety with steely silver serrated leaves – best in containers in a sunny sheltered position. 40cm. Pets Corner with Leonie St Clair
New Year New Puppy
I
t’s 2018 and many of you will be welcoming a new puppy into your life and looking for tips on the best way forward. First of all, don’t delay, book into a reputable training class as soon as you can. Positive training will help you bond with your pup, establishing clear communication and boundaries. With very young pups focus first on socialisation and housetraining and then separation training- but be sure you know what all these terms mean. The following are just the headlines for the new puppy owner. For the indepth information you’ll certainly need, get a good puppy primer. Gwen Bailey’s book The Perfect Puppy is excellent. Ensure you join a good class or have one to one sessions with a qualified trainer. Daily structure. Have a strict daily regime, with short bursts of play, training, feeding and lots of sleep. The habit of switching off and resting should be instilled early and resting pups should be left well alone. A crate or den, with a blanket thrown over to block light and noise, creates the right conditions for rest. Socialisation. This is all about carefully introducing your pup to ‘life’ and new things, teaching him to accept them without fear. It is not about letting your pup run wild with other dogs in the park, though learning about other dogs is vital. Novel experiences may range from people in sunglasses to children, traffic noise, and even household appliances. A good breeder will start the socialisation process in the nest, but this will be ongoing for the first few years of your new dog’s life. Read up about socialisation and seek advice. Go carefully, don’t overwhelm your pup with new things, give him time to process and adapt. Separation. Young pups have no concept of being alone, this is alien and scary for them. A puppy pen is a great way to start separation training. You’ll teach the pup he cannot shadow you all the time and that you always return even if you disappear for a few seconds. Slowly build
20 | SE21 - January 2019
up the time your pup is left alone in one part of the house before you venture outside the house. Ensure your pup is sleepy and ready to snooze before separation periods. Leave him with a nice chew or stuffed Kong. Housetraining. Let your pup out to toilet every two hours from early morning to last thing at night. At this age the undeveloped bladder and brain is still learning to ‘hold’. The more he goes outside, the more he’ll want to go outside. Clean any accidents with an enzymatic cleaner, so he does not mess in the same place again. Limit where he can go in the house, unless you are there to supervise. A puppy pen will help. Chewing. Ensure your pup has lots to chew, this helps with teething, calming and sleep. There are lots of good chews on the market and a decent local pet shop will advise. Pups with nothing to chew will chow down on the first thing to handincluding you and your kids! Playbiting. All pups go through a nippy phase. This is not aggression, it is how they play with each other in the litter, but needle-sharp puppy teeth hurt. Teach your pup early that teeth on human skin or clothing is forbidden- unless ever so gentle. The posh name for this process is bite inhibition. Make sure you learn about it. Any good training class or behaviourist will show you how. On lead exercise. New owners may overestimate how much exercise a pup needs and attempts to tire him with route marches fail, producing an overstimulated, hyper-stressed monster. 5 minutes on the lead, twice a day, for every month of life, is a good rule of thumb. Brain work and interactive play is better than endless free running. In the first few months view walking on lead as training and play as exercise.

Dulwich Hamlet FC - News
Top of the Isthmian Premier Division
A
t the time of writing the team continue to sit in top spot of the Isthmian Premier Division. But with only a matter of points separating themselves and Billericay Town (who also have several games in-hand) and both teams playing each other on 30 December, if Dulwich head into the New Year in the same league position it would have been a successful holiday period for the team on the field. The last few weeks have seen some very worrying times at Champion Hill with the owners of the land, Meadow Residential, making life extremely difficult for the Club. Threats to evict the Club from the ground and issuing of a back-dated rent invoice totaling over £120k have made the fight to keep the Club going much harder. This, after signs from Meadow that they wanted to work co-cooperatively and find a solution. Their actions do nothing to ward off people’s long-held suspicions that they were anything but the stereotypical speculative, property developer who were only in it for the money. The Supporters’ Trust and Football Committee continue to work hard to keep things going along with the many other volunteers who give up their time to help. None more so than the Club’s 12th man scheme which has now become the major source for paying the players and management. The Club needs all the support and financial help it can get if we are to continue to play at a level which matches our ambitions. If you’ve not been to a game before then there’s never been a better time to start with the Club sitting top of their league and playing some great football. We hope to see you soon! Since the issues off the field came to light we have been amazed by the response by supporters and the local community and we have seen in excess of 200 supporters and members of the local community joining the Trust, including local Southwalk Council Leading Peter John. The Trust hosted the clubs Xmas party in the club bar following the Brightlingsea Regent game on the 9 December. Music started at 18:30 and continued until late, we had an amazing buffet supplied by club sponsors Meat Liqour and Franco

Manca to whom we are very grateful. Many local businesses donated prizes for both the raffle and auction that took place that evening with all funds raised going towards the 12th Man scheme. We would also like to extend our thanks to all our fans, whether old or new, who have purchased merchandise. A percentage of the merchandise profit goes back to the Club so the more you buy, the more money the club receives. We can promise you that we will keep fighting for the club to a) be sustainable and b) move towards our stated objectives and aims. Finally, DHST board members would like to thank you all for your continued support and we wish you all a happy holiday.

Education News from Alleyn’s
Positive Nutrition for Life James Sharp, Head of Food and Nutrition at Alleyn’s School, talks about teaching young people the importance of healthy eating. Statistics from Public Health England state that nearly two thirds of adults and a third of 10 -11 year olds are overweight and we know that young people are becoming overweight earlier and staying overweight longer. The eating habits our children form now can last well into adult life and have profound and long term effects on their future health, so developing healthy attitudes to nutrition while they are young is fundamental to maintaining their emotional, physical and academic well-being.
Bring food prep to life Schools can teach how good food choices have a positive effect on physical and mental health but research shows that nutrition education is most effective when it includes hands-on food preparation, i.e. children who receive practical lessons, at home as well as school, eat more fruit and vegetables. Cooking skills help children make healthy choices at all stages in life, but clubs, trips, competitions and family meals also have a role to play in your child’s enjoyment of food and the social bonding it can provide.
Informed choices When they grow up our children will make their own choices about what to eat, and digital technology, home delivery services and the food industry can mean it is easy for them to become dependent on fast food. You can demonstrate the difference between fast foods and home-made food by making home-made equivalents of fast foods so that your child can taste how much sugar, salt and fat there is in the fast foods by comparison. Knowledge of good nutrition and being able to cook does not necessarily translate into healthy behaviour, but it does give young people an informed choice.
What you can do at home • Cook with your children from a young age and encourage them to create a book of their favourite recipes. 30 | SE21 - January 2019
• Keep fruit and vegetables out on the counter so children are more likely to snack on them. • Encourage awareness of how and where foods are grown, and when they are in season. • In the ‘tween-age’ years, help them develop a positive attitude to food by explaining the benefits of a good diet – healthier skin, hair, and more energy! • Explain how healthy eating can support physical well-being by developing a strong skeleton, helping to stabilise emotions and increasing energy levels for physical activity. • Make your teenager responsible for preparing one meal every week. They may need support doing it, but research shows they will make positive choices for their family and are more likely to go on to make healthier choices for themselves. • Above all, remember that cooking is a creative and social activity! Financial Matters with David Frederick
Self-assessment Is it happy 20th anniversary self-assessment tax return? This month marks the 20th anniversary of the now infamous annual mad rush to file tax returns by 31st January. The current personal tax reporting system that was launched way back in April 1996 has perhaps not taught taxpayers anything at all! Why? Taxpayers seem to have the same lacklustre and contempt for organising their affairs in January 2018 as January 1998. If there is indeed anyone responsible for this fashion or lack of urgency and learning from taxpayers, the main culprit must be HMRC themselves. Over the two decades, HMRC have used a variety of media campaigns to try and educate taxpayers. Some may recall, HMRC have even adopted a horror film scare approach with those glaring eyes coming out of their posters. However, each campaign has suffered the same deficiency, a focus on 31st January as the target date as opposed to the deadline. There is a psychologically subtle difference between the two. Secondly, unlike our US cousins UK taxpayers seem fearless of the paltry £100 first tier penalty for non-compliance. In 2018, £100 buys much less than 20 years ago, yet HMRC still tease taxpayers with this ineffective penalty. A penalty to which many errant taxpayers are only too pleased to take with a pinch of salt. If tested, it may be the case that many taxpayers devote more time planning their Saturday night out and holidays than their personal tax returns. However, it is interesting to learn that a growing number of professionals now use an airline and railway type tiered fee charging system for tax returns. As the date nears towards 31st January the higher the fee for the preparation of tax returns. It only seems logical that those who organise and plan their travel and tax affairs in advance should benefit from a lower fee. The plethora of excuses for annual last minute planning is almost comical and sadly 32 | SE21 - January 2019
would not be tolerated from school children. However, taxpayers feel they have a right to revert to a second childhood when dealing or not with their tax affairs. Despite our celebration of two decades of self-assessment, many taxpayers have failed to capitalise on any of the benefits from having their tax return done and dusted well before the January rush. The early completion and submission of the tax return allows taxpayers more time to plan for their payment of any income tax liability payable by 31st January. Wouldn’t it be less stressful to know well before mid-January the size of that January tax bill? Especially as the 31st January deadline arrives just after the festive celebrations and coincides with the January sales, when perhaps our funds are not at its peak. Just as a reminder, on 31st January, taxpayers are required to: (a) submit their tax return for the year ended the previous 5th April; (b) make a balancing payment for any tax outstanding for that previous year; and (c) make their first payment on account for the current tax year. A payment on account will only be payable if the taxpayer had a tax liability for the previous year greater than £1,000 after PAYE or other deductions at source. Moreover, there will not be any payment on account payable if, in the previous tax year, 80 per cent or more of a taxpayer’s tax was deducted at source. With HMRC proposing the birth of Making Tax Digital by the end of this decade, perhaps the January surge in tax returns, may become yesterday’s news. Time will tell. Alas it is still happy 20th anniversary to self-assessment tax return filing and happy tax returns submission to all taxpayers ambling along to meet the deadline. Fitness tips with Leanne Spencer
Weight Loss Tips Why the one-size-fits-all approach to dieting won’t help you lose weight Ask 20 people to eat the same diet for 10 weeks and you’ll get 20 different results, despite everyone being under the same controlled conditions. This shouldn’t really be surprising. If we put 20 people in an environment where they are all taught to play a musical instrument, we wouldn’t expect all of them to be playing at the same level, even after the same amount of tuition. We’re all different, biologically, physically, emotionally and genetically.
One Size Does Not Fit All Why do we still sign up to diets that follow the ‘onesize-fits-all’ approach? Wouldn’t it make more sense to personalise what we do, in terms of both diet and exercise? Here are other factors that you should be thinking of when personalising your diet.
The Over-Simplification Of ‘Eat Less & Move More’ We are still recovering from the brainwashing we received in the 1970s about fat being the source of all our weight problems, leaving us thinking it’s the macronutrient to be avoided. What scientists are now discovering about why some of us struggle with our weight, blows the ‘eat less and move more’ and fat demonisation theories out of the water. Here’s why.
It’s In Your Genes Scientists now understand that how we respond to basic nutrition relies a good deal on our genetics. Other factors such as your gastro-intestinal health and the microflora in your gut also have a profound impact on how you process food, absorb micronutrients and store fat.
The Obesogenicity Of The Environment The term ‘obesegenicity’ is the term used to describe how the environment contributes to obesity. In the West, our environment is set up to be as efficient as possible; we have multi-transport systems which remove the need for walking; we have fewer outdoor spaces and fewer pavements; there are fast 38 | SE21 - January 2019
food outlets everywhere; many of our jobs are now desk-bound; we have labour-saving devices which minimise our need to move; our food shopping can be ordered online and delivered straight to our kitchens; our factories and machines emit toxic gases and pollutants which disrupt our hormone profile and in turn can affect our weight.
Social Factors It’s become commonplace to prioritise price over provenance with foods, and we end up eating cheap foods that are not as nutritious. Many of us are now used to eating on the run or in front of the TV, and consume processed foods because they’re quick to prepare. We’re losing the love of home cooking and all because it just takes a bit of time. We need to value our health enough to spend that extra half-hour on a meal. Society has also normalised outsize portions – fast food and drinks sizes have risen year on year.
Behavioural Factors Linked with social factors, there are a number of behavioural factors that affect weight management. We are now more sedentary, and less disposed to walk than we once were. We have become more reliant on transport and labour-saving devices. Many of us have a powerful cognitive dissonance, so even though we know we should move more, or perhaps leave the train a few stops earlier and walk the rest of the way, we don’t. We often drink more alcohol than we should, or postpone the visit to the gym, even though we know we should be doing it. There is an increasing reliance on medications now too which can have an impact on weight. Our decision to take these medicines affects how we store fat and burn energy. There are so many factors which influence body composition, and the clever money is on applying the broad principles of ‘move more’ with personalisation. What worked for your friend may not work for you – because everyone is different. Make it about you. Make it personal. Leanne Spencer @BodyshotPT www.bodyshotperformance.com

Pan Pylas
End of year review
I
t’s a bit like waiting for the P4 bus. You wait an eternity and then two come along at once. That’s certainly the case with regard to two of the local area’s more established drinking dens. Following years of upheaval, it is with great pleasure that this end-of-year review starts off with the news that The Crown and Greyhound in Dulwich Village and The Half Moon in Herne Hill have returned. Welcome back! It is a little bit unfortunate that ‘The Dog’s’ return has coincided with those blasted road-works in the Village. Come on lads, it took less time to build the Northern Line! Another big change in SE21 in 2017 was the departure of Café Rouge, which has been there for as long as this writer has lived in the area. However, for this writer, how welcome to see it replaced by The Real Greek. Though the food can never be as good as my mum’s, surely! As the years go by, it’s quite noticeable how much churn is taking place on the foodie front. Maybe it’s something to do with age akin to how policemen and policewomen all seem to be getting younger and younger. Le Chardon, another restaurant with links to France, closed its doors for the final time too, replaced by Tart London, a purveyor, surprise, surprise, of tarts. However, anyone suffering Gallic withdrawals has La Bonne Bouffe on North Cross Road to try out. And there’s also Suzanne James’ new supper club, fifty seven, on the same street (I don’t have the exact address but I’m sure you can work it out). When the history of Britain in 2017 is written, it’s likely that Theresa May’s triggering of the two-year Brexit timetable in March and her miscalculation in calling a general
40 | SE21 - January 2019
election for June 8th will feature heavily. Labour won all three constituencies in and around Dulwich with much bigger majorities and Ellie Reeves was elected the new MP for Lewisham West and Penge. It would be remiss of us all in the community not to wish long-time Dulwich MP, Dame Tessa Jowell, all the best in her battle against brain cancer. There must be some concern in the community that King’s College Hospital has been put into special measures by the government. Lord Kerslake also stepped down as chairman of the hospital Trust, and voiced worries about the “scale of the challenge” facing both the NHS and the Trust. Another local institution struggling is Dulwich Hamlet. The club needs all the help it can get. Though it’s flying high in the Bostik Premier League, the club is facing a battle for survival following a dispute surrounding its Champion Hill ground. For those who don’t know, the owners of the ground, Meadow Residential have withdrawn their financial support from the club, after Southwark Council rejected Meadow’s plans to redevelop the site. As part of the redevelopment, Meadow was going to build a new stadium for the Hamlet on an adjacent site. Southwark wants Meadow to build more affordable housing. Meadow even threatened to close the
The 2017 Review ground for the recent visit by Brightlingsea Regent on what was a food-bank collection day! Eventually, the Hamlet signed a new license agreement allowing it to play at Champion Hill until the end of the season but did so “under duress.” The club clearly has funding problems and we, the fans, have to help, whether it’s in just turning up, sponsoring games or drinking copious amounts of beer. If you haven’t been, make it a New Year’s resolution. You won’t regret it. Come along to see the derby match against Kingstonian on New Year’s Day. It’ll be a great way to emerge into 2018, a year we hope when sense will prevail and the Hamlet’s future is guaranteed! Whether it’s tripping up while going for a walk, slicing a tee shot out of bounds or volleying into the net, we are truly blessed living where we do. Sports historian Simon Inglis told an audience at Dulwich College recently that there’s no other place in Britain where sport’s legacy has sustained itself through the decades of urbanization and change to the same extent as Dulwich. That’s clear at Dulwich Cricket Club, which this year survived relegation from the Surrey Championship Division Two on the last day of the season, and celebrated its 150th anniversary with a dinner at Lord’s and a tour to India. Here’s to the next 150! In 2017, we had a raft of interesting speakers at the annual Dulwich Literary Festival organised by Dulwich Books, including novelist Alan Hollinghurst and now-retired cricket commentating legend Henry Blofeld. Village Books also had a stellar bunch of speakers too, including Yotam Ottolenghi (yes, food
again), Philip Pullman and Robert Harris (hopefully his new book, Munich, made it into my Christmas stocking!). For many people, the sense of community really emerges at the Dulwich Festival in May, which always seems to be blessed by the weather. Here’s hoping I haven’t jinxed it for next year. From the mayhem at Goose Green through the artists’ open houses to the more genteel atmosphere at Dulwich Park, there’s always something to pique one’s interest. For my part, it’s the beer tent that always seems to win out! For those with an artistic bent, 2017 was one not to miss. The Dulwich Picture Gallery showcased the modernist works of Vanessa Bell, who along with her sister Virginia Woolf was part of the Bloomsbury Group, as well as John Singer Sargent’s stunning Watercolours. And for those younglings (it is Star Wars time, remember), the Robot Zoo at the Horniman Museum & Gardens was good old-fashioned fun. Clearly there’s so much more going on in and around Dulwich, so do keep the team at SE22 magazine posted and I’ll catch you again next year. All the best for a happy 2018!
