Peckham wants its lido back!

ocal swimmers to host ironic bikini picnic to win back their old lido! Peckham has announced plans for a ‘Splashmob’ – an ironically named bikini-clad picnic at the site of the historic lido. It marks the half-way point in their crowd- funding campaign on Spacehive. The campaign is on track for its target, but needs more donations if it is to be successful by the end of July.

A pool party like no other

The day will see Peckham locals and lido-lovers alike gathering for what they’d normally do by a lido - reading, eating, reclining by a fountain and of course, doing lengths. The only thing missing from the photo: the pool itself. 12pm-4pm Sunday 10th July, Peckham Rye Lido’s old site “Peckham Lido isn’t open - yet. But come down in your swimmers, have a picnic & pose for the media, and maybe one day it will be. We’d love to see as many people the local area to come along and make merry on the grass where the lido once flowed. Then we’ll pose for what will hopefully be an iconic photograph, to show the world just how much Peckham people want their lido back. Of course, it will probably rain in which case the only water will be the great British drizzle, but we’ll see!” Lorelei Mathias, Creative/PR, Peckham Lido

Background to the Campaign

Once a sparkling 50 metre outdoor swimming pool, the original Peckham Rye Lido served the swimmers and sun-bathers of South East London for over 50 years. But in 1987 it became out- dated and fell to disrepair. As a sign of changing trends of the time, it was closed and filled in. Now all that remains is a crumbling blue fountain and a mound of grass. In recent years, the tides have turned again. Peckham is among a growing number of British outdoor pools that are re-opening their turnstiles from Saltdean to Tarlair – as part of the renaissance of British Lidos and outdoor swimming.

pool, complete with wild swimming pond channeling the River Peck. The designs for ‘Peckham Beach’ also boast roof-top sunbathing areas, an outdoor cinema, gym and yoga studio, and a function room. It will be a modern mecca for sun-bathing, health and well-being, to attract all walks of life in South East London. But it will feed the local community in many other ways: • An invaluable asset for local schools and swimming clubs. If the next Michael Phelps or Rebecca Adlington lives in Peckham, no one would ever know, without a facility like this. • It breathes new life into a deprived area of London, creating at least 40 full and part time jobs that would suit a range of skill sets and qualifications. • It brings more people into the area and boosts the local economy. Local shops, suppliers, restaurants and bars in Peckham, Nunhead and East Dulwich will benefit from the greater footfall and investment. Once again Harris Girls’ Academy is celebrating the literary arts with opportunities open to our local community, including performances, readings and talks. The theme for 2016 is Growing Up, with many of the scheduled events focusing on childhood, adolescence and old age. This year all of our public events will be run in partnership with the Ivy House, our local Community led Inn on Stuart Road. Hectic Host

The Return of the Punch

hen planning a summer party nothing is easier, or more social, than a summer punch. However, for many years this communal cocktail has been forgotten, or if remembered thoughts of student experiments send shudders down the spine and the mind quickly moves on. If you are able to get past recollections of that fateful evening when everything to hand was tipped into a pot, then it is time to reconsider the punch. If you are not; then think of this as a little immersion therapy – although not literally of course. Punch was introduced into Britain in the 1600’s from India. Apparently our word is derived from the old Hindustani word ‘paanstch’ for five – other sources claim it is from the Sanskrit ‘panc’ also meaning five – either way it is the number of ingredients that were traditionally included – and is a rule of thumb that holds true today. The traditional blend composed; sweet (sugar), sour (lemon), alcohol, water and spices. Records from 1644 show an East Indian Company employee writing one of the first mentions of this drink, where he described the chief alcohol ingredient being arrack; itself one of the oldest spirits known to man and distilled in India from the sap of the coconut tree. The blend was a big hit with British sailors and accordingly its popularity spread, not least to the West Indies where rum based punch was born. Today if you remember the simple fivemantra and the notion of balancing sweet with sour, avoiding overly syrupy sweet concoctions and not over doing it with the alcohol you will arrive at the ideal drink the ideal solution for a Hectic Host who wants to enjoy her or his own party and not play bartender. Forgo orange juice, which although high in vitamin C (the effect of which will be nullified anyway by the alcohol in favour of lighter juices such as apple or cranberry which are less acidic and have a lower sugar content).

Our Roullier White punch du jour is: one-part lemon juice, two-parts vodka, four-parts dry ginger ale and four- parts apple juice. Float with lots of ice, torn mint and raspberries. Fruit cups or summer cups are a British version of punch, they are usually gin based and contain a blend of several spirits rather than just one. James Pimms from Newham in Kent, ran an oyster bar opposite Buckingham Palace, to which it is said the royal family were frequent visitors. Pimms invented an easy to drink cocktail that would was served as an accompaniment to his popular shellfish. It is not difficult therefore to imagine how Pimms became a staple at every garden party in Britain. To mix a perfect Pimms add one part Pimms to two parts dry ginger ale, add borage, mint and orange slices. Borage is a nice alternative to cucumber, whilst having a taste that is reminiscent of the vegetable, also has sweet honeyed notes. Sipsmith London Cup is crafted from the company’s own London dry gin, infused with Earl Grey tea, borage, lemon verbena and other botanicals. Simply mix with lemonade, ice and lots of lemon wheels. Tarta de Santiago Santiago Tart Filling • 6 Whole Eggs • 200g Caster Sugar • 200g Ground Almonds • 1 teaspoon Baking Powder • 1 tablespoon Frangelico if you're feeling naughty

Midsummers Day has been and gone, but with school holidays approaching summer is really only just beginning for many of us. Here is a recipe for Santiago Tart, a traditional almond cake or pie from Galicia, Spain which can be traced back to the Middle Ages. I hope it helps to get you into the holiday mood!. Prep time: Up to 3 hours. Cook time: 45 minutes Serves 8-10

Sweet Pastry Base • 12oz Plain Flour • 7oz Diced Unsalted Butter • 2oz Icing Sugar • 2 egg yolks • 2 tablespoons Cold Water Pour the flour and butter into a large bowl. Using your finger tips rub the flour and butter together until it resembles breadcrumbs, stir in the icing sugar. Make a well in the centre of the 'breadcrumb' mix and then add the two yolks and 1 tablespoon of water (you might not need all the water, so it is better to add it a bit at a time). Using the back of a butter knife, slowly stir in the yolk and water mix into the flour. Once it has come together, get your hands in there and work it until it becomes a firm dough. Don’t worry if you don’t need to use all the water to get to this stage. Wrap in cling film and chill for 2 hours. Once the 2 hours are up, remove the pastry from the fridge and place on a floured surface. Roll it out until it is about 5mm thick. Carefully lay it over your pastry tin and gently push it into all the edges. Trim off any excess pastry and leave to one side while you prepare the filling. 14 | SE21 - July 2016

Crack your eggs into a large bowl and roughly whisk then add all the other ingredients and thoroughly whisk again until it becomes a smooth batter . Pour it into your pastry case (No need to blind bake the pastry) Only fill it about three quarters full because the baking powder will cause it to rise. Carefully pop it into your pre-heated oven, for around 45 minutes at 1500c or until the filling resembles a sponge and a skewer can go into and come out clean. Once it has cooled, you can garnish the top with plenty of icing sugar. It traditionally has the cross of Santiago de Compostela on, but if you don’t tell Natalia, you can keep it plain. A nice alternative is to use coconut instead of almond and zest a lime into the mix. Enjoy!

English Hardy Geraniums

bout Rozanne, Ann Folkard and Margaret Wilson.. (or advice on English hardy geraniums). Pretty, a great filler, easy to grow, slug resistant but loved by bees, long flowering, and shade tolerant, geraniums are an absolute must. With so many to choose from, here are a few of the best.

Never Ending Blooms One of the most popular geraniums, Geranium ‘Rozanne’ has striking large blue flowers with white centres and lovely mottled foliage. Happy in sun or part shade, its spreading habit makes it great ground cover, but do give it space. Most impressive of all is its amazingly long and late flowering period, from June right through to November. Newer hybrids include 'Azure Rush’ a more compact version of 'Rozanne’ with paler blue flowers and ‘Lilac Ice’, which is less spreading and has lighter foliage and pale lilac pink flowers. Or try 'Pink Penny’ which will fill your garden with hot pinky/mauve flowers from June to October. (These newer hybrids take a while to get to local garden centres but are available on line from Crocus (crocus.co.uk) or specialist nurseries.)

True Blues ‘Johnson’s Blue’ is another popular classic (voted RHS plant of the Centenary in 2013), with delicate foliage and a mass of papery blue petals from May to August. It’s great under roses or shrubs, in full sun or part shade – but too much shade can make it a bit leggy. Similar varieties include the newer ‘Brookside,’ with masses of intense blue flowers, and its slightly bigger seedling, ‘Orion’, which has larger, more violet blue flowers, on stalks high above the foliage.

Fab Foliage The spring flowering geranium phaeum with their wands of small flowers and striking patterned leaves are great for a shady spot - whether dry or damp, amongst ferns. Geranium phaeum black widow is very stylish with its deep purple-black flowers and beautiful dark leaf markings. ‘Samobor’ is very similar, with slightly browner flowers and paler leaves. Or for something less somber, ‘Alba’ has airy sparkly white flowers, great for lighting up 16 | SE21 - July 2016

dark corners. The more unusual varieties ‘Margaret Wilson’ with its purple flowers against and lime green variegated foliage and ‘Rose Madder’ with gorgeous brownish pink flowers are also worth looking out for.

Small And Sweet Compact, low growing (around 20cm high) with dainty flowers, geranium sanguineum varieties make great ground cover for smaller spaces. Geranium sanguineum bloody cranesbill has dark green feathery foliage and vivid magenta flowers from March until June while the similar ‘Tiny Monster’ has a mass of larger shocking pink flowers until late autumn. Softer sanguinium ‘Album’ has small pure white flowers, May to June, but the beautiful pale pink flowers of sanguineum var. striatum will keep going until August.

Hot Stuff The bigger and bolder Geranium psilostemon with its vibrant magenta flowers with a purple black eye is stunning, but needs space (about a square meter). It flowers from June to August and the leaves turn fiery red in Autumn. The hybrid, ‘Patricia’ has the same dark eye but brighter pink flowers and is slightly more compact (60cm high) and longer flowering. The rangier Geranium ‘Ann Folkard’ has bright green early foliage and rich magenta flowers with the dark eye. Again it needs space scrambling to a meter and flowers until September. Taxpayers, what is your focus?

t is quite amazing where taxpayers choose to focus their energy. A recent experience left me reflecting on this. A disgruntled employee was explaining to me rather forcefully how his boss had cheated him out of three hours overtime. This underpayment is a wholly unacceptable practice. The taxpayer continued to vent his annoyance on this boss with a variety of name calling. Unfortunately, not knowing or having never met the boss, no view was possible from my side. My concern was that the taxpayer should focus on the issue. A quick review of the array of payslips from the taxpayer revealed the gross underpayment for May 2016 was £36.45 (3hrs x hourly rate). The irate taxpayer felt satisfied that his claim was proven. Questioning the taxpayer further to ascertain was there any other issues with his pay, he said, “No, that’s all.” This response surprised me. Why? Based upon his earlier answers to some exploratory questions and a review of his mountain of payslips it was clear that he had been assigned the wrong tax code. According to the taxpayer, “I knew I was short last month because the amount paid into my bank was different.” That is all true as he had been underpaid by three hours. However, the truth of the matter was the taxpayer had been blissfully happy being consistently underpaid in previous months. What the taxpayer had failed to recognise was the tax code that drives how much taxpayers get to keep each pay period. The use of the wrong tax code in this case confirms a recent report by the National Audit Office, which found that over three million people may have paid the wrong tax. This is not a surprise because 9 out of 10 taxpayers never check their tax codes. There is a blind obsession with net pay as though this is the sole driver of their lives. The personal tax code determines the amount of income a taxpayer can earn, tax free. The basic PAYE tax code for 2016-17 is 1100L. This means a taxpayer is allowed to earn £11,000 before any payment of income tax. So the first part of the tax code indicates the level of free

pay available to a tax payer per fiscal year (6th April – 5th April). The letter indicates your tax status for example L is the basic personal allowance for a taxpayer born after 5 April 1948. A tax code ending with ‘T’ means that a taxpayer has other items that HMRC need to take into account. An increasingly popular tax code suffix is ‘M’. This is the tax code for a married taxpayer who has received 10% of their partner’s tax code. Some of the other tax codes in use include the following: BR - All income taxed at 20% without any personal allowance. This is most common for holders of second jobs; K - The taxpayer has a negative free pay and owes HMRC; DO - Income will be subject to higher rate tax, 40%; D1 - Income will be subject to the additional rate tax, 45%. Tax payers need to be familiar with the ABC of tax codes as it has a greater impact on their lifestyle than their overtime pay. An employees’ tax code will determine how much of their overtime pay they can keep or whether working overtime is necessary in the first instance. The review of the underpaid overtime case revealed he had overpaid £643 income tax in 2015-16 and some £150 to date in 2016-17. Perhaps taxpayers need a shift of focus from net pay to their tax code. It’s just a thought!

Struggling to get results from your workouts?

here are many reasons why you might not be getting the results you want and are working hard for. The best advice I can give you is this: listen to your body. It’s very common to be doing all the right things, and yet still not get results. So why would this be?

You're working against your genetics We now know that genetics plays a huge part in fitness and weight management. Understanding what your DNA says about you is really important to a successful health and fitness program. DNA testing removes all the guesswork and allows you to exercise according to your genetic strengths.

Stress Stress is one of the single biggest causes of preventable death in the UK. Exercise will raise cortisol (the stress hormone) levels, and that’s healthy and normal. However, if there are already elevated levels of cortisol in the blood, exercise can have a damaging or counterproductive effect. You might actually be lowering your immune response and encouraging inflammation. If you’re feeling very stressed out, it might be a better idea to go for a light jog, a walk or to rest.

Age We just have to roll with the punches and accept that as we get older, we need to adapt our exercise program and our expectations. The important thing is adaptation – it comes back to listening to your body, and responding to what it needs on a dayto-day and year-on-year basis. Prioritise quality over quantity. In other words, put the quality of the exercise sessions over the number of sessions you do and how long they are.

Sleep Poor sleep can have a big impact on the success and enjoyment levels of your workouts. If you’re not sleeping well, you might get through the workout, but you’ll miss out on the benefits if your body isn’t able to cope, whether that’s muscle-building or fatburning. It’s now possible to monitor your sleep using wearable tech, and then cross-correlate your sleep data against your activity levels to understand how well you’ve recovered and therefore what kind of activity you should plan.

Hydration It’s very important to stay hydrated at all times. Even when you’re 2% dehydrated, your performance will be affected. If you’ve lost more than 5% of body weight, can have a performance impairment of up to 30%. One of the biggest mistakes I see is people neglecting to drink enough water. I’ve heard all the excuses, from not wanting to go to the loo every hour to not liking the taste. It’s vital to survival and optimum health, just find a way to drink it!

Your training partner Sometimes your success can be affected by the person you’re working out with. Are you finding that you end up following their workout, the one that they enjoy and get results from? Is that person really supportive of your goals? It might be that you’re better served working out alone, or just doing aspects of your workouts together. Beware training with your boyfriend/girlfriend/husband/wife too, as that rarely works in my experience! (Although if it does, great, stick with it!)

Goals The old adage “what gets measured gets done” is valid here. Having a really clearly defined goal will help you to stay focused, it’s as simple as that. You’ll still need to adapt and adjust according to 32 | SE21 - July 2016
