Welcome to SE21 This Month T: 020 8088 1941 E: angela@semagazines.co.uk w: www.semagazines.co.uk @SEMags Photograph by Jermyn Photography

Welcome June was definitely hot enough for me! So many events benefitted from the glorious weather including the wonderful garden party hosted in honour of the patrons of Link Age Southwark. It was lovely to see so many familar faces and to celebrate the wonderful work, Link Age Southwark does each year. This month sees the return of Step Inside Dulwich, but this month, we have stepped outside to look at how you can make the most of your garden, see 12. Suzanne James shows us a lovely summer recipe on page 14. Our new Garden Talk columnist Janine Winlaw takes a look at how you can go Deep Purple in your garden this summer, see 16. If you are struggling with your health, Leanne Spencer discuss the seven secrets of transforming your health on page 26. Our resident pet care specialist, Leonie St Clair has some timely advice on keeping pets safe in the hot weather, see p27. The Last Word this month goes to local business woman, Jennifer O’Donnell. Jennifer is passionate about making sure her employees are paid a living wage, she tells us more on page 32. See you next month.

Keeping Pets Safe In Hot Weather

I

t’s nearly holiday season and the thermometer mercury is rising. Many of us will be venturing abroad for even more sun, and a fair few will be taking their dogs. However, even for those set to enjoy the intermittent heat on home shores, please remember that our pets do not cope as well in the heat as do we. Pet thermoregulatory mechanisms only really include panting, some sweating from the paws and radiation heat loss from fur- these systems are not as efficient for bodily cooling as is as the human ability to sweat all over. Under conditions of intense heat it does not take that long for a cat or a dog to suffer heatstroke. Hyperthermia is a life threatening, medical emergency, where high temperatures and humidity cause the major internal organs, including the brain, to start to shut down, eventually leading to seizures, coma and death. Broadly, when temperatures exceed 39 degrees centigrade, steps should be taken to provide shade and cool the animal.

Quick guide to keeping pets happy and free from harm in the heat • Never leave your dog or cat in a parked car, even with a window slightly open. Quite aside from the risk of theft, it takes only takes minutes for pets to become extremely distressed in the heat of the car, even in shade. If you are travelling have the windows down with good air flow or air conditioning. • Never leave your house on a hot day, whether for a walk or car journey with your pet, without a bottle of water and something to drink it out of. • If you are sitting or picnicking in the park on a very hot day, be aware that your dog may get overly hot much more quickly than you. Find shade or take a large umbrella and plenty of water. • Don’t play strenuous ball or running games with your dog in intense heat. • Be aware, brachycephalic breeds (cats or dogs with squashed or shortened noses) find it much harder to pant and breathe in the heat.

• Very young, very old, obese and sick animals will find hot weather more difficult. • City walks on hot pavements can be taxing for all sorts of dogs. Try walking barefoot and see how you like it. Keep an eye on your pet and look for signs of discomfort, seeking shade and dispensing water as necessary. • On very hot days, cats should not be shut into areas like a conservatory or shed- either can heat up very quickly- check that your pet, especially cats, have not sneaked in. Ensure there are shaded, cool areas in the home your pet has easy access to. • A trip to the groomers can help long-coated breeds and don’t forget breeds with white coats, single coats or hairless types need sun protection for their skin. • A water-bottle partly filled with cool water or a dampened towel placed on the floor, make handy cooling mats which your pet can lie on. • Learn to recognise the signs of heatstroke; extreme panting, dark red or grey gums, drooling, anxiety, confusion/disorientation, lethargy, vomiting, even diarrhoea. • In cases of suspected heatstroke, seek shade and apply cool but not cold water to the pet’s underarms, groin and pads. Do not immerse or cover the pet with water as this will heat your pet up more. Fan the animal to increase cooling. If he can drink, give small amounts of water but do not force drinking or let him gulp it. Try to keep your pet moving slowly. Speak to a vet as soon as possible. It’s mostly common sense but so easy to forget in the heat of the moment!

Step Outside Dulwich with Ems Penniston

Making The Most Of Your Small Outdoor Space

S

ummer is nearly here, so it’s time to look at your outdoor space and make it ready to enjoy those long sunny days and balmy evenings with a barbeque and glass of bubbly. Imagine yourself sitting in the perfect small, outdoor space, describe what it would look like and take that as your inspiration. Think of the space as an external room rather than an empty space and decide the primary function it will serve; a space for socializing, a children’s play area, a quiet, secluded retreat where you can escape the world. Here are a few simple ideas that won’t cost a fortune, but help you create that idyllic small outdoor space.

Vertical Wall Gardens

Create A Central Focal Point

Where space is limited think vertical. Use walls in a small outdoor garden when space is limited; instead of taking up precious floor space think vertical. Optimise available walls, fencing panels, arbours or arches or simply create your own vertical garden wall. Living walls can look fantastic in small town gardens or even on flat balconies. Many different types of plant species can be tailored to your preference, using plants that have an attractive, structural or architectural look such as ivy, succulents and grasses.

In a small or confined space it helps to create a central focal point, something that catches the eye straight away so people are instantly drawn towards it when they step outside. If the space is to function as a social area then the seating / dining area should perform this role. Locate where the sun shines the longest, but ensure that some shade is provided. The alternative is to create a dramatic planting scheme or to use structural forms to draw the eye in.

Container Gardening

There are several ways to create the illusion of a bigger garden. If a neighbour’s property has mature plants on their side of the fence consider mimicking the planting scheme on your side, this will create the appearance of a larger garden. Another option is to use of mirrors to reflect foliage, planting and perspectives. This can deceive the eye into believing that space exists beyond the actual boundaries.

Container gardens are increasingly popular and can reduce the level of upkeep necessary; regular watering and the occasional feed is all that’s needed. You can use wooden barrels, ceramic or terracotta pots, and even plastic planters now offer an attractive option. Oversized pots and plants can make a small outdoor space feel much bigger, so think large!

Garden Fencing

A solid, well-maintained fence can provide privacy, structure and definition to a small garden. Fences can also form the backdrop for the design of your outdoor space. If you have to build a fence don’t just opt for the ubiquitous lap fencing, try horizontal or diagonal battening, leaving an equal space between each batten, this will create a more contemporary look. Paint the battens with a coloured wood dye to add a touch of sophistication. 12 | SE21 - July 2017 Impressions

Create The Illusion Of More Space

Outdoor Lighting

Subtle or clever lighting using solar, string or fixed lighting can highlight the feature areas of your outdoor space, such as the central focal point or the dramatic planting scheme you’ve established. Hopefully these few tips and hints have inspired you to make the most of your small outdoor space. Remember any outdoor space in London is valuable and precious; so do make the most of what you have. It will only improve your quality of your life and make the most of your leisure time.

Minted Garden Vegetables with Real Salad Cream School holidays are fast approaching and summer is well and truly here! Here is a recipe for a wonderful, jewel coloured summer salad. Preparation time: 20 minutes Cooking time: 35 minutes

Ingredients • 2 Bunches Baby Beetroot with leaves • 2 tablespoons vinegar • 250g (8oz) English Asparagus • 1kg (2lb) Broad Beans, Shelled • 400g (13oz) Baby Courgettes, cut into 1cm (1/2 inch) thick slices • 200g (6 ∞ oz) firm English Goat’s Cheese, Crumbled • Bunch of mint, chopped

For the Salad Cream • 4 Eggs • 2 Tablespoons White Wine Vinegar • ∞ Tablespoon English Mustard • 4-5 Tablespoons Single Cream

Method 1) Trim the beetroot keeping the smallest leaves for the salad, and place the roots in a pan with the vinegar. Cover with water, bring to the boil and simmer for 20 minutes. 2) Cool, drain and peel. Bring a lightly salted pan of water to the boil and cook the asparagus for 1 minute. Add the broad beans and courgettes. Cook for 3 minutes, drain and cool. 3) For the salad cream, cook the eggs in boiling water for 7 minutes. Cool, then shell them. Remove the yolks and mash with the vinegar and mustard. Add the cream until smooth. You can use a hand held blender for this. 4) Season with salt and white pepper. Mix the cheese with the mint vegetables and leaves and sprinkle over the salad. Drizzle the salad cream over the salad to serve.

Garden Talk with Janine Winlaw

Deep Purple

F

lowers aren’t the only way of giving your garden colour and interest –plum colouredfoliage adds real drama, depth and contrast. Use in a few key areas with some sun, (it tend to blend into shady spots) to highlight brighter flowers. Here’s my pick of the best.

Perennials

Heuchera. I’ve recently discovered the appeal of heuchera – they’re easy to grow in sun or shade and their big evergreen leaves and pretty early flower spires provide winter and spring interest. There are lots of purple varieties such as H. ‘Purple Palace’ and H. ‘Obsidian’ but my favourite is ‘Plum Pudding’ with silvery plum veined leaves. They look gorgeously moody with dark blues and stunning with silvers, soft pinks and mauves. Sedum. S. ‘Matrona’ has dark stems, grey purple leaves and in August, large pale pink flowers – a great combination. The gorgeous S. ‘Blue Pearl’ with deep bluey purple leaves and bright pink flowers is fantastic with silver plants such as Stachys byzantina. Other purple-tinged varieties include ‘Jose Aubergine’ and Sedum telephium ‘Purple Emperor’. They like full sun and well drained soil and go well with drought tolerant plants such as cistus and ornamental grasses. Anthriscus ‘Ravenswing’. An elegant purple stemmed form of cow parsley that looks great with ferns, iris and foxgloves, which also flower in May and June. Plant in sun or partial shade.

Large shrubs

Cotinus (smoke bush tree). This is a stunning shrub with oval burgundy leaves and smoke-like plumes in late summer. Then comes the amazing autumn colour, C. ‘Grace', turning a pinky orange, and C. coggygria ‘Royal Purple’ scarlet. Cut hard back in early spring and they’ll shoot up in summer. Pale bluey purples such as campanula persicifolia, or Geranium ‘Johnson’s Blue’ look great with it. Sambuca nigra. Another show-stopper with delicate black purple leaves, which show off the flat pale pink flowers beautifully. I have mine surrounded by pale pink Astriantia ‘Roma’. Silvery leaves of phlomis would shine out against it too. Plant in full sun to partial shade. 16 | SE21 - July 2017 Janine

Trees

Acer. There are lots of acers available with dark leaves including the elegant Acer palmatum ‘Atropurpureum’ and the slightly smaller Acer ‘Bloodgood’ with feathery dark purple leaves, turning an intense red in autumn. Underplant with liriope or cyclamen for a gorgeous focal point. The dinky dome- shaped Acer palmatum dissectum is perfect for a smaller garden. Acers are happy in part shade or sun – but ideally not south facing. Circis Canadensis ‘Forest Pansy’. Along with the attractive deep purple heart shaped leaves, which turn yellow in autumn, this small tree has the added bonus of bright purple pink flower in early spring. Unlike acers, cercis like a warm south facing spot. Nice with pink camellia and lime green foliage.

Smaller shrubs

Berberis thunbergii f. atropurpurea ‘Harlequin’. The reddish purple leaves marbled with pink and white provide a contrasting darker leaf to silvers and blues. Pruning it it each year will help it keep its colour. Pittosporum tenuifolium ‘Tom Thumb’. A ball shaped shrub with small purple evergreen leaves and almost black stems, it gives winter structure and is pretty in spring when the new green speckled leaves emerge. I’ve seen it looking striking with Anemanthele lessoniana grass and alliums, or as a dark backdrop to red-stemmed cornus. It likes full sun and well-drained soil.

Bespoke Senior Care in Dulwich

Home Instead Senior Care is the UK's Number 1 quality Home Care Provider. Our compassionate, highly trained, locally based CAREGivers deliver bespoke care in and around Dulwich. Our range of services includes: • Dementia Care • Companionship • Home help • Personal care • Respite care • Sleepover services • 24 hour care When providing care, especially to those living with dementia, it is important that the same CAREGiver attends each visit. This ensures that our clients build a meaningful and trustful relationship with them. This trust and understanding helps us to deliver a highly personalised care service, and by matching and introducing each CAREGiver prior to the initial call, we alleviate the uncertainty that may arise when inviting an unfamiliar person into the home.

Our three wonderful CAREGivers, Bernie, Eva and Sally-Ann provided 24 hour care to a client in Dulwich and, despite his age and dementia, were able to take him for weekly walks in Dulwich Park, and help him to remain living in the comfort of his own home surrounded by his family. Our CAREGivers always give their very best when helping to look after other people's loved ones, so it is always a welcome pleasure when they receive positive feedback, which Catrin the daughter was glad to do and putting pen to paper, said the following, "To all at Home Instead, a short note to say how much we all appreciated the care that my father received from Home Instead, I only wished that we had started to use you sooner. All of the carers who cared for my dad were immensely kind, caring, competent and professional, we all miss seeing you but I would be grateful if you could share our appreciation with them. Thank you."

Food in Art - 11 July The first UK show in nearly 100 years devoted to watercolours by the American artist, John Singer Sargent (1856–1925). Renowned as the portraitist of his generation, Sargent also devoted time to developing his watercolours, which dazzle with light and colour, demonstrating a technical brilliance and striking individuality. This exhibition brings together over 80 watercolours to reveal Sargent’s idiosyncratic view of the world and the scale of his achievement.

This lecture examines why artists have turned their attention to the humble subject of food across many ages and styles.

Education News from Alleyns

How to build young designers and engineers

P

hilip Saville and Brendan Allen of Alleyn’s School’s DT Department on why we should encourage children’s enthusiasm for design and manufacturing There is something very special about the joy a child experiences when they have solved a problem with their own hands or turned one of their own designs into reality. If nurtured, this joy will blossom, become a passion and perhaps feed the next generation of creative designers and innovative engineers. We live in the most fast moving and technologically exciting period ever. We can’t tell with any certainty what areas of design, technology and engineering will emerge in the future. We can take an educated guess that areas such as Nanotechnology and the transport sector such the Hyperloop transport system in Dubai will continue to evolve. So we are training students for jobs that do not exist yet. Because of this uncertainty, it is in the best interests of our children to instil in them inquisitiveness, and a thirst to understand current and emerging design technologies. This might start with a pupil 3-D printing a phone holder and lead to them designing and making a piece of low cost medical equipment for the developing world. “...if it is not nature… then it is Design”. Children are curious and persistent. They often see through the glitz and misguided loyalty with which we smother our favourite products. Their questioning and honesty offers us insight and clarity – as adults, we should try to support it! Here are a few tips: • Start early – Children are never too young to grasp how the world around them is designed, engineered and made. • Encourage their questioning - when a child asks “How does that work” or “How is that made?”, see it as an opportunity to teach the next James Dyson or Jonathan Ive of Apple. • Learn with them – If you don’t know the answer to a question let them know, then work together on ways to find out.

• Visit the reference section – local and school libraries are stocked with amazing books which explain the workings of types of technology. • Visit design, technology and science spaces – The Design Museum, Science Museum and others like them are always full of inspiration, explanation and learning. • Try a magazine – There are a number of ‘How things work’ titles that will inform and engage. Okido, Aquila and WhizzBangPop are all worth a look. • Get online – There are a whole host of online resources which answer questions with amazing videos and animations. Design and Technology as a subject is here to stay and we are all better off for it. It develops spatial intelligence, empathy and social awareness, analytical skills, problem identification and problem solving skills. More than that, it turns inquisitive children into new-world-smart, creative and confident philanthropists, who can problem solve real world issues, and are undaunted by challenges where the solution has not already been suggested.

Horniman Museum & Gardens Indian Summer

Pani Until Sunday 26 November Pani is the word for water across large parts of South Asia. In this thought-provoking display, artist Daksha Patel explores the complex relationships between people and water in this region. Fitness tips with Leanne Spencer

Successful Health Transformation The Seven Secrets of a Successful Health Transformation Why is it that some people manage to transform their health and others don’t? I’ve worked with hundreds of clients over the last few years, and I’ve observed the differences between those who succeed and those who don’t. Here’s what you need to consider if you want to reach a successful outcome.

You are fully invested Successful people know that in order to succeed, you need to invest, and I don’t just mean in time and money. Someone who has what it takes to transform their health will be fully invested emotionally, physically and intellectually and very focused on their desired outcome.

You have patience Implementing lasting and sustainable changes is a slow game. Think a marathon not a 100m sprint. You need to be patient, and focused. Appreciating that things take time is essential to the outcome, and you won’t be in a rush.

You trust the program Holding on to preconceived ideas and limiting beliefs damages the chances of success. Trust in the person you’ve hired to help you. Believe in the power of two people focused on a common goal with an unswerving desire to make it happen. Allow yourself to be guided.

You make it personal Recognising that everyone’s different is essential for success. Focus on your needs, your goals and aspirations. Don’t compare yourself to others. Don’t accept the one-size-fits-all approaches. Make it about you. Do what works for you not everyone else. 26 | SE21 - July 2017

You show up When you show up, you’re fully engaged and present. You are prepared for coaching sessions, have done the homework and remain openminded and focused. You understand that you still need to do the hard work, but need the expertise of a professional to help you execute.

You take a holistic view Changing your health requires a holistic view. An issue with sleep for example might be affected by nutrition, hormones, stress, digestion or any number of factors related to sleep hygiene. Being able to look at the bigger picture is essential.

You have trust in your coach There’s a whole load of conflicting advice out there about health, fitness and nutrition. If you want to stay focused and be successful, find someone you trust and listen to them. It’s okay to stay informed but if you cast the net too widely, you’ll end up conflicted and confused.

Pets Corner with Leonie St Clair

Financial Matters with David Frederick

Is help at hand for our carers?

T

he last 12 months has been a year-long rollercoaster for all of us. On 24th June 2016, we woke-up to the results of the Brexit referendum and throughout May - June 2017 we were entertained by the Theresa and Jeremy showdown! This is all very well but way down the list is the everyday life of most of us. What do I mean? Let’s put it in context with some figures. Yes some scary figures! There is currently over 2.5 million people living with cancer in the UK. The number living with cancer is increasing 3% per annum. By 2030 the number of people living with cancer is expected to rise to 4 million. Why all the facts and figures? Firstly, it rarely gets wall to wall media coverage as the above events, does it? Secondly, with the growth or explosion in cancer patients, deaths and survivors, where are their champions? In recent weeks, I may have stumbled upon the answer for that second question. The unsung heroes of our cancer patients are families and friends or what we can class as carers. These are the people who make the daily trips with the patients to attend treatment sessions and cater for their well-being. However, this begs the questions what support exists for these carers? There is some mixed news in this department. Carers can qualify for Carer’s Allowance. The current rate is £62.70pw. To qualify for Carer’s Allowance, the carer must be: caring for someone who gets a qualifying disability benefit; caring for that person for at least 35 hours a week; aged 16 years or over; not in full-time education; earn under £116 a week (after deductions); and satisfy UK residence and presence conditions. The qualifying conditions for Carer’s Allowance do not just apply to the carer. The cancer patient must also already be in receipt of a ‘qualifying benefit’ • Attendance Allowance (lower or higher rate) • Disability Living Allowance care component (middle or higher rate) • Personal Independence Payment daily living component (standard or enhanced rate) • Armed Forces Independence Payment • Constant Attendance Allowance (of £67.90 or more paid with an industrial injuries disablement, war or service pension).

30 | SE21 - David July 2017 Frederick

Carers receiving certain other benefits, including a State Pension, may not be eligible to claim Carer’s Allowance due to overlapping benefit rules. Carer’s Allowance is a taxable benefit. However, income tax will only be payable if the carer has other sources of taxable income, and their combined income exceeds £11,500 in 2017-18. A carer receiving Carer’s Allowance may also claim Carer Premium, which is an additional payment that can be added to other benefits being received such as: Income Support, Housing Benefit or Job Seeker’s Allowance (income based). A cancer patient with a disability would enable their carer to claim Carer’s Credit. This is a means of carers protecting their pension rights whilst they undertake care duties for someone, not paying National Insurance (NI) contributions through paid work and are unable to claim Carer’s Allowance. Carer’s Credit is not a monetary payment but a NI contribution credit. However, to qualify for the Carer’s Credit the cancer patient must be in receipt of one of the qualifying benefits or Constant Attendance Allowance. Carer’s Allowance can be claimed by calling the Carer’s Allowance Unit on 0345 608 4321 or online via www.gov.uk/carers-allowance/how-to-claim. Carer’s Allowance provides some comfort for carers and should not be mistaken as a financial solution or a panacea. It is more akin to a bitter sweet pill for those who have to fall back onto it for support whilst caring for loved ones.

The Last Word with Jennifer O’Donnell Describe your perfect weekend We are so lucky in London that there is so much to see and do. I love using a London Walks guide book (currently using London Hidden Walks by Stephen Millar) and meeting up with a few friends to explore the corners of this city that most of us walk past unnoticed in our daily lives. We usually fall upon a fair few pubs along the way which is, of course, all part of the adventure.

Where are you to be found on Saturday?

Jennifer O’Donnell owns a commercial and domestic cleaning company based in South East London. Commercial cleans cover zones 1 and 2 and domestic cleaning all of South East London. Jennifer is committed to ensuring low paid workers are protected with fair pay and employment rights and has highlighted the challenges of this through various politicians, press, radio, TV interviews and on a panel at a Living Wage symposium at the House of Commons. In 2015 Heidi Alexander MP held her up in the House of Commons as an example to how big business should operate.

How long have you lived in the area? I’ve lived here for 12 years. At the time it was the only area still close to central London where we could buy a house and a garden. I love the feel here, it is like a village in the middle of London.

The most famous person you’ve met? I used to work in the entertainment sector where you get to meet lots of interesting people and it’s hard to pick out one. Ray Davies once told me I looked like a Cabaret singer & Ian Brown predicted I was having a boy when I was 7 months pregnant (I had a girl).

Do you belong to any groups? I have just started going to CwS (Cooking with Scissors); a local business networking initiative that meets upstairs at the Palmerston every last Wednesday of the month. If you run a local business this is a great way to meet and network with other businesses. It is very friendly and there is varied mix of trades who share business knowledge and chit chat. 32 | SE21 - July 2017

Saturday is the day I play taxi service to my children’s weekend activities, so I am usually somewhere between Goose Green and Alleyns school claiming it is the worst traffic ever and wishing I’d set off 15 minutes earlier! At some point I’ll either pop into a café or wander around the market on North Cross Road only to realise that I’m late for the pick- up and then I jump back on that hamster wheel again and off I go!

The best meal I’ve ever had.. Every 3 months or so my husband and a friend get up at 4.30am on a Saturday and trek up to Billingsgate market to stock up on fish. That evening we have a kind of scallops and black pudding paella fiesta. It is rude food to the max!

Your favourite place to go for a drink? The Gowlett. A great mix of people, fun atmosphere and the best pizza in London. Oh and the best New Year’s Day parties ever! A close second is Franks’ on top of the Peckham Car Park on a warm summer’s night with a saunter through the Bold Tendencies art levels along the way.

The best kept secret... Hot Yoga Peckham (various locations locally). As a trepid yoga beginner, I can honestly say that Stevie Jamieson’s classes have changed my approach to life and managing the stresses and strains of being a full time working mum. This is such a great class; dynamic, fun and incredibly stress relieving.

Where’s your favourite place to walk? Peckham Rye Park. If you enter via Dunstan’s Road in the morning you will be welcomed by the Dawn Chorus of our local birdlife.

If money was no object.. I would build a utility room. It’s all I want out of life.
