Welcome to SE21

I am pleased to say the sun is back whilst I am finishing the July magazines and about time too! The forecast is for a very warm spell, so I am glad that I won’t need to put the heating on again; a first for me in June!

As usual I have rounded up all the great events taking place in and around Dulwich. The events pages start on page 6. July is another busy month for events, so we have an amazing nine pages of online and in person events happening in and around Dulwich.

Please do check any event before turning up to make sure that they are still going ahead. Remember to check out www.arounddulwich.co.uk too as many events get added after I have gone to print. You can often find out more details online too.

What could be more perfect that Growing A Bee-friendly Garden? Janine Winlaw tells us what to do in Garden Talk, see page 12.

Leonie St Clair is back with Pets Corner and part 2 of what to do when your cat goes missing. See page 20 for more.

Remember the magazine depends on all the wondeful local advertisers, so please do let them know if you saw them in this magazine!

Until next time.

What's On - July

Now until Sunday 14 July:

Making Connections

7:30pm-9pm. A new, site-specific production of Noel Coward’s Still Lives, which inspired the film Brief Encounter. Directed by Peckham-based Rebecca McCutcheon and adapted by awardwinning playwright Dan Rebellato, this version interweaves Still Lives with Coward’s lesserknown Quadrille, creating a world of shifting relationships, desires and missed opportunities for love in the comings and goings of a station platform.

Delicately written and deceptively light, the play explores life’s deepest dilemmas, the sliding doors effect of each of our decisions, which carry us along, away from other lives which might have been. With an all-female cast playing cross-gender roles, women’s desire and agency is placed at the heart of the production. With live music, installations and movement, Still Lives will create a world of charged beginnings and endings in the symbolic and literal space of The Old Waiting Room. The production will combine emotionally engaging narrative with immersive theatre techniques, creating an unforgettable experience. Pre-Season Friendlies

https://dulwichhamletfc.co.uk

The football action just keeps coming. With Dulwich Hamlet Women’s title triumph still fresh in the memory, and the men’s Euros in full swing, it’s already time to turn our attention to the next campaign at DHFC. Pre-season friendlies in the warm summer months bring waves of anticipation, and July sees plenty of chances to get right back in the pink ‘n’ blue.

The men’s team have six friendly outings throughout the month. First up it’s a trip to St Paul’s Sports Ground in Rotherhithe to face Fisher FC on Saturday 6th. Then we host Crystal Palace Under 21s at Champion Hill on Tuesday 9th –always a treat as we pit our wits against the young stars of our Premier League neighbours. We host Dagenham & Redbridge of the National League on Saturday 13th, then travel to Dorking Wanderers on Saturday 20th.

Hornchurch visit Champion Hill on Tuesday 23rd and we complete the month on the road at Haringey Borough on Tuesday 30th. Midweek evening fixtures are always atmospheric and during pre-season particularly enjoyable, with the chance to spend barmy evenings on the terraces checking in with friends and checking out new signings, new kits and new hope. Men’s matches kick off at 3pm on Saturdays and 7.45 on midweek evenings. For our Champions, the triumphant women’s first team

– hopefully just about recovered from the magical Promotion Roundabout celebrations – preparation for life in the National League, Division One begins on Sunday 14th with a trip to AFC Wimbledon. This will be a great test as Wimbledon have just won the league Dulwich are going into.

On Tuesday 16th the Women travel to Gander Green Lane to face Sutton United, before two home games back at Champion Hill: against Whyteleafe on Sunday 21st and London City Lionesses Under 21s on Wednesday 31st. Head to dulwichhamletfc. co.uk or keep an eye on social media for additional friendlies as they’re announced.

Meanwhile the close season remains a busy time at the club, with a brand new pitch being laid and the Euros action on offer in the bar. Champion Hill hosted the South East London CAMRA Beer Festival over a cracking weekend at the end of May. Then in June the club and Supporters’ Trust were delighted to feature at the London Pride parade, the highlight of Pride Month.

The 2024/25 season proper gets under way in early August and season tickets are on sale now. Don’t forget that teenagers ‘pay their age’ for a season ticket, while children 12 and under always go free. So gather all things pink ‘n’ blue and we’ll see you at The Hill for all the pre-season summer fun. Up the Hamlet!

Growing A Bee-Friendly Garden

There’s something lovely about a garden alive with bees industriously going about their work. They are also vital for pollinating our food, such as nuts, vegetables and fruit. But since they’re sadly in decline due to a loss of habitats and the use of pesticides, the more we can encourage them into our gardens, the better.

When it comes to the pollinator-friendly plants to provide the nectar (carbohydrates) and pollen (protein) bees need, look for single open flowers where the centre is easily accessible, rather than those with lots of petals. For the summer months opt for daisies, rudbeckia, asters, single dahlias and sunflowers, along with other summer perennials such as verbena, scabious, knautia, holllyhocks and sedum. They are also attracted to the colour purple – my Erysimum ‘Bowles Mauve’ plants are literally covered in a mass of busy bees. Also bear in mind that different bees are attracted to different flowers. For example, bumble bees and slimmer honey bees love the tiny flowers on herbs such as oregano, rosemary, lavender, thyme, nepeta and clover – my clover rich lawn is abuzz! Wool carder bumble bees like plants such as stachys (lamb’s ears) as they collect hairs from the leaves and stems of plants to build their nests while long-tongued bumble bees like tubularshaped flowers such as penstemons and foxgloves. Ensuring you have blooms for every season will

also help attract a range of different bees. The busiest time for bees is the summer, but they tend to emerge from hibernation in March so try to include spring blossom and bulbs such as crocuses and primroses for spring nectar and native wildflower meadows are also appealing for bees. A few winter- flowering plants such as hellebores and winter honeysuckle or clematis are also helpful as some bees emerge from hibernation early in mild winters. For smaller gardens, long flowering plants such as Erysimum ‘Bowles Mauve’ will keep the nectar coming. Tempting as it is, try to void pesticide which is toxic to pollinators.

It’s better to use a natural aphid spray and encourage ladybirds to keep pests down. Also provide food and water for thirsty, hungry bees by making a bee bath with a shallow bowl of water, and if you might find them on the path or lawn looking exhausted, a lid with a spoonful of sugar dissolved in two spoons of water will help revive them.

Finally, create habitats in your garden. Leave a pile of wood, branches and twigs for solitary bees that make individual nest cells for their larvae. Some species such as red mason and leafcutter bees, which pollinate fruit crops, nest in tubes or tunnels. For honey bees, companies such as Bee Kind Hives encourage sustainable bee keeping with hives that need little intervention from beekeepers.

SE21 Food & Drink Preserved Tomatoes

Ingredients

The perfect way to use up a glut of summer tomatoes. They will lend a touch of the Mediterranean to pasta dishes or a summer sandwich.

• 300g cherry or small tomatoes

• Olive oil to brush and store

• Sterilized jar

Servings: 1 Jar

Preparation time: 10 Minutes

Cooking Time: 2-3 Hours

Method

Preheat the oven to 120°C (fan) / gas mark 1. Cut the tomatoes in half and arrange them cut-side up on an oiled baking tray. Lightly brush the tomatoes with olive oil and season with salt. Bake for 2-3 hours, or until they are reduced in size and appear dark and wrinkled. For storage, transfer the tomatoes into a sterilized jar and fill with olive oil until the tomatoes are fully submerged. They can be kept refrigerated for up to two weeks. For longer preservation, place the sealed jars in a large pot of water and heat until it simmers, then let them simmer gently for 45 minutes. Allow the jars to cool in the water. Stored this way, the tomatoes will keep for up to six months in a cool, dark place. After opening, consume the tomatoes within two weeks and store them in the refrigerator.

You can have fun with flavourings, adding herbs like fresh rosemary or thyme, peeled garlic cloves or chilli flakes.

The Energy Exchange & Personal Sustainability

Fitness tips with Leanne Spencer | www.bodyshotperformance.com

This month’ article is all about energy, and the idea of an energy exchange. Why? Well, energy is one of the most essential resources for our own sustainability. This is about the idea of personal sustainability. Other aspects of personal sustainability include values (identity), integrity and social relationships or community.

Let’s Start With Ourselves

We have a big challenge in the world we live in. We know we have to make how we live and the way we use the planet’s resources more sustainable. But how can we be up to that challenge unless we can sustain ourselves first? Personal sustainability is about being healthy, having good values and being connected (in all the different senses). It’s also about having the energy, vitality, and motivation to tackle these problems.

Energy, vitality and motivation are also essential in our day-to-day lives, enabling us to be happy, healthy and resilient. So it’s a win-win situation, we can set ourselves up for success in tackling the world’s meaningful problems by thinking about our personal sustainability, and in particular our energy. Energy is absolutely vital if we are to meet these challenges.

“Energy is the essence of life. Every day you decide how you’re going to use it by knowing what you want and what it takes to reach that goal, and by maintaining focus.” – Oprah Winfrey

The Energy Exchange

Energy is an energy exchange. We give energy away and we take energy from other things. As a professional speaker, I know that speaking is an energy exchange, where I feed off the energy my audience gives me, and the audience feeds off my energy. I ask you to start thinking about this energy exchange point. Where is your energy going? What people, places and things take energy from you? I like to refer to these as energy drains. Are you happy with how your energy is being spent?

Energy Is A Finite Resource

Although energy is a renewable resource, it’s a finite resource. All our energy comes from one place, there’s not a separate pot for work, for family, for

workouts, or socialising. Once depleted, we have to rest and recover. The next thing to ask yourself is, are you happy with where your energy is going? If not, maybe there are some changes you can make.

What Can You Do To Renew Your Energy?

Think about what people, places and things give you energy and light you up, helping renew your energy. I like to call these energy radiators.

What’s Your Energy Exchange?

We are nothing without energy, and most of us would like more of it. So, when you think about your personal sustainability, try and ponder on these big but important questions and what your energy exchange looks like:

• Where is your energy going?

• Are you happy with the direction it’s going in?

• What people, places or things are your energy drains and energy radiators?

• How will you renew the energy that you expend?

We will mount this on grey-board and hole-punch it so you can take it home later to hang in pride of place. After a short break we will help you print an A3 two-colour poster on ‘Albie’ - our 1867 Albion Press and then, if there is time, maybe even a frameable type-sample. You can then take home your bespoke printed goodies in a Bell House Print Room & Bindery tote bag and hopefully want to come back for more! Tickets are £60 per person. Missing Cats II

Pets Corner with Leonie St Clair

What to do when your cat goes missing

Last edition we looked at why cats get lost and established that most cats can temporarily lose their bearings and become displaced and are likely to be hiding out or trapped, closer than expected. A small proportion of cats may be seriously unhappy in their current home and decide to relocate. In these cases, it is advised you see a behaviourist to suss out and try to remedy whatever is going on in your home that has prompted your cat to go on the run. Sometimes another cat is the culprit! For the displaced cat there are a few key tips that can really help the process of relocation and reuniting with your pet. But first, we should do everything to stop the cat wandering in the first place.

Prevention

Neutering - sexual interest is directly related to wandering off familiar territory. Intact cats of either sex are highly motivated to go in search of a mate, get into scraps and expose themselves to other dangers in the environment.

Microchipping - lost cats may end up in rescue or at a vet, where it will almost certainly be scanned for a microchip. A chip makes it more likely the cat is reunited with its owner, but do ensure chips are updated if you move.

Play and interaction - the right sort of interaction with your cat means it will stay closer to home, where all the good stuff happens. A decent diet, scratch posts and interactive games are all vital in giving cats outlets for their hardwired hunting instincts. Bored cats, or cats on a poor diet, are more likely to hunt for food or entertainment.

Fireworks and thunderstorms - exposure to sudden bangs can make most animals panic and run. Try to anticipate firework events and bad weather and keep your cat shut inside for that period.

What to do when your cat is lost

Search your home and garden - Injured or sick cats will hide silently in the strangest of places, so go into every nook and cupboard; look up the chimney, in

the shed and through garden undergrowth. Do not forget to look up trees and on accessible roofs. Ask your neighbours to do the same.

Call your cat - call your cat as you would for feeding time, do not shout or sound anxious. Do this at regular times and then stand and listen carefully and calmly. Give your cat a chance to reach you or to respond. They might be injured and unable to reach you.

Flyers - list the last area your cat was seen, colour of fur, markings, special features, collar description, age, sex, neuter status, and temperament- is the cat normally shy? Provide a photograph, a phone number and microchip status; leaflet all around the neighbourhood, including places like pubs, bus stops and shops.

Report your cat – is missing through organisations like Animal Search UK; Battersea Dogs and Cats Home; National Pet Register and Celia Hammond. Alert the local vets, animal rescue centres and your local R.S.P.C.A branch.

Do not give up - Remember a cat can go for up to twelve days without food and even water, only after this time might they be prepared to come out of hiding in search of sustenance. If your cat does not appear in this time, slowly and systematically expand your search area. Circle areas on a map.

If you find a cat that seems lost - make a paper collar or tag with your number on it asking the owner to phone you. Try not to assume the cat is lost, it may simply be exploring and not lost at all! Cats that are ill or elderly may also seek out other food sources.

Financial Matters

Tax Does Not Have To Be Taxing

It’s probably a surprise to have thought that as we enter the silly season that tax or self-assessment would be the theme for our humour. Tax does not have to be taxing as the adverts tell us! Moreover, tax can be discussed with a sprinkling of humour.

The personal tax return year ends on the 5th April each year and the deadline for the submission of a tax return for over 12 million taxpayers in self-assessment is 31st January. The 301 days (over 9 months) between the year end and the filing deadline often seems most reasonable and sufficient. However, each year thousands of taxpayers manage to miss the deadline handsomely.

Some may miss it for genuine reasons, whilst others do not and then provide a plethora of sob stories that is packaged as an explanation or in truth an excuse. Some of the 10 most entertaining excuses presented in recent years to HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) are as follows:

1) My tax return was on a yacht… which caught fire.

2) I’m not a paperwork orientated person – I always relied on a family member to complete my returns but we have now fallen out.

3) My spouse told me the deadline was 31st March.

4) My accountant has been ill.

5) My spouse left me and took our accountant with them. I am trying to find a new accountant.

6) My dog ate my tax return.

7) My pet goldfish died.

8) My husband ran over my laptop.

9) My child scribbled all over my tax return so I wasn’t able to send it.

10) I couldn’t file my return on time as my wife has been seeing aliens and won’t let me enter the house.

However, an all-time favourite came from of all people, an accountant, “I’ve been too busy submitting my clients’ tax returns“ Whilst all of the

excuses or explanations may be true unfortunately, they are not valid for HMRC purposes. This was clarified in September 2022 by HMRC Director General of Personal Tax, Ruth Owen, when she said “Untidy family members and hungry pets are very unlikely* to be accepted as a legitimate excuse for completing your tax return late.” However, HMRC does recognise the challenges of life and there are several factors that HMRC may consider:

1) Delays related to a disability or mental illness you have.

2) The death of a partner or close relative during the immediate period before the deadline.

3) Service issues with HMRC online services.

4) A fire, flood or theft prevented you from completing your tax return.

5) The tax return was lost, stolen or destroyed within the postal system on its way to HMRC and the post service is to blame.

Although HMRC does and can recognise the challenges of life, self-assessment taxpayers must recognise that after almost 30 years the excuses for not completing and filing their tax return has become wholly unpalatable.

To avoid the penalties associated with the late or non-submission of self-assessment tax returns, taxpayers should consider starting the process today. The best time to have started was yesterday but yesterday has passed.

The process should only be a challenge to those in self-assessment for the first time. Existing self-assessment taxpayers should already know the requirements.

As a reminder to help taxpayers recall their requirements, there is a financial penalty of £100 if the submission deadline of 31st January is missed. In addition, after three monthly intervals there are additional late filing penalty triggers. In addition, any late payment of income tax will also attract late payment interest charges.

To avoid tax becoming taxing and costly, perhaps the silly season is a good time for taxpayers to begin their self-assessment tax return planning and preparation process.

Friday 26 July: The

Creative Arts Club: CyanotypesWorking with Summer Light

10am-12.30pm. Making cyanotypes has become an annual event at the Creative Arts Club. Come along and immerse yourselves in the wonderful gardens at Bell House and create a collection of beautiful blue prints using nature, sunlight, water - and your own creativity!

Cyanotype printing is a form of contact photography using an object placed directly onto light sensitive paper which is then exposed to sunlight. The simplest of objects can make a hauntingly beautiful image in beautiful “cyan” blue and white. You will use sunlight, water, nature and your own creativity - it is as simple as that! You will each be given your own bundle of assorted coated papers plus some cotton fabric to use for this workshop, sealed in a special photo sensitive envelope.

We will take inspiration and even some samples from the Bell House gardens to use for the prints but you are all welcome to bring objects from home to try. Good examples of the sort of thing to bring would be: black and white negatives (large), lace pieces, an intricate stencil, small pressed plants, - anything flattish that has interesting pattern allowing light to shine through.

Making cyanotypes is a kind of magic - once you have made your first print you won’t want to stop! Working with direct sunlight is always best, but at this time of year there is enough UV light to make prints whatever the weather.

No experience is necessary. All materials and refreshments will be provided. Please bring an apron with you to this class plus something to carry your prints home with you (NB some may still be damp).

Saturday 27 July: Tapestry

Weaving: Beginners & Improvers Class 10am-4pm

This class is for beginners, those who have enjoyed a taster class, as well as a refresher for anyone returning to weaving. Learn to prepare your tapestry frame and get to grips with plain weave – then try simple and effective geometric shapes and practice blending colours. During the day you’ll discover tips and tricks to improve your weaving. At the end of the class, you’ll learn how to remove your work from the frame and finish off securely.

Tapestry weaving allows you to slow down a little and be creative with an art form that plays with colour and design. It’s the perfect antidote for busy people with busy lives and is easy to continue at home once you have the basic skills.

Bridget Lane is an award-winning tapestry weaver. Her colourful contemporary pieces are a response to the seemingly mundane, a way of reinterpreting the world. Her work has been shown in exhibitions in the UK and Australia, and she is a selected Member of the Society of Designer Craftsmen.

Ripe Old Age

Practical Advice for Navigating Later Life

Tips for Managing Hoarding Disorder

It is not uncommon for us to visit elderly clients who have a persistent difficulty in parting with possessions, including those with no value. Almost all of us will have some clutter or untidiness at home, but in extreme cases, where all (or parts) of the home become unusable, this can be a sign of a mental health condition known as “hoarding disorder”. Such excessive hoarding can pose a fire risk or create unsanitary conditions for the client and/or our visiting carers.

The root cause of hoarding disorder is unknown, but there is undoubtably a link with dementia. Clients living with dementia commonly show anxiety and confusion. They can struggle to organise their lives and, in some cases, accumulate great piles of clutter. Growing emotional attachment to certain objects may be apparent, possibly due to a desire to maintain their sense of identity and control.

Excessive hoarding can create serious challenges for caregivers and family members. It may be difficult to access all or part of the home. And where access is possible, it may be difficult to navigate with multiple trip hazards. Effective cleaning may become difficult if not impossible.

Like us, some readers may have experienced frustration trying to address hoarding behaviour, as your loved one (or our client) resists and becomes agitated during any suggested decluttering.

Supporting clients (or loved ones) with dementia, requires a compassionate and patient approach. We need to remain mindful hoarding is not simply a matter of stubbornness or laziness, but is a common habit due to the cognitive and emotional challenges posed by dementia.

When helping with decluttering, first and foremost, we take care to maintain our client’s sense of control and dignity. We involve them in small steps to make gradual improvements. Any removal of items is limited to those necessary to eliminate safety and health hazards. Some clients enjoy rummaging, and this can be made a productive activity. Getting agreement to dispose of items can be easier where the client understands the item will be given to a charity, church, family member, etc. We recommend removing any discarded items immediately as clients may later rummage through waste bins and bring the item back into their home. Lastly we consider ways to reduce more clutter accumulating such as junk mail (by placing a sticker on the letterbox).

Clients can also reduce catalogues and junk mail by opting out on www.dmachoice.org and www.catalogchoice.org. Michael Scott

Volunteer Drivers Needed

For 30 years, Link Age Southwark has eased loneliness and reduced social isolation for local older people and those living with a diagnosis of dementia. Today, they urgently need more volunteer drivers like Mark. Every Thursday, he collects four older women, from very different backgrounds, driving them to and from singing sessions run by the charity.

“I enjoy listening to them chat when I’m driving them. Hearing about their lives and families is fascinating – they may have limited mobility now, but one of them told me that at 18 she’d been a long jump champion!

Alcohol Awareness Week Understanding Alcohol Harm

This year Alcohol Awareness Week runs from the 1st to 7th of July and the theme is 'Understanding alcohol harm’. Here we look at alcohol consumption and health.

All Around Us

Sometimes we forget that alcohol plays a big part in the lives of many of us because it is something that our social lives revolve around. Eating out, going to a party, celebrations all include alcohol. Sensible drinking where we drink small amounts infrequently poses fewer problems but when the regularity and amount increase so do the associated problems.

Problems Caused By Drinking Too Much

The excessive intake of alcohol over the long term can cause major health problems and the development of chronic diseases. These include:

• High blood pressure.

• Heart disease

• Stroke

• Liver disease

• Digestive problems

• Cancer of the breast, mouth, throat, oesophagus, voice box, liver, colon, & rectum

Recommended

Alcohol Intake

The NHS officially recommends that we drink no more than 14 units of alcohol a week and that we should spread this across 3 days or more. Fourteen units is around six medium (175ml) glasses of wine, or 6 pints of fairly strong (4%) beer.

Men & women

Men and women react differently to alcohol consumption and whilst men tend to drink higher quantities of beer the physiology of women means they absorb alcohol more slowly and metabolise it more gradually than men, so they will feel the effects for a longer time and at a greater intensity.

Ways To Cut Back

• Get organised – make a plan, create a chart, download an app. This way you will be able to record and remember what you have drunk, and plan ways to avoid drinking too much.

• Lower alcoholic drinks – why not gradually lower the amount you are drinking? If you drink strong beer, change to light beer. Avoid spirits and chose lighter wines. Why not try some of the many brilliant low or alcohol-free alternatives – they taste great?

• Consider different ways to socialise – walks or hikes with friends make a healthy alternative to a night in the pub. Go and see a film and enjoy pop and popcorn. Meet up for coffee or afternoon tea.

• Avoid rounds – if you are out in a pub, buy your own drinks that way you won’t feel obliged or pressured to drink too much.

• Make a budget – drinking is expensive so make a budget, set a limit to how much you will spend when you go out.

• Be kind to yourself – if you have a blip, don’t worry, just start again.

The Benefits Of Drinking Less

Cutting back makes you feel better straight away, you will feel better when you wake up, feel less tired through the day, your skin will look healthier and so will you bank balance. In the long-term you might enjoy lower blood pressure, lower risk of a stroke, lower cholesterol levels and you might even lose weight. So, this Alcohol Awareness Week, why not think about reducing the amount you drink ?
