Welcome May turned out to be a great month. The weather was a bit hit and miss, but for the Dulwich Festival Fair, it was definitely a hit. At the time of writing, it was the hottest day of the year so far! Goose Green was packed with everyone having a great time. The donkey rides were as popular as ever. All the stallholders enjoyed it too. The weather stayed dry for both weekends of the Artist’s Open Houses, which were well supported again this year. Here’s to next year! Lawrence Roullier White has cocktails on his mind, see his special cocktail selection on our shopping page on 26. The Last Word this month is a joint venture from Susan Mumford and Chris King, co-authors of Art is your Life. Make it your Living. Find out more page 32. We have six fabulous pages of local events, starting on page 8. SE21 is the only place to find out what is happening in the area. If you are running an event in the area, please do e-mail details through for a free listing. Remember that the events that miss our print deadline will be found at www.arounddulwich.co.uk as will many other stories. Until next time.

Bouillabaisse Method
We will be serving this lovely Bouillabaisse at our June East Dulwich Supper Club, if in doubt ask your fishmonger for advice on the most seasonal fish to use.
1) Firstly, heat the oil in a large pan, add the fennel, celery and carrot and fry for until softened but not coloured. Add the chili and garlic and cook for two minutes until soft. 2) Add the spices and fry for two minutes until fragrant. Add the tomatoes, tomato purée, saffron, white wine and fish bones. Bring to the boil and then turn it down and let it simmer for roughly 1 hour. 3) Strain the stock through a fine sieve, pressing down firmly to extract some of the vegetables. Return the strained stock to the pan and keep warm until ready to serve. 4) Return the pan to the heat and bring to a simmer. Add the parsley, tarragon, prawns, fish and squid and cook gently for five minutes. Divide the cooked fish between four serving bowls and ladle the liquid over the top. 5) Should be served with Crotons and Rouille.

Hectic Host
Outside Dining
W
ith summer almost upon us those of us that are lucky enough to have some outside space can think about moving the party outside. Many casual drinks parties are impromptu, taking advantage of some sudden sun or a chance visit, but you need to be able to offer your guests a bite to eat. I am always impressed how in France the host disappears for 10 minutes and reappears with trays of delicious snacks, Roullier White’s two French colleagues Stella Giugiu and Solène Falières share some secrets from the kitchens of French Hectic Hosts. Warm goat’s cheese with honey on toast. Take some bread, a day old bread is fine, lightly toast one side under the grill. Remove from grill and spread with creamy goat’s cheese, pop back under grill and cook under the cheese is melted, drizzle with honey and sprinkle with thyme or black pepper and serve. Basil tuna rillettes. Take a tin of very good quality tuna, drain the fish and flake with a fork into a bowl, add some cream cheese, a dash of paprika, a squeeze of lemon juice, salt and pepper and top with some torn bail leaves. Spoon into small ramekins or spread on char grilled toasted bread with aperitifs. Smoked salmon & ricotta toasts. Chop smoked salmon, this is ideal if you have some left over from brunch or breakfast and mix in a bowl with Ricotta, add some lemon juice and dill and work into a smooth paste. Spread on small toasted circles of French bread. Verrines are a very popular party dish across all of France, small portions are made in little glasses, and are left scattered for guests to pick up. Chop some endive and drop into the bottom of each vessel, peel and pith some orange and break into small chucks, saving any juice, place the orange on the endive and top with some crumbled goat’s cheese, mix the leftover juice with a dash of olive oil and pour over each pot. Serve with a tea spoon. Another super-easy version is a crab & pear verrine, chop some pear

and mix with some flaked white crab meat, stir in some lime juice and a little some fresh herbs. You probably won’t need salt but do season with black pepper; although it is somewhat out of fashion in the UK and almost forgotten, white pepper works a treat with all types of shellfish. It has a slightly more aromatic and earthy quality that works with the saltiness of the fish. White pepper is a common ingredient in France when you do not want dark flecks to show in your sauces or dishes. It is used mainly in the kitchen rather than on the table as a condiment. Spoon into glasses and top of with a little more lime juice and a dash of olive oil. Soup de Champagne is a traditional punchlike drink that is served chilled in the summer. To a bottle of champagne – or fizzy wine – add a cup of Cointreau, a cup of squeezed lemon and a cup of squeezed orange juice and stir in sugar to taste.

Garden Talk
June Gardening June is a busy time in the garden. Here’s how to keep on top of it all…
Watering and feeding… Give the garden a good soak once or twice a week in warm weather, concentrating on newly planted shrubs and trees. Containers can need watering daily when it’s hot. Water in the morning or evening and use ‘grey’ (wash water), a water butt and an irrigation system – much more efficient than a hose - where possible. Apply or renew a mulch of well-rotted manure to cut down on weeding and watering– ideally after a downpour, as mulch keeps water out, as well as in. Feed flowering pot plants weekly with liquid fertiliser and hungry plants like sweet peas and clematis a mid season boost of general purpose organic fertiliser such as blood fish and bone, and water in.
Pruning and tidying… Prune evergreen topiary and hedges. Trim about 5cm of new growth from box (buxus) with pruning shears. Prune spring flowering shrubs such as weigela, philadelphus and deciduous magnolias. Follow with a general purpose organic fertiliser and mulch. Deadhead spent flowers of plants like roses – it’ll really prolong the flowering period. Snip off browning heads with secateurs to a bud or leaf below. Cut hardy geraniums back with shears for a second flush and pick, pick, pick sweet peas to keep them coming (providing your house with a constant supply of fresh and beautifully scented flower). Pull out annual weeds by hand, or with a hoe, while they’re small. Dig out perennials like dandelions from lawns or beds –any roots left can regrow. Cut down dead foliage on bulbs - around six weeks after flowering and ideally when it’s gone yellow. Until then they should be watered and fed to prepare them for next year. Lift and divide iris clumps after flowering. Stake tall perennials like phlox and hollyhocks to avoid them collapsing or being battered by rain. I prefer using cherry sticks (for sale at Shannon’s Garden Centre) than bamboos as I feel they blend better , or look out 16 | SE21 - June 2016
for more ornamental supports such as the rusted iron ones (Alleyn Park Garden Centre stock a beautiful selection). Tie in climbing and rambling roses to avoid them becoming a mess - ideally horizontally to encourage more flowers. Prune back Clematis montana into its allotted space, as well as honeysuckle and other vigorous climbers.
And the rest… Look out for slugs and snails, particularly after rain, and around new shoots. Pick them off or use organic slug pellets or beer traps (jars of beer sunk into the soil to attract and drown slugs!). Squeeze off greenfly infestations with your fingers or squirt them with soapy water. Mow the lawn once or twice a week - the less grass taken off each time the healthier it’ll be. Raise the blades if it’s dry. Feed the lawn with a liquid or slow release fertiliser such as chicken manure pellets. Ensure newly laid grass doesn’t dry out. Plant out runner beans, courgettes, and tomatoes – which like a sunny wall and lots of water. Surround ripening strawberries with straw to keep them off the soil and protect fruit bushes with netting. Pick elderflowers if you have any in your garden , for a summery cordial, just perfect with your (well earned) G&T, trust me. Don’t forget to check out the NGS garden Festival and visit local gardens that open their doors for charity, a fabulous event. Barbara Samitier - Garden Designer www.barbarasamitiergardens.co.uk

Financial Matters
Do you know who is calling you?
I
t was a Saturday afternoon about 12.25pm when I answered a mobile telephone call. The caller was a known GP client. However, today her voice was somewhat distraught. The source of this distress soon became clear. On Friday evening she returned home to an answerphone message, asking her to call a telephone number regarding a tax matter. The GP duly called the number and was greeted by a forceful male who advised her, “you have violated the tax laws and have an outstanding tax bill of £2,999 from 2012. You are required to make payment within 45 minutes and do not disconnect this call, otherwise the police will call at your home to obtain payment and seize your bank account." Despite several attempts by the GP to interject, the forceful male would not relent. When the GP suggested that she would pay via the usual HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) online portal, the male voice told her, “this was not possible and payment must be made via a bill payment voucher.” It was at this juncture whilst listening to his tirade that she called me from her mobile telephone. I interrupted her tale of woe and advised her to hang up and told her that this was a scam. Surprisingly, she was oblivious to these scams. However, the threatening experience of the scammer had left the GP traumatised. Her experience was just a few days after the courts had sentenced eight fraudsters for a similar telephone scam against elderly people. To reassure her I checked her income tax position on our HMRC portal followed by a quick call to the HMRC Self-Assessment team. Unsurprisingly, both checks confirmed, she did not have any income tax arrears. Unfortunately, Action Fraud, our ally in fraud prevention and detection, were unavailable until Monday 9:00am. Perhaps, they presume fraudsters only work weekdays, 9:00am - 5:00pm. Further investigation into the telephone number that was left, revealed a catalogue of similar tales had been reported. On reflection, perhaps a GP should have known better. Why? With a father just recovering from a heart attack and a niece recently diagnosed with cancer, it is easy to see how preoccupation with life’s challenges knocked the GP off her guard.
28 | SE21 - June 2016
Sad as this tale is, plus the recent jailing of eight fraudsters, these fraudulent practices are becoming increasingly common behaviour. For the benefit of readers, I will break with protocol and share the scammers’ telephone number, 0203 129 2543. Any calls from this number should not be returned but reported to Action Fraud, 0300 123 2040. It should be noted that HMRC will never: • demand payment within 45mins or any such ridiculous time • use terms such as ‘violation of tax laws’ • suggest the police will attend your home tell you not to disconnect their call. Furthermore, for anyone yet to receive the selection of fake HMRC emails, they should be aware that HMRC emails will never: • notify you of a tax rebate • offer you a repayment • ask you to disclose personal information such as your full address, postcode, Unique Taxpayer Reference or details of your bank account • give a non HMRC personal email address to send a response to • ask for financial information such as specific figures or tax computations, unless you’ve given them prior consent and you have formally accepted the risks • have attachments, unless you have given prior consent and you have formally accepted the risks • provide a link to a secure log-in page or a form asking for information - instead they will ask you to log on to your online account to check for information. As a simple word of warning, never disclose any personal or financial information to any caller for any reason or make any payment to any caller unless you are 100% certain of their identity.

“I have been advertising in SE22 and SE23 magazines for over 8 years and find it not only a great read, but also a really useful tool for local marketing and a proven way of attracting local business. I can highly recommend Angela and SE magazines and I remain a loyal client!” Peter Bennison, P. M Bennison Heating Ltd ‘’As a relatively new business set-up, I have advertised in two editions of SE22; and as a result have received five new clients (four direct, and one referral). I’m very happy with this response, and Angela provides an excellent, efficient service, and couldnyt be more helpful! Many thanks.’’ Lynne Walsh, Flourish Gardening “I recently had double glazed windows fitted in my bedroom, a job very well done in every way by Bespoke Windows. They look pleasing and work very well. I found this company in SE22 Magazine, a useful and informative local monthly publication.” Dotty Todd “SE21 and SE22 magazines have been great for us in connecting with the local community and attracting people to our events. More importantly our ads have brought forward volunteers who are interested in becoming befriender, group helper or driver – roles we need to fill more and more to help alleviate isolation and loneliness in older people of Southwark. Thank you SEMags for all your support – keep up the good work!” Jennie Linnett, Dulwich Helpline & Southwark Churches Care.

The Prehistoric Garden was funded through Tesco’s Bags of Help campaign, and voted for by Tesco shoppers in the London Borough of Lewisham.

The Last Word – Susan Mumford & Chris King Where are you to be found on a Saturday? Out and about in Dulwich (doing shopping at independent food shops), in Central London or, in Susan’s case, cafés, markets and bars in Brooklyn or Manhattan about a quarter of the time!
Cafe, pub or bar? Pub.
The best kept secret... …is a secret.
When we want to relax... We find an area that is ace for photography, and get lost in the experience (noting that Susan is also a photographer, albeit on the quiet).
What is your favourite shop? Co-authors of the new book, Art is your life. Make it your living., Susan Mumford & Chris King, have jointly participated in this edition of ‘The Last Word’. Their signing at Dulwich Books takes place on 28th June in the evening; see booking details below. Susan is an entrepreneur, mentor, speaker and author. She founded the Association of Women Art Dealers (AWAD), a non-profit trade network with members around the globe. She also runs a social enterprise called Be Smart About Art, which helps art world professionals thrive in a changing industry. Chris is an art, documentary and event photographer. His works are regularly exhibited in London and the USA, with pieces held in private collections in both countries. His images are on display in the permanent collection at The Frontline Club, London.
In West Dulwich, it’s hands down COOK. (nevermind the fact that we both love cooking, too!)
If money was no object.. We’d have our own house in Dulwich with a Tesla in the garage, an apartment on Long Island City, New York, and a small pad in Venice (on the Guiddeca).
The books we’re reading at the moment.. Susan’s diving into Nelson Mandella’s Long Walk To Freedom and Chris is reading Gun Baby Gun by Iain Overton.
Our perfect holiday.. Involves a lot of rest, cooking and photography, with a regularly frequented location being the Jurassic Coast in Dorset and Devon.
How long have you lived in the area? 3 ∞ years
What brought you here? Artist friends kept trying to persuade us to try out the area, so when an opportunity to move arose, we took it.
What do you most value about the area? The independent shops and sense of community.
Do you know your neighbours? Yes (some at least).
Your favourite place for a night out? A quiet pub. (The only exception to noise is live music played at a reasonable volume.) 32 | SE21 - June 2016
