Welcome to SE21 Last month I mentioned that life seemed to be returning to almost normal. As I write this, there is talk of local lockdowns in London and the “second wave” of Covid. I really hope that we can manage not to go in to lockdown again; we will see. Our events pages start on page 6 this month with five full pages of online and actual events you can go to. I am delighted to see more events happening in person, but please do check whether the event is going ahead, as guidelines may change in the coming days. Remember to our visit our website www.arounddulwich.co.uk as events are updated daily. There are also extra articles that I couldn’t fit in to the magazine! Janine Winslaw discusses how to grow your own applies in Garden Talk this month, see p12. Suzanne James has another wonderful recipe this month. Why not try to make the Honey Roasted Fig, Almond and Pistachio Tart? See full details on page 14. We usually have The Last Word interview in the magazine but had a last minute pull out. If you are interested in featuring in SE21, please do contact me. You don’t have to have a business to feature, but you do need to live and/or work in the area. Until next time, take good care.

ith only thirty people allowed at a “life cycle” ceremony at the moment, you might be tempted to put off your Big Day. Tamara Burgess thinks that would be a mistake… We as a tribe need our festivities, celebrations and rituals – what can we do? We have to embrace “the shock of the new” – or the “unprecedented times” (if I hear that one more time, I might scream!). We can’t continue to mourn the fact that we can’t have our lovely big parties. We have to be discerning and specific - maybe we need to throw a different light onto things – What is important about your wedding day, civil partnership vows, welcoming of your baby to the world – or any other lovely thing you can decide to celebrate? Initially it is the two or three of you. It is the family units who have decided to come together and celebrate their new journey; the renewal of your promises or having come through a challenging time.

You have about twenty-five people to play with (because I count as one and am absolutely essential to the magic of your day!) So, to feel we have done things properly, we need witnesses – how to choose them? Who is going to be in your gang? The first thing we do is park the fear of upsetting people. We have to accept, and so do they, that tough decisions must be made. Great Uncle Stan and Auntie Glad that you last saw at Christmas 1990, and who gave you some out of date toffees, have really forfeited the right to attend. You can meet old school mates another time. Do you really need your work mates? Don’t you see them on Zoom every day? See how easy this is getting? It’s like boiling down a sauce to make it richer. Who is absolutely necessary to you – apart from the person you are going to share vows with? This takes clever thinking but is perfectly possible. What we have to do is re-frame our feelings. It is a compromise, but it shouldn’t stop us from continuing to celebrate what makes being human so special. You may choose your family, your best friend (and no, their partner doesn’t have to attend) – but whoever it is must have earned their place. This crisis will not be with us forever; life will return to something we recognise – I just don’t believe we will never be able to have parties again! So, don’t postpone your important celebration. Wear the dress, the penguin suit, forget the bridesmaids (sorry!), watch Mum cry under her enormous hat, make those vows! Save your hard-earned cash and plan another party for your first or second anniversary – then all of your mates will know whether you actually kept those promises you made!

Tamara Burgess is a certified Civil Celebrant living in Lewisham, who conducts weddings, civil partnerships, baby namings, vow renewals and funerals. Please visit: https://www.tamaraburgess.co.uk/ SE21 - October 2020 | 5

11-1pm (only 5 places, so 6 people in total). One of the participants on last months’ street art walk was Susan, who invited me (Amanda) to look at her wall on Bawdale Road, corner of Fellbrigg Road, just ripe for a mural. Co-incidentally at this time, I had been in correspondence with Berlin based female street artist, Mad C, to repaint her Belair Park tennis court wall which constantly gets vandalised as soon as it gets repaired. So a lightbulb moment happened, as I realised Susan’s wall was pretty much the same dimensions as the Belair wall, and before you knew it, everything fell into place. The neighbours all came out to see Mad C, with help from Remi Rough, on August 29th and were delighted to see this interpretation of Van Huysum’s Flowers in a Vase emerge beautifully with inspired sweeps of the can in vibrant abstract lines with beautiful details of Dutch tulips, ladybird and butterfly.

You may know Mad C ‘s 2015 mural by the Plough pub car park, based on Venetia Digby on her Deathbed, part of Ingrid Beazley’s Street Art/ Fine Art project. www.dulwichoutdoorgallery. co.uk. Mad C is also one of many international artists creating amazing artworks throughout September in the London Mural Festival. I shall be leading a small group walk including the recent pieces on October 4th. Street Art Walk Dulwich, tickets via Evenbrite 8

This means we are now in a position to offer more private medical services at the clinic, which on chatting with many of my patients, was something they felt strongly would benefit them. At the start of lockdown, I had to work on securing the business financially as best as I could. As we began to settle into the new normal, I started to look at offering virtual consultations. Before lockdown, these were considered awkward and more of an exception. However, we are lucky that our clinic software has allowed us to offer a virtual secure platform for private consultations throughout. This is now how we offer all our aesthetic consultations and indeed how we will offer all our medical consultations unless there is a specific need for a face to face consultation.

WHAT SERVICES WILL YOU BE OFFERING?

M

ayoni Gooneratne is an ex-NHS surgeon and is the founder and medical director of Human Health by The Clinic (by Dr Mayoni), with clinics in Honor Oak Park and Crystal Palace. She offers aesthetic skincare services and now has added medical services to the offering. Mayoni is passionate about giving control back to her patients when it comes to their own health and wellness by supporting them through their Human Health Journey.

HOW WAS LOCKDOWN FOR YOU? Like everyone, it was a bewildering, panic stricken time. I naturally wanted to know my children and elderly parents were going to be safe. As a business owner, I needed to safely mothball my company as much as possible, and then focus on how to move forward and survive. I wanted to return to the NHS and had made myself available to our local trusts. However personally it was a very difficult time for me to decide what to do for the best. Over the period of lockdown, I looked further into how The Clinic could serve our community better. So I decided to become registered with the Care Quality Commission (CQC), which is a process I had started a while ago, but lockdown was the final nudge I

We are all about wellness rather than illness too – so we want to ensure you have an insight into your current wellness with Well Woman and Well Man checks. We also will continue to promote and support our patients with access to understanding your hormonal health with our BHRT offering. Our BODYFIT programme is a medical weight loss injection plan that helps support patients who would like to lose weight with lots of support from our Health Coach. And of course our Functional Nutritionist offers you preventative nutritional and supplement solutions to your problems too.

THE FUTURE? Covid is something that sadly is going to be with us for a while now. We hope that the medical and aesthetic services we are offering will help our patients truly look and feel their best and healthiest! I am also delighted that whilst this is a private healthcare service, I truly believe healthcare is for all. We will be supporting local healthcare projects that will help patients who cannot use our services. I am also delighted to have been asked to be patron of Their Future Today, a UK charity that helps Sri Lankan orphanages by reuniting children with their rightful family, amongst other amazing work they do! Do get in touch if you would like to speak to a specialist on 0208 699 9496, or email reception@drmayoni.co.uk or book online www.drmayoni.co.uk. SE21 - October 2020 | 11

Grow Your Own Apples Garden Talk with Janine Winlaw | Instagram @janinewinlaw

T

here’s nothing more satisfying, tasty and healthy than picking your own home grown apples. And with pretty pink tinged blossom in spring and autumn fruit, an apple tree adds an attractive and romantic feel to a garden. Here’s what you need to know. Apple trees can act as a focal point in a lawn or can provide structure in borders. Apples are grafted onto rootstocks producing different sized trees so there’s an apple tree to fit every size of garden. The most vigorous rootstocks, M111 and M106, make large standard or semi standard trees to sit under, M26 are semi dwarfing (around 3m) and dwarfing rootstocks M9 and M27 make smaller trees and can be trained and pruned into espaliers, fans or even grown in containers. Apples can also be trained into cordons, single stems with short side shoots – I’ve seen a row of these making an attractive and productive hedge. And step overs, condons grown horizontally around 45cm high, are perfect for lining a path or edging a bed. There are thousands of different apple varieties to choose from flowering and cropping at different times. There are six pollinating groups and its best to plant at least two apples from the same or adjacent groups so that they can pollinate each other. If there is an apple tree in a neighbouring garden, that may help too.

Early Varieties • Discovery. A popular disease resistant red dessert apple • Sunrise. One of the best early apples, red with a long season. • Worcester Pearmain. An early sweet red apple that crops in September and October.

Mid Season Varieties • Jupiter. Similar to Cox’s Orange Pippin but larger and redder in colour than Cox. • Lord Lambourne. A traditional English apple with crisp, juicy and sweet apples. Delicious!

Late Varieties • Blenheim Orange. A heritage variety. A lovely classic English variety with a distinctive flavour. 12 | SE21 - October 2020

• Topaz. A crisp, sharp dessert apple with red flushed skin. • Braeburn. A popular sweet, crisp apple. • Elstar One of the best modern apples with an excellent fruity flavour and good keeping quality. • Spartan. A popular heavy cropping dark red dessert apple. You can buy trees bare root between November and early March, or in containers for planting the rest of the year. Plant your tree in a warm position with free draining soil that gets around 6 hours of sun. Keep their bases weed free and mulch in the early years. Naomi Slade believes even small gardens can have an orchard. Check out her book: An Orchard Odyssey for more ideas.

Kesar & Co SOLICITOR S Do you have problems with knotweed or poorly fitted cavity walls? Cavity Wall Claims

In 2015, a survey of 250,000 residential properties with cavity wall insulation found mould, condensation, damp, poor heat retention or damage to the walls in a very large proportion of these homes. Further examination established that many, often those built by the local authorities and their contractors, had the cavity walls incorrectly fitted which caused significant problems and, in many cases, made properties unfit for human habitation. The issues with cavity wall insulation can often take a few years to fully come to light, but legal action should be considered within the limitation period of six years. In the first instance, you should write to the company setting out the details of your complaint and the steps required in order to resolve the issue. You will, in most cases, need to appoint a surveyor to assist in identifying the extent of the problem and write a report. Assuming that the installing firm is still trading, you should approach them and request that the cavity wall and insulation be re-installed in accordance with the appropriate building standards. You could also seek compensation for the associated issues such as damage to furniture, redecoration and treatment for health problems. Whilst this may be difficult with construction companies, it should be easier to find a mutually acceptable solution with local authorities. Reputable energy suppliers should have registered a guarantee for the cavity wall insulation with the Cavity Insulation Guarantee Agency (CIGA). However, there are often limits on payouts under the guarantee, which your bill for rectification works may far exceed.

It can reach heights of up to four meters and its roots can stretch three meters deep and extend around seven meters in all directions. Japanese Knotweed damage can be severe. It is very difficult and expensive to remove once it is on your land. Even if the smallest piece of root is left in the soil the weed can re grow very quickly and occupy large areas making them unavailable for any other purpose. Its root system is very strong, so strong that they can break through concrete and may cause serious damage to buildings and drainage system if not kept under control. The properties most at risk are those close to railway tracks; rivers; construction sites etc. In some areas companies such as Network Rail have actively planted Japanese Knotweed to sure up embankments and other areas of land. Presence of the Japanese knotweed on your land is likely to amount to encroachment and give rise to a nuisance claims equally where the defendant is a public body, company or private individual. The effect is the same: the presence of Japanese knotweed amounts to an interference with quiet enjoyment and is actionable in nuisance without physical damage. As with cavity wall claims, if your property is affected by the Japanese knotweed spreading from the neighbouring land, you should take photographic evidence and consider obtaining expert advice. This will help you negotiate the remedial action and damages with the owner of the land from which this nuisance plant has spread onto your property. In the absence of a response or remedy to your problem, you should obtain independent legal advice. Kesar & Co Solicitors 27 London Road, Bromley, BR1 1DG 020 8181 3100 contact@kesarco.co.uk www.kesarco.co.uk

Japanese Knotweed Claims

Another problem affecting many properties, particularly those located in the vicinity of rail tracks and affected by Japanese knotweed. This is a fast growing and invasive plant. It can grow anywhere, has distinctive red stems and flat leaves. SE21 - October 2020 | 13

Honey Roasted Fig, Almond & Pistachio Tart Recipes from Suzanne James | www.suzannejames.co.uk

W

e are lucky that our allotment is on a south facing slope, which, when combined with London’s micro climate allows us to grow wonderful figs, one of my favourite fruits. We have had a wonderful harvest this year, and I wanted to share this lovely tart recipe with you. Remember, figs are rich in minerals including potassium, calcium, magnesium, iron and copper and a good source of antioxidant vitamins A and K that contribute to health and wellness, so you don’t need to feel too guilty about indulging!

Ingredients • • • • • • • • •

500g fresh sweet pastry at room temperature 8 ripe black figs, stalks trimmed 1 tbsp clear honey (use local if you can!) 200g softened unsalted butter 200g golden caster sugar 200g packet of ground almonds 2 medium egg yolks 25g peeled pistachio nuts Cream or Pistachio Ice Cream to serve

Method: 1) Pre-heat the oven to 1800C/Gas Mark 6. 2) Roll out the pastry on a lightly floured surface and use to line a shallow loose bottomed 25cm quiche tin. Make sure the pastry comes above the rim. Chill for 30 minutes. 3) Cut the figs in half lengthways and put them cut side up on a roasting tray. Pour honey over the figs and roast for 10 minutes until just soft and golden. Keep the juices in the tray – you will need these. 4) With a fork prick the base of the chilled pastry case all over, then line with greaseproof paper and fill with baking beans. Bake blind for 15 minutes 14 | SE21 - October 2020

at 1700C. Remove the paper and beans and bake for a further 5-10 minutes until the pastry is golden. Remove from the oven and reduce the temperature to 1300C / Gas Mark 2. Leave the pastry case to cool slightly before filling. 5) Cream butter and sugar in a food processor or with an electric beater until smooth and pale. Tip in the ground almonds and whizz briefly to combine. Add egg yolks and 1 tbsp of the reserved fig juice and whizz again until smooth. Spread evenly over the pastry case. 6) Gently press the figs cut side up into the almond mixture and sprinkle with the pistachio nuts. 7) Bake for 1 ¼ hours or until its golden all over. Leave in the tin for 30 minutes, then remove sides and transfer on its base to a wire rack to cool. 8) Cut and serve with cream, or (trust me on this) add an extra dimension to this tart and serve with Dolcelatte instead!

In Season This Month Fruits & Nuts - Apples, blackberries, chestnuts, elderberries, figs, grapes, pears, quince, tomatoes, walnuts. Chanterelles, chestnuts, horse, oyster, parasol, puffballs, giant shaggy ink caps and summer truffle mushrooms Vegetables & Herbs - Beetroot, borlotti beans, broccoli, cabbages, carrots, cauliflower, celeriac, celery, chard, courgettes, fennel, kale, kohlrabi, leeks, onions, peppers, potatoes, pumpkins & squash, rocket, salsify, scorzonera, spinach, turnips Meat & Game - Duck, wild goose, grouse, guinea fowl, hare, mallard, partridge, pheasant, rabbit, venison, wood pigeon Fish & Shellfish - Cod, crab, eels, lobster, mackerel, mussels, oysters, prawns, scallops, sea bass, sprats, squid, brown & rainbow trout Going Out Of Season - Aubergine, beetroot, butternut squash, chicory, cobnut, damsons, elderberries, fennel, fig, globe artichoke, lamb, mackerel, pear, plums, radish, raspberry, rocket, sweetcorn, watercress

Breath Work

Fitness tips with Leanne Spencer | www.bodyshotperformance.com

The Energising, Restorative And Relaxing Properties Of Breath Work This month it’s all about the breath. One thing I’ve been doing to help feel recharged and restored is breath work. I’ve talked about this a before, the energising, restorative and relaxing properties of breath work.

Wim Hof Method I’ve more recently been playing around with a methodology called the Wim Hof Method. Dutch extreme athlete Wim Hof got his nickname “The Iceman” by breaking a number of records related to cold exposure including: climbing Mount Kilimanjaro in shorts, running a half marathon the sympathetic nervous system, waking up the above the Arctic Circle barefoot, and standing in body of a little bit. As well as doing it to feel a a container while covered with ice cubes for more bit more energised, I’ve also been finishing it off than 112 minutes. Fear or Frustration? Pets Corner with Leonie St Clair | www.londondogstraining.co.uk

Is my aggressive dog fearful or frustrated? Fear aggression in dogs is a common concept, not just within the field of behavioural science but also among the wider, pet owning public. Indeed, it has become so pervasive that it is now being suggested that the label of fear aggression may often be misused. Part of the misunderstanding has arisen from the drive to correct outdated ideas that expressions of aggression arise from a dog’s desire to ‘dominate‘ and control its environment. The notion that most aggressive behaviour is driven by fear not dominance has become more commonly accepted. However, less widely understood is the role of frustration. Most people are now aware that fear and anxiety send stress levels up so that the body enters a state of fight, flight or sometimes paralysis. Fearful dogs, when unable to avoid or escape an object of terror, have only one option left and that is to fight. Typically, this involves aggressive display which can quickly escalate once the dog learns how very effective lunging, snarling and even biting is at driving away the source of fear. This also provides temporary release from feelings of intense stress- a bit like taking the lid off a pressure cooker. Fear aggression becomes a habitual response because it produces results that benefit the dog. When owners experience a pet that has started to lunge and snarl at other dogs when on the lead or along the garden fence, they often begin to wonder why their dog is fearful. These aggressive displays are so socially embarrassing that it can also feel more comfortable to label it as fear. However, frustration, more akin to ‘rage’ at not accessing or getting something the dog wants can to the untrained eye look similar to fear or defensive aggression. The source of frustration aggression is quite different and it is probably much more common than is thought, especially among young dogs. Typically, these dogs are quite social but may easily get over aroused and unable to calm down. 20 | SE21 - October 2020

Rather like some human teenagers, they enjoy the physical feelings of high excitement. Typically, such dogs play hard with other dogs as puppies and their owners encourage this, viewing it as useful exercise and ‘socialisation. However, these dogs can develop something akin to an addiction to their own stress hormones, to such an extent that the mere sight of other dogs at distance sends arousal levels rocketing. At this point, if the dog is on a lead or behind a barrier or under any kind of restraint, their inability to access the object of desire can turn into frustration rage and aggressive behaviour emerges. Just as with fear aggression, snarling and lunging serves to let off steam. These are the dogs that can become a nightmare to walk and the OTT behaviour can then begin to transfer to off lead exercise as well. Owners of easily frustrated dogs, thinking their dog is fearful, try to use avoidance and reward and find the problem gets worse. In this case, proximity to the other dog can be used as a functional reward for staying calm. The object longterm is to help the dog to learn self- control and pair calm behaviour with reward. If your dog starts to exhibit aggressive displays on lead you may need help to decide if it is fear or frustration- while they look very similar, identifying the underlying emotions and choosing the right training approach could mean the difference between success or failure.

PTA to MTD HMRC digital tax revolution & you

W

e have become accustomed to the pervasive spread of three letter acronyms. In recent years Her Majesty Revenue & Customs (HMRC) have been responsible for two of the most important three letter acronyms to affect our daily lives. The current buzz or excitement surrounding HMRC is MTD or to be more precise Making Tax Digital. This revolution is in full swing as any VAT registered business will vouch. However, the digital tax revolution is rooted in another three letters, PTA. This has nothing to do with schools or the 3Rs! PTA is all about your Personal Tax Account. Many taxpayers are still asking what is that about? HMRC launched the Personal Tax Account (PTA) in December 2015, to achieve their 3Es of • Effective • Efficient and • Easier for taxpayers to get their tax right. The overall objective is and continues to enable tax payers to get their tax right and be proactive in the process. The former may be somewhat ambitious given the lack of simplicity of the UK tax system, even for professionals. However, the latter is laudable and to be commended. Within the first year some 6.7m taxpayers had not only signed up but accessed their PTA. Furthermore, the Personal Tax Account (PTA) won Digital Project of the Year at the annual UK IT Industry Awards in 2016 The Personal Tax Account system is an online platform launched by HMRC in December 2015, to enable all taxpayers to view and make changes to their tax information online. This affords taxpayers the ability to manage and review their tax affairs online and hence achieve another HMRC goal, reduced contact with the taxpayer. The PTA allows taxpayers to manage three key areas of their personal tax lives : PAYE, Pension and Tax Credits

24 | SE21 - October 2020

PAYE Taxpayers can view their up to date PAYE records plus it provides a historical review of previous tax years. This includes for those taxpayers prone to losing key tax documents like their P60, good news, it is all found in your PTA. Tax payers can also advise HMRC of changes in any company benefits such as a company car. The PAYE records will and should become the go to place for any taxpayer seeking a mortgage as their employment income is wholly visible and attainable in minutes rather than the old regime of tracking down P60s for yesteryear or the current obsession by mortgage brokers for a SA302.

Tax Credits Taxpayers can check, manage and renew tax credits from their PTA. They can kiss good-bye to the filling out of reams of paper that they misplace several times before submitting a day or two before or after the deadline. No longer is there any place for such time consuming games of let’s keep this safe in a place we cannot remember at the appointed time.

Pensions One of the major attractions of the PTA is its ability for taxpayers to view their annual national insurance contributions status as this drives their state pension. Your PTA will show the number of full years of national insurance that you have achieved, as the goal is 35 complete years to achieve a full state pension on retirement. Addy, a taxpayer whose national insurance contributions was found to be deficient from 201112 to present, can vouch for the benefit of being advised to sign up and check her Personal Tax Account. As she approaches pension age, just reflect upon the devastation Addy would have experienced had she continued to be an ostrich taxpayer and not take personal responsibility for her tax affairs. If you have yet to join the digital tax revolution, to sign up for a Personal Tax Account it requires a visit to https://www.gov.uk/personaltax-account. The only additional requirements are your National Insurance number and your P60.

Making Maths Fun Education News from Alleyn's | www.alleyns.org.uk Deborah Mynors, Maths Co-ordinator at Alleyn’s Junior School, tells us how to improve our children’s numeracy while having fun. Maths is central to our lives and we use it all the time, whether we notice it or not. When we introduce maths to our children at a young age it can become a familiar friend, to be enjoyed rather than endured!

Finding Fun Finding fun and a sense of purpose in maths can unlock a greater enjoyment of numbers and lead, ultimately, to better numeracy and greater attainment. All parents, but especially those whose children find maths a little tricky, want to know how to support their child at home. There are books to buy and worksheets to download and while these have a place, making home a more numerate place might just be the key to encouraging your child to develop a comfortable relationship with maths. For many children, especially those of primary age, numbers continue to be just symbols that have to be deciphered and translated in order to carry out a calculation. Children do not always fully understand the value of each digit and how its value changes when it moves position in a number – for example the 2 in 23 is 20. Look how much children must learn about numbers: 5 = IIIII or = ‘five’ = comes after 4 and before 6. There is so much to think about that your child might find it all confusing, but once they have grasped and then internalised these concepts the rest will come more easily. This takes time so be patient and let your child go at their own pace.

support their numeracy in a fun way and keep it up until they are comfortable around numbers. Here are some ideas: • Card games are an excellent way to help with counting and recognising numbers – try Snap, Pair, Rummy or Whist. • Board games are excellent for promoting numeracy and a deeper understanding of numbers. Try Snakes and Ladders, Shut the Box, Yahtzee, Monopoly (but not the credit card version!) Prime Climb, Mobi, are but a few. • While out and about, try to weave number talk into your conversations. What number bus do we need? Is it odd or even? What would 10 more/10 less, 100 more/100 less be? • Don’t forget the old favourites – cooking (weighing and measuring), time telling (What time is it now? Dinner will be in half an hour, what time will that be?), and using measuring jugs at bath time. • There are free online maths games your child can enjoy, too – see the links below. These tips will help your child with number recognition, ordering numbers and mathematical vocabulary, which leads on to number manipulation, strategy and way beyond!

s with most of us, Dulwich Hamlet has been in lockdown since mid-March, with the club effectively put in hibernation to survive the ravages of the virus and a lack of match-day receipts. But that has begun to change in recent weeks with a small army of volunteers descending on the Hamlet’s hallowed ground to get it ready for some early behind doors warm-up and FA Cup qualifying matches for the men’s and women’s teams. On 29 August, Champion Hill resounded to the sound of gardening implements clattering on concrete as grass, leaves and knee-high weeds were pulled, plucked and chucked from the terraces. The ground had become a botanist’s dream with triffid like weeds reclaiming Gavin Rose’s dugout and a burger-garnish seeded tomato plant growing out of a crack on the car wash end. A jar of Champion Hill Chutney will be auctioned shortly, with proceeds going towards buying a bottle of embrocation for the Hamlet’s medical team. Meanwhile another platoon of volunteers was busy putting East Dulwich’s most famous stadium through its paces, with a deep clean of

the bar, changing rooms and other facilities that make Champion Hill the special place so many of us love. After three days of back-breaking grind, our city on the hill was left gleaming like a beacon of hope to locals starved of semi-pro football through this wretched pandemic. And the football has started, albeit largely behind closed doors. The Hamlet men have played a few friendlies, with A. Triallist catching the eye, and our outstanding women’s team managed to beat Margate to progress in the FA Cup. All games have been played under strict FA health and safety rules, including the requirement that balls going out of play need to be cleaned and debugged before being returned to the pitch. Again Hamlet fans answered the call to make the game happen, with many acting as ball disinfecting ballboys. The grey hair on show suggested that many of the volunteers had last been ballboys when the balls had laces. But without them the games could not have happened. So here we are, praying that plans to get the season started in early October with (a limited number of) fans allowed through the door aren’t dashed by a resurgence of the virus. Indeed, on

13 September the women’s team kicked off their league campaign in front of 178 fans by beating the Pride of Kent (Aylesford WFC) 8-0. As things stand, Dulwich Hamlet men’s team will play their first league home game against Canvey’s Concord Rangers on 6 October. Please keep your eyes peeled for further announcements about tickets and other arrangements.

Despite the uncertainty about the start date to the men’s team season, the Football Club recently launched the sale of season tickets for the 202021 season. Season tickets are valid for all home league games played at Champion Hill by any of the club's teams and continue to represent the good value, with over 400 purchased on the first day alone.
