Welcome to SE21 Where did August go? I am not complaining as it means it is time for my favourite time of the year and my bumper Back to School issue. The support by so many local companies, has meant I can include more editorial in the magazine this month, so thank you for advertising with me. As the magazine relies on all the fantastic advertisers, please do let them know where you saw them; it really helps. As usual I have rounded up all the great events taking place in and around Dulwich. Last month we saw the return of the parkruns in Peckham Rye and Dulwich Park. This month it is fantastic to have two great fairs on our doorstep: the Dulwich Park Fair (page31) and the Peckham Rye Fete which are back and I have full details for you. It is also great to see the return of The Dyslexia Fair at our very own Bell House. Find out all the details of this amazing event on page 40 The events pages start on page 6. There are a whopping eight pages of online and in person events happening in and around Dulwich. So there is plenty to do right on our doorsteps. There was no room for a Last Word this month but f you would like to feature in a future issue, please do get in touch. Until next time.

Putting You Back In C
W
e know the return to the office and what is in store over the next few months can generate worry and stress. One thing you can do to alter this is help maximise your health. Here are some suggestions using the 6 pillars of Human Health to guide you. You don’t need to try and do all of these in one go, and in fact sometimes this can all be too much. Just pick a couple of pillars and have a go at implementing them regularly to see some big changes. Remember - it takes around 45 days to really imbed change so be kind to yourself and you will see some long term, sustainable improvements.
Human Health Plan 1) NUTRITION Try to batch cook or at least try and prep some meals in advance so you can take meals in. This means you aren’t relying on external sources for food like the canteen, local cafes etc. You can then eat when you are hungry to maximise your performance and concentration at work. Eat regularly, and choose food with a low glycaemic index. These are foods that won’t spike your blood glucose levels too high e.g. Green vegetables, most fruits, raw carrots, kidney beans, chickpeas, lentils and bran breakfast cereals. These sustain your sugar levels at an even level sustaining your mood and productivity. Aim for 10-12 fruits and vegetables over the course of a day – this sounds a lot (and is more than the government guidance) but can be achieved with smoothies, soups, stews, adding fruit to cereals and snacking on fruit and vegetable through the day. Snack on foods that are dense in energy (eat in moderation) e.g. handful of almond nuts. Choose foods high in phytonutrients e.g. Wholegrains, nuts and blueberries, which contain resveratrol – a powerful anti-oxidant and minimises inflammation internally. Aim for 35g soluble fibre which not only helps to keep bowel movements regular, but also provides a substrate for your gut microbiome. This collection of friendly gut bacteria has multiple beneficial actions including a powerful action on 10 | SE21 - September 2021
your mental and physical well-being. Remember to drink plenty of water with this too to minimise bloating. Adding food high in fibre to salads and meals are a quick way to boost intake e.g. spinach or flax seeds. Supplements that are instantly going to boost your immune system and beat stress: • Good quality multivitamin • B Complex including: B5 / B6 / Biotin / Folate / B12 • Vitamin C • Magnesium • Omega-3 • Zinc • Vitamin D If you are working with a specialist, they may recommend some adaptogens to help you too like Ashwagandha, ginseng and licorice. Adaptogens are naturally occurring chemicals that can help relieve stress and can help build your ability to tolerate physical and mental stress. There is plenty of good evidence to show they can dampen down activity in the brain-adrenal axis that deals with excessive stress (Hypothalamic-Pituitary-adrenal axis). In some cases, you may benefit from blood tests to look at your production of stress hormones like DHEA that can be supplemented if running low. This is something that needs prescribing and can be done at Human Health.
2) MOVEMENT Movement drives down cortisol and increases endorphin release. It is also powerful at reducing inflammation internally, which reduces your risk of Metabolic Syndrome (includes diseases like diabetes, stroke and heart disease which all have similar causes). Rhythmic, aerobic exercise using large muscle groups • Moderate/ low intensity 15-20 mins 3x week • Make this something you like doing! E.g. gardening or walking. Try parking further away from work or getting off a stop early and walking in to the office. Use the stairs rather than the lift. If it becomes part of your routine, you are more likely to sustain it. • If you prefer/ able to try the Scientific 7-minute workout: 30 seconds each, 10 second break
between and around an intensity 8/10 for each. This is doable by your desk!
3) SLEEP Reducing your sleep by 2 hours each night for a week will exponentially increase your stress so try and stick to a routine before a big talk or meeting. Try and get an early night regularly – it doesn’t need to be every night but maybe try allocating 1 night of the week like Mondays. If you have young children – maybe even try having mealtime and bedtime with them once a week! • Avoid exercise in the 2-3 hours before sleep to avoid high endorphin levels • Reduce (ideally avoid) device use in the 2 hours before bed • Minimise watching the news/ disaster movies or documentaries in the run up to bed • Have a bath using Epsom salts (high in Magnesium which helps relax and unwind), • Try a turmeric soy milk latte (rather than hot chocolate or tea which contain caffeine) • Reading a book before falling asleep • When you wake up try to expose your pineal gland (gland located in your brain which is sensitive to light and helps you establish day/ night patterns) to daylight – open the windows and soak up that light! Some people do well with a light therapy box too in the winter months too.
4) STRESS MANAGEMENT
• Laughing: reduces cortisol and increases serotonin (happy hormone) • Drumming
5) RELATIONSHIPS Community activities help boost immunity and reduce stress e.g., Singing in a local choir. Talking about how your new journey or commute to work is bothering you with your partner/ friends or work colleagues will really help you realise that others share your worries, and they may have some tips to help you like travelling in together.
6) USE OF CAFFEINE/ ALCOHOL/ SMOKING/ other drugs of misuse These are considered ANTI-nutrients so not only do they provide no nutritional value; they also reduce your ability to absorb essential nutrients from your diet. So, try to moderate the amount and frequency you use these. In some cases, if you need to speak to a specialist if you think you may have an addiction then do not feel ashamed to reach out. • Alcoholics Anonymous - 0800 9177650 • Narcotics Anonymous - 0300 999 1212 If you feel this whole process of getting ready to return to the work space is daunting and you’d like to find out how you can easily implement these and other measures to help your health, then please do get in touch with me: drmayoni@drmhumanhealth.co.uk 0208 699 9496 | www.drmhumanhealth.co.uk
• Breathing exercises again that can be done easily on your way in to work or by your desk: • Smiling: release endorphins

Control Of Your Health
Plants For Late Summer Colour Garden Talk with Janine Winlaw | Instagram @janinewinlaw Keep the colour glowing in your garden into autumn with these late flowering beauties… Anemone x hybrid ‘September Charm’ These elegant flowers, which rise up on long stems from a mass of large leaves, will brighten up the garden from late summer until early autumn. A. ‘September Charm’ is a pretty rosy pink and A. ‘Honorine Jolbert’ is a crisp white – both have gorgeous sunny golden centres. Happy in sun and shade – they’re a must.
Novi-belgii ‘Vasterival’ This is an elegant and airy perennial with masses of pale violent daisy-like flowers on dark stems. Aster x frikartii ‘Monch’ is shorter with bigger pale blue flowers, this is another perennial to lighten up the early autumn months. A. ‘Little Carlow’ is another reliable variety with lavender blue flowers. Best in full sun.
Geranium ‘Rozanne’ Of all the geraniums G. ‘Rozanne’ is one of the latest flowering. If you keep deadheading this useful geranium with large pale purple flowers, it’ll bloom into autumn. Happiest in an open sunny spot where it’ll form a large spreading mound.
Rudbeckia fulgida var. sullivantii ‘Goldsturm’ Large golden daisies with black eyes they shine out against purples and grasses into early autumn. For a similar sunny sunflower feel, try helianthus varieties such as H. ‘Lemon Queen’ with softer yellow flowers, or for a richer orange colour H. ‘Moerheim Beauty’ is a classic.
Hylotelephium (Sedum) Sedum come into their own in September when their large flat flower heads turn to warm shades of pink, purple and red. ‘Autumn Joy’ is a very reliable variety with masses of sturdy stems and large heads of flowers that will stay up well into the winter. For more drama H. ‘Red Cauli’ with crimson red flowers is one of the brightest. 12 | SE21 - September 2021
Ceratostigma plumbaginoides A great small shrub for autumn with masses of bright cobalt-blue flowers from August to October which contrast beautifully with the rich russet-red leaves. Full sun or part shade.
Liriope muscari A very useful evergreen grass-like ground cover plant for partial to full shade. It also has purpleblue flower spikes in late summer. ‘Money Maker’ is a paler version and ‘Monroe White’ is a pretty white variety.
Salvia ‘Amistad’ The salvia family are great for late summer colour and S. Amistad with its large dramatically dark purple flower spires on long dark stems is a stunner and will go on into flowering into October, provided it has a sunny spot with free draining soil. S. ‘Blue Enigma’ is another statuesque salvia with tall spires of bright blue.
Crocosmia x crocosmiiflora ‘Emily Mckenzie’ The warm terracotta orange of this late flowering crocosmia goes beautifully with purples and ornamental grasses. It also has attractive sword like leaves. It likes full sun or part shade and doesn’t like to dry out. C. ‘Honey Angels’ is a lovely yellow variety.
Perovskia ‘Blue spire’ The tall spires of pale grey/ blue flowers on silvery stems create a cool haze when planted en mass. Flowering into late September it looks great with ornamental grasses and other late flowering perennials. Best in full sun, it can get floppy, so cut it right down in spring. P. ‘Little Spire’ is a shorter version of the well known P. ‘Blue Spire.’
Gaura lindheimeri A delicate airy plant with a mass of fine white star-shaped flowers on slender stems from May to September. It’s lovely with ornamental grasses and Verbena bonariensis in an open spot in full sun.

Damson Cobbler Recipes from Suzanne James | www.suzannejames.co.uk
T
his is a classic English version of a fruit cobbler, a little time consuming (as you need to stew the damsons and remove the stones), but the end result makes it more than worthwhile.
Ingredients • 2lb (900g) damsons • 4oz (100g) caster sugar • 2 tablespoons elderflower cordial • 6 demerara sugar cubes, crushed coarsely, or • 1 heaped teaspoon loose sugar For the topping • 8oz (225) plain flour, sifted • ½ teaspoon salt • 3 level teaspoons baking powder • 4oz (110g) ice-cold butter or margarine, cut into chunks • 6fl oz (170ml) buttermilk or fresh milk You will also need a baking dish approximately 9” in diameter and 2½” deep (23cm and 6cm deep).
Method 1) Stew the fruit in a pan with a little water and sugar until soft, leave to cool and remove the stones – you may want to wear gloves to avoid staining your fingers! 2) Arrange the damsons, sugar and elderflower cordial in the baking dish. 3) Place the sifted flour, salt, baking power and butter into a food processor. 4) Pulse the processor (i.e. turn it on and off quickly) several times until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs. 5) Pour in the buttermilk (or milk) and switch on again briefly until you have a thick, very sticky dough. 6) Spoon tablespoons of the mixture over the fruit – you can do this as haphazardly as you like. 7) Finally sprinkle the crushed sugar over the top of the dough, and put the dish on a high self in the oven for 25-30 minutes or until it is a crusty golden brown. 8) Serve it warm from the oven with Ice Cream. 14 | SE21 - September 2021

Energisers!
Fitness tips with Leanne Spencer | www.bodyshotperformance.com
O
ne of the big questions that people have is how can I get more energy? How can I be more mobile and get more movement into a working day? For many of you, or perhaps most of you, your working days will be relatively sedentary. Movement snacking, which is something I have already written about in one of my previous blogs, is a partial solution to getting more energy, improving your mood and getting your body moving. But if you are not familiar with the concept of movement snacking, here is a quick definition: A movement snack is a little pocket of movement, just a minute of movement every hour. For example, you might get out of your chair and you may do some squats. Or, you may go up and down your stairs a few times. This month I’ll share quick energisers or movement snacks that you can build into your day.
Connecting Your Mind with Your Body This energiser is designed to get you out of your head quickly, connect your mind with your body. How to do this? A Qigong Twist is a great full-body movement, it gets your whole body moving and gets your breath going. The Qigong movement gets the energy flow or QI going. But more than that, it starts connecting your brain to your body. Some call it Qi or Chi, or maybe blood flow, electricity, neutrons, protons, all of the above. It’s a simple movement twisting the spine slightly, making sure to slightly bend the knees, perfect for waking up the joints. Turn the head, let the neck relax and take some deep breaths with it.
Shake It Out Bend your knees, jump up and down and shake. By jumping up and down, you’re getting your joints activated, getting some blood flow. Using that connective tissue, plus shaking is meant to help release stress. It gets energy around your body, flowing through the Meridian lines on your body. Once they’re activated, they get energised and send good energy around the body. 16 | SE21 - September 2021
If It All Sounds Nuts, Just Think of It as a Dance Dancing we all know is good for you, emotionally and physically. So just shake it out, jump up and down. Get everyone in the office/home doing that, joining in next time you see them. So following on from this once you’ve shaken out a little bit and feel a bit de-stressed. We want you to twist. So you’re going to twist and touch the opposite foot, and then jump, and touch the other foot.

Stepping into School Education News from Alleyn's | www.alleyns.org.uk • Feelings: little souls have big emotions. It is important that children can recognise and acknowledge their feelings so that teachers can support and encourage them to process them. Ask your child ‘how do you feel?’ when you can see them experiencing different emotions and help them to understand what these are and that they are normal.
3) Academic Kristy O’Donnell, Reception teacher at Alleyn’s Junior School, tells us how to prepare our children for their first day at school.
T
he first day at school is a huge step for both children and parents. During their Reception year your child will develop their independence, maturity, confidence, resilience and curiosity. They will learn by doing things for themselves, exploring, investigating, watching and listening, engaging in discussions, through creative and imaginative play… the list goes on. How can you prepare your child for the first day of this seminal year? There are three skill areas to focus on.
1) Physical • Dressing independently: practise buttons, zips and shoe fastenings with your child so they can feel confident getting changed. • Playing outside: ‘big’ physical play, such as climbing, will help your child’s brain to develop and improve their motor skills, preparing them for writing.
2) Personal, Social & Emotional • Sharing and turn-taking: playing games in small groups will encourage your child to understand that others are important and prepare them for sharing toys in class. • Socialising: spending time with other children will support your child in feeling comfortable in initiating play and conversation with their new school friends. 18 | SE21 - September 2021
• Developing a love of books: if your child sees you reading, they will want to read. Chose a range of stories to enrich their vocabulary and interests. Encourage them to ask and answer questions and use their imagination to think up new characters and alternative endings to the story. • Holding a pencil correctly: practise holding a pencil in your child’s dominant hand using a tripod grip. The wrong grip can be uncomfortable and hard to correct down the line. • Counting everything: build early maths skills by identifying numbers on buses or front doors or counting anything from buttons on coats to how many stairs you climb.
Talk, Talk, Talk Above all, and fundamental to a successful first day at school, is talking about school. Discuss in advance with your child what you will do in the morning leading up to dropping them off. Listen to any concerns or questions your child might have and give them all the positive reasons why you chose the school they are joining. Explain when and how you will say goodbye and then do it! A positive, confident handover is critical for leaving your child happy and safe. Every school has a different drop-off procedure so if you’re not sure, check with the school how they approach this. Remember, your child will be one of a whole class of new pupils with a teacher intent on settling them all in!

Financial Matters

Company Cars Are Changing The appeal and glamour of the company car if ever, now seems to be a memory of a bygone era. Today the company car is less attractive especially, those cars with higher emissions. Their unattractiveness arises because they impose upon the employee a higher taxable benefit-in-kind charge. Beyond the individual pain such cars are now recognised as imposing greater harm to our environment. Economists may assert that, such cars incur greater costs upon society, beyond the financial burden born by the individual. Consequently, employees who are still wedded to the company car, are transitioning to the more environmentally caring green option and choosing hybrids or electric cars. The personal attraction for employees is the more favourable taxable benefit-in-kind. This attraction is a continuation of the initial 2010-2015 government incentive which saw zero emission electric company cars being tax free to employees. Central government continues to offer incentives and devise tax policies to encourage the switch to environmentally friendly cars. For example from 12 March 2020, a grant of up to £3,000 was available to drivers switching to electric cars. To further stimulate the transition to electric cars, the government reduced the plug-in car grant (PICG) and capped the value of cars on which it could be claimed. At present the PICG grant is £2,500 and available to cars with a list price ceiling of £35,000. Furthermore, the government has introduced a voucher-based workplace charging scheme. This enables eligible employers to receive support towards the capital costs of purchasing and the installation of electric vehicle charge points on their grounds. Employers pay a fuel-only mileage rate for the fuel cost that they reimburse employees, who use a company car for business journeys only. The applicable rate set by HMRC is determined by the car fuel type and engine size. For example, the current advisory fuel rate for an employee driving a company car with an engine size of 1401-2000cc is 13p per mile. If that employee drives 10,000 24 | SE21 - September 2021
business miles per annum, the employer fuel cost would be £1,300. However, if that same employee drove an electric car, the advisory fuel rate is reduced to 4p per mile. This saves the employer £900 per annum. It is not difficult to see the attractiveness to employers with multiple employees who drive thousands of business miles per annum. The comparative savings would be even greater for shifting from a petrol company car over 2000cc. The comparative saving amounts to £1,500 per employee per annum. Employers also have a financial interest in the taxable benefit-in-kind incurred by their employees. Why? Employers incur a Class1A National Insurance Contribution (NIC) at 13.8% on their employee’s benefit-in-kind value. Therefore both sides have a vested interest in the assessed benefit-in-kind being low. The lower the car emission the lower the benefit-in-kind charge and a win-win for both parties and the wider society. In short the benefit-in-kind is based upon a fixed percentage charged upon the UK list price of the car. The fixed percentage is directly related to the emissions of the car. Despite the desire to move to a greener environment, there are some internal obstacles for employees, employers and the government to overcome. A major hurdle, at present is the price of electric cars. Further operational issues to be addressed include the UK network infrastructure and charging points despite the improvements in recent years. Employees travelling long distances daily have yet to be satisfied about the car range. Finally, the charging time dwarfs fuel stops and needs to be accommodated into the employees’ productive capacity schedule. These are merely temporary hurdles as society transitions.

How To Train Your Cat To Like The Cat Carrier
Pets Corner with Leonie St Clair | www.londondogstraining.co.uk
L
ate last year, my elderly father sadly lost his beloved cat to cancer. The death of a pet is always distressing but this was made more so because of circumstances. Lockdown meant the vet was unable to visit my father’s home and he was unable, until the final days, to get his cat to the vet. The poor animal was terrified of the cat carrier and would run and hide or attack and bite my father any time it appeared. No cat owner knows when it might be necessary to transport their pet, but at least one journey is likely to be necessary in any cat’s lifetime. A bit of preparation and training can make use of the cat carrier much less traumatic all round. Your cat may even learn to like it. The first big mistake is to store the carrier out of sight and smell of the cat. The carrier seems alien (cats are intensely territorial and dislike change). If the cat has been forced into the carrier at some point and taken to the vet for a scary examination/ procedure or to be boarded at a cattery while the owners are on holiday, the associations are even worse and may stick for a lifetime. The benefits of a cat carrier are numeroussome like easing the stress of necessary visits to the vet are obvious but there are others, like giving shy cats a safe hiding place around visitors to the home or during thunderstorms and fireworks, or when it is necessary to contain or transport the cat in an emergency.
Key Training Points • Ensure the carrier is large enough for your cat to stand, turn and lie stretched out, but don’t make it too big. That snug feel increases a sense of security. • Have a carrier where the top can be removed for easy examination/access to the cat. • Plastic airline carriers, with a wire door, are ideal. Put soft bedding inside. • Place the carrier in an area you know your cat chooses as a resting place. • Keep the carrier out and open, all the time. You can remove the door on many carriers. • Next, make the carrier a cat pleasure palace. Scatter high value treats inside for him to discover on his own. Play games near and inside the carrier, 26 | SE21 - September 2021
use cat balls or feather flirt toys. • Now teach your cat to go in the carrier. Say ‘in’ and toss a treat inside. Wait for puss to eat the treat and emerge again. Keep repeating this game until puss waits inside for another treat, now deliver a few and leave him in there to eat. • Next re-attach the door. Play the ‘in’ game, wait until puss is happily focused on eating treats and shut the door momentarily, opening it again before he stops eating. Repeat and slowly build duration. • Watch carefully for any signs of tension or distress and go back a number of steps, if this happens. • The next stage is to slowly and gently start lifting the carrier with the door closed and while your cat is relaxed. You can dispense treats, if he will eat. Start with just inches off the floor, lifting and lowering and graduate to moving around the room, gently holding the carrier to avoid rocking. • At this stage you can also practise using a towel to cover the wire door. • Finally, practise putting cat and carrier into the car, once he is happy build up to short journeys.

fter a hefty hiatus, competitive men’s football has resumed back at the cradle of non-league football that is East Dulwich’s very own Champion Hill. Dulwich Hamlet booted off their third and a half season in the National League South (football’s most senior sub-national league no less) against Chippenham Town. Now Chippenham is famous for a number of things. Legendary rocker Eddie Cochran died in a car crash there or thereabouts. Hero of the working class Jeremy Corbyn was born in a manor house not too far away. And England footballer and all round good egg Tyrone Mings once played for the Bluebirds, while advising locals about their mortgages at the same time. None of this mattered a fig however as the Pink and Blues, looking glorious in their new Bauhaus inspired kit, went one up against the men of Wiltshire. Hamlet’s wingmen threatened to besmirch the honour of the Chippenham goal throughout the game. But a jammy penalty for the visitors saw the game finish one all each apiece and square. A decent start.

@dhstorg
If you’ve never experienced the thrill and occasional spill of a Hamlet home game, then why not get yourself down to the Stadio della Dog Kennel Hill Sainsbury’s this season. You will love it. All human life is there. And quite a bit of canine life too. And when you do head down to the Hill, you’ll see that the stadium has smart new navy seating in the Tommy Jover stand. The estimable Supporters’ Trust ponied up the cash for the improvements and now has a shareholding of just over 29% of the club. Truly a supporter led club. You can of course check out all the details of all upcoming games and league fixtures at: www.pitchero.com/clubs/dulwichhamlet/. And you can make sure you have all the right clobber at the games via the online shop at: www.dhst.org.uk or at the mega-container club shop on match day. Replica shirts should be available shortly. So up the Hamlet and see you all at Champion Hill.

What's On - September Tuesday 7 September: A Curious Absence of Chickens: A journal of life, food & recipes from Puglia by Sophie Grigson (Live Stream Event)
7:30pm - 8:30pm. ‘Puglia is a region I wanted to get to know intimately, to understand culture, life, history and geography, reflecting through the prism of the food that’s put on the tables of locals and tourists, too. I’m reminded of my 20-year old self, scribbling in notebooks as I first travelled through Italy’s south, only this time I’m back to stay.’ After her children grew up and left home, Sophie Grigson found herself living alone. About to turn 60, she took the decision to sell or give away most of her belongings, to pack up her car and to drive to Puglia on her own to start a new life. In a part of Italy where she didn’t know anyone, having last visited the region 40 years ago, this narrative book of food writing, stories and recipes brings to life the region, its food and the local characters that she meets along the way. This is a book about courage, hope, new horizons and, above all, delicious food. www.village-books.co.uk/events/

Tuesday 14 September: An Evening with Dame Joan Bakewell (Live Stream Event)
7:30pm - 8:30pm. When Joan Bakewell, Labour Peer, author and famous champion of the older people's right to a good and fruitful life, decided that she could no longer remain in her old home, she had to confront what she calls 'the next segment of life.' So much of the world is on the move - voluntarily or not - and so many people are living to a great old age. In using the tale of her own life, Joan Bakewell tells us a story of our times and how she is learning to live to the sound and tune of The Tick of Two Clocks: the old and the new. Joan Bakewell says: ‘Old age is no longer a blip in the calendar, just a few declining years before the end. Old age is now a major and important part of life: It should command as much thought - even anxiety - as teenagers give to exam results and young marrieds how many children to have . . . I am in my 80s and moving towards the end of my life. But in a more actual sense, I have moved from my dear home of 50 odd years into another . . . the home where I will be until the end. Writing here of how it has happened is in a sense a reconciliation with what cannot be avoided, but which can be confronted’. www.trybooking.com/uk/ Hosted by Village Books.

Tom Chivers discusses his new book, London Clay 7pm - 8:30pm
London Clay is a book about the city beneath the city, the landscape long buried underneath the sprawling metropolis: it is also a personal account of growing up in London, and of overcoming loss through the layered stories of the capital. Chivers explores concealed pathways and explores lost islands, following phantom streams and hiking post-industrial landscapes to examine our connection to place and to celebrate urban edgelands.
