Dulwich Festival 2016

his year’s Dulwich Festival delivers a tremendous calendar of art, music and cultural inspiration all squeezed into ten exhilarating days in May. The 23rd staging of the Festival - the annual celebration of the arts in Dulwich and the surrounding area - once again promises a wealth of cultural entertainment and stimulation for everyone, and takes place from 6th-15th May 2016. Doctor, comedian and health commentator Dr Phil Hammond will be bringing his ‘How to survive the NHS…and help the NHS survive’ show to Alleyn's Great Hall on 9th May. In this highly subversive comedy, Dr Phil calls for an end to top down disorganisation of the NHS, and launches his own 'bidet revolution' – from the bottom up. Later in the week, the 2015 Christmas number one holders - the Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Choir - will be headlining the Festival of Choirs at Holst Hall. The choir is made up of staff from across the NHS workforce - from doctors and nurses to porters and administrators. For drama lovers, there will be plays and performances for all ages. The internationallyacclaimed Tangram Theatre Company will bring their much-lauded performance, Albert Einstein: Relativitively Speaking to this year's Festival. Their collaborative, challenging and entertaining approach to theatre seeks to actively engage the

audience, so be ready to join in! Garlic Theatre will enthrall a family audience with a magical display from their beautifully crafted shoe puppets in a funny, poetic and imaginative performance. In a first for the festival, Dulwich Park will play host to a piece of interactive outdoor theatre. When a schoolgirl needs help in solving the riddle of time travel, there’ll be clues for the audience to solve and a trail to follow, so oodles fun to be had when The Multiple Myrtle Mysteries land! This year’s music calendar promises a number of treats. A Scandinavian Soundaround will invite anyone who can play a scale on their instrument to bring it along for a collaborative workshop in Dulwich Picture Gallery. Places will be limited, so those interested are urged to buy their tickets in advance. Meanwhile, the Joglaresa Ensemble’s show Nuns and Roses will provide an insight into music from the Middle Ages to the 17th century, and Nedwardo and the Rumbanauts band will be

Easter Round up By Sarah Pylas

very year, my son receives Easter eggs from various family members and every year I tell myself that I won’t touch any of them. And, every year I do. The unopened eggs line up on a shelf - too high for my 6-year to reach - and wink at me every time I walk past. But, it is the already cracked chocolate eggs broken up into bite size pieces in a bowl in the fridge that is the most difficult to resist. I can’t make a cup of tea without reaching for a shard of milk chocolate deliciousness. I sneak a tiny piece after breakfast, while I am waiting for our dinner to cook, and after my son has gone to bed. Why I am still paying for a Slimming World membership is beyond me! If only I was as active as my son, who has just started tennis lessons at Dulwich Sports Club and can burn off the extra calories on the court. There’s also weekly football and swimming classes to keep him fit and healthy, although sadly the same can’t be said for my rapidly diminishing bank balance. March certainly turned out to be a month of celebration and over indulgence this year. SE22 magazine kicked it all off with a party at The Palmerston to celebrate 11 years in business! The birthday bash was held in their upstairs function room again and was beautifully organised - from the free-flowing fizz to the wonderful selection of canapés on the table. The following week, a good friend came to stay with us from the U.S., which provided a perfect opportunity to raise another glass (or 3) and enjoy the fabulous eateries on our doorstep. We went for tea at Toasted and for dinner at Pedler in Peckham, which gets better and better on every visit. But, it wasn’t just the local nightlife we introduced her to; she was also totally blown away by the breathtaking view of London’s skyline from the top of One Tree

Hill and our glorious green open spaces. With another week to go before the school routine resumes for the summer term, I am making the most of the last few opportunities for lazy mornings at home and afternoon strolls in the park, eating ice cream on the grass (I really hope my Slimming World consultant does not read this magazine). With April, comes a new exhibition by photographer, Alison Romanczuk, at Jade Boulangerie; while Brockwell Lido hosts The Modern Movement – a festival of 20th-century design from 30th April – 1st May. Next month, the Dulwich Festival will return for 2-weeks from 6-15th May, which is one of my alltime favourite local events. The Dulwich Festival Fair on Sunday 8th May is another highlight, and with over 200 artists already signed up for the popular Artists Open House weekends, we are all in for a really fun packed couple of weeks. April Fool: The Easiest Dessert Ever, No Joke.

ver the years in this Hectic Host column we have shared many handy hacks on how to make entertaining just that little bit easier. From recipes that take minutes rather than hours, to how to get your home guest-ready and recover afterwards. When it comes to dinner parties the perennial problem for us all seems to be the pudding course. Perceived as tricky and hard to get right I am a great advocate of buying in. ‘Why try when you can buy?’ is my motto and who would dispute that, especially with all our wonderful local bakeries and patisseries? However one of our oldest national recipes happens to be one of our most simple; the fool is actually foolproof. The first written record of the word ‘foole’, associated with a dessert, appears in a 1598 dictionary 'Worlde of Wordes'; ‘a kinde of clouted creame called a foole’. It was in the sixteenth century, from what I can gather, almost a trifle; bread steeped in a fruit custard. Today recipes vary greatly from blends of custard with whipped double cream to cream and Greek yoghurt but to keep things concise nothing beats the nononsense ease of my one-part fruit compote, two-parts cream combination. A compote is essentially fruit stewed in water and sugar; nothing could be simpler you may think, however, my go-to dessert became even easier this weekend when I discovered the joys of Fruition handmade compotes at Herne Hill Market on Sunday. Instead of making my own, in a flash I can now add one of Fruition’s exceptional creations to bowls of whipped double cream. Seasonally there are many to choose from; rhubarb and orange; rhubarb and ginger; apple and lemon; plum and cinnamon; plum and vanilla; sweet cherry and gooseberry and elderflower. Made in Clapham from ingredients bought locally, I will never have to agonise over dessert again. A few tips here; when assembling I would

advise putting your compote into your bowl or glass first, then spoon on your cream, gently lift some of the fruit up through the cream and make a very gentle half stir to get a satisfying swirl effect. Top with fine sprinkles of gated lemon zest and quite literally a few crystals of brown sugar. This dish does not sit well so you will have to make it just before you serve. Another regular to Herne Hill Market is Jan Pateman; whose locally hand-made, splendidly pleasing pottery espresso cups make the perfect receptacle for this rich delight. Another way to round of a meal is with a plate of delicious Dulwich-made guimauves by La Maison Guimauve. The French version of marshmallows; these are nothing like the bags of fluff that supermarkets sell. Soft, fresh and delicious, I was immediately hooked. You can buy, and you will be going back and buying again and again, online from lamaisonguimauve.com. I don’t think I have seen anything prettier than the cappuccino confections.

Lemon & Dill Cured Salmon Gravlax Here is a recipe for a lovely light salad for those soon to arrive long summer evenings, also perfect if you will be entertaining over Easter. Serves 10. Preparation time 20 mins. Cooking time 72 hours

Ingredients • 1/2 side of salmon, skinned and pin boned • 2 Lemons (zest only) • Half a bunch of fresh dill • 600g Table salt • 600g Caster sugar

Method 1) Trim any excess fat from edges of salmon and set aside. 2) Weigh out your sugar and salt and mix together. 3) Finely chop dill and add to the salt mix, with the zest of 2 lemons. 4) Thoroughly mix all ingredients together. 5) In a container big enough to fit your salmon into, spread a layer of the marinade over the bottom about 1/2 an inch thick. 6) Lay the salmon onto the salt mix and gently press down. 7) Pour the rest of the salt mix over the salmon, ensuring it is completely covered around all edges. 8) Cover in cling film and place into the fridge for 72 hours. 9) After a few days, all the water will have been drawn out of the salmon and it will essentially "be cooked” and ready to be finely sliced. 10) We serve it with watercress, finely diced boiled new potatoes, capers and brown shrimp with a lemon vinaigrette. A nice variation of this is to mix a pureed beetroot into the salt and sugar mix to give the salmon an awesome deep purple ring. 14 | SE22 - April 2016

ery often when I start working with clients, the concept of meditation can seem quite alien to them, and many think it’s impossible. This is the downside of our super-charged lifestyles; the body doesn’t know how to shut off. Practising mediation is quite simply learning to be still, to be quiet and to allow the body time to restore itself back to homeostasis and a place of calm. There are a lot of preconceptions about meditation and what it means; I was very dismissive of it when I first came across it, thinking this wasn’t something I had time for or needed. The truth is, everyone would benefit from meditating, even if it’s only for ten minutes a day. The other misconception about meditation is that it involves being guided through a twenty-minute dream-like state, sitting in the Buddha position, or falling into a trance imagining yourself swimming with dolphins. Meditating is about taking the time to think about nothing else but your body and your breathing. Your mind should be still, your thoughts should be boxed away, and the best way to start is to focus on your breathing. I was on a sales training day many years ago, and the sales director asked us all to sit in silence for several minutes and then make a note of the noises we could hear. Almost everyone came back with the same noises; passing traffic, pedestrians talking on their phones, the sounds of footfall on the pavement, the creaking of chairs, clothes rustling, and so on. No-one in the room (there were over 100 people there) said they heard the sounds of their breathing, despite it being the closest noise to them. This is because it’s something that we do automatically, and therefore we don’t hear it. What meditating does is bring your attention back to your breathing, and to allow you to focus on yourself again. In the same way that none of the salespeople in the meeting noticed their

breathing because they were focusing externally on the white noise around them, if you’re focusing on your breathing you automatically block out the white noise around you so you can fully focus. If you try and calm it, it only makes it worse, but over time it does calm… Your mind just slows down, and you see a tremendous expanse in the moment. How To Hunt With Your Cat

ats are viewed as low maintenance pets and it is true they certainly need much less one to one than your average dog. Nonetheless, it is a good idea to try to foster some daily play sessions with your cat, up to four or five is recommended. Cats are essentially hunting machines on four legs. Without the necessary outlets for hardwired behaviours like chasing, pouncing, catching and dissecting objects that remind him of prey, your cat is much more likely to go after the real thing. The downside of real world hunting is the cat may disappear for hours at night as he goes off in search of a predatory fix, some getting lost in the process. He may also choose to perfect his prey dissection techniques on your best rug and, of course, the local song bird population may suffer if your cat is an especially ‘gifted’ hunter. The best thing is to try to set up your home to give your cat the outlets he craves and nature intended. Introduce multiple daily play sessions from kittenhood. Kittens love to play so getting them addicted to toys we control is the way to go. Most of us are familiar with the idea of pulling a small, furry object around on a string which our cat chases and tosses around for a while before sauntering off again. Many of us will also have accumulated a small pile of toys that are played with once or twice and then ignored by our ‘fussy’ pet. Recent research suggests there is good reason for this. The cat bores of toys he cannot dissect. A cat’s physical attributes and hardwired instincts prompt it to respond to certain objects in exactly the same way it would live prey. Movement is the first element, and in a game the chasing and pouncing bit is easy to satisfy, especially if we substitute a toy tied to string with a toy tied to a flirt pole, making the toy move randomly. Size, texture and shape also matter. In tests cats presented with rat-sized toys behaved differently to those presented with mouse-sized toys. The larger potentially ‘dangerous’ toys were treated with caution, some refusing to touch them

at all. Small toys were pounced on, held down with front paws and bitten. Toys without legs or made of rubber were of less interest than fake fur or feathered items. Appetite was also found to have a role. Hungry cats hunted and ‘killed’ toy mice with much greater intensity. The next bit has only recently been understood. It turns out that unless the cat has opportunity to dissect the toy it plays with, so that the toy falls apart, the cat quickly loses interest. The problem is not the game but the toy. Interest in the ‘chase and kill’ game can be rekindled somewhat if the old ‘boring’ toy is quickly substituted with a new toy of a slightly different texture or shape, but it is the destruction of the toy that makes it truly interesting. Cats are much less willing to relinquish a toy they have ‘killed’. So to play hunt with your cat and keep him wanting more you need the right toy: • It should look like an animal- with legs, a furry or feathery texture and it needs to be made to move randomly. • Keep a stash of different toys and change them after every play session. • Toys that fall apart and can be put back together afterwards will satisfy your cat most. • Play when your cat is hungry. • Play at least three times a day. On pitch stutters & off the pitch triumphs at Champion Hill

t’s been a month with little to smile about for Hamlet supporters as a prolonged spell of bad results leaves the team hanging on for a play off place. Hopes of winning the title have started to feel like a distant memory, with the solitary London Senior Cup victory the only competitive win since our last update. The club did however have something to feel proud of as the community came together once again, this time to raise money for refugee organisations with a re-arranged game against FC Assyria. In partnership with local Councillor Jasmine Ali, the game was arranged to raise funds for the Southwark Refugees forum and the British Red Cross Syria appeal. 388 people made their way to Champion Hill to support the cause and see Hamlet run out 3-1 winners. The players and staff of FC Assyria greatly enjoyed playing in front of a much larger crowd than they are used to and it was a fantastic community response to the ongoing crisis, with even the Guardian newspaper discussing the event. Local organisations also showed their support, among them match sponsors Southwark Unison and East Dulwich pub - the Cherry Tree who donated the proceeds of their regular quiz night to the cause. Over £2600 has been raised for the charities involved and the excellent Dulwich2Dunkirk were also on hand to collect food donations to take over to Calais jungle. The locally based group are made up of Hamlet fans and with the support of the club have continued to show a fine example to the wider footballing world. As supporters mingled with the Assyria players in the bar post match and loaded up the donated provisions to the awaiting cars, there was a strong reminder of how much more than just results dictate what the club means. So onwards to April, the title maybe out of reach but with such a capable squad then a change in form could still see Hamlet progress through the play-offs. The next month will certainly be anything but dull as the season reaches its conclusion.

he black outfit standing in the middle of two teams wearing splendid football kits is enough to focus attention on any referee. If you speak to any referee or like myself you are a former football referee, you will learn that referees receive more than their fair share of attention. Often, referees receive ongoing advice on the field of play from players not concentrating on their game and from the blinkered spectator who often holds no knowledge or FA qualification in the laws of association football. Nevertheless, almost everyone, including ex-professional players often think it is their right to offer advice to the man or woman dressed in black. Just when the referee, thinks it could not be any worse, they find themselves being pursued by HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC). Some, albeit a growing number of referees have attracted the attention of HMRC. In recent years football associations have repeatedly made this position clear, “referees, instructors and assessors are not employed by the County FA and therefore are self-employed: it is the responsibility of each individual to declare their status and any income. Individuals should therefore be keeping records of match fees and expenses.” Those referees who were unaware of this information there was a clear reminder issued in Refereeing, Vol 21 February 2014. “As a self-employed individual, it is the responsibility of each referee to notify HMRC that they are self-employed and to report their income via self-assessment tax returns. If a referee is not already registered for self-assessment, they can register online via the HMRC website. If a referee is already registered for self-assessment and they have a unique tax reference number, then they should complete the form on the HMRC website. Referees are recommended to register with HMRC as soon as they start to receive fees, if they anticipate making a proﬁt.” The clarity of the advice offered to referees is loud, clear and accurate to ensure they stay on the

right side of HMRC. Referees cannot claim, it was like the offside or the tug of a player’s shirt they did not see in that split second on the field of play. If referees have missed it repeatedly, they can revisit the archives or seek professional help. Some FA publications suggest referees at level five and below may not be subject to any income tax after accounting for their related expenses. However, referees should all take personal responsibility for their own tax position. This view is echoed by a long standing referee who said, “it may be wise to suggest that all referees keep a record of the fees they earn during the season as well as their expenses as a minimum.” Despite the clarity from the Football Associations it is quite interesting that the London and Kent Football Associations have not mailed any communications to referees about their tax status. Moreover, there is no reference to remind referees of this position on their websites. Some referees receiving state benefits have secured starring roles on various television programmes for fraudulent claims and a failure to disclose their refereeing income. Unfortunately, unlike some referees, the Benefits Agency and HMRC do not regard the referees’ remuneration as their weekly pocket money. Irrespective of its level, it is recognised as income from self-employment. Whilst referees, may still have an excuse for not knowing if the ball crossed the line with the absence of technology, there is no such excuse for failing to comply with their responsibilities as a self-employed person. Readers should note that the above applies to other sports activists receiving income from their sporting pursuits.

Dulwich Festival 2016 | 6th - 15th May taking up residence at The Grafton Dance Centre, playing some infectious music and encouraging us all to cast off our inhibitions and take to the floor. On Thursday May 12th, Belair House provides the perfect surroundings to relax into the rich harmonies and soothing rhythms of Gerard and the Watchmen. A truly memorable afternoon with two outstanding and critically-acclaimed musicians is in store when violinist Levon Chilingirian OBE and pianist Carole Presland perform a thrilling programme including pieces by Handel, Grieg and Elgar. Celebrating our strong cultural exchange with Europe, the recital will take place on Sunday 15th May in the Old Library, Dulwich College. To mark the 400th anniversary of Edward Alleyn establishing Christ's Chapel in Dulwich Village, a number of events will explore the beautiful building, its magnificent organ, the shared history of Alleyn and Shakespeare and the power of creating a legacy. Over 200 artists will once again be throwing open the doors of their studios and homes to offer us an insight into the artistic process for Artists' Open House which will take place across both weekends of the Festival. The Dulwich Outdoor Gallery will this year have a further addition by artist Louis Masai who will be live-painting an outdoor piece at local nature reserve, Sydenham Hill Wood. Festivalgoers will be able to watch the painting being brought to life beginning on Friday 13th May and continuing throughout the weekend. New to the always popular walks programme will be a Dawn Chorus Walk and a Bat Walk at dusk for local wildlife enthusiasts led by the London

Wildlife Trust team - something for the early bird and the night owl! Paul Ewen, author of the celebrated comic novel ‘Francis Plug: How To Be A Public Author’ will lend his wry wit to the festival, joining us at Belair House on Sat 14th May. This is just a flavour of the line-up for this year's Festival, with much more on offer over the 10 days of its duration, including the always popular and well-attended Festival Fair, Love West Dulwich Fair and Dulwich Park Fair all of which will provide free entertainment for all ages. 10,000 metres of Double Yellow Lines Proposed

mazingly Southwark Council is proposing adding 10,000 metres of new double yellow lines around all the junction across the Dulwich area. This equates to a loss of around 2,500 car parking spaces. You could not make this up. If you think it’s hard to park near to your home now, wait until all these new double yellow lines are painted on our roads. For East Dulwich ward alone 2,720 metres are proposed or the loss of around 690 car parking spaces. The rationale is that the Highway Code, designed for roads with any speed limit, states people shouldn’t park with 10m of any junction. But of course with all our roads now having 20mph speed limits and for almost all of our junctions having no crashes such slavish following of the Highway Code for me is excessive. Local councillors have asked council officials to attend the next Dulwich Community Council to explain why all Dulwich junctions need this. However Dulwich Village ward councillors at the end of 2015 did agree such zealous car parking removal across the whole of the North Dulwich triangle area so I am genuinely concerned that without more public pressure against such measures they will happen. Golden Goodbyes Many people are cynical about politicians. I’ve generally found local politicians, both those that are successful in getting elected and those that stand for election and don’t win, to have their hearts in the right place. When I was first elected I had a fright when they asked for my bank details – I didn’t know an allowance came with the role and thought they were asking me to pay expenses. Sadly the old adage that power corrupts appears to becoming true in Southwark. The current administration has passed a new allowance that when a cabinet councillor or leader resigns or loses an election they will be paid up to £12,792. A golden goodbye. The argument being that if it’s good enough for MP’s why not these special cabinet 44 | SE22 - April 2016

councillors. Such payments will be confirmed by the majority party under a whipped vote of the Standards Committee. This is the first ever such proposed golden goodbyes for councillors in the country. I sincerely hope it doesn’t set a trend. What do you think?

Local GP’s Most GP’s work really really hard to give a good safe service to patients. Sadly local GP practice the Dulwich Medical Centre has recently been rated by the Care Quality Commission as ‘ Requires Improvement’. I’ve had a lot of casework over the last couple of years on this topic and had to make a formal complaint to have things investigated. So it’s great to hear that the owners of this business – GP practices have always been private businesses – have allocated more resources so people can get the appointments they need. If you have any reasons for complaint about the GP service you receive, do just that complain. They operate public services with large amounts of public money and should give you a good level of service. You can either complain directly to the GP practice itself or complain to the CQC and please copy me so I can collate CQC complaints and ensure they’re collectively investigated.

Motorbike Crime East Dulwich is a magnet for criminals wanting to steal motorbikes. We’ve funded ground anchors in peoples front gardens and are about to fund some more – if you’d like one get in touch. A Perfect Spring Garden

here is much to be said about focusing your garden on one season. If you’re trying hard to create all year interest in a small garden or within one border you will end up with all year disappointment. Unless you have a very large garden where you have space for a Winter garden, Summer borders and a Woodland Spring walk, it always pays off to focus on one season, or even to narrow it to one or two months so that at least your garden is at its peak at one particular time. And if you need to choose one season, well, Spring, is a splendid choice. The advantage with banking on Spring is that a lot of trees and shrubs that bear beautiful Spring blossoms tend to also offer spectacular Autumn foliage (I’m thinking June berries, cherry trees, crab apples...). So you’ll get a double return on your investment. Summer will still be glorious with all the herbaceous plants coming back up, all the shrubs and trees in full leaf and summer bulbs and annuals to punctuate it all and fill the gaps. Here is a list of ingredients to turn your garden into a Spring celebration bursting out of life, colour, blossom and exhilarating scents. For an average-sized garden in our hood, say 12meters long x 6 meters wide, you’ll need: • Some evergreen structural planting to constitute the frame of the garden. • 3 Spring-flowering shrubs • One or two Spring-flowering climber • At least one small tree with Spring blossom or a row of 3 or 5. • Hundreds of Spring flowering bulbs • A sprinkle of Spring fragrance Choose from the selection below.

I love the Turkish restaurant Hisar. Their kofte kebabs are excellent, I prefer the more relaxed café side over the restaurant.

What brought you here?

Coffee, black, always. Blackbird do great coffee and it’s been my second home for the last six years but the new place La Scala opposite do really great coffee too, so I’m spoilt for choice now.

I was living in what was then, a slightly a rough around the edges Peckham, and stumbled upon ED by accident and that was it, I moved here soon after and have been around here since then. Although I’ve switched residence from SE22 to SE15, my business is still in ED and I now have a ten-minute commute.

What do you most value about the area? Having Peckham Rye park on my doorstep, my daughter loves it there. And the community feel of the whole area, it does feel like a village in some ways. It’s nice to walk down Lordship Lane and bump into people you know, it’s not that common when you live in London.

What one thing would you change? House prices, it’s crazy what people will pay for a terraced house these days!

Do you know your neighbours? At the studio, yes. I have Anne Marie who owns Angel Upholstery on one side and Becca who owns HB Therapy on the other. They’re great and we help each other out when needed. 48 | SE22 - April 2016

Cafe, pub or bar? Café, definitely, I’m not much of a drinker these days and am happy with a coffee, a pastry and a chat with the locals.

Where’s your favourite place to walk? One tree Hill, it has amazing views of London. It’s a great place to get away from it all, you almost feel like you’re in the countryside until you turn around a see the awesome London skyline.
