2016 Front Garden Competition Winners

T

he prize winners have been announced for the Dulwich Society’s 2016 front garden competition. Some 50 entries were received, with the overall high standard making judging a challenging task. The competition was open to all Dulwich households. First Prize, of £100 in garden vouchers, went to 101 Woodwarde Road (Above LEFT). Whilst a relatively small front garden, it had strong kerb side appeal. This was helped by a good structure and the use of varied planting including hydrangeas providing both showmanship and interest through different leaf shapes, heights and colour. A vertical dimension was also achieved through a climbing hydrangea, there were buddleias for bees and butterflies, and window boxes added a final flourish. The garden also showed a high standard of husbandry and maintenance. Five Gold Prizes of £50 each went to entries for

82 Henslowe Road (Above RIGHT), 17, 142 and 148 Burbage Road (Below LEFT), and 186 Peckham Rye. Five Silver prizes of £25 each went to entries for 60 and 76 Burbage Road, 134 Court Lane, 50 Park Hall Road and 88 Woodwarde Road. Two Special Prizes of £25 have been given – to 171 Rosendale Road (Below RIGHT), for their tree pit planting in the nearby traffic island, and to Glyn Davies of 130 Court Lane for maintaining the neatest front garden in Dulwich over many years. All prize winners also received a certificate designed by illustrator and artist Greg Becker, who lives in East Dulwich. Jeremy Prescott, Chair of the Dulwich Society’s Garden Group, commented: “We would like to congratulate all the entrants, as well as the prize winners. Their attractive front gardens will have given and will continue to give pleasure to local residents, and I hope will inspire others to copy them.” SE22 - August 2016 | 37

August News By Sarah Pylas

S

chool’s out for summer and I hope this glorious sunshine is too! I approach the end of every school year with mixed emotions. On one hand, I am happy to be free of the school routine and look forward to a long stretch of lazy mornings and afternoons playing outside in the sun. On the other, it is a reminder of how fast the years are passing by. It seems like only yesterday I dropped my 4-year old off for his first day in reception and in a few short weeks, he will go into Year 3. I admit I had a little tear in my eye on his last day of term as we said goodbye to his wonderful teacher and the end of his infant school experience. There were moments in July when it felt like November, but not a drop (or 300,000 buckets) of heavy rain could dampen the spirit of the school summer fairs! Families flocked in their hundreds to hook-a-duck, bounce on inflatable castles, or just hang out by the popular Prosecco bars. Other highlights included a night with popular party band, The Hit Men, who performed at Aquarius Golf Club. You would be hard-pressed to find cheaper drinks, or better views, anywhere else in the area. The North Cross Road Experience had not happened before going to print, but this live music event held by local talent - with food and drinks provided by many of our favourite establishments - promised to be a huge hit. Meanwhile, over in the village, Angela popped into Rocca to meet Lesley O’Mara from Link Age Southwark. Lesley has recently been appointed as trustee in charge of fund raising. Look out for some fab events in the autumn, raising funds for this much loved local charity. While many of us may be flying off to warmer climes this month, there is still plenty to do for those opting to staycation at home. The outdoor Luna Cinema has a fun packed programme of films on

at Dulwich Park – Dirty Dancing and The Breakfast Club to name but two. Both bring back many fond memories of my youth, as well as some not so fond ‘I carried a watermelon’ moments of my own. The Horniman Museum and Gardens are holding various family activities over the summer, including a nature trail, butterfly count and pond dipping. These events are very popular, so booking is advised. Finally, if you visited me on my Greek Dips stall at the Dulwich Festival Fair earlier this year, you may be interested to know that our homemade Yiayia’s Kouzina houmous is now available to buy in General Store on Bellenden Road. Today General Store, tomorrow… As always, you can find details of all local news, events, and ticket information over on our website. Hectic Host

Mussels Three Ways

T

his month the Hectic Host has good news for lovers of shellfish. It seems that the old adage that one should not eat shellfish when there is NOT an R in the month is little more than out dated folklore. The saying, that can be traced back to the 16th century, referred originally only to oysters and is from a time predating refrigeration; so by the time the oysters made it from the sea to your table during the spring and summer months you would be wise to avoid them. That said it is not a good idea to forage mussels during the warmer months, low tides can carry higher levels of toxins. The seafood sold today from any of our wonderful fishmongers (F. C. Soper in Nunhead and Moxons in East Dulwich) is perfectly safe anytime of the year. Mussels are packed with nutrients; they are high in B12 vitamins and provide a readily absorbed source of many other B & C vitamins, amino acids, vital minerals including iron, manganese, phosphorus, potassium, selenium and zinc. This is good news as the dish we intend serving to guests this month could not be more simple. We suggest taking three steaming pots to the table and allow people to share.

Moules Marinères Take 2 kilos of mussels and place in a bowl of cold water, if any float throw them away. If any are open and you cannot close them by pinching together, throw them away too. Pull out the beards and remove any barnacles and bits with a paring knife. Finely chop one large onion and fry in butter in a pan until soft, and 100 ml of white wine and pour in the mussels and cover the pan. Cook for 5 minutes until all the mussels are open and stir in 2 tablespoons of cream. I have discovered by mistake that leftover champagne makes a delicious base for the stock, it does not matter if it is flat or not, just pour it in. The dryness compliments the richness of the cream perfectly. 12 | SE22 - August 2016

Moules au Curry This may sound a little odd to us but it is on the menu alongside Moules Marinières in every bistro in France. Follow the recipe exactly the same as above but add mild curry powder at the same time as adding the cream.

Moules à la Normande Follow the initial recipe but add one finely chopped apple to the onion as you fry it in the butter. Instead of white wine add 100 mls of Calvados and cook in the same way adding cream at the end. Instead of starch heavy fried potatoes – which are delicious dunked in the mussel sauce - cut sweat potatoes into chunky chip sized pieces and lay on baking paper on a baking tray. Place in an oven preheated to 200 degrees and bake for 30 minutes, turning a couple of times throughout. Serve with a chilled mug of beer or Normandy cider and lots of brown bread.

Salad • • • • • • • • • • • •

(This photo is from our July Supper Club)

Salad Nicoise For Two

1 ∞ Cups Double Cream 250g Small New Potatoes 150g Green Beans 1 Caramelised Onion 10 Quails Eggs Hard Boiled Eggs (peeled) 200g Rocket 5 Tbsp Filippo Berio Olive Oil 150g Sun Dried Tomatoes 2 Tbsp Balsamic Vinegar 350g Fresh Tuna Juice ∞ Lemon Garden Radishes are optional

Dressing (can be adjusted to taste) • • • • • •

50g Black Olives 5 Anchovy Fillets 1 Garlic Clove Juice ∞ Lemon 4 Tbsp Filipo Berio Olive Oil 2 Tbsp Balsamic Vinegar

Method 1) Put the dish(es) you plan to use into the fridge for about an hour before you start to chill. 2) Make the dressing. Tip the olives, anchovies and garlic into a large mortar and mash with a pestle until you have a very rough paste. Scrape into a bowl, if you like, stir in the lemon juice, olive oil and vinegar, then set aside. (This can be adjusted according to your own taste). 3) Cut the onions into quarters and the tomatoes in half and cook them in the oven on a low heat – around 1300C for 20minutes. Cut the potatoes in half and part boil them. Cook the beans in boiling salted water until tender – they should have a slight crunch. 4) Halve the potatoes and heat 2 tablespoons oil into a grill pan. Place the potatoes cut-side down in the pan and sizzle for about 4 minutes until the potatoes gain grooves. 5) To cook the tuna, place a non-stick frying pan over a high heat, then turn the heat down to medium and add 1 tablespoon of Filippo Berio olive oil. Season the tuna generously, then sear for 4 minutes, leaving it undisturbed in the pan to brown. Turn over and continue to cook for 4 minutes on the other side. This will give you very rare tuna. For well done Tuna cook for an additional 4minutes on each side. Make sure you let the tuna rest for a few minutes before serving. 6) To serve, whisk the remaining oil and vinegar with the lemon juice in a small bowl and toss in the remaining ingredients apart from the tuna which should be thinly sliced on top of the salad.

Fitness Tips

The many faces of fitness

T

here are many contributors to good physical, emotional and mental fitness, and exercise is just one of them. Whenever I talk about health and fitness, I use the term healthspan rather than lifespan because that’s what we’re all striving for. We want to be healthy and able to live useful and remarkable lives for as long as possible and that’s healthspan. This month I’ll give you five top tips about how to keep yourself fit, healthy and energised for the demands of a busy life.

Watch Your Stress Levels Too much stress can profoundly change your body, affecting the immune system, your digestion and the overall performance of your body down to a cellular level. Managing your stress is possible, and you can do something about it if you’re willing to prioritise your health and take a few simple steps towards regaining control. Move, dance, rest, explore, indulge, create – don’t let life rule you, you’re in charge!

Treat Yourself Booking yourself a massage is a wonderful gift to your body and will help relieve tension and encourage blood flow which helps rejuvenate your cells. For a really indulgent experience, I recommend the Hammam on Forest Hill Road if you like being pampered; I came out of there last week feeling amazing and it’s very clean, quiet and hygienic. They’ve really brought the Turkish Spa to South East London.

Prioritise Your Sleep We all know the importance of sleep but too few people make it a priority. There are a few simple lifestyle hacks that you can implement to improve your sleep; avoid screens for 90 minutes before bed, leave your phone in another room, use blackout curtains and avoid sugar, alcohol and caffeine several hours before retiring. Use the evening to wind down from your day and quieten the mind, ready for a restful sleep. 16 | SE22 - August 2016

Walk Everywhere Think about your journeys and consider if you could walk instead. You burn approximately 120 calories for every mile you walk, you’re moving your muscles, tendons and joints and getting blood flowing through the body. We were not designed to sit; our bodies are meant to move, and if you walk regularly you will be prolonged your healthspan. Try leaving the car at home for at least one day a week and see what difference it makes to your activity levels and wellbeing.

Laugh With Friends This one is very important! A healthy body is a happy body, and nothing beats a good laugh with friends. Do you regularly prioritise a night out with pals? Do you make time to watch comedy or just have fun, whether that’s playing games, cinema, a night out? It’s easy to get caught up in the seriousness of life, particularly if you read the news which is rarely cheerful. Try looking up and smiling more, and prioritise having fun! Pets Corner

My dog won’t come when I call

P

oor recall has to be one of the top reasons for calling in a dog trainer. It is not unusual to see exasperated owners anxiously speed-walking around the park repeatedly calling their dog’s name while the hound in question is nowhere to be seen. Equally common is the dog that dances around enticingly, just out of range of its owner, refusing to have its lead put on. Poor recall is not only inconvenient it is also dangerous; the ability to call your dog away from something could one day save his life. Of course, you won’t be surprised to learn that the fault lies not with the dog but with the owner. Recall is a vital command and has to be built with care throughout the dog’s early years before it is reliable. Alas, many owners stop training after puppy school. The fact is most puppies do have good recall- it makes sense for young animals to stay close to the security of owners, but this all falls apart at adolescence when the youngster discovers just how many good things freedom has to offer. With patience and consistent application of training it is possible to achieve a good recall, here are my top tips: Bite the bullet and keep training daily until your dog is through adolescence, don’t put all your faith into what you achieve at a puppy course. Once hormones kick in at puberty the brain is overwhelmed with lots of new information. Puppy obedience, and with it recall, is temporarily pushed to the bottom of the learning pile. Remember dogs learn in a highly contextual way. Recall in class is different to recall in the park. Training in the park has to be built from scratch too. Don’t run before you can walk. If your pup has learned to return to you under highly controlled conditions in class, don’t expect him to do the same after he has been free running and playing in the park for half an hour with other dogs. Think about the reward on offer for returning to you - is it as fun for the dog as playing with other dogs? Most pups will choose play - fighting with other dogs to the same old food treat from its owner. After all, if you were to offer any hormonal human teenager a slice of cake as reward for coming

20 | SE22 - August 2016

home early from a wild night out with their mates, which do you think they would choose? Only ever call your dog once or twice. Repeated use of the command when the dog blanks you reduces the potency of the command. Ideally, every recall should be successful first time. This means the owner has to judge how distracted the dog is, how far away the dog is, and for how long the dog has been separated from them (the three D’s, distance, distraction, duration). Use a long line. This gives you control and means you can gently reel the dog in when you need to without using your recall word and failing. As a principle and especially if the dog is on a line, do not let him have extended play sessions with other dogs. At this age we want your dog to focus on you. So keep dog interactions short and sweet. It will be clear to most that your dog wants to run and play in the park so start jogging with your pup on the line. Start to play with your dog in the park. Use commands like ‘sit’, ‘wait’ and ‘leave’ to heighten control and make the game more interesting. Finally, never ever chastise your dog for not returning when you call. No dog will willingly return to an angry owner. Think about what has gone wrong and aim to put it right on the next recall.

Garden Talk

Gardening Leave

A

s well as planning your holiday wardrobe, a few hours work in the garden before you go away will go a long way to ensure you come back to a thriving garden.

Lawns Mow the lawn a few days before you leave but don’t cut it too short if the weather is hot and dry – long grass copes much better with drought than short grass. Edge with long handled shears to neaten it up and clear edges of weeds and areas for slugs to lurk in. If the grass is long when you get back keep your blades raised for the first few cuts. And don’t despair if it’s yellow. Grass is pretty tough and will soon green up again after a good downpour.

Containers Put your potted plants on saucers, or even something bigger like a paddling pool, to collect possible rainwater. (But check the forecast, as plants don’t like to be in standing water.) Soaked capillary matting can also get them through a week without being watered. Moving pots to semi shade can protect them against drying out and grouping them together will help them shade each other and share humidity. If there’s room, sink favourite plants into soil to keep them cool and drench the surrounding earth. A mulch of mini bark or grit will help keep the moisture in too, but water well first.

Borders Cut repeat flowering plants like cosmos and roses before you go away and give a lovely bouquet to a friend to ensure you come home to lovely blooms instead of a sea of fallen petals. If you’re away for three weeks remove all the flowers as well as the dead heads. Tatty looking hardy geraniums can be cut right back, as can nepeta and geum. With flowering spikes like delphiniums or penstemon, just cut off the spent flower stem. Weeds are easier to pull up when they’re small, so removing them before you go away is really worth it. Take care to dig out the whole root of perennial weeds such as thistle, bindweed and dandelion. Mulching your borders with bulky organic matter such as compost, well26 | SE22 - August 2016

rotted manure or bark will keep weeds down and moisture in – make sure you drench the soil first. Or just concentrate on newly planted or thirsty shrubs and perennials and don't worry so much about drought tolerant ones like iris, lavender and rosemary. If you go away at lot, think about growing more drought tolerant plants. As a rule grey/silver, small or fleshy leaved plants such as stachys, verbena and sedum will survive without much water once they’re established. If the forecast is for lots of rain, remember to protect plants like hostas from slugs – try organic wool slug pellets. Check stakes on tall perennials – a windy summer gale plus rain can quickly flatten your garden.

Fruit and veg Weeding should be a priority, go over with a hoe to remove weed seedlings and finish off by hand, weeding anything close to plants. Pick as much as you can from repeat flowering crop like peas and beans, removing all the pods and pick all the developing courgettes - otherwise you’ll come home to marrows galore. Water thoroughly before you go but ideally persuade a friend to come and pick in return for watering. Net brassicas to keep off cabbage white butterflies. Tie in anything that needs it such as tomatoes, beans and sweet peas. Barbara Samitier - Garden Designer www.barbarasamitiergardens.co.uk

The Bigger Picture Film Club Presents

SMILES OF A SUMMER NIGHT

Directed by Ingmar Bergman with Ulla Jacobsson, Eva Dahlbeck, Harriet Andersson, Gunnar Bjornstrand, Bibi Andersson

108 mins

Cert PG

1955

An exquisite romantic comedy in which six individuals find love during an endless summer night. One of cinema’s greatest erotic comedies, Smiles of a Summer Night ushered Bergman onto the international scene. Over the course of an endless northern summer night, the feelings of the protagonists boil over into seduction, flirtation, deception and adultery. With an air of French farce the film is not entirely without elements of darkness so typical of Bergman, but these are transcended by the smiles of the title.

Financial Matters

Managing on Budget SE Style

T

he management and allocation of scarce resources is the basic economic problem that has bedevilled individuals and policy makers since the beginning of time. This is often reflected in that feeling of, there’s lots more days left than money, soon after pay day. This is not just a challenge at levels of low income, as it is often said, ‘the more money we have, the more problems we get’. Some of our SE21/SE22 readers were recently presented with this allocation of resources problem as follows, how to manage on a budget? Two respondents, were only keen to share their experiences with us. Alison, a retail assistant working in Dulwich, with an 18 year old daughter in full-time education, said, “my rent and council tax swallows up the lion share of my wages, so I am forced to manage my money very carefully. Several years ago, I got into a nasty mess, so now I keep a meticulous record of all my direct debits leaving my bank account. Writing down my direct debits helps me stay in control of my finances. I don’t want to go back to that mess again.” Despite the financial challenges and the prospects for the future not looking much brighter according to Alison, she was very upbeat and radiating our missing summer glow. In addition she explained that her financial survival was being propped up by her bank overdraft. “I try my best not to exceed my overdraft as it is a life saver. With an 18 year old in full-time education, cash is always tight. The cost of living seems to be forever increasing with most people, it seems we’re all in the same boat, whether single or two parent families.” Vincent, an apprentice in SE21, living at home with his mother and sister said, “I help mum with the household bills, so I have to keep a watchful eye on my funds. To keep control of my money I manage three accounts: my current account which receives all my income and pays out all bills by standing order on pay day plus one. On the same day, I transfer a fixed sum to

34 | SE22 - August 2016

savings account number one. The remainder less £150 goes into savings account number two. The £150 in my current account is my monthly survival budget. My savings account number two is used for all my personal hygiene spending, such as dry cleaning.“ Our two readers stressed the importance of monitoring their bank accounts. This was reminiscent of those days in local government finance when it was a daily routine to identify the incoming and outgoing cash. Alison said, “I keep a regular check on my bank statement to avoid any nasty surprises”. Vincent advised, “I receive a weekly text of my account balance from bank but I still check my balance daily as a back-up.” Alison and Vincent provided the following tips for surviving on a budget: 1) Keep a record of your money coming in and when it is due to go out 2) Review your spending pattern and rein it in otherwise, you’ll lose control 3) Eliminate unnecessary spending, such as chocolate 4) If you have an overdraft, do not go over your limit 5) Consider streamlining your social life expenditure Alison saved her best advice for last, “despite living on budget, it is important to try and maintain a good credit score, as this comes in handy to obtain finance for the luxuries.” With such great local budgetary advice our new Chancellor may need to head south to get some tips as he plans to abandon the austerity boat.

Dulwich Hamlet FC - News

Familiar faces return to Hamlet

F

ootball returns to Champion Hill this month after a busy summer for manager Gavin Rose. A number of familiar faces have moved onto new clubs but there was also news of returning heroes. Commanding keeper Phil Wilson, a terrace favourite during his time with the club has moved on to divisional rivals Mersham after losing his place towards the end of last season to the on loan Preston Edwards. Edwards secured a rather unfortunate world record earlier in his career after receiving the most quickly recorded red card for a goalkeeper. However during his time at Hamlet he has looked anything but rash and to secure a player of his calibre must be seem as a relative coup for the club. Perhaps less surprising was the departure of young defender Ethan Pinnock, named player of the year for the last two seasons it was only a matter of time before he got the opportunity to step up that he deserved. This has materialised as he moves onto Conference National side Forest Green Rovers. Pinnock will be replaced at the heart of defence by the return of the last young centre back to leave Champion Hill for the professional game. In 2012 Premier League scouts from clubs as big as Manchester United and Liverpool were flooding to watch Hamlet’s Michael Chambers and it was eventually Crystal Palace that won the race for his

signature. Injury limited his development whilst at Selhurst Park and he eventually moved onto Welling United where he spent last season. Still only 22, the move back to familiar surroundings could be the perfect opportunity for him to re-launch his career. Perhaps the most exciting of all is the return of promotion hero Danny Carr. The now 22 year old striker managed 17 goals as he helped Hamlet to the Isthmian South title in 2012. Picked up after his release from Reading, via a brief spell at Eastbourne Borough, Rose breathed new life into Carr’s career after converting him from a winger to a striker. Trials at Liverpool, Leeds and Charlton soon followed before he secured a move to Huddersfield Town. After a series of loan moves, Danny moved onto Cambridge but was released at the end of last season. The skilful, composed striker will hopefully have benefitted from time in the professional game and his return to Hamlet is sure to fill supporters with optimism for the new season. The league fixtures are due for release anytime, so keep an eye on the club website for more details. www.pitchero.com/clubs/dulwichhamlet/ Dulwich Hamlet Supporters’ Trust info@dhst.org.uk | 07951 640099 @dhstorg

Dulwich Society

Good Luck Exam Results

Before Going On Holiday Many of us will be fortunate enough to be going on summer holidays. So this is a good time to think about holiday security to minimize the risk of us being burgled while we’re away – I hope this checklist is helpful: 1) Check your home insurance cover - ensure new purchases are covered. 2) Install timers – evening light, invest in a TV simulator e.g. “Fake TV”, leave a radio on a timer during the day. Appear to be at home (but don’t drive your neighbours mad with timer loud controlled devices). 3) Leave curtains and blinds open - closed or half closed curtains throughout the daytime apparently can make it obvious you’re away. 4) Mow lawns before going away, cut hedges and plants down to below chest height so people can see your front door and windows and anyone tampering with them or generally acting suspiciously. 5) Don’t forget the postman! - If you are going away for a long period of time consider signing up to the Royal Mail Keepsafe™ holding deliveries for up to 66 days. It starts at £13.50 for up to 17 days. This will ensure a pile of post doesn’t collect on any visible doormat making it obvious you’re away, and if you still have milk/papers delivered cancel them too. 6) Keep valuable items out of sight - If items are small, consider keeping them in a lockable safe or hidden out of the way. 7) Don’t announce you’re going on holiday on social media - If you want to share your holiday experiences with your friends, share them when you get back. 8) Ask a trusted neighbour to keep an eye out for when you’re away – they can ensure things like letters and leaflets are pushed all the way through letterboxes. 38 | SE22 - August 2016

9) Leave a contact telephone number of a key holder with the immediate neighbour if they are not your key holder. 10) Securely lock all windows, doors, gates, bicycles, garages and sheds - do not leave spare keys anywhere in sight. 12) Remember addresses on luggage labels can also tell a thief you’re away. 12) Make time for a final check - before leaving ensure your home is as safe and secure as possible. 13) Have a great holiday! When you have more time the following online crime prevention survey I’ve found useful and recommend you try it out and find where you need to improve your homes security - http://tinyurl. com/j7p39jy And if you’re not a member of a Neighbourhood Watch scheme – which often bring insurance discounts please get in touch.

EU Referendum Locally people voted roughly 3:1 to remain in the European Union. But the overall result, as everyone knows, is Brexit won. This has clearly result in huge unanswered questions and lots of uncertainty. Added to this roughly 1 in 10 local residents were born in fellow EU countries. So far they’ve been given no assurance that no matter how long they’ve lived and worked here, brought up or bringing up families they may be told to leave. The current government hasn’t ruled out deportations. If like me you think this is illiberal, unfair, inhumane or just plain daft please sign up to one or both of these petitions: http://change.libdems.org.uk/right-to-stay www.change.org/p/eu-offer-european-citizenshipto-uk-citizens Councillor James Barber cllrjamesbarber@gmail.com | 07900 227366 www.jamesbarber.org.uk | @cllrjamesbarber

Holiday Swimming Tips

Fun & learning through water…

B

abies are born ready to play, and water is a wonderful, natural sensory play area, where your baby can learn and have fun – especially in the summer. Giving your baby water confidence is the best way you can prepare them for swimming and being safe in the water for life.

Newborns Having spent nine months suspended in fluid in the womb, babies generally love the liberating sensation of floating freely in warm water and it’s never too early to get them in a pool - as long as the water’s warm enough, above 30 degrees for a baby older than 12 weeks (or heavier than 12lbs), and above 32 degrees if they’re younger or smaller. Popping on a warming wetsuit can really help those babies who feel the cold.

• Water resistant sun cream and a hat • Wetsuit for cooler pools • Toys – bath toys, inflatable balls, plastic floats

Six Months To A Year

Holiday Swimming

Now your baby is more active, bath time starts to be an altogether more splashy experience! Encourage your baby to splash and kick. Trying showing them how to pour water from one cup to another, or use a watering can to sprinkle it.

Heading to the beach? It’s safe to take your baby in the sea, although it’s not recommended for babies under six months because of the water temperature and saltiness. Be aware of waves which can knock little ones over, so keep hold of them at all times, even if the water seems calm. You should stay in the shallows and make sure you don’t stay in too long.

Toddlers And Beyond Baths, paddling pools and sprinklers, your toddler will love water however it comes! You can buy all sorts of toys for bath times– boats, foam letters, crayons for drawing – but empty plastic bottles, pots and cups are just as good for pouring and experimenting. You can also teach your little one to blow bubbles and try making different sounds under the water. Older babies and toddlers enjoy songs and water toys like plastic ducks and fish. If your child can walk, they may enjoy playing in the water where they can touch the bottom. Keep the mood light and let your toddler dictate the pace.

Kit For Fun In The Pool • Swim nappies • UV suit SPF 50+ for outdoor pools

Kit For Fun In The Sea • Swim nappies • UV suit SPF 50+ • Wetsuit – should be a snug fit • Water resistant sun cream and a hat • Plastic ‘jelly’ shoes for jumping in the waves Whatever you do with your babies this summer have fun and stay safe.
