Welcome to issue number 150 of SE22. It only seems like yesterday since I started my first magazine but to rack up 150 issues feels like a great achievement. As always I could not do this without the support of local businesses and residents; so thank you! Last month I was delighted to be at the English Heritage Blue Plaque unveiling on the road I live; find out more on pages 20 & 21. I have noticed how quiet it goes during the Summer months. Hopefully everyone is having a wonderful time on holiday. However if you are staying around Dulwich, don’t worry, there is plenty to keep you occupied. Blue Plaque Honour for Sir Henry Cotton
S
ir Henry Cotton, still regarded as the greatest British golf with three Open victories to his name, was honoured on the 11th July with an English Heritage Blue Plaque. The plaque was unveiled by Peter Alliss at Sir Henry’s childhood home at 47 Crystal Palace Road. Henry and his brother Leslie joined the Aquarius Golf Club in East Dulwich in 1920. The club hosted a lovely lunch for all the attendees of the unveiling including Peter Alliss himself. chool’s out for summer and the rosé is in! The run-up to end of term came with all the usual chaos as we frantically tied up loose work ends, put up gazebos for the school summer fair, watched little legs race with eggs on spoons, visited the dentist, optician and hairdresser, signed teacher thank-you cards, organised gifts, packed picnics, blubbed over glowing school reports and had a last-minute panic over a forgotten homework project due in the last week of term…. arghhhhh! With so much to fit in, it is any wonder I found time to socialise at all, but somehow I always manage to squeeze in a few ice-cold glasses of rosé when the sun is shining. The garden of The Rye pub in Peckham provided a lovely sunny spot for drinks with friends who were visiting from out of town. It was also nice to venture a bit further than my good old local, Watson’s General Telegraph, on Forest Hill Road. Miss Tapas in Peckham was another good find for a catch-up with friends. They don’t take bookings, but if you just walk-in they promise to look after you. On my way to drop off my son at his friend’s birthday party at The East Dulwich Picturehouse - they watched Boss Baby on the big screen and then had a pizza party in the conservatory – I bumped into the team from Celia Hammond Animal Trust, who had just rescued a mum cat and her 4 kittens from under the floorboards of the old chip shop on Landcroft Road! The mum cat and her kittens had become trapped inside the shop when the estate agent secured the back of the building. What an amazing job the rescue team does! Good news for drama students at the East Dulwich Drama Academy as classes will now continue, but in a different venue to be confirmed. We went to watch my son in his final showcase ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ at Goose Green Primary School. He played the parts of Fairy 3, Fairy 4 and Fairy 6 and was fab – as they all were! As the curtain went down, we darted back up the hill to catch the last hour of the Hawaiian Luau at Fairlawn Primary School. I hope to spend a lot of this month sunning myself on a beautiful Greek island, but I will be back in time for my birthday at the end of August. As with every year, I will be sharing the

celebrations with my son, whose birthday falls the day before mine. ‘We’ are having a football party and 4 boys back to the house for a movie and sleepover – joy! Now the summer holidays are well upon us, there is plenty to do locally for young and old alike. Heavenly Hydrangea Hydrangeas are gorgeous shrubs – their great mounds of delicate yet showy flowers often take on pinky hues into autumn and can be dried for winter use too. There are masses of varieties, colours and sizes to choose from. Here’s my pick.
Hydrangea Macrophylla H.macrophylla go pink in alkaline and blue in acidic soil. To guarantee colour – go for white. There are two types, mophead, with large, globular heads and lacecap with flattened heads of tiny flowers surrounded by sterile florets. They’re happiest in part shade but can take sun – & like to be kept hydrated. H. Macrophylla ‘Madame Emile Mouillere’ - A flamboyant white mophead becoming pink tinged into autumn – great for lighting up a partly shady border. H. Macrophylla ‘Westfalen’ - A compact cultivar with bright green leaves and large rich purple mophead blooms. Good for smaller gardens. H. Macrophylla ‘Veitchii’ - A small, elegant and hardy lacecap hydrangea with white sterile florets, that turn pink as they age. H. Macrophylla ‘Rotchwanz’ - A more unusual lacecap with deep pink to wine-colored starry flowers & dark green leaves flushed red. A stunner.
Hydrangea paniculata Hydrangea paniculata have longer conical shaped flowers and add colour later in the season. They’re happiest in rich soils with partial sun. H. Paniculata ‘Limelight’ - A popular hydrangea with heads of lime-green flowers that fade to cream then deep pink in autumn. ‘Little Lime’, is a compact version ideal for smaller gardens. H. Paniculata ‘Tardiva’ - Lovely late flowering hydrangea with creamy-white flowers – good for a large sheltered border. H. Paniculata Pinky Winky - A very pretty variety has elongated heads of flowers that turn pink from the base – giving the flowers a two-tone effect. I’ve seen it looking great in a patio container. H. Paniculata ‘Vanille Fraise’ - A popular variety with large creamy white flower heads turning pink & then russet red in autumn. Loose & spreading in habit. H. Paniculata ‘Kyushu’ - Dainty & perfect for pots. 12 | SE22 - August 2017 Janine
Other Arborescens hydrangeas, from America, can tolerate hotter dryer conditions. Best loved is H. ‘Annabelle’ with huge globes of fresh lacy creamcoloured flowers. ‘Strong Annabelle’ is new variety with tougher stems. The oak leaved hydrangea H. Quercifolia is another American variety with oak leaved shaped leaves that turn a dramatic pinky red. ‘Snow Queen’ has large cones of white flowers. With a spreading habit it’s best in a partly shady border with space.
Hydrangea Care Planting: Add plenty of organic material such as garden compost to help retain moisture. Watering: Water well in first season and in dry summers tip a bucket of water over the roots about once a week. Pruning: In spring cut back flowering stems to within a few buds of the woody framework, then mulch. Drying: Pick at their peak or as they fade. Feeding: Use a slow-release fertiliser or sprinkle blood, fish and bone in spring. If leaves are yellowing, water with liquid seaweed. Staking: Fluted plants support placed over the plant in early spring, or bamboo canes tied gently to floppy steams will help keep plants upright. Companions: Under plant with Liriope muscari, Vinca minor or Geranium ‘Rozanne’. Dark dramatic flower such as penstemon ‘Raven’ or Clematis ‘Black Prince’ contrast well with white hydrangea varieties. Or go for spire shaped perennials such as Veronicastrum virginicum ‘Album’, or perovskia ‘Blue Spire’.

Food & Drink with Suzanne James Croque Monsier Hasselback Potatoes with Prosciutto di San Daniele & Grana Padano The recipe below brings together the glorious combination of sweet soft potato, salty ham and cheese, and the delightful zing of wholegrain mustard. Whilst this can be served as a side dish it makes a wonderful light meal in it’s own right. Serves: 4. Prep Time: 10 minutes Cook Time: 1 hour 5 minutes
Ingredients • 4 baking potatoes (approx. 700g) • 4 tsp Filippo Berio Olive Oil • Salt • 70g Grana Padano Cheese • 6 slices Prosciutto di San Daniele • 4 tsp wholegrain mustard
Method 1) Pre-heat your oven to 2200C / 2000C fan oven. 2) Using a sharp knife, cut slits in your potatoes, these should be about half a centimetre apart and should go about two-thirds of the way through the potato. 3) Brush the tops of the potatoes with olive oil (about 1 tsp on each) and then sprinkle over a little salt. 4) Bake the potatoes for 1 hour (the cooking time may vary depending on the size of your potatoes). Every 20 minutes, brush the potatoes with the oil they’re sitting in. If you notice the edges getting dark brown and crispy, loosely cover the potatoes in foil to stop them from burning.
5) While the potatoes are cooking thinly slice the Grana Padano Cheese. 6) Once the potatoes have been baking for an hour, use a knife to check if they’re soft in the centre, if not return them to the oven for a few more minutes. If they are, remove them from the oven and carefully push the sliced cheese into the slits. It doesn’t need to go into every slit, about every 3 is fine. 7) Return the potatoes to the oven for 5 minutes to melt the cheese. 8) Remove the potatoes from the oven. Put a teaspoon of wholegrain mustard onto each potato and use the back of a spoon to spread it across the top. Roughly tear the Prosciutto di San Daniele and push it into some of the empty slits (as with the cheese, one in about every 3 slits is fine).

Meditation Stressed? Tired? Burning out? How 10 minutes of meditation a day can be a game changer for busy professionals
This is how my day used to start The alarm goes off, but I don’t feel rested or reenergised. I get up after hitting the snooze button two or three times and rush to the shower. Within 25 minutes of waking, I’m usually locking the front door and heading down the road to the station. Whilst on the train, I’ll check my BlackBerry for emails, I’ll look at my calendar and see what meetings I have ahead of me and when I might get a chance to take a break that day. I get off the train and head into the City via a coffee shop and pick up a pastry and a coffee, then hurry to my desk where I usually arrive bang on time. I then spend the day at my desk or in meetings, usually taking a short lunch-break to buy something that I then eat at my desk. When I get home at the end of the day I’m tired, possibly agitated and lacking in energy. The next day, it starts again.
Does this sound familiar? When I travel into the City now (I do my best to avoid rush hour), I look at the faces of the commuters as they hurry from place to place. Most people look harassed and fatigued. Whilst you can’t necessarily change your job overnight, you can change how you feel about it. We all form our own emotional soundtrack that we play when certain events are occurring, such as a workday or commute. It is possible to alter your reactions and feelings about these events and change your physiology at the same time.
Meditating your way to a better day There is something you can do that takes just ten minutes a day and is very powerful for changing your stress response and overall physiology. That thing is meditation. There are many benefits to mediation, and I’ve recently been experimenting with it myself, and I’m really enjoying it. Some of the benefits I’ve noticed are: • An increased sense of calm and fewer feelings of agitation / frustration 16 | SE22 - August 2017

• Increased resilience and a more tempered response to stressful events • Improved concentration Other benefits that have been observed in scientific studies include: Improved immune system, Improved fertility, Improved creativity and reduction in pain.
How I practice meditation I’ve been using a couple of apps on a trial basis to see which I prefer – Headspace and Calm. Both offer a free trial (ten days for Headspace and seven days for Calm) before asking you to sign up for a small annual fee to unlock all the functionality. I spend ten minutes each morning doing a 10 minute meditation, and I do feel it has made a positive difference to my day. It helps me start the day in a calm manner rather than rushed (although my morning routine is very different from how it used to be!), I practice deep breathing as I do it, and I open the blinds and window to get some natural light in and fresh air. It’s a great way to start the day. If I’m busy or feel a bit stressed out, I’ll grab my noise-cancelling headphones and find a 10 minute meditation to do. It really helps.
My challenge to you Why not download the free app for Headspace or Calm, and do your own seven or ten-day trial? There are 1,440 minutes available in a full day, so even allowing for sleep, dedicating just ten minutes of what remains should not be a tall order, and it could significantly change your day.

The Front Door, the External Focal Point of the Home…

ave you noticed that some houses’ simply have much more curb appeal than other properties? This is not only assessed on the grandeur or splendor of the building, more often than not on the character or style the property presents to the outside world. Attractive landscaping and planting, good fencing and gates, structural features, exterior lighting, all contribute to creating that special curb appeal. But the front door is often underrated in its importance. It is the focal point of the house, the welcoming face and entry portal into the family home. The front door suffers more wear and tear than any interior door in the house, it has to perform multiple functions; keeping out hostile weather conditions, providing security, informing location, the access for postal and delivery services, the calling system for visitors and the primary entry and exit point for our furniture and belongings. The front door can create that first good impression, with regular maintenance it can last for decades but with wear and tear it can become damaged or decayed and in need of replacing. This can provide a unique opportunity to make a personal and decorative statement. A recent research report published two years ago states that replacing a damaged front door ranks as the single most costeffective home refurbishment, returning more than 95% of the investment on selling the property. Although it can appear a simple task to maintain, refurbish or replace the front door there are many things to consider to achieve the right look. The wrong choice can easily become an expensive, ugly mistake. If you are buying a new front door there are many different options to choose from – classic, traditional, cottage or modern styles, in natural woods or upvc materials, single glazed, doubleglazed or solid. There are also fire regulations and thermal quality standards to consider. Here are a few design hints to guide you on creating that attractive curb appeal. Decoration - choose between varnishing the natural wood or painting in gloss or matt colours. The current trend seems to indicate the matt based paint in chalky earth colours are favoured over the traditional high gloss finishes in white, black or bright primary colours.

Door furniture – basically means hinges, locks & keyholes, handles, knockers or doorbells, post boxes and house numbers or names. There is a vast array of style and finishes to choose from antique brass, polished gold or chrome, brushed silver and even coloured finishes. Older doors have often been modified over time with a multitude of door furniture being added or replaced, creating a mishmash mix of finishes and styles that make the door unattractive in appearance. It makes a better impression if all the door furniture is in the same colour finish and style. Entrance Lighting – is often overlooked, it is worth considering how the front door looks at night-time, as this also adds to the properties curb appeal and adds a welcoming feel along with added security. Try to co-ordinate the style of lighting to match the overall look of the door and furniture. Thresholds – these are often ignored but it is worth consider the effect that could be achieved if the threshold was coordinated into the overall design scheme by adding tiles or painting in a complimentary or contrasting colour. Plants & Hanging Baskets – adding feature foliage to the front door can also add to the attractiveness of the entrance but such planting needs to be well kept and watered, nothing is less appealing to a property than dead or overgrown planting.

Teaching Your Dog ‘leave’
T
he leave command, also known as ‘dog zen’, is possibly the most important command of all. ‘Leave’, as distinct from ‘drop’, tells the dog to disengage from an object, another animal or a human, on cue. The importance of ‘leave’ is that it teaches the dog to control its instinctive urge to move towards things that it wants or things that it dislikes and for owners this can become a powerful and incredibly useful tool. A solid ‘leave’ should be essential puppy training, up there with an instant ‘sit’, beautiful lead manners and an impeccable recall. There are different ways to teach this command and most trainers will have a preference. However, the essential aim is to teach the dog that a tiny disengagement (averting its eyes momentarily or looking away) earns a reward. Once the dog understands this principle the owner can then begin to ask for more of the required behaviour before a reward is delivered. Here is an example of how to teach the first stage of ‘leave’. • Hold a treat on an open palm right under your dog’s muzzle, say ‘leave’ in a calm voice. As soon as he tries to take it, snap your hand shut. Aside from the snapping movement your hand must be still. • While your dog tries to make you open your hand by sniffing and pawing at it, remain silent, the dog has to figure out what gets the hand to open. • If your dog’s teeth or claws hurt, wear a glove. • Dogs will try many times before they give up trying to get your hand open. On giving up they will probably look at you as though to say “what do I do now?” This is the start you want - the dog has made a decision not to take the food. • IMMEDIATELY open your hand and repeat the command to ‘leave’. • At this point, the dog may look at you, slightly step or turn away, sit or lie down. If your dog does any of these calmly praise him and reward him with the treat, thrusting your hand to his mouth, saying ‘take it’.

• Repeat until you can open your hand and the dog makes no attempt to take the food on first presentation and ‘leave’. • Timing is CRITICAL if your dog is to understand the exercise. You need to open your hand the moment he moves away, and shut it the moment that he moves towards the food. • Once the dog is leaving on first presentation begin to vary the duration the dog leaves before rewarding. Sometimes make reward almost immediate, other times wait longer and gradually increase the maximum duration. If you do not provide this variation the ‘leave’ becomes a trick. • So long as the dog ‘leaves’, give him CALM praise- this tells him he is doing the right thing but it DOES NOT MEAN he gets the treat. Note excited praise may cause the dog to try to snatch the treat. • If the dog does not take the treat but fixates on it with his nose inches away, this does not count either, the dog must disengage. • Once you have a reliable leave on first presentation, together with varying durations, now sometimes put the food treat away and reward from the other hand. The dog now learns to accept that leaving something that he wants or that interests him and never accessing that thing is still rewarding. • Once this further variation is mastered now practise in lots of different situations and contexts. Now the dog has learned the principle of ‘leave’ the command has to be rebuilt with treats on the floor (use a hand or foot to cover the treat). You will then move to dropping food randomly. The exercise should also be rebuilt with toys, other animals and even people. All this will take time, so find a good trainer or class to help you.

The Private Made Public: Antonio de Pereda On display is Antonio de Pereda's Two Figures at a Table with Kitchen Utensils (1631-1678), on loan from Penrhyn Castle (National Trust). A contemporary of Velázquez, Pereda is one of the finest still-life painters of the Spanish Golden Age and his Kitchen Scene is filled with exquisite details, which visitors will be able to explore at close quarters. abies are born ready to play, and water is a wonderful, natural sensory play area, where your baby can learn and have fun – especially in the summer. Giving your baby water confidence is the best way you can prepare them for swimming and being safe in the water for life.
Newborns Having spent nine months suspended in fluid in the womb, babies generally love the liberating sensation of floating freely in warm water and it’s never too early to get them in a pool - as long as the water’s warm enough, above 30 degrees for a baby older than 12 weeks (or heavier than 12lbs), and above 32 degrees if they’re younger or smaller. Popping on a warming wetsuit can really help those babies who feel the cold.

SE22 Councillors with James Barber
What a Summer Keep East Dulwich Suburban Southwark Council is currently consulting on its new planning bible call the Southwark Plan https://goo.gl/tDjtQB and Local Area Plans https:// goo.gl/KxyEK5. Please take a look at these and tell me what you think. These documents includes plans to allow tower blocks to be built where developers convince the administration councillors and council officers they will fit in rather than restricted to specific areas. The council is seeking to become even more developer friendly. For East Dulwich the proposals state “Developments in East Dulwich should provide as many homes as possible”. We’ve already seen several over developments being approved by the current council administration contrary to the current suburban designation, the wishes of local residents and local councillors – 2-2A Crystal Palace Road, 201-205 Crystal Palace Road currently the latest being built as well as recently completed 97 Crystal Palace Road and 8490 Lordship Lane. The proposals would see both local builders merchants removed and put further pressure to irreversibly change East Dulwich. The existing policy is for new developments to provide 35% as Social Housing. The new plan is for 25% of homes to be at Social Rent prices, which broadly are 50% more expensive than Social Housing rents. It also introduces Intermediate homes for families with incomes up to £90,000. These changes would represent a huge give away to developers and imbed how ridiculously expensive putting a roof over your head has become. It weakens protection of keeping places like Lordship Lane as a shopping street as well as other uses. Dulwich Hamlet football ground is listed as a development site, which is hardly helpful! I’m very keen to hear what you like about the area that we need to ensure these policies help maintain?
Is Good, Good Enough? Southwark Council’s Children’s Services have just been inspected by Ofsted and overall assessed as Good. This means the service is viewed as around 36 | SE22 - August 2017 07900 227366 |
the border between the best and second best quartiles of local councils. The previous inspection also rated the council as Good. The latest report gave praise for the adoption service rating it as Outstanding. But within the latest report the rating for the Looked After Children and Leavers experiences has been downgraded from Good to Requires Improvement. But the former report gave this as Good with the Capacity for Improvement rated as Outstanding. Sadly Ofsted appear to have got that wrong with a decline in rating over the last four years. The council has a moral and statutory duty to ensure all it’s looked after children have at least a good experience. This is significant. Southwark Council looks after 510 children and 2,694 children being assessed as needing specialist children’s services help. Train Strikes Again Sadly ASLEF and Southern Trains are still in dispute. The train drivers union plans to go on strike, affecting services from East Dulwich and Peckham Rye stations, on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th of August. The train company has stated their latest offer would increase basic train driver pay from £49,000 to £60,683 per annum for a basic 35-hour week but requires agreement to operate Driver Only Operated trains. Such trains have been operating since 1982 safely and now account for around 30% of all UK trains. So it seems an odd sticking point to not accept such a large pay increase with this condition. Train fares have risen sharply over recent years. More Driver Only Operated trains are one way to restrain further train fare increases. It also makes train services more reliable needing only a driver to get going. Would you prefer to see higher train fairs to keep conductors on Southern train services and an end to all these strikes?

What am I? Employed or Self-employed?
I
n recent months the age old battle of what is the employment status of an individual has hit the headlines again. This confusion or lack thereof has been compounded with the latest addition to our language of the ‘gig economy’, whatever the gig economy is! However, its emergence has cast a looming cloud over our current and future taxation of individuals within this sector, be it permanent or transiently like its players. The battle for clarity of self-employment is set within the backdrop of two recent events played out in the economy. Firstly, the increasing battle for employment rights grow for individuals who at one time craved independence, but today behave like Oliver Twist and shout "Please, sir, I want some more." Unlike Oliver, their shout is not directly for more food but more employment rights, yet seeking the freedom of self-employment. Secondly, we saw a national newspaper and the white van brigade force our Chancellor to make the biggest U-turn in years over a budget proposal. Perhaps the lunatics have taken over the asylum! Nevertheless, there is a need to attempt to seek some clarification on this matter of self- employment. It is quite easy to state that HMRC have six badges of trade that determine self-employment. However, the practicality of life is less black or white. HMRC themselves must shoulder some of the responsibility for this problem because their registration form’s final question asks, “Will you be doing all your work for one person or firm?” Does this mean if you are working for more than one firm you are selfemployed? Well, the answer is No! Self-employment is not based upon the number of firms a taxpayer works for. Furthermore the term ‘works for’ is not the language of self-employment but employment. The position is further compounded by employers who misguidedly believe they can make an employee self-employed by getting them to sign a pseudo self-employment agreement. The status of an individual taxpayer is determined by the nature of their engagement. The two types of engagements are under a "contract of service" or a "contract for services". There may only be a subtle difference between these engagements but this makes a material difference. The engagement status is further reinforced by a series of additional

tests. However, these generic tests must be applied to each individual case and set of circumstances. It should be noted that if an individual is deemed selfemployed for one engagement it does not mean they are self-employed for all subsequent engagements. This can be seen in the case of Alex a selfemployed private tutor. Last year, Alex delivered a half day students’ revision session at her local college and she invoiced the college. In June, Alex received an offer from the college to teach a new study skills module over six weeks at the start of the academic year. The offer letter stated her income will be taxed under PAYE. This surprised Alex. However, the college’s offer letter was correct in proposing the changed employment status. Alex’s previous engagement was, a contract for her services. The new offer is for the engagement of her service, which means Alex will become an employee of the college, albeit for six weeks. Two of the six badges of trade to be considered within HMRC’s legislation include: a) the individual’s freedom to accept or turn down work if they wish and the engager is under no obligation to offer any work, or further work; and b) the individual’s authority to sub contract or use a substitute person or additional persons to carry out the task. The emergence of the gig economy and the recently published ‘The Taylor Review of Modern Working Practices’ may serve to bring order back into the employment asylum.

Jim is from Dumfries and a Queen of the South supporter, has lived in South London since 1977 and fully considers himself a Jockney! Since 2001 he has been involved in the local community as secretary at the volunteer-run, Aquarius Golf Club.
The most famous person you’ve met? One of my neighbours Robert Fyfe, who played Howard in The Last of the Summer Wine.

What brought you here?
Your favourite place to go for a drink?
How long have you lived in the area? When I graduated from Stirling University, I was offered a job with the Post Office, now BT in IT. I stayed with them for 37 years.
What has changed most during that time? The traffic, it take ages to get anywhere. In the afternoon I find it is quicker to walk to Sydenham High Street rather than drive.
What do you most value about the area? The greenery as we overlooking Wells Park.
Do you know your neighbours? Yes all of them, including their kids, dogs and cats. Though the least friendly is my own Bengal cat. We have a residents’ association, with a quarterly newsletter and we hold an annual garden party in June. It is a great opportunity to meet any new people who have moved into the avenue. 40 | SE22 - August 2017

Where’s your favourite place to walk? I will walk anywhere. I enjoy visiting country gardens, THE Lost Gardens of Heligan is my favourite but think that the formal Sexby Garden in Peckham Rye is as good as any and is free.
