Welcome to SE22

As is becoming the norm now, lots of things have changed since the July issue. I am pleased to say I have now had my hair and nails done! Gyms are reopening, more beauty treatments are allowed and you can even go for an outdoor swim! It is great to see more and more businesses reopening. Our events pages start on page 6 this month with five full pages of online and actual events you can go to. Please do check them out. Remember to our visit our website www.arounddulwich.co.uk as events are updated daily. Some things don’t change; the wonderful William Rose Butchers are celebrating 15 years this month. I remember waiting outside the shop on their first day to take pictures. David and Jan say thank you on pages 18 & 19. I know I go on about how important it is to shop local. But it has never been more important to do so, than now. Our local shopkeepers, cafes, bars , gyms and restaurants need our support. So I am pleased to see the Government are launching the Eat Out to Help Out scheme this month. I was hoping to list all participating bars, cafes and restaurants in the magazine but there are too many! A full list is available on our website. See page 23 for more details. The Dulwich Picture Gallery and Horniman Museum and Gardens have both now reopened. Find out more on pages 20, 30 & 31. The Last Word goes to Fiona Nott. You may remember she wrote a fabulous article last month, all about Aquarius Golf Club, see page 32. Until next time, take good care.

What's On - August Monday 3 – Friday 7 August: The House That Slipped

7.30pm with a LIVE socially distanced finale on the 8 August. Teatro Vivo presents an online immersive show. Directed by Mark Stevenson. When the UK went into lockdown the residents of 12 Laburnum Drive, Brockley took the government advice very seriously. One month on they opened their front door to find themselves in unfamiliar surroundings. Their little house had floated away and come to rest in the year 2070. Although the future seems to be almost Utopian, they have started to think about how they could get home. They have discovered that Zoom still works on their laptops, and by a strange setting in the latest upgrade they seem to be able to contact people from 2020. That's where you come in. For five nights only, a very limited audience will be enlisted to help them find their way back (if they want to), and maybe even to meet them in person a special socially distanced celebration. The House That Slipped is funded by Arts Council England through the Emergency fund. It’s Teatro Vivo’s response to the current situation for our industry: creating theatre that still feels connected to communities and employing arts freelancers in this time of theatre’s fight for survival. We are excited to be able to bring our signature brand of interactive immersive theatre to a digital stage – taking our audiences on a journey from the comfort of their living rooms. The show itself will take place on Zoom in the future, the present and the slip stream of time in-between. https://www.teatrovivo.co.uk/ Event/house-that-slipped.

West Norwood’s community spirit shines through on these days and we’re proud that we’re still bringing Feast to West Norwood (albeit virtually). Many of our Feast visitors are keen to understand our plans for the rest of the year now that the government has started lifting restrictions. We are as keen as everyone to get back to our usual West Norwood Feast on the high street; now more than ever our local high streets and small traders need our support. We are working closely with Lambeth and other local community groups to ensure that our future plans are appropriate, well thought out and workable. Our visitor, trader and volunteer safety is our primary concern, and until we are absolutely happy that all safely aspects are covered, we’ll continue to run our virtual Feasts. Things are moving quickly, guidance is still emerging so we’re working hard behind the scenes to plan. Stay tuned! https://westnorwoodfeast.com.

Whilst the session runs for three hours it is possible to attend one, two or three hours, as works for you. Plants Adapted To Climate Change Garden Talk with Janine Winlaw | Instagram @janinewinlaw

W

ith summers generally getting hotter, it makes sense to use plants in the garden that once established won’t need regular watering. Beth Chatto’s gravel garden and the RHS Hyde Hall’s dry garden, both in Essex, are fantastic examples of drought-tolerant planting. This kind of planting is especially useful in front gardens that get watered less, or south facing gardens. Drought-tolerant plants often originate from hot, dry environments and have adapted in different ways to cope with the conditions. They also tend to like well-drained soil, so add grit or sand to clay soils. Grey or silver-leaved plants conserve water by reflecting the sun. Stachys byzantina (Lamb’s ears) with its woolly silvery low growing leaves is a lovely example of this

(S. ‘Silver Carpet’ has smaller neater leaves than S. ‘Big Ears’). Convolvulus cneorum is a fab small evergreen sub shrub with shiny silvery leaves and masses of white flowers throughout the summer, and Ballota pseudodictamnus is a more unusual evergreen sub-shrub with rounded furry greywhite leaves. Sun-loving cistus varieties with grey green leaves and masses of short-lived flowers are also good for dry conditions. Some of my favourites include pretty pale pink C. argentus ‘Silver Pink’, C. x pulverulentus ‘Sunset’ with vibrant magenta flowers and C. x purpureus ‘Alan Fradd’ with large white flowers. Taller herbaceious perennials that cope with dry conditions include Perovskia ‘Blue Spire’ with silvery foliage and tall spires of violet blue flowers in late summer. Phlomis tuberosa ‘Amazone’ with 12 | SE22 - August 2020

SimonG_MK @Pixabay

grey-green hairy foliage and whorls of lilac flowers also copes well without much water. Sedum store water in their succulent leaves and most love hot dry conditions. Tall upright varieties are a great addition to the border with their large flat flower heads turning glorious shades of pink in late summer/autumn. Sedum ‘Autumn Bliss’ is a vigorous variety with flowers that gradually turn from pale green to deep red while S. Matrona has striking purple stems and pale pink flowers and Sedum ‘Purple Emperor’ is a dusky purple sedum with pink-red flowers. Carpet forming sedum varieties such as S. tetractinum are great for containers and also produce attractive flowers. Some plants, often those originating from dry rocky Mediterranean conditions such as lavender and rosemary have tiny aromatic leaves for reduced evaporation, and keep cool by releasing essential oils. Lavender varieties such as the popular compact L. angustifolia ‘Hidcote’ with dark purple flowers is a good drought tolerant choice. Other herbs such as thyme and rosemary also cope with dry conditions. Other means of adaptation include bearded Iris which store moisture in their rhizomes making them fairly drought tolerant once established. Make sure the rhizomes are on the soil surface in full sun. I. ‘Black Swan’ is a sumptuous dark purple variety and I. ‘Jane Phillips’ is a pretty pale blue variety. Finally plants such as Gaura lindheimeri cope with dry conditions by having long taproot. The airy spires of flowers on this perennial go on into autumn. Another example of a plant with long tap roots is Euphorbia. E. characias, which originates from the Mediterranean and once established copes well with drought.

Peaches & Brioche Recipes from Suzanne James | www.suzannejames.co.uk Ingredients (serves 4) • 2 peaches or nectarines • 4 brioche slices • 150g Mascarpone • 1 vanilla pod, seeds scraped out, pod reserved • 150g caster sugar, plus extra to taste • pinch Cinnamon • 50g Butter • 50ml double cream

Method 1) Bring a pan of water to the boil. Make a cross in the bottom of the peaches with the tip of a sharp knife, then place the peaches in the water and leave for 30 seconds. Drain, peel away the skin of the peaches and set aside. 2) Cut the fingers of brioche in half and toast them on a griddle pan until golden-brown. Remove from the heat and set to one side. 3) Mix together the mascarpone and vanilla seeds in a bowl, adding sugar, to taste. Set aside. 4) Heat a frying pan over a medium heat. Sprinkle the caster sugar over the base of the pan and allow it to melt and caramelise – do not stir the sugar, just shake the pan. Once the sugar has turned golden-brown and caramelised, carefully add the butter (the sugar may spit) and vanilla pod to the pan, stirring well. 5) Add the peaches to the pan, basting them with the caramel for a few seconds. Remove the peaches from the pan and set aside, then stir the cream into the remaining caramel in the pan. 6) To serve, place the brioche slices on a plate then top each with a peach, drizzle over the sauce and serve with a spoonful of vanilla mascarpone.

A visit to Dulwich Picture Gallery's gardens provides a great opportunity to explore art and architecture in one setting. See Peter Randall Page’s outdoor sculpture Walking the Dog (pictured in the foreground above). Carved out of granite, the design echoes the frieze on the Gallery exterior. Why not also take a moment to appreciate the intricate patterns, lines and shadows of our iconic building, designed by late-Georgian architect Sir John Soane?

Peckham Rye Fete: Cancellation The uncertainties affecting large gatherings have led us to decide, very sadly, to cancel this year’s fete, usually held on the first Saturday in September.. But it will be back in 2021 with renewed vigour and all the familiar traditional attractions: the always popular dog show, children's fancy dress competition, Punch and Judy, coconut shies and sack races, lots of stalls including the Friends-run ones selling books and plants., together with the Friends-run Pimms, wine and beer marquee and tea and cakes tent, and various other food stands.

Link Age Southwark Challenge Challenge yourself and raise funds to support the work of local charity Link Age Southwark. The Prudential Ride London is going virtual this year and is free for anyone, anywhere to take part. You can set your own personal challenge and rediscover the joy of being active in any way you choose, but on wheels – this could be on a bike, in a wheelchair or on a skateboard! The event will be held on the weekend of 15/16th August and all registered participants will be entered into a nationwide competition to win one of 25 prizes. Lockdown & Separation Pets Corner with Leonie St Clair | www.londondogstraining.co.uk

S

ince the end of lockdown we are seeing a rise in owners reporting that their pets are more clingy. For this article I will focus on dogs and separation but would ask cat and even parrot owners to be mindful that their pet may also have become used to having you around all the time and may have to be eased into coping with separation as more usual work patterns resume. For the last three months your dog has been by your side practically every minute of the day, but what is going to happen when life gets back to normal and you go back to work or even just go shopping?

Is It Separation Anxiety? • Setup a filming device using an app like Zoom, with a wide picture of where you leave your dog. • Leave the house for half an hour and watch what your dog does. If your dog soon goes to her resting area and settles and snoozes you can assume all is well. • However, if you notice subtle or more obvious signs of anxiety take action. Red flags include, pacing, barking, whining, howling, toileting, salivating, destroying things, looking generally distressed.

Changes In Behaviour • Sudden changes in behaviour can be an indication that something is awry. • First see your vet to exclude medical issues. • If your dog gets the medical all clear consider whether your pet is bored and frustrated. Lockdown has meant some dogs have not has as much mental stimulation as before. • Get some puzzle toys, teach ‘find it’, do some training and when you are out leave appropriate things to do – a cardboard box stuffed with paper and treats to rip up or hide food around the home to be searched out.

What Next? You have done all of the above but your dog gets distressed when you leave. First, do not stop being affectionate with your dog, stop talking to her, playing with her, snuggling up on the sofa or 24 | SE22 - August 2020

your bed, if this has been the norm. There is no evidence this causes separation issues. However, clingy behaviour may be a by-product of lockdown as your dog is now more used to you being around. • Start teaching your dog to be alone again in very, very tiny steps – just a few seconds at a time. • Go into another room and close the door. • Keep the absence short at first – use your camera/device to watch your dog and build up the time they are alone, slowly. • If your dog is relaxed behind a closed door inside the house then the next step is to leave the house. • Make a note of how long you were out before the dog gets slightly worried and use that as your baseline for next time. • Increase the time you are out gradually and chop and change durations – try not to increase time in a straight line. • For dogs that are relaxed for short absences when you are out, go out for half an hour and build from there. • Watch and listen to your dog. Work at their pace. Trying to force them to ‘get over it’ will likely make them worse.

Get Help If your dog is not doing well alone you need professional help. Go to www.abtcouncil.org.uk. Some behaviourists specialise in separation issues.

Cure Procrastination! A Great Technique Using Swiss Cheese! Procrastination is the habit of putting off what should be done today until tomorrow, or the next day, or week, or month... and so on. This affects us all from time to time. There are a few reasons why we procrastinate but the main one is fear: Fear of rejection, fear of change, fear of failure, and also perfectionism can cause procrastination. These are natural fears but the idea is to acknowledge them, but act in spite of them! Sometimes procrastination is the result of feeling that something is just too big and scary to even begin! The thing is that once you have begun, the task is probably a lot more enjoyable & doable than you thought. Here is a great technique that you can use to overcome procrastination & get into action!

The Swiss Cheese Method Alan Lakein, author of an amazing little book: “How to Get Control of Your Time & Your Life” advises that if a task is overwhelming you, poke holes in it like Swiss cheese. The holes represent small parts of this task that take small chunks of time. Once you have made a few holes, the overall task will seem less scary and looming. You will already be involved, gaining momentum and confidence and it will be much easier to continue. You’ll be surprised how much you can do in small chunks of time. Even if you only have a few minutes to spare in between other stuff, still attempt the Swiss cheese method. “The secret to getting ahead is getting started.” —Mark Twain

How to do the Swiss Cheese! • Identify a large or overwhelming task. • To start thinking positively and get yourself in the right frame of mind, take a few minutes 26 | SE22 - August 2020

Photo by sydney Rae on Unsplash

to close your eyes and imagine how you will feel once this task is complete. • Now brainstorm and create a list of short or instant actions to complete this task. You may need to break down larger steps into smaller chunks to come up with your list of small items. • Put these tasks in order of priority. • Start on the first one now! • As you work through your list and make more holes in the cheese, notice how much better and more confident you feel as you are now involved, and how less scary the job is now. The thought of a large or complex action is always worse than actually doing it. Once you have started and are involved, you will be surprised at how much easier the task is than you initially thought. You will power forward and find it so much simpler to complete it! Remember that the only cure to procrastination is action and if you wait until you ’feel’ like doing something you may never begin! So try the Swiss Cheese Method!

Financial Matters

With David Frederick FCCA | Marcus Bishop Associates | marcus-bishop.com

The Financial Effects Of PPE Plus SD Saturday 4th July, saw the celebratory opening of pubs, restaurants and hairdressers subject to adherence to COVID Secure guidelines. However, if we undertake some deep sea diving behind the scenes the reality is less jubilant for business owners and customers. We may have all transitioned or displayed degrees of agility to move to home working mode or whatever is the hackneyed phrase we’ve learnt in the past 14 weeks. Irrespective of terminology we have experienced some language development. How many of us used or thought about or even cared about PPE or SD (sorry! social distancing) before 23rd March 2020? Be honest! These words now occupy a place in our daily lexicon. However what do they mean? I am not about to provide an English lesson. But, to those unfamiliar or who have forgotten, I’ll remind you. PPE is ‘Personal Protective Equipment’. Similarly, social distancing which has occupied lots of air time in recent weeks, be it 1m, 2m or any combination or variation, is all about our new personal space. The reality is, that whilst we were cheering and lifting our glasses to celebrate our pubs reopening on 4th July, the combination of PPE plus SD has been impacting upon our businesses and households. Prior to the COVID pandemic PPE was not a material expense in the costs of business operation. Similarly, it was not prevalent in the minds of households and consumers. This is so clearly reflected in the words of Dr Ravi Rattan the principal of two dental practices, “pre COVID, PPE consumed some 38p in a patient’s treatment cost but post COVID it now consumes some £10 - £12 albeit much higher a few weeks ago.” The staggering impact of PPE in dental care provides a flavour of our new operating environment. A similar experience was displayed 28 | SE22 - August 2020

by a local beauty salon owner, who now levies her clients a fixed fee to cover her investment in additional PPE. Whilst PPE costs may be transferred to consumers via increased fees; the costs of social distancing are not so transferable. In reality, social distancing results in the reduction in customers that can be served. An owner of a small restaurant estimates the impact of social distancing immediately reduces their covers by some 40%-50%. The consequence of which is a reduction in sales, profitability, employment or ultimately business viability. Dr Ravi Rattan further explained, “dental practitioners are unable to levy additional fees to NHS patients due to contractual arrangements. NHS services and patients charges are set by the Government and there is no ability to vary these; and equally additional PPE costs cannot be passed to NHS patients. However fees for private patients can be varied and it is recognised that the added PPE costs are being passed to patients with a fixed fee being applied to private patients in recognition of increasing costs. Local photographer, Claire Ballard from BALLARD Photography explained, “the only part of my business that has been affected by social distancing is my new born shoots - all other areas were socially distanced to some degree before and continuing that is no problem.” Households can rest assured that not all businesses are increasing their prices due to PPE plus SD. Local plumber, Rosie Reilly, who incurred increased spending on PPE, said, “I am not passing these increased costs onto my customers.” Rosie is conscious that some of her domestic customers are already in challenging financial positions. Business owners are managing the financial effects of PPE plus SD on their customers in a variety of different methods in the quest to get the local and national economy moving again. Nevertheless, it is abundantly clear that the social benefits of PPE plus SD will leave households and business financially scarred for some time to come.

On display will be fossil skeletons as well as full-size models and animatronics that bring the Permian back to life. Tickets*: Child £5, Adult £9, Family (up to two adults and two children) £20. The Last Word – Fiona Nott The one thing you couldn’t do without? Gin and tonic!

Do you belong to any groups? I am a member of the Aquarius Golf Club and am currently the Ladies Captain. I love playing, and am keen to encourage more ladies to join the club and take the up the sport. I waited way too long to join a club and wish I had joined the Aquarius as soon as I started playing. It is the perfect environment for both beginners and improving golfers.

Where are you to be found on Saturday? On the golf course followed by a couple of drinks on the patio at the Aquarius golf club. Whether it is 9 or 18 holes, driving off towards the bar always puts a spring in my step.

The best meal you’ve ever had? Top of Grouse Mountain in Vancouver. The food was delicious and the views across Vancouver and the mountains as the sun went down was out of this world. It is the only city I would ever swop London for.

The best kept secret...

Fiona works for a weather analytics company supporting retail clients across Europe and would normally spend a couple of days a week travelling for work so is really enjoying more time at home in SE22 at the moment. She is also a keen golfer and Lady Captain at Aquarius Golf Club.

How long have you lived in the area? I rented a flat in East Dulwich when I first came to London 35 years ago for work and apart from a few years in Herne Hill and West Dulwich, have now been back in SE22 for over 20 year.

Has to be The Nunhead Gardener on Oakdale Road in Nunhead. I discovered it by accident and now it is my go-to place for plants. They pack so much into a small space and there is always a wonderful choice of both outdoor and indoor plants, plus pots and gifts. I go in for a present and come out with at least two more plants for myself! I love it.

What is your favourite shop? Dr Boo on North Cross Road. Always a treat to pop in and Kazia’s delivery service during lockdown was a real boost.

If money was no object... I would pay the running costs for St Christopher’s Hospice for the next year as they are under so much financial pressure, especially right now.

What do you most value about the area? It is such a friendly place and I love the range of independent shops, cafes and restaurants we have. Lockdown has had such a negative impact on our local traders, so I am committed to really “go local” going forward and support local shops as much as I can. 32 | SE22 - August 2020
