King’s Christmas Trees For 6 years Kings Christmas Trees has been feeding homeless people. Our weekly drop in meeting called The Feast provided 4,500 three course meals last year for rough sleepers and vulnerable individuals in South East London. t’s impossible to write about December and not mention the C-word. Now the silly season has officially arrived, I don’t seem able to stop saying it! I am casually dropping it into conversations at the school gate, on the phone to family, and in work emails. I know many people like to get a head start on their shopping, but in our house all talk of Christmas is embargoed until 1st December. Then, I go all out! I draw the line at fluorescent Santa statues, but love Christmas films, carol singing, mince pies, decorating the tree, shopping, gift wrapping, drinking fizz and dusting off the sequins for midweek nights out. Usually, this time of year is also when our diary is packed full of trips to visit family, so I try to dedicate some time in November to catching up with friends. When I first moved to the area, the only other person I knew here was my husband. So, in an effort to make new local friends, I joined the East Dulwich WI and met a group of incredible women * waves at Angela Burgess * I met one of them for lunch last month at The Lordship, which was my first visit since its big refurb. The menu features hearty homemade dishes, which are locally sourced where possible. I had the panroasted hake with crushed Jersey Royals and it was absolutely delicious. I caught up with a few others at a WI event hosted by Suzanne James at her premises on Barry Road. Sitting in Suzanne’s state-of-the-art kitchen, glass of wine in hand, Suzanne and her team showed us how to make a selection of impressive canapés for when entertaining at home. If you are looking for dinner party inspiration, I highly recommend visiting her website suzannejames.co.uk The following night another good friend, Anna, who is currently the President of the East Dulwich WI, hosted a party at The Palmerston to launch her

new business, House of Colour. Due to a diary clash with ‘the husband’ I wasn’t able to go along to support her, but Angela went and said it was a huge success. A different group of us got together with our kids to go to the Dulwich Sports Club fireworks. It was 5-deep at the bar and a nightmare to get in and out of the grounds, but the display was magnificent and made it all seem worthwhile. With December now underway, I am thankful for all the festive shopping events over the next few weeks. Saturday 5th is a popular day for Christmas fairs with the East Dulwich Christmas Cracker on Lordship Lane and Northcross Road, Fairlawn Christmas Fair, St. Christopher’s Hospice Christmas Festival, Herne Hill Christmas Fair, Sydenham Gardens Christmas Fair and the Goodrich School Winter Fair, all happening on the same day! I am also very much looking forward to the Dulwich Charity Lunch at The Palmerston in aid of Link Age Southwark, which not only raises much needed funds for charity but provides another opportunity to meet up with some of the wonderful people I mentioned above. Space Saving Solutions for Christmas Entertaining

ny host no matter her or his affection for Christmas will have to make a festive nod in the direction of a seasonal spruce up, guests expect it. The problem I find is filling your home with items that only get used once a year, plus I find the whole process of packing up Christmas rather gloomy. Regular readers of this column will know from previous years my various tricks to minimise this ordeal. For example, I have a very realistic fold up tree pre-lit tree tied with lots of contrasting spotty, striped and checked bows that just has to be pulled from its box and plumped up.

The initial time invested in this was extraordinary but it has been paying dividends ever since. Another great idea is to collect items for your tree throughout the year, these do not have to be Christmas specific for example the bird salt and pepper pots pictured here, at a post-Christmas party invite guests to choose a gift from the tree to take home with them. If a tree is too much hassle there is no better way to welcome guests than with a door wreath and if you get one from a local florist it can go into the compost, rather than the back of the loft, on Twelfth Night. Make sure you check for wires etc before composting. Similarly, fir fronds look beautiful tied on the hand rails of banisters and laid along the centre of a table. Add a splash of colour with orange pomanders, oranges studded with dried cloves, or scattered mandarins. If you have children start a Christmas tradition of making paper chains, you can buy these from A J Farmers on Lordship Lane. They may be old-fashioned 12 | SE22 - December 2015

but they have that classic ‘A Christmas Carol’ charm, the making process keeps the little ones quiet for a few hours and they go in the recycling! It is not only the decorations, the table accoutrements that take up valuable storage space too, what do you do with that Spode Christmas Tree dinner service the other 364 days of the year? Use foil A4 card as party placemats, tree ornaments with luggage tags as place card markers and our old favourite the paper chain as disposable napkin rings. Buy some artists pallets from the Art Stationers in Dulwich Village and you will have the perfect superstylish serving board for cheese and crackers that stores flat throughout the year – I slide mine in undetectably between the Christmas cookery books.

It is one of my favourite times of year, as in the brief lull between the Summer Events Season and the Christmas Party Rush I am able to grab some time in my own kitchen, doing what I enjoy most of all; getting creative with ingredients, and prepping for Christmas as much as possible…. those ‘essentials’ like satsumas in cider brandy, and Christmas Cake & Christmas Pudding of course!! Although the days are short nature is still providing us with some fantastic seasonal fruit and vegetables; sprouts, turnips, swede, cauliflower and parsnips are all in season and available alongside items from store such as potatoes, carrots, red cabbage, beetroot, apples and pears.

For a real treat this month try Wild Goose, Jerusalem Artichokes and Red Cabbage (wonderful braised and served with chestnuts) all of which will be at their best now. Serves 4 • 4 wild goose breasts • salt to taste • 1 dash dry vermouth (optional) • 1 tablespoon grated orange zest • 1 orange, juiced • 1 teaspoon lemon juice • 1 teaspoon brown sugar • 1 clove garlic, minced • 1 tablespoon soy sauce • 1/2 teaspoon dry mustard • 1/4 teaspoon caraway seeds

Method 1) Preheat oven to 350°F / 175°C. 2) Rinse the breasts in cold water, and place in baking dish. 3) Splash with vermouth, then season with salt & set aside. 4) In a medium bowl, combine orange zest, orange juice, lemon juice, brown sugar, garlic and soy sauce. Season with mustard and caraway. Pour glaze over breasts in baking dish. 6) Bake in preheated oven for 30 minutes, or until no longer pink and juices run clear. 6) Baste at least twice during baking as wild geese tend to have very little fat on them and the basting ensures they remain moist and tender. 7) Serve with oven roasted root vegetables. Keeping Pets safe at Christmas

hristmas is a period of high excitement for all the family, but it is also the time we are most likely to take our eye of the ball where pets are concerned. So often, as festive preparations take over, and you are busy overseeing children, family and an endless succession of meals, it is easy to overlook the many potential dangers Christmas poses for our furry friends. Be prepared and take a moment to read these top tips; avoid a costly visit to the emergency vet and keep your pets safe this Christmas.

Food Hazards Don’t leave food lying around, put it out of reach, or dogs and cats will certainly help themselves. Protecting a tasty morsel may trigger possessive aggression in dogs. Must have Christmas treats can be deadly to pets. Chocolate is a killer where dogs are concerned. The darker the chocolate the more toxic it is. Even a tiny amount can induce vomiting, diarrhoea, hyperactivity and changes to heart rhythm, as well as trembling, seizures and finally, coma. Cooked bones can cause a ruptured gut, choking and even broken teeth. Too much fat can cause pancreatitis. Put those mixed nuts and dried fruits well out of reach. All are highly toxic and can cause seizures, trembling or other neurological signs, like lethargy and loss of muscle control. Christmas cake and Christmas pudding are chock full of dried fruit and nuts. Gravies full of onion and garlic are toxic to dogs. Watch children and dogs. Kiddies love to share delicious treats with their four-legged chums, oblivious to the dangers.

Dangerous Plants We all know Yew is deadly, but who knew a tiny bit of lily leaf could kill your cat? Pretty poinsettias can inflame the mouth and cause severe vomiting.Pine needles are toxic. Dogs and cats enticed by dangly decorations and glittery lights, can accidently ingest bits of tree. 16 | SE22 - December 2015

Holly and Mistletoe can cause vomiting, diarrhoea, hallucinations and even death, if ingested. Few adult dogs are likely to eat something so prickly but curious pups and kittens are a different matter.

Ornaments and wrapping Cats love tinsel. It is the ultimate in desirable prey; it moves, it rustles and it glitters. Some cats try to ingest what they catch and kill, and tinsel can cause a fatal obstruction in the gut. Swinging glass ornaments are no less interesting and can cause choking and obstruction in both cats and dogs. Remember puppies are especially inclined to explore new and interesting objects with their teeth. Try to put objects like this high up the tree, out of reach. Pups and cats are excited by the rustle of wrapping paper and bits of ribbons. Again, ingestion can cause choking or impaction, twisting around the guts, requiring urgent surgery.

Christmas lights and candles Kittens and pups are always fascinated by fire and flame; they will try to play pat-a–cake with glowing candles, with obvious consequences if one is knocked over. Hot wax can badly damage little paws. Twinkly lights, especially ones that blink on and off, will attract the interest of your pet and investigations may lead to discovery of the flex. Many young animals try to chew light flex and power cords and the ensuing electric shock, when the animal chomps down, may lead to damage to mouth, tongue, and even death. The bottom line is, monitor and supervise pets throughout the holiday period. If you can’t, put them somewhere safe, away from temptations, until you can. Pasta sauces, tinned tomatoes, cereals, rice, jam and tinned fruit were among the items students donated to the foodbank. “I wanted to help because it makes me feel sad that many people don’t have what I expect to have – like a home, good food and water,” said Chahdni, Year 7. “I thought this would be a really good way to share happiness.”

Students at Harris Girls’ Academy East Dulwich collected over 1,000 items of food for the local foodbank, as well as sending 90 shoe boxes full of Christmas gifts to refugees in Eastern Europe.

Students learned that poor nutrition causes nearly half (45%) of deaths in children under five, according to the World Food Programme. That’s 3.1 million children each year, equivalent to all the students in our school x 3600.

The Twelve Frauds of Christmas

o, the title is not a mistake. The 12 days of Christmas a bedrock of the festive season has now been given a make-over. This is deeply regretful as we look forward to Christmas, the festive season and the celebration of giving. We must now be vigilant and guard against those who celebrate taking from us. This shift has arisen from the explosion in internet trading. A greater degree of vigilance needs to be executed when undertaking internet or on-line activities as they have become a mainstay of our everyday life, especially during the festive season. Cyber criminals have moved online to target internet shoppers with scams which, on the surface promise to save them time and money, but in reality only deliver festive heartache and misery. In 2014, tens of thousands of shoppers fell victim to an online fraud in the weeks leading up to Christmas and sadly, even more are at risk of suffering the same fate this year, with the threat of being left out of pocket with no presents to give to their loved ones on the big day and their computers corrupted with a computer virus. To try and safeguard online shoppers and reduce the success rate of the cyber fraudsters, the City of London Police, has launched, ‘The 12 online frauds of Christmas’ campaign. This is to reinforce and continue to raise the awareness of the major internet threats especially at this time of the year. 1) Online shopping fraud 2) Christmas e-cards 3) Auction fraud 4) Holiday fraud 5) Loan and investment fraud 6) Ticketing fraud 7) Donating to charity 8) Mobile malware/malicious apps 9) Money transfers 10) Social media scams 11) Dating/Romance frauds 12) Mobile payments An examination of the top five frauds reveals similar modus operandi by fraudsters to help internet shoppers and surfers shop more safely. Online shoppers must be aware of fraudsters creating

bogus websites to advertise counterfeit goods and services that are often poor quality/unsafe, or items that will never be delivered. Despite the popularity of the Christmas e-card, cyber-criminals have developed their own as a Trojan horse because their e-card may contain a virus (malware) that will embed itself onto your computer or electronic device. The fraudsters then use the malware to collect personal data, financial information, passwords and usernames which can then be used to commit fraud. Bargain hunting during the festive period on auction sites, such as eBay or Gumtree is a popular pastime. Thus, fraudsters use the festive period as an opportunity to advertise popular items such as smartphones and ‘designer’ clothing at low prices on these auction sites. Often these items are either counterfeit or do not even exist. The principle of caveat emptor should be exercised with greater care when purchasing from these auction sites in the search for Christmas bargains. During the cold or mild weather of the festive period searching the internet for that sunshine breaks is not uncommon. However, sun seekers should be mindful of the fraudulent advertising of fake holidays on websites or social media. Some of these fake offers include, ‘too good to miss’ package trips, bargain-booking offers for villas and ski chalets or calls and texts offering tempting lastminute deals. The festive period is characterised by an increase in online loan applications. Fraudsters seek to exploit this opportunity by intercepting applications to legitimate lenders or by creating their own bogus company websites. Borrowers may also be seduced into investing their money in an investment scheme which promises high returns and low risk. Plants that keep on giving Digitalis purpurea “Excelsior Group” - Our beloved foxgloves. They’re technically biennals but produce plenty of sideshoots and self seed generously so go on for years. Hemerocallis Daylili - Daylillies can tolerate flooding, drought and salt and are often used for erosion control on steep hillsides. A plant that is best divided every three to five years, the daylily is perfect to share with friends.

In this festive season, I thought what better gift for you amateur gardeners than a list of tried and tested, reliable plants that work hard for your money and will flower for a very long time? With the help of my friend and peer Jane Booth**, I have compiled a list of plants that keep on giving. Some of them are still in full bloom in my garden as I’m writing this article! Erigeron kanvianskanus - This small unassuming plant doesn’t ask for much and will flower for months and months even if you don’t deadhead. It brings a bit of happiness everywhere it goes. Salvia “Amistad” - Salvia is a very interesting group of plants, but this one is particularly rewarding. It’s very easy to grow and flowers for 6 months or more The books say it needs deadheading but I leave mine to get on with it and it doesn’t seem to mind. Nicotiana 'Whisper Mixed' - is a must-have tobacco plant. It looks fantastic for at least 4 months, and has great disease resistance. Thalictrum 'Elin' - The new leaves are blue-grey gorgeously flushed with purple. By May the stems have soared to a height of 2m. In June lavender buds open to creamy flowers and the stems stand all winter. Cosmo binnapitus - Though it’s an annual, it often reseeds on its own. It flowers all summer until the first frost. It’s easy to grow from seed. So for a few pennies, you’ll have a long and gorgeous show in a single season. 34 | SE22 - December 2015

Solanum jasminoides - This is a vigorous climber that you cannot kill and flowers throughout summer and autumn and it’s not unusual that I see it flowering during the winter as well. Rosa “Madge” - flowers 11 months of the year, what about that, hey?! You might have to go to Great Dixter though to purchase it as it’s not often seen in garden centres. Geranium “Rozanne” - as well as, to be fair, most cranebill Geraniums keep on flowering over a very long time. They need deadheading though. Cyclamen hederifolium - With their pretty, marbled, heart-shaped leaves and upright, fragrant pink or white flowers, these easy to grow cyclamen have a long season of interest before disappearing below ground over the summer. The flowers of this autumn-flowering cyclamen often appear well before the leaves, which form a pretty carpet after the flowers have finished. Happy in sun and shade, they are perfect to plant around the base of deciduous trees. ** I recommend her “practical gardening advice” service. East Dulwich Christmas Cracker Leaf Clearing

hope you’re around Saturday 5 December for this annual street festival. Lots and lots of different activities – my favorite will be the East Dulwich Mince Pie Bake Off. I wish I was judging that event. It starts at 11am and will be centred around North Cross Road and Lordship Lane. Please do come along.

176 Buses Residents have contacted me about how noisy the 176 buses – especially night buses – are. TfL have explained that all 176 buses will be replaced in 2017. However the bus operator Arriva has now agreed to only use it’s quietest buses in the evenings and night times going forward except in exceptional cases. If you witness a noisy 176 bus at night please note the registration number of the bus and tell me.

Elephant & Castle The weekend 4 & 5 December the new £25m road layout will be cut over. Please avoid travelling via the E&C that evening and overnight. Roads will be closed, bus services at stand still. Frankly it will be chaos. The new layout will replace the northern roundabout with a two way horse shoe. Fingers crossed TfL and Southwark traffic planners have come up with a clever scheme. To me it seems over complicated and I’ll be amazed if it works well or has dramatically fewer crashes. Hopefully I’ll be proven well and truly wrong after so much money will have been spent on making these changes. 36 | SE22 - December 2015

I’ve had lots and lots of complaints about how slippery our pavements are due to soggy leaves. I’m afraid the council no longer runs as thorough a leaf clearing service as past years. It allocates an extra 12 street cleaners, two lorries, 2 large and one mechanical brooms and one leaf vacuum to cover 650km of Southwark roads and 1,300km of pavements. Typically 1,200 tonnes of leaves are collected each year so you can imagine those 12 people have a lot to do! This year has been made worse by more rain but without enough resources to quickly collect leaves they’re left to get wet and slippery. If you think more should be done email the council at environment@southark.gov.uk and please do copy me.

London National Park City Cllr Rosie Shimell and myself have signed up our support for a great initiative. We hope you agree with us. The idea is to make London the World’s first National Park City. London has an amazing amount of open spaces, trees and wildlife areas. But we can do better preserving what we have, enhancing what we have and generally making our city and East Dulwich greener. If you agree let us know. I’ve asked Cllr Charlie Smith to also join us and give his support. Fingers crossed. With this park status London would be managed to enhance its natural beauty, wildlife and cultural heritage as well as fostering the economic and social well being of our local community. New Signings Strengthen Hamlet Squad

ulwich have continued to demonstrate their championship credentials over the last month and at the time of writing remain top of the Isthmian League. A squad that was already proving how capable it was has been even further strengthened in recent weeks thanks to the clubs 12th Man scheme. The scheme began in 2012 as a way of boosting the clubs playing budget through the generosity of supporters. Donations made by supporters have enabled the management team to sign additional players that wouldn't normally be possible. The scheme proved how essential it remains again as two key signings were secured in the space of a week. Reece Murrell-Williamson, who has stunned fans with his breath taking performances since he arrived on loan from Hayes and Yeading, has confirmed that he will remain with the club until the end of the season. The next contribution of the 12th Man scheme could prove to be just as huge, with prolific goal scorer Ryan Moss joining the club. The 28 year old striker netted 19 goals last season as Margate gained promotion from the Isthmian Premier, including the winner against Hamlet in the play-off semi finals. The season prior to that he was with Kingstonian managing an impressive haul of 25 goals. The new additions to the team have certainly provided the fans with a buzz, but the re-emergence of attacking midfielder Dean McDonald has been like a new signing in itself. His long awaited return to the first team took place at Harrow Borough

in the FA Trophy where his 23 minute cameo left the opposition defence traumatised. Nyren Clunis, on his return from injury, opened the scoring in the 11th minute after cutting in from the left wing with a low drive into the bottom corner. Harrow attempted to battle back without reward but when Sean Scannell slotted home a penalty in the 59 minute, the rest of the game was one way traffic. McDonald was at the fore of every attack, striking the cross bar and forcing a fantastic save from the opposition keeper. He finally grabbed a deserved goal after pull back from Albert Jarrett found him in the box to slam home. McDonald’s form has continued in earnest finding the net 4 times in the subsequent 3 games. What’s On - December Friday 11 December: Dulwich & District U3A The next Open meeting of Dulwich & District U3A is on Friday 11th December 2-4pm at St Barnabus Parish Hall – 23 Dulwich Village SE21 7BT. No talk this month we will have a light-hearted quiz with a Christmas tea, lots of prizes and some entertainment from the Ukulele Group.

Friday 11 December: Concert in St. John’s, East Dulwich You are invited to a concert of music and readings with the theme of Advent and Christmas running through them, in St. John’s, East Dulwich, on Friday, December 11th at 7.30 p.m. There will also be music from a young flautist and the performers will be the Elm Singers. Admission free with a retiring collection for Sydenham Garden, a mental health charity which is doing excellent work locally.

Saturday 12 December: Sing Out for Christmas The four Lewisham ‘Sing Out’ community choirs combine to present a festive concert to celebrate Christmas and fundraise for award-winning local charity Sydenham Garden. Another popular Singaround hosted by The Goose Is Out! All are welcome, whether to sing or to listen. It’s an informal and supportive atmosphere, so don’t worry if it’s your first time! Songs of any country or culture welcome. What’s On - December Sunday 13 December: Join Little Disco for a fun family Christmas disco! A festive day time disco for parents and their under 7s, at the East Dulwich Tavern, SE22. Go crazy swirling and twirling your little ones around the dance floor and show them how you get down to the latest tunes, retro disco classics and Christmas favourites that you love to dance to. The lovely DJ will get you “Rocking around the Christmas Tree”, and there will be other boredom busting activities such as snow, bubbles, games and competitions, prizes and a free disco accessory for every child. There are child friendly drinks and snacks available to buy to complete this fun packed afternoon and there is a bar for the grownups! Tuesday 22 December: Santa baby: stitch a Santa hat and make an ornament Enjoy an afternoon of crafting with The Sewcial Circle in Dulwich Park and get to grips with hand sewing at this workshop. We’ll tackle some simple embroidery stitches and create a beautiful ornament for your tree and get all festive with handmade Santa hats! We’ll use the sewing machine to make our classic red Santa hats, complete with a fluffy white pom pom and then get to grips with some hand-stitching to create a felt bauble ornament, with sequins, ribbons and trim. 2-4pm at the Francis Peek Centre, Dulwich Park. We are most fortunate to benefit from more than twenty highly professional and experienced tutors and to use the extensive facilities at Alleyn’s, including the Music School and the wonderful Michael Croft Theatre. DYO meets for five mornings (9.20am – 1.00pm) each school holiday and presents a concert on the last day. A limited number of bursaries are available – please contact Ronke, our administrator.
