December News By Sarah Pylas
O
n the first day of Christmas my true love gave to me... mince pies, Fraser firs, carol singers, naughty elves, mulled wine, secret Santa, office parties, turkey roasts, angels, red coffee cups, gingerbread houses, tinsel, mistletoe, chocolate oranges, flying reindeer, scented candles, baubles, stockings, fizz, speeches, Love Actually, nativity plays, cheese boards, family lunches, presents, gold coins and a whole lot of festive cheer. What’s not to love about December? Even the crisp cold air and dark afternoons feel romantic under sparkling Christmas lights. La Scala Coffee House was the star of the Time Out London awards last month when they took home the prize for best coffee shop in Dulwich and East Dulwich! Also in the spotlight was the Dulwich Literary Festival, who hosted events with some of the best-known names in politics, fiction, poetry and history. West Dulwich had its chance to shine at the Love West Dulwich Christmas Fair where a Santa’s grotto, arts and crafts market and live music got everyone in a very merry mood. Whether this time of year makes you feel like a big kid, or has you hiding in the kitchen glugging mulled wine until it’s all over, there is no denying that our fabulous community really does pull out all the stops to provide joyful family entertainment. There are Christmas events happening all over Dulwich this month. Dulwich Hamlet Supporters’ Trust kicks off the local festivities with its Christmas party on 1st December. All money raised on the night will be split between the Trust and Football Beyond Borders, the club’s charity partner next year. North Cross Road will host a street festival with all the trimmings when the Christmas Cracker returns on Saturday 3rd December. As well as a festive market, there will be arts and crafts, a
Christmas jumper competition judged by the East Dulwich WI, a kids disco and exclusive offers from local traders and businesses. The event will be compèred by local comedy duo, the Scummy Mummies, whose book of the same name is out early next year and is available for pre-order on Amazon now. The Dulwich Picture Gallery will light up and come to life from 6th – 18th December. You will be able to create a festive family photo at a giant magical frame in the grounds, visit the enchanted cottage where Christmas storytelling awaits and listen to roaming choirs delight your ears with seasonal songs. The Dulwich Charity Lunch is back at The Palmerston on 8th December. Once again the lunch will raise much-needed funds for local charity Link Age Southwark (formerly Dulwich Helpline & Southwark Church Care). Forest Hill will perform a live nativity on 17th. You can journey with Mary, Joseph and their donkey along Dartmouth Road to Bethlehem (Holy Trinity Church). It really is the most wonderful time of year. As always, you can find details of all local news, events and ticket information over on our website. You can also find us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter @arounddulwich.

Hectic Host
Now Here’s the Thing: Slow Coffee
I
t is a source of somewhat amusement to see Slow Coffee being introduced as a new trend, there is nothing new about steeping coffee slowly through paper filters. Although the apparatus was hard to come by, back in the day there really was no other way to make coffee. Those who wanted to avoid instant coffee would come back from day trips to France stoked up on filter papers and plastic cones. Gravitational feed was the only way every household or establishment could serve fresh coffee for years until the introduction of more immediate methods such as the cafetiere or French press in the late 1980s. Even the first domestic coffee making machines relied on this principle, filter coffee making machines, that facilitated hot water slowly dribbled through a paper cone of ground roasted beans collecting in a jug below. Pressurised coffee making machines, forcing hot water rapidly through ground coffee, were the preserve of coffee shops and cafés. Even traditional stove top percolators were seldom used in the Britain, where they were viewed largely with suspicion and again were a piece of kit one tended to bring back from holiday and never use. Gravitational methods fell out of favour when the American style hotplate was introduced, keeping coffee hot in this way kills the flavour and creates a bitter unpalatable taste. Whilst cafetieres are a very successful way of brewing coffee, the brew it creates is not without its problems. The grounds remain in the steeped liquid and more oils than are necessary can escape, again resulting in a bitter brew. The best option to create coffee in this manner is a Soft Brewing, where the ground coffee is placed in a vertical, cylindrical mesh filter within the pot which can removed one the desired brewing time has been reached thereby halting the process. Look for a Sowden coffee pot or similar. Back to Slow Coffee, the Chemex Coffee Maker, was first introduced in the 1940s – so it is far from new – and was the coffee making method
12 | SE22 - December 2016
Ian Fleming allocated to James Bond when he was establishing his fictional character, a man renowned for this fine taste, in Casino Royale. But how does Slow Coffee fit into the life of a busy Hectic Host. To my mind I would rather slowly feed hot water into the cone of my Chemex at the end of a meal that frantically fret with a complicated piece of machinery, but each to their own and at the end of the day it all a matter of taste. Whether a new thing or not Slow Coffee gets my vote. Lawrence Roullier White www.roullierwhite.com

Food & Drink with Suzanne James
Pistachio Crusted Rack of Lamb with Pancetta Ingredients (Serves 4) • 11/3 cup unsalted pistachios • 1 tablespoon chopped thyme • 1∞ teaspoons chopped rosemary • 1/3 cup Filippo Berio Extra Virgin Olive Oil • Pinch salt • Pinch freshly ground black pepper • 1∞ lb rack of lamb, frenched (8 chops) • 6 ounces thinly sliced pancetta or bacon • 6 scallions, white and tender (green part only) • 1/3 cup unsalted pistachios shelled • 1 tablespoon chopped thyme • 1∞ teaspoons chopped rosemary
Method 1) Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C) 2) In the bowl of a mini processor, finely chop the pistachios with the thyme and rosemary. Add half of the olive oil and process to a paste; season with salt and pepper. Scrape half of the pistachio paste into a small bowl and stir in the remaining olive oil. 3) Coat the lamb with half of the remaining pistachio paste. 4) Wrap the pancetta slices around the lamb, between the bones, leaving the bones exposed. Spread the remaining pistachio paste over the pancetta and set the rack in a small roasting pan. 5) Roast the rack for about 30-40 minutes, or until an instant-read thermometer inserted in the centre of the meat registers 145° for medium to well done. 6) Ensure top is crusted 7) Transfer the lamb to a cutting board and let rest for 5 minutes. Reserve the pan drippings. 8) Meanwhile, spoon 1 teaspoon of the rendered pancetta fat from the roasting pan into a medium skillet and heat until shimmering. 9) Add the scallions and cook over a high heat until softened and browned in spots, about 4 minutes. 10) Carve the lamb rack into four 2 chop servings and transfer them to plates along with the scallions. 11) Drizzle the pistachio pesto all around and serve right away. 14 | SE22 - December 2016

Fitness Tips
Five things to focus on in times of stress
W
e all have moments where it feels as though the plates we've kept spinning are starting to wobble or fall to the floor. It might be a work event, something in your personal life or an accumulation of poor sleep and bad choices, but most of us are affected by stressful times in our lives. It's how we see it coming, and then what we do when the pressure ratchets up, that matters. Here's my suggestions for five things to focus on:
Emergency Card Have a postcard or piece of paper that's your 'in case of emergency' card. Write on here the three to five things that you must keep doing, but keep them simple. It's about maintaining the basics - too much will just deter you from doing anything at all. It needs to be a handful of simple and easy to implement tips that have a big impact on your overall health. This will help you stay resilient and able to manage the situation you're facing. As soon as you feel stressed or overwhelmed, pull out the emergency card and follow the instructions!
Sleep Whatever situation you're facing, getting to bed on time and at least trying to rest is imperative. Be disciplined about leaving your smartphone away from the bed, and try and relax by doing some breathing exercises before sleeping. A sprinkle of lavender oil on the pillow can encourage restful sleep, and distracting yourself with a good fictional novel is a great way of switching off. It's important to quieten the mind and allow the body to repair itself overnight, and even if you're not sleeping well, going to bed early and just lying still can help.
under the cosh or very stressed. Remember to keep them simple; that way it's easier to stay compliant. This could also include alcohol consumption, or limiting other negative habits such as smoking, eating sugar or avoiding food altogether.
News Ban I'm always surprised at how many people have news alerts set up on their smartphones, even during frenetic and busy times. The alerts come in at any time in the day, interrupting whatever it is that we're doing. We probably wouldn't tolerate someone knocking on the door or calling us whenever they wanted to, so why do we allow it from our phones? Who's in charge here? Personally, I don't follow the news at all. I find it's mainly based on fear, shame and drama. If there's a major event going on, someone will tell me. Turn off your alerts, and don't follow the news whilst you're under pressure. It is unlikely to help you.
Connect With Others In a recent study, Michael J. Poulin of the University of Buffalo and his team interviewed almost 850 people, ages 34-93, living in Detroit, Michigan. Participants were asked to report stressful events they had encountered in the past year and how much, in the same time period, that they had assisted others. The study found that every major stress event increased an individual’s risk of death by 30%, but, overall, this increase was erased for those who reported high rates of helping others, even if they additionally dealt with a lot of stress.
Nutrition Set yourself some basic ground rules around eating. That might be as simple as one home-cooked meal a day or eating three meals a day, or just making a commitment to yourself to avoid sugar for example. But set some rules, write them down on the emergency card and follow them when you feel 16 | SE22 - December 2016

Pets Corner
Christmas Games For Busy Dogs
C
hristmas can be a frantic, fractious time. With all those meals to cook, guests to entertain and children to placate, the family dog may get less attention than usual. Bored dogs are a Christmas disaster and find their own entertainment in the places and ways we least want. Research suggests that veterinary emergency admissions are 20% higher on Christmas Eve. To ensure you don’t become one of that number do a quick mental survey of the home and note potential Christmas hazards (see Keeping Pets Safe at Christmas, 2015). Next, have a look at this quickie list of fun, indoor games for your dog. Children will love to join in too. Remember brain work is more tiring than pure physical exercise.
1) Work That Nose • Dogs ‘see’ the world through their noses so give them problem solving games that use their great sense of smell and work those doggy brains. • Get some opaque containers, plastic flower pots are good- around 4 or five is ideal. • Without your dog seeing, hide a really smelly food treat inside one of the pots. • Now let your dog go over and sniff it out. If he locates the right pot, touching it with his nose or paw or just staring, lift the pot and let him get the treat. • With practice your dog will locate the treat more quickly. Next start spacing the pots further apart. • Eventually you can add more pots and even start hiding them in different rooms around the house.
2) Hide And Seek • Teach your dog to ‘find’ or ‘search’ on command. • Tether the dog or get another family member to hold him while the other lets him sniff a toy or treat. • Next hide the object somewhere close, go back to the dog and let him sniff your hand saying ‘find, gesturing towards the hidden object. • Say ‘yeeeees’ as he gets closer or ‘duuuh’ as he gets further away. • If he finds it hard at first, help by pointing or walking up to the object. • When he finds it praise enthusiatically. Let him know how clever he is. 20 | SE22 - December 2016
• He’ll soon get the hang of it and you won’t need to help. • If and when he sticks his nose to the ground or sniffs the air repeatedly don’t say a word, he is in deep concentration and search mode. • Eventually shut him in one room while you hide the object in increasingly difficult locations around the home.
3) Wild And Freeze • Teach your dog to ‘rev up’ in short bursts and then calm down with an instant sit. • Dance around on the spot, flinging your arms and legs around and at the same time repeat to your pup in a silly, squeaky voice ‘go wild’ – encourage your dog to leap around with you. • Do this for 5 seconds. • Now stop dead and fold your arms to your chest saying ‘freeze’. Your dog should also stop. Say ‘sit’. Hold for five seconds then ‘go wild’ again. • You can slightly vary the duration of each freeze session, keeping the dog guessing when he can move again.
4) Staircase Fetch (Not for dogs under 1 year, dogs with developing joints or with joint issues)
• It is never a good idea to let your dog hurtle down stairs but if you have a staircase you can get them to fetch a toy you have thrown up the stairs. • First hold your dog or put him in a ‘sit-wait’ at the bottom of the stairs. • Throw a toy up to the top of the stairs, ensuring your dog does not go after it. • Build the anticipation by saying “ready, steady”. Then let him go, saying ‘go’. • Chances are your dog will run up the stairs as fast as he can to get the toy but do let him come down again at a slow pace. • Some dogs may enjoy a short game of tuggy at the bottom of the stairs before another round of staircase-fetch. Ten rounds should leave most dogs ready for a long nap! Leonie St Clair - www.londondogstraining

The way GCSE performance is measured has changed. The proportion of students achieving five good GCSEs has been replaced by Progress 8, which measures the progress made by students across eight key subjects between joining a school in Year 7 and when they sit their GCSEs.
Harris Girls’ Academy East Dulwich has been named the top school in Southwark for the progress made by students, and eighth in the whole of England and Wales.

“Whatever their starting point when they join us, our students know that they will succeed if they make the most of what we offer,” said Carrie Senior, Principal.
Our Progress 8 score was 0.95, which means our students achieve, on average, almost a full grade higher per subject than pupils of similar ability at other schools.
Each student’s progress is compared to that of students of similar ability across the country.
Last year, 80% of students gained five or more GCSEs at grades A*-C, including English and Maths.

Dulwich Hamlet FC - News
Dulwich Hamlet continues to thrives
T
his year saw Dulwich Hamlet thrive both on and off the pitch. Attendances at Champion Hill continued to grow and with the team just losing out on promotion with the league playoff final defeat at East Thurrock, hopes are high that 2016/17 could be the season we achieve promotion to the National South. Going into the final month of the year Dulwich Hamlet have not only maintained their position just outside of the play-off places, but 4 – 0 home win against Southern League Premier Division side Chesham United saw the team secured a place in the 3rd qualifying round of the FA Trophy. With the final at Wembley Stadium, do we dare to dream? It’s now been 12 months since the arrival of the arrival of the ‘mega-container’ to Champion Hill. The ‘mega-container’ is the pink and blue painted shop that is run by the Supporters Trust on behalf of the club. After many months of hard work the ribbon was finally cut and the shop was officially opened for business at the beginning of April. Since then it has given us the opportunity to expand our range and offer fans different items which have been requested previously alongside new lines of t-shirts and scarves. In the run up to Christmas there will be an opportunity for fans to purchase a wide range of Dulwich Hamlet merchandise for friends and family which includes our popular wall calendar, with 17 December (last home fixture before Christmas) being the last opportunity to buy in person from the shop before the holidays.
Supporters’ Trust Christmas Party The Trust will be hosting its annual Christmas party, in the club bar, on the 1st December. We will be putting on a raffle, auction and a buffet alongside a DJ set and live music. All money raised on the night will be split between the Trust and Football Beyond Borders (the club’s charity partner for 2016/17). You can pay on the night (Adults £2 members / £5 non-members), but to help us get an idea of numbers, we would be grateful if you could let us know if you are attending via our Facebook event page or by Tweeting (@dhstorg) us. 36 | SE22 - December 2016
Quiz Night at Champion Hill Dulwich Hamlet Football Club, the Trust and Football Beyond Borders will be putting on a quiz night in the club bar on Thursday 7th December 2016. The maximum amount of participants for each team is five and the entry fee is £3 per player. Further information can be found at http://dhst.org.uk/ or http://footballbeyondborders.org/
Forthcoming Fixtures at Champion Hill • Tuesday 6 December – Staines Town 19:45 • Tuesday 13 December – Faversham Town 19:45 • Saturday 17 December – Tonbridge Angels 15:00 Dulwich Hamlet Football Club are more than happy to issue complimentary tickets at a future league home match, which can be used by adults or children. If you would like some for your school, community group or workplace then just email the Community Liaison committee member, Mishi Morath, at therabblers@yahoo.co.uk and he will get back to you. “I have been advertising in SE22 and SE23 magazines for over 10 years and find it not only a great read, but also a really useful tool for local marketing and a proven way of attracting local business. I can highly recommend Angela and SE magazines and I remain a loyal client!” Peter Bennison, P. M Bennison Heating Ltd ‘’As a relatively new business set-up, I have advertised in two editions of SE22; and as a result have received five new clients (four direct, and one referral). I’m very happy with this response, and Angela provides an excellent, efficient service, and couldnyt be more helpful! Many thanks.’’ Lynne Walsh, Flourish Gardening “I recently had double glazed windows fitted in my bedroom, a job very well done in every way by Bespoke Windows. They look pleasing and work very well. I found this company in SE22 Magazine, a useful and informative local monthly publication.” Dotty Todd “SE21 and SE22 magazines have been great for us in connecting with the local community and attracting people to our events. More importantly our ads have brought forward volunteers who are interested in becoming befriender, group helper or driver – roles we need to fill more and more to help alleviate isolation and loneliness in older people of Southwark. Thank you SEMags for all your support – keep up the good work!” Jennie Linnett, Dulwich Helpline & Southwark Churches Care.

Financial Matters
Christmas need not be expensive
W
e are approaching the final furlong towards Christmas Day and the mood in the shops is quite astonishing. I can still walk around my supermarket on Saturday and Sunday without being overrun by shoppers with double trolleys overflowing with foodstuff that cannot be eaten in a lifetime let alone on Christmas Day. What is going on? I won’t try and explain or blame global warming or other global events of 2016. Shh! However, for many households this time of the year is often when anxieties and stress levels, hit their peak. As the marketing campaigns gather momentum to convince children and some parents that their life is incomplete without the latest fad being promoted. However, I want to share a great way to avoid the anxiety and stress over the festive season. Louisa, who is the engine of most creative and off the wall ideas, shared with me a Christmas winner just the other day. Her solution to cut the cost and burden of Christmas giving went as follows: Rather than give expensive or inexpensive presents, which are often abandoned by 3:30pm on Christmas Day, if not sooner, target the Christmas giving. Households or families can agree that they will individually or collectively make a donation to charity of their choice, for the benefit of children or another deserving cause or party. After all, who needs that 100th cardigan or another toy with numerous tiny and odd shaped bits to trip over in the house to cause a major neck breaking accident, or have to find more storage space? Louisa’s concept is based upon obtaining group agreement that this year will be a gifts free Christmas within the group. However, the group will make a collective donation to a charity of their choice. This will help provide a smile to those with a greater need. It is most likely that the benefit of the charitable donation will have a greater impact than your internal giving and unwrapping. Such benevolence did resonate with me because this
40 | SE22 - December 2016
experience is often experienced from working with the homeless at Crisis at Christmas or the residents at St Christopher’s Hospice. Louisa advised, that children aged seven years old and above could buy into the concept, although younger children may be given a little toy or trinket as a replacement to cushion the jolt to their system. The benefits of the abandonment of giving internally to those who really do not have any actual need are: 1) Those more deserving get a greater share of the cake 2) Homes can remain less cluttered from unwanted or unused gifts 3) Self-education about the concept of giving to others less fortunate 4. Greater community benefits In addition to the identified benefits from Louisa, I have found two more: 5) Time is saved not wandering around for hours trying to find a gift which will be abandoned much faster than the time spent seeking it out; and 6) The pooled funds affords the charity a financial benefit over and above the nominal contribution. The charity will be able to enjoy grossed up tax relief at the highest tax rate providing the money is given to it via gift aid in the name of the individual with the highest tax rate. Despite the ongoing debate about the cost of Christmas, it is possible to re-introduce into the minds of us all the meaning of Christmas. Moreover, Christmas needs not be stressful but tax advantageous to us all. When givers gain even HMRC gives, therefore income tax can bring joy for us at Christmas.

S
aturday 3 December 11am-5pm is our Christmas Cracker event focused on Lordship Lane and North Cross Road when the streets of East Dulwich will be filled with fun for a day of festive performances bringing the Christmas spirit for a fifth year. Alongside the usual North Cross Road market, arts and crafts and offers from local businesses, fun competitions – Christmas Wreath, Jumper and Treasure Hunt, roving performers and the live music on a stage. They’ll also be a children’s disco. Local schools also have Christmas events: • Goodrich School Friends Saturday 3 December 2-5pm • Goose Green School Friends Christmas Fair & Carols Friday 16 December 2-4pm
Shop Local One of things that help makes East Dulwich so special is the high proportion of independent shops we have. We’ve been tracking this for a number of years and have just completed our latest audit around what each shop unit is being used for. The measure of this we’ve used is how much of a Clone Town our area is by the ratio of independent shops and restaurants versus chain outlets and how varied the uses are. In 2013 the main Lordship Lane was rated as a 73 or Home Town. We’ve just completed our latest review (see picture of helper Michael Green) suggests this has improved slightly to a 77 where we have 111 independently owned shops, cafes, restaurants, etc. versus a total of 143 with 18 different main types of uses. The increase is largely caused by the slightly wider variety of uses with the East Dulwich Picturehouse being added to the mix. Any score under 50 would class the area as a Clone Town and a score between 50 and 70 as a Border Town. So remaining about 70 is great but how do we attract an even greater variety of shops, etc. and a higher proportion being owned by independent business people? The southern Lordship Lane area scored 76 and the Grove Vale area 80, which also make them Home Towns. So we’re collectively doing a good job protecting our shopping streets. But separately business owners are saying they’re under increasing 44 | SE22 - December 2016
strain. So I implore us all to maximise how much shopping you do locally. Every pound you spend locally maximizes local employment and keeping East Dulwich special. So please do come out on 3 December to get your Christmas present shopping.
Power, Gas or Water Cuts With winter here it can help to prepare for any service interruptions – it is incredible how sensitive our lifestyles are to the loss or power gas or water services. UK Power Networks who run the local electricity grid and distribution network offer a service for people who might need extra support during a power cut called ‘Priority Services Register’. If you think during a power cut you’d need extra help or know someone who would then please register for this via www.ukpowernetworks.co.uk/ prioritysupport or call 0800 169 9970. Well worth having this in place. Thames Water offers extra services www.thameswater.co.uk/extracare for specific even more vulnerable customers but no one telephone number. Each gas supplier also offers Priority Service Register membership for older or disabled customer – you’ll need to check with your specific gas supplier – during any interruption of service you’ll get support. Garden Talk
Winter’s Star Performers Whether it’s attractive bark, shiny berries or a splash of colour, there are lots of plants to add winter interest to your garden….
Beautiful Bark Betula utilis var. jacquemontii ‘Grayswood Ghost’ has brilliant white bark, which glows out in soft wintery light. It’s lovely as a multi-stem and fab underplanted with evergreen ferns, snowdrops and crocuses. Prunus serrula is another winter showstopper with shiny mahogany bark striped with lenticels. Parrotia persica is actually a shrub but can be grown as a wonderfully sculptural multi-stemmed tree. On mature trees, the steely grey bark flakes off in patches giving interest and texture in winter. Acer griseum (Paperbark Maple) is a small tree with chestnut bark that peels of to reveal cinnamon coloured wood beneath. Or for a brighter, redder bark, try Acer palmatum ‘Sango-kaku.’
Fabulous Flowers Heleborus niger is a pretty white hellebore that flowers from December to March. A must for winter gardens , there are many varieties of hellebores in pretty colours from pale pink to reddy purple such as ‘Helleborus x hybridus Havington red. Buy them in bloom to make sure you’ve picked a flower you love. Clematis cirrhosa ‘Jingle Bells’ has creamy bell-like flowers and evergreen foliage from December. Or for a splash of pinky brown look out for Clematis cirrhosa var. purpurascens ‘Freckles’. Both ideally need a sheltered south-facing wall. Cyclamen coum are delicate hardy cyclamen with tiny pink flowers and silvery leaves (December to March) that make a gorgeous carpet under deciduous shrubs and trees with ferns and snowdrops. Narcissus ‘Rijnveld’s Early Sensation’ flowers as early as December – perfect for those too impatient to wait until spring for their daffs. Hamamelis x intermedia ‘Jelena’ is a shrub that makes a winter focal point with its delicate golden orange beautifully scented thread-like petals on bare stems from Dec and March. Great for bringing into the house for a scented flower display.
Stunning Stems If you have a large garden, Cornus alba ‘Sibirica’ (Dogwood), with its brilliant coral stems in winter makes a wonderful display planted in a group. I also like Cornus alba ‘Elegantissima’ which has pretty variegated leaves in summer. Intersperse with gleaming olive stemmed Cornus sericea ‘Flaviramea’ for more impact or underplant with crocus or bright evergreen grasses such as Carex ‘Evergold’. Prune at least some of the stems hard back each year as young stems produce the colour. Corylus avellana ‘Contorta’ (contorted hazel) has curling stems and catkins that make a lovely focal point in a winter garden.
Beguiling Berries Callicarpa bodinieri var. giraldii ‘Profusion’ has clusters of amazing purple/pink berries, which cling to bare branches - bringing a serious wow factor to the garden in winter. Nandina domestica is a pretty upright airy shrub with spectacular clusters of bright red berries in the winter against purplish leaves. Skimmia japonica ‘Nymans’ is a striking shrub with larger red berries - as long as a male variety is planted close by. Ilex aquifolium ‘J.C.van Tol’ is an almost spineless self-fertile holly so has guaranteed bright red berries on dark into winter - or until the birds get at them! Rosa rugosa roses such as Roseraie de l’Hay are tough useful roses with big red hips into winter. Alternatively R. moyesiii has long orange hips and Rosa glauca is striking with purple grey foliage and red hips – all bringing jolly cheer in the gloomy winter months.

The Last Word – Sarah-Jane Mundow 4) Where are you likely to be found on a Saturday The majority of my life outside of home and work is spent in Peckham Rye Park with Arthur, my 3-year old son. Closely followed by Just Williams and Odonno’s!
5) The best meal I’ve ever had… My husband’s Steak & Guinness pie is pretty infamous in our house.
6) Where is your favourite place to eat? A tough call between the Peckham Refreshment Rooms and Artusi. I’m afraid SE15 pips SE22 on the restaurant front just now. That said, Franklin’s and The Palmerston are also great… and The Thai Corner café… I guess SE22 holds its own!
7) What’s your favourite place to go for a drink? Sarah-Jane Mundow grew up in Ireland and is a partner at William Bailey Solicitors, a small, local private client practice specialising in Wills, Probate and Conveyancing. Having been established on Lordship Lane for more than 25 years, William Bailey Solicitors have recently moved to new premises by Goose Green on East Dulwich Road.
1) How long have you lived in the area? My dad’s work first brought us to Barry Road in 1994, but I moved here permanently in 2004 to study at the College of Law. I have moved a couple of times since then, but never left SE22. My husband used to float the idea that we could live in other parts of London, but fortunately it never came to that - I love it here!
2) What do you most value about the area? Having grown up in a small Irish town, the friendly faces and community atmosphere around East Dulwich are fantastic and a far cry from how many people assume London would be. The great range of green spaces, shops, bars and restaurants obviously helps too.
3) Do you belong to any groups? I’ve been going to Cooking with Scissors for a few years now. It is a fantastic support network of small local businesses from totally disparate professions. Outside of work, I still like to twinkle my toes at my Ladies’ Ballet class run by Fiona Forester for a bit of escapism (whilst dreaming of a starring role at the Coliseum). 48 | SE22 - December 2016
For a date night / drinks with friends, probably The Nines – their cocktails are fantastic (if a little dangerous for a school night!). For a cosy and relaxed glass of red with the family, I do love Watsons General Telegraph. Especially in the winter months.
8) What is your favourite shop? Rye Books. I could spend hours in there and they run some great events for little ones and grown-ups alike.
9) Coffee or Tea? Where? I have only started to drink coffee in the last year but I can’t seem to pass Jade without stopping in there now.
10) If money was no object? I love my home, but I would love to live in one of those gorgeous old townhouses overlooking Peckham Rye Park – that view and all that space, and a huge garden to boot?! And if money is really no object, I’ll take the same again each side – one for my best pal and the other for my mum and dad!
11) Perfect holiday Sunshine and luxury. Between running a business and raising a 3-yr old it’s pretty much all I dream about at the moment!
