I am well and truly feeling the Christmas spirit putting together this issue. I have drawn the line on listening to Christmas tunes just yet! I am really excited about the launch of The East Dulwich Connection. It is a fantastic book published by local photographers Anna & Alice and features many local business men and women; including me! MEMORIAL TREE TO HELP REMEMBER LOVED ONES

A memorial Christmas tree is to take centre stage at East Dulwich funeral home.
Mondays 10am – 11:20am (term time only) at Dulwich Library, SE22 8NB.
Coop Funeralcare at 111-115 Lordship Lane is providing the tree to help local people remember their loved ones during the festive season, which can often be an extremely painful time for the bereaved.
Variety of toys for free play, baby corner, craft, children’s bible story and song time, plus a cuppa for parents. Admission £2.
Families and friends are being invited to visit the funeral home and decorate the tree with cards in memory of those close to them who have died. This is for anyone who has suffered a loss not just our previous customers.

And so to bed....
I
t’s chilly out there, the lawn’s looking muddy and the borders tatty, but a bit of tidying now will make the garden look neat over the Christmas period and get you one step ahead for spring…
Cut Back… …but don’t be too tidy. Some perennials such as sedum have attractive seed heads that look great covered in frost or dew. Ornamental grasses also add winter structure as do dried out hydrangea heads – both can be pruned in spring. Cut back perennials that are looking tatty and brown such as peonies and Verbena bonariensis to around to 5cm from ground level. (Leave more tender plants such as penstemon until April or May after the frosts.) Wisteria can be pruned now and give roses a light trim, removing long or damaged shoots. Now they’re dormant, apples, pears, currants and autumn fruiting raspberries can also be pruned from now on. Likewise, trim off any dead, diseased or rubbing branches from shrubs and trees. Acers and birch are particularly suited to pruning now, before the sap starts to flow. But there’s no need to go overboard as many plants such as buddleja and late flowering clematis can wait until early February.
Reorganise & Plant… This is a good time to move plants that are in the wrong place – too big, not thriving or overcrowded, adding organic matter as you go. Since they’re dormant, as long as the ground’s not frozen, they will adjust to being moved or divided. Try to work on boards, so as not to compact the soil. You can also plant trees, shrubs and bare root fruit trees, soft fruit bushes and roses now.
Clear Up Throw away any annuals such as sweet peas and cosmos. You can always replace with cyclamen or viola for winter colour Keep raking leaves from the lawn and remove them from borders – especially rose leaves with black spot (burn or destroy anything 12 | SE22 - December 2017

diseased rather than composting it). If you have masses of leaves, bag them up – making a few holes in the bag - and leave them at the end of the garden for fantastic leaf mould. Keep on top of weeds and clear up messy areas with piles of pots or clutter that create a winter home for snails and slugs. Clean and store stakes and garden furniture.
Mulch Finish off the borders with a mulch of bulky organic matter or bark, especially around anything recently pruned, newly planted or tender such as Verbena bonariensis or penstemon. This will improve soil texture, suppress weeds and add a bit of frost protection. (Ideally this is done before the soil gets too cold.)
Lawn Care If the weather’s mild you may still need to cut the grass in dry weather – on a high setting. But keep off the lawn if it’s wet or frosty.

Turkey & Stilton Burgers with Mushroom Sauce You can never go wrong with a turkey recipe in December! Here is a great way to use up your Christmas leftovers. Makes 3 Burgers.
Ingredients For the Burgers
• 100g Blue Cheese • 35ml Chopped Flat-Leaf Parsley • 10 ml Fresh Thyme • 100g Fresh Breadcrumbs • 500g Cooked Turkey Meat (leftovers) • 3 Eggs • 8ml English Mustard • 1 Garlic Clove • Salt & Ground Black Pepper • Flour for dusting • 1 egg • Breadcrumbs
For the Sauce • 300g Button Mushrooms • 25g Butter • 200ml Vermouth • 400ml Crème Fraiche • Vegetable Oil for Frying
Method 1) Cut the Blue Stilton Cheese into small cubes and mix the chopped herbs and the breadcrumbs. 2) Cut the leftover turkey into pieces and place in a food processor. Add the eggs, mustard and garlic and process until the mixture looks like a fine paste. Season as desired. 3) Divide the turkey mixture into 3 parts and pat each round into a flat circle. Put a cube of cheese in the centre and gently bring the turkey mixture around to cover completely. 4) Cover the patty in flour, eggs and breadcrumbs. 5) Make the sauce, slice the mushrooms and cook with butter for 5 minutes. Add the vermouth, and cook on a slow heat until it has reduced by half. Finally, add crème fraiche and continue to simmer gently for a further 10 minutes. Season to taste. 14 | SE22 - December 2017
6) To cook the patties, shallow-fry in vegetable oil on both sides, drain well on absorbent kitchen paper. Serve the patties with the mushroom sauce. Enjoy! Five Top Tips For The Perfect Fragranced Door Or Table Wreath
Before getting started, take a few moments to think about your scheme. Decide on your foliage, decorations and ribbon. I have used scented pinecone to add fragrance. You will need: • A wreath base, available from florists and craft shops • A spool of wire, and stick wire, as above • A pair of secateurs or sharp scissors • Moss • Evergreen foliage – a selection. Available from florists, but also look around your garden. • Fir cones – mine have been scented, with cinnamon, orange, cedar and myrrh to add a unique touch. and are available from Two cones, at Scotch Meats West Dulwich. • Ribbon and Pillar candles - both optional
Step 1 Your masterpiece, like all formidable constructions will need to be structurally sound. Do not rush this stage. Arrange your moss around your wreath base. Then take the spool of wire and attach the end to the base. Wind the wire around the moss firmly to secure it to the base. Work around for a nice even circle. 16 | SE22 - December 2017
Step 2 Cut your evergreen foliage into even sprigs. (Workable pieces) and use the wire spool to attach these to the moss base.
Step 3 To give your wreath depth of colour and texture be sure to layer it with different shades of evergreen, berries, holly or even flowers and herbs.
Step 4 Finally, add your scented pinecones by using the stick wire to attach.
Step 5 You have now successfully made your own festive wreath! Use a ribbon to secure it to a door, mirror fireplace or add the pillar candles for a sensational centrepiece for your table. With the scent from the pinecones you can truly embrace the festive sights, smells and cheer of Christmas. The East Dulwich Connection A photobook that uncovers the stories behind an area of south-east London where local businesses have forged a defiantly independent and individualistic environment.
F
ollowing on from the success of the Peckham Connection, over 2017, local author-photographers Anna Green and Alice Malik have been taking photographs and listening to the stories of 51 enterprising and independent East Dulwich businesses. In a chain linked together by the traders themselves, they were referred from one business to another. The rule was, they only went where they were sent. The result is a beautiful photo-book illustrating a fascinating series of vignettes that provides insights into the areaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s recent evolution and what is yet to come. rap up warm, December is here! The skies of SE22 are already sparkling with Christmas spirit and our high street is buzzing with winter menus, warm wine, and festive windows. There is plenty to make you feel merry and bright around Dulwich this month. The opening of Terroirs Bistro (formerly Toasted) on Lordship Lane proved popular with regulars and with weekly wine tastings, meet the winemaker events and guest chef pop-ups, this could be a great place to get your first sprinkling of Christmas cheer! Local resident, Chloe Gounder-Forbes, invited Angela and me to her permanent popup restaurant, Platform 1, to sample the tasting menu from guest chefs-in-residence, Fodder. We enjoyed 6-courses of wild seasonal cooking and not one of them disappointed. Chloe’s wine list features rare and indigenous grape varieties and we opted for the wine flight, which carefully matches each dish with a wine. The sparkling Pinot Grigio rosé from Romania was sooooooo good that we will both be ordering a case to see us through the party season! Sadly, Fodder’s residency at Platform 1 has now come to an end, but we can’t wait to find out who the next chef in residence will be! Suzanne James’ annual East Dulwich Supper Club fundraiser for Link Age Southwark was held at Suzanne’s new premises, fifty seven, on North Cross Road. This hugely popular event included cocktails, canapés and an incredible three-course meal of seasonal food beautifully prepared by Suzanne and accompanied by specially selected wines. There is much to look forward to this month too. The East Dulwich Christmas Cracker returns on Saturday 2nd December and is supported by Southwark Council and presented by the Dulwich Festival. This year’s street festival programme will include an exciting array of entertainment from local bands, choirs and performance groups, exclusive offers from the fantastic local traders, a wonderfully seasonal North Cross Road market with tempting gifts and delicious festival food and the return of the delightful Children’s Christmas Treasure Hunt. This year will also see the advent of an art trail with local artists

exhibiting throughout spaces in Lordship Lane and beyond. Meanwhile, just up the hill, Fairlawn Primary School will be hosting their Winter Fair with fun for all the family including mulled wine, a Santa’s Grotto, homemade gifts and food, refreshments, games, and stalls. The Dulwich Charity Lunch – also raising money for Link Age Southwark – will be held on Thursday 7th December at The Palmerston again. The Christmas Herne Hill Free Film Festival runs from 7-20 December and is celebrating with 9 free screenings across a range of venues in SE24. I’ll certainly be getting my silver stripe covered to see me through the festivities. The Little Clipper on North Cross Road has a fantastic offer for this month. Longevity & Funding Long Term Care We are all aware of the continuing increase in life expectancy, but whilst the potential for living longer may be a blessing it can also become a challenge.
P
ension reforms have given people more choice with what they can do with their pension funds. This doesn’t make it easier, however, to judge what funds are needed to ensure both a comfortable life and that the money doesn’t run out. Indeed, choices not available to people before, such as accessing funds earlier or investing instead of taking a secure income, could increase the chances of running out of money in retirement.
Estimating Future Spending According to the Office for National Statistics, spending patterns change as we go through retirement and into later life. For those aged 50 to 64, we average £29,744 per annum; between ages 65 and 74, the average falls to £23,816; and it drops to £15,496 at age 75 and over (source: ons.gov.uk, Dec 2015) But what if residential care is required at age 85? It is impossible to judge what this will cost. If an individual is receiving high quality care, with nutritious food and plenty of cognitive activity, they could live many years.
Getting It Wrong When funding significant care costs, if life expectancy assumptions by the individual in care, their families or their advisers are underestimated, it can be disastrous. They will not be able to leave the legacy they wanted to. But also care homes are under huge financial pressure and many cannot sustain residents at local authority rates; so it could mean being moved out of the home – potentially a very unpleasant situation for all concerned. 30 | SE22 - December 2017
The Six Ways Of Paying For Care For most people, paying for care requires creating income from their capital and assets. In general, there are six ways of achieving this. It is important to assess how each fits your own circumstances. It is likely that the best solution will be a combination of these options:
1) Deferred Payment Agreement If you own your own property, and it is not disregarded*, your local authority may meet the cost of your care; however, you will have to repay this ‘loan’ at some point. A deferred payment agreement is available to all individuals who cannot afford to pay their care fees without selling their property. The local authority will be allowed to charge nominal interest. When the property is sold, either on death or before, the local authority will recoup its money. *Your main residence is disregarded in certain circumstances.
2) Rent The Property Out Another option to consider if you have a property is to rent it out. The rental income could be used towards the cost of care.
3) Equity Release If you are receiving care at home, it may be possible to release capital or income by using the value of your property. You will, however, have to pay interest on any capital/income that you release, and if you need to move into a care home permanently, the loan will have to be repaid. You must ask for a personalised illustration to understand the features and risks of this course of action.

6) Buy An Income With A Care Plan You could use some of your capital to buy yourself a guaranteed level of income payable monthly and guaranteed for life. The amount of capital needed varies according to the age and health of the individual.

Uncertain Times
W
ith the team sitting comfortably at the top of the league, Dulwich Hamlet has entered a period of uncertainty. For those who are not aware, the operators of the Football Club and owners of Champion Hill (Meadow Residential) announced the withdrawal of all financial assistance to the football club. They have handed back responsibility and payment of the players and staff to the Club’s owner, Nick McCormack. This action potentially threatens the Club’s ability to compete at a level which matches the ambition and the Trust Board has been working hard, alongside the Football Committee, to find a solution. However, this has been made harder by the fact that key information, and clarity on the situation, has not been forthcoming (at the time of writing). We will continue to work hard and try our best to reach a positive outcome for club, its’ supporters and the local community. What has become clear since this announcement from the Dulwich Hamlet’s Football Club Committee, and the local and national media attention that followed, is just how much people care about Dulwich Hamlet. The level of support for the Club has been overwhelming; not just from our own supporters and the local community, but from the wider football community around the world. This support suggests that, should the situation worsen, we will not go without a fight. The response to fundraising efforts has been terrific and we are very fortunate to have the 12thman scheme (@dhfc12 ) already in place. It provides a direct way of funding the team to make up any shortfall that has resulted from recent events. You can support the work we do by joining the Supporters’ Trust. I am pleased to say that over the last couple of weeks we have had a fantastic response from supporters, with over 150 new members signing up. This takes us to well over 500 members in total, which is the largest member base the Trust has ever reached. It was only less than a week before that we celebrated our 400th member (who is also one of our youngest), thanks to Tim Glenn signing up his young son George. George

he festive season is often a period that leaves many households close to financial ruin and family break-up. There is often a lack of planning for this seasonal spending spree as research from bobatoo revealed. Some 24% of households start their Christmas shopping in December and 53% start in October to November. Only 10% started their campaign before July. Here are 10 tips to help Christmas 2017 be filled with financial pleasure and not pain.

Keeping Dogs Happy & Healthy At Christmas
C
urrent reports say that we are in for a cold Christmas and we might even get snow. After indulging at the Christmas table one of the great seasonal pleasures is to take a long family walk and having a dog only adds to the experience. If the weather is really cold or wet, a few precautions will ensure you have a healthy and happy Christmas all round.
Slippery Snow & Ice Many of us seem to go stir crazy in the snow and decide to give our dog the equivalent of a year’s worth of aerobic exercise. We break out the ball chucker and run the dog until he can run no more. If your hound is already as fit as the proverbial butcher’s dog you might just get away with this sudden burst of extreme exercise. However, for those that gently walk their dog a few times a week this way disaster lies. The biggest risk is often to the cruciate ligament and this major injury will not only blow your bank balance but put your dog on crate rest for many weeks and even months. Mud, wet, snow and ice all create ideal conditions for dogs that run at full pelt to slip and slide as they try to make contact with the ball. It is this twisting action that places such force on ligaments that damage can occur. By all means walk in the snow and wet but instead of sending your dog rocketing out after multiple throws of a ball, try throwing the ball out and telling him to ‘leave’. This way the ball lands and is stationary before you release your dog to go after it. The dog goes into seeking rather than chase mode; he’s more likely to amble over to where he saw the ball land and use his nose to locate it. Not only is this game very satisfying and tiring, it teaches your dog self- control. If you do not have a strong ‘leave’ cue have your dog on a line or lead before releasing him to go after the ball. Another option is to teach your dog ‘find’. What could be more fun than finding items buried in snow or leaves. Your dog will, if anything, be more tired after a good game of ‘find’ outdoors than wildly chasing a ball. 40 | SE22 - December 2017
Salted Areas, Ice & Paws When the thermometer dips below freezing the salt and gravel trucks are out in force. Do look out for the tell-tale signs of salted paths and roads. Salt that gets into tiny cuts on pads or between pads will sting and hurt, it can also trigger a rash. If your dog is small you can carry him past the salted areas. Alternatively, consider protective bootees. Ensure you wash your dog’s paws when you return home. Owners of dogs with hairy feet should watch out for hard ice balls that can develop between the digits, under the pads. This can be incredibly painful and it may appear as though your dog has gone temporarily lame. Having a small flask of warm water and a cloth can mean you are able to remove the balls in situ.
Muddy Conditions Many of us will happily walk our dogs in the rain and mud and so we should. A pavement walk home can get rid of most of the mud but it is a good idea to wash paws on your return. Dogs with muddy paws can end up with ear infections because they have scratched and mud enters the ear canal.
Antifreeze Beware, some people think antifreeze is a great way to clear ice from the path. It can also drip off car windscreens. Antifreeze tastes like honey to dogs and cats and it will kill them. Do not let your pets lick road or path surfaces or puddles.
Coats Unless your dog is a young, hairy beast think about a coat for very cold, windy or rainy weather. Dogs with single coats or elderly and sick dogs will thank you.

I’m dreaming of a White Christmas…

his has always been my favourite time of year. When family and friends come together and forget their troubles or take a break from their busy lives for the holidays; It’s a season that can bring so much love, laughter and happiness into our lives. The celebratory atmosphere, the twinkling fairy lights and glistening decorations on trees, the scent of mulled wine in the air, the singing of festive songs and the joy that emanates from people celebrating the festivities together is for me a magical time of year. Decorating my home for Christmas has always excited me the most! I have been known to start planning my theme as early on as September! My family think I am absolutely bonkers of course! This year I’m planning on creating my own dream of a white Christmas, by making that magical atmosphere indoors rather than rely on the weather outdoors. To create this effect does not require going on a big spending spree, the purchase of a few cans of white spray paint can revitalise old baubles and tired looking decorations, with the addition of some snowflaked shapes cut out of white paper, candles and

the addition of some simple greenery or berries from outside will help you create this sophisticated look. The secret to pulling off this colour scheme is to keep it simple, let white dominate the overall look by using different shades and textures, using warm white fairy lights in different shapes and sizes, wrapping the presents up in rustic paper and tying them with hessian ribbons to place under the tree. Try to restrict any additional colour to simple highlight features. With strategically placed or hung natural greenery, pine cones or twigs, will create the effect of a magical white Christmas indoors. Take time to group items together and match them in with similar tones and textures, remember that it is the one time of year where a little bit of visual drama is appropriate. This natural, magical feel of Christmas can be achieved without breaking the bank, leaving you more to spend on food and drink (of course!). Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Experimenting and discovering the joy of creating their own sounds will be the catalyst for bigger things. • Take them to a concert - watching music, of whatever style, being performed live can spark a real interest in music.
Instrumental Lessons If your child starts to learn an instrument: • Allow for false starts – they might choose an instrument but then find it doesn’t suit them. Let them to try different instruments until they find the right one. • Keep practice regular. Better to practise a little every day than for two hours the night before their lesson. • Make it fun. Let them choose pieces they like they will be more driven to playing it well.

hris Dearmer, Director of Music at Alleyn’s School, tells us how to encourage our child to become – and stay – involved in music. Playing a musical instrument is known to have a positive effect on wellbeing at all stages of our lives. According to one study, 85% of adults who didn’t play a musical instrument said they wished they had learned. For children, we know that playing an instrument fosters confidence and team-spirit, as well as having a proven, positive impact on academic performance.
The Early Years There is much you can do to stimulate your child’s interest in music from a young age: • Sing to babies and toddlers as much as you can, and encourage them to sing along. • Expose them to different music. Play them different styles of music and talk about it. What do they like or dislike? What instruments can they hear? 44 | SE22 - December 2017
It can be hard to sustain a teenager’s interest in music as their horizons expand. They will thank you later though if you encourage them to continue now. Here are some pointers: • Encourage them to sing, whatever their instrument. The advantages are enormous (improved aural awareness, sight-reading, understanding of harmony, and well-being), yet many teens shy away, especially as their voices change. Their school will be giving the same message - encourage them to get involved with choirs or ensembles. • Find a balance. Practice is important, but a healthy balance with non-musical activities will also help to sustain enthusiasm. • Watch live music. If they love playing in the jazz band at school, take them to a jazz club, take ardent singers to a choral evensong, or pop fans to see their favourite artist. Christmas Cracker More cheerily this year Saturday 2 December is small shops Saturday and East Dulwich has our annual Christmas Cracker. Also well worth making a whole day of it as many local schools are also holding Christmas fairs that day and surrounding weekends – many have great stalls and if they can’t get you into the Christmas spirit nothing will! Parking Pressures Mount Every year we try calling on every resident in East Dulwich – usually you’re all out! Over the last six months the feedback on the doorstep has included considerable angst about parking pressures. Close to Dulwich Hospital and East Dulwich station, parking pressure has become significantly worse. This is partly from the introduction of controlled parking around North Dulwich Station. Southern charge the same fare whether you travel from North or East Dulwich stations. Being unable to park outside North Dulwich station has nudged some to park as close to East Dulwich station as possible. The other parking pressures come from the significant number of builders at Alleyn’s School, James Allen Girls School and the new Charter East Dulwich School. It is likely to get worse when 46 | SE22 - December 2017
the new health centre building works gets under way, probably in the new year. Once completed the new school and health centre will not have anywhere enough parking for staff. So it is likely a repeat consultation but over a wider area about whether residents now want a Controlled Parking Zone will take place. If you are experiencing parking pressures email - parkingreview@southwark.gov.uk equally if you feel the parking is fine you might want to let them know – it is important we get a balanced view. NB. Yearly residential Controlled Parking Zone parking permits cost £125/car, or £31.25 if you’re disabled or have a hybrid or electric vehicle. The last proposal was for it to operate Monday to Friday 11am-noon.
Cycling Spine With a rapidly growing London we need more people absolutely and as a proportion to use sustainable forms of transport such as walking and cycling. To help this a cycle ‘spine’ route is planned. The consultation for this is open until 4 December. The proposal is to change Adys Road, Crystal Palace Road, southern end of Landells Road to be more free flowing for all vehicles. The idea is this will make it safer for people cycling. To make it more free flowing a great deal of double yellow line are proposed, the removal of pedestrian refuge islands. To counter the greater speeds expected by people driving motor vehicles many more speed humps are proposed. Other parts of London have, instead of removing parking, have made roads cul-desacs to block rat running. I’d like to see CCTV controlled choke points such as Adys Road and Crystal Palace Road that are free for Southwark drivers but non Southwark drivers are charged a daily fee during rush hours. New Women’s Institute for Dulwich
Dulwich WI is a new group for local women meeting for fun social and charitable events. More than 100 women met at Dulwich Constitutional Club on 13th November with local federation representatives to talk about the ins and outs of establishing a new WI for East Dulwich. Prospective committee members were selected, much wine and cake were consumed and there was a cash prize and a bottle of champagne for raffle winners! Dulwich WI will be inaugurated 1st January and plan to meet on the second Monday of the month at the Dulwich Constitutional Club. Activities lined up for the first few months include, a raw fermented food masterclass, a chocolate and wine tasting, flower-arranging, book and magazine swap, park run club as well as evenings and afternoons to discover local bars, restaurants and galleries. Craft get-togethers are in the pipeline as well as more unusual pastimes such as belly dancing, selfdefence and laughing yoga! Theatre trips and outings will be opened up to family and friends too. The first meeting of 2018 is in the diary for 8th January. Until then prospective members are gearing up for a bauble-making workshop on Monday 11th December. Festive Well-Being
A
s I write this, the Christmas lights are already up in East Dulwich (although not yet lit) and the shops are beginning to look increasingly festive. For many, this build-up to Christmas is exciting and joyous. However, for many it is a time that is fraught with worry and pressure. It can also be a very lonely and isolating time for those who for whatever reason can’t spend Christmas with their family or friends. If you are dreading the festive season, remember you are not the only one – despite the messages that we get from TV adverts and the media generally, lots of people do not look forward to Christmas at all. It’s also important to remember that there is no ‘right’ way of doing Christmas – it’s about what works for you so as hard as this is to do, try to ease the pressure from yourself by not seeking to conform to the Christmas stereotypes. For those of you who wish that you could bypass Christmas, here are some tips to get through the next few weeks:
If You Are Spending Christmas Alone The People Care Association run a Christmas lunch for elderly and disabled Southwark residents at 1pm at Bacon’s College, Timber Pond Road, Rotherhithe, SE16 6AT. The Copleston Centre will be holding their annual Christmas Event for vulnerable or isolated local residents on Thursday 21 December 2017 and are looking for volunteers to help on the day. If You Are Worrying About Christmas Give yourself the space each day to switch off from the stress. Mindfulness or meditation can really help with this, but it’s really about whatever works best for you. It could, therefore, also be physical exercise, drawing, listening to music or reading – whatever it is that you feel helps to clear your mind, even if it is for a short time. Talk to friends and family – you’ll probably be surprised at how many others worry about Christmas and who can act as a support network. If you feel really desperate; call the Samaritans on 116 123 (it’s a Freephone number). Lots of people think that you need to be suicidal to call them but that’s not the case; they are a listening service for people in need of someone to share their problems with. If you are worried about money, try calling National Debtline which offers free, independent advice online via www.nationaldebtline.org and on 0808 808 4000.
