And So To Bed... Garden Talk with Janine Winlaw | Instagram @janinewinlaw It’s chilly out there, the lawn’s looking muddy and the borders tatty, but a bit of tidying now will make the garden look neat over the Christmas period and get you one step ahead for spring…

Cut Back… …but don’t be too tidy. Some perennials such as sedum have attractive seed heads that look great covered in frost or dew. Ornamental grasses also add winter structure as do dried out hydrangea heads – both can be pruned in spring. Cut back perennials that are looking tatty and brown such as peonies and Verbena bonariensis to around to 5cm from ground level. (Leave more tender plants such as penstemon until April or May after the frosts.) Wisteria can be pruned now and give roses a light trim, removing long or damaged shoots. Now they’re dormant, apples, pears, currants and autumn fruiting raspberries can also be pruned from now on. Likewise, trim off any dead, diseased or rubbing branches from shrubs and trees. Acers and birch are particularly suited to pruning now, before the sap starts to flow. But there’s no need to go overboard as many plants such as buddleja and late flowering clematis can wait until early February.

Reorganise And Plant… This is a good time to move plants that are in the wrong place – too big, not thriving or overcrowded, adding organic matter as you go. Since they’re dormant, as long as the ground’s not frozen, they will adjust to being moved or divided. Try to work on boards, so as not to compact the soil. You can also plant trees, shrubs and bare root fruit trees, soft fruit bushes and roses now.

Clear Up Throw away any annuals such as sweet peas and cosmos. You can always replace with cyclamen or viola for winter colour Keep raking leaves from the lawn and remove them from borders -– especially rose leaves with black spot (burn or destroy anything diseased rather than composting it). If you have masses of leaves, bag them up – making a few holes in the bag - and leave them at the end of 12 | SE22 - December 2020

the garden for fantastic leaf mould. Keep on top of weeds and clear up messy areas with piles of pots or clutter that create a winter home for snails and slugs. Clean and store stakes and garden furniture.

Mulch Finish off the borders with a mulch of bulky organic matter or bark, especially around anything recently pruned, newly planted or tender such as Verbena bonariensis or penstemon. This will improve soil texture, suppress weeds and add a bit of frost protection. (Ideally this is done before the soil gets too cold.)

Lawn Care If the weather’s mild you may still need to cut the grass in dry weather – on a high setting. But keep off the lawn if it’s wet or frosty.

Finally… Pick some holly, cotoneaster, ivy and other evergreens with berries for the festive period! Happy Christmas!

Five Signs Of Burnout

Fitness tips with Leanne Spencer | www.bodyshotperformance.com

How To Spot When You May Be On The Burnout Spectrum This month I’d like to talk to you about the five signs of burnout, that show you may be moving on that huge burnout spectrum. Perhaps a few red flags going up in terms of your health and wellbeing, all the way through to burnout. Now it’s a long way to go from these early warning signs, but it would be great, if we could identify these things to stop things in their tracks in the early part of that burnout spectrum. I was influenced by Gail North and Herbert Freudenberger‘s burnout spectrums. They created the burnout spectrum with 12 points.

1) Apathy And Anhedonia Apathy means you can’t be bothered and everything feels like an effort. Anhedonia is a loss of pleasure in things you would ordinarily find pleasurable. You used to love a game of tennis or a dog walk. Now you just don’t feel it. You don’t get the joy from it. Combined with apathy, you can’t be bothered to go out and do those things and try to get that joy back. This is a sign on the burnout spectrum.

2) Feeling Deeply Fatigued You feel deeply fatigued, real tiredness, tiredness in the bones. Tiredness perhaps that you just don’t seem to be able to overcome or even get enough sleep to overcome.

3) Finding It Hard To Shut Off You may feel you just can’t shut off. You might find that you’re dreaming about work or dreaming about some of the problems and anxieties in your life. That your mind is racing and you find it very, very difficult to close that off and to move on. You may find it challenging to get any headspace.

4) Mood Or Personality Changes Maybe somebody else, a spouse or a colleague has said, you know, you’re behaving a little differently. You seem unsettled. You appear distracted. You’re simply just not yourself. These changes in mood and behavioural problems can be a sign of being 16 | SE22 - December 2020

on the burnout spectrum. You may notice this in yourself as well. You may feel that you’re not your usual effervescent self.

5) The Body Keeps The Score This last point is arguably the most important, which is that the body keeps the score. Even if you’re able to push through, ploughing on regardless, which is so common in business and British culture. Know that you can ignore the signs the body sends you, but it does keep the score. You might notice hair loss. You might notice weight gain or weight loss. Experience other kinds of physical symptoms such as headaches, unexplained, aches and pains. I’ve even known more dramatic symptoms than that. For example, the scarring of a forehead. You can try and push these signs of burnout stuff aside and ignore the red flags to your health and wellbeing, but it will come back eventually to rear its head. So please don’t ignore it.

Link Age Southwark

Double your donation to Link Age Southwark this Christmas to help combat loneliness in our comm

L

ink Age Southwark is a vibrant local charity providing friendly volunteer support to isolated people aged over 60. They work to reduce loneliness by helping older people and those living with dementia to maintain active lives, by providing befriending, group activities, transport, and light DIY and gardening services across the community. The charity will soon be launching their Big Give Christmas Challenge with the opportunity to raise £24,000 in just 1 week! These funds will be used to reduce isolation and loneliness experienced by older people living in Southwark, by enabling Link Age Southwark to diversify the way they offer their groups, to include face-to-face, online platforms and conference calling. Ultimately, this will help them to ensure nobody is excluded in the community. Link Age Southwark’s social and activity groups provide a much-needed break in the week for some, a chance to socialise and move about. For others, the groups may be the only time they speak to another person for several days or weeks at a time. Last year alone, the charity ran 26 groups who met 758 times, with a record 6,160 attendees in total.

If you are unable to donate at this time but still want to support Link Age Southwark’s Christmas Challenge, you can do so by telling your friends, family and colleagues or sharing the campaign on social media. The feedback the charity receives from their evaluations confirms that the groups have a clear social function and increase attendee’s energy levels. 96% of group members reported they were either happy or very happy with the groups, with one member saying, “Group session gives me a big uplift. We sing and talk. It’s nice to socialise.” Another member’s husband commented on the impact the musical group has on his wife, who lives with dementia; “She used to love music […] and the group helps her to connect some way through music.” So far, the charity have moved 6 of their groups online and had 1 group meeting in a COVIDsafe way, up until the latest national restrictions. As government guidelines continue to change, it is essential for Link Age Southwark to adapt and expand the way they offer their groups to the older people they work with. Sophie Wellings, Director at Link Age Southwark says: “2020 has been a challenging and complex year for us all. We have been overwhelmed by the support and goodwill that we have received from the community. The money that we raise from the Big Give contributes significantly each year in supporting SE22 - December 2020 | 19

Christmas Memo Pets Corner with Leonie St Clair | www.londondogstraining.co.uk

Twelve Days Of Christmas Memo For Lockdown Puppy Owners Lockdown has seen an unprecedented increase in puppy ownership. Many of you are first time dog owners. With the Christmas season now only weeks away, I felt it would be useful for newbie owners to have a quickie Christmas pitfalls puppy guide. I have included links to further information. 1) Many human foods are toxic and even deadly for dogs. Chocolate, dried fruits, grapes, nuts, onions are just a few of the dangerous ingredients that can land your pup at the vet, or worse. 2) Christmas plants and decorations can also be very dangerous if ingested. Cabling for fairy lights and batteries are just one example of things your puppy may try to chew. See: www.bluecross.org.uk/pet-advice/christmasdangers-dogs 3) Don’t forget external hazards like anti-freeze, sometimes present in floor cleaners. It tastes like nectar to your pup but is deadly in even tiny quantities. 4) Think about using baby gates, a pen or crate so your puppy or dog can be given a safe area when you cannot supervise. 5) Remember pups need 18-20 hours’ sleep a day. Ensure your pup has a quiet area and encourage chew and settle periods. No-one wants an adrenalin charged puppy. 6) At Christmas and other holidays, it is easy to get caught up in festivities and forget the young animal’s needs. Ensure your pup has an array of suitable edible chews, of different textures. These will keep her occupied when you are busy with presents or cooking. Remember, teething can be a protracted affair and the back teeth are still bedding in at twelve months. 7) Take time to teach your pup problem solving games as well as letting him run around. Brain work will tire and relax your pup beautifully. 20 | SE22 - December 2020

8) Teach your pup to find things, put part of her daily food ration into toys so she can chew and snuffle for the goodies. 9) If your pup is short-haired, do get a coat for rainy or cold days. 10) Be careful not to over exercise pups and young dogs in wet or slippery conditions. A bad slip can cause lasting damage to tender puppy joints. 11) Fireworks season continues and before you know it, we’ll have New Year celebrations too. Read up about how to prepare. www.dogstrust.org.uk/help-advice/dog-care/ fireworks 12) Don’t forget to leave your pup on her own for short periods. In lockdown and on holidays pups soon get used to you being around all the time and will suffer when that stops. Keep up separation training. www.abtc.org.uk/owners/covid-19/ Have a wonderful Christmas with your puppy and let’s look forward to a better year in 2021!

Communicating Effectively Education News from Alleyn's | www.alleyns.org.uk Karen Lane, Speech and Language Therapist at Alleyn’s Junior School, talks about how we can help develop our child’s speech.

P

arents and carers play an integral role in helping children develop speech and language skills. Many of us may have experienced the temptation to hand a child a device to distract them, especially with the added stresses of our current challenging times, but are we missing out on opportunities to teach our toddlers and young children real communication skills?

Play Creative play is essential for unlocking emerging vocabulary. Teddy bears’ picnics, den building, Playdoh, and sand play are all great shared activities, and for babies as young as six months you can use single word naming to model words. By 12 months a toddler should have 50 – 100 words. After that you can model two- and three-word phrases to help your child develop short sentences by two years old. Remember, there is a wide range of “normal” so don’t panic if your two-year-old isn’t speaking in sentences – they may need a little longer.

Articulation Sounds develop at different ages and not all children speak clearly at first. If other people can’t understand your child at three however, it might be time to get an assessment. Therapy waiting times can be long so it’s better to seek a GP referral early than assume your child will grow out of it. When children have difficulty expressing their thoughts and feelings or find it hard to understand rules for social interaction, their frustrations can result in behaviour difficulties. Be patient and try to understand why your child is frustrated. Get down to their level, maintain eye contact and give them time to express themselves.

Questions You might be keen to impart your knowledge to your child and fill them up with answers to 22 | SE22 - December 2020

questions like, “What is the capital city of...?”. This might impress the in-laws but rote learning is less valuable than asking open ended questions like “What do you think about…?” or “I wonder what would happen if…”, which are more likely to stimulate a child’s thinking, develop a love of learning and also their ability to use reasoning skills when they start school.

Reading Reading to your child can help them develop a thirst for good stories. Even after they have learned to read, continue reading to your child to help expand their vocabulary, their understanding of story structures and to provide you both with valuable time together. Play family games like Boggle, Blurt, and Articulate too, to boost your child’s vocabulary. Delayed speech and language development can impact a child’s progress at school. If you feel worried, trust your instincts and consult your GP for a referral to a Speech and Language Therapist. Empowering children to communicate effectively can help them unleash a lifelong love of learning.

Financial Matters

With David Frederick FCCA | Marcus Bishop Associates | marcus-bishop.com

Christmas In An Unprecedented Time I guess if Stanley Adams was still alive in 2020 he would have rewritten his classic song “What a difference a day makes” and given us “What a difference a year makes”. Perhaps the first verse would read, 365 days later has brought us a pandemic with irreversible change. For as we look forward to Christmas and waving goodbye to 2020, we are all in a transformational different place from 365 days ago, yet we have to face the arrival of Christmas and all the things that we all assign to it. In many or some quarters the religious significance has long since been lost or forgotten. The economic landscape for everyone is different from what was perceived, planned or imaginable at the start of the year. Households across our region and nationwide has felt the effects of Covid-19. Whether it is furlough, loss of employment, business shut down or any combination plus more, households are experiencing the ongoing effects. All these transformation and unplanned effects have a direct impact on our Christmas plans. Therefore how will households cope with the festive season of 2020, whether in lockdown (stay-at-home safe) or tier 1, 2 or 3? This will be the real test of financial acumen and challenge. To understand how households were facing up to the challenge, some of our readers shared their opinions. “Control the controllables is the mantra for families this Christmas. Can you purchase less expensive smaller items for gifts? Are brands important or is there a similar less expensive alternative available that can also help the local economy. Shop local to save the high street. Make your own rather than buying in can help save pounds. From crackers to Christmas cards for family- recycle and reuse.” said Lawrence Wilson a small business owner with a young family. Local accountant and financial trainer, Jackie Stewart with teenage children, added 24 | SE22 - December 2020

“parents should not be going broke buying presents. If parents talk to their children, they’ll learn that children are more resilient than they are give them credit. Sometimes buying lavish gifts for children is a reflection how parents feel and not whether it’s what the child needs.” Jackie also added, “children want your time and for children love is spelt T I M E. The lesson is children value the time spent with them greater than being showered with lavish boxes of gifts.” Petra Boucher a local VA provided an alternative strategy that will see her through Christmas 2020. “Experience has taught me that December and January can be expensive months. So for several years I have arranged my finances so I my recurring debts are paid via direct debit. However, they are paid over 10 months or less which means I have no direct debits in December and January. This reduces any financial pressure on me for Christmas.”

Seven Tips for Christmas 2020 Consequently, for Christmas 2020, more than ever consider the following seven tips: 1) Set a budget for any planned expenditure; 2) Spend within your budget. The lesson of 2020 is tomorrow events will not occur as planned; 3) Avoid any form of borrowing; 4) Keep it simple, remember just like how children spell love, happiness can also be spelt TIME! 5) Be creative, ask what can we make rather than buy; 6) Past behaviour may not serve us well today. Don’t be afraid to substitute items in your shopping basket, eg will replacing turkey with chicken harm you? 7) Build on that community spirit of sharing, rekindled and witnessed across our communities since March 2020. As we approach a memorable Christmas season 2020, households may wish to remember the words from Stanley Adams’ original hit, “What a difference a day makes, twenty-four little hours”

Ten things to consider when buying new window & door replacements

T

here are many reasons you might want to replace windows and doors in your home from reducing drafts, improving heat insulation to home improvement and renovations. With thoughtful consideration and the help of an expert, such enhancements can increase the value of your property and ensure a long-lasting investment. For this reason, we introduce you to Ayrton Bespoke, experts in period replacement timber doors and windows. Ayrton specialise in accurately replicated sash or casement windows and individually made front and back doors that will enhance the character of your period home. They have an impressive reputation with more 5* Google Reviews than any other timber window and door company in London. The windows are built by the finest craftsmanship, whilst using only high quality slowgrown redwood from Latvian forests for durability and strength. This enables Ayrton to guarantee the finest quality there is to offer at affordable prices. To ensure you are 100% happy with your decision to fit these bespoke pieces, Ayrton will even send a surveyor round to run a satisfactory site survey to confirm the pricing.

Before you invest in new window or door replacements, have a look at Ayrton’s 10 important decisions for window and door replacements: 1) Buy from a local window specialist (not a builder – they don’t make windows and doors) 2) See the products up close before you buy 3) Property is valuable – use timber – and accurately replicate the original features 4) Don’t buy on price – buy cheaply and you will pay twice 5) Look for comprehensive guarantees 6) See examples of local work – even talk to an existing customer 7) Good windows and doors take time to make – allow 12 weeks 8) Expect answers on the detail – where is the wood from? What type of paint? Security? 9) Make sure the company also fits the windows and doors and does NOT sub-contract 10) Check out their reviews Ayrton Bespoke is London’s leading period timber window and door replacement company. Visit their showrooms in Wandsworth, Crouch End or Dulwich www.ayrtonbespoke.com. SE Magazine readers will receive an exclusive 15% offer off all windows and doors. SE22 - December 2020 | 25

s we clatter towards Christmas, it is true to say that the youthful and somewhat injury depleted Dulwich Hamlet men’s side is yet to burn as brightly as many fans had hoped. A few draws, a few more defeats, and a limp departure from the FA Cup in the last qualifying round have left SE22’s finest camped in the foothills of the league. If ever a club is driven by the roar and jangle of its home crowd it is the sons of Edgar Kail. And boy has Champion Hill ever missed its roar. Yet hope burns eternal in The Rabble’s breast. Surely, the fans cry, the time must come when the team pull up their pink and blue socks, find their football mojo, and start ascending the treacherous slopes of National League South like a latter day Norgay. Well Amen to that and watch this space sports fans. Better news elsewhere from the Dulwich

Hamlet universe however where the ever spicy Dulwich Hamlet Women’s team have put in some stellar performances recently. Just prior to lockdown, DHWFC took on high-flying Dartford, coming from 0-2 behind to win a ripsnorter 3-2. All this in front of a rocking record crowd of 586. The Hamlet women now go top of their league. Unfortunately during lockdown all football below the National league has been put on ice. So while the “elite” Dulwich Hamlet men’s team continue to play behind closed doors, the women’s team must wait until 2 December to find out whether and when they can resume their allconquering season. In the meantime however, the club is very much alive and well. For one, all Dulwich Hamlet home games continue to be streamed absolutely free on the club’s Tube channel (www.youtube. com/c/DulwichHamletTV). So you can don your

pink and blue, bellow at the screen, and cheer on your Hamlet heroes from the comfort of your own home. The experience is so life like you can even apply to be a virtual mascot at a Dulwich Hamlet game. Check out https://dhst.org.uk/news/virtualmascots-wanted for how you can do just that. If you’re feeling generous while you’re at it, you can chip in a few virtual coins to sustain the brilliant media team at https://www.justgiving.com/ crowdfunding/dhfctv. Talking of generous, Dulwich Hamlet fans have raised over £1200 through the sale of Hamlet branded face masks. Thanks to all those who have helped. And finally, in the news we’ve all been waiting for, you can now buy the new replica Dulwich Hamlet kit. This season’s shirt is right smart and will render any wearer the envy of Lordship Lane. So with Christmas approaching, why not take a look at all the Hamlet merchandise

available via the Supporters’ Trust website www.dhst.org.uk and buy yourself or a loved a special gift in pink and blue. Last order date for Christmas which guarantees delivery is Thursday 3. Any orders placed after this date will certainly be processed, but might not arrive in time for the big day. A merry Christmas to all from Champion Hill. And keep your eyes on the club website (www. dulwichhamletfc.co.uk) for news and updates on fixtures.

SE22 Councillors Cllr Victoria Olisa | Victoria.olisa@southwark.gov.uk

East Dulwich Phase 2 traffic measures As we come to the end of Lockdown 2, local people are still dealing with the local traffic measures, that has closed some side streets near East Dulwich station (Melbourne Grove etc), installation of planters and quieter streets for cyclists and school children, however increased traffic from the recent burst water main and Thames Water works on the South Circular. At the time of going to press, ward councillors like myself have been discussing these traffic measures with local residents and business owners in recent Stakeholder.

What can be changed in the coming weeks? Council officers are looking to introduce slight changes to the business parking bays close to Lordship Lane, increase cycle hangers and parking and look to insert new parklets/ benches along Lordship Lane, to give some much needed relief to shoppers. Business bays are the top priority, as these can be installed in a matter of weeks, without a long formal decision-making process, so look out for the new revised business parking bays before the end of the year. Due to legal and constitutional process, parking changes won’t be taking place until January 2021. Key Milestones for the Phase 2 of the East Dulwich traffic measures, will include the following: January 2021: project review by local people and the council – no formal decision to be made April 2021: comprehensive traffic data collection by the council across the affected areas and roads Summer 2021: extensive public consultation of local residents and businesses. These public views will be fed into the final council office report which will go to the Cabinet Member (Catherine Rose) for a decision whether the scheme exists in its currents state, or significant changes or other options. We need 30 | SE22 - December 2020

as many local people to add their views at the formal Summer 2021 public consultation. With the current COVID-19 19 restrictions, the council is unable to carry out public face to face meetings, but please check your local noticeboards, Common Space website and other social media avenues for news of how to engage with you to listen to your views. Please still continue to email your local ward councillors at the following addresses: • Victoria.Olisa@southwark.gov.uk • James.McAsh@southwark.gov.uk • Charlie.Smith@southwark.gov.uk Or the Cabinet Member: Catherine.Rose@southwark.gov.uk Deputy Cabinet Member for LTNs: Radha.Burgess@southwar;gov.uk

Health Matters including COVID-19 19 etc) As the Chair of the Health Scrutiny Commission since May 2019, I have focused on the current service delivery for our residents within our care homes and those outside the borough (70% of provision), before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. The key learning so far, is that the council working with the CCG, NHS and local providers have provided the relevant PPE and other safety measures to keep our residents and staff safe. With this second lockdown, we are seeing the number of local COVID-19 fatalities declining, with our borough being selected as a pilot borough for rapid testing, e.g. 30 minutes. Testing centres are still at Peckham Pulse and Burgess Park. One of the centres was moved from Dulwich Park due to accessibility issues for local residents. We are waiting for NHS England to inform us when the vaccine will be available in the coming weeks and then how it will be administered to high priority residents such as those in care homes etc. For more information about the Health Scrutiny Commission and its focus, please do not hesitate to contact me at: victoria.olisa@southwark.gov.uk

During lockdown in Spring, the number of people they were supporting on a weekly basis increased from 30 to nearly 200. They expect to see another surge in demand during these last two months of the year. In Southwark, 40% of children live in poverty - for these children and their families, Christmas can be a particularly difficult time. CSCH has recently launched it’s Christmas Hamper Appeal, raising money to provide local

The Last Word – Lauren Turner The one thing you couldn’t do without? I know this is a very typical answer, however……. coffee! Working six days a week to keep my business going definitely needs a strong coffee in the morning before I wake up and most certainly something I couldn’t do without. I try to support independent businesses as much as possible and so you can find me in Jade’s Boulangerie or Kanella & Co. grabbing my morning coffee.

The most famous person you’ve met? Pleased to say we have had a few famous people come to our lovely medical clinic, however I am sworn to secrecy to the grave on that one!

Describe your perfect weekend Getting towards that end of the spectrum where I would consider a relaxed weekend including a takeaway (I adore the Chinese from 148) or a lovely meal out on a Saturday evening with a few drinks in The Bishop as the perfect weekend……. Especially during winter when it’s cold. My name is Lauren Turner, I’m 32 years old and current business owner of a new Medical Clinic based in Lordship Lane. I am a nurse by background and also live in the East Dulwich area.

How long have you lived in the area? I have lived in the area for the last seven years since moving all the way over from Ireland. I don’t think I will be able to move back to Ireland at any point, especially after living in London which is such a vibrant city and has so much to offer.

What brought you here? I initially came here to complete my nurse training at University and then following this, work in a very busy London Hospital Emergency Department. After meeting my partner around this area, I definitely plan to stay for the long term and settle down here.

What do you most value about the area? I really love the community spirit in the area I live in. During the pandemic, my street has pulled together in order to support everyone, both elderly and young. This has enabled us to get to know each other more and also help out those in need. Being able to rely on neighbors during this time is fantastic. 32 | SE22 - December 2020

Where are you to be found Saturdays? Saturday is one of our busiest days in the medical clinic and so for the most part of the day I am working! However, I absolutely love it and so cannot complain.

Cafe, pub or bar? That’s definitely a tough one. I think café would have to be my answer! I love meeting up with friends and having breakfast or lunch in East Dulwich and treating myself when I have a free minute. Although, in this current climate I have forgotten what it’s like to be in a bar and almost certainly looking forward to this when things normalise again.

Book I am currently reading? I love a good autobiography and I am very interested in other people’s lives and how they came to be where they are today. I have just started ‘Becoming’ by Michelle Obama.

My perfect holiday.. I’m definitely a city girl and love exploring, rather than a relaxing sun holiday. My perfect getaway would have to be somewhere like New York, where it is mainly hustle and bustle.
