Welcome It was difficult to get in to the Valentine’s Day spirit when I was putting the magazines together this month; it was freezing! Hopefully it will have warmed up a little and you can take a stroll around the area buying some of the wonderful, local chocolate and sweets discovered by Lawrence Roullier White on his shopping page, p28. All in the name of love! I can’t quite believe it is a year since the fantastic East Dulwich Picturehouse opened on Lordship Lane. Find out what else has been going on locally with Sarah Pylas’ Around Dulwich column on page 10. Rigby & Mac are holding their brilliant Mother’s Day Competition again this year, find out the full details on page 20.

Mother’s Day Portrait Competition 2016!

The Last Word this month goes to Alice Solantania Saga. Alice is a fine arts photographer and can be seen taking wonderful self-portraits on Peckham Rye. Read all about her on page 48. ward winning Dulwich based stores, the Dulwich Trader, ED and Tomlinsons will once again be running their hugely popular Mother’s Day Portrait Competition.

Open to children from Reception to Year 6 at a number of participating local schools, the competition asks children to submit portraits of their mothers or important people in their lives. First run by the Dulwich Trader over 15 years ago, the competition encourages interaction between local schools, parents and businesses. The only requirement is that the entries should be bold, bright and beautiful. Last year the competition really captured the imagination of local children and the Dulwich Trader stores were swamped with well over 400 fantastic entries from 14 local schools, panicking mothers and schools were still dropping off masterpieces well past the deadline. Once again the judging panel will include awardwinning portrait artist and former Dulwich Hamlet student, Julie Bennett (www.juliebennett.co.uk). Julie has been blown away by the creativity, effort, talent and passion on show in previous years. Ranging from poster paint to sculpture and taking in everything between – the range and quality of entries was incredible. Choosing

winners is always a very difficult task and we are sure this year will be no different. Winners of the various categories will each receive a Dulwich Trader voucher to give to their mother or special person. The winners and runners up and 100’s of selected works will be displayed at the Dulwich Trader, ED and Tomlinsons from Friday 26th February until Monday 7th March to coincide with Mother’s Day on Sunday 6 March. It’s quite a spectacle! All those that are not displayed will be returned to pupils so that they can give them to their mothers in time for Mother’s Day. The participating schools at this stage are: Alleyn's Junior, DUCKS, Dulwich Hamlet, Heber, Oakfield, Rosemead, Elmwood, Paxton and Rosendale.

Out & About By Sarah Pylas

I

’ve never really been one to partake in a completely Dry January - more of a slightly damp one - but if you managed to go the entire month without a single glass of your favourite tipple, well done! You are now free to enjoy a sopping wet February! Returning back to Slimming World in the New Year did provide me with the much-needed motivation to avoid the fabulous eateries on our high street and stay home and cook instead. Although, that makes January sound far more boring than it actually was, as we invited friends over for dinner on a couple of occasions. Entertaining at home is definitely the new going out! We may not have been ready to venture out to all our favourite local drinking establishments last month, but Jamie at The Palmerston was more than happy to offer us his advice on what to cook for a small dinner party at home. Not only did he share with us his favourite recipe for roast sirloin of beef, but also told us the best place to buy it – The Butchery in Forest Hill. They were incredibly helpful and provided us with a quality cut of meat, sourced from a small farm. Our next gathering at home was with another group of local friends who came over for a Greek night! We served traditional Greek dishes such as kleftiko, spanakopita and a selection of dips from my new recipe book Secrets from Yiayia’s Greek Kitchen (shameless plug!), all washed down with a few carafes of Greek wine. However, if it is restaurant quality food you are after and want to enjoy it in a more intimate setting, the East Dulwich Supper Club could be for you. Angela made it along to the January event and loved watching the professional chefs prepare dinner before her very eyes. All the food is seasonal, beautifully presented and served in Suzanne James’s industrial kitchen! Visit

suzannejames.co.uk/supperclub for details of how to join. Now the hibernation period is officially over, I am looking forward to getting out and about again. Maybe even a Mum’s night out-out at the new cabaret night Rouges at Rivoli on the forth Saturday of the month. I’m not much of a (sober) dancer, but I’ve heard really great things about this truly fabulous venue. With half term fast approaching, it will soon be time to wrap up warm and get back outdoors. Although after several laps of the park, you may prefer an indoor activity to keep those little fingers frost-free. There are many fun activities for kids at The Horniman Museum, including dinosaur themed craft activities. Dulwich Books are also holding an interactive storytelling session at their shop in West Dulwich. Slightly further afield in Woolwich on 6th February, Boppin’ Bunnies and CBeebies are hosting a joint musical event with Andy Day, star of Andy’s Dinosaur Adventures. And… pour. Visit our website for details of all local news, events and ticket information. You can also find us on Facebook or follow us on Twitter @arounddulwich.

Hectic Host

St Valentine’s Day

L

ove it or hate it, it is that time of year when we are encouraged to express our fondness for our loved ones, or become a part time stalker and send the bewildered unsuspecting unsolicited, anonymous mail.

If you are embracing the day and celebrating an existing relationship, or hoping to take a new one to a new level, as with anything in life you want to demonstrate a little effort had gone into the planning. Here are a couple of ideas to help the hectic, host a romantic evening with minimal fuss. With St Valentine’s Day falling on a Sunday this year this is a golden opportunity to organise something a little less rushed, but the danger is the day could easily degenerate into an episode of Come Dine with Me. Spare yourself the stress of getting hot and flustered in the kitchen whilst your guest or partner is left alone contemplating your CD collection and getting hot and flustered drinking too much wine. One thing we are not short of in this wonderful part of London is beautiful restaurants, but you had better book early, so make your lunch or supper reservation soonish. This is going to be hard but after the main course, decline the dessert and say that you have a surprise waiting at home. Who could not fail to be wooed by such a romantic suggestion and when you get home and remove your own handmade pudding and chilled bottle from the fridge, you will have melted their heart. I am not going to go into detailed recipes here, they are easily and readily available in countless books, but here is a list of fail-free ideas and some quick hacks to make them even easier. The problems with pudding is that presentation is everything, therefore you have to admire one that has mess in its name. No one can mess up an Eaton Mess, especially if you do not bother with the hardest bit, baking the meringues, but instead buy them from somewhere like the Cheese Block or Boulangerie Jade both on Lordship Lane. You can make a fool proof fool by simply stirring a tablespoon or so of fruit compote into some whipped double cream.

12 | SE22 - February 2016

I cannot think of anything that might go wrong with Affogato, and the caffeine / sugar combination has obvious stamina merits on this day in particular. The key here is really good coffee, again we have no shortage of wonderful establishments offering fantastic ground beans but you also want an amazing ice cream. As an alternative to the traditional vanilla why not try the rich and tempting chocolate and hazelnut Bacio, £9 for 500 ml, from Oddono’s on Lordship Lane. Finally what to drink? You could serve a cheery Cherry Brandy by Bramley & Gage, £14.50, from Franklin’s Farm Shop or what better than the romantically named Pas de Deux organic dessert wine from Domaine Nigri, £15.99, from La Cave de Bruno on Lordship Lane. Vegetarian Gratin

Here is a recipe for a lovely vegetarian gratin that can easily be adapted to work for meat eaters too.

4

Ingredients • 4 Tablespoons Filippo Berio Extra Virgin Olive Oil • 2 Red Onions Finely Sliced • 2 Cloves of Garlic Finely Chopped • 2 Teaspoons Oregano • 750g Aubergine cut into 1cm Cubes • 400g Tin Chopped Tomatoes • 2 Tablespoon Balsamic Vinegar • 3 Tablespoon Fresh Basil Roughly Chopped • 100g Parmesan Cheese Finely grated • 300g Courgettes cut into Ribbons • 200g Mozzarella Balls

1

14 | SE22 - February 2016

Method 1) Prepare your ingredients preheat your oven to 180°C. 2) Heat 2 tablespoons olive oil in a large saucepan & add the onion, garlic & half of the oregano. 3) Over a medium heat, slowly sweat the onion & garlic mix for about 5 minutes or until onion is tender & translucent. 4) Turn up to a high heat, add the rest of the olive oil & aubergine & cook for a further 3-4 minutes or until aubergine is nearly cooked. 5) Add the tomatoes & vinegar & simmer for 2 minutes. 6) Stir in the basil & half the Parmesan. 7) Spread half the mix over the bottom of an over proof dish, followed by a layer of the courgette ribbons & then repeat to give layers similar to a lasagne. 8) Tear the mozzarella & evenly spread over the top of the courgette ribbons. 9) Scatter over the remaining Parmesan & then drizzle with extra virgin olive oil & pop into the oven for 15 minutes or until golden brown & bubbling. For a slight variation replace the mozzarella with Gorgonzola & sprinkle with deep fried sage leaves & toasted walnuts. For the meat eaters add some nice big pieces of an Italian spiced sausage to the mix.

Fitness Tips

Five Habits of Consistently Fit People

T

here are some people who can identify the connection between exercise and the feeling of being fit, and form lasting habits that mean they can sustain their fitness. Others struggle to get into a rhythm and find themselves exercising and dieting in a rollercoaster cycle of ups and downs. That can be mentally exhausting. Having spent a few years running a personal training company, as well as following a fairly disciplined exercise regime myself, I’ve observed the traits and behavioural patterns that consistently fit people display. It’s important to mention that it’s not about any individual thing, but more about how you can blend these traits to develop that consistency. Here are my five habits of consistently fit people:

They don’t rely on guesswork There is now a wide range of wearable technology that can tell you how you’re performing in different types of exercise. There are also apps that enable you to track what you’re eating. A DNA test can tell you what your requirements are for key vitamins and minerals; your sensitivity to lactose, gluten, carbohydrates and saturated fat; and what the best type of exercise is for you based on your genes.

They know when to increase training loads and when to rest This is really important. You must listen to your body, and learn to read the signals it sends you and then have the discipline to respond to those signals and messages. Some of my most notable improvements to strength and fitness have come after a period of reduced training and increased rest. The body keeps the score, and ignoring the warning signs can be counterproductive to your health and fitness.

They have an active body and an active mind I have yet to meet anyone who has a consistent diet and exercise program who isn’t a very active person, mentally and physically. They read, whether it’s online or print, novels or newspapers. They question, and are naturally curious about things. They want to move, to explore, and to challenge 16 | SE22 - February 2016

themselves. They are unafraid to ‘get comfortable being uncomfortable’, and enjoy seeing their selfesteem and self-confidence soar as a result.

They are used to setting SMART goals SMART goals are Simple, Measureable, Achievable, Realistic and Time-bound. I often see people fail because the goals they set themselves were too tough. Start small, then build on your progress. This applies to dieting and exercise. Any diet that cuts out a key food group or involves a dramatic calorie reduction for example, is doomed to failure. We advise our clients to identify three aspects of their diet to work on, and take the time required to interweave those changes into their lifestyle. Once that’s achieved, look to another three things.

They see the bigger picture A sustainable (and therefore successful) diet and exercise program requires you to see the bigger picture. People who achieve consistent success in this area understand that good health is about many different things. To give you an idea, some of these things include:  managing stress; getting into a good sleep routine; having rules around your smartphone and computer at night; maintaining healthy relationships; hydration; having good self-esteem; eating a balanced diet; knowing when to train and when to rest; walking regularly; remembering to laugh; doing a job you like and that is authentic to you. What’s On - February Thursday 4 February: Private View of ‘Painting the Mousetrap Tour Venice & London’

Saturday 6 February: Graffiti Classics 7pm

The latest works by Michael Fenner at the Jeannie Avent Gallery, 14 North Cross Road, SE22 9EU. Private View Thur 4 Feb 2016 from 7pm-10pm (The exhibition runs until Tues 16th Feb.)

Thursday 4 February: NEW VOICES with Monica Wood & Jem Lester 7pm Tickets are £10 and include a glass of wine and a proof copy of Monica’s novel The One-in-a-Million Boy. Monica Wood, already an award-winning author in the US, will present her debut UK novel The One in a Million Boy, a heart-wrenching book due for publication in April. A story of an unlikely friendship between a mentally sharp, determinedly independent woman of 104 and a world-recordsobsessed eleven-year-old boy, this UK debut is insightful, inventive and full of surprises. Mother's Day 2016

Mother’s Day Portrait Competition 2016!

A

ward winning Dulwich based stores, the Dulwich Trader, ED and Tomlinsons will once again be running their hugely popular Mother’s Day Portrait Competition.

Pets Corner

Does your pet love you?

W

ith Valentine’s Day close, it felt right to look at the relationships we have with our pets, and to ask whether the frequently intense emotions we feel towards our cats, dogs and even pet birds, are truly reciprocated? There’s no doubt that the human animal bond helps many of us cope with the pressures of the modern world. It seems that owning an animal, especially the kind that we like to kiss and cuddle, has all kinds of proven health benefits for us. But what about the animals themselves, can we tell if they love us, or are our pets merely cute but well equipped, con artists? The experts do have a few clues and while there are no definitive answers it is increasingly the view that some pets are capable of a range of humanlike emotions, including love. Dog fans will swear the pooch is top of the tree in the devotion stakes, but it is actually parrot owners who can claim to pride of place where besotted pets are concerned. Who’d have thought that a bird brain might be on par with a human brain. But, it is true, our feathered friends not only lead complex social lives in the wild, even communicating in regional ‘parrotese’, they also bond for life. In the absence of a parrot mate, many bird owners find they have become the object of amorous fixation. And, because parrots bond so tightly with their chosen mate, this can present all kinds of problems for the human owner, who may find partners, children and close friends all under attack from the jealous, possessive bird. Given their instinctive love and devotion wouldbe owners should think very, very carefully about parrot ownership and what amounts to a lifelong cross species ‘marriage’. Unlike dogs our feline friends are not so well domesticated that they depend on us utterly and it is no surprise that cats are now the most popular pet by far. All a cat needs is some territory

24 | SE22 - February 2016

of his own and a regular source of food to survive. But do cats ever feel more than cupboard love? The jury is out, but it is thought that some cats are more social than others and do show signs of affection, if you know what to look for. Aside from showing anger or fear, cats are not designed for extravagant displays of emotion. However, a cat that flags his tail and moves purposefully towards you holds you in high esteem, if not affection. Beware a heavily fluffed up tail though, that can spell anger. Rubbing around you and head butting (bunting) is now thought to be more about genuine affection than a scenting and ownership exercise. Slow eye closing is certainly a sign of trust, if not more. Try it out and see if your cat responds. But purring, once thought to be a sign of pleasure, is now thought to be more about communicating a desire for something or to prolong an event. Paradoxically, cats also purr when they are in pain. Cats that chirrup and ‘chat’ to you also may feel some sort of bond but whether your puss truly loves you is unclear. Much more research has been carried out on dogs and we now know that owner and pet can experience internal changes that mirror the intensity of the parent child bond. Scientists are now beginning to think that dogs do feel a kind of love for their owners, although this is a physiological definition; what is sad and unclear is whether our dogs know we love them back.

“What I love about Jackie’s work is that her materials are very unconventional and will disrupt our students’ expectations of what art can be,” says Jose Campos, “but they are also very accessible because you’re curious about what she is doing.”

Jackie’s installation is inspired by sculptor Barbara Hepworth, recreating some of her forms using hair rather than stone. “The ID gallery is about exploring identity so using pieces made from hair seems relevant because hair is important to people’s identity,” explains Jackie.

Join David Aaronovitch and Jo McMillan to discuss an upbringing on the fringes of political life. Tracing the decline of the communist tradition in Britain, Party Animals is a deeply personal account of what it’s like to grow up in a family on the far-left. Written by David Aaronovitch, a wellknown journalist and commentator, it is a memoir that stands out from the crowd. Jo McMillan’s debut novel Motherland, published in hardback last year, is an incredible story of a childhood in struggle. In this case the struggle is that of thirteen-year-old Jessica, whose mother Eleanor is unerring in her attempts to radicalise the sleepy midlands town of Tamworth. Unfortunately for Jessica, those attempts are mostly met with indifference and hostility. But a visit to the Democratic Republic of Germany beckons… You can buy tickets for events at both locations online at www.dulwichbooks.co.uk, by email at hello@dulwichbooks.co.uk, on the phone on 020 8670 1920 or in Dulwich Bookshop, 6 Croxted Road, SE21 8SW.

Dulwich Hamlet FC - News

Hamlet Attendances Continue To Rocket As Top Spot Is Maintained!

D

ulwich have entered the new year in pole position to clinch promotion from the Isthmian League after a highly impressive festive period. Despite the clubs rightful reputation for free flowing ‘sexy football’, the team are also demonstrating an ability to grind out results, something which was occasionally missing in last years charge at promotion. They may have been positioned just a week apart but Hamlet clearly demonstrated this versatility across the games against Grays Athletic and Kingstonian. The visit to Essex to take on Grays will largely be remembered for the officials and their loss of control that risked turning the game into a farce. The game kicked off with many of the Hamlet faithful trapped on a broken down train and they may have wished they were trapped a little longer when they entered the stadium to see their team concede a needless penalty. The resulting kick was thankfully poor, with Wilson diving low to his right to comfortably save. Hamlet pressed forward and began to create chances, Carew as always was looking dangerous from free kicks and the close control of McDonald was worrying the Grays defence. The deadlock was broken early in the second half when McDonald was gifted a chance he duly took when the opposition defender was deceived by the bobbly pitch. Chances fell to both teams but the real drama began in 69th minute when Grays were awarded another penalty following a perfectly legal challenge from Jordan Brown. The Dulwich protests were prolonged, but didn’t stop Grays man Fortnam-Tomlinson from slotting home. The debate with the officials continued and saw Ashley Carew awarded two yellow cards for his extended discontent with the decision. When assistant manager Junior Kadi was sent to the stands for his part in the protests, it seemed that it could be a nervous final twenty minutes. However

36 | SE22 - February 2016

Hamlet looked determined to right the injustice of the penalty decision, forward they pushed- not satisfied with a single point and was the men in pink that looked the most likely victors. In 89th minute Nyren Clunis won a free kick on the corner of the box. With set piece specialist Carew taking an early bath, Scannell swung the ball into the box, nobody managed to a get a head on the ball as it floated through the box unobstructed and nestled into the back on the net. The sense of injustice still fresh in the mouths of the players and supporters alike there were scenes of delight among the travelling supporters as the 2-1 victory was clinched. A week later on Boxing Day, Kingstonian were the visitors to the Hill. Labelled as potential title challengers themselves, another tight game was expected but the reality was anything but as Hamlet swaggered to a 5-1 victory. Within a week Hamlet had demonstrated with two very different performances why this could be the year that they clinch the title.

Financial Matters

Dividend Upheaval

A

s we begin to daydream about the arrival of spring, dividend income taxpayers await the introduction of what the chancellor George Osborne, termed "a major and long overdue reform to simplify the taxation of dividends" in his Summer Budget speech last July. From April 2016 the world of UK dividends will not be changed but transformed. This will have a major impact on the lives of all taxpayers receiving dividend income. Those most exposed to the fallout of this sea change are the increasing number of small company owners. The four main changes from April 2016 are as follows: 1) The 10% dividend tax credit will be abolished. 2) Individuals will have a £5,000 a year tax-free dividend tax allowance. This allowance will not reduce total income for tax purposes and will only apply to dividend income. 3) Dividend income exceeding the annual allowance will be taxed according to an individual's income tax band. Basic rate taxpayers will pay 7.5%, higher rate 32.5% and additional rate 38.1%. 4) No tax will be deducted at source; it will be paid through self-assessment. Dividends paid within pension funds and those received in shares from ISAs will remain tax-free. In addition, the £1,000 savings allowance (£500 for higher rate taxpayers) due to come into effect in April 2016 excludes dividend income. Despite these changes in UK dividends taxation, taxpayers have been reassured by the government that 85% of those affected by this change will pay either the same or less tax. Not being a sceptic, time will tell. It does seem unusual to undertake the greatest upheaval of our UK dividends taxation system for 40 years and yet the majority of taxpayers are left either unchanged or better off. According to the government the remaining 15% left worse off will be basic rate or non-taxpayers who

40 | SE22 - February 2016

receive dividends exceeding £5,000 a year. This will no doubt include the owners of small companies where the owners’ annual remuneration is often a combination of salary plus dividends. The gainers and losers will become abundantly clear from April and the reality may just be different from the prediction of the government. The government has sold this change on the utilitarian, greater good principle. However, there has been no announcement of the expected increase in tax yield arising from this shift in dividend taxation. Under the current system, dividends are paid as though 10% tax has already been deducted. This 10% is known as the dividend tax credit and is equal to a ninth of the dividend. For example, a £90 dividend has a £10 dividend tax credit attached to it. For basic rate taxpayers, the 10% tax is deemed sufficient and there is no more tax to pay. For higher and additional rate taxpayers the dividend and the dividend tax credit are added together and this figure is taxed according to an individual's income tax band at the following rates; 32.5% higher rate and 37.5% additional rate. As a result of this transformation, for the minority the total amount of dividend income received will count as part of the taxpayer's net adjusted income when calculating whether the £100,000 threshold for withdrawing the personal allowance is breached. Parents need to count all their dividend income to test whether the £50,000 threshold for the high income child benefit charge is breached. April is just around the corner and any taxpayer who is uncertain or believes the changes in the taxation of dividend income will affect them should become pro-active and seek advice. However, if you are certain that you are within the government’s 85% that will not be any worse off or may actually benefit, just carry on business as usual. No Need To Move

A

lovely family accosted me last Sunday morning. The kids were beautifully behaved as us grown-ups nattered away. They had stopped me wanting to tell me how disappointed they were that due to a lack of great school places they were planning to sell their home and leave the area. I was horrified. Over the last four years Cllr Rosie Shimell, former Cllr Jonathan Mitchell and I have worked tirelessly to ensure we have plenty of new great school places. Many in our community have helped to successfully campaigned for new free schools. I explained to them that we have three new local primary schools to add to the existing ones. All are expected to be outstanding – East Dulwich Harris Primary School, Judith Kerr Primary School and the Belham Primary School. They then talked about secondary schools. I explained all our local secondary schools are Ofsted rated outstanding. That we have a new East Dulwich Charter School opening in September and the results from all these school are better than the national and London averages by quite some margin. What is worrying is that we’ve clearly failed to tell people successfully or often enough about these achievements. Talking to school heads they tell me it can take 5-7 years for the whole community to recognize changes and take to new schools. Please please please if you have any thought of leaving the area from fear of not having great school places for your children call me. If you have pre school children you really don’t need to move to get a great schooling for your children. We now have enough great school places for your children for their whole school life. Bringing children up in London used to be a problem. Poor school results, etc. But London schools outshine schools in all other parts of the country. Your children also have all the amazing opportunities of living in such world city.

Friern Road Allotments

Just over a year ago I spotted another bout of flytipping in the entrance to the Friern Road Allotments. So I contacted the allotment members 44 | SE22 - February 2016

and asked if we could help them permanently block such flytipping by organising gates at the boundary – leaving no space for the fly tipping. I’m delighted to say these new gates were installed a couple of weeks ago. If you’ve not seen them enjoy the photo. Even better pop along (junction of Underhill with Friern Roads) and take a look for yourself. They look fabulous. If you know of any anti social problem where some lovely gates could help solve it please get in touch. Over the years we’ve organised lots of gates locally but these are the best so far and I’m sure we’ve not spotted every opportunity to design out crime and anti social behavior.

It was sad to see one of the locally remaining banks close in January. This leaves us Barclays Bank in the heart of Lordship Lane, Lloyds opposite Dulwich Library and the Post Office. If you need a local bank branch or are just annoyed that the HSBC Bank has left the area change banks. The bank switching service has made changing banks remarkably easier these days: www.simplerworld. co.uk which comes with a better guarantee than for Direct Debits! Keeping local banks on our high street is critical to helping keep a successful high street.

New Cycling Parking

Observant residents may have spotted some new cycling parking – Bikehangars being installed. If you would like a Bikehangar and it would encourage you to cycle more often with more accessible bike parking outside or close to your home let me know. Southwark Council provides over ten thousand car garages and has now agreed via TfL funding to provide this type of cycle parking as well. “I have been advertising in SE22 and SE23 magazines for over 8 years and find it not only a great read, but also a really useful tool for local marketing and a proven way of attracting local business. I can highly recommend Angela and SE magazines and I remain a loyal client!” Peter Bennison, P. M Bennison Heating Ltd ‘’As a relatively new business set-up, I have advertised in two editions of SE22; and as a result have received five new clients (four direct, and one referral). I’m very happy with this response, and Angela provides an excellent, efficient service, and couldnyt be more helpful! Many thanks.’’ Lynne Walsh, Flourish Gardening “I recently had double glazed windows fitted in my bedroom, a job very well done in every way by Bespoke Windows. They look pleasing and work very well. I found this company in SE22 Magazine, a useful and informative local monthly publication.” Dotty Todd “SE21 and SE22 magazines have been great for us in connecting with the local community and attracting people to our events. More importantly our ads have brought forward volunteers who are interested in becoming befriender, group helper or driver – roles we need to fill more and more to help alleviate isolation and loneliness in older people of Southwark. Thank you SEMags for all your support – keep up the good work!” Jennie Linnett, Dulwich Helpline & Southwark Churches Care.

Garden Talk

Ivy, a Love and Hate Story

I

n ancient Britain, Ivy was a symbol of eternity and endurance. In the 18th century it was regarded as the classic Gothic plant, clothing buildings in melancholy fashion to remind us that nature is never far from reclaiming power. Nowadays Ivy still provokes fear and tends to get a very bad press. Not all the accusations are founded though and the benefits of ivy I find are widely underrated so I’d like to try and set the record straight.

The Positives First of all, Ivy is an invaluable source of nectar for many insects, including bees and butterflies. They also provide shelter and food for small birds (their berries are high in protein) and for hibernating animals. Researchers found that honey bees rely upon ivy for the majority of the pollen and nectar they collect during the autumn months, a crucial time when the insects are trying to build up stores for the winter and feed their young. By studying the pollen being brought back to the hives by bees they found that 89 per cent of it was being collected from ivy. “Part of the problem is that people really don’t see ivy as a flowering plant because the flowers are small, mainly green and not very exciting. But we found that the nectar produced by ivy is very high quality, so our message is for gardeners to see ivy as something positive.” says Professor Ratniek. Message received Professor. Secondly, it creates an attractive evergreen carpet or wall, perfect to cover an insightly wall, create a green backdrop or add character to a house façade. There aren’t many evergreen climbers, let alone self clinging ones so Ivy is definitely a very useful plant.

The Negatives Trees canopies can become infested with too much ivy, which often happens in open-crowned trees such as ash. Ivy can act as a sail in high winds or add weight to an old tree canopy, making it unstable. Its 46 | SE22 - February 2016

heavy dense foliage can also hide cavities or decay. In these cases, it may be necessary to thin the ivy. Mostly, however, it's not a problem; trees have been supporting ivy for far longer than we have taken issue with it. It does need to be kept in check because it can get into drains and gutters.

The Myths Myth 1: Ivy strangles trees. Ivy doesn’t strangle trees. It doesn’t live off them either since, despite what a lot of people might think, ivy is not a parasitic plant. Those aerial rootlets merely support the plant; its ground roots do the feeding and watering. If the ivy appears to be growing into the trunk, this is often because it is exploiting the rotting trunk of a dead or old tree. Myth 2: Ivy damages walls It damages walls. In fact, though ivy does cling by aerial roots, it can do little harm on a sound, wellpointed wall. The risk is that on old, soft-mortared walls ivy can open up cracks which then let in water. This can then freeze and loosen the mortar. So fear not, and give Ivy the love it deserves. Barbara Samitier - Garden Designer www.barbarasamitiergardens.co.uk

The Last Word – Alice Solantania

M

y name is Alice Solantania Saga and I am a Fine Art Photographer. I have just started a new company, The Faerie Tales of Violette. I love angels, faeries & magic story telling.

How long have you lived in the area? Seven years in April! East Dulwich is wonderful.

What brought you here? I am Swedish and moved to New York to go to college and ended up staying there for 8 years. I worked for The New York Times Magazine in their fashion department under Amy Spindler and later Stefano Tonchi before heading home to Stockholm to start freelancing as a fashion stylist. London seemed like a wonderful next step!

What do you most value about the street you live in? I live in The Gardens and I love it being so peaceful and quiet, plus full of cute cats!

Coffee or tea? Where? I love the rooibos orange & grapefruit tea and the team at ToastED (who also create delicious soy lattes!).

Cafe, pub or bar? None. My house because it holds all my inspirations and treasures.

The book I’m reading at the moment..

I am addicted to Dulwich Woods!

MANY! here are a few: I love "Games Of Thrones", such adventures and such wonderful characters! A book that has helped me with my artist statement and the vision for "The Faerie Tales of Violette" is the “Start With Why” book by Simon Sinek. For health, a book that has helped me is "Grain Brain" by David Perlmutter. I have too devoured the diaries by/of Anaïs Nin lately.

What is your favourite shop?

My secret ambition..

Your favourite place to go for a drink? I love Franklins! I even used to call it my second home. Rod, the owner, is wonderful!

Where’s your favourite place to walk?

It used to be the antique shop off North Cross Road but sadly that one has closed. I have found wonderful treasures in St. Christopher’s Hospice charity shop!!!

And the last thing you bought there? Some porcelain dolls and art books.

If money was no object.. I would invest in learning plus better equipment in order to create more beautiful things. Probably more travelling. A dream is to give 50% of it away to various charities, for example 'pencils of promise'. 48 | SE22 - February 2016

A house full of treasures with a beautiful wild garden outside. To be an constant learner. An art studio where I am creating, creating, creating. A world of Beatrice Potter full of magic every single second of my life. To give value to all the ones whom share our beliefs of The Faerie Tales of Violette. To be able to help the less fortunate through my art. Someone special to share it all with. www.faerietalesofviolette.com http://alicewonderland2.blogspot.com
