Welcome This is by far the hardest leader I have had to write in almost 12 years. Just before going to print last month, I found out that my dear friend Lawrence Roullier White had died in an accident. This came as a huge shock to me and all those who knew him. I am sure that many readers will know Lawrence, as he was always out and about in the area, not only checking out the local shops for his popular Shopping page but as the owner of Roullier White. Lawrence first starting contributing to the magazines in 2008 with his fabulous Hectic Host column. He later added the Shopping Page which has because hugely popular. As my tribute to Lawrence I have picked out my favourite Hectic Host column from January 2009 and have reprinted it on page 12. I also felt it would be fitting to re-run his interview which first appeared last year on page 13. I know that many people will miss Lawrence; his family, partner Michael and his many dear friends in the area and around the World. RIP. Last month saw the amazing Stella Parton perform at The Palmerston one chilly Sunday evening. I managed to catch up with Stella ahead of the event and chatted about her long career and, of course, talked about her sister Dolly, see page 30 for more. See you next month!

Parton Comes to East Dulwich

here are some things in life that you don’t expect and having an international country singer perform in East Dulwich is one of them! I met Stella Parton a few days before her sell-out evening at The Palmerston. The event was billed as An Evening of Home Style Southern Tennessee cooking, with Stella’s recipes and cooking with James Donnelly, Head Chef at The Palmerston. The event sold out within 24 hours! One of the reasons for the special event at The Palmerston was to combine Stella’s love of music with her love to cook. “I have always loved cooking; I have been cooking since I was 7 or 8 years old. Coming from a big family, the girls cook and as I was small I couldn’t work in the fields, so I developed a passion for cooking and nurturing family members and loved ones. I am a cook, that’s what I do. I am not a chef, chefs work to please customers, cooks cook to please family and loved ones.” Stella was visiting London to promote the album which honours her iconic sister Dolly Parton. Mountain Songbird: A Sister’s Tribute’, is an album of re-recorded songs previously made famous by Dolly which also includes a new duet Dolly and Stella co-wrote together, titled “More Power to Ya.” The album is out now via Man in the Moon Records. I asked Stella, why had she decided to do the album now. “I have always loved my sister’s music and I never wanted to be identified as just someone who just went out there and sang her songs because I have always been a songwriter myself and a singer and I have always had my own band. I refused to be a request artist. I didn’t want people to think I was riding on her coat tails. I went the long way around and then I had people assume that I didn’t love my sister or she didn’t love me, which was never the case. I have always loved her so much and respected her so much that I would never have done it that way. I wanted her to have her own autonomy and for me to have my own and to respect myself enough to do that. When you go a

life and a career, by the time you get down this far and in life, you reassess things and I have always wanted to record some of those songs. So it just seemed to be the right time. I have worked on it for 10 years, recording one song here and one song there. And then it all came together after I wrote Mountain Songbird.” The album is out now.

nd… exhale. January is over for another year and with the arrival of February comes the promise of spring, lighter days and the return of booze! This was my first year doing Dry January and I plan to celebrate 31days of being alcohol free at my monthly Wine Club. Originally called ‘Book Club’ we rebranded when we realised the only thing on our intended reading list was a wine menu. We worked our way from Languedoc to La Rioja to Marlborough to Bordeaux and when we found ourselves in the Loire Valley, we got a taste for the Muscadet and stuck around. We try to mix the venue up a bit, but this month we will be at The Lordship, who serve a very nice Viognier. While I hibernated for much of January, Angela was one of the lucky few to get tickets to an up close and personal evening with Stella Parton at The Palmerston. Guests enjoyed a sumptuous feast of Home Style American food, served the way it is in the Smokey Mountains from recipes that Stella cooked with her mama and sister, Dolly, for many years. You can read Angela’s interview with Stella over on page 30. There’s plenty to tempt you out from under your duvet this month. Anyone born before the 80s will love Club Local at EDT on 3rd February. DJs will be throwing you back to the days of MTV, the King of Pop, Madonna, Womack & Womack, Soft Cell, Snap!, Lionel Ritchie and all those one hit wonders of the decade. There will also be a tribute to George Michael * sobs * However, if you are looking for something a little less energetic, Dulwich Picture Gallery will present the first photography display bringing together work by the British modern artist, Vanessa Bell and the American musician, writer and artist, Patti Smith on 8th February. The Robot Zoo at the Horniman opens just in time for half-term. Where else can you expect to

meet a robotic rhino, a squid with 18-foot tentacles and a huge housefly with a vacuum cleaner for a mouth? Meanwhile up on One Tree Hill, The Southwark Sinfonietta, an orchestra composed of local musicians, will give a concert at St Augustine’s Church on 19th. There are also plenty of networking opportunities for local businesses this month. Cooking with Scissors is held on the last Wednesday of the month and is a great way for likeminded professionals to meet, make new contacts and gain new business. Lawrence Roullier White - The Hectic Host

Get Your House in Order

o matter how much you have enjoyed Christmas, everybody breathes a slight sigh of relief as the last guest leaves on New Year’s Day; as you reclaim your house and your sofa. Having house guests can be stressful, the key is being prepared and January is a good time to get organised. I long ago dispensed with different sets of bedding; we use all white Egyptian cotton from the store, so it doesn’t matter if I muddle up pillowcases and sheets etc from different beds. This is a wonderful trick that you can also apply Men’s socks. Send all your various patterned socks to be recycled and purchase new, plain ones. Grey will go with business suits and brown with jeans; pairing socks will become a thing of the past. But back to the beds, if you do have different sets then as you strip each bed place all the linen from that bed in a pillowcase and throw the whole thing in the machine. Wait for a dry windy, day so you can peg them out thereby saving money and time ironing, fold them all up back into the pillowcase and stow away in the airing cupboard; each set contained. Again with towels we don’t have sets that we need to match, just white and black. In the guest bathrooms I leave a pile of baskets of towels; when the top basket is used, its contents get washed and it is returned to the bottom of the pile. When spring cleaning rooms for guests remember these simple tips; take everything thing you are going to need to clean the room in with you and close the door behind you and do not leave until it is done. You will only tread dust everywhere. With a very damp cloth wipe along the top of all the very high surfaces, wardrobes, bookcase, picture rails, door and window frames. Thus allowing the dust to settle to be hovered up; the last thing you do. Then clean the windows so you can properly see what you are doing. The best way to get glass clean is with a mixture of vinegar and water applied with a clean cloth and polished off with scrunched up newspaper.

London hard water results in lime scale a problem for all of us, our old friend vinegar will ensure that guests are greeted by a gleaming bathroom use it regularly on all taps and metal fittings to keep build up at bay. My particular bête noire is the indents that are left in carpets after you have moved furniture around to accommodate sofa beds etc. Simply take an ice cube from the freezer, place it in the dent and as it melts the pile will return to the carpet. Where are you to be found on Saturday?

The stalls on North Cross Road are a favourite of mine and I love exploring Peckham where there is always something exciting and ingenious happening.

What is your favourite place to eat?

We are so spoiled for choice but I love Sunday lunches in the House of Tippler – Tim does the best Martinis – and Pedler is a passion of mine. I love trying new ones though and cannot wait to check out The Habit in Nunhead.

The best kept secret...

The mausoleum in Dulwich Picture Gallery is a nook that no one seems to know about. Sometimes the main gallery can be heaving and hidden away, just feet from the visitors, is this little sanctuary of calm.

Where’s your favourite place to walk?

I walk everywhere, I love walking over One Tree Hill to Honor Oak and up to Horniman’s for the amazing view from the bandstand.

When I want to relax... In December 2015 Lawrence Roullier White celebrated a 10 years of his lifestyle store on Lordship Lane. Which may seem a longtime to some, but not when you know his traceable family have lived in Peckham and East Dulwich since the 1780’s.

How long have you lived in the area?

I have lived here all my life. I was born in Camberwell where my parents rented, they bought their first home in East Dulwich.

What has changed most during that time?

In the warmer months I walk to Brockwell Park for an early morning swim at the Lido. I do yoga at Yogarise in the Bussey Building.

What is your favourite shop?

I love them all, we are so lucky with all our independent shops, I do love a bookshop though and I pass Rye Books every morning on my way to work, I say hello to Alastair and Bert the dog.

And the last thing you bought there?

A signed company of the Lady in the Van – I gave to my friend who is an Alan Bennett fanatic.

The area just keeps getting better and better, I think the shops and bars and restaurants are now amongst the best in London.

Best bargain you’ve ever landed..

What do you most value about the area/street you live in?

My perfect holiday..

I am so lucky to have a house on the Peckham side of Peckham Rye looking over the Common. I am so privileged to have that as my view.

Not bought locally, but Lola, our British Blue, has been 12 years of fun, well worth the price tag. I would love to have a week with no work to do and spend it properly discovering this area – I always seem to be rushing somewhere or other so a week off at home with absolutely nothing to do would be lovely.

The most famous person you’ve met?

We get many, many really lovely and charming ones in the shop and I have met a lot. Probably the most star struck I have been, however, was when Leslie Caron bought her Christmas presents on the first

So, for all you romantic souls out there who want to prepare a perfect dish for their loved one(s), and those who simply find winter hard to survive and need a good, hearty meal to make things just a teensy bit easier, here is a classic Coq au vin recipe. This wonderful French dish hardly needs an introduction. It is made from chicken braised with wine, lardons, mushrooms, and optionally garlic. Our version ensures a rich, deep flavour that is perfect for a cold winters evening. Enjoy!

Coq Au Vin • 3 Rashers dry cured bacon with the fat trimmed and chopped • 12 small shallots, peeled • 2 chicken leg, skin removed • 4 chicken thighs with bone, skin removed • 2 chicken breast, skin removed • 3 garlic clove finely chopped • 800ml red wine • 150ml chicken stock • 3 Boquet Garni • small handful chopped flat-leaf parsley • 250g chestnut mushrooms • 2 tbsp cornflower • 1 ∞ tsp water

Method 1) Heat 1 tbsp of the oil in a large, heavy-based saucepan. Tip in the bacon and fry until crisp. Remove and drain on kitchen paper. Add the shallots to the pan and fry, stirring or shaking the pan often, for 5-8 minutes until well browned all over. Remove and set aside with the bacon. 2) Pat the chicken pieces dry with kitchen paper. Pour the remaining oil into the pan, then fry half the chicken pieces, turning regularly, until well browned. Remove and repeat with the remaining chicken. Remove and set aside. 3) Scatter in the garlic and fry briefly, then, with the heat medium-high, pour in 200ml of red wine, stirring the bottom of the pan to deglaze. The alcohol should sizzle and evaporate so there is not much left. 4) Return the chicken legs and thighs to the pan along with any juices, Stir in the rest of the wine, the 14 | SE22 - February 2017

stock, drop in the bouquet garni, season with pepper and a pinch of salt and return the bacon and shallots to the pan. Cover, lower the heat to a gentle simmer, add the chicken breasts and cook for 30 minutes. 5) Just before ready to serve heat the oil for the mushrooms in a large non-stick frying pan. Add the mushrooms and fry over a high heat for a few minutes until golden. Remove and keep warm. 6) Lift the chicken, shallots and bacon from the pan and transfer to a warmed serving dish. Remove the bouquet garni. To make the thickener, mix the cornflower and water in a bowl. Bring the wine mixture to a gentle boil then gradually drop in small pieces of the thickener, whisking each piece in using a wire whisk. Simmer for 1-2 minutes. Scatter the mushrooms over the chicken, and then pour over the wine sauce. Garnish with chopped parsley.

Intelligent Training Five tips to help you train more efficiently and effectively I’ve recently returned from a long weekend at La Manga Club in Spain where I was playing in a tennis academy for three days. The tennis was great, and the coaching even better. One of the key takeaways for me from the coaching was a simple principle: less can often be more. There are a few lessons from this experience which are worth sharing with you.

Sometimes less is more I’ve got some big events coming up this year; I’m running the London Marathon, and doing the Man versus Mountain (a 22-mile run up and down Snowdon), taking a few days off then heading up to Scotland for the Coast-to-Coast event which is a 105-mile race on foot, bike and kayak. I’ve been experimenting with different types of training for the marathon, which don’t rely on the relentless pounding of pavements. Lots of road running can often lead to injuries. There are other ways to train to build mental and physical endurance, and if you can run a successful marathon without running five times a week, your body will probably thank you for it. Consider how you can get the effects you want in the most efficient way possible.

Taper your intensity levels It is important to be able to adapt your training when you need to – and flexing the ratio of training to recovery time. For example, have some options in your back pocket for lighter training days. Maybe some yoga or a session with the foam roller might serve you better than a run or high intensity exercise session.

Remove the disruptors Avoiding disruptors such as excess sugar, alcohol, nicotine and prolonged stress will ensure you get the most out of your exercise sessions and optimise your healthspan. Having a good sleep routine, making time for fun and laughter, doing 16 | SE22 - February 2017

breath-work and getting out into nature and the countryside are also extremely powerful ways of looking after your body.

Vitamin D3 – the sunshine vitamin I always check my vitamin D3 levels in September and March so I know how much I should be supplementing with – I’ll usually take up to 500 IUs (international units) per day. A vitamin D3 test is relatively cheap and easy to do and you can also request one from your GP for no cost if you’ve got time to make an appointment.

Plan your holidays at the beginning of the year and protect that time It’s a good idea to plan your holidays in advance and then lock the dates into your diary before the year gets underway. It’s easy to find yourself firefighting from one month to the next and before you know it, you’re feeling burned out from lack of breaks. Dealing With Dyslexia

appily, there are many ways to support your child with dyslexia, say Louise van der Valk and Patricia Reed, Heads of Learning Support at Alleyn’s School and Alleyn’s Junior School Dyslexia is a learning difficulty that often runs in families, and which primarily affects the skills involved in accurate and fluent word reading and spelling. Nowadays, there are many strategies available to support children with the condition.

Liaise with your child’s school If you are concerned that your child may have dyslexia, your first port of call should be their class teacher, to discuss your concerns and receive their advice. They may well refer your child to the school’s SENCo (Special Educational Needs Coordinator or similar) to investigate further and to assess whether specific support may be required. Whilst intervention may begin in Reception for children who seem to struggle to acquire basic literacy and reading skills, a school also has to allow for the varying pace of the acquisition of literacy skills. This may mean that a formal diagnosis may not be immediately forthcoming; your child’s school should be able to tell you more about their processes and timelines. Once dyslexia is confirmed, a SENCO can provide ongoing support and access to dyslexia resources, and can advise on specialist services that may be helpful, such as extra help to improve a child’s phonological skills (how they break down words). A good school librarian will also be able to signpost age or reading level appropriate books.

Keep reading enjoyable and explore different tools Many dyslexia organisations, including those mentioned in this article, signpost reading resources. The Dyslexia Action site features the ‘Dive In’ guide which recommends specific titles by age group. Barrington Stokes (barringtonstoke. co.uk) is a specialist publisher which helpfully lists books by both actual age and reading age. To keep reading accessible and enjoyable, it may help your child to select books that have shorter chapters and larger text, but which are age20 | SE22 - February 2017

appropriate in terms of content. For instance, they may like to try non-fiction books about a topic or person(s) of interest to them. Reading rulers and coloured page overlays can have a very positive supportive effect (black and white can be ‘dazzling’ for some people with dyslexia). Using a device such as a Kindle can also be helpful, as they allow the reader to adjust text size and spacing, and to change the background colour. Audiobooks can also help to encourage enjoyment of a story, and children may like to follow the physical book while reading. Children with dyslexia may experience visual stress that can make reading even more difficult, so it is important to have regular sight tests undertaken by an experienced optometrist.

Support your child’s holistic well-being Enjoying activities together as a family, reading and talking will all help to improve a child’s vocabulary. Balance in life is important, so structure at home, set times for homework and plenty of rest will all contribute to well-being and the ability to manage dyslexia. Encourage your child’s particular abilities; this will help to build their confidence and selfesteem for all areas of life.

Silver Lining

particularly notice silvery foliage in the garden at this time of year. It shines out in the pale wintery light, lifting the garden. The shimmery grey tones provide an elegant accent colour, contrasting with dark, evergreen shrubs as well as rusty browns of dead seed heads and grasses. When there is more colour in the garden, silver goes beautifully with blues, purples, pinks and whites, but even splashes of hot oranges and yellows can look great against silvery grey. The other plus of most silver leaved plants is that they’re drought tolerant, so they tick the eco box too! Here are my favourite evergreen varieties for winter interest.

Small shrubs and sub shrubs Ballota pseudodictamnus. A pretty little subshrub, with woolly pale green to grey leaves – the sunnier the position, the paler the leaves go. Hard prune in June and it’ll regrow within weeks and have a neat framework throughout winter. Prefers sun and well-drained soil. Looks great with spires of dark blue salvia nemorosa ‘Caradonna.’ Convolvulus cneaorum A really useful and stylish evergreen shrub with shiny silvery foliage and white funnel shaped flowers from late spring to summer. Happiest in warm sunny conditions, in a border or container on a patio. Pretty with Erigeron karvinskianus. Lavandula angustifolia As well as those heavenly scented summer flowers, the winter structure provided by well-pruned lavender is a huge strength. This variety with its steely-grey woolly leaves is particularly good for winter foliage. Lovely for lining a path and giving definition. Best in full sun with well-drained soil. Santolina chamaecyparissus An excellent neat rounded subshrub with grey/white foliage and yellow button-like flowers in summer. Clip in spring to keep it neat. Best in a well-drained sunny site. Salvia officinalis (Sage) Handsome rounded grey/green leaves – pick these regularly for cooking, before the lilac blue flowers appear in summer and gently prune after flowering. Full sun or part shade. Lovely with other herbs such as rosemary, where its larger leaves provide a nice contrast.

Larger shrubs and subshrubs Brachyglottis ‘Sunshine’ (Dunedin Group) An easy to grow shrub with attractive silver/grey felty leaves and stems. It also has yellow daisylike flowers in the summer. It’s tough, unfussy and drought tolerant, and looks good with other Mediterranean plants and herbs. Pittosporum tenuifolium ‘Silver Queen’ This useful shrub has glossy grey-green leaves with white margins creating a pale shining effect. This is not as silvery as many of plants listed here but it’s useful if you’re looking for something bigger and it can tolerate partial shade.

Grasses and spikes Astelia chathamica ‘Silver Shadow’ I love this striking silver plant with lovely pale green/ silver spear shaped leaves. It creates an architectural focal point and whilst happy in sun it prefers partial shade as it doesn’t like to dry out. So it’s great for brightening up a shady area or balancing silvers on a south-facing border. It looks great with purple foliage plants, blues such as perovskia, bright pinks and grasses like Stipa tenuissima. Astelia nervosa is a slightly smaller variety with narrower leaves. Festuca glauca ‘Casblue’ A compact, mound-forming evergreen grass with steely blue foliage. This makes an effective edging plant en mass or is useful in containers. Happiest in full sun and pretty with silver, pink or purple plants and grasses such as the pinkish Pennisetum x advena ‘Rubrum’.

In The Top 5! D ulwich Hamlet continue to maintain their position in the top 5 of the Isthmian Premier league heading into February. Despite several teams below currently having a number of games in-hand, if the team continues its present run of good form we will certainly be challenging for promotion come the end of the season. On the cup front Dulwich are still competing in three cup competitions. In the FA Trophy, a welldeserved 4 -1 win away to National League South team Whitehawk saw the club through to the next round. Despite going one nil down in the first minute of the second half, a vociferous 200 plus traveling pink and blue army saw the team through to the last 16 securing a tie away to National League team Braintree on Saturday 4 February. In the London Senior Cup Dulwich are due to play a home tie against Barkingside on Tuesday 24 January. There is a lot of interest in this tie as a win would see us playing long-time local rivals Tooting and Mitcham United at home in the quarter finals, giving the club a chance of revenge for the semifinal defeat against the same opponents in this completion last season. Our final cup completion threw up an away fixture to AFC Hornchurch in the Isthmian league cup on Tuesday 31st January. At the last home league game before Christmas, nine and a half bikes, yes that’s correct half a bike, were donated by supporters to the local charity called the Bike Project who work with refugees to repair and donate bikes (http://thebikeproject. co.uk). If you were unable to attend the match and have a bike you wish to donate, please contact the Supporters Trust and we can make arrangements for the bike to reach the charity. The football club held a fund-raising football quiz night in the bar at Champion Hill on Wednesday 25 January in aid of taking the team to Hamburg in July 2018 for a special 125-year university celebration. The overall target is to raise around eight thousand pounds to fly out a full First Team squad to the

German city for a two-match pre-season tour, the highlight of this trip being a celebratory match against our very good friends from Altona 93, who were also founded in 1893. Can You? Dulwich CAN! Something is stirring in the London Borough of Southwark… Something unstoppable that will see communities unite around common causes and more residents becoming empowered to bring about social change. So what is this mysterious force, you ask? Well, over the last year Community Southwark, the borough’s support organisation for the Voluntary and Community Sector, has been developing seven Community Action Networks (CANs) in Southwark – including one right here in Dulwich.

What is a Community Action Network? There is a wealth of community activity going on in every part of the borough – but sometimes it is hard for people to find out what is on their doorstep or know how to get involved. In setting up the networks we want to provide people with tools, information and opportunities to be more active in their local communities.

So what have we been up to in your neck of the woods? Well, so far we’ve hosted three meetings in Dulwich and made connections with residents and local groups including the East Dulwich Community Centre, the Dulwich Society, Kingswood Community Shop and many more. Topics discussed have included volunteering opportunities and local activities for young people, increasingly high rents for shop keepers, and we will be undertaking a community asset mapping exercise with the Kingswood Community Network in the coming months. We want to hear about the issues that are affecting residents in Dulwich and, more importantly, help do something about them. This is where you come in! Second Chance For Taxpayers

he immortal words of Professor Andrew Greeley, “we’re given second chances every day of our life. We don’t usually take them, but they’re there for the taking.” These words must be echoing in the minds of all taxpayers who have failed to disclose untaxed income from second income sources. It’s not every day HMRC give taxpayers a second chance. However, in 2014, HMRC launched The Second Incomes Campaign, to allow noncompliant taxpayers to make full disclosure of income and bring their tax affairs up to date. In addition HMRC have on offer a favourable set of terms and penalties. However, once this campaign closes HMRC will not hesitate to exercise their fullest powers and penalties on taxpayers who have failed to take advantage of the campaign. Some taxpayers, with the catch me if you can syndrome often forget HMRC have significant investigative powers, access and use of multiple databases to pursue taxpayers. The consequences of receiving the contents of the infamous HMRC brown envelope may leave the catch me if you can taxpayer with much unplanned financial pain and disruption to their life. This campaign is not targeting the taxpayers who have fallen into the emerging private landlord class. This group have their own campaign. The Second Incomes Campaign is aimed at those taxpayers who are entrepreneurial and generate some money on the side. This is often cash income that does not find itself onto the taxpayers SelfAssessment Tax Return. Some of the following sources of secondary income include: web development; clubs/party dj; courier work; mini cab driving; direct sales; sports, health & fitness training; car boot sales; online sales. This list is not exhaustive therefore do not feel comforted by the fact that your activity is not listed. The campaign captures any activity operating on a commercial basis which generates a taxable profit. HMRC makes no reference to hobbies in the campaign literature. However, a profitable hobby will undoubtedly be included in the campaign.

Therefore taxpayers should not be operating under a cloud of false perception if their hobby is profitable. For example, it is not impossible to generate £25,000 sales revenue from online sales whilst engaged in full-time employment or £10,000 as a party dj. Fortunately, both of these taxpayers already had the foresight to register with HMRC and not wait until the spotlight fell upon them. If a taxpayer has any doubt the advice is to contact a professional adviser or HMRC Second Incomes Campaign helpline 0300 123 0945. The campaign does not offer immunity from prosecution. However, HMRC will acknowledge a taxpayers’ complete and unprompted disclosure in any decision to undertake criminal investigation. Access to the campaign is closed to any taxpayer that HMRC has already advised of its intention to open an enquiry or compliance check into their tax affairs. The HMRC deal under this campaign is most attractive for any taxpayer making a full disclosure and it is accepted. HMRC have legal powers to go back 20 years but innocent mistakes receive an immediate six-year cap. Penalties are limited to 20% of the unpaid tax due and payable. This contrasts with 100% penalties or more for failure to disclose or if HMRC contact taxpayers first. HMRC will even be open to negotiate a payment plan if a taxpayer cannot settle the liability in full. Once HMRC acknowledges and accepts a taxpayer onto the campaign, the taxpayer has 90 days from the acknowledge date to compute their liability and make payment to HMRC. Taxpayers with undisclosed second income should act today and reflect upon the words of Robyn Schneider, “second chances aren’t forever. Even miracles have an expiration date.”

Dire School Funding Cuts

he government is currently consulting about the funding formula for English and Welsh schools. Historically London schools received more per pupil to reflect the depths of local poverty. With time London has become wealthier. Rather than bring other areas funding up the government plans to reduce the amount per pupil our local schools receive by 2.8% in cash terms but also not increase school budgets in line with inflation and nationally negotiated staff wages over the next few years. This is calculated to in realterms further reduce school budgets by another 8.2%. To be a successful society we need to ensure the continued success of our schools. In 2003 the Lib Dem led council was given back control of local schools and since then under both Lib Dem and Labour led councils, local schools have made huge improvements and are all Good or Outstanding. These proposed cuts would hammer local schools and put that progress at risk. A 2.8% cut alone is around £60,000 less per primary schools. Hopefully this gives you an idea of how appalling these cuts will be if they proceed without even thinking about the further 8.2% cut. North Cross Road Market Expansion I’m hopeful local residents will have expressed support via the public consultation on expanding our local market https://consultations.southwark. gov.uk . The proposal we’ve put forward is for North Cross Road to be closed between Lordship Lane and Archdale Road on Saturday 8am-5pm. Currently with the road open vehicles whizz by behind the market stalls. Closing this section of the road will allow two rows of stalls and a wider selection of stalls. However, since the Berlin lorry attack it has highlighted that the new layout would need extra protection, with visitors walking on the road, from this threat and we are already working to take this into account. Please do respond to the consultation.

Double Yellow Lines Decision At the 1 February Dulwich Community Council (7pm Herne Hill Baptist Church, Half Moon Lane) we’ll be deciding our recommendations about the councils proposed rolling out of lots and lots of extra double yellow lines at junctions across the area. The Last Word – Lucy Cardell Lucy Cardell grew up in the Middle East and North London before moving South! She set up The Little Hero Company 2 years ago, inspired by her first son aspiring to be Superhero’s all the time, flying around the sitting room. So Superhero Training classes were born, running locally for kids aged 2 and a half to 6 years, plus doing parties based around any kids favourite Little Hero of the moment!!

How long have you lived in the area? Nine years. My husband introduced me to the area before we got married, as he grew up in Beckenham and went to Alleyns School.

What do you most value about the area you live in? I can walk out my front door and be in the hubbub of Lordship Lane bumping into friends and shopkeepers I have got to know over the years. It just all feels so easy!

What’s the one the thing you couldn’t do without? My own Little Hero’s… made up of hubbie and two cheeky little boys – they all keep me on my toes and keep at the end of the day keep everything in perspective, which is what it’s all about isn’t it…

Favourite place to eat? I Love Yama Momo… A little bit of the West End in East Dulwich. Beautiful Japanese food, great lighting, making it all feel special.

Where are you likely to be found on a Saturday? Quite often doing a Little Hero Party! So much fun and really enjoy giving the Birthday Little Hero an action packed special celebration. Non-stop fun and playful pretend - a magical combination guaranteed to make the kids eyes light up with excitement!

Best kept secret... Blue Brick Café for their fry up in particular, so tasty and the homemade baked beans are out of this world!

What is your favourite shop? Through the Trees, just off Lordship Lane on Zenoria Street, great to pop in for a fashion fix and a bit of retail therapy, always goes down a treat!

What was the last thing you bought there? A wine red knit jumper with subtle cut out shoulders, casual but with a fun twist, I will be back for the one in khaki!

The best meal I’ve ever eaten? On our honeymoon. We spent two weeks on a wonderful road trip through France and spent a few days in Baux de Provence. I’m a veggie, so it is sometimes hard to find original, exciting veggie food, especially in France!! We stayed in a fun place where our bedroom suite was carved out of an actual cave. When we went for dinner there was no vegetarian option, not a problem though, they just rustled up this meal which was so delicious! All fresh local produce… It was amazing!

Where’s your favourite place to walk? We do quite a lot of walking to run off the endless amounts of energy of boys, Dulwich Park and Peckham Rye are the staples but love Dulwich Woods for more of a scamp and adventure!

When I want to relax… To totally switch off, I make a pact with myself to do no chores, leave my phone in another room and have an email free few hours…. I like to go down to Northcross Road Market on a Saturday pick up some yummie bites, more food!! Come back, build a fire and curl up on the sofa with my little gang and watch a pre recorded episode of Planet Earth 2, we are all obsessed with it! And the boys sit still for an hour! Bliss!
