Welcome I absolutely love this time of year. Christmas (which I love!) is over and we have a wonderful New Year to look forward too. December was a fantastic month with so much on locally including the wonderful Christmas Cracker, which had East Dulwich really buzzing (see p37). The Dulwich Charity lunch which took place at The Palmerston in early December, raised a fabulous amount for our local charity Link Age Southwark. Find out how much we raised on p42. There are plenty of events on this month too, so make sure you take a good look through the news pages, starting on page 8. Most of us need a shot of caffeine first thing in the morning so Lawrence Roullier White volunteered to check out some of the best coffees in the area. We couldn’t cover them all in one page, so look out for a future feature later in the year. See page 28. The Dulwich Charity lunch raised a fabulous £2,500 for Link Age Southwark. The lunch, now in its 15th year, is held every December and is a fantastic way for local business men and women to meet up and get in to the festive spirit. This year the lunch was held at The Palmerston, who kindly closed the pub for the event. Over 64 local business men and women got together and had a great Christmas party. The organisers enjoyed great support from local businesses who donated prizes for the raffle and came along and enjoyed the day. CL ASSES now at Forest Hill Pools!

Let’s teach your baby to swim!

The first year of a baby’s life is one of the most important in terms of their long term development. It’s a time when their brain will grow more rapidly than at any other, and every movement your baby makes helps strengthen this growth. Swimming is one of the few things you can do at this young age, and it’s also one of the healthiest activities for you too! In water, babies are able to exercise every single muscle in their body - including some they would never even find on land. Sarah Ashton who runs Water Babies’ baby swimming classes in the South East London area, explains, “Whilst the emphasis in our sessions is very clearly on strengthening the bond you have with your baby, it’s also about having fun and increasing water confidence. Swimming from birth is also excellent for a baby’s development. Whilst being very gentle, it provides a complete physical workout, strengthening the heart, lungs and respiratory system which, in turn aids development of the brain. What’s more, regular

swimming can enhance baby awareness and improve eating and sleeping patterns as I was delighted to discover was the case with my own child!” Classes are kept small, and the fun relaxed atmosphere creates a sense of camaraderie within the group, with carers – and children – often socialising together afterwards. And don’t worry if you’re not a particularly strong swimmer – the water’s always shallow enough to stand up in, and rest assured you’ll never have to go underwater if you really don’t want to. We run classes in warm water and hydrotherapy pools in your area, so check out our website or contact us in the office to find your nearest one.

January News By Sarah Pylas

H

appy New Year from us all (two) at Around Dulwich! Traditionally a time to make good resolutions, many of us will have sworn off booze, biscuits and bad habits for the foreseeable future. Some of us may even see out the whole week before returning to our old, comfortable ways. This time last year, I rejoined Slimming World in a mince pie induced panic and following a big night-in on the Rioja with the editor of this very magazine, I had also vowed never to drink red wine again. I caved on the diet a month later – it’s crisps, I just can’t seem to resist crisps – but not a drop of red wine has passed my lips since. Unfortunately, an increased white wine and Prosecco intake has made up for this shortfall, especially over the silly season where glasses of fizz were being topped up like treat bags at Halloween #hiccups. The drinks were certainly flowing at the annual Dulwich Charity Lunch in aid of Link Age Southwark. The event was held at The Palmerston again and thanks to the generosity of local businesses, £2,500 was raised for this wonderful charity supporting over 500 isolated, older people living in Southwark. The East Dulwich Christmas Cracker attracted over 7,000 visitors to our high street. Festive fun included performances from local bands, choirs and theatre groups, competitions, a food market and special appearances from Father and Miss Christmas. The Lordship pub has been buzzing since it changed hands and provided the perfect festive backdrop for many Christmas drinks parties. The new menu features hearty homemade dishes and is reasonably priced. I can also highly recommend the Viognier. Meanwhile, mince pies and mojitos were on offer at the East Dulwich WI Christmas party at EDT. Anyway, back to January. The lights have come down, tree needles have dropped and recycling bins

runneth over with empty bottles. It is grey and cold and everyone is dry, or trying to be. I gave up making resolutions a few years ago and instead started to choose a theme to guide me through the year to come. 2016 was my year to ‘say no and let it go’, which had varying levels of success! I have not yet decided my theme for 2017 (at time of print), but at this moment ‘say no and put the crisps down’ is a serious contender. If you have resolved to exercise more in 2017 then it is worth mentioning that the weekly parkruns in Peckham Rye and Dulwich Park are free to enter and open to all standards of runners. Southwark residents are also able to swim and gym for free at Dulwich Leisure Centre. Visit www. everyoneactive.com/southwarkfreeswimandgym/ for terms and conditions. Wishing all our readers a peaceful and prosperous new year. As always, you can find details of all local news, events and ticket information over on our website. anuary may be the month when we would all like to cocoon ourselves away and drink cocoa under cashmere blankets - but life must go on. Like it or not we will have to cater the occasional event. Coming after a month when at every gathering everything that touches our lips seemed to come in rich buttery pastry (with which there is nothing wrong at all) a clean, quick buffet full of fresh ingredients makes a refreshing change. Here is our tried and tested menu of four dishes for a casual evening with friends. Mozzarella & Chargrilled Courgette – this dish takes the longest so we would suggest starting this whilst getting on with the others. The key to this to make sure the courgettes do not turn to mush or blacken too much, you want them sweetly caramelised in their own juices. The best solution – although it is slow – is a health grill using no oil. Cut courgettes in half, making sure you grill ones of the same thickness at the same time and top and tail so they fit. Get on with the other preparation whilst regularly checking and placing cooked courgettes to one side. Once you have a grilled sufficiency, and they have been allowed to cool, cut into bit size pieces, lay on a plate and cover with an equal amount of cut mozzarella. Dress with balsamic vinegar and olive oil. Le Puy Lentil, Beetroot, Pomegranate and Feta Salad – a simple and delicious dish. Simply cover your serving platter with a thickish layer of Le Puy lentils, layer on cubed, bit size pieces of cooked, chilled beetroot. Top with diced

12 | SE22 - January 2017

feta cheese and lots of pomegranate seeds and sprinkle with finely chopped parsley and mint. I drizzle this with a little honey and some pomegranate molasses that you can get from any store that sells southern Mediterranean produce. To cook Le Puy lentils, rinse them thoroughly in a sieve, place in a saucepan covered with water, bring to the boil and simmer gently for about 25 minutes. Drain and allow to cool before assembling this dish. Smoked Mackerel with Quinoa, Orange and Kale – possibly the quickest party dish ever. Simply layer quinoa on a platter, use a mixture of red and white. Take filets of peppered smoked mackerel, remove the silvery skin from the underside and flake over the grains. Take one or two seedless oranges – depending on the size of the dish you are making – and peel them. I do this over the plate so any juice of saved. Remove any pith and break into bite size pieces. Take a hand full of shredded kale and sprinkle over your dish. Dress with the juice of another orange. Grilled Halloumi with Rhubarb and Chili – grill halloumi until golden brown, stew rhubarb with a little brown sugar or honey, drain, removing excess liquid. Stir in dried chili and allow to cool. Allow guests to spoon onto cheese slices. Happy and healthy New Year!

Food & Drink with Suzanne James

Happy New Year! I know this can be the season of dark nights, empty pockets and the dreaded post Christmas diet, but don’t despair. Spring is only around the corner, and in the meantime I have a lovely receipe for roast carrot humous which I just had to share! This is a great snack or starter, served with crudités or warm flatbreads, or spooned into toasted pittas with salad and/or some shredded cold meat. Whenever I do a roast I allow for extra carrots so I can make this, but you can use whatever leftover roast roots are around, and if you have some roast onions or garlic, chuck those in too. Enjoy it alone, or get some frineds round to share – good food, good company & laughter are the best antidote I know to the January blues! Sign up to our newsletter for more seasonal tips and news at www.suzannejames.co.uk/newsletter.asp

Roast Carrot Hummous Serves 2-4 Ingredients • 400g tin chickpeas, drained and rinsed • 100–300g roast carrots (but can mix in other roast roots, such as parsnips, celeriac and perhaps some roast onion • Juice of 1 small lemon • 2 tablespoons tahini or thick natural wholemilk yoghurt • 2 tablespoons olive or rapeseed oil, plus extra to finish • 1–2 garlic cloves, finely chopped • ∞ teaspoon cumin seeds, bashed, or a good pinch of ground cumin, plus extra to finish (optional) • Good pinch of dried chilli flakes, plus extra to finish (optional) • Salt and freshly ground black pepper

2) Season to taste with salt and pepper. To serve, spoon the hummus into a bowl or onto a plate, sprinkle with a good pinch of crushed cumin seeds and chilli flakes, if you like, and trickle on some olive or rapeseed oil. 3) Sealed in a container, this hummus keeps well in the fridge for up to a week.

Tips and swaps You can use leftover home-cooked chickpeas here if you like: 250g cooked peas is roughly equivalent to what you get in a 400g tin. If you don’t have any chickpeas, cannellini or butter beans work well too

Food in Season Vegetables - Jerusalem Artichokes, Beetroot, Broccoli, Brussels Sprouts, Cabbage, Carrots, Cauliflower, Celeriac, Celery, Chicory, Garlic, Kale, Leeks, Mushrooms, Onions, Parsnips, Potatoes, Pumpkin, Red Cabbage, Shallots, Spinach, Swede, Turnips. Fruit & Nuts - Apples, Pears (late – Concorde, Doyenne du Comice, Conference and Winter Nellis), Rhubarb (forced), Walnuts Meat - Duck (end of season), Guinea Fowl, Hare, Partridge, Venison Fish & Seafood - Brill, Clams, Cockles, Haddock, Halibut, Hake, John Dory, Lemon Sole, Salmon (coming into season), Monkfish, Mussels, Oyster, Plaice, Turbot

Method 1) In a food processor, whiz the chickpeas, carrots, lemon juice, tahini or yoghurt, oil, garlic, cumin and chilli flakes together until fairly smooth. If it’s too thick, thin with some hot water until you get the consistency you like. 14 | SE22 - January 2017

Fitness Tips

Why is vitamin D important? An overview on the ‘sunshine vitamin’ and how to ensure you’re getting enough What is vitamin D? Firstly, for clarity, I’m talking specifically about vitamin D3 - the ‘sunshine vitamin’, a fat soluble vitamin, which needs to be consumed with fats in order to be absorbed. The body actually converts the vitamin into a hormone.

How is it consumed or activated? Vitamin D3 can be consumed in one of three ways: in supplement form; consumed in foods, although it’s almost impossible to consume enough D3 in foods; synthesised by the sun’s rays. We recommend supplementing in the winter months, and then getting what you need from sunlight in the summer months.

Why is it important? Vitamin D3 helps to promote calcium absorption in the gut, and is vital for both bone growth and remodelling. It also helps to prevent osteoporosis when used alongside calcium. Vitamin D3 helps with cell modulation and growth, and contributes to good neuromuscular and immune system functioning.

of vitamin D3 has also be linked to cancer, asthma, type II diabetes, high blood pressure, depression, Alzheimer’s Disease, Multiple Sclerosis, Crohns Disease and type I diabetes.

Who is at risk of low vitamin D3? Anyone who is indoors a lot, and rarely gets sunlight on their skin. You are more at risk if you’re older, pregnant or obese. If your skin is black, you are also more at risk because pigmentation in your skin prevents the sunlight from getting through as effectively.

How do I know how much I need to supplement? There are now DNA tests which amongst other things will tell you what your requirement is for vitamin D3. I spend a lot of time outdoors all year round, yet even after summer my levels were only adequate. I take a supplement (I use Cytoplan), and as my DNA results tell me I have a raised requirement for D3, I take 5000 IUs per day in winter and 2500 in summer. Don’t follow my example though without checking your own levels first.

How do I know if I’m getting enough? There are several ways to take a Vitamin D3 test: • Request a test from your GP • Order a home kit (a simple finger-prick blood test, and results take about a week)

What are the symptoms of vitamin D3 deficiency? Rickets used to be a common condition amongst children (called osteomalacia in adults), but there were less than 700 reported cases from 2013-14 so it’s very rare. However, signs that you might be deficient include unexplained fatigue, aches and pains in your bones and frequent infections. A lack 16 | SE22 - January 2017

Pets Corner

Pets that hate to be alone

A

new year begins and most of us face a return to work, after a long break. For some pets, especially new pets, this can be a difficult time. Many of us have to spend significant periods away from home, either in the office or travelling to it. Unless trained for this, many pets, selectively developed to form strong bonds with us, react badly to being left alone for hours and separation anxiety is seen in a variety of species, especially in dogs and cats. Canine separation anxiety is better known but felines are also affected. Cats may be more solitary than dogs, but still suffer if they are left too much to their own devices- especially indoor cats. Inability to cope with separation may trigger a range of problem behaviours. Common complaints include soiling around the home where anxious pets leave deposits, often at thresholds, to ward off perceived threats. It is thought some pets selfsoothe by laying down scent and may urinate on owner shoes, clothing and beds as way to mingle pet and human odours. Far from being spiteful the pet is trying to cope with feelings of loss. Puddles of wee and/or diarrhoea are strong indicators the animal has moved from anxiety into a state of panic, some pets even vomit. Destructive behaviours are common and may indicate barrier frustration, where the animal tries to claw or dig its way out and/or back to its owner. Other animals discover that focussed application of jaws and claws to random bits of their owner’s home helps them cope with uncomfortable feelings of anxiety or boredom. Many owners return to shredded sofas, gnawed doors and walls, and one person I know arrived home to discover five bags of potting compost had been ripped open and distributed evenly around the kitchen and hall. Vocalising is another strong manifestation of separation anxiety. Repetitive barking and howling will antagonise neighbours and may even involve the authorities. Aggression can also be a factor. Some dogs learn to intimidate and even attack their owners to stop them leaving. Separation issues in cats mostly arise when instinctive needs are

20 | SE22 - January 2017

not being met and owner presence is associated with daily highlights like mealtimes. Indoor cats need enriched environments to cope and owners should make the extra effort to use special toys to play hunting games with their puss. Cat trees, observation shelves and puzzle feeders are also great ways to give your cat something interesting to do while alone. There is little doubt that some animals are more sensitive and anxious by nature; some may have been weaned too early. These are the kittens and pups that are heart meltingly cute and sweetnatured, the ones we cuddle all the time and allow to follow us around the home like small, furry shadows. Such animals are prone to becoming over attached to owners and, flattered by the attention, we unwittingly encourage over dependence. Instead, owners should encourage greater independence in young pets. Separation training must be approached systematically, with short periods of separation that are gradually increased, interspersed with structured play and exercise. Young pups and kittens should not be fussed constantly but learn to switch off and relax while the owner does other things - but always after a good play or training session. Eventually the young animal learns that the owner disappears but always returns. In early training, a timetable and consistency are of great value. Sudden, long separations may be the very thing that sparks anxiety in the first place. If you think your animal may already be suffering from a serious separation issue then don’t delay, contact an ABTC registered animal behaviourist and get advice.

Debate Cake draws on the popularity of cafe culture, merging everyday life with critical thinking to challenge the world around us. The debates show students that exciting ideas often happen in more informal settings, not just in the classroom or the university.

Known as ‘Debate Cake’, the new initiative was launched with a debate about how gender stereotypes affect the portrayal of women in children’s books. Children’s author Tamara MacFarlane led the discussion and used the debate to gain insight into how her characters come across to girls.

Harris Girls’ Academy East Dulwich is hosting a series of debates in a cafe environment to build confidence and promote research and debating skills.

Our next Debate Cake will be with artist Heather Agyepong, who is currently displaying her work at the academy’s ID Gallery. Heather will draw on her experience of growing up in Britain as a young black person to lead a discussion about self-esteem, race and belonging.

Self-esteem

“Debate Cake was brilliant at opening up conversations with students in a relaxed environment, allowing them the opportunity to give honest opinions rather than feeling pressure to give ‘right’ answers.” – Tamara MacFarlane, author

“Debate Cake was so fun! I usually get stomach aches at debates because I am nervous, but I didn’t get one.” – Student

Legacy: Photographs by Vanessa Bell and Patti Smith 8 February – 4 June 2017 thinking artists and thinkers. Charleston, Bell’s farmhouse on the Sussex Downs, where she lived with her life companion Duncan Grant, and the neighboring Monk’s House, home of Virginia and Leonard Woolf, both became sites of pilgrimage for Smith. The display will include a selection of Smith’s black and white photographs, the product of her residency at Charleston in 2003, which capture the lingering remnants of Bell’s life and chart Smith’s ongoing artistic response to the Bloomsbury group. Commenting on Charleston, Smith said: “Art was a part of everyday living. Their cups and saucers were designed by themselves, their utensils, the wallpaper, tapestries. When I first came here I found it just like home […] I felt a real longing to document this place in the same manner that I document my own home because it is very much how I live: books everywhere, things that seem

Dulwich Picture Gallery will present the first photography display bringing together work by the British modern artist, Vanessa Bell and the American musician, writer and artist, Patti Smith. ‘Legacy: Photographs by Vanessa Bell and Patti Smith’, which coincides with the Gallery’s major retrospective of Vanessa Bell’s work, will include 17 photographs by Smith and a selection of Bell’s photo albums, displayed publicly for the first time. It couples two artists both known for their pioneering creative drive and defiance of social mores, showcasing two different but compatible artistic visions. Smith has long been drawn to the work and lives of the Bloomsbury Group, finding inspiration and solace in the rural retreats of these forward 34 | SE22 - January 2017

very humble, very sacred, a simple wooden box, a shell, a paint tube – everything has significance.” On display with Smith’s photographs will be seven of Bell’s photograph albums, generously loaned from the Tate Archives, that were carefully compiled by Bell during her lifetime. Bell took pictures from her earliest days - some of the photographs date from her youth at St Ives, where her family spent their summers. Others depict her own young family, her husband Clive Bell and lover Duncan Grant, and the circle of leading intellectuals and artists that surrounded them. The selection also offers an insight into Bell’s working process, illuminating how she used the camera to inform her paintings and providing an intimate glimpse of the Bloomsbury members behind closed doors. “In our display, these photographs and their makers will be able to speak to each other across the years” says curator Sarah Milroy. “Bell and Smith are both free spirits that challenged the times they lived in, and epitomised the ideal of creative freedom. We look forward to their conversation.”

Financial Matters

New Horizons for baby boomers

I

t is not unusual to begin the new year with some grandiose plan for the next 365 days. However, as a member of that illustrious club “Baby Boomer” the word retirement is frequently being dropped into conversation. Baby Boomer’s club, those born between 1946 and 1964 may rejoice as we enter 2017 without the dread of retirement and a state of inactivity. Last year 89-year-old Joe Bartley, a non SE21/SE22 resident advertised he was seeking employment due to boredom of retirement. Baby boomers with aspirations beyond working in a Devon café, there is still hope. Surprisingly, we can extract an example from Hollywood. Robert De Niro, who starred in the 2015 film, The Intern, highlighted the benefits a baby boomer intern can add to a business. Furthermore, a recent report, On the State of the Public's Health, Baby Boomers: Fit for the Future stated, “The adults in this generation are rich in experience. They have lived through tremendous change. They have also lived through enormous technological advances.” Three baby boomers shared their exciting new horizons that is open to others in 2017: Business Start-up; Voluntary work; Return to education. Research has shown that almost 1:5 baby boomers are increasingly exchanging their retirement to launch their own businesses. Reasons given for this resurgence include an opportunity to realise their dream; doing something they enjoy whilst good health prevails and maintenance of mental agility. Launching a new business venture requires careful thought planning and in most cases financial consideration. It is an activity that carries a serious health warning. This should not be undertaken by the exhausted or work worn baby boomer. Moreover, before embarking along this road, careful planning and professional advice is advisable. The potential financial rewards from a business venture will have a material impact upon the income tax position and income tax payable of a baby boomer. Daphne Gold, a former nurse said, “managing my three let properties is a helpful distraction from my grandma duties and volunteer life. I’m busier

40 | SE22 - January 2017

now than when employed in the NHS. I have an accountant to help me take care of all the financial and tax stuff” Voluntary work is a popular channel for baby boomers with their new time freedom. Many local/ community organisations and charities would welcome their wealth of expertise and experience. The financial implications of volunteering are negligible as most positions only remunerate out of pocket expenses. However, professional advice should always be sought. Volunteer positions on some professional bodies and government boards offer a daily or annual remuneration package. These positions will invariably have income tax implications. Meredith Baker a former Enterprise Centre Manager, has for the last five years developed a portfolio career. He combines his part-time job with life as a Magistrate plus sitting on at three boards/panels at periodic intervals with different remuneration packages. With a regular occupational pension and a part-time salary Meredith enjoys his new freedom. He is also well versed in the requirements of Self-Assessment. Finally, some baby boomers, like Gillian Delphy, return to the classroom. This can be for leisure, enjoyment or academic challenge. Gillian returned to university full-time to pursue a degree in Theology. University education can often cost a minimum of £9,000pa excluding books and living costs. Gillian funded her studies with a student loan plus her savings. The University of the Third Age (U3A) provides an opportunity for baby boomers to return to the classroom in a less stressful manner and less costly manner. U3A allows retired and semi-retired persons to undertake learning not for the academic outcome but for the joy of learning and exploration, in local areas. The U3A structure and courses provide an opportunity for the sharing of skills and life experiences. Course fees rarely exceed £100. I can highly recommend Angela and SE magazines and I remain a loyal client!” Peter Bennison, P. M Bennison Heating Ltd ‘’As a relatively new business set-up, I have advertised in two editions of SE22; and as a result have received five new clients (four direct, and one referral). I’m very happy with this response, and Angela provides an excellent, efficient service, and couldnyt be more helpful! Many thanks.’’ Lynne Walsh, Flourish Gardening “I recently had double glazed windows fitted in my bedroom, a job very well done in every way by Bespoke Windows. They look pleasing and work very well. I found this company in SE22 Magazine, a useful and informative local monthly publication.” Dotty Todd “SE21 and SE22 magazines have been great for us in connecting with the local community and attracting people to our events. SE22 Councillors

Parking Changes Proposed

S

outhwark Council has decided to tidy up its traffic management paperwork and seeks to install 7.5m of double yellow lines on all junctions across Southwark, starting in East Dulwich, that currently don’t have double yellow lines. Originally they proposed 10m. The Highway Code tells us not to park within 10m of a junction but it doesn’t flex this depending upon road speeds. The Highway code has to allow sightlines for up to 60mph our streets are 20mph and almost all proposed have average speed less than 20mph. When this was first raised at the Dulwich Community Council we were clear this blunt instrument wouldn’t be appropriate in East Dulwich. We were told officers would only proceed where we agreed after ward councillors reviewed the proposals in detail. Cllr Rosie Shimell and I met officers and gave that feedback verbally and in writing. We proposed 2-3m would give sufficient sightlines for the actual speeds on the roads proposed and give safe crossings for people walking. We also highlighted that in the last ten years no reported crashes had occurred at any of the junctions missing double yellow lines in East Dulwich where they were now being proposed. Our feedback has been ignored and council officials have issued a public consultation to blanket implement 7.5m. If you’re in favour or against approximately 1,050 metres of double yellow lines being installed locally please respond to this consultation at http://tinyurl.com/jfen5ut & email me your thoughts. We think this is completely over the top, will not make the area safer but will increase the chances of controlled parking happening sooner rather than later. Excuse the attempted pun but this is a one-way street – please do let the council know what you think.

Primary School Applications If your child were born between 1 September 2012 and 31 August 2013 then you need to apply for a primary school place for them starting school September 2017. The deadline for primary school applications is 15 January via an online system http://tinyurl.com/jhbwoxx. 44 | SE22 - January 2017

Development East Dulwich is increasingly seeing development and ensuring this happens with the community rather than against the community is proving really hard. We seem to be attracting developers who we’re finding at best dodgy. M&S developers ignoring planning laws, restrictions banning overnight building work were ignored and legal enforcement notices had to be issued against them. On Upland Road the developer Cosmur took over the highway and pavement. Council officials allowed this and Peckham Rye ward councillors where the development was happening hadn’t ensured planning conditions requiring a Construction Management Plan. After nearly two years and a great deal of casework I’ve finally managed to get the pavement released. I even had to suggest direct action would take place to liberate the pavement before it was released that same day back to the public.

Railings As local councillors we’re constantly trying to think how to improve our area despite many limitations and blockers (if you have a great idea for improving the area please get in touch). One idea we had was to smarten up the very southern end of Barry Road outside Barry House. Barry House is the refugee centre serving Gatwick and is the first place refugees really see of the UK before they’re dispersed across the UK. So we’ve used some of our devolved capital budget to make it more presentable funding new low level railings. Please see the picture just before the tidying up was completed. Our next step is to see if we can flood light the tower to make it a local feature – good idea?

Garden Talk

Take Cover! Great for banishing bare winter soil, marking out the front of a border and creating a lovely carpet under trees when planted in large drifts, ground cover plants are an important part of any garden. Here’s my top 10 evergreen varieties that are best for:

Shade 1) Asarum europaeum. With glossy green heart shaped leaves this easy going spreading plant makes a neat edging to a border, or is useful for mass underplanting in the shade. Simple and stylish. 2) Pachysandra terminalis. This is another lushlooking spreading evergreen ground cover that forms a dense mat of glossy green leaves. Tiny white flowers are a bonus in early summer. 3) Polystichum setiferum ‘Congestum’ is an evergreen dwarf fern with dense overlapping feathery fronds, useful for underplanting in a cool, but moist shady spot. Polypodium vulgare ‘Bifidomultifidum’ is another low growing fern that can handle sun so great if you’ve run out of shady spots. 4) Helleborus x hybridus Harvington lime. With bold dark green leaves and pretty white flowers from February to April this brightens up the garden in winter and makes a perfect ground cover for areas of dappled shade. 5) Pulmonaria ‘Blue Ensign’. I’ve come round to pulmonaria and particularly this variety with bright blue flowers in March to May and, unlike many, unspotted leaves. Great planted somewhere in partial shade, where the flowers can be clearly seen. It looks pretty with pale yellow primroses. 6) Brunnera macrophylla ‘Jack Frost’. With striking frosted leaves and dark green veins this useful plant lights up shady areas under trees or near pathways where you can see the sprays of forget-me-not-like blue flowers in Spring.

Sun 7) Stachys Byzantina. This velvety silver-leaved sunlover is great for softening the edge of a border and giving a bit of interest to a winter garden. It has spires of purple flowers in summer. 8) Thymus ‘Silver Posie’. A bushy creeping thyme with variegated grey green leaves, it’s lovely for

edging paths and growing up between stepping tones. The herby leaves will liven up your food too! Bees love the tiny white/purple flowers in spring and early summer, but cut back after flowering to keep the plant compact.

Sun or shade 9) Vinca minor. Evergreen with pretty pale blue flowers, from spring to autumn, this is a common but useful ground cover plant for sprawling down slopes. This variety is less invasive than Vinca major but cut back long shoots in spring. Happy in sun or partial shade. Hedera helix ‘Glacier’ a pretty variegated ivy that gives a similar effect, sprawling across bare soil, or down slopes. 10) Carex oshimensis Evergold. A golden yellow low growing grass which makes a striking edge to borders and is stunning in winter against red stems of cornus or underplanting dark green or purple leaved shrubs. For a bit more drama try Ophiopogon planiscapus ‘Nigrescens’, a low growing dark purple grass-like perennial that creates bold edge to borders when planted in a drift. Looks good with other grasses and contrasts well with silvery plants. Happy in full sun or partial shade. Happy new year folks! May 2017 be a lush and fruitful one! Barbara x

Cuong has worked in East Dulwich as a Dental Technologist for 22 years but has 26 years experience in the industry. He also lectures and presents on composite work in Harley Street to Post Graduates. CQC awarded Cuong to practice dentistry with onsite laboratory in May 2016. As a promotion on our Open Day on Saturday 21st January 2017 ONLY, we are offering 70% off a new set of upper and lower full dentures.

Where are you likely to be found on Saturday?

What brought you here?

The Brickhouse Bakery, it’s a great space for families and very convenient as it’s across the road from me.

The vibrant High Street with it's friendly people. There's a good sense of community here.

What has changed most during that time? More and more families moving here, it's evolved into what the locals call 'Nappy Valley'.

The one thing you couldn't do without? I could not live without the amazing choice of local independent shops and businesses on my doorstep.

Do you know your neighbours? The neighborhood is not the same without John Alan, who was my local florist. He lost the fight to cancer.

Describe your perfect weekend Walking through North Cross Road in the glorious sunshine, eating lots of different street foods on offer, trip to the Horniman museum or Peckham Rye park with my kids and trip to the cinema. 48 | SE22 - January 2017

Spent with family, either at Peckham Rye park or Dulwich Village for food and drink.

The most famous person you've met? Rosa Hoskins-Holt who is Bob Hoskins daughter, she is one of my patient cases.

Where is your favourite place to eat? The best meal I’ve ever had.. ...is my homemade crab and tiger prawn linguine. I have to use fresh ingredients from Moxtons, Cheeseblock and SMB.

The best kept secret….is LDentec, people don’t realise we have a dental surgery upstairs. We are a new dental surgery with a 22 year old established dental laboratory on-site.

When I want to relax…. I practice Wing Chun, a southern Chinese martial arts with my friends.

What is your favourite shop? St Christophers Hospice, I love a browse and a bargain. www.ldentec.co.uk
