It has been a fantastic month of sunshine, football (I love the World Cup!) and brilliant local events. As always SE22 is full of fabulous pages of local events, starting on page 8, with plenty to keep you busy this month. SE22 is the only place to find out what is happening in the area. If you are running an event in the area, please do e-mail details through for a free listing. We rely on all our lovely, local advertisers to be able to produce this magazine, so if you do give them a call or drop them an e-mail, please do say where you heard about them. The Last Word this month goes to local councillor, Charlie Smith, who recently completed his year as Mayor of Southwark, see p40.

Around Dulwich with Sarah Pylas July Round-up
I
thought the two perks of my husband being away in Russia for the World Cup would be 1. Not having to watch as much football on the telly and 2. Having the bed all to myself. I could not have been more wrong – on both counts! My 8-year old cheerfully informed me that we would not just be watching the England matches, but EVERY game. And, that he would be watching the evening games from the comfort of my bed, where he conveniently – but not very convincingly - falls asleep as soon as the final whistle blows! The cat has also decided he deserves a shot at being my bed companion, so between my son fidgeting and the cat meowing in my ear because he wants to be fed, petted, or merely make his presence known to me, I’m a bit over the World Cup already. With my resident babysitter away, my social life has been reduced to school hours only. The East Dulwich Picturehouse do a great deal on a Monday and members can see a film for only £5.50 (£7.50 for non-members). This month, I have seen Book Club and Ocean’s 8 and still made it back in time for school pick-up! There’s plenty of daytime fun to look forward to around Dulwich in July. School’s almost out for summer, so expect playgrounds from the Village to Forest Hill to be transformed into carnivals, beach scenes and dream holiday destinations. Fairlawn Primary School is holding a fiesta of colour (7 July) with real ale, cider, Prosecco & Pimms bar, live music, homemade hot & cold food, bouncy castles and lots of stalls. Down the hill, Goose Green Primary School is holding a summer carnival (7 July) including a Samba procession through the streets of ED.
Heber Primary School is having a Heber-besidethe-sea summer fair (15 July) with a children’s steel band performing on the bandstand and a sea-themed fancy dress parade. St. Augustine Church is hosting a charity concert (8 July) with all proceeds donated to the Russell Trust Food Bank. The Dulwich Outdoor Gallery has organised two guided street art walks (15 July and 12 August) with Amanda Greatorex. Learn how this project came about and all the information on the art and artists old and new. Tickets are £15. There’s much going on in the evenings too! Belair House is hosting a season of summer night film screenings. Food and a fully stocked bar will be available throughout the evening. The film for July is Murder on the Orient Express and in August, Grease is the word. Greece will be the word for me too in August, so I will miss the launch of the new Wild Child Festival in Dulwich (17-19 August). This is a new children’s festival designed by parents for 0-11 year-olds and with an emphasis on arts, creative play and circus skills! Now, please excuse me while I find out which game ‘we’ will be watching tonight... As always, details of all local news, events and ticket information can be found on our website and on Instagram @arounddulwich.

Garden Talk with Janine Winlaw
Fab Foliage
P
lants with variegated foliage have grown on me. Some are nicer than others - I generally prefer the ones with white/creamy coloured markings to the more yellow pigments. But just a few dotted around create bright golden or silvery accents, adding drama and contrast and lightening up shady corners.
blotches that are tinged pink in autumn. Mine looks pretty with a pale pink rose growing through it. Happy in sun or part shade.
Shrubs
Calamagrostis x acutiflora ‘Overdam’ Good for: Height and autumn/winter interest - An upright grass with cream-striped leaves and airy purplish flower sprays becoming pale brown in winter. Lovely! Carex ‘Ice Dance’ Good for: Evergreen groundcover - Tough and useful evergreen grass with shiny narrow evergreen leaves edged with creamy white margins. A smart plant for tough spots in sun or part shade. Hakonechloa macra ‘Alboaurea’ Good for: Underplanting and edging - This low growing grass has vividly striped yellow and green leaves and spills over pathways softening edges. It likes sun or part shade.
Pittosporum tenuifolium ‘Silver Queen’ Good for: Evergreen structure - This stylish shrub has small greyish green and cream leaves with contrasting black stems. It gets big but is easy to clip to shape – and the foliage is great for flower arranging. Likes sun or part shade. Cornus alba ‘Elegantissima’ Good for: Winter interest - Cornus (dogwoods) are grown for their red stems revealed in winter when the leaves fall, but this variety also has elegant pale green and white leaves that shimmer in the sun. It works best in full sun, planted somewhere visible during the winter. Daphne odora ‘Aureomarginata’ Good for: Scented winter flowers - This classy rounded shrub has glossy green leaves with fine golden margins and clusters of deliciously scented pink flowers in January. Tricky to get established but worth it. It prefers a sunny sheltered spot. Fatsia japonica ‘Spider’s Web’ Good for: Architectural leaves - This new Fatsia variety has the trademark handsome evergreen leaves but with a delicate sprinkling of pretty white markings. It looks lovely with white-flowers and adds light to areas of dappled shade, where it’s most happy. Weigela ‘Nana Variegata’ Good for: Spring flowers - I inherited one of these deciduous shrubs and have grown to love the light cream and olive green leaves, plus the mass of pale pink flowers in May. Prune after flowering and grow in sun or shade.
Climbers
Care
Herbaceous Perennials Iris pallida ‘Variegata’ Good for: Adding drama and structure - With boldly striped blue-green and white leaves leaves and lilac blue flowers, this is a showstopper! Likes a sunny well-drained border. Hosta ‘Francee’ Good for: Creating a lush feel - This smart hosta has large stylish green leaves with contrasting white margins and spikes of blue summer flowers. They need protection from slugs or grow in a large container in a shady area. Lovely with ferns.
Grasses
Trachelospermum jasminoides ‘Variegata ‘ (Star Jasmine) Best for: Lightening up a fence - A rarer form of the popular evergreen climber with the same fragrant white flowers in mid-summer . The glossy olives green leaves are splashed with creamy white 12 | SE22 - July 2018
They tend to need a bit more sun than nonvariegated variety, but this varies. If plants lose their variegation cut off the plain green leaves. Janine Winlaw - Writer & Gardener Follow me on instagram @janinewinlaw

Food & Drink with Suzanne James
Summer Pudding Loaf
Serves: 6 Prep Time: Overnight Cook Time: 10 minutes or less If you have been hard at work on your vegetable plot or allotment all year then this is the time when you feel the full benefit of your labour. Nothing feels better than loading up a basket with home grown fruit and vegetables, and, thanks to our new netting, there will be masses of fruit this year as the weather really has been perfect & we have succeeded in keeping the birds off. This success can of course lead to its own problems, as you can only use up, or freeze, so much fruit at a time, but this is a lovely recipe that should help if you have a ‘glut’ like we do!!
Ingredients • 1kg / 2lb 4oz mixed summer berries – we used blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, redcurrants all from the allotment! • 250g / 9oz caster sugar • 1 large unsliced white loaf or thick-sliced white bread (preferably slightly stale)
Method 1) Line one 450g / 1lb loaf tin with a double layer of cling film 2) Prepare the fruit by removing any leaves and stalks. Place the blueberries and redcurrants in a pan with the sugar and a couple of tablespoons of water and bring to the boil. Cook for 2-3 minutes, or until the berries have just softened and burst (don’t overcook). You don’t need to cook the strawberries, raspberries or blackberries so just add them to the pan at the end. 3) Using a sharp knife, cut the crusts off all sides of the loaf, then cut the loaf into medium-thick slices along the length of the bread, so that you have long slices rather than square slices.
4) Place one slice of bread in the base of the tin, trimming to fit. Place a slice of bread either side of the inside of the tin and cut slices to fit both ends of the tin. 5) Spoon a little juice from the cooked berries into the base to make sure that all the bread is well soaked in juice. Add the fruit gradually, making sure the bread soaks up all the juices and becomes red. When the tin is full of fruit, top with another slice of bread to seal it. 6) Spoon over a couple of tablespoons of juice from the berries that are left in the pan. You should have about half the amount of fruit leftover, which is lovely to serve alongside each slice. 7) Cover the pan with cling film and place the pudding in the fridge overnight. Place a weight, such as a can of baked beans, on top of the pudding to press the mixture down, this will ensure that the mixture soaks into the bread and the pudding is firm enough to cut. 8) To Turn out, peel back the cling film, then turn the pudding upside-down onto a plate and remove the cling film. Cut into slices and serve with the remaining berries and juice.

SE22 Health News
What is self-care? Practicing self-care is including activities in our lives, to take care of our mental, emotional, and physical health. Self-care does include the basic three; healthy diet, exercise and enough sleep, but there are other activities that we can do to make us feel good too.
Why is self-care important? We are all so busy with our lives; taking care of others, working, looking after personal admin, running a home and fitting in socializing too. It can be very easy to forget about our own mental, physical and spiritual wellbeing. Often we are the last on the list of our priorities. This fast pace can go on for only so long before we start to suffer in some way. Whether it’s mental or physical symptoms such as anxiety, stress or physical illness, I believe the mind and body are very connected and stress does cause physical imbalance, which can lead to illness. Self-care is especially important at times of excitement, stress or when we’re especially busy or are experiencing big changes in our lives. Unfortunately these are the times when we tend to forget to take care of ourselves properly and selfcare can go out of the picture totally!!
How can we include self-care into our lives? By making time regularly to do something that makes us feel good or that we enjoy, we are practicing self-care. Including some of the following activities in your life can really make a difference to your wellbeing; • Comedy/laughter- watching or reading something funny • Meditation • Yoga • Reading a novel or something inspiring • Music- listening to your favourite tunes can really enhance your mood • Watching something uplifting • Exercise • Fresh air- just going for a walk can help to clear your head • Spending time in nature 16 | SE22 - July 2018

Taking time to relax in the bath instead of shower Manicure/pedicure/facial or massage- treating yourself to some pampering Hobbies, learning something new or doing something you’re interested in or are passionate about Practicing gratitude- writing 5 things each day that your grateful for can really help you to appreciate yourself and your life.
It can take a bit of planning! Self care needs to be scheduled into your day/ week to ensure you get time to do it. I actually recommend, when you’ve decided what activities you want to do, to write them in your diary alongside all of your obligations. This way you are much more likely to be able to find the time for yourself. As well as the ‘basic three’ (healthy diet, exercise and sleep) a good guide is to do one thing that you enjoy everyday and one thing that is relaxing. I hope this will remind and inspire you to take a few minutes each day for yourself. This time investment is well worth it in the short and long term! Fitness tips with Leanne Spencer
What to do when your energy is low
W
e all have moments when we don’t feel as energised or inspired as we’d like, and we feel a little disconnected from everything. However, there are many things you can do when your energy is low. Here are my top five tips.
Move As human beings we were designed to move, but many of us simply don’t do enough of that any more. The best way to energise yourself is to move your body. Get all your joints moving. Walking is a fantastic way to do this, or you could use something like a kettle bell; I get up and do 10 kettle bell squats every hour and I might pump the kettle bell to work my biceps too. You can also use it for tricep extensions, there are many different ways to use it for movement. Having something around in the house or in your office to help you get the blood pumping is really good. Walking, standing up regularly if you’re sat down a lot during the day, stretching out the body and all the main muscle groups all help.
Drink Water Many of us walk around in a state of sub optimal hydration, but drinking a cold class of water, will immediately energise you. Remember to drink plenty of water throughout the day too. Herbal tea is also good, but try to avoid sugary drinks, which cause a quick increase and subsequent slump in

24 | SE22 - July 2018
blood sugar levels. Plus of course caffeine is an artificial stimulant, so, water or water based drinks are best.
Eat a Fat or Protein Based Snack You can get some reasonably good snack bars now that are protein based. Examples of foods that contain good fats for snacking include nuts, seeds and avocados. For protein, you could have some good quality chicken, eggs, almonds, cheese, yoghurt, chick peas or hummus. Vegetables complement a protein snack nicely as they contain carbohydrates.
Connect If you’re feeling under energised, connect with something that energises you. Is it a friend that you can phone? Maybe you read something motivational by your favourite author for example. Maybe you just connect with something you really love, so think about the weekend when you’re going to be doing that hike out in nature. That will give you a little spark of energy as well.
Take a Nap If you’ve got the option, take a nap if you’re not feeling very energised. Maybe you just don’t have enough sleep cycles under your belt for the day ahead. I appreciate napping isn’t possible for everyone, but even just closing your eyes for five, ten minutes, whether that’s a meditation, a quick relaxation, just trying to reinvigorate and re-inspire yourself can also be very effective. So, move, drink water, eat a fat or protein based snack, connect, and take a nap if you can, or a micro break. All fantastic ways to gain energy.

Financial Matters with David Frederick
Sun, sea, & safe travel money
H
oliday all booked, bags packed and you’re almost set to jet off for that planned break in the sun. Now it’s all about the money. Some of us just ensure our pockets have enough cash for the break and head out. Whereas some lovers of plastic, check they have their credit or debit card in their pockets and head out. Job done! Let’s explore the holiday options.
Cash Cash is the easiest mode of payment to hold. However, whether it is in sterling or the domestic currency, cash is the least safe option. This is exemplified if it is lost or stolen as there is the battle with the travel insurance company, assuming you did not forget the insurance! Insurance companies do not often insure travellers for walking around with loads of cash! Therefore let’s abandon the loads of cash or the not so loads of cash strategy.
Debit Cards Debit cards operate in the exact same manner abroad as at home. When using abroad it is advisable to pay in the local currency rather than sterling as you’ll tend to get a better exchange rate. Although it is a quick and convenient way to withdraw cash from the ATMs, there is often a fee for this flexibility. Therefore ATM use is not advisable. Otherwise debit cards affords you the same protection as when used at home.
Credit Cards They operate in the same way as at home and afford users the same protection if goods purchased are faulty. However, some cards have an additional fee when used to purchase items, therefore users are advised to check with the card issuer before going away.
Traveller’s Cheques Some of the younger travellers may never have heard about this as I recently found out whilst in discussion with some under 25 year olds! These are pre-printed cheques in fixed denominations and were popular in the pre-cashless economy. They are still accepted and as a mode of payment. They work in the same way as cheques. 28 | SE22 - July 2018
The purchase and use of traveller’s cheques usually has a commission charge attached to them so they are somewhat more expensive than raw cash or cards. They are also almost obsolete, hence why some travellers have never heard about them. As a security precaution, traveller’s cheques should always be signed as soon as they are received from the bank or travel bureau. Like an ordinary cheque, traveller’s cheques are then exchanged when purchasing goods or services. On use they will require countersigning and may require proof of identity. As a precaution users of traveller’s cheques should record the serial numbers of their traveller’s cheque in case they are lost or stolen. Unused traveller’s cheques can be held for later use or sold back to the provider.
Prepaid Cards These are the pay and go cards that are replacing the traditional traveller’s cheque. There is a plethora of prepaid card providers with a multitude of different practices. Travellers are advised to research the different card providers before making a choice to select the card that best meets their needs. Prepaid are a great budgeting tool as you cannot spend more than the amount on the card. However, prepaid card users should check the following features with card providers: 1) Is the card balance spendable in UK on return? 2) Administration fee if card not used within a set period? 3) Commission fee if ATM withdrawal or top-up? 4) Cost of replacing lost or stolen card? Prepaid cards are today’s safe cashless replacement for the traveller’s cheque and hence their growth in popularity. Enjoy your break without any cash headaches.

Education News from Alleyn's
Texts that Tempt Mandy Reid, Librarian at Alleyn’s Junior School tells us how to encourage a love of reading in our children. “Congratulations! Today is your day. You’re off to Great Places! You’re off and away!” (Oh, the Places You’ll Go by Dr Seuss) This promise captures perfectly the potential a story can offer a child; a journey that will fire the imagination and introduce weird and wonderful worlds. For many of us there can be no greater pleasure than sitting down with a good book, but we cannot assume our children feel the same way. Some may enjoy reading passionately but others may feel daunted; if we can get them off to a good start, reading can become a lifelong pleasure.
Finding Inspiration • Encourage children of any age to explore a wide range of books. Your local library is a great place to find a huge array of books. Your child might choose anything from a picture book or a quick read to a graphic novel or a classic. • Reluctant readers may find listening to audio books a relaxing way to access stories and they can come into their own on long car journeys. • Some children prefer information books to fiction and so non-fiction is a fabulous way for them to find out about the world - whatever they choose, it is all reading. • It is important a child makes their own choice of books; they will get pleasure from taking ownership of their reading.
Celebrating stories • Telling stories and reading out loud are practical ways to engage your child’s interest. Chatting with older children about what they are reading can also help draw out their enjoyment of and excitement about the material. • World Book Day is in March but the website is available all year and is full of podcasts, trailers and information about events. 30 | SE22 - July 2018
• Children’s author events are a great way to inspire children to read. Look out for them in your local bookshop. • Over the summer children can take part in the annual Summer Reading Challenge, at their local library. This year the theme is ‘Mischief Makers’ inspired by the Beano comic, which is 80 this year - a perfect recipe for a summer of reading fun.

Thursday 26 July The Bigger Picture Presents: The Big Sick @8pm Director: Michael Showalter USA 2017 | 120 minutes. | Cert: 15 Written by its (loosely-based) real life protagonists (Emily V. Gordon and Kumail Nanjiani) and starring one of them (Kumail Nanjiani), this tells of a fledgling Pakistani stand-up in America who has a relationship with a white woman who he meets through an audience heckle in Chicago. He does not tell his immigrant Muslim family, who wish him to have an arranged marriage. When he admits to Emily these pressures (and that he cannot see a permanent relationship evolving), she leaves him. However, she then falls very seriously ill (the Big Sick of the title), and Kumail finds himself working with (and frequently against) her parents to support her as her conditions worsens. We say: It’s a ‘Rom Com’ which is really romantic and really funny! www.thebiggerpic.co.uk. SE22 Councillors with James McAsh
Your New Local Councillors
H
i, I’m James McAsh: one of your new local councillors. As of May 3rd 2018 East Dulwich has been separated into two wards. Goose Green has three councillors, Victoria Olisa, Charlie Smith and myself, while Dulwich Hill has two, Maggie Browning and Jon Hartley. Your councillors represent you by raising issues on your behalf and by making sure that residents’ interests are prioritised in Southwark Council’s decision-making. Thank you to everyone who voted; it is an honour to represent such a vibrant community. And thank you, too, to Angela for inviting the five of us to continue the successful SE22 Councillors column. This month I want to highlight some of the issues raised with us on the campaign trail, and explain what we are doing about them. We want to hear your thoughts on them, and next month the Dulwich Hill councillors will do the same.
Parking Parking is getting more difficult in many areas in East Dulwich, particularly around the train station and near Lordship Lane, and the question of Controlled Parking Zones (CPZ) divides opinion. Some support them as a means of ensuring there is available parking near their home; others feel that they are unnecessary and costly. We three Goose Green councillors will only support the implementation of a CPZ if it has the support of the local residents. What do you think?
Safety on Lordship Lane Lordship Lane is getting busier and busier. This is welcome, but it also brings concerns about road safety. We are looking into what changes can be made to the road, particularly around junctions, to protect vulnerable road users: pedestrians and cyclists. What do you think?
Problems with rented housing There are many conscientious and responsible landlords, but sadly some fall short of expectations. Southwark’s licensing scheme covers shared houses and all rented properties on Lordship Lane between Bawdale Road and Goose Green, so that 38 | SE22 - July 2018
landlords must observe Council regulations on management, fire safety, amenities and space. We are looking into whether this should be extended to a wider area, with more information at: http://bit.ly/SwkPropertyLicensing. What do you think?
Get in touch Let us know what you think about these and any other concerns you have in the Goose Green area, or relating to Southwark Council. Goose Green residents can contact the three of us by email on: James.McAsh@southwark.gov.uk Victoria.Olisa@southwark.gov.uk Charlie.Smith@southwark.gov.uk. You can also visit us at one of our surgeries at 7pm on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of the month at East Dulwich Community Centre on Darrell Road. If you’re not sure if you live in Goose Green or Dulwich Hill you can find out here: http://bit.ly/SwkCouncillors
And finally ..... A big congratulation to Dulwich Hamlet Football Club on their promotion to the Vanarama National League South! Let’s hope that we can welcome them back home to Champion Hill very soon. James.McAsh@southwark.gov.uk http://bit.ly/SwkCouncillors

Onion, Chilli, Herb & Garlic Tree Its BBQ time, and we will all need onions, garlic chilli and herbs to flavour and scent our sizzling feasts…oh and quite possibly a brolly! Sit this unique tree in your kitchen to add colour and flavour to this month.
You will need… • A selection of small onions. I used red and brown. • Garlic • Chillies, I used red and green to add colour • Rosemary, bay and olive sprigs • A pot of choice • Kitchen foil • Marzipan Step 1 - Stuff your pot with foil.
Step2 - Mould your marzipan into a cone shape, creating a food safe base. Place onto your pot Step 3 - Using the toothpicks arrange your onions and garlic around the tree evenly. I used a chopping board to help plunge the toothpick into the harder onions and garlic. Step 4 - Now add the chillies Step 5 - Finish your tree with sprigs of herbs Place in your kitchen and fire up the BBQ, Happy sizzling! SE22 - July 2018 | 39
I
The Last Word – Councillor Charlie Smith
became Mayor of Southwark in May 2017 following a year as Deputy Mayor. I had hardly begun my term of office when we suffered that horrible terrorise attack on London Bridge. My role was to visit the First Responders and thank them for the courageous work they carried out and on subsequent days. I also visited the various hotels that put people up for the night following the attack. I thoroughly enjoyed my year.
How long have I lived in the area I am a Londoner and have lived in East Dulwich for about 25 years.
What brought you here It was mainly house prices but I soon discovered East Dulwich was that little bit more rural compared with say Brixton.
What has changed most during that time I guess it is the shops and stores that have gone to be replaced by many eateries and watering holes. Oh, and of course the rise in property prices.
What do you most value about your street There is a primary school on the corner and it is great to hear the kids coming and going twice a day.
What one thing would you change I would try to manage the commuter traffic to stick to the main roads rather than using the smaller roads as cut throughs twice a day clogging up the streets and polluting the atmosphere.
The one thing you couldn’t do without My wife Sue. We have been married 52 years. She is my rock.
Do you know your neighbours As the local Councillor for the area it has been important to know my neighbours to listen to their concerns.
The most famous person you met I have met a lot of senior politicians over the years, Margaret Thatcher being one. I think everyone in East Dulwich has bumped into James Nesbit at some time.
Do you belong to any groups I am member of the Vocal Chords choir. We meet and rehearse in Forest Hill. We have performed at the East Dulwich Christmas Cracker on a couple of occasions. I am also a member of the Labour Party. 40 | SE22 - July 2018
Describe your perfect weekend Seeing Chelsea win at home then a night in with a curry. Possibly some gardening on the Sunday if the weather is fine or visiting my grand children who live in Lewisham.
What is your favourite place to eat We are spoilt for choice in East Dulwich. I like Hisars in Lordship Lane or Lorenzo in Forest Hill Road.
Where are you to be found on Saturday Apart from Stamford Bridge I would probably have been out canvassing in the morning. There is also the weekly shop that had to be done.
Coffee or tea? Where? I am not a great coffee drinker as it keeps me awake at night. I might have a mug of tea at the Dulwich Cafe if I am down that way.
The best meal I have ever had It was with my wife in Samos in Greece overlooking the Aegean Sea.
Where’s your favourite place to walk I do like to take the dog to Peckham Rye park or up to Dulwich Woods.
My secret ambition I wouldn’t mind trying to fly a plane or if not that go on a balloon ride. charlie.smith@southwark.gov.uk
