Welcome to SE22 Despite the latest set back on Freedom day, I have been getting out and about much more and it feels good! The events are coming in thick and fast, so please do take a look at our events pages start on page 6. There are 7 and a half pages of online and in person events happening in and around Dulwich. So there is plenty to do right on our doorsteps. Starting this month at The Lordship Pub is a new type of networking meeting which I am running! I am now the local Entrepreneurs Circle Ambassador and I can’t wait to get the meetings up and running. See page 19 and 30 for more details. East Dulwich resident David, a supporter of the baby charity Tommy’s, is launching a campaign to raise awareness of those 1 in 4 pregnancies and help people realise they are not alone: that losing a child does not have to define you. David has set up Run in 4 and explains why and how you can get involved on page 22. The Last Word this month goes to Nichola Penman. Nichola is a local interior designer, working on many Dulwich homes over the last six years. She is passionate about creating spaces that feel as good to live in as they look, with the belief that how we live and design our homes, can provide a great source of happiness and contentment. Read the full article on page 36. Until next time.

Hydrangeas For High Summer Impact Garden Talk with Janine Winlaw | Instagram @janinewinlaw

H

ydrangeas are gorgeous shrubs – their large blousy heads create abundance and colour into late summer, often taking on pinky hues in autumn, with dried seed heads adding winter structure too. They can be broadly categorised into two species, including Asian (paniculata and macrophylla) that prefer acid soil, some shade and moisture. For sunnier spots, opt for an American species such as the popular North American H. arborescens ‘Annabelle’, which can handle full sun and less water. Hydrangeas come in a vast range of colours, sizes and forms – from the globular mopheads to lacecaps with flatter heads of flowers. Here are a few to consider.

arborescens ‘Invincible Spirit,’ and the paler pink ‘Sweet Annabelle’ with flowers that soften to a delicious paler pink as the flowers fully open.

Hydrangea Macrophylla

Hydrangea H. Quercifolia

If the standard pink and blue mopheads (pink in alkaline and blue in acidic soil), conjure up an old fashioned image, opt for classic white varieties such as the flamboyant H. macrophylla ‘Madame Emile Mouillere’ or H. macrophylla ‘Zebra’ which has striking black stems. Otherwise, go for dramatic colours such as H. macrophylla ‘Westfalen’ with its large rich purple mophead blooms. Lovely lacecaps include subtle grey blue and white H. macrophylla ‘Veitchii’, or richly coloured ‘Rotchwanz’ with deep pink to wine-colored starry flowers.

Hydrangea Paniculata Hydrangea paniculata have long conical shaped flowers and add colour later in the season. Loose in habit, H. paniculata ‘Vanille Fraise’ has large creamy white flower heads turning shades of pale pink as they age. ‘ Pinky Winky’ is a slightly darker pink variety pointier flower heads. For more drama H. paniculata ‘Wim’s Red’ has scented flowers that start white and end up a rich red and ‘Limelight’ is a popular hydrangea with heads of lime-green flower. For smaller gardens, H. paniculata ‘Little Lime’, is a compact version, while ‘Kyushu’ has conicles of white flowers and a neat upright habit.

Hydrangea arborescens Best loved is H. arborescens ‘Annabelle’ with huge globes of fresh lacy cream-coloured flowers. A new variety ‘Strong Annabelle’ has tougher stems. And now breeding has lead to varieties of H. arborescens in shades of pink including H. 12 | SE22 - July 2021

These are as much about the large lobed leaves that turn a dramatic pinky red, as flowers. ‘Snow Queen’ has large cones of white flowers and a spreading habit– perfect for woodland areas. ‘Snowflake’, has conical heads of delicate double white flowers in summer with fiery autumnal foliage colour.

Hydrangea Care Most hydrangeas like a sheltered position out of the wind, some shade and moisture – even H. arborescens such as‘Annabelle’. Add plenty of organic material such as garden compost, when planting - in the summer tip a bucket of water over the roots about once a week. Feed with a slowrelease fertiliser or sprinkle blood, fish and bone in spring and early summer. If leaves are yellowing, water with liquid seaweed. In spring cut back flowering stems to within a few buds of the woody framework, then mulch. Staking with a fluted plant support in early spring will avoid them flopping or bamboo canes tied gently to floppy steams will help keep plants upright.

Companions Dark dramatic purples and plums such as penstemon ‘Raven’ or Clematis ‘Black Prince’ contrast well with white hydrangea varieties. Or go for spire shaped perennials such as Veronicastrum virginicum ‘Album’, or perovskia ‘Blue Spire’. Underplant with Liriope muscari, Vinca minor or Geranium ‘Rozanne’.

Summer Pudding Loaf Recipes from Suzanne James | www.suzannejames.co.uk

I

f you have been hard at work on your vegetable plot or allotment all year then this is the time when you feel the full benefit of your labour. Nothing feels better than loading up a basket with home grown fruit and vegetables, and, thanks to our new netting, there will be masses of fruit this year as the weather really has been perfect & we have succeeded in keeping the birds off. This success can of course lead to its own problems, as you can only use up, or freeze, so much fruit at a time, but this is a lovely recipe that should help if you have a ‘glut’ like we do! Serves: 6 Prep Time: Overnight Cook Time: 10 minutes or less

Ingredients • 1kg / 2lb 4oz mixed summer berries – we used blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, redcurrants all from the allotment! • 250g / 9oz caster sugar • 1 large unsliced white loaf or thick-sliced white bread (preferably slightly stale)

Method 1) Line one 450g / 1lb loaf tin with a double layer of cling film 2) Prepare the fruit by removing any leaves and stalks. Place the blueberries and redcurrants in a pan with the sugar and a couple of tablespoons of water and bring to the boil. Cook for 2-3 minutes, or until the berries have just softened and burst (don’t overcook). You don’t need to cook the strawberries, raspberries or blackberries so just add them to the pan at the end. 3) Using a sharp knife, cut the crusts off all sides of the loaf, then cut the loaf into medium-thick slices along the length of the bread, so that you have long slices rather than square slices. 4) Place one slice of bread in the base of the tin, trimming to fit. Place a slice of bread either side of the inside of the tin and cut slices to fit both ends of the tin. 5) Spoon a little juice from the cooked berries into the base to make sure that all the bread is well soaked in juice. Add the fruit gradually, making 14 | SE22 - July 2021

sure the bread soaks up all the juices and becomes red. When the tin is full of fruit, top with another slice of bread to seal it. 6) Spoon over a couple of tablespoons of juice from the berries that are left in the pan. You should have about half the amount of fruit leftover, which is lovely to serve alongside each slice. 7) Cover the pan with cling film and place the pudding in the fridge overnight. Place a weight, such as a can of baked beans, on top of the pudding to press the mixture down, this will ensure that the mixture soaks into the bread and the pudding is firm enough to cut. 8) To Turn out, peel back the cling film, then turn the pudding upside-down onto a plate and remove the cling film. Cut into slices and serve with the remaining berries and juice.

In Season This Month Fruits & Nuts - Apples, Apricot, Aubergine, Blackberries, Blackcurrants, Blueberries, Loganberries, Peaches, Plums, Raspberries, Redcurrants, Strawberries, Whitecurrants, Cobnuts, Hazelnuts. All About Cold Water Immersion

Fitness tips with Leanne Spencer | www.bodyshotperformance.com Cold water immersion has become more trendy, more popular and more well known and there’s a good reason for this: Its many health benefits!

How It Works Cold water immersion causes a very fast drop in temperature (it’s a bit of a shock to the system). Mentally, it puts you immediately into the moment and brings you into your body. Physically one of the ways it helps your health is with the fast drop in temperature causes vasoconstriction. Blood rushes to the vital organs in the body. So even though it feels quite shocking and uncomfortable on the outside, you’re getting increased circulation to your vital organs.

Health Benefits Health Benefits Include: • lowering stress levels • creating more mental toughness and resilience • increasing your immune system • boosting your circulation • improving sleep • feeling calmer • positively affecting your parasympathetic nervous system • increasing your metabolic function • improving mood • decreasing delayed onset muscle soreness

Mental Health It’s been shown to improve your mood, and has got strong links with mental health benefits as well. Mike Tipton, a researcher at the University of Portsmouth, has been studying what these extreme experiences can do to the human body and mind: “…led to an immediate improvement in mood following each swim and a sustained and gradual reduction in symptoms of depression, and consequently a reduction in, and then cessation of, medication. On follow-up a year later, she remains medication-free.” 16 | SE22 - July 2021

How To Get Started Not everyone lives near to the sea or to a pool, for many these may also not be accessible for other reasons. So how do you get started? A great way to start is with a cold shower or bath. A top tip is to have your normal shower, then at the end just slowly, turn it a bit colder. This way you have control, it’s a little less shocking and you can start building your resilience that way. In a bath, you can have your bath as normal, and as you drain the water just hose yourself down with the shower head on cold. Even just a cold splash of water to the face will work as a starting point – just start playing with it and seeing how it feels.

Recommended Temperature & Time You want to look at a pool that’s under about 15 degrees. The general rule is that you should stay in the water for as many minutes as it’s cold. For instance, if the pool is 14 degrees, it’s recommended you stay for 14 minutes. It takes a bit of time to get warm afterwards, but do not turn the hot shower on straight away, just let yourself ease into feeling warm afterwards.

Post Swim High It does feel great in your body once you come out. This is known as the ‘postswim high’ triggered by the release of beta-endorphins. Let us know how you go, if you do decide to jump into the ocean or jump into a pool, we’d love to see, and good luck.

Early Days With A Rescue Dog

Pets Corner with Leonie St Clair | www.londondogstraining.co.uk

M

any of you are rehoming dogs from abroad. All with the best of intentions but the temptation to go full swing helping your rescue dog live his ‘best life’, packing on PDA with lots of ‘fun’ experiences, is often the exact opposite of what he needs. Many foreign rescues will have lived on the streets or in kennels, a different experience from co-habiting with humans. Many will already have decided which humans are okay and which are not; men in particular may be viewed with intense suspicion. Undoing these strong associations can be challenging. For any rescue, the experience of being ‘airlifted’, sometimes literally, into a totally new environment with different types of human, new animals, objects, sounds and smells they have never encountered before, is traumatic. Some will have undergone this process of forced ‘dog rendition’ a number of times. On landing in its latest home, the rescue dog will be confused, anxious and insecure, others frustrated and angry, and wanting only to seek the safety of familiarity and to escape. The new owner wants to make the dog feel better, they try to soothe them with trips out to meet other dogs and friends. They give the dog lots of toys, delicious food, a padded bed. Many, with the best of intentions, try to get the dog into training classes right away. The dog may reject all of these and try to hide, eating only when the owners are well out of sight. The harder the owners try to make the dog feel better the worse things seem to get until after just a few weeks the dog and owner are in crisis.

Here is a guide to the first weeks and months with your rescue: • The process of rescue renders many dogs crate aversive but create a den area in a quiet place in the home, where your dog can rest undisturbed. • Sleep and plenty of it is the key to recovery. Leave your dog alone to rest. • Scatter food near his den and let him forage. Put food into Kongs or other toys and let him discover these near his den. 18 | SE22 - July 2021

• We want to encourage a bond with the new dog but not neediness, so letting him slowly relax and ‘discover’ how the immediate home works will help. • Let him come to you in his own time and slowly start to build interactions with him but don’t crowd him with affection. Many dogs will not value touch at first. • Give your dog access to a garden or an outside space so he knows where to toilet. • Give him time to get used to all the noises and routines in your home (your dog may never have been exposed to a range of household devices and noises, they may never have trodden on or smelt a carpet before). • Postpone visits to the park, other dogs and wider family, until you can see your dog has started to relax. A decent knowledge of canine body language is a must as signs of stress and anxiety can be quite subtle. • Speak to your vet about calming supplements. • Take time to get your dog used to a lead, collar and harness in the home before trying to go out on walks. Many dogs may never have encountered any of these before. • When you do eventually go out for a first walk remember your dog will be learning all the time. Go slowly and be patient. I am indebted to my colleagues Denise Nuttall and Alton Matherne for this article.

Run in 4

Aiming to break the silence that 1 in 4 pregnancies result in loss or premature birth through creating a running movement.

R

ight now, 1 in 4 pregnancies end in miscarriage, stillbirth or premature birth. It’s a similar figure to those suffering from mental ill health, a topic only just beginning to break its taboo. It is likely that someone you have spoken to today has lost a child, but they might not be willing to talk about it.

Meet David East Dulwich resident David, a supporter of the baby charity Tommy’s, is launching a campaign to raise awareness of those 1 in 4 pregnancies and help people realise they are not alone: that losing a child does not have to define you. Back in 2017 David’s first son Harry was born prematurely at 26 weeks at Kings College Hospital and sadly died after just 3 days. Those 3 days gave him and his wife Sarah an insight into how it feels to be parents and to have that taken away so suddenly left them with many unanswered questions. “I didn’t want my grief to own me. It’s a classic coping mechanism, but I started running. I wanted to run a marathon straight away but, having spent years working at a desk, my body struggled to adapt. I jumped into it too hard - I overcame the physical injuries, but the mental struggle was harder. Now, the time spent running is time I spend with Harry and that makes it better. From being part of a running community, I have learnt how to approach running both physically and mentally and want to use something I enjoy and create a movement to help others” To launch the movement David is attempting to break the Guinness World record at the London Landmarks half marathon on 1 August 2021 by registering the fastest time as someone dressed as the number 4.

The Plan To support the over 500,000 parents impacted by baby loss in the UK yearly, David and Tommy’s are creating a community of Run in 4 runners and supporters who will raise awareness that a great number of parents have lost a child but don’t always feel able to talk about it. We want people to feel that they can take time to remember while achieving something they may never have before 22 | SE22 - July 2021

they became parents. Profits from the movement will go towards Tommy’s pioneering research and support.

The Ask Whether as runner or supporter, we want people to feel connected and not alone. Through our unique pink and blue running apparel we aim to create a sense of togetherness - for runners in a supportive community. Visit www.runin4.co.uk to buy a pink and blue runner’s sweatband and alternate pink and blue running laces. Wear these with pride on training runs, group runs and race days. Be ready to be asked why you are wearing them and help increase the awareness of baby and pregnancy loss. Join the conversation and follow @Run_In_4 on Instagram or search using #RunIn4, tagging people in your photos using this hashtag Share posts on your personal account to help spread awareness and further the movement Look to get involved in other central initiatives coming soon @Run_In_4 on Instagram and at www.runin4.co.uk.

Fit, Healthy & Happy Education News from Alleyn's | www.alleyns.org.uk Tom Scott Soundy, Sports Coach, and Daniel Bearfoot-Fallon, Functional Movement Specialist, both at Alleyn’s Junior School, tell us how to help our children stay fit and healthy.

W

e all know that exercise and physical activity keeps us physically and mentally healthy. For children it’s especially important because it aids their growth, physical literacy and overall wellbeing. The NHS recommends that children should be active for at least 60 minutes a day, ideally with 30 minutes of that occurring outside school. So how can we achieve that? Here are some simple and effective principles to help keep your child fit and healthy:

FUNDamentals First and foremost, whatever activity you decide to do, make it enjoyable. Prioritise play over competition and process over outcome - and avoid a focus on ‘succeeding’ or ‘failing’. As a result, your child will stay involved for longer, which will help them to improve their physical literacy.

UNSTRUCTURED ACTIVITIES This may seem counter intuitive, but many children have ample structure throughout the day with school, possibly after-school clubs and daily home life. You risk losing ‘buy-in’ to an activity if there is no freedom within it. Play and discovery are great opportunities to change traditional rules or add new elements, providing some boundaries but a greater sense of freedom. Remember, children are not mini adults and they need more rest and recovery as their bodies develop.

STAY BROAD Ironically a big danger can be your child being identified early as being particularly good at a certain activity. This can be very exciting for them and you but don’t fall into the trap of solely pursuing just one sport too early. Expose your child to multiple activities because this will make them more rounded and enable them to develop transferable skills to keep their options open in the future. 24 | SE22 - May 2021

DO IT TOGETHER Typically, families spend time bonding during sedentary activities such as going to the cinema or watching television. Exercising as a family or with your child creates an opportunity to establish what could potentially be a lifelong habit. Not only is this a great way for you to find time to exercise but it also sets an example to your child and gives you some all-important quality time together.

KEEP MOVING Fundamentally, doing something is better than doing nothing! Start small, keep it manageable and have fun. Do this and you’re more likely to stick to it! The important thing to remember is that we are trying to establish habits and skills that last a lifetime. Not only will those habits promote physical activity and the myriad of benefits that come with that, but exercise plays a huge role in a child’s emotional and mental development. Evidence shows that more active children have more confidence, higher self-esteem, less anxiety and stress, and better social skills – all attributes that can help them deal with the challenges they face in daily life - in essence, exercise makes us happier!

The Rise Of The Side Hustle

T

he economic fall out of the pandemic has seen what is now known as the side hustle. Although the term side hustle may sound hip, edgy, new and exciting, it is not really. A side hustle is just another name for simply earning an extra income. It is not a new economic activity. What may be new, is the volume of people engaged in a side hustle; and the number of side hustles that are maturing into a small business. It is not surprising to learn about the increase in the side hustle in the economy as a result of the financial upheaval to households in the wake of the pandemic: • “11m people have borrowed to make ends meet since the beginning of the pandemic, including 2.8 million who have used high-cost credit to make ends meet.” (Step Change) • “1 in 4 people not expected to recover financially from the pandemic for at least 12 months.” (Turn2us) • “4.3 million people are behind on household bills including council tax, rent and utilities.” (Step Change) It is with this economic landscape that some households have put their recovery plan into action. The seemingly unspoken approach was we’ll fight our way out with whatever skills, knowledge or experience at our disposal. This became the 2020-21 trademark for side hustling and side hustlers. The marketing and monetarising of their personal skills, knowledge or experience was the catalyst to generate additional income. Furlough was also another driver. Many employees encountered furlough and for some employees, furlough was a first step to permanent loss of employment. The combination of the global pandemic, economic fall-out and household financial pain, collectively contributed to the noticeable rise in

26 | SE22 - July 2021

the side hustle. Aimee a mother of three who was a consultant in the hospitality sector transitioned her skills into online coaching at the height of the pandemic. “I already had my coaching qualification but had never used it before last autumn. However, with the heart of the hospitality sector being ripped out, I had to find an alternative source of income for family survival as we’ve always been a two income family.” Noel, a father of two children and qualified car maintenance engineer, did not regard furlough as a long term survival strategy. “I have always had an interest in cooking and baking, so I saw this as an opportunity to test myself, by baking cakes and puddings during my period of furlough and lockdown. I am still surprised how the word spread and demand has grown.” It is this demand growth and expansion in a side hustle that can signal danger for the side hustler. Yes, you’ve guessed it, HMRC and income tax. For most side hustlers, income tax is never at the front of the mind at the start or at any phase in their side hustle development. However, it often surprises them when they learn that their successful side hustle may become subjected to income tax. In short, earning over £1,000 additional income must be declared to HMRC via self-assessment. With this backdrop of income tax and selfassessment, side hustlers should consider the following three steps to avoid any tears as their side hustle transitions into a small business: 1) from day one keep detailed records of their side hustle expenses and income, as it may unknowingly convert into business income and business expenses; 2) open or use a separate bank account for all the side hustle spending and income receiving; and 3) seek professional advise as soon as the side hustle surplus approaches £1,000 As the side hustle activity rises beyond 25% of the population, HMRC will keep a watchful eye out on the side hustlers.

ulwich Hamlet has seen some great players over the years. Indeed Edgar Kail was so great they named the approach to Dog Kennel Hill Sainsbury’s after him. In recent years too a steady procession of players have graced Champion Hill before going on to scrape a living in the lower reaches of the professional game. But now one of Gavin’s Graduates has made it into the Premier League. About a decade ago, a young gangly midfielder started making a few appearances for Dulwich Hamlet, famously coming off the bench to help the pride of East Dulwich hold out for the draw against Burgess Hill that would see them win the Isthmian South (oh happy day). That youngster was Ethan Pinnock, a local boy who over six years at Champion Hill would earn a degree in Physical Education while playing in pretty much every position for the Pink and Blues, before finding his métier in the centre of defence. Those who witnessed Ethan’s last couple of seasons with the Hamlet will know he was destined for the professional leagues. His poise, athleticism and ability to read the game soon attracted a host of club scouts. And sure enough off Ethan went; to Forest Green Rovers in the football hotbed of rural Gloucestershire. After a successful stint there, Ethan moved to Barnsley for a couple of seasons before Brentford snapped up the young colossus. If you know your footer you will know The

Bees have just gained promotion to the Premier League, with Ethan as the rock at the heart of their defence. So the newly capped Jamaican international will soon grace the Premier League. Every Hamlet fan wishes Ethan the very best. We are very proud of you indeed. Elsewhere, Champion Hill favourite Danny Mills has just been appointed to the Player Advisory Board of Kick It Out, English football’s leading equality and inclusion organisation. Dulwich Hamlet are long standing supporters of Kick It Out and their fight against discrimination for everyone who plays, watches or works in football. And as those of you who have been to Champion Hill will attest, it is at the heart of the club’s ethos that everyone, whatever their colour or creed, should feel safe, welcome and valued. Those of you who are members of the Supporters’ Trust won’t want to miss the AGM on 20 July 2021. Truly the social highlight of the year. And if you’re not a member, why not head to www.dhst.org.uk where you can join before hitting the online merch sale to pick up some sweet replica shirts for next to nothing. We are of course at the end of a season that never really was. Let's hope that next season will be able to kick off with fans present. So get your jabs, keep your distance and look out for updates at: www.dulwichhamletfc.co.uk.

SE22 Councillors Councillor Charlie Smith - Goose Green Labour Councillor | charlie.smith@southwark.gov.uk

High Street Recovery Fund Southwark Council have recently launched the High Street Recovery Fund. The aim of the fund high streets and town centres economic renewal in light of the COVID 19 pandemic. If you have a great idea that will help our high streets and town centres thrive then please go to https://www. Southwark.gov.uk/highstreetrecoveryfund The aim is to attract more people back to Southwark’s high streets and town centres and to increase the amount spent in the area. The Fund is open to a wide variety of organisations and partnerships are welcomed that bring together diverse skills and expertise. The closing date for applications is 5pm on the 27th July 2021.

COVID 19 Vaccinations COVID 19 cases have been on the increase in Southwark recently. The Government decided the easing of lockdown restrictions would be extended till the 19th July. In the meantime, the same restrictions stay in place. It is still important to carry out some simple measures to try and get the number of infections reduced. Wear a mask where required. Keep safe social distancing and remember to wash your hands. Two doses of the COVID 19 vaccine will give the best protection against the virus. Please do not hesitate if you have not yet had the jab. The more of us who get vaccinated the sooner we can return to a more normal life.

Parliamentary Boundary Review The Boundary Commission for England has published its proposals for changes to UK Parliamentary constituencies in England. The proposals see Greater London gaining two seats, taking its total to 75. There are changes to all constituencies currently covering the London Borough of Southwark. Notably, under these proposals, there would be four MPs covering parts of LBS, rather than the current three. The major changes are that the new Vauxhall and Camberwell seats (replacing Vauxhall) would cover three wards on the western 34 | SE22 - July 2021

edge of Southwark, where it previously covered no areas of LBS. The new Dulwich and Sydenham seat (more or less replacing Dulwich and West Norwood) would cover Southwark and Lewisham, rather than Southwark and Lambeth as is currently the case. The review is due to conclude in June 2023. The Council, political parties and individuals will be entitled to take part in this review.

Dulwich Review Consultation There is still time to take part in this consultation. The closing date is the 11th July.

Goodbye Year 6 Year 6 pupils are about to end five years at primary school and will be looking forward to starting at their various senior schools in September. Here they will make new friends possibly for life. Good luck to you all on this grate new adventure.

School Streets A number of Dulwich schools now have procedures in place to make the school street safer and improve the air quality to encourage a more pleasant environment. Many of our local schools close off the street in the mornings and afternoons at drop off and pick up times. (See accompanying photograph).nThe Council would like to encourage more walking and cycling to and from schools. Best wishes Councillor Charlie Smith

The Last Word – Nichola Penman Nichola is a local interior designer, working on many Dulwich homes over the last 6 years. She is passionate about creating spaces that feel as good to live in as they look, with the belief that how we live and design our homes, can provide a great source of happiness and contentment.

How long have you lived in the area? We moved to East Dulwich in January 2017, from West Norwood. This area always appealed to me hugely, as so many great places to eat and drink and a friendly village like vibe.

What do you most value about the area? So many things, which is why I love living here! My daily walks to Dulwich Park with our dog Teddy, the beautiful homes, Dulwich Village and definitely all the great local pubs!

The one thing you couldn’t do without The shops on Lordship Lane, food shops and the other independents. During lockdown, when the only treat was buying good food to eat, I would queue for ages at William Rose, Moxon’s and Mons and I felt very grateful to have them so close.

What was the last thing you bought there? A beautiful ceramic plate with stunning colour detail. Ceramics are a passion of mine and they always stock some lovely pieces. I bought it as housewarming present for a good friend who was delighted with it.

Your favourite place to go for a drink?

If money was no object..

The Lordship Pub on Lordship Lane. I call it ‘my local’. Love the food, wine list, atmosphere, lovely people who work there, everything! I missed it so much when it was shut and very happy when the doors opened again.

I would buy a property in Court Lane gardens. I’ve been lucky enough to work on a couple of homes there and had real house envy. As they are set back from the road with the private garden at the front, they are shielded from traffic. Plus the huge gardens back onto Dulwich park, so the views are uninterrupted. You could be in the middle of the countryside in those gardens.

The best kept secret The American Garden in Dulwich Park. It’s surrounded by huge bushes, so you feel like you could be anywhere. I do outdoor yoga there with Tania Brown, which is such a treat. A lovely way to spend an hour in the summer mornings.

When I want to relax … I love the spontaneous glass of wine or two, at end of the working day with a good friend and chew the fat. I’m lucky enough to have some great mates within walking distance, so there’s always a chance to catch up.

What is your favourite shop? Home interior shops are my favourite, which makes sense with my job. Ed on North Cross Road and Rigby & Mac in West Dulwich always have a little gem to purchase. I think they buy really well and their stores always look well styled. 36 | SE22 - July 2021

The book I’m reading at the moment… Hamnet by Maggie O’Farrell. Prize winning book and Waterstones book of the year 2020. Only just started it and looking good from the start. Hamnet is Shakespeare’s son, the inspiration and reason he wrote the play Hamlet. Fascinating.

My secret ambition To become good at yoga. I marvel at the poses some people in my yoga class can hold, which shows their balance and strength. It takes a lot of practice and at least a few classes a week for a while to get there. Work does get in the way of some class times, but I could do more at home if I motivate myself more. To be good at anything takes commitment. Instagram @penmaninteriors nichola@penmnaninteriors.co.uk
