Welcome to SE22 This Month

T: 020 8088 1942 E: angela@semagazines.co.uk w: www.semagazines.co.uk @SEMags Photograph by Jermyn Photography

Welcome It is with much sadness that I let you know that Ingrid Beazley died just after I went to print last month. I know that many of you will know Ingrid as she was so active in the Dulwich area. Ingrid contacted me when I first started SE22 to forge a relationship between the magazines and the Dulwich Picture Gallery. A relationship that is still going strong over 10 years later. I know that I am not the only one to have benefited from her ideas, support and kindness. Over the years we were in touch regarding the Friends’ of Dulwich Picture Gallery, The Bigger Picture film club (still going strong at EDT) and, of course, the Street Art. So it is with the Street Art in mind that I thought it fitting to re print the article launching Ingrid’s book, Street Art Fine Art, which I know she was incredibly proud of. See page 39. In June I usually reflect back on what a wonderful Dulwich Festival we had, which of course we did. It just reminds me of some of the wonderful Private Views, Ingrid and Tom hosted so generously at their house, on the eve of the Artists’ Open House weekend. I know that many people will miss Ingrid; her family and her many dear friends in the area and around the World. We were very lucky to have her so near. See you next month

In Remembrance of Ingrid Beazley

Street Art Fine Art

The street art that has appeared in and around Dulwich in the last year is almost all based on old master paintings in the permanent collection at Dulwich Picture Gallery.

Left: Tiepolo – Joseph receiving Pharaoh’s Ring 1755. Below: Thierry Noir – Joseph receiving Pharaoh’s Ring 2013

A new book by Ingrid Beazley, who organised their execution, draws parallels between classic and contemporary styles, showing how works by painters such as Rembrandt, Gainsborough, Rubens, Tiepolo, Murillo and Van Dyke have influenced works by today’s most cutting edge street artists such as Stik, ROA, Thierry Noir, RUN, Phlegm, Pablo Delgado, Conor Harrington and MadC. Including stunning photography of the process and comments from the artists and the public.

Angela Angela Burgess, Head of All Things Community SE Magazines/Around Dulwich

Ingrid Beazley, former Chairman of the Friends of Dulwich Picture Gallery, and founder of the Dulwich Outdoor Gallery, died last month. This article was first published in April 2014 to celebrate the launch of Ingrid’s book. It felt fitting to republish it to show the lasting effect of Ingrid’s passion for art. Ingrid will be missed by so many of us in Dulwich and beyond. A celebration of her life will be held next month at the Dulwich Picture Gallery. My thoughts are with Tom, Kim, Bea and family. June News By Sarah Pylas

W

e are about midway through school half term and if - like me – you also work for yourself from home, you know you can’t just take a whole week off. You have to find a way to juggle ALL of your balls at the same time. For me, one of the best ways to keep those pesky balls up in the air is to get a head start on the laptop before the house wakes up. I achieve more between 6-8am than in the rest of the day! That being said, it is slightly easier now that my football-obsessed son is slightly older and wants to go to football camp every day! We booked him into Football Magic in Dulwich Village for a couple of sessions over Easter and he loved it so much, we re-enrolled him for a day over half term. This provided a brilliant excuse to also escape the work being done in our garden and the endless muddy footprints of various tradesfolk up and down the hallway. Now, I just need it to stop raining for long enough to light the new built-in barby… The Dulwich Festival was on while the really messy work was going on so preparing food for our Greek dips stall at the Dulwich Festival Fair and Dulwich Park Fair was fun… NOT SO MUCH! The Festival Fairs are always a highlight of the Festival. Bringing together a selection of the best craftspeople, designers, independent shops, family fun, local bars and food stalls, there was plenty to entertain the family. But, with the Dulwich Festival over for another year, it is time to turn our attentions to June. The ‘i used to know that’ - stuff you forgot from school – pub quiz at The Crooked Well on 4th June sounds like lots of fun and all for a great cause too! Tickets are £10 a head with all proceeds going to Link Age Southwark. Village Books of Dulwich Village will host a fascinating talk with Henry Hemming on 5th June

about two remarkable female spies and the man who ran them: an animal-loving drop-out who went on to become MI5’s greatest spymaster. Goodrich School is hosting their annual summer fair on 17th June featuring a surfboard simulator, tin can alley, BBQ and cakes, bouncy castle and live music. And, Dulwich Picture Gallery will present the first major UK exhibition of watercolours by the Anglo-American artist, John Singer Sargent (18561925), since 1918. The exhibition opens on 21st June. Next month, thousands of women will unite to help beat cancer on the Crystal Palace Race for Life 5k run. Details of how to register are on our website where you can also find details of all local news, events and ticket information. You can also find us on Facebook and follow us on Instagram and Twitter @arounddulwich.

Garden Talk

Eight ways to go organic in the garden It’s easy to panic and reach for a chemical spray at the first sight of greenfly or diseased plants. But there’s a more natural way. Here’s how:

infected leaves and destroy them – sterilising your secateurs afterwards. And a spray of 30% milk to water makes a good alternative to fungicide.

1) Encourage Wildlife

6) Ward Off Slugs And Snails

Instead of using pesticides that will harm all insects good and bad – lure in the beneficial ones. Ladybirds and hoverfly larvae will eat aphids – they like chives, fennel and cosmos, or invest in a bug hotel. Ground beetles eat slugs. Birds will help keep down snails as will frogs. Try a birdbath, feeder or berries for birds and a little pond for frogs.

2) Keep Weeds Down Naturally Weeds carry disease, and steal light, water and nutrients from your plants. A thick mulch of bark or well rotten manure will keep them at bay, as will pulling them out as young seedlings.

3) Patrol To Keep Control Aphids like the new tender growth of plants like clematis and rose buds, so keep an eye out for them - they can make leaves curl up. Squish them off by hand, or use a strong spritz of water. Or try soapy water made with Dr Bronner’s liquid soap or garlic sprays (see permaculture.com for recipe). After it’s rained, inspect any favourite, or young tender plants for slugs - pick them off and drown them! Also look out for plant diseases such as rose black spot, and prune any affected bits of the plant before it spreads.

4) Improve Your Soil Good soil is the key to plants that are less likely to be affected by pests and diseases. Adding compost or manure, will improve drainage of heavy soils and allow dry soils to hold moisture and nutrients – it’ll also encourage earthworms, which help create a good soil structure.

A great organic solution to slugs is nematodes, such as Nemaslug, that you pour onto the soil killing slugs above and below ground. Organic wool pellets that expand into a rough mat are another option as is crushed eggshell or gravel which slugs find hard to slither over. Or leave a half buried jar of beer near strawberries (you can buy commercial beer traps) or surround plants with copper rings that give slugs a little electric shock!

7) Fertilise Naturally Instead of quick fix chemical fertilisers, using organic fertilisers such as blood fish & bone, chicken pellets or seaweed will nourish the soil as well as the plant. Bio char and rock dust are good. See organiccatalogue.com for some great organic tomato and rose feeds.

8) Finally, Water Well The right amount of water stops plants becoming vulnerable to diseases. In warm weather a really good soaking once a week should be enough. Equally, be aware of waterlogging plants, especially those in pots as that can encourage spotting and other problems – if in doubt poke your finger into the soil and see how it feels. Even adopting just a few of the above ideas will help. Happy healthy gardening, Janine

5) Give Your Plants Breathing Space! One of the best ways to avoid powdery mildew – a white powdery disease on leaves is not to overcrowd plants. If you do spot the signs, cut off 12 | SE22 - June 2017

Food & Drink with Suzanne James

Crab Recipes Crab & Lemon Linguine Crab is absolutely at its best from May until November so now is the time to try this wonderful recipe. If you don't have linguini it also works well with spaghetti or fettuccine. Instead of crab meat you can use peeled, cooked prawns. Serves 4 Preparation time 10 minutes Cooking time 10 minutes

Ingredients • 400g (13oz) linguini • 400g (13oz) dressed white crab meat • 1 long red chilli, finely sliced • 1 clove garlic, crushed • Grated zest of 1 lemon • 2 tbsp Filippo Berio Extra Virgin olive oil • 2 tbsp torn chervil leaves • Juice of half a lemon

Method 1) Bring a large saucepan of salted water to the boil. Add the pasta to the pan, stir well and boil rapidly for around 8-10 minutes, or until al dente. 2) Meanwhile, combine the dressed crabmeat, chilli, crushed garlic and lemon zest in a bowl. Stir the extra virgin olive oil into the mixture, and season well with sea salt and freshly ground black pepper. Mix well with a fork to flake the crab meat. 3) Drain the cooked pasta and return it to the saucepan. Add the crab mixture, chervil leaves and lemon juice, and stir well to combine. 4) Drizzle with a little extra olive oil if desired. Taste and add extra lemon juice if you think it needs it. Serve immediately.

Fitness Tips

The Importance of Recovery Why recovery is as important as training and how to balance the two I recently ran the London Marathon for Alzheimer’s Research. I’ve trained several clients for a marathon, and the same thing happens every time; panic sets in a few weeks before and I refocus them on the importance of prioritising recovery and rest. Understanding the fine line between a healthy training volume and over-training is vital. Generally, we put too much emphasis on training, instead of balancing our efforts with rest and recovery.

What are the signs of poor recovery? Tuning into your body is a powerful way of reconnecting with yourself. The human body is extremely adept at sending us signals, but we’ve become good at ignoring them. There are typically six areas where you might have issues: • Sleep • Mental health • Body composition • Energy • Digestion • Fitness Sympathetic versus parasympathetic dominance The body is a complex system of nerves and impulses. The autonomic nervous system is comprised of the sympathetic nervous system and the parasympathetic nervous systems. Sympathetic relates to the fight / flight reactions. When the sympathetic nervous system is dominant, adrenaline is released by the adrenal glands, your heart rate is elevated ready for action, and blood flows to the parts of the body that need to mobilise and away from areas like the stomach. Parasympathetic relates to the classic rest / digest functions. This is a good state to be in most of the time, although too much time in this state will also 16 | SE22 - June 2017

result in health issues. A good balance is to spend most of your time in a parasympathetic state, with occasional peaks into sympathetic due to exercise and occasional and inevitable periods of moderate stress.

How can I measure sympathetic versus parasympathetic dominance? You can monitor your heart rate variability. I do this using a Polar H7 heart rate monitor and an app called Elite HRV. Every morning before I get up I take a morning readiness test which takes 2.5 minutes. The results of that test tell me how well recovered I am and whether I am in a sympathetic or parasympathetic state.

The value of a good night’s sleep The body will do its job of healing if you have some good lifestyle habits in place. The main one is sleep. Having a good pre-bedtime routine is essential.

Active recovery Recovery isn’t all about resting, putting your feet up or sleeping. Active recovery is also very valuable, and that can be as simple as walking. Recovery includes your mind and body, so anything that relaxes your brain is important.

Put yourself in flight mode! When you’re on a plane, you have no choice but to sit still, watch a movie, listen to a podcast or read a book, or chat to your travelling companion. You can’t use your phone, and you can’t busy yourself around the house or office doing jobs. Every now and again, put yourself into flight mode and enjoy some time at home or outside doing very little.

Exciting Science Ben Jones, Director of Science at Alleyn’s, on how to use the Scientific Method to encourage and feed children’s curiosity It has become a mantra within the Alleyn’s science department that our aim is to encourage and to feed curiosity. But what makes our job as science teachers so enjoyable is that children are born curious. It stands to reason, therefore, that exciting children about science at home should be simple. Give your child a slinky spring and that should keep them occupied for the day and lead them to a complete understanding of the cosmos! Or not. A starting point when considering how to excite our children in science may well be to refer to the birth of modern science itself, and the development of the scientific method. So, in the style of Francis Bacon, here are some top tips:

Encourage your child’s questions about the world around them

Experiment

The scientific method starts when you ask a question about something that you observe, so listen to your child’s questions about the world around them and encourage them to ask more. • Encourage an inquisitive approach. How does that stay up? What’s making that noise? How does that work? What is that made up of? • Ask questions about cause-and-effect. If we were to do this, what might happen? What caused that to happen? • When facing physical problems at home (the wonky shelf, the rattling washing machine, the over-strong orange squash) ask what solutions there might be? (No pun intended).

• Encourage hands-on curiosity, • Think about your choice of toys; Lego is great for encouraging creativity and design. Bug catchers and binoculars are great for observation, • Let children make mistakes and wait before giving them the right answer, • Talk about an experiment being a ‘fair test’ (change only one factor at a time while keeping all other conditions the same), • Record observations and together come to a conclusion: Take pictures, make a scrapbook, present to brothers and sisters, • Decide what you’ll do next. As Scientists, we are curious about the world around us. Children are no different. Each day we have the privilege of encouraging and feeding that curiosity. Perhaps, even with a slinky spring.

Make a prediction

Useful links

• Discuss possible answers to questions and predict what will happen in different circumstances. Tempting though it is, avoid ‘I don’t know.’ • Hypothesise: Attempt to answer your question with an explanation that can be tested with a simple experiment.

Pets Corner

Working your dog’s nose

L

ast month we looked at the importance of play for pets. This time I want to focus on the dog and in particular his amazing sense of smell. It might be said that a dog ‘sees’ through its nose. Humans are primarily a sound and vision species, we rationalise our environment using eyes and ears. For instance, we recognise people by how they look and sound. Not so dogs, they recognise each other primarily via a signature scent and use smell to make sense of the world around them. Dogs have 300 million olfactory receptors to our 6 million. They have a specialist smell analysis organ in the roof of the mouth and use tail wags to broadcast personal scent information from their anal glands. This is why dogs that go blind or deaf can actually adjust quite well, because their premier sense is still intact. Our forefathers used dogs to hunt, track and forage - anything from truffles to an escaped convict was located in this way. Today we still employ the dog’s powerful scenting ability to locate missing people, for customs and excise work and for bomb detection. At Medical Detection Dogs in Milton Keynes exciting work is underway harnessing the dog’s nose to sniff out human cancers and to train diabetes and allergen alert dogs. This work is based on the dog’s ability to detect minute odour traces created by disease or changes in the environment. Dogs are able to detect tiny odour concentrations, around one part per trillion (the equivalent of one teaspoon of sugar in two Olympic sized swimming pools), there is potential to detect diseases, such as cancer, much earlier than is currently possible. While working dogs are encouraged to use their sense of smell many pet dogs are actively discouraged. Understandably owners do not want their pet shoving a nose into the crotch of a visitor or lingering too long at the pile of fox poo in the park. However, harnessing the dog’s nose

in the right way can really add value to walks and exercise with the dog. The easiest way is to teach your dog a basic ‘find’ exercise. Here’s how: 1) Start with a handful of tasty treats. Toss one to your left, point and say “find”! Then toss one to your other side and cue. Repeat six times. 2) Get your dog to sit and wait or have someone hold his lead or tether him. Walk 10 to 15 feet away and let him see you place a treat on the floor. Walk back to his side, pause, and point saying “find” encouraging him to go and get the treat. Repeat 6 times, unhooking the lead each time. 3) Next, have your dog sit and wait, or tether him and ‘hide’ the treat in an easy hiding place. Walk back to his side, pause, and cue him encouraging him to go get the treat. Repeat 6 times. 4) Again, have your dog sit and wait. This time hide several treats in easy places while he’s watching. Return to his side, pause, and cue him. Don’t help if he doesn’t find them right away. You can repeat the cue and gesture, but don’t show him where it is; you want him to work to find it. 5) Hide the treats in harder and harder places: behind a chair leg or surfaces off the ground 6) Finally, put him in another room while you hide treats. Bring him back in and cue him. Now you can use ‘find’ to exercise your dog inside or outside. You’ll be amazed how tired your dog is after some nose work. Leonie St Clair - www.londondogstraining

East Dulwich Society Merges with Dulwich Society

or some years the East Dulwich Society has effectively been dormant. It led a number of high profile campaigns in the past the last being fighting to try and keep the Dulwich Hospital fully open. But in recent years local residents have chosen to join the active Dulwich Society. The Dulwich Society has as a result been taking more interest in East Dulwich, which naturally provides so many of the wider Dulwich areas facilities. In recognition of this a Special AGM was held of the East Dulwich Society where its remaining members decided to formally close the East Dulwich Society transferring all remaining funds and members to the Dulwich Society. These funds will be used to support East Dulwich projects. I’d like to say a big thank you to Janet and Chris Coy and other East Dulwich Society committee members and general members for all the years of sterling service to our community. Thank you. I’d also like to say a big thank you to The Dulwich Society for what it has achieved so far and all the things I expect them to help achieve locally in the future. The Dulwich Society has a number of sub-committees on Traffic and Transport, Planning and Architecture, Trees, Wildlife, Local History, Gardens. I look forward to them helping make the area better. I would encourage any one with a passion to make East Dulwich better to join the Dulwich Society (£10 a year) www.dulwichsociety.com/membership or call 020 8693 6313 and get stuck in.

Summer Holidays

The incidence of burglary locally is very low at around 11/ 5,250 homes each month. We’ve worked really hard to get it down this low. But knowing this rate is low is of little comfort if you’re one of those unfortunate 11 homes each month! Before the July SE22 some will already have departed for summer holidays. Before leaving please make sure your home is super secure – please complete this 5 minute online home security survey to spot easy things you can improve - https://thecrimepreventionwebsite. com/home - s e cur i t y -a ss e ssment /4 6 8/di y home-security-survey/ As part of your holiday preparation it is worth completing this checklist 36 | SE22 - June 2017

Do ask a trusted neighbour to keep an eye on your home to make sure post and leaflets aren’t left sticking out of letter boxes showing you’re away. Ask them to water flowerpots. Get your garden and lawn trim before leaving. Put some timer lights around the house and even a timer on a radio. Hide valuables. And lastly don’t alert people outside your trusted family and friendship group that you’re going away – and that means not advertising that you’re away through Facebook and other social media. Conversely keep an eye out on your neighbours properties when they’re away. And if you’d like a free property making kit to make your home even less attractive to burglars then get in touch as we still have a few left to give away.

Financial Matters

I don’t like paperwork!

A

recent HMRC case took me back to 1979 and The Boomtown Rats hit, ‘I don’t like Mondays.’ The case served as a stark reminder for all taxpayers who champion operating beyond the realms of the tax authority. In summary, the case centred on a businessman who failed to pay any tax on his earnings because he wasn’t a “paperwork person”. How many times have I heard I am not a paper person and not because the taxpayer is an environmentalist saving the planet but just oblivious or made of steel to challenge all powers of taxation? Too many to recount. Nevertheless in this case the nonenvironmentalist taxpayer came unstuck. The case is somewhat sad because the taxpayer had kept meticulous business records, and ensured that his bookkeeper and accountant were notified of all receipts and earnings. However, he failed to sign or post his tax returns that his advisors had prepared on his behalf. Despite this, in his defence he claimed that he thought his advisors had submitted the documents. A HMRC spokesperson said “the taxpayer could have avoided jail, and was given every opportunity to get his tax affairs in order. However, despite warnings and advice from professionals, the taxpayer showed a blatant disregard for the tax system and funded a lavish lifestyle at taxpayers’ expense. The taxpayer thought he was above the law, but he was wrong.” Although in this case the size of the fraud was in excess of £1m, the size of the case is not the issue. The principle was the failure to fulfil one’s tax obligation. This was expressed by the judge, “you knew full well what your obligations were. Your evasion was deliberate and dishonest, choosing instead to do the bare minimum and then only when backed into a corner”. A custodial sentence was handed down to the tax payer and a confiscation hearing was planned to recover the proceeds. Taxpayers should note the wording of the judge is synonymous with the tax penalty guidelines applied by HMRC as seen in Table 1. Taxpayers may incur an additional penalty of 30% of the unpaid taxes if they fail to notify HMRC of an under assessment of tax, in relation to an assessment made by HMRC. Irrespective of a taxpayer’s affinity or desire to keep and maintain records to enable the

accurate filing of tax returns, this is an irrelevance. It is their statutory duty to file a tax return if they fall within self-assessment. Failure to comply as demonstrated in this case or any concealment of information will always be rewarded with financial penalties and sometimes a custodial sentence. There is an old adage that says, ‘discipline is doing what you know needs to be done even if you don’t want to do it.’ HMRC uncovered the taxpayer’s fraud through its property taskforce, set up to identify those who avoid paying tax on property transactions. The taxpayer hadn’t paid capital gains tax on a property he’d sold, breaching an earlier agreement that gave him the opportunity to get his tax affairs in order. This begs the question how many other taxpayers especially in this era of right to buy have sold properties, pocketed the cash and await detection by HMRC. Despite the temptation by some taxpayers to keep all the proceeds and express an allergy to paper work, all tax payers should reflect on the quality of their tax records system. This is especially important as we move into the birth of Making Tax Digital from April 2018. I don’t like Mondays may be understandable. However, I don’t like paper work is less understandable, especially when the latter can lead to financial pain and loss.

The Last Word - Anne Lynch I am a painter originally from Edinburgh but I have lived in London since 1973. I now live in Brockley close to Hilly Fields. I have a wonderful studio in my garden and exhibit regularly in lots of groups shown Britain, Europe and USA.

How long have you lived in the area? I have lived here for 19 years and did not know of the area until I saw my flat. I was searching for a larger two-bedroom property with good light and in a quiet area. I was immediately attracted to the large Victorian houses and the amount of greenery in all the streets. Also most of the streets are very wide.

What do you most value about the area? I most value two things one, that I have enough space to have a studio in my garden and two the quietness of this area the space it offers, lots of trees and its wonderful park Hilly Fields at the bottom of the road. The park is well used for sports, general picknickers, children’s football, cricket and once a month they have a family run all around the park, which is very popular.

The one thing you couldn’t do without? It is the general friendliness and wide cultures in this area that gives a rich community and belonging and caring. I very important and I value the amount there is all around..

range of sense of find this of space

Do you know your neighbours? Yes I have got to know lots of people in the area and we often meet for coffee or at the various local events throughout the year. All my neighbours are very friendly and try to look out for each other when necessary. So many events are run by volunteers in the Brockley area that it is not difficult to meet your neighbours.

Where are you to be found on Saturday? We often go to the Brockely Open Market for coffee or lunch. They have excellent selection of food, vegetables, cheeses, breads, cakes, etc., as well as good takeaway food. It has also become a good meeting place and regularly catch up with friends.

What is your favorite place to eat? We have several, the award winning Brockley Rock for fish and chips where we try to go there every Friday when we can. The Orchard Pub in Brockley has excellent food and also hosts night quizzes, The Talbot Pub at the bottom of my road also is a very friendly place to eat and they also host many events from craft fairs to meetings of many groups. 40 | SE22 - June 2017

Coffee or tea? Where? The best hot chocolate I think in this area is in the Brockley Mess on Brockley Road I also think the Cafe in Hilly Fields Park is amazing as it is open very early in the morning and are extremely friendly with superb sandwiches.

Where’s your favourite place to walk? Walking around the area has a wonderful selection of houses and curiosities to look at. We are particularly fond of the Brockley Cemetery which is full of history and when in season the best place for blackberries. Interestingly in our street Tyrwhitt there are many plum trees and often produce great amount.

When I want to relax… We are very close to the Picturehouse cinema, which is always fun to visit and have a range of good films. It is calming walking over Blackheath Common and then into Greenwich Park. Which has a special deer section something I only recently discovered.

If money was no object.. I would buy one of the houses overlooking Hilly Fields not only because of the space you would have in the front of your house but as it is on a hill you get a superb view over London. www.annelynch.com 7-21 June Exhibiton at Jeannie Avent Gallery www.jeannieavent.com
