T

he three Dulwich Foundation Schools Alleyn’s, Dulwich College and JAGS will come together on 16 March 2016 to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the consecration of Christ’s Chapel of God’s Gift at Dulwich. Over 450 pupils, alumni, teachers, parents and members of the local community will perform Verdi’s choral masterpiece, the Requiem Mass at Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall. They will be joined by internationally recognised soloists Jane Irwin (Soprano), Louise Callinan (Mezzo Soprano), David Butt Philip (Tenor) and Rodney Earl Clarke, Old Alleynian (Bass). Verdi’s Requiem is a masterpiece of late 19th century composition and the programme will also include Verdi’s Pater Noster which will be performed by all those singing and playing. The concert will be

conducted by the three Directors of Music: Mr Chris Dearmer, Mr Richard Mayo and Mr Peter Gritton. Christ’s Chapel in Dulwich was consecrated in 1616 by George Abbot, Archbishop of Canterbury, as part of the Dulwich College foundation. Edward Alleyn built his College of God’s Gift on Dulwich Green and since then the Chapel has been a place of worship for the local community and for the three Dulwich Schools of the Foundation; Alleyn’s, Dulwich College and JAGS. The Heads of the three Foundation Schools, Dr Gary Savage of Alleyn’s, Dr Joe Spence of Dulwich College, and Sally-Anne Huang of JAGS, anticipate this wonderful occasion will be an opportunity for the wider communities of the three schools to come together and celebrate in music. All are welcome and tickets are available through Southbank Centre. 0844 8479910 or www.southbankcentre.co.uk

Spring Thoughts By Sarah Pylas

T

here’s still a chill in the air, but the days are most definitely getting longer and brighter. After hibernating for most of February, my thoughts are now turning to spring and I am itching to get outside again. However, before I could even think about making a comeback on the high street, first I had to make an appointment to have the grey roots of winter removed. I was 25-years old when I found my first grey hair, panicked and attacked it with a pair of tweezers! Since then, I have experimented with deep red, honey blonde, warm brown, very dark brown, very light blonde, highlights, lowlights and orange/yellow stripes. The latter being a homecolouring mistake that resulted in months of salon colour correction treatments and a slow – not to mention expensive - return to my 'natural' shade. The wonderful team at Jo Partridge on North Cross Road have been hiding the silver stripe that lurks beneath since I moved to the area 8-years ago. Ask for Miranda or Emily and tell them that I sent you. Also enjoying a spring makeover was Watson's General Telegraph (formerly The Rose) on Forest Hill Road. I spent a very pleasant evening there with a few of the mums from my son's school. We sat outside, huddled around a sunken fire pit and sipped wine until closing. Just what we needed with half term about to be upon us! We did all smell a bit like barbeque in the morning, though... Speaking of half term, our first visit of the school break was to the Dinosaur Monster Families exhibition at the Horniman Museum. On display was a nearly complete skeleton of a dinosaur hatchling, a real dinosaur leg bone and a life-size Tarbosaurus skeleton cast. It was fascinating and will be open

until 30th October so don't worry if you missed it this time. If you do pop in over Easter, be sure to also check out the Horniman Easter Fair from 26-27 March. Kids can hop around the Gardens with the Horniman Bunny, go on an Easter egg trail and take part in craft activities. Sport Relief is back this March and I will be joining Team Honk on another epic fundraising challenge again. This year, we will be attempting to break the Guinness World Record for visiting the most tube stations in the fastest time. You can read more about the challenge and sponsor us here: my.sportrelief.com/sponsor/ TeamHonkTubeChallenge Just a reminder that the stallholder information packs for the Dulwich Festival Fair on Sunday 8th May have been sent out. I will be there with my sister-in-law and our Greek dips, so please do swing by and say hello! Email angela@semagazines.co.uk to register your interest in having a stall. Hectic Host

Mother’s Day

T

he pampering of mums should not be restricted to one day a year, but for that one Sunday in March failure to make that little extra effort will not go unnoticed. Some dads and co-mums are better equipped than others with the necessary kitchen skills so as always I advise keeping it simple. I would suggest forsaking the full-on cooked Sunday lunch for a far simpler brunch. As the portmanteau describes, it is the meal that should sit somewhere between breakfast and lunch, around noon on a Sunday seems the most civilised. Although we think of brunch as a modern American innovation, it is believed to be a British invention; the Smithsonian traces the first use of the word to 1985. It is thought that the meal gained popularity post war in the US diners, which with more women working in the 1950s became popular family weekend destinations. A staple of all diner menus is Eggs Benedict and Delia Smith’s recipe is by far the simplest. Grill some pancetta until crispy, pile onto a buttered toasted muffin halves (I am rather partial to the thick light ones from the General Store on Bellenden Road, where incidentally you can pick up the most delicious Bakewell Tarts for tea), top with a poached egg and spoon over a generous helping of shop (yes shop) bought hollandaise sauce (there is a great one, indistinguishable from homemade, from F. C. Soper on Evelina Road in Nunhead). Pop under the grill for 20 seconds and away you go. Buck’s Fizz and Mimosas are always associated with Sunday brunch and they are often mistakenly believed to be the same drink. A Mimosa is equal parts Champagne and orange juice and a Bucks Fizz is two parts orange juice and one-part Champagne. You will probably have a good idea if the mum in question is more Mimosa than Buck’s Fizz. The Buck’s Fizz was invented in London’s Buck’s Club in 1921. The Mimosa is named after the blossom of the Mimosa Tree, which was interestingly given to women on International Working Women’s Day – communist

12 | SE22 - March 2016

Russia’s version of Mother’s Day, a holiday for women on an otherwise normal working day. If she is more of a Mimosa mum, you can even up the ante a little more with the addition of a dash of Grand Marnier; a Grand Mimosa. Given that the Mimosa is so named because of the colour of the fruit used it would be difficult to vary this without changing the cocktail completely. Freshly squeezed clementine juice is a sweet and delicious alternative which still retains the integrity of the cocktail’s colour inspired name. Either drink should be served in a tall Champagne flute into which both chilled ingredients are combined. If the kids want to join in the fun, or non-drinkers or drivers, the most elegant alternative is swapping the booze with dry ginger, which is less syrupy and a little more sparklingly effervescent that lemonades and soda. Happy Mother’s Day! Lawrence Roullier White www.roullierwhite.com

Food & Drink with Suzanne James

The Traditional Spanish Tortilla This month our new chef Natalia has created a wonderful menu full of authentic Spanish dishes for our East Dulwich Supper Club evening and here she has been kind enough to share her wonderful Tortilla recipe with us! Serves 4 Preparation time 15 minutes maximum Cooking time approximately 30 minutes

Ingredients • 6 Large Free Range Eggs • 1.5 kg Vivaldi Potatoes • 2 Large White Onions • Filippo Berio Olive Oil • Salad Leaves as garnish • Tomatoes for salad

Method 1) Get your pan on the heat warming with the oil to deep fry the potatoes and onions. 2) Peel the potatoes and keep in salted water while you turn your attention to the onions. 3) Peel the onions, then very roughly cut them into eights - they need to stay quite large so they don't get lost in the tortilla. 4) Using a small very knife, carefully slice the potatoes into thin random shape pieces, they need

Food in Season Fruit & Nuts - Forced Rhubarb Vegetables & Herbs - Brussels Sprouts, Cabbage, Cauliflower, Celeriac, Chicory, Jerusalem Artichoke, Kale, Leeks, Onion, Pak Choi, Parsnip, Purple Sprouting Broccoli, Salsify, Spinach, Spring Onions, Swede, Turnips, Sweet Potato, Wild Nettles Meat & Game - Hare, Spring Lamb, Fish - Cockles, Cod, Dab, Dover Sole, Gurnard, Hake, Halibut, Langoustine, Lemon Sole, Lobster, Mussels, Oysters, Red Mullet, Salmon, Shrimp, Whitebait, Winkles 14 | SE22 - March 2016

to be different shapes and sizes so they don't create 1 single layer and the egg mix can get in between all the pieces of potato and onion. 5) Add the potato pieces and onion chunks to the "Hot" (not boiling) oil and fry until soft (not golden). 6) While the onions and potatoes are cooking, beat your eggs in a metal bowl and set aside. 7) Once the potatoes are cooked, using a slotted spoon, remove them from the oil and add to the egg mix. 8) Remove all the oil from the tortilla pan - be careful this will be hot! Then return to the heat and add all of the egg, onion and potato mix to the pan and gently stir. 9) Once it starts to look like very loose scrambled egg, leave it alone to set. 10) After a few minutes it will be cooked enough for you to turn over! This is the scary bit but be brave! 11) Invert a plate just bigger than the pan over the top, placing one hand on the pan handle and one hand on the plate, then in one swift movement flip it over. 12) Now slide the tortilla back in the pan and cook the other side. 13) Once both sides are golden brown and the centre is cooked to your liking it is ready to serve with a delicious fresh salad. Don't tell Natalia, but a delicious twist on this would be to add some fresh red chilli and fresh thyme and then finish off by grating some Manchego cheese over the top whilst it is still warm. Seven mistakes people make when choosing a Personal Trainer

C

hoosing a personal trainer can be tricky; there are a lot of trainers in the area, and most of them are making the same claims. To help you make a decision you won’t regret, I’m sharing with you the seven mistakes I see people making time and time again.

Making a decision based on price

delivering a high quality of service. They will also restrict the number of clients they work with because they don’t need to work long hours to make a decent living.

Not asking what the selection criteria is to sign up

The old adage ‘buy cheap buy twice’ applies to personal training. Be very wary of choosing the cheapest trainer; in order to make a decent living they will have to be working a lot of hours. You will not get the attention you deserve, and the trainer will struggle to support you outside of the sessions.

A good and reputable personal trainer or company will have selection criteria. If they don’t, then the implication is they’re happy to work with anyone, which means they’re probably just trying to scrape by as opposed to really making a difference for their client. Look for someone who clearly states on their website what type of person they are looking to work with.

Going with the person who claims to do it all

Not screening for a strong and relevant google presence

Anyone claiming to be able to do it all is not a specialist; that’s someone who just wants your business. Choose a trainer who has defined their specific niche, and isn’t afraid to turn down the opportunity to work with someone who doesn’t fit their profile of an ideal client.

I very rarely go to meet anyone for the first time without running their name through Google. It’s fascinating what you find. A decent and reputable personal trainer will have blog posts, testimonials and recommendations, quotes, online videos, interviews and possibly even a book, all of which you can find on their website or Google.

Not asking for testimonials and case studies Any good and reputable trainer will not only have case studies and testimonials on their website, but they will also offer you the chance to speak to clients so you can hear their experience firsthand. Some will insist upon it, to make sure that you are their target client, as well as the other way round.

Going with the trainer who offered their time for free It’s vitally important that whoever you work with places a high value on their time. When a trainer sets a reasonable price for their services, they are making a statement to the client that they value what they do, and are committed to 16 | SE22 - March 2016

Signing up for packages of five or ten sessions The days of selling packages based on a small number of sessions are long over. Making a major decision about your health and fitness is a longterm commitment and a conversation with a personal trainer should reflect that. It takes time to effect a change when working with any client; look for a trainer who offers monthly packages or is willing to create bespoke packages. Pets Corner

How to Socialise Your Puppy

N

ew puppy owners, of which there are many at the moment, are keen to own a well behaved dog and one of the things they will be advised is to “thoroughly socialise” their pet…the sooner the better. For this, and only this they are told, will teach their dog to be reliable around other dogs and to be the forever friendly, perfect family pet. In my view socialisation is a somewhat misunderstood term. Increasingly it seems to mean that you let your young puppy run around in a totally uncontrolled manner with all other dogs it meets, to practise its “social” skills including, jumping up, roughhousing, chasing and play biting. In effect, we are teaching our pups to associate the park with unfettered access to other dogs, no holds barred. This totally free approach means that the more naturally rambunctious pups may jump on the wrong dog; the classic scenario is a large breed pup launching itself at a small breed adult that minding its own business. The pup soon gets the shock of its life when the older dog turns and delivers a fierce drubbing. This can be the beginning of a fear of certain categories of dog and dog to dog aggression. The older dog may also develop a profound dislike of pups and so everyone is a loser. If we consider that most dogs were developed for a role that involved working for humans why are we training pups to pay greater attention to other dogs than to us? Imagine if every working dog broke off midway to run and play with bowzer in the next field? Pups from working lines learn on the job by copying the adults, who are focussing on their human. The domestic dog has been developed over aeons to work with us and listen to us…he is man’s best friend after all. Why then are we teaching him to transfer his allegiance to other dogs? In other parts of the world dogs can be walked freely and they mostly ignore each other, they are intent on their owners. Surely this is the way it should be? For sure, we should expose our

24 | SE22 - March 2016

pups to other dogs, they need to learn about them just as they need to learn about other humans, children, cars, buses…the list is endless. However, this is not the same as actively teaching and training our pups that interaction with other dogs is the pinnacle of their day and the raison d’etre for walking to the park. Why not make ourselves our pup’s first choice of playmate? I would love to see more owners playing with their pups in the park and mixing games with basic obedience. It is a joy when it happens but all too rare. In terms of developmental windows, pups learn most of their dog communication skills from mum and their siblings in the first 3-8 weeks of life. Further free access to other puppies thereafter arguably empowers them to perfect and hone hunting, fighting and mating techniques. That might be an exaggeration but puppy exposure to other puppies and dogs should be considered, controlled and carefully balanced with interactive owner play and training. Dogs are incredibly malleable and we reap what we sow. The key to good dog ownership and a well behaved dog is really quite simple, from day one make yourself the centre of your pup’s universe. Make the creation of that bond and the pup’s desire to listen to and please you at all times the absolute priority. View trips to the park as training, not freedom.

Last year, Harris Girls’ was in the top 1% of schools nationally for student progress, and has been in the top 3% for five years in a row.

“We’re committed to regular surveys of students and parents to give us another way of measuring how well we are doing,” said Principal, Jane Fletcher. “We’re always looking to improve.”

When asked if they were happy to come to school, around 98% of students agreed. Nearly 100% of students agreed that they learned a lot in lessons. Around 98% of parents said their child was happy to come to school.

“Mistura gave a powerful and nuanced performance,” said Sharon Kanolik, Participation Projects Manager at the Young Vic. “It was brilliant to see her confidence and performance skills grow during this project and we’d love to work with other students from Harris Girls’ in future.”

Mistura from year 10 played Lady Macbeth recently in a version of Macbeth staged by students at the Young Vic.

Red House Wednesday 23 March 11am-12.30pm Red House is an Arts and Crafts house codesigned in 1859 by the architect Philip Webb and the designer William Morris. It was built as a family home for the latter, and is recognised as one of the most important examples of 19th century British architecture still extant. It was constructed using Morris’ ethos on craftsmanship and artisan skills, and a number of Morris’ friends visited, most notably the PreRaphaelite painters Edward Burne- Jones and Dante Gabriel Rossetti, both of whom helped decorate the house.

Thursday 10 March: Displacements with Ben Rawlence 7.30pm Tickets are £6 and are fully redeemable against a purchase of City of Thorns. Over the course of four years, Ben Rawlence became a firsthand witness to a strange and desperate limboland. To the charity workers, Dadaab refugee camp is a humanitarian crisis; to the Kenyan government, it is a ‘nursery for terrorists’; to the western media, it is a dangerous no-go area; but to its half a million residents, it is their last resort. Among those s e e k i n g sanctuary there are Guled, a former child soldier who lives for football; Nisho, who scrapes an existence by pushing a wheelbarrow and dreaming of riches; Tawane, the indomitable youth leader; and schoolgirl Kheyro, whose future hangs upon her education. In City of Thorns, Rawlence interweaves the stories of nine individuals to show what life is like in the camp and to sketch the wider political forces that keep the refugees trapped there. Ben will share his stories of life in the camp, explaining why he wrote the book and what he thinks can be done to improve the lives of refugees around the world. Monday 14 March: The Barrys – the other Victorian

architectural dynasty 6.45-9pm

The Barrys – the other Victorian architectural dynasty Monday 14 March, 6.45 – 9.00pm, Dulwich College Dan Cruickshank explores the world of the Barry and Scott architectural dynasties in the 150th anniversary year of Charles Barry Jnr’s ‘New College’at Dulwich. The New Dulwich College was built on its 70 acre site on Dulwich Common in the 1860s. The main building was designed by Charles Barry Jnr, the eldest son of the architect of the Houses of Parliament, Sir Charles Barry, in a style which he called ‘Northern Italian of the Thirteenth Century’. Sir George Gilbert Scott was a prolific Victorian Gothic architect, and founder of a fantastically successful architectural dynasty. He has been called the ‘unsung hero of British architecture’ and his style touched every aspect of British life, although it was not always admired.

Charles Barry Jnr.

Dan Cruickshank will explore the two great Victorian dynastic architectural families in this lecture. The emphasis will be on Charles Barry Jnr who designed the room in which the lecture will be delivered. Writer, art historian, architectural consultant and broadcaster, Dan Cruickshank has made numerous history and culture programmes for the BBC.

Dulwich Hamlet FC - News

Hamlet to Host FC Assyria in Fundraising Event

O

n Wednesday 2nd March, the Club hope to see the local community out in force as we raise money for a extremely good cause with a match against FC Assyria. Hamlet have impressed the wider football community in recent years with a range of impressive initiatives, with last years game against Stonewall FC – promoting a message of Anti-Homophobia, being a leading example. After being approached by local people originally from Syria, Southwark Councillor Jasmine Ali approached the Supporters Trust to discuss a potential fundraising event. A collaborative effort between Jasmine, the clubs Football Committee and the Trust has seen the event come to fruition. FC Assyria play four rungs below Hamlet in Step Seven of the non-league pyramid and were set up in the 1960’s to represent Assyrian community of Ealing, West London. The Assyrian people mainly live in modern day Turkey, Iran, Iraq and Syria – with the recent violence in the region seeing many fleeing as refugees. All the money raised from the game will be split between two charities, Southwark Refugee Communities Forum and the British Red Cross Syria Appeal. Admission will be £5 for adults, £2 for concessions with under 12’s free so please do come down and show your support. We also have two key home fixtures this month as we enter the business end of the season. After the boundless optimism of our last update, the team have entered a slump in form during recent weeks. A glance at the table would have suggested that Hamlet were heading into a run of three games whereby a nine point haul wouldn’t be an unthinkable target. VCD Athletic, Lewes and Farnborough were the opposition, but three games and one point later – the team is suddenly looking much more vulnerable than it has this season. With Hampton & Richmond as well as East Thurrock pushing us back to third,

36 | SE22 - March 2016

and all the teams around Hamlet having games in hand – Dulwich desperately need to return to winning ways and find some form. It’s going to be a huge eight weeks as the season reaches its conclusion, Hamlet history is waiting to be made so get yourself down to Champion Hill and make sure you’re a part of it!

March Home Fixtures • Wednesday 2nd March – 7:45pm FC Assyria fundraising match. • Saturday 19th March – 3pm Burgess Hill Town • Monday 28th March – 3pm Tonbridge Angels Particularly in the winter months, please do keep an eye on the clubs website for fixture changes due to adverse weather or Cup commitments. www.pitchero.com/clubs/dulwichhamlet

Financial Matters

Britain gets a pay rise

E

ver since the Chancellor George Osbourne announced the introduction of a National Living Wage (NLW) last July, there has been constant debates across the country. Sometimes, these debates have almost reached boiling points. The Chancellor said, “Britain deserves a pay rise and Britain is getting a pay rise. …We need to move Britain from a low wages, high tax, high welfare economy to a high wages, low tax, low welfare economy.” Commentators may well think this was a script from the economic manual of our former Prime Minister, Tony Blair. For the announcement and the sentiments are difficult to fault but as usual these grand pronouncements are made without careful thought or reflection on their introduction or implications. In short, the Chancellor announced the introduction from 1st April 2016, of a National Living Wage (NLW) for adults aged 25 years and over. In principle, we all deserve a pay rise. However, is there no longer a north-south differential? Or is it time to head north to get more bang for our buck? The debate, arguments or battles have not centred on my desire to migrate north of Watford, but upon the age old problem between cost to employers and economic efficiency versus the gains by the low paid to reach or enjoy an acceptable basic standard of living. From 1st April every employee aged 25 years old (unless on the first year of an apprenticeship scheme) will be entitled to £7.20ph. In other words every employee aged 25 years and over currently on the National Minimum Wage of £6.70 will enjoy a 7.5% pay rise. Did the Chancellor plan to contribute to wage inflation in the first quarter of 2016-17? The government’s planned generosity goes even further. The government has instructed the Low Pay Commission that the minimum wage premium for over 25 year olds should reach 60% of median earnings by 2020. This would mean a rise to around £9 per hour by 2020. Despite this 7.5% pay award, the Living Wage Foundation (LWF) champions a living wage based on

40 | SE22 - March 2016

the cost of living. The LWF argue the UK Living Wage should be £8.25ph and £9.40ph in the capital. Whilst everyone welcomes and enjoys annual pay awards, especially 7.5% which dwarfs any measure of our current rates of inflation, some reflection is required to ponder on the holistic debate. The jubilation and celebration of such pay rises may be short lived. Small firms who are the engine of our economy expect to slow hiring and increase prices because of the new National Living Wage for over-25s, according to the Federation of Small Businesses. A Federation of Small Business (FSB) survey found 38% of small employers expect the new NLW of £7.20 an hour to negatively impact their business from 1st April 2016. In addition, 52% of these firms said they would put off recruiting new staff; and 50% expected to increase their prices as a result of the NLW being introduced. Only 6% of firms expressed a positive expectation on their business as a result of the introduction of the NLW. Despite all the economic benefits and good intentions in the Chancellor’s proposal to transform UK plc from a low wage to a higher wage economy, he has still yet to balance the conundrum set out by Carl Jung all those years ago; ‘the shoe that fits one person pinches another; there is no recipe for living that suits all cases.’ As employees and employers look forward to 1st April, only time will tell if the UK plc NLW will produce a win-win outcome or winners and losers.

SE22 Councillors

Crappiest Roads

W

hich East Dulwich roads and pavements do you think are most in need of being renewed. East Dulwich councillors have an annual allocation of £76,190 for such highway renewals. To replace both pavements and highway costs around £1,000 per 1m length. So this money won’t go far. We’ve had requests for Rodwell Road, Landcroft Road. Lordship Lane pavements are tricky as renewals are really painful for local businesses. Please tell us your priorities: tcllrjamesbarber@gmail.com

Cleaner, Greener, Safer Every year since 2002 we’ve had capital funds devolved to ward councillors to make their ward cleaner, greener and safer. Crime Prevention Fund £10,000 – more gating alleyways, property marking kits, motorbike ground anchors and the like. East Dulwich Trees £10,000 – more street trees, this feels like a losing battle with Southwark council policies these days but it has never been so important to soak up CO2 and make our area greener. Worlingham Road Junction £10,000 – the junction of Worlingham Road with East Dulwich Road is an accident hot spot and we hope to relief this by having an entry treatment where the road is raised to pavement height. Goose Green School raised flower bed £2,920 – enabling extra-curricular activities growing things to make the schools grounds more attractive. New Street Benches £3,730 – three new benches for soaking up the atmosphere/taking a pause getting around. Barry House £10,000 – Barry House is a refugee hostel serving SE England. This money will smarten up the frontage. What idea do you have to make our area better?

Shocking Food Hygiene Food hygiene is critically important to our communities health. Shocking outbreaks of fatal and life changing illnesses can happen from poor food hygiene but we can’t all inspect every kitchen, shop and butcher. So we all rely upon Southwark Council to inspect and rate premises for us. This is failing us. Repeat visits are not frequent enough. Businesses can also request repeat visit when they think they’ve improved how they operate. Of the 370 food rated premises in SE22, four have only 1* meaning major improvement is needed, 19 have 2* where improvement is necessary, and 45 have 3* rating where they’re generally satisfactory. The remainder are either good or very good. If you’d like to see these scores and how each local SE22 business is rated at their last inspection visit: http://tinyurl.com/SE22food

Boundary Review Every dozen years or so, an independent review of political boundaries takes place. The initial view of our area has been issued. The proposal is to slice up East Dulwich ward and create a new Goose Green ward centred on Lordship Lane main shopping high street and a Dulwich Hills ward including Barry Road/Crystal Palace Road and areas South and South-East of it. Bizarrely Dulwich Hills are a historic name for the area around Sunray Avenue. We hope to persuade everyone that they should be called East Dulwich and East Dulwich Hills respectively. The areas and names are important as the more coherent they are the greater focus councillors can bring to one area rather than bits of many areas. Together they would cover over 90% of the East Dulwich area. If you would like to see the detail and give your input see: http://tinyurl.com/wardreview

Freedom Pass If you have a Freedom Pass giving free bus travel it will expire 31 March. You should have received information on how to renew passes. If not you either renew online or as a last resort let me know and I’ll get the correct form to you. 44 | SE22 - March 2016

“I have been advertising in SE22 and SE23 magazines for over 8 years and find it not only a great read, but also a really useful tool for local marketing and a proven way of attracting local business. I can highly recommend Angela and SE magazines and I remain a loyal client!” Peter Bennison, P. M Bennison Heating Ltd ‘’As a relatively new business set-up, I have advertised in two editions of SE22; and as a result have received five new clients (four direct, and one referral). I’m very happy with this response, and Angela provides an excellent, efficient service, and couldnyt be more helpful! Many thanks.’’ Lynne Walsh, Flourish Gardening “I recently had double glazed windows fitted in my bedroom, a job very well done in every way by Bespoke Windows. They look pleasing and work very well. I found this company in SE22 Magazine, a useful and informative local monthly publication.” Dotty Todd “SE21 and SE22 magazines have been great for us in connecting with the local community and attracting people to our events. More importantly our ads have brought forward volunteers who are interested in becoming befriender, group helper or driver – roles we need to fill more and more to help alleviate isolation and loneliness in older people of Southwark. Thank you SEMags for all your support – keep up the good work!” Jennie Linnett, Dulwich Helpline & Southwark Churches Care.

Garden Talk

The Formidable Ferns

F

erns are an intriguing, versatile and very useful group of plants for which my love has grown over the years. I couldn’t contemplate making a garden without them these days. They are very adaptable plants and come very handy for these dry shade corners where not much else would grow. They are the perfect solution to underplant trees, to add texture and movement to shade or semi shade borders and to soften a path or a patio’s edge. They evoque walks in woodland’s dappled shade, and somehow speak to us of a time when the world was densely wooded and wild things roamed. They also bring a sense of calm, I’m not sure why. Always plant in a group as they would in the wild, as they look best this way but also will thrive by improving each others growing conditions. Some ferns don’t mind the sun too much but don’t put them in sunny borders, they will look out of place and their delicate foliage will get scorched. Deciduous ferns look unsightly in autumn so do mix with evergreen ones but don’t exclude them altogether as watching their fronds unfurling before your eyes every spring is a formidable spectacle not to be missed.

My Favourite Evergreen Ferns Blechnum spicant - Perfect to underplant pine trees and conifers as they like acid soil. Dryopteris affinis “Cristata” - A cultivar of the native male fern, Dryopteris affinis, found in woodlands in wetter parts of Britain, this is a handsome, shuttlecock fern that keeps its leaves almost all year. Polystichum proliferum - A native of Britain, with soft, dark green fronds that emerge upright before unfurling and falling open. Either cut back the old foliage in early January to allow space for spring bulbs, or leave them in place until April when the new fronds appear. Asplenium scolopendrium - Known as Harts tongue ferns, they need a cool shady corner to thrive. In the wild they are seen growing in crevices in rocks and stone walls with very little compost.

My Favourite Deciduous Ferns Osmunda regalis or Royal fern - also called sometimes flowering fern due the appearance of its fertile fronds. 46 | SE22 - March 2016

Dryopteris filix femina - A native, male fern found naturally in moist woodlands around the UK. This large, handsome fern has feathery, green fronds which form a distinctive, shuttlecock shape and turn coppery in autumn. Athyrium filix femina, or lady fern - is a graceful fern with feathery and lacy, more delicate fronds than its male counterpart. Dryopteris wallichiana - A tough, hardy fern that is native to the Himalayas. In spring, it produces bright green, shuttlecock-like fronds on upright, hairy stems, up to 90cm high. Less fine in appearance than many other ferns, it nonetheless makes a dramatic statement in a woodland garden or under deciduous trees. Dicksonia antartica or tree fern - are great to add drama or introduce a bit of exotic to your garden. They are very slow growing however and very expansive, require winter protection but are worth it in the right place.

The Winning Combinations Here are some tried and tested winning plants combos: Matteucia struttoptheris is a great punctuation within a carpet of Asarum europaeum. Osmunda regalis and gunneras in bog gardens in large gardens. Blechnum spicant leathery glossy fronds compliment Pachysandra terminalis glossy leaves to form an elegant evergreen groundcover. Athyrium filix femina creates a perfect foil for Geranium “Blue Johnson”. Barbara Samitier - Garden Designer www.barbarasamitiergardens.co.uk

The Last Word – Lawrence Roullier White Christmas Eve we were open. A big deal serving Oscar nominated actress in your first week!

Where are you to be found on Saturday?

The stalls on North Cross Road are a favourite of mine and I love exploring Peckham where there is always something exciting and ingenious happening.

What is your favourite place to eat?

We are so spoiled for choice but I love Sunday lunches in the House of Tippler – Tim does the best Martinis – and Pedler is a passion of mine. I love trying new ones though and cannot wait to check out The Habit in Nunhead.

The best kept secret...

The mausoleum in Dulwich Picture Gallery is a nook that no one seems to know about. Sometimes the main gallery can be heaving and hidden away, just feet from the visitors, is this little sanctuary of calm.

Where’s your favourite place to walk?

I walk everywhere, I love walking over One Tree Hill to Honor Oak and up to Horniman’s for the amazing view from the bandstand.

When I want to relax... In December Lawrence Roullier White celebrated a 10 years of his lifestyle store on Lordship Lane. Which may seem a longtime to some, but not when you know his traceable family have lived in Peckham and East Dulwich since the 1780’s.

How long have you lived in the area?

I have lived here all my life. I was born in Camberwell where my parents rented, they bought their first home in East Dulwich.

What has changed most during that time?

In the warmer months I walk to Brockwell Park for an early morning swim at the Lido. I do yoga at Yogarise in the Bussey Building.

What is your favourite shop?

I love them all, we are so lucky with all our independent shops, I do love a bookshop though and I pass Rye Books every morning on my way to work, I say hello to Alastair and Bert the dog.

And the last thing you bought there?

A signed company of the Lady in the Van – I gave to my friend who is an Alan Bennett fanatic.

The area just keeps getting better and better, I think the shops and bars and restaurants are now amongst the best in London.

Best bargain you’ve ever landed..

What do you most value about the area/street you live in?

My perfect holiday..

I am so lucky to have a house on the Peckham side of Peckham Rye looking over the Common. I am so privileged to have that as my view.

Not bought locally, but Lola, our British Blue, has been 12 years of fun, well worth the price tag. I would love to have a week with no work to do and spend it properly discovering this area – I always seem to be rushing somewhere or other so a week off at home with absolutely nothing to do would be lovely.

The most famous person you’ve met?

We get many, many really lovely and charming ones in the shop and I have met a lot. Probably the most star struck I have been, however, was when Leslie Caron bought her Christmas presents on the first 48 | SE22 - March 2016
