The Beautiful Houses of Dulwich

love Dulwich; to my mind it is one of the most beautiful areas of London. I think it is the captivating combination of serene calmness, quiet sophistication and the cerebral atmosphere of a university town, accentuated with its fine schools, art gallery, local amenities and community life. The neighbourhood offers locals and visitors alike an eclectic mix of the most stunning properties in South London from the grand Georgian mansions, the palatial Victorian and Edwardian houses, the preand post-war homes, to the lovely hidden cottages tucked away down secluded alleyways. One cannot fail to be impressed by the distinctiveness and diversity of the elegant properties that make up the unique residential district around Dulwich. The other evening I was strolling around the village just as twilight fell. The homes lining the streets suddenly proffered a passer-by a quick, tantalising glimpse through the warm glow of tungsten lit windows into the private worlds of their occupants. As I peeped through the glazed windowpanes into the concealed private lives behind these enclosed walls, my curiosity was challenged: are these homes really like I am imagining them to be? I also wondered how many other people have shared this secret desire of mine to learn more about the histories of these houses, the lives of the people who live in them and what the interior spaces and decor of these amazing properties are really like inside. That’s when I had an idea. Why not write a monthly article under the title ‘Step Inside Dulwich’ and have it published as a regular feature in our local SE Magazine. The next morning I eagerly telephoned Angela Burgess, the magazine’s editor, and invited her to lunch at the congenial Gail’s Artisan Bakery and Cafe, situated in the heart of Dulwich Village to discuss my idea and ask if she would be interested in such a feature. To my amazement and delight she agreed. So here I am now, nervously writing my very first column to introduce myself, share my thoughts with you and ask for your help and

assistance. I am looking to recruit any readers who would be interested in having their home reviewed for the column and to contact me for further details. We are keen to take a ‘peek through the keyhole’ of any property that has an interesting story to tell. We want to have an informal chat with the occupants, to discover the history of the house, what they can tell us about its past and present role in Dulwich life and showcase the distinctive interiors that exist. I hope to include properties that have been recently renovated as well as those properties that may still contain some original structural features and layouts. Other topics I also intend to cover in this new column will include insights into the world of interior design, reviews on the latest design trends, as well as tips, hints and ideas to help you create your own distinctive home styling.

s a new month begins, the first signs of spring are slowly starting to appear around Dulwich. Butterflies are in the air and daffs are in bloom - a sure sign that winter is almost over! However, the freezing cold snap we experienced in February is set to return in March, so it could be a while yet before we put our big coats back up in the loft. After hibernating for most of January, it felt good to be out and about a bit more last month. I had dinner with friends at The Lordship, which I really recommend for hearty homemade food and good wine. We went on a Thursday night and there was a great atmosphere. I also went to Toasted for a friend’s birthday drinks one Friday night in February and it was absolutely buzzing in there too. Although after a month off the sauce I had forgotten how much it hurts the morning after. Especially when you throw children and half term into the mix! I fear much of my good work at the beginning of the year was undone by the end of this short month. I am hoping to relax more in March, but with SE22’s 12th birthday drinks inked firmly in my diary as well as Wine Club, Red Nose Day antics and the loss of a whole hour when the clocks spring forward, true relaxation might only be achieved on Mother’s Day… if my husband remembers! We haven’t managed to visit The Robot Zoo at the Horniman Museum yet, but this interactive exhibition looks amazing. It’s on until October, so there will be plenty of opportunities to see it. I am even tempted to book tickets to Robot Zoo Late, which is an adult only evening event with talks, performances and a chance to take control of the giant animatronic beasts.

The Dulwich Society Garden Group’s spring gardens talk this month is on ‘The Chelsea Experience’ and looks very interesting. It’s with Matt Keightley, who was awarded a Silver Gilt Medal at the 2014 and 2015 RHS Chelsea Flower Show for his Show Gardens. Over at the Hop Scotch Café Bar in Honor Oak, The Windmills Jazz Quartet will be playing an intimate gig. Entry is free and the band is even offering a free drink to the first couple to get up and dance! Courgette, Fennel & Kohlrabi Salad Serves 2-4 as a starter or side dish Riverford Cook Anna is a big fan of using courgettes, fennel and kohlrabi raw, so this simple salad pairs the crunchy raw veg with citrus and spice. The fennel seeds accentuate the fennel bulb’s natural flavour, while the caraway is a good match for the brassica flavour of the kohlrabi. If you don’t have all the spices just use those which you do. Cut the veg as thinly as you can (or use a mandolin).

Ingredients • 1 courgette • 1 fennel bulb, trimmed and fronds reserved • 1 kohlrabi, peeled • several large mustard leaves, or other peppery salad leaves, e.g. rocket

For The Vinaigrette • ¾ tsp fennel seeds • ¼ tsp caraway seeds • juice of ∞ lemon • juice of ∞ orange • 5 tbsp extra virgin olive oil • salt and black pepper

Method Halve the courgette lengthways and slice each half crossways on the diagonal as thinly as you can. Quarter and core the fennel, then slice as thinly as you can. Cut the kohlrabi into matchsticks. Lay the mustard leaves on top of each other, roll up like a cigar and cut into thin ribbons. Make the vinaigrette by grinding the seeds with a pestle and mortar

and then mixing in the citrus juices and enough olive oil to balance their acidity. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Toss all ingredients together, check for seasoning and serve garnished with the reserved fennel fronds. Find more recipes at www.riverford.co.uk/recipes

Your Gardening To-Do List Things are getting busy in the garden – here’s what to do this month Fertilise and mulch • After weeding, sprinkle soil with an organic fertilser, such as chicken pellets or fish, blood and bone and lightly fork around trees and shrubs. Give roses a special rose feed or a balanced fertiliser. • Cover bare soil with a 5cm layer of organic matter such as well rotten manure to stop it losing water as weather warms up, watering first if it’s dry. A mulch suppresses weeds and looks smart too.

Move and plant • If there’s a shrub that’s outgrown its spot, now’s the time move it. Take as large a root ball as you can, drag it over to its new home on a plastic sheet, add well rotted compost to the hole, water it well and it should take off. •This is the last chance to plant bare root trees, roses and shrubs as those little hair roots need to be making their way into the soil by now. • Plant new climbers, by digging a hole, 22cm away from walls and fences so that the plant is not in a dry ‘rain shadow’. • Create new plants by dividing clumps of over grown summer perennials. Tease the lifted plant apart with two forks back to back and don’t be nervous about a few roots breaking.

Prune and tidy • Cut down overgrown perennials and grasses to make way for new growth. • Prune your roses. With sharp secateurs, remove dead, diseased and crossing stems, then prune flowering wood back by a third. Cut to 6mm above an outward facing healthy bud– and wear gloves! • Cut down established cornus (dogwood) to the base to encourage colourful winter stems. • Tackle overgrown climbers now - new buds mean you can see where the stems are dead. Honeysuckle, ivies, rambling roses and winter flowering jasmine can be pruned hard. Summer flowering jasmine can also be pruned by taking out the main stem or two to the ground. • Prune late flowering clematis – such as Jackmannii

(Group 3) by cutting them 23-24cm from the ground, to just above a healthy bud – easy! • Deadhead hydrangeas before new growth appears and cut to a third of last year’s growth.

Sow and grow • Grow scented sweet peas by make a bamboo wigwam, and planting two seeds at 30cm intervals and 1cm deep in situ. Young plants may need help before tendrils twine themselves around the support.

Plant and deadhead bulbs • Snowdrops rarely grow well from dry bulbs so divide or plant them while they’re still green. • Plant summer flowering bulbs such as gladiolus and lilies in a sunny spot. • Deadhead daffodils and let the foliage die back to encourage new flower buds to form inside the bulb.

Cut and feed your lawn • Start mowing your lawn for first time, just not too short at first. •If you’re feeling energetic, aerate your lawn by making holes with a fork 10cm deep and 20cm apart. • Give the lawn a feed of chicken manure pellets towards the end of the month – ideally when the lawn is damp. Finally, watch out for slugs. They love juicy new growth and will be coming out in wet weather for a nibble.

Triple Ginger Cheesecake with Poached Rhubarb

t’s that time of year when I fall in love with pink again, even though it isn’t the best colour for my complexion. Beautiful, pink, forced Yorkshire Rhubarb at it’s best! Serves 8-12 Preparation time 30-45 minutes. Cooking time approximately 30 minutes in total plus chilling minimum 3 hours.

Ingredients for the base • • • •

100g Duchy Original Stem Ginger Biscuits or Ginger Nuts Finely Crushed 50g Digestive Biscuits 60g butter, melted 20cm (8”) spring form tin, greased

Ingredients for the filling • • • • • • • • •

4000g forced rhubarb cut into 2.5cm batons 50g caster sugar (for the rhubarb) 1 tbsp grated stem ginger 1 tbsp stem ginger syrup from the jar 800g cream cheese (or full-fat soft cheese such as Philadelphia) 75ml double cream 200g caster sugar (for the filling mixture) 1 vanilla pod, split in half lengthways and seeds scraped out 2 whole eggs + 2 egg yolks

Method: 1) For the base, place the biscuits and butter in a bowl, stir well and then press into the base of the tin. Place in the fridge to chill. 2) Prepare the rhubarb. Put 50g caster sugar, the stem ginger syrup and 1tablespoon of water in a wide shallow pan and bring to a gentle simmer. Add the rhubarb and poach gently for 10 minutes or until the rhubarb is just cooked when tested with the point of a knife. Do not allow the rhubarb to go mushy. Place a sieve over a bowl and drain the rhubarb well. Reserve the juice. 3) Whilst the rhubarb and the base are cooling prepare the filling, preheat the oven to 200°C/180°C fan/Gas Mark 6. 4) Put the cream cheese, cream, sugar, vanilla seeds, eggs and egg yolks in a clean blender or food 14 | SE22 - March 2017

processor and blend until smooth and mixed – do not blend for more than a minute, otherwise the mixture might split if it overheats. 5) Now scatter the grated stem ginger over the biscuit base, and then evenly spread half of your drained poached rhubarb on top. 6) Pour the filling mixture over the rhubarb in the cake frame or tin, then tap the frame a couple of times to remove any trapped air bubbles 7) Bake the cheesecake in the oven for 22–25 minutes. Once cooked, the top will have coloured golden brown slightly and will have risen (souffléd) slightly, but it will sink back down once set. The cheesecake will also still have a slight wobble in the centre when it’s ready (once chilled, this will have set perfectly). 8) While the cheesecake is cooking, place the reserved rhubarb juices in a small pan and cook over a gentle heat so that it reduces to a thick syrup. Leave to cool. 9) Remove from the oven and leave the cheesecake to cool at room temperature for 30 minutes, then chill in the fridge for a minimum of 3 hours before cutting. The chilled baked cheesecake will keep in the fridge for up to 3 days. 10) Cut the chilled cheesecake into 8-12 even portions. Decorate with the remaining poached rhubarb and spoon a little of the syrup over each slice.

Consistency & why it’s important How to get consistency with your health, fitness & nutrition

consider my own routine to be very consistent. My typical week will involve twice weekly 1-1 boxing sessions, a run twice a week and tennis at least twice a week. In between, I will do a Tabata workout at home and I use a foam roller every night in front of the television. I rarely defer from this routine, and my nutrition is also fairly typical. For breakfast I’ll have a green smoothie (kale, spinach, banana, apple, chia seeds and coconut water blended). Lunch is generally a quiche and salad and dinner is predominantly vegetables (green and roasted) with a piece of fish or chicken. Having a consistent routine helps me to conserve energy, for two reasons. It gets rid of the internal monologue that takes place – i.e. “I ought to go to the gym tonight but I could go tomorrow” “I know I ought to cook tonight but it’s easier to get a take-out” “When shall I fit in a run this week, I’m busy all week” This is draining, and a waste of energy; by having a consistent routine, you can remove the need for this tiresome chatter. Having a routine gives me more energy, because I’m maintaining my fitness levels. Developing a good level of physical fitness takes time, and it’s much easier to maintain than gain. So once you’ve built up some fitness, put in the effort to retain it. I’m also strict about not booking anything instead of the boxing sessions. If I have to be away that day, I’ll move the session to another day that week. If I’m away for the week, I’ll catch up when I’m back. Also, I pay for sessions on a monthly standing order, so it’s ‘use it or lose it’, and therefore I’m incentivised to book them in. The other thing I’ll do is adapt. If I’m away, I’ll do the same intensity of workout wherever I am.

Environment drives performance is one of my mantras, and this also helps enormously with consistency. Keeping your environment – home and work – clean, tidy and efficiently set up will help you to maintain good habits. Plan ahead, be prepared and know where things are. From a nutritional standpoint, you’ll find consistency when your body finds its natural set point. Set point refers to your body’s natural weight; it’s easy to maintain, and the hormones ghrelin (hunger) and leptin (satiety) are balanced and working well. You’ll eat when you’re hungry, stop when you’re full and you’ll maintain a steady body composition. Your body will naturally find it’s set point if you have a consistent and balanced fitness and nutrition program, and avoid disruptors such as sugar, alcohol, nicotine, excess caffeine, poor sleep, chronic stress and some prescription drugs. The key to maintaining consistency is to normalise whatever it is you’re doing. Rather than following a special diet, or signing up to a short term program, think of health, fitness and nutrition as something you do because you’re alive.

Pet Valentine’s Pampers

his could have been a cheesy article about the many gifts you can buy for your pet for Valentine’s Day. It might have involved mention of glittery collars and expensive dog hotels but such things actually cater for the human ego, our pets could not care less how much a toy costs or how chic an accessory looks. There are much better ways to show our pet how much we care for them and that will make a genuine difference to their wellbeing. After all, what greater expression of love could there be? So if you really want to treat your pet here is how.

1) Tellington TTouch. Originally devised to calm horses this specialist form of massage is heavenly for cats, dogs and other companion animals. Learning to use the classic hand -circle- and- a -quarter TTouches will not only relax your pet but also improve behaviour and general wellbeing. 2) Homemade treats. Why not ditch shop- bought treats and make your own? The benefits are in knowing exact ingredients, reducing overall costs, and you can make a large batch and freeze and thaw for use as you want. If you want to push the boat out for your dog, make hard-baked garlic chicken. Cut up five boneless breasts of chicken into quarter inch cubes. Cover and mix well with one desert spoon of olive oil and a tiny squeeze of garlic puree. Bake in a medium oven until golden brown and completely hard (2-3 hours). Once cool keep in an air tight container. For the puss get 2 cans of sardines or mackerel in oil (Do not drain). 2/3 cups cooked rice. 1 tablespoon pureed, cooked chicken livers. 1/4 cup chopped parsley. Combine all ingredients and mix well. Shape into balls of desired size. These treats may be stored in the refrigerator for up to three days, and can also be frozen. 26 | SE22 - March 2017

3) Trick training Boredom is a major cause of stress in all pets. Whether you own a budgie, a rabbit, a cat or dog, consider trick training as an additional way to stimulate and work your pet’s brain. However, especially where dogs are concerned, trick training should never be a substitute for basic training. Teaching dogs to do high fives, to crawl or play dead are better known but effective ways of using his brain but cats may also enjoy training, find out more at www.entirelypets.com/teachpetricks Budgie owners may be interested in learning about hand training and teaching their bird to talk, see http://budgieplace.com/taming. 4) Learn about pet communication. Communication is a two way thing. Animals that feel misunderstood may become stressed and fractious. Owners that take time to educate themselves about pet communication will reap the benefits. As it is February we can remind ourselves about the different ways animals express affection for their owners. Cats may deliver a gentle head-butt or roll over to expose their belly. Be warned though, although your cat is giving a display of affection this is not an invitation to ‘rub my tummy’. Instead gently stroke your cat’s cheek or under his chin. Rabbits may bump an ankle with their nose, stretch up for attention or even give a little lick. Dogs greet friends with gentle, squinty eyes, a relaxed open mouth and sweeping tail wag. The Redevelopment of Champion Hill

ulwich Hamlet Supporters Trust (DHST) hosted a joint meeting with the Football Committee on Monday 20 February to urge supporters to make their views heard regarding Southwark Council’s refusal to take a decision on the proposed redevelopment of Champion Hill. The proposed redevelopment of Champion Hill offers the best chance to secure the long-term sustainability of Dulwich Hamlet Football Club and protect its future by placing ownership into the hands of supporters. It provides a new ground and leisure facility that will be accessible to the local community, including local schools. Before the meeting Alex Crane, the new Chair of DHST said “It is imperative that the Planning Inspectorate understands the wide backing the scheme has from the community”. He continued, “the future of our Football Club is being put into severe jeopardy and will be put at risk if supporters and the local community more broadly do not act to back the scheme”. The match is being organised by The Street Football Association (SFA) which, as part of Centrepoint, uses street football to positively transform the lives of homeless and socially excluded adults. Working with professional football clubs, the SFA give men and women the inspirational opportunity to represent their country or a top team. For the game, SFA players who have represented England in The Homeless World Cup will join celebrities and former professionals on a unique team sheet to take on the Isthmian League Premier Division team. The Centrepoint squad includes: Rappers Wretch 32 and Example, comedians Rob Beckett and Tom Rosenthal, Nottingham Forest cult hero Jason Lee, TalkSPORT’s Perry Groves and some exciting secret names. The game kicks off at 19:45 and all proceeds taken at the game will go directly to Centrepoint to support homeless young people. Spring Budget RIP v Spring Cleaning

eware the Ides (15th) of March” was the soothsayer’s message to Caesar warning him of his death. Alas in 2017 we have our own live version of Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar albeit, beware the 8th March. This marks the death of the Spring Budget that generations have grown up with. To some of us it is like losing a beloved family member. Despite it being the end of the Spring Budget, it does not mark the end of some spring cleaning of our tax affairs as we approach the 5th April. There is still time to consider four key last minute personal tax planning opportunities before we shut the door on 2016-17.

government provided the funds are used to buy a first home.

Pensions

An open opportunity still exists for any married or civil partners with unused personal allowance in 2016-17 to transfer £1,100 to their spouse or partner. To qualify the transferor’s income must be less than £11,000 and the transferee’s income should lie between £11,000 - £43,000. Whilst it may not be a material sum £220 of tax savings is always going to be better than no action at all. Therefore all married couples and civil partners should review the existence of any unused personal allowances in 2016-17.

There are limits to how much can be invested in a pension scheme before a tax charge is payable. To qualify for personal tax relief, a pension contribution must be made by or on behalf of a relevant UK individual. Tax relief for pension contributions are restricted by reference to net relevant earnings and the annual allowance of £40,000 per year for those with income of less than £150,000. There is a minimum annual allowance of £10,000 per year, in most cases, for individuals with annual income of £210,000 or more. There are complex rules applicable to individuals with ‘threshold income’ above £110,000 and, therefore, seeking pension advice is important. In addition, there is a lifetime allowance which is currently £1 million, and it is possible to carry forward any unused allowances from the previous three tax years. Pension investors over 55, are able to withdraw a tax-free lump sum or start taking pension drawdown even if they are still working. Therefore as part of retirement planning, taxpayers may wish to review their pension arrangements.

Tax Credits

Despite the relative low interest rates available on cash ISAs, individuals who are 18 or over can invest up to £15,240 in an ISA. Growth, income and withdrawals from an ISA are free of income tax and capital gains tax. The interest rates on a cash ISAs may not seem very attractive, however taxpayers should not forget that the £15,240 is also applicable to share ISAs whether managed or self-investing . Minors can invest up to £4,080 in a Junior ISA. A recent addition to the ISA portfolio is, Help to Buy ISAs which allows individuals over the age of 16 buying their first home to save up to £200 per month into an account. Buyers can also deposit a lump sum of up to £1,000 when they set up their account. The money will earn interest and will also qualify for a 25% bonus (up to £3,000) from the

Spring is nearly here

n a couple of weeks time, parts of East Dulwich should come alive with lots of Cherry Blossom giving us some of my favorite vistas. Parts of Melbourne Grove near the station are particularly beautiful from this. The idea of planting Cherry Blossom trees, emulating the Japnese Cherry Blossom festivals, came from former councillor Robin Crookshank Hilton. Thanks Robin.

Victory For several years now we’ve been fighting against 25m of double yellow lines being painted whenever residents want to have a new drive way. We had succeeded in having this policy reversed for non A & B roads and have now succeeded in having it reversed for Barry Road a B road. But we now need to get some of those 25m of double yellow lines removed from drives that were installed while this policy applied to them being built. What’s particularly annoying is the fact this was totally avoidable if ward councillors had been allowed to decide the matter solely rather than decisions from the council HQ being implemented without local influence. The fight continues.

Air Pollution This winter we’ve had appalling bad air pollution events. Just 5 days into 2017 the legal limits for air pollution for the whole year were breached. We know this is leading to over ten thousand premature deaths in London per year. Or around 40 premature deaths in East Dulwich/SE22 each year. And in the Autumn significant air pollution data withheld and hidden by former Mayor of London Boris Johnson was finally released showing air pollution has been known to be this bad in London for some years. This has led to the Congestion Charging Zone this October having an added air pollution charge or Toxic £10 T-Charge being introduced. Broadly this applies for motor vehicles built before 2005. Some vehicles built 2005-2008 are also toxic enough to attract this charge. To find out more and whether your car is included visit - https://goo.gl/P0k4ez. The plan is that in 2019 this T-charge will be extended to include everywhere within the North

and for us more importantly the South circular. This will impact all of SE22. So if you have a motor vehicle registered on or before 2008 you will need to either replace it with a much less polluting vehicle or not use it week days 7.30am-6pm by then. But what really surprised me about these air pollution events was King’s College London stating “We think about half of the peak was from wood smoke” - https://goo.gl/xxHaRJ. With minimal winds the air pollution from wood burning stoves hangs around accumulating. Most of London is within Smoke Control Areas. All of SE22 is within such an area so using wood burning stoves is illegal here. Smoke free fuels are ok. But this problem is especially acute on days without strong winds.

Kerbside Strategy Consultation Southwark Council is consulting about agreeing a strategy for all 650km of roads across Southwark. Some good features I think in it about promoting cycle parking but it also promotes with no evidence placing lots of double yellow lines at junction on roads with no crashes. This strategy will have a huge impact with time on how Southwark looks and feels and I would encourage you to take a look and give your feedback. You can find it here https://goo.gl/yHReM8

ulwich Symphony Orchestra is a local, longestablished community orchestra of highly dedicated members and a registered charity.The DSO’s Spring concert at the beautiful All Saints Church SE21, features local soprano Ruth Holton who is renowned for her recordings of Bach cantatas and oratorios. She has toured Germany, England and America in a series of recitals marking CPE Bach's 300th anniversary and is singing Howells Hymnus Paradisi and the Odes to St Cecilia by Purcell and Handel in the Three Choirs Festival in Worcester this summer. Ruth is also the organist and Director of Music at All Saints Church where she has directed Bach's St John Passion and the Cantata Sleepers wake. She also directs Sing4All, a community choir for older people in Herne Hill. Ruth will be singing the highly admired and gloriously sweeping Four Last Songs by Richard Strauss; a wonderful marriage of soprano and orchestra in a passionate and poetic collection, completed in 1948 a year before Strauss’ death at 85 years old. The songs are suffused with calm, acceptance and completeness. In contrast, the orchestra will play Dmitri Shostakovich’s Symphony No.10; written after Stalin’s death, the composer described the

Symphony as, “a musical portrait of Stalin, roughly speaking” and can be read as a comment on the Stalinist era. Finally, ‘not yet a breach...but an expansion’ by contemporary composer Mark Wilderspin which was originally written for St Paul's Girls' School Symphony Orchestra and performed by them in 2012, acts as a charming musical bridge between the other two pieces.
