Welcome to SE22 As you can see from the cover, I am celebrating 19 years of SE22! I still love putting the magazine together as much now as I did back in 2005. The magazine has changed over the years, but I am delighted to see that it still has a place in the local community. As usual I have rounded up all the great events taking place in and around Dulwich. The events pages start on page 6. March is proving to be a busy month for events, so we have a fantastic eight pages of online and in person events happening in and around Dulwich. Please do check any event before turning up to make sure that they are still going ahead. Remember to check out www.arounddulwich.co.uk too as many events get added after I have gone to print. You can often find out more details online too. Our local football team Dulwich Hamlet FC have sent in their monthly update on page 10. The Last Word goes to Sarah Taylor. As well as organising the popular Pexmas events, Sarah has just taken over as director of the Dulwich Festival. Find out more on page 32. Thank you to all the readers and local businesses who have supported the magazine for the past 18 years, it means a huge amount to me. Until next time. Happy Easter!

he business end of the season is just round the corner and as we hurtle madly into March, Spring brings plenty of chances to cheer on your Hamlet sides, home and away. As things warm up on all fronts, first up it’s a trip down memory lane with an away fixture back at Imperial Fields, our temporary home for the bitter exile of 2018. The Men’s team face Kingstonian there on Saturday 2nd March. After that there are back to back home games at Champion Hill to enjoy: against Whitehawk on Saturday 9th and Lewes on Saturday 16th; before buckets and spades down at Bognor for the away jaunt to Bognor Regis Town on Saturday 23rd, as Spring finally arrives. The men’s month ends with the Easter weekend double of the visit of Billericay Town to Dulwich on Saturday 30th, before an away trip to our friends at Carshalton Athletic on Easter Monday, April 1st for all you pink ‘n’ blue Fools. Meanwhile, early in the month, our Women’s first team has a huge date in the diary with the visit of Dartford to Champion Hill for the semi-final of the League Cup. Dulwich recently went ding-dong with Dartford in a top of the table clash which finished with a brilliant 5-2 win, so hopes are high for the

same result and the chance to lift silverware this season. Gather at the Hill on Sunday 3rd March to join the Pepper Army in cheering The Hamlet into the final. After that there’s an away trip for the women to Ashford United on Sunday 10th, before two more home games in the league this month, against Aylesford on Sunday 17th and Sutton United on Sunday 24th. And to compete the March matches our Women’s Reserves take on Richmond Park on Sunday 10th and Whyteleafe on Sunday 17th at St Olave’s and St Saviour’s Sports Ground. Women’s Sunday fixtures tend to kick off at 2pm and men’s Saturday games at 3pm, but do check the club website or social media channels for all the latest news, including any changes or additional match action. Spring Containers for Early Colour Garden Talk with Janine Winlaw | Instagram @janinewinlaw

A

lthough there may still be frosts and cold snaps to come, on a sunny clear day, it does feel like spring is on its way. If you didn’t get round to planting spring bulbs, or you’re waiting patiently for your daffodils to pop up, why not inject a little spring cheer into your garden by planting up containers with pretty seasonal gems. You’ll find lots to tempt you at your local garden centre such as chionodoxa, Iris reticulata, crocus varieties, muscari in white, pale and dark blue and stunning Fritillaria meleagris. Primroses, such as the delicate pale yellow native Primula vulgaris, or polyanthus planted in pots will bring spring right up to near the house. Alpines such as saxifrage look pretty too in a window box or in small pots on the window ledge. In terms of colour, blue, purple and yellow such as Narcissus‘Tete a Tete’ are a classic spring

12 | SE22 - March 2024

combination. White is also pretty at this time of year and goes with anything, especially fresh green. Otherwise, harmonise colours such as pinks, purples and blues or limit yourself to three colours such as Add Ferns for foliage as well as plants such as bergenia which are useful for both foliage and flowers at this time of year. Camelias with their evergreen waxy leaves and showy flowers in whites, pinks or reds are wonderful for pots in the shade, adding evergreen structure as well as colour at this time of year. Viola are also lovely spring doers and come in a myriad of colours. Grouping a cluster of pots together can be particularly effective. And if possible, plant en masse with one or several varieties. The great thing about pots is that you can change them every year and move them around to create different effects and combinations - ideally all visible from the house so that you can see these gorgeous early blooms from the window.

Nurturing a Love for Reading Education News From Alleyn's | Www.alleyns.org.uk

Unlocking Success in the Digital Age

R

eading for pleasure is the single biggest indicator of a child’s future success, more than their family circumstances, their parents’ educational background or their income (OECD, 2002). Children who read for pleasure are more likely to do well academically, exhibit higher self-esteem and demonstrate enhanced empathy skills amongst various other benefits. The evidence also shows that children are more likely to persevere in reading and comprehension if motivated by pleasure. And yet, children’s recreational reading is at its lowest level since 2005, in part due to the increasing prevalence of digital gaming and social media, which compete for their time and attention. Children’s publishing is experiencing something of a renaissance, with a vast variety of wonderful books being released across genres and age groups. This is the perfect time to encourage children to explore the joys of reading, so how do we get children to embrace reading in this digital age? World Book Day’s evidence-based approach suggests six key elements that support children in developing a love for reading.

1) Being read to regularly Regularly reading to children is crucial even after they can read independently. It exposes them to advanced concepts and language, fosters closeness, and emphasizes the importance of reading. In the digital age, adults should prioritize reading with children, setting aside screen time to promote a love for reading and serve as positive role models.

2) Having books at home and school Access to books is vital for encouraging children to read. Public libraries offer a wealth of new and lesser-known titles, and resources like eBooks and audiobooks. Libraries often host children’s activities such as comic clubs and storytelling sessions, providing other opportunities for engagement with reading. 14 | SE22 - March 2024

3) Having a choice in what to read Giving children autonomy over their reading choices is immensely powerful. Avoiding fixed notions of what children ‘should’ be reading and allowing them free reign empowers them to navigate their own reading materials leading to the discovery of engaging and challenging content.

4) Finding time to read This can be a particularly challenging with multiple priorities and distractions competing for children’s time. Again, adults can be powerful role-models by promoting independent or shared reading at home. Audiobooks can be a convenient way to listen to stories while doing other activities such as travelling, cooking and tidying up.

5) Having trusted help to find a book Independent bookshops, librarians and friends can provide great advice and recommendations when it comes to ideas on what to read next. Online searches can also help, with websites offering a diverse and captivating range of reading suggestions for children.

6) Making reading FUN Reading for pleasure offers extensive benefits for children with enjoyment being the core focus. If children enjoy reading, they are more inclined to read more, the more they read, the better they’ll get and the more they’ll enjoy it. Cultivating an environment which fosters this virtuous circle leads children on the enriching journey that reading offers. Victoria Edwards Alleyn’s Junior School Librarian

The Importance of Helping Others for Our Own Wellbeing

W

hen we talk about health and wellbeing, the first few things that spring to people’s minds are diet and exercise. Of course, those are very important aspects of health and wellbeing but over the years I have come to realise that social relationships, particularly in the age of AI, are more important than ever. In fact, I believe they are the next frontier of wellbeing. So, in this month article I wanted to share a story with you and who doesn’t love a story?! It is about the importance of helping others for our own wellbeing. Margaret Mead was an anthropologist. And she was asked by a student what she considered to be the first sign of civilisation. Her answer surprised everyone…

The First Sign of Civilisation Mead said the first sign of civilisation is a healed human femur bone. Quick anatomy lesson: that is the big bone that runs from hip to knee. But why would something like this be so significant? Well, ordinarily, whether you are a human or other animal, a broken bone is a death sentence out in the wild. You can’t find water. You can’t hunt for food. And you certainly can’t run away from predators! So normally, that would be game over— and probably a slow death, too. But according to Mead, the discovery of this healed human femur means quite the opposite. In fact, it tells us that at some point, humans started looking after each other and working together. We began helping others. That bone was healed because someone took care of that injured person.

Why Is Helping Others So Important? So, Margaret Mead deemed that to be, in her opinion, the first sign of human civilisation. And here’s why I think it’s an interesting point: We are coming, I would say, to another crunch point. 16 | SE22 - March 2024

We’re in a digital age, AI is starting to dominate our lives, and we don’t really know the direction that’s headed. But something we can control is our connectedness. We only have to look at the health implications of loneliness for proof that social relationships are just as essential as a good diet or exercise. The US Surgeon General equated the lack of social connections to smoking 15 cigarettes a day!* So, we know the effectiveness of belonging, and how powerful it is when we look after each other. And that’s why helping others is so important for our own wellbeing.

Think Femur That bone was discovered around 15,000 years ago. What it tells us is that what mattered then matters just as much now—especially as digitalisation and artificial intelligence really start to take hold. So I want to encourage you to keep sight of the importance of human relationships and helping others. Because that, I think, is going to make us happy, healthy, more resilient, and ultimately continue to thrive in a rapidly changing world. Think femur. *The Lancet, July 08, 2023

Practical Advice for Navigating Later Life | rightathome.co.uk/mitcham

Practical Advice for Navigating Later Life Michael Scott, is the co-owner of the award winning, locally based, specialist, home care company Right at Home Mitcham Streatham and Dulwich. Here we focus on the importance of appointing lasting powers of attorney despite the painful bureaucratic process. rightathome.co.uk/mitcham “Keep out of Chancery. It’s being ground to bits in a slow mill; it’s being roasted at a slow fire; it’s being stung to death by single bees; it’s being drowned by drops; it’s going mad by grains”. Charles Dickens Bleak House 1853

Baby Boomers & Public Services As it moves through the decades, the baby boomer bulge, creates big pressure on public sector services. Now aged between late 50s and late 70s, the boomers together number about 14 million people. As they join the pensioner ranks they become increasingly dependent on public services, especially the NHS and social care. They are also registering a flood of Lasting Powers of Attorneys (LPoA).

Delays at the Office of Public Guardian LPoAs are handled by the Office of Public Guardian (OPG) and the OPG is struggling to cope. There are two types of LPoAs: one for finance and one for health & welfare. Each form is 20 pages and when sent off to be registered, goes with another form which is 6 more pages. The OPG has to handle around 90,000 applications a month. Incredibly, in the world of paperless offices, they handle around 19 million sheets of paper a year! All hard copy applications have to be scanned, checked and registered. Once filed, the turnaround time is currently around 20 weeks. The forms need to be completed very carefully as any errors or omissions will result in the forms being rejected. The poor applicant forfeits the fees (£82 per form) and has to start all over again! 20 | SE22 - March 2024

Why You Need LPoAs Now Despite this hassle and delay everyone (young and old) should complete and register both LPoAs. Hopefully the attorneys will never needed, but these forms (both health and finance) are arguably the most important legal documents you will ever sign. Each year there are many heartbreaking stories in the papers where next of kin (who without the LPoA for health) are staggered to learn they have no legal standing as regards the treatment and care for their loved ones. During Covid you will recall the shocking story of a grand daughter arrested for “rescuing” her grandmother from a care home. Your Mum or Dad may tell you they do not want to go to a care home, but if they lose mental capacity with no appointed attorney, any decision regarding their health and welfare will be made by the “health professionals” acting in what they determine to be the best interests of your Mum or Dad. Similarly with no LPoA in place for finance, anyone who loses mental capacity, will have no access to their money until a deputy is appointed in the Court of Protection – a long and expensive process. Statistically by the time we reach 85, fifty per cent of us will be living with some form of dementia. Accidents, early onset dementia and other medical conditions also occur causing a loss of mental capacity. For you own sake and the sake of your loved ones don’t put off filing your LPoAs – it may save a tragedy becoming a disaster.

Year End Tax Planning

ISA in 2023-24. Some parents and grandparents find the junior ISA an effective first step saving vehicle for their minors.

As the tax year ends, 5th April 2024, draws near, taxpayers still have a short window to undertake some last-minute tax planning activities. Some taxpayers may be driven by the challenges of the current economic environment or the uncertainty of what lies ahead or any combination of drivers. However, whatever, is the taxpayer’s driver, there are still some opportunities for 12th hour planning for tomorrow. Three immediate tax year-end opportunities are set out below.

A non-taxpayer can pay £2,880 into a pension and with tax relief have it boosted to £3,600. Taxpayers who had a pension fund during a previous tax year are able to carry any unused allowances forward, up to a maximum of three years. The annual pension allowance is a particularly attractive option to higher earners as we approach the end of the tax year. Personal tax relief applies to pension contributions, although this may be restricted by the annual allowance or net-relevant earnings. The annual allowance for 2023-24 is £60,000 for those with an adjusted annual income from all sources, including pension contributions, of £260,000 or under a threshold income of £200,000 or less. The annual allowance is reduced by £1 for every £2 of adjusted income over £260,000, down to a minimum of £10,000, although this usually applies to those with a total income of £312,000 or more.

ISA Taxpayers still have time to make use of their £20,000 annual ISA allowance before the tax yearend. The popularity of ISAs continues because savings held in an ISA does not attract any income or capital gains tax. Therefore, the opportunity to utilise the annual ISA allowance of £20,000 should be given serious attention. The allowance is not transferable between fiscal years. Another attractiveness of an ISA is the possibility to invest a maximum of £4,000 into a lifetime ISA. Savers who follow this course of action are rewarded with an annual maximum government bonus of £1,000. Savers may use their lifetime ISA to buy their first home or contribute to their pension. However, savers who wish to take this path must be aged 18-40 years of age. Existing savers with help-to-buy ISAs can continue to save a maximum of £200 per month towards obtaining a mortgage to purchase their first home. The additional twin benefits attached to saving towards a first home are; the savings will earn interest; and qualify for a 25% government bonus of up to £3,000. The purchase price of the property must not exceed £250,000 nationally. However, for properties in London the ceiling price is £450,000. At the other end of the spectrum is the junior ISA. Minors, or those who wish to save on their behalf, can save a maximum of £9,000 into a junior 22 | SE22 - March 2024

Pensions

IHT Gift Exemption With IHT at 40%, taxpayers still have the chance to claim their annual £3,000 gift exemption. Taxpayers can also carry back their gift for 2022-23 if they did not use it last year. This means taxpayers have the opportunity to use a total annual gift exemption of £6,000 before 6th April 2024.

Working From Home As the working from home transformation continues, employees who are required to work from home may be able to claim tax relief of £6 a week from HMRC. Alternatively, employers can pay the allowance to employees tax-free via payroll. However, employees should note that this allowance cannot be claimed if you have chosen to work from home, such as if your employer operates a hybrid working policy. Taxpayers have to act speedily to ensure they can execute these year-end opportunities before the door closes on 5th April 2024.

Scent & Sensibility II Pets Corner with Leonie St Clair | www.londondogstraining.co.uk

L

ast month we looked at the importance of scent and its role in pet housetraining issues. This time I want to address how our recognition of the dog’s ‘smelloverse’ can be a window not only into canine motivations but also a means to address welfare and behaviour issues. It might be said that a dog ‘sees’ through its nose. Humans are primarily a sound and vision species; we rationalise our environment using eyes and ears. Dogs recognise each other primarily via a signature scent and use smell to both signpost and interpret the world around them. Dogs have 300 million olfactory receptors to our 6 million. They have a specialist scent analysis organ in the roof of the mouth and use tail wags to broadcast personal scent information from their anal glands. This is why dogs that go blind or deaf often adjust quite well, because they can still make sense of the world through smell. Our forefathers used dogs to hunt, using that incredible scenting ability to find anything from truffles to an escaped convict. Today we still use dogs to locate missing people, for customs and excise work and for bomb detection. At Medical Detection Dogs in Milton Keynes, dogs are employed to sniff out human cancers and to train as diabetes and allergen alert dogs. They can discern minute odour traces created by disease or changes in the environment, down to around one part per trillion (the equivalent of one teaspoon of sugar in two Olympic sized swimming pools). While a small population of working dogs are encouraged to use their sense of smell many pet dogs are actively discouraged, often to their detriment. Understandably owners do not want their pet shoving a nose into the crotch of a visitor or lingering too long at the pile of fox poo in the park. However, harnessing the dog’s nose in the right way can really add value to walks and general quality of life. A simple way to begin is to teach your dog a basic ‘find’ exercise. Here is how: 1) Start with a handful of tasty, smelly, treats. Toss one to your left, point and say “find”! Then toss one to your other side and cue. Repeat six times. 2) Get your dog to sit and wait or have someone hold his lead or tether him. Walk 6 to 10 feet away and let him see you place a treat on the floor. Walk

26 | SE22 - March 2024

back to his side, pause, and point saying “find” and release him to go and get the treat. Repeat 6 times, unhooking the lead each time to let him go to the treat. 3) Next, have your dog sit and wait, or tether him and place the treat further away. Walk back to his side, pause, and cue him to find the treat. Repeat 6 times. 4) Again, have your dog sit and wait. This time hide several treats in easy places while he is watching. Return to his side, pause, and cue him to find. Do not help if he does not find them right away. You can move closer to the treats and point, but do not show him exactly where they are; you want him to do the work. Repeat 6 times. 5) Now hide the treats one at a time further away and in more difficult places: behind a chair leg or surfaces off the ground. Help your dog by pointing or moving closer to the hiding place, if necessary. 6) Finally, put him in another room while you hide treats. Bring him back in and cue him. Now you can begin to use ‘find’ to exercise your dog inside or outside. You will be amazed how tired your dog is after some nose work.

Street Parties Spring is almost upon us, now is the time to think about holding a party in your street. Last year many streets in East Dulwich held successful street parties to celebrate the King’s Coronation. As this is Olympic year it could be the opportunity to hold mini-Olympic style races and competitions in your street. It’s easy to have your road closed off for the day. Just go to Southwark Council’s Website, look for ‘street parties’ for the guidance notes and the application form. Have a great time.

Goose Green Adventure Playground Unfortunately the popular adventure playground at Goose Green has been out of action due to safety issues. The adventure section has had new timbers installed and is happily back in use.

Measles Update Although there has been an increase in measles activity in London in the last few weeks, current levels remain low, particular across South London including Southwark. With relatively low MMR vaccination coverage, immunity in the population will be low and the risk of a spike in cases is high. Measles is very infectious and nasty disease. As well as a rash, common symptoms such as diarrhoea, middle ear infection, pneumonia and less common, seizures, blindness and inflammation of the brain can occur. It is important for both adults and children to be vaccinated which will help stop the spread of this disease. Please contact your local GP to arrange a vaccination appointment.

Lordship Lane, Shops Update The St. Christopher’s Hospice Shop has had makeover and is looking for good and decent donations of clothes etc. The large Foxtons estate office next door has moved to number 12 along the road. The empty Barclays bank has become a branch of Screwfix. Number 71 Lordship Lane is now the White Swan Chinese restaurant. Soderberg, at 38 is opening a bakery section. 28 | SE22 - March 2024

Local Policing The Goose Green Ward police panel meeting meets every three months. At the last meeting various concerns were discussed by residents and Councillors. These include motor vehicle break ins, and speeding vehicles in Barry Road and East Dulwich Road. Local businesses have voiced their concerns about shoplifting, especially in Lordship Lane. Officers have spoken to the Co-Op and intend setting up a regular stall in the store for crime prevention advice and high visibility in the area. Officers also patrol ‘hot spots’ such as around East Dulwich station where phone snatching has occurred.

Hope you all enjoy the Easter weekend.

New Volunteer Roles at Bell House A chance to be creative, make things happen and to give something back

B

ell House is powered by volunteers who are involved in all aspects of the charity. If you are looking to meet people from all walks of life and help out a great cause, we have two new roles which could interest you.

Would you like to see more Creative Writing at Bell House? Our writing courses have been very popular and going forward we will need someone (or ideally, two) to arrange these courses. If you’re interested please email angus@dulwich.co.uk and tell us a bit about yourself.

Would you like to help organise art exhibitions at Bell House? Apart from our annual Artist’s Open House (May 11th to 19th), we would like to host more art shows for the public. If you are tempted by the idea of making this happen, please email cher@bellhouse.co.uk to let us know your enthusiasm. In addition, we’re always looking for volunteers to help with the wide range of activities happening around the House. You can find out more about these opportunities at: www.bellhouse.co.uk/volunteering All good wishes, Angus, Cher and the Bell House team. SE22 - March 2024 | 31

The Last Word with Sarah Taylor Describe your perfect weekend I have a six-year-old son so spend a lot of Saturday mornings at The Velodrome in Herne Hill to burn off energy! It’s such a fabulous facility to have on our doorstep. As a family, we love stomping around the area, discovering amazing food and spending time in the plethora of green spaces that characterise South East London. There are brilliant playgrounds at Dulwich, Brockwell and Goose Green parks, and come rain or shine, there’s always something to do.

What is your favourite place to eat? I have multiple daytime meetings at the moment and seem to be spending a lot of time in Oru, on Lordship Lane. It has such a nice buzz, the staff are very attentive and their food is healthy and delicious! I also really love their commitment to community, diversity and inclusion.

Your favourite place to go for a drink? The two pubs I love the most in this area are The East Dulwich Tavern and The Crown and Greyhound in Dulwich Village. Despite being big pubs, there are lots of partitions within each one, giving an intimate feeling and a lovely atmosphere! Both have great non-alcoholic options, too.

The best kept secret...

Sarah is the newly appointed Director of Dulwich Festival, Founder of Pexmas and Freelance Events Producer across Southwark. What brought you here? I moved to the area around 15 years ago from North London to be closer to friends and was lucky enough to start working at the arts organisation Bold Tendencies in Peckham.

What do you most value about the area? People and community are at the heart of this area. In my 13 years of running Pexmas, I’ve been blown away by the vast range of makers, crafters, startups, foodies and artists, who live and breathe South East London. Looking forward, I’m excited about showcasing the wealth of creative talent from our area at Dulwich Festival. 32 | SE22 - March 2024

Kingswood House, run by Kingswood Arts, is such a gem, steeped in Victorian history and yet so relevant to its surrounding community. They have brilliant creative programming for families and are hugely focused on accessibility for all. Their café is gorgeous, too!

If money was no object.. Children and young people have really suffered with the funding cuts of the past ten years - many local services, youth clubs and children centres have closed. If I had unlimited funds, I would definitely invest in programmes that offer free support and creative activities to children and young people, giving them hope and skills for the future. I would also love to help fund independent/start-up businesses because there is so much passion for that in this area but the reality of self-funding means it’s not possible for everyone. www.dulwichfestival.co.uk www.pexmas.com
