Welcome It’s May and it is my favourite month of the year. Not just because my birhtday is this month but it is the return of the fabulous Dulwich Festival! There are so many amazing events to choose from, read our preview on page 20. The Artists’ Open House is also part of the Festival, there are too many to feature but read about a collective of artists on page 36. For the full programme please visit www.dulwichfestival.co.uk. Along with the great programme of events there are three fairs this year. The festival starts with the fantasic Festival Fair on Goose Green (can I you guess I organise it!) , then the Love West Dulwich Fair the following weekend, ending with the lovely Dulwich Park Fair on the final Sunday. Read more about the Festival Fair on page 21. Instead of paying for your plastic bags, Lawrence Roullier White has been busy this month tracking down a selection of tote bags, see our shopping page on p32. The Last Word this month goes to David Sanger who has just produced his first novel. Find out more page 52. Remember that the events that miss our print deadline will be found at www.arounddulwich.co.uk as will many other stories. Until next time.

Art Prize for Visitors to Sydenham Hill Could you be the lucky winner?

A

rtist Sarah Hamilton felt lonely in May 2013 when she was the only exhibitor in Artists’ Open House in her neck of Peckarmans Wood. But since that time the number of participating artists has steadily increased. For the first time this year, a cluster of six houses are opening their doors to showcase the work of ten different artists. On 7 and 8 May visitors will be encouraged to collect ‘stamps’ at each venue; and when all six houses have been seen, they will be able to enter a prize draw. The prize will be an Art Swag Bag – an exciting sample of works by Sydenham Hill artists. The scheme was devised by the enterprising Anna Jackson, who will be exhibiting for the first time at 2 Crescent Wood Road. She is a printmaker who loves fabrics and she creates pieces evocative of dreamy landscapes. She is also planning an intriguing ‘tea pot installation’. All the open houses are as fascinating for their architecture and interiors, as for the art on show. Two new hosts, at 2 and 4 Crescent Wood Road, will welcome you in Victorian properties which have survived the transformation of the area by the Dulwich Estate in the 1950s and 60s. Sarah Hamilton’s house was the object of a lengthy feature in the latest issue of the prestigious magazine Midcentury, the author of the article exclaiming: ‘I love how fluid and social this house is’. Social it is and

Sarah Hamilton in her studio ©Torla Evans sociable too: no-one should miss the yearly treat of Sarah’s pop-up tea shop, run by Chris and Yuko (the home-made cakes are legendary). Sarah’s work is like a breath of fresh air – colourful, witty and inventive. She has invited Gabriela Szulman and Georgia Bosson to show work alongside her own. At least three artists work in harmony with their mid-century environment – Justine Ellis, Sarah Hamilton and Virginia Armstrong (Roddy&Ginger). Tiff Howick, by contrast, is drawn to wild-life themes, so relevant to the Dulwich Woods on everyone’s doorstep. But expect an explosion of colour with Eve Williams and Elizabeth Lloyd. Jo Lewis is a landscape artist who works with paper, ink, watercolour and the ebb and flow of the tidal Thames: ‘on the shores of the Thames there is a feeling of landscape, like nowhere else in the city’, she says. And Jo developed a close and trusting relationship with the river, allowing its muddy waters to spread vibrant colours across the immersed sheets of paper. The results are thrilling. Jo also runs popular workshops at the National Gallery and the Dulwich Picture Gallery, so catching her at home should be a real treat. Oh … and I will be selling signed copies of my new book on Dulwich (The Dulwich Notebook) at Sarah Hamilton’s studio! Mireille Galinou dulwichfestival.co.uk/tag-artists-open-house/se26/

May Roundup By Sarah Pylas

M

ay is one of my favourite months on the Dulwich social calendar. Not only does it play host to the annual Dulwich Festival and Festival Fair, but this year is also when a fabulous friend will celebrate the big 5-0 with a well-deserved big birthday bash. There is much more to celebrate this month too – a new Fresh Food market launched in West Dulwich at the end of April, the popular Artists’ Open House event is returning over the two weekends of the Dulwich Festival, and the Brockley Max Arts Festival is back for a 15th year! On a personal level, May is a big month for me as well. Some of you may know that in my other life, I run a small business called Yiayia’s Kouzina. We recently published a recipe book - Secrets from Yiayia’s Greek Kitchen - and will be launching our first range of authentic Greek dips at the Dulwich Festival Fair on Sunday 8 May. We will also be the guest speakers at the East Dulwich WI AGM, talking about our book and giving a dip-making demonstration! If you are planning to attend either event, please do come and say hi, as we would love to see a few friendly faces. Looking back in my diary, I managed to eat out quite a lot last month. That Slimming World membership really does pay for itself… To celebrate the tenth anniversary of when we first met, my husband took me for dinner at The Palmerston. I ordered the fillet of Cornish sea bass while my husband plumped for the grilled 32 day aged Galloway rib eye steak with wild garlic butter, green salad and chips. Both the food and the service, was exceptional and the wine went down a little too well too. Another great local family favourite is Si Mangia on Forest Hill Road, who makes their own

pasta on the premises and much to my delight, this includes gluten free options too! These days, avoiding gluten does not mean having to miss out on anything – Brockley’s Rock even offer gluten free fish & chips on Tuesdays. If only it could be Tuesday every day… I also had a great evening at Olivelli on Lordship Lane with a friend recently. The downstairs restaurant was booked out for a Labour Party dinner the same evening, so we were ushered quietly upstairs and enjoyed a great Italian feast. I have given up pretending to be on a diet – I am just so rubbish at it! However, I am going to try to incorporate more exercise into my routine to try and balance out all the food and ahem… wine. To this end, Angela and I signed up for a studio Pilate’s class at The Pilates Garden on Forest Hill Road, and we are already hooked! Following a posture assessment, our instructor mapped out a per sonalized plan for us both and my muscles really felt the workout the next day. The classes are small and welcoming and the prices are pretty reasonable too. Now, I just need to attend about another 147 classes a week to burn off all the extra calories. Hectic Host

Brunch Time Haunts

W

hilst we are all going to running around the area at break neck speed this month trying to cram in as much of the Dulwich Festival as we can, I thought I would forego the usual Hectic Host labour saving entertaining tips in favour something even quicker. No one can appreciate art on an empty stomach, so whether you decide to meet over breakfast or make a midmorning pit stop, here is a guide to just a few of our favourite brunch time haunts. Mr. Bao on Rye Lane, serves up a delicious weekend brunch: The Full Taiwanese (pictured) consisting of Taiwanese sausage, korokke, smoked bacon, eggs, tomato jam and you have not had beans until you have tried Mr. Bao’s Asian beans. Just across the road at Pedler, on Peckham Rye, I would encourage meat eaters to tuck into a very hearty Pig Mac of 2 pig patties, G’s sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles & fries. New to the area, The Habit, on Nunhead Lane has a changing bistro brunch menu which includes a delicious kale bubble, served with a fried egg and tomato chutney. If you are really in a hurry, Ayers the bakers on Evelina Road, a company that dates back over 60 years, offers a takeout service but I would suggest seriously stocking up on cakes for tea. Anderson & Company on Bellenden Road serves Cilbir: Turkish poached eggs that will put a spring in your step; two poached eggs, herbed labneh, chili butter, chimichurri all on sourdough toast. Lordship Lane is foodie heaven and with so many wonderful places to choose from my apologies to the many I do not have room to include. The Brick House Bakery, world famous for its Peckham Rye Bread serves Square Mile coffee; the perfect fuel for those that may be flagging. I was first introduced to the joys of Christine Ferber’s jams when I was fortunate enough to meet a friend for breakfast in the George V in Paris, I was delighted when I discovered these incredible concoctions are served in our very

Photo: Aaron George own French House on Lordship Lane, with French butter on toasted sourdough. Le Chandelier is an essential part of any visit to East Dulwich and I can recommend the Kedgeree and their Belgian Waffles wholeheartedly. The Scrambled Eggs from Romeo Jones in Dulwich Village, are perhaps the best you are likely to taste, fluffy and creamy topped with succulent smoked salmon and delicious with a steaming coffee. The Dulwich Picture Gallery Café, is always buzzing and terrace is great for a spot of people watching. The Dulwich Bakery in West Dulwich does proper old school Bloomer Sandwiches, the type your granny may have made and they are just as delicious. St David’s Coffee House on David’s Road in Forest Hill offers rather splendid Ricotta on Sourdough with basil, olive oil & balsamic strawberries and I am intrigued to try their weekend special; Persian eggs. Those of you that have not sampled the joy of Bircher Muesli are in for a treat at Canvas & Cream where they serve it topped berries, yoghurt and seeds.

Spiced Lamb Burgers Here is a recipe for the most amazing spiced lamb burger, perfect now the BBQ season is fast approaching! Serves approximately 6 depending on size! Preparation time 20 mins plus 30 minutes chilling time Cooking time 6-10 minutes (depends on thickness)

Ingredients • 1kg Minced lamb • 2 Diced White onion • 2 Diced Red Chili’s • 1 Tablespoon Whole grain Mustard • 1 Whole Egg • 500g Chopped fresh mint

Method 1) In a large bowl, thoroughly mix all ingredients. 2) Once combined well take a nice handful and roll it into a ball, then set aside. 3) Do this until all the mix is portioned out and then place in the fridge for half an hour to chill. 4) While the mix is chilling, get your grill pan or BBQ hot. 5) After 30 minutes in the fridge the burger mix is ready to be formed into burgers. You can do any size or depth that you like, but I prefer a juicy, fatter burger rather than a large flat one. 6) Once they are all shaped you are ready to start cooking, they should take about 3 minutes on each side, but this will depend on how fat you have made them. It is important to ensure that the meat is cooked the whole way through before serving. 7) I like to serve mine in a buttery brioche bun, with fresh tomatoes, crisp lettuce and a harrissa yogurt. 8) Remember, you don’t have to use lamb mince, turkey mince is a nice 'healthier' version

Our Top 10 BBQ tips! 1) Wait until the BBQ is ready – which is when the flames have died down. Be patient; it will be worth the wait! 2) There is nothing better than a homemade burger (recipe above)!! 3) Light the BBQ before guests arrive, the more organised you are the more fun you will have at the BBQ 4) Let your meat get to room temperature before ‘chucking’ in on the BBQ 14 | SE22 - May 2016

5) Don’t pierce the meat with a fork as the juice will escape and the meat will be dryer - use Tongs 6) Don’t add salt until after the meat has been cooked or it will dry out. 7) Let your meat rest when you take it off the BBQ.. it is the key to juicy, perfectly cooked meat. 8) Keep an eye on your grill for the best results… you won’t get lonely as it always seems to be the hub of the event…. Barbecuing is theatre! 9) Marinade, Marinade, Marinade – so many choices, explore them all! 10) It takes time for your caramelised BBQ crust to develop so don’t keep dipping your steaks or burgers’ a maximum of two times should be enough.

Fitness Tips

Five things you can do to get fit for FREE

T

his month I share some tips to encourage you to get outside and embrace the changing seasons by taking more exercise and improving your fitness. None of these activities cost any money, and whilst I’ve suggested where to go, you can choose your own preferred park or place.

Take a Walk My favourite local places for a walk are Nunhead Cemetery, Dulwich Woods, One Tree Hill, Peckham Rye Park and the Waterlinks Way, a trail that stretches from Cator Park to the Cutty Sark in Greenwich. Whilst quite different, all those walks are interesting and especially beautiful at this time of year. If you haven’t been to Nunhead Cemetery yet, prepare to see something quite unexpected in there!

Try Parkrun Parkrun has been going for a few years in our local parks. It’s a 5k run that takes place every Saturday morning in Brockwell, Dulwich and Peckham Rye. It costs nothing to enter, but if you want your time recorded then you need to register (http://www. parkrun.org.uk). The pace is very mixed so suitable for all ages and abilities.

Cycling or Rollerblading in the park Dulwich Park in particular is well-suited to cycling, and is flat and enclosed so good if you have children just learning to ride a bike. Rollerblading is also a great way to get fit and burn calories, and all the parks are good places to bring the skates. Dulwich Park also has a bike hire service and you can have lots of fun on the recumbent bikes but that does cost money.

Create Your Own Workout Most of the local parks now have an outdoor gym, which means you can create your own workout. Try also using some of what nature has provided, 16 | SE22 - May 2016

such as tree trunks for wall sits, and the benches for tricep dips and press ups. Squats and lunges are very effective exercises and can be done anywhere, as can running. More on that next.

Running and how to vary things for greater effect If you haven’t tried jogging, I recommend you do. It’s a great way to improve your cardiovascular fitness and tone the leg muscles. If you are already a runner, try mixing up the tempo (pace) of your runs - run fast then slow, mixing up the pace. Also consider interval sprints (short bursts of rapid sprinting followed by a recovery jog) and hill sprints (but make sure you’ve stretched your calf muscles first and avoid hill sprints if you have calf problems). Pets Corner

Should I neuter my cat or dog?

I

am often asked by clients about the benefits of neutering. The most frequent questions are whether to do it at all and when. The stated benefits of neutering are threefold; population control, reducing the risk of future health problems and preventing or improving behaviour problems, but the reality it not so clear cut. Research to date suggests that for cats the benefits of neutering definitely outweigh the risks, both in terms of health and behaviour. Cats enjoy freedom to roam and both sexes will wander in search of a mate resulting in pregnancy - and cat populations literally explode. Neutering reduces feline fighting, roaming and spraying. Female cats may come into season and become pregnant as early as 4 months. So, unless you plan to breed, neutering your pet is a no-brainer and surgery at 4 months, before puberty is probably best. Dogs are a different matter. The days of the latch key, street dog are over but accidents still happen. Dogs can mate and tie in seconds; the onus is on every owner to neuter or control their pet. However, mass neutering also limits the gene poolleaving it to back yard breeders or those breeding for looks and performance in the show ring. How much do we trust breeders to get it right? Aside from population control- and it is a big aside- an oft proposed positive of neutering is health. However, although neutering reduces the incidence of certain cancers and health issues in both sexes, it also increases the risk of a number of others. Early neutering also affects growth and can result in dogs that are much taller, with longer limbs, putting a strain on joints in later life. Then there are the effects of neutering on dog behaviour. It is here that the picture becomes very grey indeed. The commonly held view is that neutering calms dogs of both sexes and issues with aggression are positively modified, especially in males. In fact the opposite may be true. Aside from the sexual behaviours like roaming, fighting and mating, testosterone also gives the male dog confidence. Certain types of fear aggression can be made worse by neutering and most of the cases of

aggression I see are fear related. Testosterone, the male sex hormone, augments and maintains sexual behaviours, causing the male dog to react to events quickly, for longer and with greater intensity. A red-blooded young dog that is attempting to mount and fight with everything in sight will probably be calmer after castration. However, age is crucial and will differ from dog to dog. An older male post-surgery may show little or no improvement at all. Worse, he may suddenly become attractive to other male dogs. Dogs castrated too young (10 weeks is not unheard of) may never ‘grow up’ and never develop the social skills to deal with other dogs. They may get ‘picked on’ in the park, be harder to train and more easily frustrated. The girls are even more complex. Bitches that show certain types of aggression before their first season can be made more aggressive by removing the calming effects of female sex hormones. On the other hand, certain types of maternal aggression that occur with phantom pregnancies can be improved by neutering, as can ‘moodiness’ caused by seasons and competitive aggression between bitches- bitches will fight to the death to oust a rival. The best advice is do your research, talk to your breeder and other dog owners. If your puppy is showing aggression, is fearful or shy, talk it through with your vet- early neutering may not be the best plan. Leonie St Clair - www.londondogstraining SE22 - May 2016 | 25

“To be in the top 20 schools across the whole of England is something of which we’re immensely proud and determined to build on too,” said Principal Jane Fletcher.

Progress is measured by comparing students’ attainment at the start of Year 7 with when they leave at the end of Year 11. Figures previously published by Ofsted show we’ve been in the top 3% nationally for student progress for the past five years.

Harris Girls’ Academy East Dulwich is in the top 20 schools in England for student progress, according to a new report on the state of education in this country, published last month by the independent think-tank CentreForum.

Architectural Lecture Walk Dulwich Terrace Houses

Monday 9 May Directed by Roman Polanski with Jack Nicholson, Faye Dunaway and John Huston. This neo-noir psychological drama, sees private eye "Jake" Gittes hired by Evelyn Mulwray to investigate her husband's activities. It won eleven Academy Award nominations, winning an Oscar for Best Screenplay and now, over 40 years later, Chinatown is still hailed as one of the greatest films ever made.

Thursday 26 May 2.30-4.00pm. £7, Friends £5 The terrace house is the most common house type in Dulwich. This walk, led by Ian McInnes, will complement Peter Guillery’s talk the previous day. It will see how local house design has changed and developed, going from the C18 houses in Dulwich Village through the C19 to early C20, and later.

Music

Saturday 28 May 2.30-4.30pm. £10, Friends £8 In the 1850s and 60s many wealthy individuals built substantial villas along Sydenham Hill and Crescent Wood Road – but only a few remain. The ‘must have’ in those days was a garden folly, ideally made by Pulhamite, some of which are still visible. Ian McInnes will lead a short walk round the area talking about the houses and some of their owners. The walk will finish at Lyncombe, Crescent Wood Road (dating from 1868), with a cup of tea in the garden, hosted by former FDPG chair Jenny Sweeney.

Artists’ Open House Weekends

Jo Lewis, Flow 2, 1916 36 | SE22 - May 2016

Dulwich Hamlet FC - News

As the season draws to a close…

B

y the time you are reading this, we’ll know whether Hamlet will be playing once again in the Isthmian Premier next season. After a period of bad form and an embarrassing defeat to local rivals Tooting and Mitcham, results have improved leaving Hamlet requiring four points from their final two games in order to guarantee a play off spot. So I will use this opportunity to reflect on a couple of the clubs stand out performers this season. The debate over who should be awarded the Hamlet player of the season award will focus on two men, Ethan Pinnock and Nyren Clunis. Both are local lads that have progressed through the academy and their form has remained consistent even when results have seen a downturn. Pinnock

is still only 22 and has been a commanding figure in the heart of Hamlet’s defence, continuing the form that saw him make a clean sweep at last years end of season awards. After filling in a number of positions throughout his career, it was last season that saw him win a regular place at centre back – alongside the vastly experienced Terrell Forbes. Pinnock’s progress was dramatic and lead to some serious interest from football league clubs, this year he has partnered Matt Drage and looked equally adept. Clearly one of the best players in the league, it wouldn’t be any surprise if this summer saw him become the latest academy product to move into the professional game. Nyren Clunis is still only 24 but after making his debut in 2009, the tricky winger is now closing in on his 300th appearance. Blessed with speed and an eye for goal, ‘the king of camberwell’ as he is known by supporters, has been one of the clubs leading performers in recent years. There have been games this season where he has almost single handily dragged Hamlet to a result and they are certainly fortunate to have had the skills of such a talented player for so long. As with every club at this level, its likely to be a busy summer of transfers irrelevant of which league Dulwich are competing in. Last summers recruitment saw a number of players come in with strong pedigree of playing at a higher level and I think its fair to say that a number of them haven’t reached quite the levels we had hoped for back in pre-season. On paper this seasons squad was strong enough to win the title and whilst Plumbing victoryGeneral through the play-offs would be a fantastic achievement should it happen, it’s likely that we Emergency Leak Repairs will see a number of last summers signings move on from Champion So keep your eye on the Blockages & Hill. Financial Matters

Could a bear market or stock market crash work in your favour?

I

f you have any money invested in a personal pension or stocks and shares ISA, you might be aware of bull and bear markets. You may on the other hand be blissfully oblivious. What is certain is that you’ll probably hear these terms used again and again by market analysts; especially in choppy markets. Simply put, a bull market refers to a stock market on the rise. It is typified by a sustained increase in share prices such as we had between August 2011 and April 2015. In that period, the stock market rose by a whopping 40%! Behind this sustained market performance was strong economic forecasting from the commentators and experts. The danger with bull markets is that people start believing that the phenomena would continue forever. For example, most investors looking back from April 2011 to April 2014 would have seen an amazing return on a typical equity based investment. Expecting this to continue, they may have decided to take a higher risk than they normally would only have their fingers burnt later. A bear market on the other hand is one that is in decline with share prices falling for a sustained period, resulting in a downward trend. A recent example would be most of the last 12 months, where the FTSE 100 share index fell from 7089 in April 2015 to 5707 in February 2016. That’s a fall of nearly 20% in one year! In that period, most people would have seen their stocks and shares ISAs and personal pensions fall in value. Bear markets can be dangerous because bad news sells newspapers and bear markets are perfect for this. With headlines like “Market Armageddon” and “Stocks and Shares Meltdown”, many investors who are in it for the long term may see this, panic and go defensive, or worse still, cash out. So what to do? In my opinion, one of the worst things you can do is to keep a daily eye on your investments. This causes stress, and as a passenger you may get frustrated as there isn’t much you can do about the rises and falls in your investments. Worse still, you may find yourself taking the wheel in the belief that you could do a better job yourself!

44 | SE22 - May 2016

Unless you are an expert with nothing else to do with your life, this could lead to disaster. So what to do? Patience is key with any long term investment. If you’ve invested in tracker funds which typically mirror the markets, you’ll just have to wait and ride out the storm. My advice for those in trackers is to cash out when the market is high. This in itself can be difficult; for when you’re making money, the natural instinct is to hold on to make more! Managed funds work differently. In my opinion, market timing isn’t as important when your fund is being managed by a fund manager. Their job is to watch the markets, take advantage and buy value stocks in bear markets or to sell out of overpriced holdings in bull markets. There is of course a price premium in having your fund managed by an expert. What price peace of mind? Either way, your independent financial adviser’s job is to help you sift through the myriad of options out there aiming to find you a decent compromise between charges and performance. With the right team behind you, you could have a team of bulls and bears pulling in the right direction – wouldn’t that be nice?

SE22 Councillors

More Double Yellow Line Madness!

A

s well as the pending plans to introduce 10,000 metres of double yellow lines in total across Dulwich the council has insisted that any new dropped kerb has lots of double yellow lines either side and across it. We had one proposal on Lordship Lane for 3 dropped kerbs that required 12 parking spaces to be removed. We felt we had no choice but to reject this proposal. I’m sorry for the home owners who wanted dropped kerbs but hope they understand the imbalance that the councils mad double yellow line policies is now causing One scheme that unfortunately did gain approval, as a local councillor I with others didn’t realise how ghastly it would be on the ground, was where some residents reasonably wanted a dropped kerb. This was agreed and installed on Barry Road. One dropped kerb for one car parking space has resulted in 25 metres of double yellow lines or five car parking spaces being removed (Pictured above right). Again this location has no recorded crashes over the last eight years so 25 metres of double yellow lines appears a significant over reaction. We now need to try and reverse this daft decision we should never have been asked to make. If you know of any double yellow lines that appear unnecessary please do let me know so we can investigate.

Bulk Waste Collection Last Autumn Southwark Council introduced a £16 charge to use the council bulk waste collection service. We ‘called-in’ this decision and unusually for such an opposition request it was supported cross party. We asked for the decision-making councillor to explain how people in poverty without cars would dispose of bulky waste. I’ve had confirmation that the final decision was that poorer residents would just have to manage somehow. For many a £16 charge to have bulk waste removed is an insurmountable problem. If you have such neighbours please do try and find a nice way to offer to take any bulk waste away that they might have to the dump when you’re next going that way.

SNUB We’ve agreed to fund a new batch of Say No To Unwanted Bag canvass bags. We’re hoping this will really compliment the 5p per plastic bag legislation 48 | SE22 - May 2016

and they should be ready by the summer time. Can you help make this happen – get in touch to offer your help.

New Street Cleaner I applied for Neighbourhood Funding of £20,000 for a dedicated extra street cleaner for East Dulwich ward. Sadly I didn’t convince my colleagues to fully fund this. But I did persuade councillors from all three wards – College, East Dulwich and Village wards - to each fund £10,000 to each have an extra part-time street cleaner to reverse the trend of ever messier streets. This should start to turn around how grotty many of our local streets have become. Shout out the grottiest spot you’ve come across.

Cheery Tree Blossom For a few weeks in March and April we had Cherry blossom trees in full bloom on Melbourne Grove and a number of other streets. The idea for this came from former councillor Robin CrookshankHilton that we shamelessly copied in East Dulwich. I hope you’ve enjoyed this cheeriness as much as I have. Where would you like to see such Cherry Blossom Trees?

Garden Talk

The Fragrant Garden

S

cent can be a last consideration when choosing plants – but even a few fragrant flowers near a seating area will make your morning coffee or evening drink a more uplifting experience. Here are some ideas to create your own garden fragrance.

Herbs

Bring wonderful Mediterranean aromas into the garden with aromatic plants and herbs. Lavender such as dark purple Lavandula angustifolia ‘Hidcote’ flowers from July and releases its aromatic oil when touched, so plant near a sunny seat or path. Purple sage, Salvia officinalis Purpurascens, complements the silvery grey foliage of lavender. Add thyme, oregano and chives for a pretty combination that’ll be great for your cooking too.

Shrubs Lilac (Syringa) comes into its own now with its heavenly scented blousy blooms in purples and white. Syringa vulgaris are most perfumed and dwarf varieties can be grown in pots in smaller gardens. I love Osmanthus x burkwoodii, a pretty evergreen shrub with fragrant creamy white flowers in spring. There are lots of scented viburnums such as Viburnum x burkwoodii which has clusters of gorgeous pinky white vanilla scented flowers in April. Winter flowering Daphnes such as Daphne Odora with its delicate clusters of pale pink flowers will give you a lift on a cold day – as will fab Sarcococca, with its neat evergreen foliage and a mass of pungent honey-sweet creamy flowers throughout winter.

Spring Bulbs Spring bulbs are great grown in pots, strategically placed near a door or seating area– then moved away while the foliage dies back. Hyacinths (Hyacinthus orientalis) come in some gorgeous colours, white, blues, purples. Grape hyacinth Muscari ‘Golden Fragrance’ is one of my favourite scent-wise.

Perennials and annuals Try growing Lilium regale in a large pot for a divine smell that will perfume the whole garden when 50 | SE22 - May 2016

they open. They’re great to bring into the house too. A word of caution though, all parts can be fatal to cats. Phlox paniculata cultivars and dianthus are other sweet smelling perennials. As for annuals, you can’t get more fragrant than sweet peas (Lathyrus). They’ll cling to anything – a trellis, a wigwam of cherry sticks. To keep them going you need to pick them everyday. So bring them into the house and enjoy a constant supply of fresh, sweetly scented flowers.

Climbers Jasmine, whether Jasmine officinale or the evergreen tidier Trachelospermum jasminoides should be in every garden. Aquebia quinata, the chocolate vine is a also a must for its delicate, yes chocolate, scent. And Wisteria of course for spectacular Spring scent.

Roses They’re not all fragrant but David Austin roses are bred for scent. Choosing a rose, or any scented plant for that matter, is like choosing a perfume, you need to make some research, not in books, not online, you actually need to visit gardens and smell loads of roses, until you find the one for you.

The Last Word – David Sanger The most famous person you’ve seen? Running around Dulwich Park, I once saw Iain Glen out on his own run. He plays a favourite character of mine in Game of Thrones so I immediately convinced myself I had the same training regime as this noble knight!

Describe your perfect weekend It would involve a hefty stack of pancakes and bacon from Le Chandelier, followed by some sun in Dulwich Park. I’d reopen The Crown and Greyhound early so I could get an afternoon pint before watching something on the outdoor screen at the Dulwich Picture Gallery. Sunday would then be breakfast at the Blackbird Bakery before an old film at the Picturehouse to forget it’s Monday tomorrow!

What is your favourite place to eat? David Sanger’s debut novel ‘All Their Minds in Tandem’ is set in West Virginia in 1879 and focuses on the introduction of an enigmatic stranger to a town scarred by the Civil War. David is an East Dulwich resident and worked in publishing for six years before deciding to become a writer.

How long have you lived in the area? I’ve lived in East Dulwich for five years, with one year in Berlin in the middle.

What brought you here? It was originally because my girlfriend was a teacher at a local school. We knew next to nothing about the area but soon fell in love with it. That’s what brought us back.

What do you most value about your street? The quiet! I live near East Dulwich station but once I’ve turned onto the street, it’s like shutting a window. Birdsong replaces car horns and I know I’m almost home.

What one thing would you change? I’d go back and open the Picturehouse cinema a few years earlier. I frequented The Ritzy before, which I love, but the Picturehouse is so fantastic and I feel spoilt having it so close.

The one thing you couldn’t do without? The local acting group The Dulwich Players. I auditioned for one of their plays soon after moving to Dulwich and have hardly been apart from them since. In addition to the acting, they’re an incredible group of people who encompass all that’s creative and welcoming about the area. 52 | SE22 - May 2016

I love Rocca in Dulwich Village. It’s so friendly and welcoming and the food is incredible there. But if ever their tiger prawns on sourdough toast leaves the menu I’ll stage a one-man protest.

Cafe, pub or bar? Café for me. I love taking a book or a notepad to a café, which soon gets sidelined by my people watching. It’s another guilty pleasure I put down to ‘book research’.

The book I’m reading at the moment.. I love David Sedaris and am currently reading ‘Me Talk Pretty One Day’. His writing is so sharp, unabashed and wicked, and his stories reduce me to laughter and tears so readily. I don’t think there’s anyone who can end a piece of writing as well as him.

My perfect holiday.. Whilst a beach holiday with nothing to do has its appeal, a trip to Berlin would win it for me as it’s like a second home. I’ve been there a lot but I don’t think I’ll ever really know it. Plus I still suffer withdrawal from German cakes so need to go back regularly.

My secret ambition.. I’m a huge Star Wars fan so being able to write anything to do with that would install a permanent smile on my face. It’s not so secret though as I am one step away from scrawling it on a sandwich board and standing outside the film studio. foxmason.com/books/all-their-minds-in-tandem/ twitter.com/davesanger09
