Broadcaster and journalist Robin Lustig, will be in conversation with BBC Deputy Political Editor, John Pienaar, at the Dulwich Picture Gallery on 17th May. Entertaining the audience with stories from his 40-year career, this discussion will provide a fascinating insight into the world of journalism at home and abroad. Come and meet Jennifer Scott, new director of the Dulwich Picture Gallery, who will be in conversation with art critic Alastair Sooke. Scott, only a month into her tenure as the first female director of the Gallery, will be talking about her ideas for its future, on 19th May. The charity Clowns Without Borders focuses
on the homeless child victims of displacement and aims to encourage affected children to laugh, play and forget their struggles. At St Barnabas Parish Hall on 13th May, young festival-goers will have the opportunity to experience one of their performances; expect a very silly afternoon! For drama lovers, the Festival welcomes back internationally-acclaimed Tangram Theatre Company with the third and final part of their scientrilogy, ‘The Element in the Room: A Radioactive Musical Comedy about the Death and Life of Marie Curie’. Their collaborative, challenging and entertaining approach to theatre will enthrall a family audience, so get ready to join in! This year’s musical calendar caters to all tastes. The Festival begins on 12th May with an evening of three choirs celebrating the human voice in their own distinct ways; Note-Orious, a community choir of local amateur singers; The Barberfellas, a small barbershop chorus from London’s LGBT community; and Gospel Essence, the a cappella choir from Gareth Malone’s ‘Naked Choir’ programme. For classical music fans, a highlight will be a performance of ‘Façade’, William Walton’s setting of Edith Sitwell’s poem sequence, by the Bloomsbury Ensemble of London with Julie Berry and Paul Guinery narrating, in the spectacular surroundings of the Dulwich Picture Gallery on 16th May. Meanwhile, for contemporary music lovers, acclaimed indie-folk quintet Patch &

Tuesday 2 May: A.C. Grayling on War: An Enquiry At 19.00 on the 2nd May we’ll hear from A.C. Grayling – leading philosopher and public intellectual – presenting the arguments of his new book 'War: An Enquiry.' In this original and deeply considered book, A. C. Grayling examines, tests, and challenges the concept of war. He proposes that a deeper, more accurate understanding of war may enable us to reduce its frequency, mitigate its horrors, and lessen the burden of its consequences. In a profoundly wise conclusion, the author envisions “just war theory” in new moral terms, taking into account the lessons of World War II and the Holocaust and laying down ethical principles for going to war and for conduct during war. May News By Sarah Pylas
W
ith the summer school term now well under way and our house finally free of chocolate Easter eggs and all the mini accompaniments of deliciousness that come with them, I can turn my full attention to May. There is much to look forward to locally this month, but as my BABY is going away on his first residential school trip this week, you may just find me sobbing into a bottle of rosé instead! Fortunately, we will be reunited in time for The Dulwich Festival, which will explore and celebrate the theme of ‘home’ this year. Art will spring up throughout the area in Artists’ Open House and the Festival Children’s Art Competition; musicians will bring extraordinary sounds throughout the 10 days, wonderful walks will awake the senses, talks and theatre will stretch the imagination and fabulous fairs will welcome all throughout each weekend. I will be back with my homemade Greek dips (plus baklava, spanakopita and kalamata olives) at the Dulwich Festival Fair on Sunday 14th May and the Dulwich Park Fair on Sunday 21st. The fairs are a wonderful day out for all the family with amazing food, bouncy castles, donkey rides, magicians, live music and free face painting for kids! If you pass by my stall ‘Vasso’s Kouzina’ please do say hello and sample our dips - it’s always lovely to see a friendly face! There is much more to look forward to at this year’s festival too with an exciting programme of events planned. Over 200 artists will be opening their doors as part of the popular Artists’ Open House event held over both weekends of the festival. Other highlights include journalist and broadcaster, Robin Lustig, in conversation with John Pienaar, The Harlem Meer Cats in concert at JAGS, and a demonstration at Dulwich Picture Gallery on how to Paint like the Old Masters.
Away from the festival, Angela and I will be learning how to transform our look with expert colour and style analysis from House of Colour. I have a feeling my go-to grey/black jeans with grey/black waterfall cardigan combo will be told to go… although, I am hoping our consultant will insist yellow is my colour as I have my eye on a lovely new spring coat. As this month draws to a close, longstanding members of the 7th XI Dulwich Cricket Club team will head off on their annual ciderdrenched tour (jolly) to Somerset, taking my husband with them! However, in contrast to my BABY going away without me, this particular solo trip has me skipping towards the rosé as it means 3-days of having the bed to myself, sole custody of the remote control and no dirty socks to pick up off the floor! Oh, he knows I’ll miss him really. Probably. As always, you can find details of all local news, events and ticket information over on our website. You can also find us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter @arounddulwich

Garden Talk
Clematis Crazy Clematis will cloak your fences in rich colour – and there’s one for every season. Here’s my pick of the best:
Spring Spring flowering clematis tend to have smallish flowers. First up in March are the evergreen C. armandii variety with long dark green leaves and a mass of small, scented flowers. ‘Snowdrift’ is pure white and ‘Apple Blossom’ pink-tinged. From April to May come the delicate bellshaped flowers of the alpina clematis such as the gorgeous deep blue ‘Frances Rivis’ and pink ‘Constance.’ The multi-petalled C. macropetala varieties are very pretty - exquisite grey-blue ‘Lagoon‘ is a must. Finally, for May there are the vigorous montanas. C. ‘Elizabeth’ has a mass of pale pink flowers while ‘Willsonii’ is a lovely scented white variety. Cultivation: Armandii and alpina are happy in dappled shade – montanas need more warmth. These Group 1 clematis need a tidy up after flowering to remove dead shoots and keep to their allotted space. Armandii can be cut right back after flowering to avoid the leathery leaves taking over.
Early Summer If you like big (up to 15cm wide) exotic-looking flowers, early summer clematis, which start flowering in June, are for you. The blousy ‘Nelly Moser’ with large lilac striped flowers is well known, or try purple ‘The President’ or deep red ‘Niobe’. Cultivation: They like sun or partial shade, depending on the variety as some such as ‘Nelly Moser’ are best in shade to prolong the flowers. These pruning group 2 clematis can become a tangle so remove old stems to the base in late February leaving a framework of healthy stems shortened to around a third before being tied in.
Late Summer Clematis flowering from July are great as they keep going well into Autumn. C. ‘Jackmanii’ is a wellknown variety with deep purple flowers and yellow green stamen. C. Etoile Violette is a winner with rich plummy purple flowers and yellow gold stamens, while C. ‘Purpurea Plena Elegans’, is a pretty dusky 12 | SE22 - May 2017
pale plum double. ‘Prince Charles’ with sky blue flowers is similar to ‘Perle d’Azure’ but more reliable and compact so great for fences. These clematis look lovely scrambling amongst climbing roses such as the pink ‘New Dawn’, or yellow ‘Buff Beauty’ Cultivation: They tolerate partial shade but prefer sun. Group 3 is easy to prune by cutting back old growth to 23/45 cm in mid February to mid March above a healthy bud. (As a rule of thumb any clematis flowering from July can be cut hard back in spring as they flower on the current year’s growth.)
Autumn For a bit of zing, C. orientalis ‘Bill MacKenzie’ has bright lemon-peel like petals and silky seeds into October – but it’s also useful for its foliage, which stays green from May to November. Golden Tiara is another of the same tangutica variety with black stamens. Cultivation: Happy in sun or shade. ‘Bill Mackenzie’ can become large so prune hard (20cm from the ground) in February and again in the summer.
Winter Clematis In the dead of winter, clematis cirrhosa varieties, brighten the garden with their delicate bell-shaped flowers and evergreen foliage. ‘Wisley Cream’ is white and ‘Freckles’ has dark pink speckles. Cultivation: Cut back overlong shoots to a healthy bud after flowering if growth needs to be restricted. Janine Winlaw - Writer & Gardener

Food & Drink with Suzanne James
Spring Tacos with Mushrooms We have been experimenting with Tacos this month, to be served as evening food for a wedding couple with a Mexican connection. This traditional Mexican dish is composed of a corn or wheat tortilla folded or rolled around a filling. A taco can be made with a variety of fillings, including beef, pork, chicken, seafood, vegetables, and cheese, allowing for great versatility and variety. This easy recipe with garlic, mushrooms and melted cheese couldn’t be simpler, it is meat free but has amazing flavour and is the perfect dish to serve as the warmer weather arrives. Serves 4. Preparation time 10 minutes. Cooking time 10-20 minutes
Ingredients • 25g (3/4oz butter) • 2 tablespoon olive oil • 250g Oyster Mushrooms, sliced • 250g Chestnut Mushrooms, sliced • 250g Button Mushrooms, sliced • Sea Salt & Black Pepper • 1 tablespoon Truffle Oil (optional) • 2 Shallots, finely chopped • 2 Cloves of Garlic, finely chopped • Small handful thyme, chopped
To Serve • 4 Soft Tacos (homemade or buy ready made) • Small handful of parsley, roughly chopped • Grated Pecorino Cheese • Sweet Chipotle Paste • Chilli or Fresh Tomato Salsa
Method 1) Heat half the butter and olive oil in a frying pan and add the mushrooms, garlic, seasoning, thyme and salt and pepper. 2) Cook over a high heat until the mushrooms have released their juices and the juice has started to evaporate – about 10 minutes. 3) Add the rest of the butter and the oil, including the truffle oil if you are using it, the shallots and cook until soft. 4) Check the seasoning. 14 | SE22 - May 2017
5) Spoon the mushrooms into a heated dish and sprinkle over the parsley and cheese. 6) Make the tacos with the mushroom mix and add sweet chipotle sauce or fresh tomato salsa, add a dollop of crème fraiche and roll.

Alcohol & your fitness? What are the effects of alcohol on weight management and fitness? Excessive consumption of alcohol can be harmful for the brain and body. Anything more than two drinks per day (on average) is too much, and problem drinking comes in many forms. If you’ve lost one of your personal possessions or your phone more than twice due to alcohol; if you’ve missed work or social engagements more than twice; if you’ve said something you regretted on several occasions because of alcohol, then that’s problem drinking. It’s about where it takes you rather than how much you consume.
What happens when you drink alcohol? Alcohol is absorbed rapidly into the bloodstream through the stomach and small intestine. Once absorbed, it affects every part of the body. In order to metabolise the alcohol, the liver takes on the brunt of the work, and the alcohol is then processed out via the breath and in the urine. Alcohol affects the brain in various ways, primarily affecting the frontal lobes, which influence speech, memory, judgement and movement. The central nervous system (CNS) is also impacted, and excessive (and prolonged) alcohol consumption can have long-term effects on impulse control and movement.
The effect on sport and fitness Alcohol is a diuretic, so it dehydrates you. Studies have shown that performance becomes impaired when the body is as little as 2% dehydrated, and you are more likely to overheat if you’re dehydrated. Alcohol harms the muscle fibres, which impacts your recovery and negates a lot of the work you have done in the gym. It also reduces testosterone in the blood, and disrupts sleep. It 16 | SE22 - May 2017
is during deep sleep that growth hormones are released, which are vital for muscular gains. While alcohol is present in the body, the liver will be working overtime to break down the alcohol and remove it. It therefore won’t be producing as much glucose, and your blood sugar will be lower and your performance will be slower. Not only will your performance be affected, but your co-ordination, speed and agility will also become impaired. If you’re hungover, the body can’t clear out lactic acid as effectively, and this also impairs performance.
The effect on weight management Alcohol is very high in sugar, and it’s very easy to gain weight this way. Calorie burn is slowed in the presence of alcohol, and the absorption of nutrients is also reduced. If you want to lose weight, or even maintain your weight, it’s really important to control your alcohol intake.
The effect on your health Alcohol affects everything in the body. Alcohol consumption can seriously affect your mental health, and many studies have linked it to depression, anxiety and chronic stress. Alcohol will slow down recovery from stress, exercise, illness and injury. Alcohol is an insidious drug that tends to creep up on people. A good diet, a regular exercise regime and something that helps you calm the body down should always be your first line of defence.

The charity Clowns Without Borders focuses 20 | SE22 - May 2017
on the homeless child victims of displacement and aims to encourage affected children to laugh, play and forget their struggles.

12th - 21st May The Giant will be performing at Belair House on 18th May, supported by the incomparable singer-songwriter James Riley who has ventured home to the UK from an extended stay in Tennessee. The following evening, 19th May, at the same venue, blues singer-songwriter, Adam Norsworthy, known as the lead singer of Britishblues rock band The Mustangs will delight with his mellow sounds during an intimate evening. He will be bringing along some special guests to play with him. Jazz lovers will be excited to learn of the return of The Harlem Meer Cats to the Festival line-up after their launch sell-out event in the 2014 Festival with six of the finest early jazz specialists in London. Ned Bennett's authentic adaptations of such classics as Black and Tan Fantasy, Echoes of the Jungle, Jubilee Stomp and many more really capture the exotic atmosphere of New York's famous Cotton Club. Duke Ellington's "Jungle Style" is at once dark yet joyous, mysterious yet immediate, with growling trumpet, seductive sax and talking trombone. Over 250 artists will once again be opening the doors of their homes and studios for the everpopular Artists’ Open House, taking place across both weekends of the festival and giving the public an opportunity to view their work and talk to the makers about their creative processes. Pets Corner
The Importance Of Play For Pets
O
ne of the key messages I repeat over and over with clients I see for behaviour work is the importance of playing with their pet - be it a cat, dog, bird or bunny. It seldom occurs to us that the domestic species we invite into our homes to live alongside us might get bored or frustrated but this, sadly, is often the case and can lead to all sorts of behaviour issues. Play is a controlled substitute for animals hardwired for natural behaviours they are otherwise unable to exhibit in the home. This is not simply a matter of supplying toys and leaving the pet to entertain itself. Most species developed to live with humans are more social than not. Social, as opposed to solitary animals need interaction with their owners. Play, along with caregiving activities like feeding, grooming and petting, are essential for developing the human animal bond and keeping pets happy and relaxed. Where animals are caged for part of the day, like rabbits, hamsters or birds, short interactive play sessions should be provided around three times a day. Hamsters, rats and rabbits will all enjoy variations on logic toys, where items are opened, levers pulled or buttons pressed to dispense food or treats. Cardboard items, whether boxes or tubes, are great for most pets. For burrowers and diggers tubes can be filled with food hidden in shredded paper or hay. Many pets, including birds, can be taught to play ‘fetch’ where lightweight items are retrieved and exchanged for food. Rabbits delight in knocking things over with their noses and rabbit skittles or ‘bopping’ is a favourite game. With cats, games should mirror hunting activity and the best toys should be prey-like with fake feathers or fur. Owners are able to animate the toy by flicking it around and pulling it to excite the cat’s prey drive. Having caught the toy the cat will want to ‘kill’ and dissect it, so choose toys
24 | SE22 - May 2017
that fall apart and can then be put back together. Once the game is over, the owner should retrieve the toy and put it away, replacing it with another toy for the next game so the cat does not get bored. In fact, toys used for interactive games with any type of pet are best put away until the next play session. This not only increases the value of the toy but also the role of the human; interaction with both becomes more desirable to the pet as a consequence. Dog owners should play with their pet at least twice a day. Controlled play is the best way to increase the repertoire of obedience skills. It also teaches the dog to hold back on instinctive behaviours like chasing and grabbing - both triggered by movement. The best games are those that involve retrieving and/or find - the latter being a simple version of scent-work. These games tend to involve focus and control and so calm the dog as he learns to work on command and use his brain. However, a controlled retrieve is very different from simply chucking a ball over and over for the dog to chase; this will simply hype the dog, creating an adrenalin junkie. Not all dogs are instinctive retrievers but, with patience and a structured approach to training, many can be taught a controlled retrieve. For dogs that will not retrieve, a game of ‘find’ is a fantastic option that most will enjoy.

Find out more about how Harris Girls’ Academy East Dulwich has developed. Visit www.hgaed.org.uk or call Principal Carrie Senior on 020 7732 2276 to arrange a personal visit.
Girls in years 7-9 worked in teams on a day-long project to build a Lego train that would run on an electrified track, and were judged on their ability to work together, the cost-efficiency of their train, its aesthetics and how long it took to build.
Students at Harris Girls’ Academy East Dulwich designed and built their own train recently as part of a project for Science Week to give them a better understanding of what’s involved in engineering.
Budding engineers can also take part in our science and design technology clubs, which run throughout the year.
Other projects this year included a competition for Year 7 students across the Harris Federation to see who could transport a one penny coin the furthest using a self-propelled vehicle. Our team went for balloon-power! Sadly we didn’t win but learned a great deal about how engineering projects work.
Every year we organise events for Science Week to develop students’ interest in and understanding of science and engineering.

Dulwich Hamlet FC - News
End of the Season
D
Sarah Binns receiving her Volunteer of the Year award from Club President Jack Payne
espite losing against already relegated Greys Athletic in the last home game of the season, Dulwich Hamlet sealed their place in the Ryman Premier league’s promotion play-offs for the third year running. At the time of writing the team travels to fellow promotion candidates Wingate and Finchley hoping to secure a home fixture for the one legged semi-final tie due to take place Thursday 27 April. The club reached the semi-finals in both the League and London Senior cup competitions this season but disappointingly failed to make either final. The recent London Senior Cup lose away to Cray Valley Paper Mills was particularly hard to take due to the fact that it had previously been announced that the final was to take place at Champion Hill. Despite The Hamlet going into a 2-0 lead, the home side forced extra time which saw the Southern Counties East league side hold out to win 3-2 and seal their place in the final. After the final home league game of the season, the club announced this year’s winner of the Club Person of the Year and it deservedly was

awarded to Supporters Trust Board member Mel Hughes. Mel puts in 100’s of voluntary hours a year into ensuring that the club shop is always fully stocked of amazing Dulwich Hamlet supporters merchandise and she can often be seen in the local East Dulwich post office on a Saturday morning posting items to Hamlet supporters around the world. For the first time the club introduced a Volunteer of the Year award and this was won by Sarah Binns. Each season, the Supporters’ Trust put in many hours of volunteering both behind the scenes and on match days and we have a great team of Trust members who regularly help us out. There is always room for more volunteers covering such work as 50/50 sales, programme sales, flyering, working in the Mega Container, general ad hoc work and doubling up with other roles for big matches. If you’re interested in volunteering you can contact the Supporters Trust at info@dhst.org.uk Combined with collections on the day & the proceeds of the clubs 50/50 ticket sales, around £2,000 was raised for charity in the recent silent
Dulwich Hamlet FC - News auction to win one of the clubs one-off purple International Women’s day kit’s which was recently worn against Merstham FC. The remainder of the kit was raffled off over three recent home matches, organised by the Dulwich Hamlet Supporters' Trust, with every penny from this being split being handed over to help pay for our free-to-see Dulwich Hamlet-TV service; & the Inter City 125 campaign, which is trying to raise enough money to take The Hamlet to Hamburg, for a pre-season training camp to Germany in July 2018, which will include a special celebratory game against our good friends from Altona 93. Before the last league fixture of the season, a group of Dulwich Hamlet FC fans will be walking from Champion Hill all the way to our away game at the Harry Abrahams stadium, home of Wingate & Finchley FC. The purpose of the walk is twofold: Firstly to raise money in aid of the InterCity 125 fans’ campaign, and secondly to raise money for Shelter, a charity the club has supported many times in the past. The InterCity 125 appeal is an independent, joint fund-raising initiative by Dulwich
Hamlet fans, to raise funds for a special trip to take Dulwich Hamlet Football Club on a pre-season tour to Hamburg, Germany in 2018, for a unique celebratory football match with our great friends, Altona ’93. This pre-season friendly in July 2018 will mark the joint 125th anniversary of both Clubs. Dulwich Hamlet Supporters’ Trust Chair Alex Crane said: “The Dulwich Hamlet Supporters’ Trust is incredibly supportive of both the InterCity 125 appeal and the Shelter charity. It’s fantastic to see so many fans taking part in this charity walk and raising money for two great causes. We would like to wish all fans the best of luck and hope the many sponsors help them all to smash their fundraising targets. I’m sure they’ll have many fans of both Dulwich and Wingate & Finchley warmly receiving them when they arrive at the Harry Abrahams stadium” Dulwich Hamlet Supporters’ Trust info@dhst.org.uk 07951 640099 @dhstorg

When his brother Jack suggests having Dolores murdered, Judah is faced with a moral dilemma: destruction of his life, or murder. Financial Matters
The arrival of the £1m IHT threshold
T
here is an old adage that says, if it seems too good to be true, it probably is. This is often a truism when it comes to tax blazing headlines such as “IHT (Inheritance Tax) threshold hits £1m”, following the Summer Budget of 2015. The euphoria arose because the UK IHT threshold has been fixed at £325,000 since 6th April 2009. However from 6th April this year we began our march towards the realisation of an IHT threshold of £1m but the devil is in the detail. This £1m IHT threshold is being achieved through the introduction of the new cumbersome RNRB (Residential Nil Rate Band) which is then added to the existing individual IHT Nil Rate Band (NRB) of £325,000. The annual RNRB and NRB that takes us to the £1m IHT threshold is set out in Table 1.
Table 1: RNRB and NRB 2017 -2021 Fiscal Year RNRB NRB IHT Threshold 2017-18 £100,000 £325,000 £425,000 2018-19 £125,000 £325,000 £450,000 2019-20 £150,000 £325,000 £475,000 2020-21 £175,000 £325,000 £500,000
The £1m threshold is achieved from the sum of a married couple or civil partners’ individual IHT NRB and RNRB, (£500,000 x 2) from 2020-21. The £1m threshold will be effective from 2020-21, when a surviving spouse or civil partner dies on or after 6th April 2020; and their estate includes a home they had owned, or a share of one, and the home has been left to their “direct descendants”. Professional advice should be sort because the IHT threshold of £1m is not an automatic right on the death of a surviving spouse or civil partner. For example, if there was any consumption (full or partial) of the £325,000 NRB following the death of the first spouse or civil partner, the estate on the death of the surviving spouse or partner will not enjoy a £1m IHT threshold. In addition the value of the estate of the deceased should not exceed £2 million. The RNRB will also be available in cases where a deceased had downsized to a less valuable home or sold or given away their home after 7 July 2015. The direct descendants for the benefit of the RNRB is set out in Table 2. opposite. Table 2: Direct Descendants
• a spouse or civil partner of a lineal descendant (including their widow, widower or surviving civil partner) • a child, grandchild or other lineal descendant of that person • a child who is, or was at any time, that person’s stepchild • an adopted child of that person • a child who was fostered at any time by that person • a child where that person is appointed as a guardian or special guardian for that child when they’re under 18
The explicit statement of married couples or civil partners is a further IHT planning warning for cohabiting partners. In the same way that the nil rate band can be transferred between married couples any unused RNRB will also be transferable on the death of any surviving spouse or civil partner who dies after 5th April 2017, irrespective of the death of the first of the couple. The RNRB is only applicable to one home within the deceased’s estate and must have been lived in at some stage by the deceased before their death. Any property owned by a deceased which they never lived in, such as a buy-to-let property will not qualify for the RNRB. The home of a deceased can be inherited by their direct descendant via the deceased’s Will, rules of intestacy or some other legal means, to qualify for the RNRB. However, if the Will has a condition that the deceased’s grandchildren have to reach a certain age before they can inherit the home which means the property is held in a trust subject to a contingency, the RNRB wouldn’t apply. This is because the grandchildren don’t inherit the home on the death of their grandparent. The RNRB will be reduced by £1 for every £2 that the value of the estate is more than the £2 million taper threshold even if a home is left to direct descendants Whilst policy makers are championing the arrival of the £1m IHT threshold, most taxpayers are less jubilant. Further professional advice should be sort to address the thorny issues of properties in trust and property downsizing.

East Dulwich Royal Mail Sorting Office
L
ast month I related how our local sorting office and parcel collections are at risk of closing – a review is currently underway. I have booked a visit to the sorting office to see the issues there for myself and hopefully we will find a solution for it to remain open. Many thanks to everyone who has contacted me about this important issue. To raise the profile of this can, I ask that you email the Royal Mail CEO moya.greene@royalmail. com telling her why keeping this parcel collection point open is so important for our community and copy me your email. The more people that make a fuss the better our chance of keeping a Royal Mail parcels collection point here.
Please Report All Crimes A study has reported that people that report crimes are on average overall 22% less likely to become repeat victims of crime. This was broken down further showing people that reported violent crime and property theft were respectively 20% and 27% less likely to become repeat victims. If you’re the victim of a crime if it’s an emergency call 999 or non emergency crime call 101. Local Police are frustrated at people only reporting the second or third incident and how they lose valuable evidence to help frustrate further criminal acts by such partial crime reporting.
• Street trees £10,000 • East Dulwich Crime Prevention £10,000 • Normalise Chesterfield Grove/Melbourne Grove junction £15,000 As part of the crime prevention we’re ordering antipersonal attack alarms, purse bells, metal detectors, speed cameras. If you have 5 mins to spare please complete this home security survey – it really opened my eyes about things I need to change around my home: https://thecrimepreventionwebsite.com/homesecurity-assessment/468/diy-home-securitysurvey/
M&S 6am Deliveries? The new hugely successful M&S store on Lordship Lane has applied to increase its delivery hours. In writing M&S have admitted even their smaller delivery lorries can’t maneuver around their brand new servicing yard. They have applied to start deliveries directly from Lordship lane from 6am Monday to Friday rather than the currently approved 7am. We think this is too anti-social and have objected. What do you think?

The Last Word - Adam Norsworthy
Adam Norsworthy I am Adam Norsworthy. Dulwich resident, singer, songwriter, musician. Solo artist and singer and guitarist The Mustangs, one of the UK’s mostestablished blues-rock bands.
How long have you lived in the area? After some time away in Singapore and the USA, the family settled in Dulwich in 1980. My parents bought their house in 1968 though. I’ve been here pretty much all my life.
What has changed most during that time? Apart from my height? The obvious answer is the gentrification of Lordship Lane which has been remarkable….a similar thing keeps threatening to happen in West Norwood, and with the cinema opening next year who knows? We live in hope.
What do you most value about the area? It’s fairly quiet and I have everything I need within walking distance – a high street one way and some great artisan shops the other. I have three train stations in short walking distance too.
What one thing would you change? The ugly BT building on the corner of my road. I presume it’s a functional building but it’s like Willy Wonka’s factory – I’ve never seen anyone go in…. or come out.
Where’s your favourite place to walk? Dulwich Woods is beautiful in the Summer – the sunlight flashing through the trees and the rustle of the leaves on the breeze. I’ve got lost in there many times.
When I want to relax... I put my feet up at home and listen to some vinyl, watch a BBC4 documentary or reruns of Horizon. Often falling asleep on the sofa til the early hours.
What is your favourite shop? The vinyl record stalls at Haynes Lane Market in Crystal Palace, but shhh, don’t tell anyone!
Famous people you’ve seen or met?
The book I’m reading at the moment..
I nearly crashed into Micky Flanagan in East Dulwich a while back. James Nesbitt, Iain Glenn, Jo Brand. All the usual Dulwich glitterati. Huw Edwards has coffee in my local deli.. and I kicked a ball into Maggie Thatcher’s garden once but sadly she didn’t come out and punt it back.
I have a pile of rock biographies by my bed but I’m actually reading a book called ‘Blitzed’ about Hitler’s drug addiction, which makes some rock stars look like choirboys.
What is your favourite place to eat? Trattoria Rafaelle in Sydenham is a fantastic Family-run Italian. But since it was listed as one of London’s best restaurants in Time Out I can’t get a table there!
The best meal I’ve ever had.. Would be a toss up between a pastrami bagel one drunken night in New York, and a baked potato one freezing night camping in the New Forest – both were just perfect for the moment. 48 | SE22 - May 2017
My secret ambition.. I used to want to be a guest on the Simpsons…. but I think that ship has sailed now, so I’ll settle for something more realistic like our new album outselling Adel and Ed Sheeran. The Mustangs new album, Just Passing Through, was released on April 7th. Adam & the Mustangs will be appearing at Belair House on May 19th as part of the Dulwich Festival www.themustangs.co.uk www.adamnorsworthy.co.uk
