What a fabulous month October was! There was so much happening in and around Dulwich. I was delighted to work with Dulwich Books on the Dulwich Literary Festival and thoroughly enjoyed the final event with East Dulwich resident Helen Lederer. You can see pictures on our facebook page. October saw the launch of The Dulwich Book which I am honoured to be in! Find out more on pages 30 & 31 including details of a special event. Our local charity Dulwich Helpline and Southwark Church Care changed their name last month to Link Age Southwark. Find out more on page 16. with our new name we will build on our success in Dulwich and beyond, broaden our appeal and reach more volunteers from across the generations to prevent loneliness and isolation among our older friends and neighbours.

Who do you help?

Link Age Southwark is a vibrant local charity based in Dulwich Hospital. On 19th October 2015, the charity changed its name from Dulwich Helpline and Southwark Churches Care to Link Age Southwark.

What does your charity do?

Last year we supported over 600 older people across the Borough. Anyone over 60 years old is eligible for our service if they want to get out, meet new people, or would benefit from a weekly visit in their home from a volunteer. 20% of the older people we support are over 90 years old. And the average age is 83. Sadly, we have a growing waiting list of people who are homebound and lonely, or who cannot leave the house without someone to lend a helping hand.

For more than 20 years we have been providing friendly volunteer support to older people in Dulwich and beyond. We match volunteer visitors up with older people to combat isolation and loneliness. And we run 20 groups across the Borough, with activities ranging from crafts and computers to singing and yoga. Volunteers also accompany older people on trips to the shops, offer lifts, and provide practical help around the house and garden.

Why did you change your name?

In 2012, two local charities – Dulwich Helpline and Southwark Churches Care – merged. The resulting name was too long and didn’t accurately reflect the work that we do. So we worked with our supporters to find a new name and tagline: Link Age Southwark: Communities supporting older people. We hope that

We are so lucky to have so many dedicated volunteers who are united by their desire to improve older people’s quality of life. Volunteers are from all ages and walks of life - many live in and around Dulwich. We take care to match volunteers to activities which suit them and to use the skills and time that people offer us.

So, We Didn’t Win! By Sarah Pylas

e were disappointed for a split second, but then quickly agreed that just being a finalist for Best Website at the Association of Independent Magazine Publishers’ Awards was praise enough for our fab little website and it still deserved a big pat on the back (end). So to celebrate, we packed Around Dulwich off to a day spa for tired Wordpress sites and treated it to a shiny new makeover. The transformation is amazing! Our homepage has had a total face-lift - the layout has undergone a few nips and tucks, and a lot of the excess weight it was carrying around its sidebar area has been redistributed and smoothed over. It is now the younger, fresher trophy wife of SE Magazines. Like every good trophy wife, it is important to have a front row ticket to all the hottest events in town. And, as the official media partner for the first Dulwich Literary Festival, Around Dulwich was right there on the main stage of the Old Library at Dulwich College. Vince Cable opened the festival to talk about his book ‘After the Storm’ and was on fine form. Other events included talks from Melvyn Bragg, Huw Edwards and the hilarious Helen Lederer. We went along to Helen’s stand-up performance, where she talked about women in comedy, the perils of appearing on telly in your swimming costume, and her fab book ‘Losing It’. Helen stuck around for a chat afterwards while she signed copies of her book and had us all in more stitches than from our recent facelift… The streets of Dulwich had a spooky makeover for Halloween as green-faced witches, dragons, devils, vampires and Elsa’s (?!) trick or treated

their way around every house brave enough to leave a pumpkin outside its front porch. Now with the second half of the school term underway, I feel I can really start to enjoy the runup to the festive season. I’m particularly looking forward to Bonfire Night at Dulwich Sports Club on 7 November. It’s always such a fun event for all the family and the fireworks display is quite spectacular! The One Tree Grand Christmas Fair, St. John’s Christmas Fair on Goose Green, and the Love West Dulwich Christmas Fair are all on towards the end of this month and provide a wonderful opportunity to support local businesses and have your shopping all wrapped up before December. If you can’t hold on that long, then why not pop along to the Twisted-Vintage Jewellery & Reddskin Christmas Shopping Event on 6-7 November; or drop-in to the first of Jessica Walker’s Festive Opening hours in Dulwich Village on 11th November and enjoy 20% off as well. Scents of Occasion

t is that time of the year when we start welcoming guests into our home with more regularity. After a summer, of breezy open windows, the cosseted winter months can be less forgiving when it comes to the array of aromas trapped in our home. The interesting thing about our sense of smell is that we are designed to stop smelling that same scent after a relatively short time, a biological throw back to when we needed to detect new threats on the horizon. So whilst you might only be aware of the vase of flowers you have just titivated an incomer will be treated to rich whiffs of everything from damp dog to the monkfish you fried earlier. The best way to go about fragrancing your home for an event is to imagine your scent scheme like the lighting, you want a subtle background scent and bursts of accent aroma in key areas. If you have a hallway start there, you cannot beat a vase of fresh flowers – roses give off the most scent, or lilies, but remember the pollen of lilies is poisonous to cats. The Fresh Flower Company on North Cross Road creates a beautiful arrangement with fronds of mint. A diffuser is another good option and if your home is large you can dot them on a couple of floors or at different ends. Strategically place scented candles to create scent zones. Always use a good quality candle; you want a clean burn so avoid cheap paraffin wax and it should contain a high concentration of fragrance oil. If your background scent is woody or herby your accent aroma could be something softer and more floral. However, I am rather taken by the current trend for fireside smells – look for a candle containing birch tar. After around 15 minutes most candles will have yielded their optimum scent so extinguish them and the molten wax with continue to fragrance. Relight when the wax has set again. Never burn a scented candle all evening (the burning time shown on the label is the total, not one session) and do remember to trim the wick – nail scissors are perfect for this. Potpourri is so passé I recently witnessed someone unaware of what it was trying to eat it. I predict a

revival, but in the meantime a bowl of pinecones spiked with fir or cypress essential oil works a treat and is unlikely to be eaten. If you are lucky enough to have an open fire, pinecones thrown on create a natural burst of aroma as do cedar wood chips, but make sure you are using a fireguard to avoid any stray airborne ignited bits. Try to avoid bombing your party with blasts of commercial aerosol air fresheners; especially in private areas where they act like an olfactory alarm that the bathroom has been used. Keep a natural room spray to hand for guests, one with a high concentration of forgiving essential oils. You can also flood your home with the welcoming scent of mulled wine on simmer in the kitchen; red wine, cinnamon sticks, star anise and nutmeg, with orange and lemon rind. What a welcome. ovember has arrived and Bonfire Night is just around the corner, so I thought it would be fun to offer some inspiration for those of you who will be coming in cold from a firework display. It wouldn’t be Bonfire Night without Jacket Potatoes – Vivaldi, Sante and Melody are the best varieties to use. Inexpensive, full of vitamins and minerals and fat-free – what’s not to love? Make sure you prick them, and then cover in Olive Oil and Salt; don’t wrap them in foil unless you are going to cook them directly in the flames of a bonfire or BBQ. Partner them up with my delicious Chilli Sin Carne and you’ve got a guaranteed crowd pleaser for all your guests.

Chilli Sin Carne - Serves 4

A fantastic alternative to traditional chilli suitable for vegetarians and meat eaters alike. For the sauce (if you want to cheat substitute with a jar of passata)!! • 1 level teaspoon cayenne pepper, plus extra for sprinkling • 1 heaped teaspoon ground cumin, plus extra for sprinkling • 1 level teaspoon ground cinnamon, plus extra for sprinkling • Sea salt & freshly ground black pepper • Olive oil • 1 Onion • 2 Cloves garlic • 1 Fresh red chilli • 1 Fresh green chilli • 2 x 400g tinned chipped tomatoes For ‘padding’ • 2 Medium sized sweet potatoes, peeled and cut into bite size chunks • 1 Butternut squash, peeled and cut into bite size chunks • 1 Red &1 yellow pepper • A bunch of fresh coriander • 2 x 400g tinned kidney beans (or chickpea, pinto or cannellini all work fine)

Method 1) Pre-heat the oven to 200oc, 400of, gas mark 6. Sprinkle the potatoes and squash with a pinch each of cayenne, cumin, cinnamon, salt and pepper. Drizzle with olive oil and toss to coat, then spread out on a baking tray and set aside. 14 | SE22 - November 2015

Vegetables & Herbs - Artichoke, beetroot, Brussels tops, cabbages, cardoons, carrots, celeriac, celery, chard, chicory, endive, greens, kale, leeks, lettuce, onions, parsnips, potatoes, pumpkins, salsify, swede, turnips, nettles, watercress. Meat & Game - Wild goose, grouse, hare, mallard, partridge, pheasant, rabbit, wood pigeon. Fish & Shellfish - Code, crab, lobster, mackerel, mussels, oysters, prawns, scallops, sea bass, sprats, squid, whiting. 2) Peel and roughly chop the onion, then peel and finely chop the garlic. 3) Pick the coriander leaves and put aside, then finely chop the stalks. 4) Deseed and finely chop the chillies. 5) Place the sweet potatoes & squash in the hot oven for 40 minutes, or until soft and golden. 6) Meanwhile, put a large pan over a medium-high heat and add 2 tablespoons olive oil. Add the onion, and garlic and cook for 5 minutes. 7) Add the coriander stalks, chilli and spices and cook for another 5-10 minutes, or until softened, stirring every couple of minutes. 8) Halve, deseed and roughly chop the peppers. 9) Drain the beans, then tip them into the pan with the tinned tomatoes. Charter School G reat news that the Charter East Dulwich School has been transferred some of the Dulwich Hospital land so they can get cracking organising the temporary classrooms needed to open September 2016 and to start planning and building permanent facilities. The bad news is that temporary pedestrian access and for 9 cars per day is proposed to be from Jarvis Road via Melbourne Grove.

This part of Melbourne Grove already has 5,000 vehicles each day. The Charter project team believe only a tiny minority of pupils will be driven to and from school. A transport study is now underway to inform our decisions about the temporary and long-term access for this school and indeed the replacement health facilities. Relocated Sub Post Office – 393 Lordship Lane Recently the sub post office near Dulwich Library relocated to 393 Lordship Lane. The move came with a large increase in opening hours but a few rarely used services would no longer be available there. Please give me feedback on your experiences of the new sub post office?

North Dulwich station (557th) is likely to gets lifts around 2062! But step free access to the platform doesn’t make it easy to get on and off local trains. The platforms were designed for 1860’s steam trains with steps on the train to get into carriages. We need step free access from the entrance ONTO the trains. Apart from making trains more accessible for all it makes it quicker for passengers to get on and off of trains helping them keep to timetables. The London Bridge station rebuild could have raised all the platforms for level access but after lengthy deliberations decided to keep the status quo – platforms at heights for 1860’s steam trains!

The Dulwich Notebook

new book about Dulwich has landed on the shelves of local bookshops: The Dulwich Notebook. First it will challenge your assumptions about the size of Dulwich – historically, it is much bigger than most people realise because Dulwich is defined by the ancient Manor of Dulwich (now The Dulwich Estate). One of Shakespeare’s fellow actors – Edward Alleyn – bought it in the early seventeenth century and soon established a chapel, the Old College and Almshouses, which survive to this day at the back of the Dulwich Picture Gallery. But Dulwich is more than just the Village. The book covers the whole of Dulwich, dividing it into four areas: the Village of course, West Dulwich, South Dulwich around Sydenham Hill Station, and finally East Dulwich, which is outside The Dulwich Estate but a vital component of the modern neighbourhood. Torla Evans, former Head of Photography at the Museum of London took most of the photographs which illustrate the book - historical material, vibrant contemporary shots of artists in their studios, shop interiors, and portraits of some local ‘movers and shakers’ - for instance John Major, the chief Executive of The Dulwich Estate, Ingrid Beazley who introduced street art to Dulwich, and Angela Burgess, the founder and editor of this magazine. And if you think Dulwich is of one piece you may have to revise your opinion: the book

demonstrates the astonishing variety encountered in this suburb. The Village and West Dulwich are the oldest parts; South Dulwich is next, developed after the arrival of the Crystal Palace in the 1850s, and finally East Dulwich which is essentially late Victorian and from the start, the shopping mall of the whole district.

The Village

The book explores its landmarks, for instance the schools, picture gallery, the park or Belair; but it also rummages in the Village’s side streets and back gardens to show exciting new developments that have taken place in the last few years: for instance the striking Huf houses hidden at the end of Woodyard Lane.

West Dulwich

John Ruskin, the great Victorian art critic still haunts this part of Dulwich. He thought Croxted Lane was paradise until Crystal Palace appeared: ‘Then the Crystal Palace came, forever spoiling the view through all its compass, and bringing every show-day, from London, flood of pedestrians down the footpath who left it filthy with cigar ashes for the rest of the week.’ One of the book’s highlights is the juxtaposition of some of John Ruskin’s vivid texts describing his life in Herne Hill (and his frequent excursions to Dulwich) with the experience of a contemporary Herne Hill resident. Her narrative follows closely

The Dulwich Notebook Ruskin’s own narrative, enabling the reader to appreciate the contrast between past and present.

South Dulwich

The greatest concentration of open spaces is in South Dulwich which boasts woods, a golf course, playing fields and allotments. The views from the top of Grange Lane allotments are exhilarating and were selected by The Guardian for its Britain’s Best Views series. The Horniman Museum presides over this relatively unspoilt corner of London. As its collections cover the natural world and civilisations close to it, the museum is a perfect fit for South Dulwich.

East Dulwich

The Dulwich Notebook offers a snapshot of life in Dulwich in our times. One of the most lively sections of the book deals with some of East Dulwich’s wonderful shops such as William Rose butchers, Moxons fishmongers, La Cave de Bruno and Franklins Farm Shop and Restaurant. This slice of delicious consumption is counterbalanced by a bold injection of street art, which the book chronicles in some detail.

Fraud Awareness Week 15th - 21st November

ovember was formerly known as Movemberfor raising awareness ofmen's healthissues via the growth of moustaches. However November is increasingly becoming known for being home to International Fraud Awareness Week (IFAW), this year 15th - 21st November. This year’s scene has been set with the recent publication by Financial Fraud Action UK (FFA UK) of its figures that revealed financial fraud losses rose by 6% in the first half of 2015. In monetary terms, fraud losses on payment cards, online and telephone banking and cheques reached £325.3 million in the six months January to June 2015. These results highlight an aggressive move by fraudsters to target individuals directly. As we approach IFAW it is essential that individuals are reminded of some action to help protect themselves from these fraudsters. In recent months, fraudsters have added professional firms such as solicitors and accountants to their hit list and applied the same tactics as deployed against households. This begs the questions; is nobody safe? And what can we do? Whilst the jury may still be out in response to the first question, a two stage approach can be applied to increase our safeguarding. Firstly, the UK banks have issued a Joint Declaration, which we should all be aware of and share with others. The five elements of the UK Banks Joint Declaration are, your bank or the police will never: 1) Telephone you to ask for your 4-digit card PIN or your online banking password, not even by tapping them into the telephone keypad; 2) Ask you to withdraw money to hand over to them for safe-keeping; 3) Ask you to transfer money to a new account for fraud reasons, even if they say it is in your name;

obvious or common sense; it has not been the case for some households or the professional firm that transferred £0.5m to fraudsters earlier this year following a telephone call. In this heightened era of fraud alert the temptation to let your guard down or engage in that blind trust should be resisted. The following seven part action plan from Financial Fraud Action UK can be adopted to complement the UK Banks Joint Declaration: 1) Ensure you have the most up-to-date security software installed on your computer, including antivirus. Some banks offer free security software: check your bank’s website for details. 2) Only shop on secure websites. Before entering card details ensure that the locked padlock or unbroken key symbol is showing in your browser. 3) Always be suspicious of unsolicited emails that are supposedly from a reputable organisation, such as your bank or the tax office and do not click on any links in the email. 4) Make sure you are the only person who knows the PIN for your card. 5) Shield the PIN with your free hand whenever you type it into a keypad in a shop or at a cash machine. 6) Check your bank and card statements for unusual transactions. If you spot any let your bank or card company know as soon as possible. 7) Shred statements, receipts and documents that contain information relating to your financial affairs when you dispose of them. Some banks offer paperless statements. These twin elements should be incorporated into an integrated fraud protection strategy and not just for International Fraud Awareness Week.

4) Send someone to your home to collect your cash, PIN, payment card or cheque book if you are a victim of fraud; 5) Ask you to purchase goods using your card and then hand them over for safe-keeping. Although some readers may gasp, at these, as 32 | SE22 - November 2015

Winter at your window Create Structure Opt for an evergreen skeleton of something like box or Hebe interpersed with shorter bedding plants that can be changed seasonally. A row of box with a striking band of winter-flowering pansies or viola for colour and a small delicate ivy trailing down in front is a classic look. Or try Muehlenbeckia complexa or Helicrysum petiolare as a nice alternative to ivy. Planting in odd numbers works best, so choose three key plants and repeat them or go for symmetry, with say some tall ferns or grasses in the middle and plants mirroring each other either side.

Harmonise With Your Exterior A lovely window box can give your house an instant lift. They tend to need refreshing seasonally, and as winter sets in, it’s a great time to add a bit of cheering colour, texture and interest to your exterior. Here are a few pointers.

Think About Aspect How much sun is your window box going to get? Evergreen shrubs like Skimmia japonica ‘Rubella’ and box are fine in shade, as are plants like cyclamen, hellebore and evergreen ferns. For south facing positions you could use sun-lovers like lavender, which will still have nice silvery leaves in winter or evergreen herbs like rosemary, thyme and ornamental sage. Or for a bit of zing you could go for orange Solanum ‘Thurino’ with its bright orange fruit or fiery pink ornamental grass like Pennisetum ‘Fireworks’, nice teamed with rich plum heuchera. For a festive look combine red berried Skimmia japonica ‘Pabella’ or red cyclamen with silvery Calocephalus brownii (Silver Bush). Heathers also prefer sun.

Keep It Simple Limiting your colour palette will avoid things looking too busy. You can’t go wrong with an all green and white colour scheme – very pretty for Christmas – or purple and silver, say with ornamental kale or cabbage set off with silver foliage. And try to limit your plants to one, two or three different varieties. As a rule of thumb choose plants that generally compliment each other, but with an element of contrast to lift the whole scheme. 34 | SE22 - November 2015

Before you go mad at the garden center think about the colours of your door and paintwork and even interior - a friend recently bought red berried plants for her window box only to find they looked all wrong from her purpled- hued sitting room. And bear in mind the style of your house. A mass of one plant such as heather, cyclamen or evergreen grasses looks elegant and contemporary, especially if it’s in a zinc or black trough. Neatly clipped box interspersed with cyclamen is smart and looks more traditional if in a terracotta box with swathes of ivy.

Get Stuck In Choose a container with drainage holes and cover them with a layer of broken terracotta pots or grit to prevent the drainage holes getting clogged up with soil. Arrange plants in their pots until you’re happy, then knock them out and plant them up. Fill the gaps with compost, firm down and water. Water when the earth feels dry – but make sure they don’t get too soggy. In wet weather it might be worth raising the window box up on feet to avoid this.

Have Fun! The main thing is that because the planting isn’t permanent you can experiment and have fun. These are some guidelines but of course it’s all a matter of personal choice and if you’re feeling bold, and wish to stand out, clashing colours and more adventurous mixes can look amazing. £4000 raised for charity! Club’s ‘pay what you like’ game raises over £4000 for charity

t seems widely accepted among the Clubs supporters that Hamlet are yet to hit their best form this season, so to find ourselves placed second in the league is testament to the team that has been put together at Champion Hill this season and the expectations that are brought with it. Since our last update, Hamlet have gone from thumping victories to disappointingly dropped points within the space of a fixture. Lowly placed VCD Athletic and Farnborough were dispatched without mercy or even the need for Hamlet to grind into top gear. The VCD game was chosen as the club’s own celebration of ‘Non-League Day’, a week earlier than the official celebration on 10thOctober, the gates of Champion Hill were opened for the community to ‘pay what they like’ for the fixture. After match day costs, the remainder of the gate takings were distributed between the British Heart Foundation and local mental health charity, Cool Tan Arts. With an attendance of 1961, over £4000 was split between the charities. Those visiting for the first time were certainly given a taste of Hamlet’s swaggering style. It took all of three minutes for Damian Scannell to deliver a ball to onrushing Erskine who calmly slotted home. Dulwich built on this earlier lead with another goal from Erskine before Nelson, Murrell-Williamson and exciting young midfielder Josh Fernandes saw

Hamlet five nil up with ten minutes left on the clock. The closing period of the game saw VCD grab a couple of consolation goals to add some respectability to the score line but with seven goals and £4000 raised for charity, those within Champion Hill surely felt they’d gained value for money no matter what they had chosen to pay for their entrance. The last few weeks also saw mixed fortunes in the cups. The FA Cup dream is over for another year after defeat to Whitehawk, but it was better news in the Alan Turvey Cup as Hamlet overcame Staines. Link Age Southwark Events The climb over the O2 in September was a fund-raisng initiative towards creating a Dementia garden in grounds of The Elms Residential Care Home in East Dulwich. Why dogs should be on a lead

ne of my pet hates is people who walk their dog off lead on the street. Yes, a few dogs may be extraordinarily obedient, with no interest in chasing small furries or mobbing every person they see, but they are the exception. I have witnessed more than one hound suddenly dart across a busy road, its owner screaming, unable to intervene. I have also seen a dog killed after running out of the local park, straight under the wheels of a bus. All avoidable had the owners used a lead. The law is ambiguous and confusing. There is no law that states that dogs have to be on a lead on public footpaths, however it is a criminal offence for a dog to be on a designated road off lead. It is also a criminal offence for a dog to be dangerously out of control in a public place. A dog that darts across the road off lead and causes a crash, may put its owner in prison. A top reason for ‘lead avoidance’ is owner laziness, pure and simple. People moan- “but he pulls too much”, or “he doesn’t like the lead, he’s much better off”. Some prefer to go ‘hands free’ so they can walk and talk on their mobile phones. Others just think having a dog off lead looks cool. Let’s be clear, no dog is born with ‘lead instinct’ but they are born with a strong instinct to chase things that move. Unless taught how to walk on a lead properly, most dogs will try to get from A-Z as fast as they can and if that means dragging you with them, they will. But, just about any dog, with consistent training and the right equipment, can be taught to walk nicely on the lead and they should be taught, as early as possible. This does not mean using an extending lead; I’ve seen dogs injured on those too, suddenly whizzing across the road into moving traffic, after their owner had forgotten to secure the stopper. This is all about teaching the dog to walk beside its owner, on a short, loose lead, without pulling. Many dogs get nervous on the lead as they realise they don’t have the ability to avoid stuff that scares

them; others get frustrated at being unable to get to the stuff that interests them, like other dogs or people. Either can cause unruly behaviour, like lunging and barking, and make owners think leads are a bad idea. Make no mistake, if a dog is nervous around other dogs having all dogs on the lead means every owner can use distance and avoidance to keep control. The last thing the owner of a hyper or nervous dog needs is to suddenly be confronted with an off lead dog in the street. The same goes for people, and a growing number of children, who are terrified of dogs. A dog on a lead not only looks safer; it is safer. The same applies to the park. If you see a dog that is on the lead there is a reason why. It may be old, it may be nervous, it may be in season, it may be injured. Give that dog a wide berth, do not allow yours to run up to it off lead- it does not matter how friendly your dog is or means to be, if the other dog is on a lead don’t go there. The message is simple, unless your dog is 100% obedient, under any level of distraction, at any distance, then please, use a lead!

andi Toksvig is well known for her television and radio work as a presenter, writer and actor. She has written more than twenty fiction and non-fiction books for both children and adults. How long have you lived in the area? I moved here last November with my wife Debbie. She used to live in the area and always wanted to come back.

What has changed most during that time? Our house. I thought we bought a place that didn't need doing up but Debbie has had a very different view. I sometimes wish the people we bought it from would come back and look. They would not recognise the place.

What do you most value about the street you live in? We have lovely neighbours. There is a really nice atmosphere of kindness. I have never met so many people taking in parcels for each other.

Describe your perfect weekend

My perfect holiday

It never happens but I would love two days in a row with nothing to do. On the Saturday I would stroll down Lordship Lane, pop to the market on North Cross Street and chat to Dave the carpet man, have lunch at Franklins and buy a lovely supper for later. Sunday would be at home roasting a duck from William Rose followed by a walk through Dulwich Park to the Picture Gallery for a cup of tea and a hint of culture. Perfect.

Is anywhere my wife wants to go. She is the nicest person I know and any place is improved by her presence.

The book I'm reading at the moment

I love the Nunhead Cemetary. It's a magnificent necropolis full of history where nature spends every day trying to take over.

Is research for the sequel I am writing to my novel 'A Slice of the Moon'. It's a book about the Oregon trail which is the route pioneers too in the 1840's across the United States to the Pacific coast. It's called 'The Oregon Trail' and it was written in 1846 by Francis Parkman who made the trip as a 'summer juant'.
