Around Dulwich with Sarah Pylas

W

ell, hello there November! As we wash our hands clean of Halloween face paints for another year and finish the last batch of pumpkin soup, fireworks begin to light up our skies ready for Bonfire night. The Lambeth Fireworks at Brockwell Park (3 November) promises not one, but two dazzling fireworks displays! There will also be street food traders and a family fun fair to add to the excitement. Dulwich Sports Club invites you to their family firework display (3 November) and a new and improved layout will mean more food and beverage stalls than ever before! Southwark Council is delivering its fifteenth pyrotechnic extravaganza in Southwark Park to mark Fireworks Night this year (5 November). The display is free to residents and one of few fireworks events in the capital to fall on the very night Guy Fawkes was discovered guarding explosives beneath parliament. Our high street also begins to sparkle, as festive cheer takes over from mid-November. At the St. Barnabus Christmas Bazaar (17 November) there’s an opportunity to start your Christmas shopping early with over 30 local designers and artists selling a variety of goods ranging from jewellery, ceramics, glassware and preserves. The Love West Dulwich Christmas Fair (24 November) is celebrating its fifth year and will take place throughout West Dulwich on Park Hall Road, Croxted Road and Rosendale Road in SE21. On the day, there will be festive activities for the whole family including a Santa’s Grotto at Wigwam Toy Shop, children’s story time at Dulwich Books, and a treasure hunt. SoLo Craft Fair is holding a Christmas Craft market in the heart of Dulwich Village (24 November) at St. Barnabus Parish Hall. Over 50 independent traders will be selling the best in handmade crafts and there will also be a bar selling Christmas tipples. The Charter School North Dulwich will be holding its annual Christmas Fair (29 November) where local artists and designers will be selling their work including gorgeous vintage jewellery, handmade scarves and accessories, home-made jams and jellies, plants, and limited edition prints. The Handmade Collective London is a group of South London artists, designers and makers, celebrating and promoting art and creativity in our local area. They are holding pop-up shopping

events in the run-up to Christmas at The Ivy House pub (17 November), 10 Walters Way, SE23 (24-25 November) and fiftyseven, North Cross Road (1 December). Other highlights this month include Tea and Time, a newly launched club at Christ Church, Barry Road, aimed at anyone over the age of 60 who would like to meet other folks in the local area (Mondays at 10.30am). Following their sell-out UK tour, the Scummy Mummies will be performing their new show at the Catford Broadway Theatre (9 November) complete with new songs, new sketches and new catsuits! Link Age Southwark is hosting a 25th birthday gala dinner with Jo Brand at Dulwich College (15 November). Tickets are limited, but it should be a glorious evening of fine dining and entertainment including a raffle, auction and some wonderful musical performances. The festivities continue next month with The Dulwich Charity Lunch (6 December) at The Palmerston. As always, they are looking to raise a bumper amount for Link Age Southwark to support their work in helping older people maintain active lives in the community. Please contact angela@ semagazines.co.uk to book a ticket to the event, or to donate a prize for the auction and raffle. Details of all local events and ticket information can be found on our website and on Instagram @arounddulwich.

Garden Talk with Janine Winlaw

Winter Window Boxes Now’s the time to smarten up window boxes for the winter season. Here’s how.

Make A Plan A visit to your local garden centre is a great way to get inspiration, but do some planning first. Measure your container for a rough idea of how many plants to buy. And think about the style and colour of your house - exterior and interior - you might fall for an orange plant, but will it clash from inside your sitting room?

Thrillers, Spillers, Fillers You could block plant a simple row of white cyclamen or dusky pink heather– contemporary and stylish. But for more variety, it’s useful to think ‘thrillers’, tall evergreen plants for structure, ‘spillers’ like ivy to trail down containers and ‘fillers’, for the gaps. Compact evergreen shrubs such as pretty small-leaved hebes make good structural ‘thrillers’ as does Skimmia x confusa ‘Kew Green’ – go for symmetry here, one or three. For something bright and festive Skimmia japonica ‘Nymans’ has jolly red berries, Gaultheria Procumbens pink ones and Solanum Capsicastrum has cheery orange fruit like tiny clementines. Silvery Calocephalus brownii (Silver Bush) is also very Christmassy – especially teamed with red cyclamen. Evergreen ferns such as asplenium (hart’s tongue) or ornamental grasses such as coppery Anemanthele lessoniana (Pheasant’s grass) provide interesting form and leaf texture. As an alternative to classic ivy, my favourite ‘spiller’ is Muehlenbeckia complexa – maidenhair vine, with an abundance of springy burgundy stems lined with fresh green round leaves. Otherwise soft silvery leaved Helichrysum petiolare looks good with whites purples and pinks. If you want colour, use fillers such as winter flowering viola or pansies – which come in everything from dark purple to orange and will keep flowering through the winter if deadheaded. Dusky pink or white hellebores such as Heleborus niger look great and I love the silvery foliage of H. ‘Silver Dollar’. For bigger containers heucheras, with their large handsome evergreen leaves in everything 12 | SE22 - November 2018

from rich plum to lime or orange brighten up a winter day. The dramatic purple variety ‘Obsidian’ complements cool steely blue Festuca glauca for a smart window box combo. And for a spring surprise, underplant the whole box with bulbs such as dainty Iris reticulate, crocus, daffodils an muscari.

Design As a rule, restricting your colours to two or three will avoid your planter looking like a fruit salad as a design teacher once described it. The same goes for plant varieties – ideally go for plants that have similarities, adding an element of contrast for interest. But whether you’re drawn to a simple colour scheme of white and green or something more exuberant, it’s all a matter of personal choice. The best way of getting combinations you like is to put them together at the garden centre and keep changing them until you’re happy. After all, it’s only temporary, so you can afford to be a bit experimental.

Practicalities When you get your plants come, it’s a good idea to empty old compost and start again. Cover drainage holes with broken terracotta pots or grit. Arrange the plants and fill the gaps with potting compost – adding grit if the plants need good drainage, firm down and water. Janine Winlaw - Writer & Gardener Follow me on instagram @janinewinlaw

Food & Drink with Suzanne James

Easy Vegan Gluten-Free Brownies Makes 9 Brownies In October we cooked for a wonderful Bride and Groom at a wedding that was attended by Emma Thompson, Colin Firth, Greg Wise, Imelda Staunton, Jim Carter, Derek Jacobi, Ben Elton and many more. To accommodate quite a few special diets we created this wonderful Gluten Free Vegan Brownie! Ingredients • 2 batches of flax eggs (2 tbsp (14g) of flaxseed meal + 5 tbsp (75ml) of water) • Half a cup of melted coconut oil • Half a cup of coconut sugar • Quarter of a cup of maple syrup (or agave nectar) • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract • Three quarters of a teaspoon of baking powder • Quarter teaspoon sea salt • Half cup unsweetened cocoa powder • Three quarters of a cup of Gluten Free Oat Flour • Quarter cup of corn meal • One third of a cup of pecans or walnuts (optional) • One third of a cup of vegan chocolate chips (optional) Method • First preheat the oven to 3500F (1760C) and lightly grease an 8”x8” baking dish with coconut oil, then line with parchment paper • Prepare flax eggs in a small mixing bowl. • In a large mixing bowl add melted coconut oil, coconut sugar, maple syrup and vanilla extract. Whisk thoroughly to combine and start dissolving the coconut sugar. • Add flax eggs and whisk once more until combined. Then add baking powder, sea salt, and cocoa power and whisk. • Add gluten-free oat flour and corn meal and fold with a spatula until just mixed. Then add desired add-ins (optional), such as vegan chocolate chips or nuts. • Add the batter to the prepared baking dish and spread into an even layer with a rubber spatula. Add a few additional toppings if desired, such as chocolate chips and nuts (optional). 14 | SE22 - November 2018

• Bake for 17-22 minutes, or until the edges appear dry and slightly fluffy and the center is no longer wet or sticky. • Remove from the oven and let cool in the pan for at least 10 minutes, preferably 45 minutes - 1 hour (the longer they cool, the less tender they will be). Then gently lift out of pan and use a sharp knife to cut into desired number of squares (I woud suggest 9). • These are delicious on their own, but we served it with poached pear, coconut cream and cinnamon. For an easy option go for Ice Cream or Whipped Cream! • Completely cooled leftovers don’t tend to hang around for long, but will last a few days at room temperature in an airtight container or in the freezer up to 1 month.

Fitness tips with Leanne Spencer

The concept of the energy jar

I

want to firstly introduce the concept of an energy jar; it’s not a literal jar in the body obviously, but the idea that we have one receptacle, one place where our energy is stored. What I mean by that is we tend to think we’ve got energy for home, energy for work, energy for the gym and I know a lot of people will go and have a difficult week at work, get into the gym and put themselves through a hard workout, and find they don’t have the energy to do it. That’s because their energy has already been depleted. We need to pace ourselves like an athlete would. They’ll look at their energy reserves, they’ll look at the demands being put on them and their schedule and they’ll ebb and flow, they’ll adapt. We as corporate or business athletes, if you like, tend to see ourselves as having to operate at a high level all the time. This is simply not going to happen, that’s how you burn out. If you do find that you’re lacking in energy, here are a few things that you can use, and they’re entirely free of charge. Light is the first thing. I’ve got big windows here flooding the office with light. I use light in the mornings as soon as I wake up to give me a little shot of energy. That also helps to kick start my circadian rhythm. Light is something that you can use, natural light but also blocking out blue light later in the day that can suppress melatonin and therefore impact our sleep. Movement is another thing that’s very energising. Have a standing desk, stand up when you’re taking phone calls at your desk perhaps. You can just put some books underneath your laptop to make a standing desk but get moving. A constant level of daily movement is very energising. It’s when we sit still and static that that problems arise, and we tend to feel underenergised. Cold water is another one that you can use. I’m a big fan of a cold shower in the morning. It took me awhile to get there. To start with I would splash cold water onto my face, then I would

16 | SE22 - November 2018

crank the tap onto cold for the last few seconds of a shower and now I can pretty much do two minutes. It’s shivery, it’s gaspy, it’s unpleasant, but it sets you up well for the day because if you can start your day like that, almost anything seems easier the rest of the day. Heartfulness is another thing that I find very energising and empowering. This is contribution, it’s doing something for other people or something that’s not related to you. Volunteering would be one example. It’s about giving back in some way. The feeling that creates is very energising, but it’s also about doing something for you. Many people I talk to have just forgotten about their hobbies, they don’t have time to do anything for themselves any more. It’s either work or it’s family and there’s not much in between. Just reconnect with a hobby or something you used to enjoy, even if it’s just ten minutes a day. Leanne Spencer @BodyshotPT www.bodyshotperformance.com

Education News from Alleyn's

All Children are Artists Sally Reynolds, Head of Art at Alleyn’s, tells us how to encourage our children’s artistic development.

Why is Art so good for us? Art has a unique place in the human psyche; combining both the intellectual and emotional faculties. Engaging in the creative process can be a deeply personal and rewarding one in which art allows a space for reflection and for making sense of the world. “All children are artists. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up.” Pablo Picasso Making art is serious play and is an important expressive outlet for children, giving them the freedom to experiment, develop their imagination, and providing fun and relaxation. For teenagers, it is a tool they can use to explore their own identity and interests, often making work about personal and social issues they feel strongly about. Art also encourages independence and critical awareness, with children from GCSE level onwards becoming used to researching and directing their own projects.

Developing your child’s interest in Art London is a brilliant city for children to engage in art, both at school and at our amazing range of museums and galleries. Moreover, London’s cultural diversity and contrasting physical landscape make it a wonderfully rich resource in itself. It is always a good time to get creative. Here are some ideas to try out: • Visit museums and galleries regularly – check for family activities, workshops and talks: Dulwich Picture Gallery, Horniman Museum, South London Gallery, Royal Academy, Tate Modern, Tate Britain, National Gallery, British Museum, V&A, Serpentine Gallery, Whitechapel Gallery, Camden Arts Centre. The Royal Academy has lots of family activities, under 16 entry is FREE: www.royalacademy.org.uk. • Create art with your child. It does not matter if you are drawing in sand or getting out the paints – it is all art! • Keep a good stock of art materials. 22 | SE22 - November 2018

• Have discussions about art – you do not need to be an art graduate – everyone’s opinion is valid. • Encourage your child to make responses to artists’ works and to produce artwork on themes which draw on their own interests. • Encourage your child to draw from observation as well as from their imagination. • Get your child a sketchbook to use as a visual diary where they can jot down ideas, feelings and observations. • Go to courses such as Dulwich Picture Gallery, the Royal Drawing School and Parade Mews Pottery. “You’ve got to take all of your little musings seriously. That little doodle in your sketch book might seem inconsequential but down the line it might turn into a major idea.” Grayson Perry www.alleyns.org.uk

Interior Design Advice with Bradley Viljoen

Honour your Ceiling

I

was once told, when walking outside, ‘look up’. Great advice; all that aesthetic beauty to see, instead of uneven paving. Why then, inside our homes, do we give so little attention to the humble ceiling? A well-decorated ceiling can elevate a room, giving it that ‘wow’ factor. It provides an opportunity to add layers, to enhance your chosen scheme, and to be as bold as your creativity allows. The belief that a white ceiling makes a room look taller is often a misconception unless you seek the all-white minimalist look. I recently completed the smallest bathroom redesign imaginable, and, by painting walls and ceiling in the same non-white colour, I successfully blurred their boundaries. The result is a bathroom, not limited by its modest proportions and which feels spacious and harmonious. Ceiling fashion has changed over time, from the elaborate ceilings of the renaissance periods to ‘swirled’ or ‘stippled’ artex, woodchip and, heaven forbid, polystyrene tiles of the 70’s and 80’s! Today’s smooth ceilings bring a myriad of opportunities with a little imagination. Cornicing, normally considered an extension to the wall, directly impacts on a ceiling’s aesthetic impact. I always encourage its retention, softening the hard angle between wall and ceiling and creating many decorative opportunities. For relatively inexpensive impact, there is paper. You can enter the realms of whimsical to geometric here. Paper can enhance and extend the impact of elaborate coving. Awkward spaces and irregular ceilings can have their boundaries blurred by using the same paper on the walls and ceiling; a successful ploy particularly in bedrooms and attic rooms. The second option is paint. From today’s vast selection you can choose both colour and texture – think dead flat oil, satin emulsion or oil gloss, the latter reflecting light into the room beautifully. A trick employed in the Victorian period was diluting the wall colour, which was then applied above the picture rail and then further diluted for the ceiling. This gentle gradation of colour has a subtle but powerful effect, drawing the eye up.

26 | SE22 - November 2018

Photo - Kelly Deck Design

Personally, I favour adding extra ceiling detail, giving a more three- dimensional look and layering interest. An inexpensive option is to add inset beading but be generous with its proportion and place either on the ceiling or on the wall abutting the existing coving. With a more elastic budget, decorative plaster panels, such as those offered by Stevenson of Norwich, can be designed and mounted onto an existing ceiling. Suspended or tray ceilings can also be introduced during refurbishment works. These help to hide lighting cables as well as provide an interesting visual effect. Hidden recesses offer an opportunity to install subdued lighting – think hotel lobbies or cocktail bars. My personal favourite, coffered ceilings, make a strong, geometric statement and can be used in any setting. With so many choices it is high time we honoured our ceilings and move our sights upwards. Why not trial it in one room and see how much your ceiling gives you back in return. www.bradleyviljoendesign.com

Dulwich Hamlet FC - News

November News

W

ith a defeat in the FA Cup away to Eastbourne Town and Dulwich Hamlet’s only home game in October cancelled due to our opponents progressing into the next round, the only game at Imperial Fields last month was a fundraising match against a Crystal Palace XI on Thursday 11 October. This friendly would not be possible without the agreement by our opponents – who sent a squad including several first team names and managed by Roy Hodgson. This was a superb commitment from the South London’s Premier League club and provided much needed match day revenue for the club. This was also a great opportunity to showcase our fantastic club, with just under 1,300 in attendance on the night. For a number of those in attendance, this was the first time watching Dulwich Hamlet and despite a Five – Nil loss we hope those watching The Hamlet for the first time enjoyed their evening and that we will see them again at a future fixture. Increasing our home attendances has been a focus for the Supporters’ Trust this season. The home match on 29th September was designated a ‘Family Day’ and it was so good to see so many of the Junior Rabble at Imperial Fields. They turned out in force to support their heroes on the pitch, collecting balloons, pin badges, team posters and lollipops (pink and blue, of course!) along the way. Also on the day, budding artists took part in a competition to design a page for the 2019 Trust calendar. The Trust’s next Family event is planned for the 1st December, when we hope to host a Christmas Fayre, complete with old fashioned games, stalls and 'seasonal refreshments’ for the grown-ups'. Who knows, Santa himself might make an appearance! Talking of Christmas, the Trust will once again be hosting this year’s Dulwich Hamlet Christmas Party. We are very grateful to the East Dulwich Tavern (EDT), Lordship Lane, who have

The evening will include a raffle, auction and several DJ’s with all proceeds going the clubs 12th Man Scheme and club’s charity partner, so be sure to put Thursday 20 December in your diaries. The Mega-Container has now been relocated to Imperial Fields and was open for business at a home game in early October. It’s had become necessary, in the short term, to bring the container to our temporary home to not only keep up with demand, but to allow us to deliver new merchandise to supporters. In addition to our match day shop, Dulwich Hamlet merchandise can be purchased from our online shop www. dhstshop.co.uk with a percentage of the profits going towards the day-to-day running costs of the football club. Finally, following on from the previously successful Fundraiser Pub Quiz at the EDT, they will be hosting another quiz on Thursday 8 November starting a 20:00. Financial Matters with David Frederick

Pre-Paid Funeral Plans

W

hen Benjamin Franklin said, "in this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes" he could not have foreseen the arrival and explosion in pre-paid funeral plan sales. A pre-paid funeral plan is an arrangement that allows an individual to pay in advance for theirs or another persons' funeral. The plan is a contractual arrangement with a prepaid funeral plan provider, who subject to the plan being fully paid for, will be responsible for arranging the funeral when the time arrives and paying for the elements covered in the plan. In the decade to December 2017, plan sales increased over 200%. The estimated size of the funerals market is some £2 billion per annum and the average cost of a funeral last year was £3,784. The market growth and its size has seen it fall under microscopic examination from consumer groups and the government. In June 2018, the government launched a consultation into the market to examine scope for improved regulation. John Glen, Economic Secretary to the Treasury, said: "There are thousands of pre-paid funeral plans bought each year, and most providers are fair and legitimate. But tougher regulation will ensure robust standards are enforced for all plan providers, and protect individuals and their families if things go wrong”. The government's consultation coincided with the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) study into the market. Daniel Gordon, Senior Director of Markets at the CMA said: "People can understandably be very emotionally vulnerable when planning a funeral. We therefore think it is important that – at what can be a particularly challenging time – the process is made as easy as possible. As part of this study, we want to ensure that people can at least receive clear information on prices and the services making up a funeral, and that people get a fair deal on the cremation fees charged." Pre-paid funeral plan providers are invariably funeral directors, a subsidiary company of a funeral director or a separate entity who make

38 | SE22 - November 2018

arrangements with funeral directors to carry out funerals on their behalf. The main advantages of these plans are that they allow consumers to pay for, and plan their funeral before they die. This can assist some loved ones when having to manage with their loss. Secondly, these plans protect loved ones from the rising costs of funerals. Pre-paid funeral plans should not be confused with life assurance policies which provide a cash amount on death. Life assurance policies differ in three key ways: 1) The money received from a life policy can be spent on anything; 2) The pay-out may or may not be sufficient to cover the funeral costs; and 3) There is no contractual arrangement with a prepaid funeral plan provider. The sector is regulated by the Funeral Planning Authority (FPA). Although 95% of the sector are members, it is not mandatory for plan providers to be a FPA member. The FPA doesn’t have the power to prevent providers from trading; nor is their code of practice is not legally binding. These issues plus some cases of the absence of best practice in the selling of plans has led to the examination. The FPA welcomed the government consultation and would like to become the statutory regulator for the pre-paid funeral planning market in the UK via some form of government legislation. However, we would always encourage consumers to exercise due care and attention when purchasing a pre-paid funeral plan. Plans should only be purchased from a FPA member and consumers should ensure they fully understand the elements of the funeral that their plan covers.

The exhibition includes a display of 100 objects from the Horniman’s anthropology collection which have been selected by Korda and the Collective. SE22 Councillors with Charlie Smith

October News fitted out. It will have more floor space and will also have a small coffee shop within the library. While other Councils are closing libraries, Southwark Labour Council is either opening new ones or refurbishing existing.

New Charter School East Dulwich Grove A number of weeks ago along with other local Councillors, I took part in a topping out ceremony at the new school. Since then much progress has been made and if all goes according to plan new students will move into the school early in 2019. This has been a successful partnership between the Charter Foundation, local parents, local Councillors, our Member of Parliament and Southwark Council. Let's wish the new school every success for the future. Work has already begun on the new medical centre also in East Dulwich Grove. When finished this Centre will provide much needed health care for local residents. Hello, I am Charlie Smith, Labour Councillor for the Goose Green Ward.

Nightmare At Sorting Office The closure of the sorting office in Sylvester Road has caused major problems for SE22 residents now that the only place to collect parcels is from the sorting office in Peckham. It is not unusual to have to wait in line for an hour or more to retrieve post and parcels. This is not good enough. The nine Dulwich Labour Councillors have made a formal complaint to OFCOM about the new arrangement. I am calling on Royal Mail to provide a collection point within the SE22 area. Our local M.P. Helen Hayes is campaigning for Royal Mail to be taken back into public ownership. The move to Peckham has also resulted in delivery of mail in SE22 becoming more erratic. Many local residents are saying they are receiving letters over a week late. This is a total shambles. Your Councillors will do all in their power to rectify the situation.

New Library In Grove Vale A brand new library is due to open before Christmas in Grove Vale. The old library will close and transfer across the road. The new library is currently being 42 | SE22 - November 2018

More Benches For East Dulwich Two years ago I arranged for three benches to be installed in East Dulwich. I have now secured funding for three more benches that will be installed in the not too distant future. This will be a boon for older people and for those with mobility problems. Research has shown older people are reluctant to go out because of uneven pavements and a lack of somewhere to sit. I hope we can tackle both these problems.

Clean Air Southwark Council has pledged to clean up the air we breathe, especially for the young and elderly. We are asking drivers to turn off their idling engines when stationary. Wardens will ask offending drivers to switch off idling engines. Failure to do so could result in a penalty notice being issued. This is especially important near schools and I would ask parents to think seriously about this and would encourage walking to school rather than driving. Charlie.Smith@southwark.gov.uk | 0207-525-7307 Surgeries are held at the East Dulwich Community Centre, Darrell Road on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of the month apart from August between 7 and 8pm.

Dulwich Literary Festival

Dulwich Literary Festival

D

ulwich Literary Festival returns this November with an unmissable line-up of speakers who will kick-off London’s winter literary calendar. Under the theme of rough music, an ancient traditional means of expressing dissent, the festival will celebrate those who have rejected social norms and oppression in the name of progress. Headliners include much-loved comedian Jo Brand, The Apprentice star and Countdown host Nick Hewer, the BBC’s Kamal Ahmed, historian Ben Macintyre and Classic FM presenter John Suchet. They will be welcomed to the halls of Dulwich College and Dulwich Books alongside novelists Melissa Harrison and Sulaiman Addonia, historian Simon Heffer, and writer Louis de Bernières (Captain Corelli’s Mandolin), for a programme of discussions that will look back on the World Wars in commemoration of one hundred years of Armistice, probe pressing issues of contemporary international conflict, and celebrate the unifying power of music. Commenting on the Festival programme, Susie Nicklin, CEO of the MILD group, said: “This year ’s festival features writers who highlight injustice, fight against stereotype, and make noise about the iniquities of war, corruption, bad-faith politics, forced migration and intolerance of difference. My paternal grandfather, missing an eye and therefore not fit for active service, was a quartermaster in France in WW1, while his three athletic brothers were killed within a few miles of each other in the trenches. This festival is dedicated to the memory of those four brave brothers and to all those who have died and suffered in warzones since 1914, as well as those who have lifted their voices in protest and who have encouraged us to live the best lives we can.” Delving into the history, literature and varying perspectives of WW1 and WW2 will be author Giles Milton (D-Day: The Soldier ’s Story), discussing how the events of WW2’s ‘Longest Day’ affected survivors and civilians on all sides, Simon Heffer (The Age of Decadence), who will interrogate the romanticised folk-memory of the decades leading up to the Great War and the complications that lurked beneath, Melissa Harrison (All Among the Barley), whose lyrical novel sheds light on England’s

interwar climate and the looming threat of fascism, and Jean Moorcroft Wilson (Robert Graves), who, on Remembrance Sunday, will sit down with journalist and PTSD expert Matthew Green (Aftershock) for a fascinating discussion of war poetry and the mental health of veterans. Bringing essential discussions around contemporary conflict will be Sulaiman Addonia (Silence is My Mother Tongue), whose novel explores love in a time of struggle and challenges conventional expectations of the refugee experience, Michael Hughes (Country), who will shed light on his moving Irish Troubles story about the brutal glory and bitter tragedy of armed conflict, Lindsey Hilsum, who will honour the life and work of her late friend and war correspondent Marie Colvin, and Ben Macintyre (The Spy and the Traitor), who will be talking about his new Cold War espionage epic, described by John le Carré as ‘the best true spy story I have ever read.’ Exploring the current climate of global affairs will be journalists Jason Cowley (Reaching Utopia) and Isabel Hardman (Why We Get the Wrong Politicians), who will look back on their brimming careers and what they have learnt about

Dulwich Literary Festival Jo Brand, Nick Hewer, Kamal Ahmed, Ben Macintyre and John Suchet will headline main weekend, 7th – 11th November. Two additional events to take place at November’s West Norwood Feast. contemporary political Britain, Kamal Ahmed (The Life and Times of a Very British Man), who will delve into the complexities of immigration and race in the 21st century, and Oliver Bullough (Money Land) and Dharshini David (The Almighty Dollar), who will together examine the relationship between wealth and power and the implications it has for a global future. In accordance with this year’s theme, music and melodies will be celebrated throughout the festival weekend, with much-loved Classic FM presenter John Suchet (Tchaikovsky: The Man Revealed), who will discuss the life, loves and friendships of one of history’s greatest composers, Louis de Bernières, whose lyrical poetry collection commends human connection, the passing of time, music, and love in all its varied forms, and opera and concert experts Jane Glover (Handel in London) and

Elizabeth Nicholson, who will share their profound understanding of the magnificent work of composer George Frideric Handel. Events on Tchaikovsky and Handel will be opened with delightful renditions of the composers’ work, performed by Dulwich College pupils. The festival will bring a roster of family favourites, with inimitable comic Jo Brand (Born Lippy), joined by fellow south Londoner Brenda Gilhooly (AKA Gayle Tuesday) to discuss Brand’s new memoir and, one hundred years after partial women’s suffrage, what it means to be female today, and Nick Hewer (My Alphabet), who will be talking about his entertaining and evocative new memoir. South London cartoonist Tim Bird (The Great North Wood) will explore the history of Dulwich’s woodlands, and children’s author Fabi Santiago (I Really Want That Unicorn) will be running a story–time session with readings and fun craft activities at the Dulwich Books pop-up at West Norwood Feast. Saturday 24 November: Concordia’s Autumn Concert THE GLORY OF BAROQUE. All the magnificent music in Concordia’s autumn concert was composed within the span of only 20 years – in the astonishing flowering of European music in the early 18th century which we now call The Baroque. Our programme especially celebrates the trio of composers whose work defines this golden era: Vivaldi, Handel and Bach. Our centrepiece will be Vivaldi’s Gloria, almost a ‘lost’ masterpiece till the mid-20th century, but now one of the most popular and revered works in the canon of sacred music. The genius of Handel will be represented by two contrasting pieces: Zadok The Priest, which never fails to take the breath away with its sweep and majesty and Ode For the Birthday Of Queen Anne, a secular cantata, part of which was sung at the wedding of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex this summer. Last, but not least, we are delighted to welcome back our special guests The South Circular Orchestra, who will perform the 2nd of Bach’s much-loved Brandenburg Concertos. The performance is at 7.30pm at All Saints’ Church, Lovelace Rd, SE21 8JY. Tickets £14 door, or £13 advance at www.concordiachamberchoir.co.uk. Pets Corner with Leonie St Clair

Living with a bossy cat

M

ost of us are familiar with the horrendous yowls and screams that are the soundtrack to fighting felines. Cats will occasionally scrap for territory or access to resources they value but especially bossy cats will rule other cats in the neighbourhood (aka “Topcat’s Yard”) with an iron paw. Having established itself as the cat ‘in charge’ it takes only a hard stare to warn other cats what follows if they do not defer. These are the cats that can also turn the desire to control with violence onto their human owners. In an earlier article I explored how inappropriate handling in kittenhood can lead to inappropriate play induced aggression. But these cats are different and for want of a better word literally terrorise their owners. This type of puss is very clear about its own boundaries, its likes and dislikes, and it is not scared to impose its wishes onto human owners, with force. Living with a truly aggressive cat is frightening and cats can cause serious injury through bites and scratches - cat scratch disease is a medical emergency. It is often the case that owners just want an easy, cuddly pet but the cat they happen to own is demanding but highly averse to physical contact unless strictly on its own terms and those terms are sometimes known only to the cat in question. If you own a ‘bossy’ cat or a nervous, fearful cat, then you may need to accept this puss is never going to be a cuddle bunny. Common flash points with these feline ‘control freaks’ include grooming, any move to pick them up or cuddle them, being stared at, disturbing them while they nap, food preparation, and any attempts to chastise them. On the other hand, these cats will happily impose themselves on you -plonking themselves on top of the magazine you are reading; nipping to force your attention, or to shoo you away from their food. These cats tend to bite their owners on specific parts of the body, mostly the feet, but even the nose. It used to be thought these cats were dominant but that model did not make sense as cats are not pack animals. Conflict aggression was considered but also dismissed; these cats are not thought to be fearful and tend to have owners desperate to

get into their cat’s ‘good books’. Many cats can be pushy but stop short of aggression, these cats use aggression as their default management tool. If you own a cat like this learn to identify and avoid flash points- forget about meeting force with force, these cats will simply up their game. Look out for the earliest physical signs an attack is on the cards and take immediate action by calmly moving away: • Narrowed eyes, dilated pupils, direct staring • Swishing/twitching tail • Sideways glances at the irritant (your foot or hand, for example) • Hissing, growling or spitting • Ears flattened against the side of the head or rotated backwards • Crouched or tense body posture Use these management tips: • Keep food aggressive cats in another room or outside until their food is ready and on the floor • Cats that nip for attention in the morning should be locked out of the bedroom or other flash point areas • Avoid excessive petting, let the cat come up to you and briefly touch cheeks or forehead • Avoid holding the cat but if he starts to show aggressive signs gently put him down, do not hold him tighter If the problem is more serious contact a feline behaviourist for further advice, specialist training can help rehabilitate cats with this kind of aggression issue. The Last Word – Sarah Gilfillan Sarah Gilfillan is a personal stylist / shopper for men and runs men’s personal style consultancy Sartoria Lab. She helps men who don’t like shopping to get their wardrobes together easily and quickly.

How long have you lived in the area? 14 years

What brought you here? I fell in love with Goose Green when I came to check out the area.

What has changed most during that time? The shops, bars and cafes have all been updated and now we even have a cinema!

The one thing you couldn’t do without? The thing I can’t do without (apart from my phone of course) is tea! There’s just something so comforting about a cup of English breakfast tea.

Do you know your neighbours? I know the people in my building but not the rest of my neighbours. I thought it was a London thing but a friend in Balham and her neighbours have a Google group and regularly have parties! Maybe it’s time I took charge of our street coming together?

The most famous person you’ve met? Ewan McGregor - I was assisting a stylist on a photo shoot for a magazine - he kissed me on the cheek! And yes… I have washed since.

Do you belong to any groups? I belong to the East Dulwich WI and I attend CWS which have both been great for getting to know local people. I also go to 1st London Toastmasters which is a public speaking group in the City.

Describe your perfect weekend I’d kick my weekend off with ‘Dancefit’ on Saturday morning at Push Studios – it’s doesn’t feel like exercise as it’s such fun! Have a yummy brunch at the Blue Mountain cafe, amble around Peckham Rye park with a friend, followed by a trip to see a film at the East Dulwich Picturehouse. Then on Sunday I’d go walking with my dad and his rambling group in Sussex.

The best meal I’ve ever had… The best meal I’ve ever had was at a restaurant on a beach on the island of Ishchia in Italy where I was on holiday with friends. I ate aubergine parmigiana and it tasted of the Italy I’d first encountered and loved as a 17 year old au pair in Salerno. 52 | SE22 - November 2018

Your favourite place to go for a drink? I love the American bar at Brasserie Zedel in Piccadilly

What is your favourite shop? My favourite shop is KJ Laundry in Marylebone Lane - I bought my favourite ever dress there, thanks to the shop assistant suggesting I try it. I wouldn’t have looked twice at it but I love it and always get compliments when I wear it! Reverse personal shopping! For clients, Liberty and Fenwicks have great menswear departments.

The book I’m reading at the moment.. The book I’m reading at the moment is called Born Survivors - it’s about 3 women who managed to conceal their pregnancies whilst at Auschwitz and give birth during the 2nd World War. I went to see one of those children speak at the Jewish museum earlier in the year. It’s an unbelievable tale of survival.
