Welcome to SE22 Where has this year gone too! It amazes me that I can be writing about Bonfire Night and Christmas already! Speaking of Bonfire Night, the wonderful display at Dulwich Sports Club (Saturday 4 November) has already sold out! Definitely one to plan in advance for. As usual I have rounded up all the great events taking place in and around Dulwich. The events pages start on page 6. November is another packed month for events, so we have a fabulous seven pages of online and in person events happening in and around Dulwich. Remember to check out www.arounddulwich.co.uk for a full list of events, as there are too many to put in the magazine this monthl. Also events get added after I have gone to print. You can often find out more details online too. The Dulwich Hamlet FC Update mentions Goals! All thanks to the Women’s First XI and their rip-roaring autumn cup exploits. See page 14. The Last Word goes to Neil Bradshaw, an aspiring author who was born in Dulwich Hospital and brought up in East Dulwich. Read more on page 36. Remember the magazine depends on all the wondeful local advertisers, so please do let them know if you saw them in this magazine! Until next time.

Herne Hill School
Latest review just published Since 2013, Herne Hill School has been selected to feature continuously in the Good Schools Guide. The latest review has just been published and is once again highly favourable, concluding with the following ‘last word’ summary: “It’s a treat to see a pre-prep school doing what they have always done best for early years’ pupils, something of a treasured rarity nowadays as many have been swallowed up by larger organisations. Herne Hill School is a place where childhood is celebrated, with chatty, cheerful, children learning and enjoying life.”

Fabulous Ferns Garden Talk with Janine Winlaw | Instagram @janinewinlaw

ith their elegant green, textural fronds, ferns are fantastic plants for adding a lushness to planting schemes, working particularly well in shady areas. They tend to fall into the following groups. The Dryopteris genus, or woodland ferns, are handsome ferns, tolerant of dryish shade. Dryopteris erythrosora is an attractive fern with semi-evergreen lime green, bronze-tinged leaves, while Dryopteris affinis ‘Cristata’ has upright fresh green leaves for most of the year. For height, look out for Dryopteris wallichiana which has upright bright green fronds of up to 90cm high, while Dryopteris filix femina is another nice large fern. The fronds on these two tend to break up over winter, but cutting them back will reveal fresh green growth for spring. Polystichum ferns have more intricate fronds. Polystichum setiferum is a useful and attractive evergreen fern that grows to around a metre high and is able to tolerate some sun. P. ‘Herrenhausen’ is slightly more delicate and lower growing. P. braunnii has lovely bright green leaves, while Polystichum munitum is a tall upright fern

that will make a statement throughout the year and grow in sun or shade. For more glossy texture, Asplenium scolopendrium, or hart’s tongue ferns, are useful evergreen ferns with large leathery leaves. These are happiest in deep shade. Polypodium vulgare is a tough little fern with shiny mid green leaves. A native of Britain, it tolerates most conditions, moist or dry, sun or shade and looks good colonising under deciduous trees. For something smaller still, try Blechnum spicant. At the other end of the spectrum, Osmunda regalis is a giant (2m) fern with bright green fronds in spring – it likes moisture so would be ideal in a bog garden. Finally, Dicksonia Antarctica, or tree fern, is great to add drama or a bit of exotic to your garden – but tends to need some winter protection. Ferns look wonderful en masse with other shade-tolerant perennials such as white astrantia, eurybia and anemones, creating a lush woodland feel. They also look when mixed up together so that you get a variety of different leaves.

hile results for The Hamlet as a whole remain hit and miss, there have at least been goals! Goals! And more goals! All thanks to the Women’s First XI and their rip-roaring autumn cup exploits. Over an eight-day period at the turn of last month Ryan Dempsey’s side beat Aylesford 6-1 away, before putting another six past Barking in the FA Cup. In between was a 9-1 drubbing of Cheshunt, away in the Isthmian League Cup. That’s 21 spicy goals - scored by ten different players - and quite some harvest! Hats off to the scorers and to the whole squad. Recent winning form, and a thrilling late penalty winner against Saltdean, has also seen our women’s side climb up the league, so hopes are high for November. First up, though, is more cup action as we host Eastbourne United on Sunday 5th in the League Cup. After that it’s Millwall Lionesses away in the league on the 19th. Progress on three cup fronts means the women may have other fixtures coming up, so keep an eye out for those and don’t miss more glorious goal action. Meanwhile the men’s home November schedule sees the visit of Margate on the 11th and Folkestone Invicta on the 18th, giving us tantalising thoughts of seaside returns to come. On the road, there’s a trip to Kingstonian on Wednesday 1st for the third round of the League Cup; then on to Haringey Borough on the 4th and Cray

Wanderers on the 25th. For all fixture news check: pitchero.com/clubs/dulwichhamlet By mid-October the men’s side remain in a lowly league position, but there’s still plenty to celebrate around Champion Hill. In fact it’s party time as fans’ favourite, legendary goalkeeper Preston Edwards is back at the club. On his delight at returning to Dulwich, Preston said “It’s not just about the football. It’s the camaraderie, the community and the shared passion for the game with the supporters.” Cue a chorus of No Preston, no party! October also saw a milestone for our 100 Club, the monthly lottery run by the Supporters’ Trust. Since the 100 Club started we have now passed £60,000 in funds raised to invest in the future of Dulwich Hamlet. Hats off, once more! Talking of hats, for all your pink ‘n’ blue merchandise needs head to the Champion Hill Mega Container on matchday. This season’s replica shirts are still available, as well as plenty of hats, and what’s more we have not one but two new scarves to keep you wrapped up and stylish as the nights draw in. There’s the ‘hipster’ or the ‘Pepper Army’ to choose from. If you can’t get to the ground, you can shop online at dhst.org. uk - where you can also join the Supporters’ Trust or sign up to volunteer. The Trust is the voice of our supporters, and our volunteers are the heart and soul of our club. Up the Hamlet!

Social Relationships
Fitness tips with Leanne Spencer | www.bodyshotperformance.com
Strong Social Relationships: The New Frontier Of Wellbeing In the last few months, I have been thinking a lot about the power of social connectedness for health span. And I wanted to share my own story with you about how I came to recognise its importance of building strong social relationships.
Moments Of Connection A couple of years ago I had everything dialled in. I slept over 8 hours almost every night; I only ate sweet treats 3 times a week. I did a daily 10 min meditation and exercised 5 times a week. My recovery was spot-on, and I had a fortnightly massage. I was crushing it. And yet something felt off. I just wasn’t feeling as happy as I thought I should. One morning I was walking in my local woods with my dog, Kami. We walked past a family, with two toddlers, who approached Kami wanting to stroke her. Having checked with their parents, I asked the kids if they’d like to give Kami a treat. I showed them how to feed her by holding out my flat palm to her mouth, and then placed little chicken treats in their hands. One by one they both held out their little hands and she gently took the treat. The kids looked up at me and joy flooded their faces, and they stroked Kami again before rushing back to tell their parents what they’d done. The look of joy on their faces stayed with me for the rest of the walk. Seeing their expressions and the brief eye contact was a warming feeling. That little spark of connection between me and them, and them and Kami was a beautiful moment. That chance meeting was an epiphany of sorts for me. I realised this is what was missing; moments of connection like this one. As a result, I vowed to myself to notice and appreciate these opportunities more. The rest of the stuff is important, but real human connection is what matters. 16 | SE22 - November 2023
How To Cultivate Strong Social Relationships Here are a few tips to get you started – and feel free to share this with anyone who is interested.
Examine Your Values Values in this context are the code you live by. My value statement is to ‘live truthfully, considerately and to suck the marrow out of life’ (to paraphrase the poet, Thoreau). What about you – what are your values?
Uphold Your Integrity Having integrity is doing what you say you’re going to do and above all, honour your values over other people’s expectations of you. This is critical. How will you demonstrate your integrity?
Determine Your Priorities Prioritisation is determining where your time and energy will go. Does this match up with your values? When we focus on values, integrity and our priorities, we are in a better position to connect with others and develop better social relationships. Better social relationships, both in a professional and personal sense, enhance feelings of belonging, connection, and psychological safety, and they can be life-extending.

Tips for choosing a secondary school Education News From Alleyn's | Www.alleyns.org.uk

f you are 10 or 11, it is likely that you’ve already started to think about where you want to go to school when you leave Year 6. As Registrar at Alleyn’s, my job is to help hundreds of 10and 11-year-olds find their way through our admissions process, from their first time looking round the school through to applying, attending our assessment days, and considering whether to accept an offer. Choosing your secondary school can be difficult, especially because deciding where to spend the next seven years of your life (and such an important seven years!) is a big deal. Here are my top tips for choosing what school to attend.
Ask yourself what type of school is right for you? Not every secondary school is the same, in fact there are a lot of different ones out there. Do you want to go to a co-educational (mixed) school or one with only boys or girls? Would a specialist school be a good choice – there are a number of schools that specialise in sport or music, or would you even consider boarding? Go online, do a bit of research, have a browse around the school website and read their prospectuses.
What makes a school special? Think about the school buildings: what do you love doing and what facilities might be there to help you 18 | SE22 - November 2023
It might seem obvious, but could you get to and from the school quickly and easily? Would you have to rely on your parents to drop you off or is there an easy public transport route? In an ideal world, your perfect school would be just around the corner but don’t panic if it’s not. If it’s got the facilities, clubs and activities to do your after-school dance, drama or piano... you can see your potential school as a one stop shop, which means it can cut down on dashing about from place to place.
Will they look after you? What is the school’s pastoral provision? In other words, how will they look after your wellbeing and help you navigate your teenage years, so that you can still enjoy learning, making friends and dealing with anything else the world throws at you? How you’re feeling at school is really important – as important as what work you are doing or clubs you plan to join.
Customer satisfaction Look at how many pupils stay on at the sixth form, that is an indication of their overall experience – see that as a customer satisfaction survey. Word of mouth is also useful – do you know anyone who goes there? Ask them what they think.
Look around! Make sure you go and look around, speak to pupils, ask questions! Don’t be shy. Observe interactions between teachers and pupils, their relationship can be a good indication of whether the vibe will be right for you.
And finally.. Don’t be put off by the number of applications, the entrance criteria, application process – if anything concerns you get in touch with the school. They will be happy to answer any questions. Louise Mawer, Alleyn’s School.

Tax Free Childcare Despite the UK Tax Free Childcare scheme being over six years old, not all eligible parents are participating with the scheme. Non-participants can be separated into three groups. The first group are the parents who for whatever reason are allegedly unaware of the scheme’s existence. Secondly, there are the subscribers of it’s too good to be true mindset. Finally, the “we earn too much and never qualify for anything” group. However, all three groups can abandon their position because the scheme’s existence is being publicised and secondly it is not too good to be true. The third group may be correct if either partner earns or expects to earn over £100,000 in the year. This may reduce our third group to near zero members. Tax Free Childcare scheme is a UK wide scheme and operates via an online childcare account. This is an account that parents will deposit money for the payment of their child care fees with a registered childcare provider. To avoid exclusion from the online world, there is an option for those who cannot use the online service. The online or off line account is for the sole purpose of paying childcare where the main reason for it is to enable parents to work. Each eligible child is required to have their own Tax Free Childcare account. If families have more than one eligible child, they will need to register an account for each child. The government top-up is then applied to deposits made for each child. The scheme provides working families with a maximum of £2,000 per year per child until they are 11 years old. Parents with a disabled child can receive a maximum of £4,000 per year per child until they are 16 years old. Each child stops being eligible on 1st September after their 11thbirthday. A disabled child stops being eligible on 1st September after their 16thbirthday. For every £8 paid into a Tax Free Childcare account, families automatically receive a top up from the government of £2. Using the tax-free top up, families can save up to £500 every 3 months for each child or £1,000 if their child is disabled Myrtle Lloyd, HMRC’s Director General for 22 | SE22 - November 2023
Customer Services, said: “Families need plenty of childcare options when the weather turns cold and wet and days get shorter. We would urge parents to ensure they’re taking advantage of all opportunities available – whether it’s sending their child to wraparound school club or a holiday club during the half term break. Tax Free Childcare provides financial help that fits your family - to support your childcare needs and save you money.” Qualification for the Tax Free Childcare scheme is based upon a minimum income threshold. Each parent will need to have earnings of at least an average of £166.72 per week. Registration for the Tax-free childcare scheme is via the GOV.UK website. Parents without online access should contact the Tax Free Childcare helpline. Parents who are not eligible are those in receipt of tax credits, Universal Credit or childcare vouchers; and those earning £100,000 or more per year. In addition to continue receiving their government top-up, account holders are required to confirm their details are current every three months. Opening an account takes less than half an hour and money can be deposited at any time. Therefore, those eligible parents who are not yet taking advantage of the Tax Free Childcare scheme no longer have an excuse for not receiving a government payment of £2,000 or £4,000 per child per year.

SE22 Councillors Councillor Charlie Smith - Goose Green Labour Councillor | charlie.smith@southwark.gov.uk
N
ovember brings with it the fireworks season. Gun powder, treason and plot. This year, the weekend of the 3rd to the 5th of November will see the largest numbers of firework parties taking place. Please follow the Firework Code. This useful guide can help reduce accidents if followed. Adults only should light and supervise fireworks. Misuse can cause serious burns and can result in fatalities. Also, consider pets around this time of year. Cats and dogs can become frightened and alarmed by loud bangs and flashes. Keep your pets indoors during this time. Ask your vet to prescribe a sedative if your pet is particularly troubled. Once again, the SE22 area is suffering from a very poor postal service. I have received a number of complaints from local residents. One person told me they did not receive any post for two and a half weeks. This could impact people missing a hospital appointment when a letter arrives after the appointment date. Your local Councillors’s and Member of Parliament are aware of this problem and have contacted the CEO at Royal Mail demanding urgent action. Christmas is just around the corner and I do not want a repeat of previous year’s poor service Your local Councillors recently attended the South Area All Wards forum meeting at the Albrighton Centre. We put questions to Police Inspector Tom Cornish regarding Neighbourhood policing. Members of the public at the meeting asked questions about theft from the person, such as snatching of mobile phones and bicycle thefts. There was also concern about shoplifting along Lordship Lane and North Cross Road which has reached epidemic proportions. Unfortunately, the Police are short of enough officers to tackle and reduce this problem. Fly posting and graffiti are on the rise. I have asked that unwanted fly posting such as on phone boxes is removed and cleaned up as soon as possible. Graffiti is also a problem. The Council does have powers to remove any racist, obscene or threatening graffiti as a matter of urgency. Please report such examples of offensive graffiti to the Council. Although there are still a number of empty shops along Lordship Lane, Grove Vale and North

Cross Road, there are some new businesses opening. The Hisar Turkish restaurant recently closed and a New Mexican style outlet called Chipotle has taken its place. Also, on Lordship Lane, Tandoori Nights ceased trading and the premises is now a nail bar. Good luck to all new businesses especially during these difficult economic times.

Help My Dog Goes Crazy At The Door! Pets Corner with Leonie St Clair | www.londondogstraining.co.uk
D
ogs have been developed over thousands of years to alert us to potential intruders or threats to our territory. In the modern age this most often translates as the dog reacting to any activity at the front door. Many owners have a dog that will bark and excitedly jump all over visitors, others have the sort of dog that goes ballistic when they so much as hear the gate squeak and get so worked up there is a danger they may bite. These are the dogs that may intimidate the postman and shred letters as they emerge through the letterbox. The majority of dogs will always bark to let you know someone is there, the key lies in limiting the duration of the barking and teach the dog what to do next. Most dogs only bark when their owner or caretaker is home. Some dogs are genuinely territorial and will bark, even if home alone, to warn potential intruders they are prepared to take action. Most pet dogs are not truly territorial and dogs that bark when home alone should be screened for separation issues. At one end of the spectrum you have guard breeds (often territorial) and there is a good argument to say such types of dogs are high risk in a densely populated urban environment. These dogs are hardwired to monitor differences in the environment and to take action, should they feel it necessary. True guard breeds can be a tall order and a huge responsibility if you live in the city. Many pet dogs are of the aloof, watch-dog variety. They are not true guard dogs but may not instantly warm to strangers and are more sensitive to environmental changes and quick to sound the alarm. Dogs like this need to be trained early around the front door, to understand what is normal (non-threatening) and what to do when a visitor arrives. At the other end of the spectrum, breeds like the Labrador tend to be super social. They can get worked up at the prospect of visitor arrival because they love meeting everyone. However, having a large Labrador jumping and clawing at you, even if they are simply happy to see you, is not fun and may still result in injury. Excitable nipping and mouthing of the “I love you so much I could eat you”variety is also something I see. The key to training door manners lies in
32 | SE22 - November 2023
understanding the type of dog you have; overfriendly, aloof watchdog or slightly fearful, guard dog or territorial? Of course, there are variations and I see Labradors that dislike new people as well as German Shepherds that are not ‘guardy’ at all. If you own an aloof or fearful dog then I generally suggest you spend some time desensitising them to various front door activity sounds, so they begin to accept them as normal and non-threatening. I also advise screening windows, so the dog cannot see comings and goings in the street. These are the dogs I teach to move away from the door and to go to a spot and remain there while the owner handles visitors or deliveries. Obviously, this takes time and I would recommend the help of a professional trainer or behaviourist, to devise a plan that is tailored for you. Where dogs are sociable but get too excitable on hearing front door activity, I also suggest desensitisation and counter-conditioning. However, very often these dogs can also be taught to recall to you, after they start barking. They learn to calmly accompany you to the door and hold a sit or down, while the door is opened, and visitor invited in. In all cases a strong ‘leave’ cue is desirable. I also recommend the help of a behaviourist if your dog seems fearful or aggressive.

Volunteer Drivers Needed
F
or 30 years, Link Age Southwark has eased loneliness and reduced social isolation for local older people and those living with a diagnosis of dementia. Today, they urgently need more volunteer drivers like Mark. Every Thursday, he collects four older women, from very different backgrounds, driving them to and from singing sessions run by the charity. “I enjoy listening to them chat when I’m driving them. Hearing about their lives and families is fascinating – they may have limited mobility now, but one of them told me that at 18 she’d been a long jump champion! They seem to really appreciate the interaction – they’ll ask about my sons, my dogs – it’s lovely to just be me. I retired last year from a very highpressure career where I was constantly ‘on call’. I wanted to explore other aspects of what I can bring to the world. Link Age Southwark needed drivers. I have a roomy car, and it was an opportunity to give my
brain a rest, whilst hopefully making a difference. Being a volunteer driver makes me feel good: you’re taking time – listening and being there for others.” To find out more about becoming a Link Age Southwark volunteer, contact 020 8299 2623; volunteering@linkagesouthwark.org or visit: www.linkagesouthwark.org

The Last Word with Neil Bradshaw Neil attended St. Hilda’s Prep school (one of the last Dame schools) in Honor Oak Park on the site now occupied by Walters Way. He then went to Haberdashers’ Aske’s in New Cross. He spent most of his working life in the film industry as a freelance camera technician. He is now an aspiring author having just published his first novel THE SWITCH.
What bought you here? I was born here. In Dulwich Hospital in 1960. Both my parents were from New Cross. They moved to East Dulwich when I was 3 months old. The rest as they say is history.
The most famous person you have met? I spent 40 years working in the film industry on numerous films and TV commercials. In that time, I have met hundreds of famous people, Freddie Flintoff, Julie Walters, Noddy Holder and Joanna Lumley I remember as being among the nicest.
Describe your perfect weekend? A perfect weekend would need to include a win for Millwall, a few pints of Guinness, maybe a glass or two of Malbec but most of all spending precious time with my lovely wife.
Coffee or tea? Where? I have always been a tea drinker. Never really liked coffee. I love popping into the French Café Bistro on Forest Hill Road for a cuppa and a croissant. They were hit hard during lockdown (as so many businesses were) but there is always a friendly smile to welcome you in.
The best meal I’ve ever had? Spicy Korean Monkfish in The Fish Shop on Newquay Beach. Absolutely beautiful.
Café, pub or bar? Always a pub for me. Watsons General Telegraph (Forest Hill Road) pulls a nice pint of Guinness.
What is your favourite shop? I often buy flowers from East Dulwich Flowers on Lordship Lane. The staff are helpful and friendly, and they create the most spectacular bouquets which always go down well with my wife and my mum. 36 | SE22 - November 2023
If money was no object? I have just had my first novel THE SWITCH published and have nearly completed the sequel. If money was no object, I would love to become a full time author.
The book I am reading at the moment? ‘Tales of a Film Prop Man’ by Pete Benson. A book filled with hilarious stories and anecdotes from a lifetime spent in the film industry. Guaranteed to raise a smile.
My perfect holiday? I have had a love affair with the West Country since I was a child. I think Devon and Cornwall are amongst the most beautiful places in the world. My wife and I recently visited the Lewinnick Lodge on the Pentire Peninsular. Absolutely stunning.
My secret ambition? At the age of 63 I have given up hope of playing football, cricket or rugby for England. My secret ambition is to be a successful author. I am working on it……… www.neilbradshawauthor.co.uk
