Welcome to SE22 This Month

Welcome Finally I can officially tell you about a TV programme which was filmed last Summer. Along with five friends from the East Dulwich WI, I took part in Ashley Banjo’s Secret Street Crew! It was an amazing experience and now we finally get to see how it has all been edited for TV. Find out more on pages 10 & 11. Lawrence Roullier White has been double busy this month. Firstly he has collated a fantistic coffee crib sheet in the Hectic Host on page 12. Our shopping feature this month is all about greeting cards. Find out Lawrence’s favourites on page 28. As usual there are so many events going on in East Dulwich and the surrounding areas, we have trouble fitting them all in. So make sure you read all the events pages and the calendar, so you can plan your October. Cheers

ast summer, six members of the East Dulwich WI took part in the SKY 1 TV show, Ashley Banjo’s Secret Street Crew - shocking their loved ones and proving there is whole lot more to the Women’s Institute than cake-baking competitions at the summer fete. If you are not familiar with the show, each episode follows a group of non-dancers as they secretly attempt to learn a street dance routine choreographed by 2009 Britain’s Got Talent winner Ashley Banjo and his street dance troupe Diversity. After an invitation to audition from the production company Shine and following many anguished emails, phone calls and glasses of wine, the EDWI had six members to put forward – Anna Gryce, Angela Burgess, Fiona Nott, Pam Martin, Sarah
Pylas and Tina Hampson. The casting took place at The Plough on Lordship Lane, on a cold February evening in 2013. The group was filmed doing traditional WI activities such as patch working and sketching, as well as dancing around the tables to music. The footage was taken away for the producers to review and a few days later, the EDWI were told that they had been selected to be a part of the show! Yikes! As exciting as this was, the participants were under strict instructions not to reveal any details to their friends and family. So, together they came up with the cover story that they were filming a documentary about the history of the WI instead. Everyone fell for it, but little did they know that

Wedding bells Get a Pre-nup. those or Alarm bells? Silence concerns. Sometimes things don’t always turn out the way we plan. Arranging a pre-nuptial agreement is like taking out a form of insurance. You may never need it, but it’s reassuring to know it’s there. Divorce and separation can be a very expensive and distressing time. A little agreement now, could make things a lot easier later.

just 3-weeks later, their loved ones would actually be surprising them with a choreographed routine at a WI event. Filming took place from July – August last year, during one of the hottest spells in years. The team settled in gently to the first day of filming, with tea and cakes in a beautiful garden on Court Lane. This is where they were introduced to Ashley, who wanted to first find out a bit more about them and why they were doing it.
“It was exhausting, at times, terrifying and a really challenge coordinating mind and body. However, I had a lot of fun and am incredibly proud of what we achieved,” said Tina. Fiona agrees. “I never believed I would be able to pull it off and am so proud that I conquered my fear to take part. I knew it was going to be a challenge – and it certainly was - but it was the best experience of my life and something I will never forget.” The episode of Ashley Banjo’s Secret Street Crew featuring The East Dulwich WI airs on Sky 1 HD, Sunday 5th October, at 6pm.
Everyone agreed it was a great opportunity to learn something completely out of their comfort zone. “The WI is about inspiring women and learning new skills” said Anna Gryce, President of the East Dulwich WI. “We wanted to remain true to these traditional values, but also show that the twee jam making image of WI members

Hectic Host
The A-R of Coffee
I
nspired by the new generation of independent coffee bars that are springing up in South London the Hectic Host predicts a return of the old style coffee morning – however this time around things will be less black and white than the old-school ‘black or white’? If you cannot tell your Affogato from your Ristretto and are confused by the java jargon avoid embarrassment with this handy crib sheet. Affogato. From the Italian word for “drowned”; ice cream covered with Espresso often with a drop of coffee liqueur. Americano. Possibly invented by GI’s stationed in Italy during WWII; a double Espresso with double the amount of hot water added – see Long Black. Antoccino. A single shot of espresso with equal amount of steamed milk. Not known in Italy. Cafe au Lait. Brewed coffee with steamed rather than cold milk. Café Con Hielo. Spanish for “coffee with ice”; an iced Espresso. Café con Leche. Spanish for "coffee with milk"; similar to a Latte, however, the Espresso is mixed with scalded milk in equal proportions. Café Cortado. Spanish for “cut”; a shot of Espresso “cut” with warm milk. Café Cubano. An Espresso sweetened with raw cane sugar. Cafe Noisette. In between a Macchiato and a Latte; a double shot of Espresso with half the amount of hot milk. Café Viennois. From Vienna; equal parts Espresso, hot milk, and whipped cream. Caffè Corretto. An Italian cocktail of Espresso with Grappa or Sambuca. Cappuccino. A classic Cappuccino is equal parts double Espresso, steamed milk and foamed milk. A "wet" Cappuccino has more steamed milk whereas a "dry" Cappuccino has more foamed milk. Cold Brew. The process of steeping coffee grounds in cold water for an extended period. Doppio. Italian for “double”; rather than a single 30 ml shot of Espresso, a Doppio is a 60 ml shot. Espressino. One shot Espresso with equal parts steamed milk and sprinkle with cocoa powder, also known as Marocchino.
12 | SE22 - October 2014
Espresso Con Panna. Italian for “Espresso with cream”; an Espresso with whipped cream. Flat white. Developed in Australia in the 1980s; made by pouring steamed milk from the bottom of a pitcher “microfoam” over Ristretto. Irish coffee. Coffee, whiskey, and sugar topped with thick cream Latte. Italian for “milk”; a double shot of Espresso with 300 ml steamed milk topped off with foamed milk. Long Black. Similar to an Americano but prepared oppositely by adding double Espresso to an equal amount of hot water leaving the crema (the thin layer of foam) intact, creating a more full bodied flavour. Macchiato. A double or single Espresso with a dash of foamed milk. Marocchino. See Espressino. Mocha. One shot Espresso with 120 ml steamed milk with chocolate syrup. Red Eye. Like an Americano but a double Espresso mixed with brewed coffee rather than water. Sometimes known as a Shot in the Dark or an Eye Opener. Ristretto. Water is forced through ground coffee similar to Espresso but more quickly releasing less caffeine compared to regular Espresso but the same amount of coffee oils and flavour. Can also mean an Espresso with less water. The Hectic Host Lawrence Roullier White www.roullierwhite.com

Food & Drink This Month Come on all you ‘hunter gatherers’ this time of year is just perfect for searching out free food in local parks and hedgerows! Whilst blackberries are past their best there is still time to seek out elderberries, wild mushrooms, chestnuts, wild rocket, watercress, quince and figs. There is something strangely pleasing about knowing that this former Surrey farmland continues to provide food 100 years on!!
Roasted Figs wrapped in Parma Ham with Blue Cheese Preparation 20 minutes (serves up to 4 as a starter) When left to ripen in the sunshine figs are a truly luscious fruit. Some prefer to peel the fig before eating, but in fact the whole fruit is edible. They are best kept at room temperature, as chilling suppresses the flavour. If you have too many to eat at once, fig jam is delicious or they can be poached in syrup and served with a little crème fraîche or mascarpone. This is a wonderful, easy & delicious starter.
In Season this month Fruits, Nuts & Fungi Apples, blackberries, chestnuts, elderberries, figs, grapes, pears, quince, tomatoes, walnuts. Lots of lovely mushrooms; chanterelles, chestnuts, horse mushrooms, oyster mushrooms, parasol mushrooms, puffballs, giant shaggy ink caps and summer truffles. Vegetables & Herbs Beetroot, borlotti beans, broccoli, cabbages, carrots, cauliflower, celeriac, celery, chard, courgettes, fennel, kale, kohlrabi, leeks, onions, peppers, potatoes, pumpkins & squash, rocket, salsify, scorzonera, spinach, turnips. Meat & Game Duck, wild goose, grouse, guinea fowl, hare, mallard, partridge, pheasant, rabbit, venison, wood pigeon. Fish & Shellfish Cod, crab, eels, lobster, mackerel, mussels, oysters, prawns, scallops, sea bass, sprats, squid, brown and rainbow trout. 14 | SE22 - October 2014
Ingredients
• 4 ripe, fresh figs • 8 slices Parma ham • 750g/3oz Italian blue cheese (we suggest Gorgonzola, Roquefort or Dolcelatte) • Extra-virgin olive oil • Balsamic glaze • A small bag of rocket (or other salad) leaves • Salt and freshly ground black pepper
Method
Preheat the oven to 180C/350F/Gas 4. Place the figs on a baking tray. Using a sharp knife, carefully make an incision halfway down the fig in the top in the shape of a cross, so the top of the fig opens up when squeezed lightly. Cut the cheese into small lumps and then divide it between the figs, pushing pieces down into the tops. Carefully wrap two slices of Parma ham around the middle of each fig, leaving the top uncovered. Sit the figs on a baking tray and cook in the oven for 8-10 minutes, or until the cheese has started to melt and the ham begins to crisp. Divide the salad / rocket leaves onto 4 serving plates and place 1 fig on top of each pile of salad. Drizzle over the balsamic glaze and the olive oil and season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Serve immediately, while the cheese is still warm. You can drizzle some honey on top too if the fancy takes you!

Fitness Tips
BeneFITS of……Dance by Amanda Botterill, Push Studios
I
t’s THAT time again….the time of the year that the sequins are out, the self-tan is on, the celebs are nervous…yes, it’s Strictly time once more!! Strictly Come Dancing has been going for over ten years now and has been partly responsible for a dance revival. Over those years, many of the celebrities have lost weight, toned up and become more flexible due to their dance regime. In 2011 Pamela Stephenson lost 2 stone, and 2013 saw Susanna Reid lose 7lbs, Lisa Riley 2 stone and Kimberly Walsh lost 27cm from her hips. It’s THAT time again….the time of the year that the sequins are out, the self-tan is on, the celebs are nervous…yes, it’s Strictly time once more!! Dance of ANY kind will be of benefit and you don’t have to have any experience to enjoy the wonderful results that dance can bring. The number of people taking part in dance classes across the globe is increasing, allowing people to be more active, socialise within local communities and develop creative skills. There are numerous benefits to taking part in dance classes from increasing your daily exercise to making new friends with shared interests. In the European Union the weekly exercise targets for children are currently set at a minimum of 1 hour per day for children and at least 30mins five times a week for adults. Although these targets may seem daunting at first they can be enjoyably and easily met – by dancing! Aside from dancing being a huge amount of fun, the benefits are to reduce stress levels, weight loss, increased muscle tone and creating stronger bones to support the body.
Not ‘sporty’??? No matter!! Many dancers and those who enjoy dance don’t consider themselves ‘sporty’ at all! However, the fitness of a dancer can be likened to that of an Olympic athlete – in fact a study in 2008 by the University of Hertfordshire concluded that the tested groups of dancers from the English National Ballet and the Royal Ballet performed 16 | SE22 - October 2014
25% better in fitness tests that the international squad of swimmers tested. The beneFITS of a group class: release endorphins & build your confidence.
Pairing physical activity and social connection can stimulate extra endorphin production – when you’re doing exercise in a group the energy level is higher and more endorphins are released. Whether it’s Zumba, Cha Cha, Rumba, Hip Hop, Tango, Street Dance, Ballet, Jazz, Contemporary or a Tap Class, the enjoyment is limitless and the benefits bountiful!! In addition, getting involved in a group class will increase confidence class by class to embark on other exercise activities.
TEN reasons to get dancing • Keep your body and brain active • Improve strength and flexibility • Embarking on something new – learn a new skill • Improve posture & balance • Reduce stress levels – dance is for YOU • Building confidence & communication skills • Offering a creative outlet • Improve coordination • Loose inhibitions • Above all – it’s great fun!!!!! To locate your nearest dance class go to Google, type in “East Dulwich Dance Classes” and keeeeeep dancing!!!

Dulwich Hamlet FC - News
Attendance record smashed at Dulwich Hamlet Dulwich Hamlet smashed the attendance record for the current ground on Saturday 6 September. Over 2800 people streamed through the turnstiles to support the pink & blues against Hampton & Richmond, buoyed by the opportunity to ‘pay what you like’ to mark ‘Non-League Day’. The festivities started early, as regulars and newbies alike marched from Peckham Rye Park to the ground accompanied by local band ‘the Relatives’. The Hamlet were also chosen as one of four non-league clubs nationally to front the antidiscrimination group Kick it Out’s ‘season of action’. As ever, our fans (the Rabble) created a carnival atmosphere on the terraces and their faith was rewarded by two excellent strikes from summer signing Ashley Carew. Sadly, 10-man Dulwich couldn’t hold out for a win, and conceded a last minute equaliser. All proceeds from the game (over £6000) were donated to the Mayor of Southwark’s homeless charities. A little under £1000 was also raised for MND research, as management and players participated in the ice bucket challenge after the game. Champion Hill was gripped by FA Cup fever the following Saturday, when the Hamlet entertained Worthing FC. The match was also significant as Dulwich became the first non-league club to back the national anti-homophobia Rainbow Laces campaign. In addition to the players, many of the Rabble picked up a pair in exchange for a donation split equally between the 12th Man scheme and the Gay Football Supporters’ Network. Sadly, the laces didn’t inspire the players to victory, and FA Cup glory will have to wait another year, as the Hamlet lost 3-0. Off the pitch, discussions on the redevelopment of Champion Hill and Greendale Fields continue. The Dulwich Hamlet Supporters’ Trust have been active and have put in submissions to Southwark Council, Hadley Property Group (owners of the ground) and the London Assembly. You can read more on this and other news at www.dhst.org.uk. October is set to be another exciting month, so why not join us and support your local team. Upcoming home fixtures are shown below. Financial Matters
The age of the new pensioner
T
oday we can provide Paul McCartney with an answer to the question he posed as a 16 year old when he wrote the words "will you still need me, will you still feed me, when I'm sixty-four?" The nature of retirement has changed. It is no longer a matter of leaving the workplace with a golden carriage clock and entering a quiet life of leisure. The profile of today's state pension age adults is as follows: Just over 38% of UK adults who are at state pension age are fully retired; Some 49% of those working aged 60+ remain in the workplace to boost their retirement income;
"...UK workers are taking a more gradual approach to retirement..."
Over a quarter, 28%, of those who are working in their sixties, seventies and eighties run their own business; and One in five, 21%, of these businesses began when the entrepreneur was in their sixties. Research by London Victoria (LV=) found, UK workers are taking a more gradual approach to retirement and are working beyond the state pension age, slowly cutting back their hours and reducing the number of working days. Some 38% of UK adults at state pension age no longer work with working longer being today's norm. Various factors contribute to the rise in ‘parttime pensioners’. For some there is a financial element that drives their decision to work past state retirement age, with almost half remaining in the workplace to boost their retirement income. However, the key reasons people choose not to retire are because they enjoy working (52%) and feel that they are far too young to stop (46%). When asked how old they feel, three quarters (75%) of people aged 60+ felt much younger than they are, and on average feeling 50+. It would seem that over 60s refuse to be constrained by their age. LV= research identified a group known as the ‘grand-trepreneurs’, adults of state pension age who are choosing to use their newfound 40 | SE22 - October 2014
freedom to set up or invest in businesses. Over a quarter (28%) of those who are working into later life run their own business, with one in five (21%) of these starting-up when the entrepreneur was in their sixties. At the same time, since semi-retiring close to a third (32%) have switched careers to try something new. The need to ‘have something to do' (45%) and a desire ‘to feel useful’ (25%) are the key drivers behind the UK’s ‘grand-trepreneruial’ spirit.
Today's over 60s are the real ‘boomerang generation’. The findings show that there is a trend to ‘unretire’, with many retirees returning to work. Some 15% of employees in their 60s have returned to work after retiring; 49% have come out of retirement to boost their retirement; and a further 39% have returned to work to overcome boredom. Despite many pensioners working longer, returning to work, or delaying taking their private pension to boost their retirement income, only 5% have deferred their state pension. This is despite the fact that deferring their state pension would increase the value of their state pension by 10.4% a year. Richard Rowney, Managing Director of Life & Pensions at LV= said: “For many people, working for longer is a positive choice. Many people in their sixties and seventies enjoy their jobs and are keen to remain active in later life. However we cannot ignore that for others, their financial situation means they have to continue working - or even go back to work after retiring – because they simply cannot afford to stop. Perhaps the removal of the 65 years old default retirement age was a direct response to Paul's original question. SE22 Councillors
East Dulwich Crime
O
ur local Police officers have told us crime is down. During the last four months 57 crimes were reported versus 83a year ago. But East Dulwich still has a problem with burglary. The Police have more officers patrolling locally including some in plain cloths. I’d recommend asking our local Police for a home crime prevention visit. If you email them eastdulwich. snt@met.police.uk or call them on 07920 233912 you can have some expert advice, and Cllr Rosie Shimell and I have ensured they have lots of really useful free crime prevention kit to help you protect your home. But we can all do simple thing. Keep front garden plants and hedges lower than chest height, keep an eye on neighbouring properties, report suspicious activities to the Police via the non emergency 101 number.
Another cause for local Police concern is fraud against older residents. Sometimes this is done over the phone to get bank details and then clean bank accounts out. A useful aid to help people spot scams can be found via this link http://www. met.police.uk/docs/little_book_scam.pdf or let me know you’d like a copy and I’ll drop one round when passing.
Police Base June last year the Met Police closed East Dulwich Police station. A real blow to the area with our local Police now spending a third of their shifts traveling to and from the area – they’re based in Camberwell now. So we have been exploring several different solutions to providing a local Police base in the area. They have access to the borough Youth offending Team Offices on East Dulwich Road which have a small Police office. But it isn’t accessible to the general public and easily accessible 24/7. We have found sufficient budget to open an annex building to provide this Police Base beside the Dulwich Library. We’re now working to get cross party support to see that it happens. Sadly it wouldn’t be a Police station but it would make our Police more accessible and that we maximise the time they’re policing rather than travelling. 44 | SE22 - October 2014
Do you agree with this potential new local Police base ?
eSurgeries For some time we’ve seen a big decline in the number of people visiting councillor face to face surgeries. Cllr Charlie Smith holds his the second Thursday of each month 7-8pm at the East Dulwich Community Centre. Cllr Rosie Shimell and I hold our on the fourther Thursday of each month also at the East Dulwoich Community Centre 7-8pm. But very few want the bother of set times and leaving home for relate a problem to a councillor. So Rosie and I offer home visit. This is to ensure we’re as accessbile as possible. If you need a local ocuncillor to help you please email or call us. We’re happy to drop round for a home visit. But we’re also now offering a further service, eSurgeries. If you’d like a video Skype call just let contact me so we can arrange a time. James Barber.

Hedges
A
utumn is the ideal time for planting hedges. Hedges define property boundaries, provide privacy, compliment and soften houses. They can constitute a winbreak and have a strong architectural presence. Informal and semi-formal hedges are also an excellent source of food and shelter for wildlife. The choice of hedging plants is very wide and deciding what hedge can be tricky. Decide first what type of hedge you’d like: evergreen, deciduous, formal or informal, flowering? How tall would you need it to be maintained at? Here is a selection of good hedging plants that spring to mind:
Ilex auifolium “Argentea marginata” (Holly)
A splendid evergreen hedge with lustruous dark green glossy leaves, silver margins and bright red berries. It’s very attractive to wildlife and once established and well kept, it can look very crisp. And of course it looks magical at Christmas.
Escallonia
I’m not a big fan of the one with pink flowers but if you can find the white flowered variety and have a sunny aspect it’s a charming hedge which will produce masses of flowers from June to October.
Eleaagnus ebbingei
Attractive silver foliage. Needs loads of sun but doesn’t mind the wind.
Pyracantha “Orange Glow”
It will look shaggy for a few years but will pay off. Once established it can look very crisp if you keep it trimmed. It looks stunning in Autumn with its orange berries and bears fragrant white/cream flowers in May. The network of armoured stems make it a great nesting site for small birds - with "breakfast in bed" in winter when they feast on the ripe berries.
Taxus baccata (Yew)
English Yew Hedge is the classic British conifer hedging plant, called the King of Hedges. Yew is a dense, dark evergreen with bright green spring growth and red fruits which are much sought after by birds but harmful to humans and pets.
Osmanthus burkwoodii
It’s a lovely dense evergreen hedge with the bonus of fragrant jasmine-like flowers in April and May. Like many white flowering plants, the fragrance carries a good distance, particularly in the evening so this is an ideal hedge to plant near the house/patio. If you trim 46 | SE22 - October 2014
the hedge after flowering, it will increase the flowering for the following year.
Viburnum tinus “Eva Price”
Nothing showy about it but it makes a sound informal evergreen hedge which flowers in Winter.
Hornbeam/ Beech
Both native hedges. Both suitable for formal hedges. Both suit period or modern properties. They are deciduous but still provide screening in winter as they retain brown leaves until spring (Beech hold its leaves longer than Hornbeams.) A favourite of mine.
Purple or copper beech
Oh so lovely. Quite pricey though. And not always easy to source.
Lavendula angustifolia “Hidcote”
A very welcoming and of course beautifully scented evergreen low hedge. This is too low to provide privacy but is a good choice to define boundaries without creating a “wall”.
Crataegus monogyna (Hawthorn)
Native informal hedge with fragrant white flowers and red berries. Very attractive to wildlife and resistant to pollution.
Photinia x fraseri “Red Robin”
It looks stunning in Spring covered with bright red young foliage. One last tip before I run out of space: In Spring cut back top growth to encourage a thicker base. Barbara Samitier is a garden designer who lives in Peckham Rye. www.barbarasamitiergardens.co.uk

The Last Word - Scummy Mummies Ellie Gibson and Helen Thorn are local comedians who met at a stand-up gig in Lewisham and bonded after discovering their children were born 11 days apart, with the help of the same midwife. Together they are the Scummy Mummies, performing their monthly comedy show at The Hob in Forest Hill. They also co-host the UK's number one parenting podcast.
How long have you lived in the area? Together we've lived here a total of 40 years. Helen moved to SE23 in 2010 and Ellie has lived around here her whole life.
What do you most value about the area? As parents, it's great to live in a place where there is so much to do with kids, from libraries and swimming to parks and art classes. But most of all, we enjoy being part of the local community because people are so friendly here, and they have a good sense of humour!
The one thing you couldn’t do without? Having the Horniman Museum on our doorstep is brilliant - it has saved our lives on many a rainy Thursday afternoon. Our kids adore the aquarium, the walrus and the music room, and we love the cafe and the free wi-fi...
The most famous person you’ve met? We spotted Jo Brand in Dulwich Village. This was a big thrill for us because we are huge fans of her comedy and she's one of our all-time heroes.
Your favourite place for a night out? The Hob in Forest Hill for The Scummy Mummies Show, of course! We perform one Wednesday night every month. Come on down and grab a wine, meet other local parents and enjoy the show!
What is your favourite place to eat? We like Italian food so Si Mangia on Forest Hill Road is always great for a treat. The pizzas at Sodo in Honor Oak Park are fanastic too. And we are Scummy Mummies, so we have been known to take the kids to the Wetherspoons in Forest Hill for a cheap and cheerful tea!
Coffee or tea? Where? We love sharing a pot of tea at Montage on Dartmouth Road. The best bit is the playroom downstairs, which keeps our children entertained while we pretend to write jokes for our show (but really just talk about The X-Factor.) Actually, that's not even true. The best bit is the cake. 48 | SE22 - October 2014
The best kept secret... Mayow Park never seems to be too busy but we love it - there are two playgrounds to choose from and the new cafe is fabulous. Plus our kids are big fans of the art class, Messy Makers, which runs every Wednesday at 10.30am in the community garden.
What is your favourite shop? We love The Fitting Studio in Forest Hill - it's the best bra shop in London! We also like visiting Sugar Mountain for a treat after swimming. And we like popping into Bunka because they have great gift ideas and don't mind the kids playing with the toys out the back.
If money was no object... We would buy the Catford Broadway theatre. During the day, we'd turn it into a giant soft play centre with accompanying wine bar. At night, we'd perform The Scummy Mummies Show! The Scummy Mummies show is performed Wednesdays at 8.30pm on the following dates: 24 September, 29 October, 26 November and 17 December. Each show features brand new sketches, songs and silliness plus special guest comedians. Tickets are £5 from We Got Tickets: www.wegottickets.com/location/2903 Visit their website for more details and to download their podcast for free: scummymummies.com.
