Welcome

This month we are delighted to be working with Dulwich Books (with both our Around Dulwich & SE mags hats on), on the Dulwich Literary Festival. So we have all the details of the events which take place at the Old Library, Dulwich College, but better than that, we have a fabulous introduction by our very own Helen Lederer. Helen is taking part in the event and will be discussing her new book out, Losing It! See pages 41 to 42 for full details. Lawrence Roullier White has been checking out the local talented designer-makers and skilled craftspeople in the area, see page 36 for more. Check out our full events listing starting on page 8, we have more pages than usual full of local events. Remember there are more events, stories and news at www.arounddulwich.co.uk. All your favourites are here: Around Dulwich, page 10; Hectic Host, page 12; Food & Drink, page 14; Fitness Tip, page 16; Children’s activities, pages 22 & 23; Dulwich Picture Gallery, page 38; Financial Matters, page 48; the Horniman, page 46; Pets corner, page 50; SE22 Councillors, p52 and Garden Talk, page 54. Dulwich Literary Festival 2015

Introduction

Helen Lederer - Losing It!

I

’ve discovered there are consequences to publishing a book. No more is there a mad dash in and dash out of a book shop or even a lazy browse. Now I skulk about wondering if my book is stocked, and if it is, I debate whether I should yank it out of the shelf to make it look more prominent on a table - or wonder if I might bribe the book shop to allow me stand at the door and direct people to my signed copies before suggesting they might like to write me five star reviews on amazon. Actually I do none of these (no really, I don’t) but I have learned about the wonders of the world of the Literary Festival. All year I have been discovering more pleasures as I travel to different towns and meet amazing people who make these events happen. The best bit (for me) is actually meeting and talking to the readers who have actually read my book and share a glass of wine or two in these friendly and convivial settings. I call these Literary Festivals ‘stand-up comedy but with less jokes and more love’. So imagine my extra delight to be invited to take part in such a festival in my very own postcode. The Dulwich Literary Festival has not only been brave enough to invite me to talk about ‘Losing It’, which is my first comedy novel about a woman who is in debt, divorced and desperate (moi?). But it will also allow me to experience some stunning authors who are also going to be in Dulwich this year. I was lucky to attend Kate Mosse’s book launch at the Horniman Museum and

became beguiled by furry people dressed as animals and experienced a real ‘happening’ around Kates new book ‘The Taxidermist’. What other postcode could host such a magical event? It’s exciting to note that the festival has attracted an amazing line-up including not only Kate Mosse, Vince Cable, Prue Leith and Huw Edwards, but also Melvyn Bragg! People will be cancelling their holidays no doubt to get a piece of this literary action where debate, chat and general awe is guaranteed. I’ve lived in Dulwich for 14 years and seen the bistro pubs come (and go) along the lane and often wonder what it would be like to live anywhere else. But this will be my first Dulwich Literary Festival along with my first book and er... my first nomination for the PG Wodehouse comedy literary prize (and no I didn’t get it) but hey - it’s not the winning it’s the taking people apart that counts…. Can’t wait to see you over a glass and a book! helenlederer.co.uk/tour comedywomeninprint.co.uk/

During the evening children will be able to pay a visit to the house of Mrs Frankweiler and listen to her tales, explore the mysteries of the Gallery with a special trail and make their own autographed book bag to take home, all whilst experiencing the enchanting atmosphere of the Gallery after hours. It’s then lights out for a sleep like no other alongside baroque masters including Rembrandt and Canaletto. The following morning includes a healthy breakfast and screening of a film adaptation of the book before the Gallery opens to the public. Age: 8 – 13yrs old. Oh, The Excitement! By Sarah Pylas

Around Dulwich has only been shortlisted for Best Website at the Association of Independent Magazine Publishers’ Awards! Not only that but our mothership, SE Magazines, is up for Best Social Media Presence. Angela is off to the glitzy award ceremony in the West Midlands and will hopefully return to East Dulwich with a gong or two for our (tragically bare!) trophy cabinet. Win or lose, we think a celebration of some sort is definitely called for so expect to see us hitting the fizz hotspots on our high street soon. The newly spruced up Palmerston is now open for breakfast from Friday-Sunday and will set the perfect scene for waffles and buck’s fizz. Meanwhile, Toasted are running even more superb events over autumn following the huge success of their recent wine tastings. Now the new school term is well underway, routine has found its way back into our lives. However, no amount of planning seems to prevent the morning chaos before the post-school run calm. Shoes are still being hunted for at 8.45am, book bags are eternally disappearing and coats that fitted just 2-days ago are now straining at the seams. The end of summer also spells the end of one of England's great rituals _ the cricket season. Fortunately I was on hand to see my husband's cricket team, the mighty Dulwich 7th XI, beat Wiltshire's Fonthill Cricket Club for the first time in seven attempts. Fonthill will no doubt be plotting revenge when Dulwich turn up next May on their annual cricket (and cider) tour of the West Country. I may no longer be a cricket widow, but it seems when one sports season ends, another begins! Our TV is permanently switched to the footie at the moment so when local friends invited me for dinner at Pedler, a vibrant neighbourhood eatery new to Peckham, I jumped at the chance to escape for a

few hours over a glass of Mother’s Ruin. The menu changes daily and uses fresh seasonal ingredients, all served with an array of Little Bird Gin cocktails. But there was obviously so much more to September than gin and wine. There was tea, Prosecco and cakes galore at Fiona Nott’s annual Open House for Macmillan Cancer Support. Hosted over 2-days, the event raised much needed funds for a great cause. Well-done Fi! This month we are looking forward to the Herne Hill Music Festival on 9th October, as well as the highly anticipated first Dulwich Literary Festival on the weekend of 16-18. We are particularly excited about seeing legendary comedian and author, Helen Lederer, who will open her event on the 18th with a short stand up performance and then talk about her fab and funny book ‘Losing it’. Keep your eyes peeled for an exclusive interview with Helen on the site soon. Our events page has full listings of all the local news, events and ticket information. Just visit our website for more details www.arounddulwich.co.uk or follow us on Twitter @arounddulwich.

Break Fast

T

he most difficult thing I always find when you have guests for the weekend is the breakfast, especially on the day of departure. For whatever reason breakfast is one of those meals that everyone seems to view differently; whilst for some it might be half a slice of toast on the hoof to others it is the full monty virtually including the hooves. Divining what everyone is expecting is a problem and if you were hoping to get away with a juice and coffee the last thing you want to do is to introduce the notion of a meal with more components and opportunities for danger and disaster than Heston Blumenthal catering Bear Grylls’ wedding. I never eat breakfast, although I know one should, so my biggest problem is remembering that other people do and getting something in. Then the next problem is whether it will be something your guests will want. There is the added disadvantage of the social etiquette, which is peculiar to breakfast, whereby guests feel like they can contribute to the menu planning. I remember being horrified once as I reached for the eggs and asked how everyone wanted theirs, meaning firm or runny scrambled, to hear a request come back for Benedict. Not what I had in mind. The key, I have discovered, is to have breakfast prepared in advance, appear like you have gone to a lot of effort to dissuade anyone from thinking they can go à la carte and do not get into any negotiations. This requires resolve and a steady nerve. If you find yourself about to suggest popping out to the butcher’s for some smoky bacon– just remember it will not, I repeat will not, end there. Pretty soon you will have a list as long as your arm and be wondering how you jug kippers (just stand tailed and headed kippers in a jug of boiling water for about 4 or five minutes, strain and serve with butter or lemon). This simple muesli cookie recipe works a treat every time, it is really delicious and guests will come downstairs to the aroma of baking, a smell

12 | SE22 - October 2015

daring anyone to ask for devilled kidneys. I blame Downton Abbey. Place 200 gms of your favourite muesli in a bowl, break in 1 large egg and stir in two tablespoons of runny honey. Place moulded balls of the mixture on a lightly oiled baking sheet and flatten slightly. Bake in an oven pre-heated to 200-degrees until golden brown, probably around 15 minutes but check after 5 and 10 minutes, as this timing is approximate and will depend on the size and thickness of the cookies. If your muesli is a little meagre on the fruit front you can always add some extra and just cut down on the cereal content accordingly. Of course will have to allow for any allergies to nuts etc, but the beauty of this recipe is if you opt for a gluten free muesli pretty much everyone can eat it.

This Month

Y

ou know Summer is over when you find yourself dreaming of a good hearty winter dish instead of a Summer Salad! Nothing beats pottering around my kitchen, or curling up with a good cook book whilst enjoying the aroma of a gently bubbling casserole or a Sunday roast. This months recipe combines two of the best seasonal foods – squash and mushrooms into a delicious caramelised accompaniment to your Sunday roast! Although we are approaching the end of the main growing season, even now some fruit and vegetables will be at their best – look out for figs, apples and quince growing locally. Mushroom & beetroot will also be fantastic, not to mention pumpkins of course. Don’t forget that if you carve a pumpkin for Halloween there are loads of easy ways to use the flesh including soups, casseroles or as part of a roasted vegetable dish. The seeds can also be roasted with a little olive oil and salt to make a really tasty snack. If you find a recipe you love then look out for Pumpkins on special offer after 31st October – you can pick up some real bargains, and they will keep in a cool dry place for at least 6-8 weeks, or if easier you can cook and freeze the flesh for use later.

In Season this month Fruit, Nuts & Fungi - Apples, blackberries, chestnuts, elderberries, figs, grapes, pears, quince, tomatoes, walnuts. Lots of lovely mushrooms; chanterelles, chestnuts, horse mushrooms, oyster mushrooms, parasol mushrooms, puffballs, giant shaggy ink caps and summer truffles Vegetables & Herbs - Beetroot, borlotti beans, broccoli, cabbages, carrots, cauliflower, celeriac, celery, chard, courgettes, fennel, kale, kohlrabi, leeks, onions, peppers, potatoes, pumpkins & squash, rocket, salsify, scorzonera, spinach, turnips Meat & Game - Duck, wild goose, grouse, guinea fowl, hare, mallard, partridge, pheasant, rabbit, venison, wood pigeon Fish & Shellfish - Cod, crab, eels, lobster, mackerel, mussels, oysters, prawns, scallops, sea bass, sprats, squid, brown & rainbow trout 14 | SE22 - October 2015

Roast Pumpkin & Mushrooms with Thyme Serves 8 with the Sunday Roast

Ingredients • 1kg (2lb 4oz) pumpkin or squash • 5 tablespoons olive oil • 4 tablespoons balsamic syrup (Filippo Berio is my favourite) • 8 sprigs thyme • 700g (1lb 9oz) chestnut mushrooms Method 1) Preheat the oven to 2000C/4000F/Gas 6. 2) Cut the pumpkin (peeled if you wish) into wedges, about 3cm (11/4in) thick at the thickest part, and remove the seeds. 3) Put the wedges in a roasting-tin in which they can lie in a single layer with space around them. Drizzle on 2 tablespoons of the olive oil and 2 tablespoons of the balsamic, season and add two-thirds of the thyme, tearing it with your hands. 4) Clean the mushrooms with kitchen paper and slice in half. Put these into another roasting-tin in a single layer and add the rest of the oil, balsamic and thyme. Season. Toss everything around. Make sure there is space around the mushrooms so they don’t sweat. 5) Roast the pumpkin for about 45 minutes, or until tender and a little caramelised. 6) Roast the mushrooms for about 35 minutes, until dark and roasted and any juices have evaporated. When ready, gently toss them together and serve immediately in a warm dish. ENJOY!

Fitness Tips

Meditation “Through sustained focus and meditation on our patterns, habits and conditioning, we gain knowledge and understanding of our past and how we can change the patterns that aren’t serving us to live more freely and fully.” (Yoga Sutra, III:18) When I talk to clients about meditation, the concept can seem quite alien to them, and some find it a real struggle. This is one of the drawbacks of modern city life; many of us have lost the art of knowing how to shut off. Practising mediation is quite simply learning to be still, to be quiet and to allow the body time to restore itself back to homeostasis and a place of calm. There are a lot of preconceptions about meditation and what it means; I was very dismissive of it when I first came across it, thinking this wasn’t something I had time for nor needed. The truth is, everyone would benefit from meditating, even if it’s only for ten minutes a day. The other misconception about meditation is that it involves being guided through a twenty minute dream-like state, or sitting in the Buddha position, or falling into a trance imagining yourself swimming with dolphins. Meditating to me is about taking some time, even just a few minutes, and spending it thinking about nothing else but your body and what’s going on. Your mind should be still, your thoughts should be boxed away, and the best way to start is to focus on your breathing. During a sales training day in my old City life, I can recall the sales director asked us all to sit in silence for several minutes and then make a note of the noises we could hear. Almost everyone came back with the same noises; passing traffic, pedestrians talking on their phones, the sounds of footfall on the pavement, the creaking of chairs, clothes rustling, and so on. No-one in the room (there were over 100 people there) said they heard the sounds of their breathing, despite it being the closest noise to them. This is because it’s something that we do automatically, and 16 | SE22 - October 2015

therefore we don’t hear it. What mediating does is bring your attention back to your breathing, and to allow you to focus on yourself again. In the same way that none of the salespeople in the meeting noticed their breathing because they were focusing externally on the white noise around them, if you’re focusing on your breathing you automatically block out the white noise around you so you can fully focus. I also find reading in a quiet area is similar to meditating, if you can find a peaceful spot. Just lying down and closing your eyes can also work. It’s all about quietening the mind and taking some time to consider how you’re feeling; the where, when and how isn’t important, as long as you can disconnect from the outside world. It’s now not uncommon to see sportspeople meditating and going through visualisation exercises before waiting to come onto the court, pitch, athletics field or enter the ring. They can do this in spite of the noise around them. I urge you to try it. Leanne Spencer @BodyshotPT www.bodyshot-pt.co.uk

As Patron of Brass for Africa, Alison is presenting this concert as part of the AICS, but in support of the charity's mission to make a positive change to the lives of disadvantaged children, young people and their communities in Africa through brass music and brass music education. All proceeds from the concert will benefit Brass for Africa. The first half will be a trumpet and piano recital 28 | SE22 - October 2015

There are a limited number of Special Package VIP tickets which will include a 6pm-7pm pre-concert drinks event hosted by Alison. The opportunity to learn and to play music together is quite literally life changing, especially for children surviving on the fringes of society in Africa. Rhianna (10 A or B grades) put her success down to all the times she came to school early for extra revision lessons. “We often stayed at school until 5pm to get things done too,” she said. “We knew it was time to get working really hard if we wanted to do well.”

There were many notable individual achievements. Amtul and her family, for example, were “overwhelmed” with her 12 A* or A grades.

Students at Harris Girls’ Academy East Dulwich are celebrating the academy’s best ever GCSE results, with 75% of students gaining five or more passes at grades A*-C in 2015, including English and Maths.

Peter who has read Losing It says it’s desperately funny, desperately engaging, desperately readable and desperately adorable.’ Helen will open up the evening with a short stand up performance, talk about her book and then we’ll open up to questions and generally have a good old chat as friends. Dulwich Hamlet FC - News

Community Comes Out In Force To Support Calais Appeal

W

ith the season well underway, Dulwich continue to keep up with the leagues early season pace setters. After disappointing defeats against Staines Town and away at rivals Leatherhead, the team bounced back with four wins out of five with the highlight perhaps the three nil away victory at Kingstonian. It was however the efforts co-ordinated by the Supporters’ Trust that took the headlines this month. With the harrowing scenes across national media of the refugee humanitarian crisis, the Trust worked with supporters to do what they could to assist those in need. An appeal was put out to supporters and the local community for provisions to be donated for transport to refugees in Calais. Tinned goods, clothes, tents, sleeping bags and toiletries were among the key items requested and to say that we were overwhelmed by response is an understatement. Hamlet Supporters and the wider local community began arriving in force hours before the game against Billericay. By 2pm the Trust were putting out another call to deal with the sheer volume of donations that just kept arriving. In the coming days The Independent, The Press Association and Channel Four News all published stories about the appeal leading to another day of bumper donations on the following Tuesday when we took on Leatherhead. Any storage at the Club was creaking under the sheer weight of donations and the appeal for items came to end. The community continued to help in force, with fifty people arriving

the next day to help sort and box up the donations. Big Yellow Storage Company in West Norwood donated some storage space and Global Freight Solutions provided a van and driver to help transport the donations into storage. During October, two Trust board members will be among those transporting the items to France. The owners of the football club, Hadley property group have agreed to cover the costs of the transport and we are delighted at the way in which the community has pulled together for this initiative. If you’d like to help then donations are still being made towards the cause where Hamlet supporters have already raised over £1200 www.gofundme.com/9h3c4ay8 We’d like to thank everyone involved at a time when our community really pulled together. THE HOME GAMES IN OCTOBER ARE • 3rd October – VCD Athletic • 6th October – Staines Town • 13th October – Met Police • 17th October – Brentwood Town • 27th October – Mertsham PLEASE CHECK: www.pitchero.com/clubs/dulwichhamlet, for further details and information on all of Hamlet's fixtures this season. Financial Matters

Retirement Planning 2015 Style!

T

here may be a new approach to retirement planning sweeping the country. Billy Holiday used to sing out the words, “Mama may have, Papa may have, But God bless the child that's got his own” from her hit God Bless the Child. However, today Billy’s words have been abandoned as many a person wish to be life-long dependents. Recent research findings by insurance company LV= found: 1) One in three (35%) of the working population say they are reliant on inheritance for future financial stability; 2) One in five (20%) say they won’t be able to comfortably retire without such help. Despite the findings of those waiting on the inheritance train, the same research had bad news for those waiting passengers. Approximately, one in four (24%) retirees planned to leave nothing to heirs or give their cash to charity. The most common thing that those awaiting the inheritance train said that they would do with an inheritance was to pay off their mortgage and clear other outstanding debts. It does beg the question, what are they doing with their current earnings and should they be amassing a debt and awaiting a fairy godmother to bail them out? One in six people (16%) said they would use inherited funds to bolster their retirement savings. For those individuals that are hoping to be left an inheritance, the number of people leaving significant amounts to the younger generation is falling, with most people leaving less or nothing at all. Whilst some may claim this is unfortunate, is it really such a sad thing? According to LV=’s research, a quarter of retirees (28%) say they don’t expect to leave much to their children. A fifth (20%) say they intend to spend their money enjoying their retirement rather than leave it behind and 4% say they will follow Bill Gates and Warren Buffett’s lead and leave their cash to charity. The latter will at least reduce their inheritance tax liability.

48 | SE22 - October 2015

Without such help many working people admit that they would be unprepared for their later years. One in five (20%) say they will struggle to retire comfortably without inheriting and a quarter (25%) will have to work longer than planned should they not receive such a windfall. Perhaps some of those people awaiting the fairy godmother or the family inheritance bail out subscribe to the words of Ronald Regan, “It's true hard work never killed anybody, but I figure, why take the chance?” There may still be time for those waiting on the platform for that inheritance train to seek an alternative route to their lifestyle planning. John Perks, Managing Director of LV= Retirement Solutions, said: “People now spend almost as long in retirement as they do in the workplace, so it’s worrying to see that many people say they are reliant on something essentially out of their control to provide them with a comfortable retirement.” A five step strategy for financial survival for tomorrow is as follows: 1) Review your current spending behaviour, today; 2) Identify how you may plug the holes of any excessive spending; 3) Identify any potential scope to increase your earnings; 4) Start your financial planning from today to avoid misery tomorrow; 5) Take responsibility for planning your own financial future rather than leave it to chance or somebody else. Now is the time to wake up, get up and step up! A windfall tomorrow is always nice to have but many a person has been disappointed when they receive less than they expected or in some cases nothing at all. Pets Corner

Pets & Fireworks

W

ith the season of mists and mellow fruitfulness now upon us, heralding all the snug delights of darker autumn nights, the impromptu fireworks ‘do’ is top of many party lists. Private pyrotechnics are a popular way to add sparkle to any seasonal gathering, but they are also the bane of many pets and their owners. If you have a puppy or a kitten and this will be your first winter together, be warned, fireworks season begins soon and goes on for a very long time, well beyond New Year; early preparation is a must. Top of the list has to be the good will of your neighbours. Let them know you have a dog or cat and ask them to tell you when garden fireworks are on the cards. We can all prepare for organised events, but it is those sudden bangs and swooshes from the garden a few doors down, that can cause most damage. Not all pets are scared of fireworks, some seem to get used to them. However, where young animals are concerned it is best to assume the worst and stay safe. Very old animals can also get a sudden fright, the result of failing senses, where once familiar sights and sounds suddenly become unfamiliar and scary. Again, don’t take any chances. Keep your elderly pet safe with these simple tips. • Ensure dogs and cats are shut in the house before dusk. Feed early and get pets out early to urinate and defecate. • Cat flaps should be locked. Cats may need a litter tray to see them through the night. • Do not walk your dog when there are fireworks about. Make the morning walk the big one of the day and aim to provide indoor entertainment in the evening. • Unless they are clearly terrified, playing with your pet, whether cat or dog, is a great way to build positive associations with firework sounds. • Make the games rambunctious, play tuggy with the dog, get the cat to chase a toy on a string. Running around counters anxiety. • Aim to block out disturbing visual stimuli, like flashing lights. Close curtains and blinds. Turn the house lights up bright.

50 | SE22 - October 2015

• Create a sound wall by turning up radios and TV’s, loud. Break out the weekly wash. Washing machines are a great way to block noise from outside. • Be calm but upbeat. Do not actively reassure your pet or keep checking in with glances- this communicates to your pet that you are worried and seeking reassurance! • If your pet is anxious he can be allowed to lie beside you, so long as you are not actively encouraging this. • It is a good idea to create a covered, dark den at the core of the house, where your pet can hide if they want. Owners that have crate trained their dog or pup will be ahead of the game. Deep, cardboard boxes are also great. Deaden firework noise by covering the den with a heavy blanket. Get your pet used to the den now. Fill it with treats and toys, to make it a desirable, safe space. • Use products like Feliway, Adaptil and Pet Remedy sprays to calm pets on the night. • If your pet is already highly anxious around fireworks and other loud noises, seek specialist help. Your vet together with a qualified behaviourist can advise on treatment and a range of sedating and anti-anxiety drugs to be used on the night. • Everyone should consider using one of a number of desensitising sound CD’s. Many pets can be taught over time that firework sounds are non-threatening. Don’t delay, start preparing now. Leonie St Clair - www.londondogstraining

Bulk Waste Collection Charging

F

rom 1 October Southwark Council will start charging for Bulk Waste Collection. The charge will be £16 per collection of up to ten items. This new charging regime seems a false economy. We can expect extra fly tipping from people avoiding this charge. We have won a tiny concession around people on benefits not being charged but I’ve yet to see the full details. Please don’t be discouraged from disposing of bulky waste responsibly. You might want to club together with a neighbour to use your full quota of up to ten items for each £16 collection fee.

East Dulwich Police Team The Mayor of London is currently considering whether to stop employing Police Community Support Officers. Currently we have two per ward across London and they make a material difference to local policing. Fingers crossed common sense prevails and we keep ours. What ever your political persuasion I hope you lobby a GLA Assembly Member to keep them.

Lordship Lane Crown Post Office I’ve now had confirmation that the complete revamp of our main local Post Office on Lordship Lane is expected during the first two weeks of October. It will be closed for one Saturday morning to enable a complete weekend of building works to proceed. New shop front, counters, layout. Hopefully this will help turn this Post Office financial losses around and ensure it’s longterm survival. So please be patient while this refurbishment takes place.

trees. More crime prevention. What do you think we should fund to make East Dulwich better? If you’d like any help with making an application please get in touch.

Melbourne Grove At the last Dulwich Community council, we heard from a deputation with a massive petition against one of the options being considered in a soon to be started study about traffic speeding and volumes along the southern end of Melbourne Grove. The study is expected to report back in the Spring. Around early summer, residents in the area will be consulted on possible options. Please do tell me if you think we do or don’t have such problems there or indeed on your road.

Good Luck For The Future For those few SE22 residents living in South Camberwell ward I’m sorry but you have a by-election. One of the councilors for South Camberwell, Chris Gonde has resigned due to pressures of the councilor role being too much on his family life. I sympathise with him and wish him and his young family well. Hopefully the byelection on Thursday the 15 October will have a good turn out.

Cleaner, Greener, Safer Projects The latest round of devolved capital and revenue funding has been launched and you have until 9 November to submit your ideas to make the area Cleaner, Greener and or Safer and apply for funding. Green Up Your Roof!

I

f you have a shed or extension you’d like to make an attractive feature of, it’s well worth considering a green roof. Green, also called living roofs, can be retrofitted or installed at the time of building. While the idea may seem a bit daunting, they’re actually more straightforward than you’d think and have a host of benefits from attracting birds, bees and butterflies to improving air quality and keeping your building warm in winter and cool in summer - not to mention being very pretty to look at. They can also help with your planning application, Southwark Council and the Dulwich Estate are quite sensitive to any effort to improve the local biodiversity.

What plants can I use? Sedum roofs are particularly popular - I’ve noticed lots popping up locally. Sedum are ideal as they’re tough, drought resistant and don’t need much soil. There are lots of varieties to choose from often turning a rich red in autumn and all flowering at different times, producing a neat carpet of different textures and colours throughout the year. Wildflowers can also be used. The roof of the Horniman museum’s library building is a largescale example - spot the mass of dancing white ox eye daisies in spring. The Café on the Rye also displays a mini meadow on its roof every year. The advantage in using perennial wildflowers is you’ll have a more diverse range of plants, that’ll vary from year to year - and in turn attract more wildlife. But they’re heavier than sedum as they require a deeper growing medium and are only in flower for half of the year. Or for the best of both worlds, you could even have a combination of sedum and wildflowers.

compost – not usually a problem with sedum but might mean adding extra support to a shed or with bigger projects, consulting a structural engineer. The basic layers needed include a water and root proof membrane (such as a pond liner), a drainage layer and above that the growing medium that best suits your plants –something mainly inorganic, lightweight and free draining. When it comes to planting, the simplest option is using a sedum mat or wildflower turf that rolls out (sedumgreenroof.com sell both). Otherwise you can plant out plugs individually or even scatter a green roof seed mix. You’ll also need to consider drainage – usually holes cut into the frame to allow water to flow onto the guttering.

What about maintenance? On the whole they’re pretty low maintenance. A new sedum roof will need watering once a week for the first three months, but after that should take care of itself. Meadow planting will need to be mowed once a year in the autumn and may need watering in long hot spells - especially in the first year. So if you’ve been inspired, now (autumn) is a great time to install one before it gets too chilly– or wait until spring, giving plants time to get established before the summer.

What is involved? It depends on how big the roof is and how handy you are. It is possible to construct a green roof yourself, or speak to your architect, builders or specialist companies. You’ll need to make sure the structure can withhold the weight of sodden 54 | SE22 - October 2015

The Last Word – Emma Gladstone eating and drinking outside. When we first moved here we were at the rather uneventful end of the high street, but now it’s become foodie heaven, and now even with a new cinema.

What do you most value about the area?

I travel a lot for work, and relish the fact that when I am at home I don’t need to go on public transport or get in a car. Everything is in walking distance. I have a shopping trolley. My daughter will not walk near me when I take it out.

Do you know your neighbours?

We know our neighbours on both sides and opposite. It’s a good mix of people–families, single folk, some privately owned houses, some rented. It is part of what makes the area work.

What’s your favourite place for a night out?

I am out so often in the evenings for work that my favorite thing to do for a night out is a night in with family and friends.

Where are you likely to be found on Saturday?

As Artistic Director and Chief Executive of Dance Umbrella, I programme and produce choreography for our international festival, which takes place across London each October. This year the festival runs from 15th – 31st October and we’re showing work in 19 venues, and doing several city-wide tours, including one that takes us to Brockwell Park – Walking Stories. How long have you lived in the area?

I have lived in East Dulwich for 11 years. I moan about it taking time to get home after seeing shows for work in town, but It’s actually the best placed I have lived in London.

What brought you here?

Love. My husband is from the area, and just before we got married we moved from Tufnell Park N7 to here. As a born and bred north Londoner it seemed a big move at the time, but I would never move back north now.

When I am in London then I head to the market for some rosemary bread, visit Raoul in the Cheese Block, get a copy of the FT (good arts coverage) and do some cooking which I don’t have time to do in the week. I would like to say I can be found at Park Run every 9am in Dulwich Park, but the number of times I have physically managed to make it are somewhat less than the number of times I have imagined myself there.

What is your favourite place to eat?

Franklins, Tandoori Nights and Hisar. They represent a pretty good mix of what’s on offer on Lordship Lane, and of London, really. The book I’m reading at the moment.. Annie Dillard’s The Writing Life. For some reason I bought it as an audio book, and then on a long journey last weekend I realized I could listen to it while I was driving. It’s about a writer’s life, and the process of writing and had many parallels for me to how you make any work of art, including choreography. It is so often about not knowing where you are going, but trusting the way.

My secret ambition..

To get the Park Run more often…

What has changed most during that time?

The number of people sitting out at tables on Lordship Lane. I walked up the road the other day and counted seven places in close proximity with people relaxing 56 | SE22 - October 2015
