Around Dulwich with Sarah Pylas October News
W
e have embraced the start of the new school year and all of the routine that comes with it. The long days of summer are but a distant memory as our attention returns to homework, swimming lessons, PTA cake sales and - for pupils entering Year 6 - secondary school open mornings! We did an early tour of a few of the local secondary schools in the area (our son has just started in Year 5) as we wanted to get a feel for them, but will go back again with him next September. Anyway, back to the here and now! The Catford Gin Festival returns this month (5-8 October) at The Broadway Theatre. The 3-day festival is hosted by the Forest Hill Gin Club and Team Catford and sponsored by Fever Tree Premium Tonic Water. It will showcase local distillers such as Dulwich based Fatty’s Organic Gin alongside those from further afield. The Herne Hill Music Festival is also back (514 October) and this year promises to be bigger and better than ever with events for everyone. If you would like to meet others over tea, coffee and cake, then St John’s Church by Goose Green hosts a regular coffee morning every Wednesday with a guest speaker on the 2nd Wednesday of the month. Well done to our esteemed Editor, Angela, for her very interesting talk in September. Thirty of the best art students from The Charter School North Dulwich will get the opportunity to be exhibited and then sold alongside art greats at the Secret Charter Art Sale (15th October) at Dulwich Picture Gallery. It’s a lucky dip with an astonishing difference and for only £40 art lovers could walk away with an original Tracey Emin, Sir Antony Gormley, Julian Opie or Gary Hume. With half-term then upon us (22-26 October), keep an eye out for various family-friendly activities in the area. This week also officially marks the end of British Summertime. As our evenings grow darker and longer, expect homes in and around Dulwich to take on a ghoulish makeover for Halloween (31 October). Troops of wizards, witches, and scary superheroes will storm the streets in search of treats. But, do they also have a few tricks up their spooky sleeves? Next month, there are a few popular events that should definitely be booked in advance to avoid disappointment. Lambeth Fireworks will light up Brockwell Park (3 November) with two dazzling fireworks displays. There will also be a myriad of street food traders and a funfair to offer something for everyone, families and adults alike, across the whole evening.

Following their sell-out UK tour, the Scummy Mummies are coming to Catford Broadway Theatre (9 November) with a brand new comedy show, which promises new songs, new sketches and new catsuits! Join Ellie and Helen as they celebrate the scummier side of parenting, from drinking wine at teatime to hiding from the PTA. I have already booked my ticket! I’m also looking forward to the Link Age Southwark 25th Birthday Gala Dinner at Dulwich College with special guest speaker, Jo Brand. It should be a glorious evening of fine dining and entertainment including a raffle, auction and wonderful musical performances. All proceeds will go to help Link Age Southwark continue their inspirational work in supporting older people to thrive in later life. Details of all local events and ticket information can be found on our website and on Instagram @arounddulwich.

Garden Talk with Janine Winlaw
Give Your Garden The Autumn Wow Factor
T
he warmth of summer may be a distant memory, but autumn can be a spectacular month – especially on those bright clear days when everything glows. It’s a joy to see autumn trees in the park or countryside but there are plenty of smaller trees and shrubs that’ll light up your own garden with fiery shades of red and gold. There are shiny hips and berries a plenty in October too. Here’s my pick.
Trees My new favourite tree for autumn colour is Parrotia Persica (Persian ironwood) whose large leaves turn from yellow to brilliant orange and pink– followed by clusters of bright red flowers. It also has striking grey peeling bark when mature and looks particularly stylish as a multi-stem. It’s spreading and can eventually get quite big (up to 6m) so it does need space. Amelanchier lamarckii is a smaller and more easily sourced tree that is also grown as a multi- stem. As well as stunning golden orange autumn leaves, it has white spring blossom and summer berries. Similarly acers (Japanese maple) are good trees for urban gardens that turn lovely hues in October. Acer palmatum ‘Atropurpureum’ is a neat and elegant variety with purple leaves turning scarlet in autumn. As well as fab spring blossom, Prunus (cherry trees) also tend to have amazing colour this time of year. P. 'Pink Perfection' is a small, spreading cherry with gorgeous pinky orange autumn foliage. Finally Sorbus ‘Joseph Rock’ (Rowan) is another fab tree with magnificent scarlet leaves and clusters of yellow autumn berries.
Stunning Shrubs One of the best shrubs for autumn colour are Cotinus (Smoke bush). C. ‘Grace’ looks stunning when the light shines through its pinky red translucent leaves. C. Coggyria ‘Royal Purple’ is a slightly neater variety with smaller leaves. For autumn berries pyracantha are hard to beat. There are red varieties but I particularly like the orange and yellow varieties such as ‘Saphyre Jaune’, ‘Saphyre Orange’ and ‘Orange Glow’. A 12 | SE22 - October 2018

tough thorny shrub – it’s best trained against a wall. Or for a real wow factor, try Callicarpa ‘Profusion’ which has clusters of amazing pinky purple berries in October, stunning against the golden/purple autumn leaves. It’s also great for vases. The shiny red hips on many species roses are another way of adding stunning colour this season. Rosa glauca has lovely clusters of deep red hips that contrast beautifully with the grey foliage. Finally, although not the obvious choice for autumn colour, hydrangeas look great when the white flowers take on pink tinges from September onwards. The paniculata varieties such as ‘Limelight’ or ‘Pinky Winky’ are particularly pretty.
Flowers Finally if I were to choose one flower for autumn interest, it would be cyclamen. The delicate white and pale pink flowers look stunning carpeting bare earth under trees. C. hederifolium is a hardy autumn flowering species with beautifully marbled leaves. It needs to be planted en mass to have an impact.

Fitness tips with Leanne Spencer
Is It Good For Me To Take A Nap Or Not?
I
used to have a very dismissive attitude towards napping. I wouldn’t have it. I thought no, I don’t need to sleep. Sleep’s for the evening. But, I completely changed my mind. I equate sleep to going out for a long day and taking a spare battery to boost your mobile phone. Taking a nap is the same thing. If I’ve got a long day, a hard day, a creative day, or I’ve had a bad night’s sleep, no problem. I’ll just go and have a 20, 30-minute nap if I can. Recharge my batteries and then crack on again. Is taking a nap good for you? Science confirms that yes, it is. But, there are some conditions. A nap is ideally taken between 12 and 2pm. Any later than that, and you might be cutting it a bit fine, chipping into your evening sleep. It’s very good to bolster a poor night’s sleep. But 20 to 30 minutes won’t take you deep into that sleep cycle of REM sleep. It’s been found to improve focus and creativity, so there are some real positives. Focus is something that we would all like to have a little bit more of, and it will boost this in the middle of the day. Plus, creativity. For problem solving, we know that sleep is beneficial. There’s a myriad of studies that have found that sleeping boosts creativity and helps us to solve problems. It also helps us to retain information that’s another real benefit to sleep, particularly napping. Try and think about having a polyphasic sleep pattern if you can. I appreciate for some of you that work in offices, it’s not always possible. Although what I am doing is trying to campaign for, for people in corporates, is to bring in sleep pods, sleep centres and recovery rooms, so that we can go and take that nap if we need to. But, we’re some way off that. Think about polyphasic sleeping, if you can. Certainly, at the weekend, can you catch a nap for 20, 30 minutes on a Saturday or a Sunday? Polyphasic sleeping is sleeping in stages; maybe it’s getting four sleep cycles, about four hours or six hours of sleep in the evening, and then catching another nap in the afternoon to boost your sleep. That would be polyphasic sleeping.

If you are taking a nap, the final thing I suggest is having an eye mask and quietening your mind, just to make the most of that short period you’ve got. The eye mask will just block out any light which can encourage the brain to think it’s awake and not sleeping. That of course is a problem with taking a nap. It’s out of our circadian rhythm. So, the answer is yes. The studies have found that taking a nap is good for you. If you can, try it. Cap it at 30 minutes, wear an eye mask, and just quieten the mind down a little bit before, so you can go off relatively quickly. Leanne Spencer @BodyshotPT www.bodyshotperformance.com

Dulwich College: a Cradle of Writers? Thursday 4 October 2018, 6.30-9pm, Dulwich College Patrick Humphries, Simon Brett and Tom Rob Smith in conversation with Dr Joe Spence, Master of Dulwich College. It is widely known that PG Wodehouse was a proud old boy of Dulwich College. It is a little less well-known that Raymond Chandler, CS Forester and Dennis Wheatley were also alumni. Or that two Booker prize winning writers, Michael Ondaatje and Graham Swift, attended the school in the 1950s and ‘60s respectively. And that Booker-nominated Tom McCarthy (‘C’ ) and Tom Rob Smith (Child 44) followed them in the 1980s and 90s.
The GE Moore Lecture Series: In 2019 Dulwich College will celebrate its 400th anniversary. To mark this milestone the College has created a lecture series, each reflecting an aspect of the College’s life and history. The series has been named after one of the College’s most influential Old Alleynians. This is the 12th lecture in the series.
We are delighted to have Patrick Humphries OA, the author of biographies of Nick Drake, Bruce Springsteen and Richard Thompson, who has been commissioned to write a personal account of the Dulwich writers he remembers reading in his youth, popular Old Alleynian writer Simon Brett OBE (Charles Paris, Mrs Pargeter, Fethering, Blotto and Twinks and After Henry) and Tom Rob Smith in conversation with Dr Joe Spence, Master of Dulwich College.
Tickets £10, available from lectureseries@dulwich.org.uk 6.30 – 7pm Drinks reception in the James Caird Hall 7 – 8.30pm Lecture in the George Farha Auditorium

Please join us for a conversation about the life and works of these writers and to discuss why Dulwich College might have produced a disproportionate number of eminent and popular authors over the past 120 years – and hopes to do so again over the course of the next century, as it progresses towards its 500th anniversary.

ccording to the Oxford Student’s Dictionary, the word ‘Drama’ relates to an exciting or emotional series of events. Bryony Foley and Becky Manning, Drama teachers at Alleyn’s Junior School, tell us about the benefits of Drama for children and how to get your child involved.
The Benefits Drama helps children explore feelings, make sense of events, and encourages empathy, collaboration, and teamwork. This helps to increase a child’s confidence and self-belief – all while having fun.
Encouraging The Young Ones Remember that a love of performance often starts with the dressing up box and you are your child’s first audience and play-mate. Help them to make the most of it: Read to your child and tell them stories to ignite their imagination. Have fun with role-play: Taking on the role of a character in a story will help your child gain insight into what they are reading and connect it to the real world. Role-play can also be a powerful tool to prepare for real life situations, like a first day at school. Use puppets: Puppets can give a shy child an opportunity to speak through something else. You can create a simple puppet together with a card and craft sticks and make them into any character you choose. Play language games to develop language and imagination: One favourite is a word-at-a-time story, where you take turns telling a story, one word at a time. Children soon learn that what they say needs to make semantic sense, but may be as wacky and funny as their imagination dictates. Use improvisation: A simple start is by letting them dance around to music, and freeze when the music stops. At a signal, they come to life as any character they like, moving and speaking as that character.
Being Part Of An Audience Watching theatre is thought provoking, educational and fun. There are plenty of opportunities in our local area to see performances, whatever your 26 | SE22 - October 2018
child’s age, most notably the Unicorn Theatre and the Polka Theatre, but you can also benefit from innumerable opportunities to see productions of every genre in central London.
Drama In And Out Of School Many schools encourage drama and your child may have the opportunity to participate in collaborative performances such as class assemblies and plays or in individual performances such as talent shows, comedy evenings and poetry competitions. Even a reluctant performer will find a way to express themselves, especially when given the opportunity to ‘become’ another character, and all children will benefit from the confidence boost these experiences offer. Outside school, there are many local groups where children can explore their dramatic instincts and express themselves, and a local club can be a fantastic way of giving children an opportunity to experience drama and make new friends. Financial Matters with David Frederick
Savings Bonus For New Savers
I
t finally arrived on 12 September 2018, just like a late bus, albeit without the clamouring for access. First promised by former prime minister, David Cameron, in March 2016, the government has launched the new ‘Help to Save’ savings account. The headline attraction of the new account is it allows savers to earn a 50% bonus per pound saved over four years. Don’t all rush at once! The account is aimed at those on low income. In support of the new account John Glen, Economic Secretary to the Treasury said: “Savings shouldn’t be a luxury, they are an essential part of planning for the future. But for some, putting away even a tenner each month can be a tough habit to get into. Whether you’re saving up to take the family on a much-needed holiday, or to take the next step in life, Help to Save is designed to make saving possible for every hardworking person in this country.” Help to Save is only open to UK residents who fall into the following two camps: 1) entitled to Working Tax Credit and receiving Working Tax Credit or Child Tax Credit payments; or 2) receiving Universal Credit and had a household income in their last monthly assessment period of £542.88 or more. In addition, members of the British armed forces or Crown servants or their spouse or civil partner, living overseas can also open a Help to Save account. Savers can save a maximum of £50 per calendar month. However, savers are not required to save every month. The account has a fixed period of four years, which will see the account closed after year four. The benefits to savers are two tax free bonuses at the end of year two and year four. The first bonus will be 50% of the highest balance saved in the first two years. The final bonus will only be paid, if the saver continued to save after year two. The bonus will be 50% of the savings paid into their account above the highest balance
34 | SE22 - October 2018
saved in the first 2 years. If the highest balance between year two and year four has not increased then savers will not receive the final year bonus. The bonus payments will be paid into the saver’s bank account and not their Help to Save account. The following example shows how the Help to Save account operates. A qualifying individual who saves £25pm for the first 2 years without making any withdrawal over the first two years will have saved £600. Their first bonus will be £300, which is 50% of £600. If, in year 3 and 4 they saved an additional £200, their highest balance will grow from £600 to £800. Their final bonus will be £100, which is 50% of £200. Their bonus will not be affected by any withdrawals they may have made in their third and fourth year of saving. Any withdrawals during the four years will only restrict savers from achieving their highest balance and their ability to earn the largest possible bonus. Saving via a Help to Save account may affect savers’ eligibility for certain benefits and how much they will receive. However, savers or their partners’ with £6,000 or less in personal savings will not see their Universal Credit or Housing Benefit affected. The new account can only be opened via a Government Gateway account and applicants must have a UK bank account. To access the Government Gateway requires access to the internet. However, a Help to Save account can still be opened if a prospective saver does not have internet access. A call to 0300 322 7093 will provide access to helpline advisers, to begin the application process.

Dulwich Hamlet FC - News
October News
A
t the time of writing, Dulwich Hamlet are preparing to play in the Second Qualifying Round of the FA CUP, having been given a home tie against current Isthmian football league leaders Tonbridge Angels. Whilst our crowds have been good at Tooting and Mitcham, especially during the traditionally quiet late August / early September period, they are currently below what we recently were achieving at Champion Hill. Significantly, a reduction in crowds means a reduction in match day revenue and this does not only affect the current budget of the club, but also hinders the goal of securing its long-term future. A good run in the FA Cup could bring in some much needed revenue to the club, with the winners of this round securing £9,000 in prize money. Securing a game in the First Round Proper would not only be a fantastic achievement for the club but could also bring with it a big financial windfall. The last time Dulwich reached this round was in 1998, when they lost at home against Southport, who knows maybe we could end be playing a Football League team at home in a televised game!! Concerning attendances, the Football Club and Trust are working hard to encourage people to make the journey to our temporary home in the London Borough of Merton and one particular group we have seen in attendance less, since the enforced move, are families. Whilst many families still regularly attend games, we are not seeing as many as we did before we moved away from our home in East Dulwich. The previously short walk down Edgar Kail Way has been replaced with an 8 mile drive in busy Saturday afternoon south London traffic, or a trip by public transport. With that in mind the Supporters’ Trust are due to host a family day at the game against Chippenham Town on 29 September. By hosting this family day, we hope to ensure that our younger supporters enjoy their visit to Imperial Fields and leave wanting to come back for more.
36 | SE22 - October 2018
If you have not been to a watch a Dulwich home games since we left Champion Hill or have never been to a game, we would love to see you down at imperial Fields. Fixtures and travel directions can be found on both the club (dulwichhamlet.co.uk) and Trust (DHST.org.uk) websites. Since leaving Champion Hill we have been separated from our beloved Supporters’ Trust merchandise shop, the Mega-container. Last week it finally joined us at Imperial Fields. Thanks to the assistance of Tooting and Mitcham, we have managed to secure a location for the shop within the ground and we hope to soon have it fully functional on match days. Whilst one of our main goals is to see Dulwich Hamlet playing back at Champion Hill as soon as possible, we realised that it had become a necessity that the Megacontainer was temporarily re-located to this ground. If you are unable to attend home match days, a full range of merchandise can found on our online shop (dhstshop.co.uk) Finally, thank you to all those supporters who donated items to last month’s food bank collection. In recent years we have seen that more and more people are having to rely on food banks to supplement their weekly groceries, so it was good to see, yet again, the generosity of supporters of Dulwich Hamlet attending the game and donating to the Wimbledon Food Bank. I understand that the club has planned to hold another food bank collection later in the season, this time for Southwark Food Bank. Mark Scoltock DHST Spokesperson

SE22 Councillors - Jon Hartley Dulwich Hill Ward
Open Spaces
O
pen spaces provide a vital green lung to all of us living in London. With my colleague Maggie Browning, I represent Dulwich Hill, an area with much loved greenery. Residents often tell us how much they value our local open spaces; whether they use facilities within the ward such as Camberwell Old Cemetery or Dulwich Hill, or those just outside like Peckham Rye, One Tree Hill and Dulwich Park. As your local councillors, Maggie and I work with local people who are interested in our local spaces, along with councillors in adjacent areas, other local authorities and Southwark council officers. We're keen to here what you enjoy about our local open spaces. Whether to tell us about concerns or just to let us know how much fun your family is having in the amazing new Peckham Rye playground! We've been working with residents and local groups on how to improve Dawson's Hill. Meetings on the Hill with local people and Parks officers have helped clarify how we can best spend the money we have secured for improving a Park that is loved locally. The challenge in our larger Parks is often the balance that needs to be struck between regular users and larger events. For the Council, there is increased need in this time of austerity to encourage extra funds to help cover the cost of maintaining the Parks. A recent example of this challenge was the Gala festival. Following local concerns about the possible impact on Peckham Rye Park and noise in the surrounding area, we were able to ensure that many of the issues raised were taken on board by the event organisers. In the end there were few complaints during the event weekend and the Park is now (almost) back to normal. Perhaps the trickiest of our local green areas recently has been Camberwell Old Cemetery, where the need to open long unused areas to new burials is a real source of local concern.
38 | SE22 - October 2018
Community Wildlife Garden on Peckham Rye Park - Photo Šwww.peckhamryepark.org We will keep working with residents to address issues about the works that are planned and how they are carried out. There have been some vociferous campaigns against any changes, but Southwark Councillors take the view that we have to continue providing a place for people to be buried locally. This is actually a great example of our predecessors representing the area over a century ago - making provisions that still serve people's needs today. We can only hope that the decisions we make will be as useful to the local community of the future.

Muzzle-up
I
n my view every dog should be taught to wear a muzzle. For most owners there may only ever be a few times in the dog’s life it will be necessary but for others wearing a muzzle may need to be a regular thing. Let’s try to remove the social stigma of muzzles. A muzzle does not represent a failed owner or ‘nasty’ dog, it is a useful management tool towards a positive end. Let’s be clear, under certain conditions even a sweet tempered dog is capable of biting. Dogs have teeth and biting is part of what they can do when they feel seriously threatened. You will note that most veterinary practices are equipped with a large range of muzzles! Dogs that are anxious and panicky or dogs that are in pain, even if they are the nicest dogs in the world ordinarily, are capable of delivering a hard bite. Other dogs can learn that displays of aggression and later actual biting are an efficient way to get people or dogs they fear to back off fast. Owners of fearful dogs start to dread forays to the park or daily streetwalks, in case their dog reacts to something with a lunge and snarl. All that anxiety soon becomes a catch-22 making both dog and owner more and more stressed. Teaching the dog to wear a muzzle can help reduce anxiety quite considerably. The owner knows that even if the dog lunges and snarls he cannot connect and cause damage, this helps the owner relax and if the owner is calm this also helps the dog. Quite a number of dogs are extremely space or touch sensitive, they do not welcome being manhandled by strange humans and their children or approached by strange dogs. If a dog is wearing a muzzle it is a very strong visual signal that a dog should not be approached and this helps dog and owner relax, meaning that the dog may eventually learn not to be so worried about strangers. If a dog is anxious and looks like he might bite the owner of that dog may fall foul of the Dangerous Dogs Act. A dog that is on lead and muzzled is viewed in law as ‘under control’.

Some words of warning. It is not wise to let a muzzled dog off lead to interact with other dogs, he can still injure himself or other dogs with the muzzle on. Clearly a muzzled dog cannot defend himself around other dogs, so be careful if you are walking with other dogs on lead and ensure your dog is always kept safe. It is also not good practice to assume that because your dog is muzzled and cannot bite that you can now take him into all the situations that make him anxious. This could be very damaging. Instead, view the muzzle as a management tool and get the help of a qualified behaviourist to help with graduated exposure to situations that make your dog anxious. Getting the right muzzle for your dog is important. Generally I recommend the Baskerville Ultra but for dogs with very short muzzles or very long, thin muzzles a specialist muzzle is better. For more information on muzzle training and how to teach your dog to wear a muzzle so he is comfortable and happy to wear it visit The Muzzle Up! Is Worrying a Waste of Time?
W
e all worry at times. Worrying shows we care about our lives and the things and people that matter to us. But when worry becomes excessive it can make our lives less enjoyable. Time spent worrying is really time spent not living! This vicious cycle of negative thinking takes us ‘out of the moment’ and either back into the past, going over what has already happened, or into the future stressing about what may happen. The mind tends to want to remember and keep hold of worries. This makes sense if we are actually in danger. For example, if we’re being hunted by a hungry lion. In this situation we would definitely not want to lose the worry, we need the adrenaline to run away and save ourselves. But most worries are not life threatening or immediate and so replaying these thoughts in our minds like an endless cycle, hinders rather than helps us. And did you know that research has shown that about 80% of the things that we worry about DON’T happen! Mark Twain once said “I've had a lot of worries in my life, most of which never happened." This is so true! The majority of what we worry about never materializes in reality. So to answer the question “Is worrying a waste of time?” I say “YES”! Worrying also saps our energy, draining it from us and making us feel tired. I’m sure that if you asked an elderly person looking back on their life what they wished they’d done more of, the answer would not be “I wish I’d worried more”, (or “I wish I’d watched more TV,” but that’s a whole other subject!!)
So what can we do to combat worrying? If you’re identifying with this and are a bit of a worrier at times, here are some tips to help you deal with worries instead of letting them consume you:
Write your worries down Jot down your worries and this will get them out of your head and persuade your mind to forget them for a while. They are recorded in a permanent place, so it’s ok for the mind to let them go. 48 | SE22 - October 2018

Tell someone about it Talking about your worries will help you to release them; remember the saying; “A problem shared is a problem halved.” Whoever you decide to talk to; friends, family, your partner or a therapist, they may have some useful input, which could help you rationalize your fears and put your mind at rest.
Schedule your worry time Choose a time of the day and take 20-30 minutes, your pen and notebook and allow yourself to worry in this time. Carving out a block of time dedicated to worry time, will help you train your brain to not worry at other times and to enjoy your life more in the moment without negative thoughts interfering constantly.
What if your worries are out of control? Everyone has worries but if they are incessant and are really interfering with your life it may be that you’re suffering from anxiety. If this is the case you may need some outside help from a therapist, who will also teach you some coping strategies to deal with the anxiety. This in turn will help reduce your worrying and help you to move forward positively. Becca Teers – Author, Clinical Hypnotherapist www.healthy-habits.me | www.unlimited-book.com

Dir: Brian Helgeland USA / 132 minutes / Cert 18 Tom Hardy x 2 as the Kray twins, gentle fun loving charity…. Oh no, it’s those Kray Twins. This film makes more of Reggie’s relationship with his wife, Frances (who acts as posthumous narrator), than is normal (and hence less of their mother) and plays down none of the violence. Many recognisable London locations give realism to this story, including our very own Ivy House which, with surprisingly little dressing, becomes the setting for The Double R (The Krays' club).
