Welcome to SE22 I am well and truly celebrating this month as I have reached a landmark 200th issue of SE22 magazine. When I started the magazine back in March 2005, I don’t think I really thought of how long I would keep producing the magazine. But here I am nearly 17 years later and 200 issues. The support I have received over the years from advertisers, contributors and readers, has been fantastic. I am very grateful. Over the years I have had help along the way (Julie, Sarah and more) including my fantastic designer Stephen Shillito who designs most of my pages. But with so may new projects ideas in the pipeline, I am really pleased to say that I have now employed my first employee, who just happens to be my sister! Read my welcome to Emma page 31. As usual I have rounded up all the great events taking place in and around Dulwich. The events pages start on page 6. There are a packed seven pages of online and in person events happening in and around Dulwich. So there is plenty to do right on our doorsteps. The Last Word this month goes to a lovely young resident Zoë Miller. Zoë set up her own business BB Pads back in May and is an inspirtation. Please do read the full article on page 40. 7.30pm-9.30pm. Magnus set up the Aronowitz Ensemble in 2004, with his brother Guy and Tom as founder members. They are former BBC New Generation Artists, and between them they have won National and International competitions including BBC Young Musician of the Year, Scottish International Piano Competition and have been recipients of the Borletti-Buitoni Award and the Royal Society’s Inspiration Award. Magnus has guest led the Orchestra at the Royal Opera House and the Philharmonia amongst others, Guy was recently televised performing the SaintSaens Cello Concerto at the Proms, and Tom is currently artistic director of the Kaleidoscope Chamber Collective who are resident ensemble at London’s Wigmore Hall. Plant Cyclamen for a Sprinkling of Autumn Colour

or autumn and winter colour and interest, you can’t beat the hardy cyclamen. These little gems will brighten up the darker months with a sprinkling of pink and white. They die back and lie dormant in warm weather, popping up again when temperatures drop. Despite their dainty appearance, they flower away through frost and snow and when happy will eventually self-seed and spread around, carpeting shady spots. In autumn, just as many plants stop flowering, up pop the little heads of Cyclamen hederifolium. These dainty pink or white flowers often appear first, with their striking marbled, heart-shaped leaves following afterwards, forming a carpet after the flowers have finished. White varieties include C. hederifolium ‘Amaze Me’ and C. hederifolium albiflorum ‘Album’ with a mass of upright pure white flowers or for silvery leaves try C. hederifolium ‘Silver Cloud.’ These cyclamen originate from the Mediterranean and put up with quite dry, sunny conditions such as under shrubs or round tree roots - although they prefer some shade and like free draining, humus rich soil to avoid the tubers drying out in summer. Next, flowering from late December, Cyclamen coum flowers are a sign that a fresh New Year is on its way. The rounded, dark green leaves with white or silver markings appear first, so they’ll already have been growing from October. These tiny cyclamen look wonderful en mass, and are perfect for naturalising around the base of deciduous trees and are gorgeous with snowdrops, crocuses and other shade lovers such as ferns. The flowers of Cyclamen coum tend to be magenta pink, but come in a range of pinks to pure white. For something more unusual try varieties such as C. coum ‘The ‘Pewter Group’ which have a silvery coating on the leaves or

C. coum ‘Ashwood Snowflake’ with pure white flowers. These cyclamen like partial shade and humus-rich, well drained soil so dig in grit or leaf mould if you have heavy soil. Avoid manure as they like poorer soils and this will just produce leaves and no flowers. They also like dappled shade and moisture in autumn through to spring, which is when they grow below ground - long before they emerge. Both C.coum and C. hederafolium make lovely ground cover and are at their best planted in large groups. They look stunning underplanting silver birch trees, or popping up amongst inky black Ophiopogon planiscapus ‘Nigrescens.’ Tempting as it is, avoid planting C. hederifolium and Cyclamen coum together, as the former is more vigorous and will eventually take over. The larger, showier, non-hardy cyclamen are cultivars of Cyclamen persicum. They’re useful for winter window boxes and containers and come in a range of whites, magentas, reds and deep purples but are generally one-season wonders.

t is easy to end up with an awful lot of pumpkin at this time of year. If you have done ‘soup’ and ‘pie’ so many times you are in need of a change then this is a great option. It is a surprisingly wonderful moist cake bread which is best served thickly sliced and buttered with a cup of tea. It is also great for lunchboxes.

Ingredients • • • • • • • • •

175g butter, melted 140g clear honey 1 large egg, beaten 250g raw peeled pumpkin, or butternut squash, coarsely grated (about 500g/1lb 2oz before peeling and seeding) 1 grated English apple 100g light muscovado sugar 350g self-raising flour 1 tbsp ground cinnamon (or ginger) 2 tbsp Demerara sugar

Method Preheat the oven to 1800C/gas 4/fan 1600C. Butter and line the base and two long sides of a 1.5kg loaf tin with a strip of baking paper. Mix the butter, honey and egg and stir in the grated apple and the pumpkin or squash. Finally mix in the sugar, flour and cinnamon. Pour into the prepared tin and sprinkle the top with the Demerara sugar. Bake for 50-60 minutes, until risen and golden brown. Leave in the tin for 5 minutes, then turn out and cool on a wire rack. Serve thickly sliced and buttered. Enjoy!

Other Ways to Improve Balance and Coordination Some other perhaps overlooked ways, are things that use all of your senses. So if you’re walking and listening to a podcast, for instance, you’re using your coordination, stimulating the senses in different ways whilst doing something enjoyable. Standing during meetings can be a great way to engage mind and body. Sewing is great for focus and hand and eye coordination. Meditation has been proven to help with all kinds of coordination, balance and focus because it increases your focus, attention span and quality of your focus. All of these things can really help you become better at balance and coordination and also tune and improve your fine motor skills.

any of London’s Lockdown pets are having a hard time adjusting as the city returns to a new normal. The noises and events associated with everyday hustle and bustle have taken a toll on young animals experiencing many of these things for the first time. The hardest time will soon be upon us. Please do not underestimate the potentially negative impact of Halloween and the long fireworks season. For those of you with lockdown puppies or rescues please consider how sensitive your pet is to novelty or noise and have a plan. Top of the list has to be the good will of your neighbours. Let them know you have a dog or cat and ask them to tell you when and if garden fireworks are on the cards. We can all prepare for organised events, but it is the startling effect of sudden bangs and swooshes from neighbouring gardens that may cause most damage. Not all pets are scared of fireworks, some seem to get used to them. However, where young animals are concerned it is best to assume the worst and stay safe. Very old animals with failing senses can also get a sudden fright where once familiar sights and sounds suddenly become unfamiliar and scary. Again, don’t take any chances. Keep your elderly pet safe with these simple tips. Ensure dogs and cats are shut in the house before dusk. Feed early and get pets out early to urinate and defecate. If your dog goes ballistic at door noises put a polite notice up at your front door or gate at Halloween, explaining and asking people/children not to knock. Alternatively, switch off lights visible from the street and make out you are not home. Cat flaps should be locked. Cats may need a litter tray to see them through the night. Do not walk your dog when there are fireworks about. Make the morning walk the big one of the day and aim to provide indoor entertainment in the evening. Unless they are clearly terrified, playing with your pet, whether cat or dog, is a great way to build positive associations with firework sounds. Make the games rambunctious, play tuggy with the dog, get the cat to chase a toy on a string. Running around counters anxiety.

Aim to block out disturbing visual stimuli, whether children dressed up as ghouls or flashes from fireworks. Close curtains and blinds. Turn the house lights up bright. Create a sound wall by turning up radios and TV’s, loud. Washing machines are also a great way to block noise from outside. If your pet is anxious, he can of course lie beside you to help him feel secure. However, stay calm, no matter how anxious your pet is. If he wants to hide, let him. It is a good idea to create a covered, dark den at the core of the house, where your pet can hide if they want. Owners that have crate trained their dog or pup will be ahead of the game. Deep, cardboard boxes are also great temporary dens. Deaden firework noise by covering the den with a heavy blanket. Get your pet used to the den now. Fill it with treats and toys, to make it a desirable, safe space. If you know your pet is noise phobic or anxious speak to your vet about calming remedies and/or medication. Don’t delay. Those who feel their pet may have a problem can speak to their vet and behaviourist about treatment. Many pets can be taught over time that firework sounds are non-threatening.

And the crowds are back to see them do it. Champion Hill is bouncing to an average of 2000 of your fellow locals at each home game; a number that turns the atmosphere up to eleven, but which feels comfortable and Covid safe. You should come down to see East Dulwich’s finest. Buy a pint and a pie. And pat the many dogs that eagerly patrol the pitch’s perimeter for dropped and discarded food.

When Three Becomes Four The economic effects of the pandemic will be felt long into 2022, well at least until 31st March 2022 for businesses in the hospitality sector and their clients. That probably covers most of the population! The impact into March 2022 is based upon, the arrival of our fourth VAT rate. From 1st October 2021 - 31st March 2022 the rate of VAT on food, accommodation and entry fees to attractions increases from 5% to 12.5%. This forms part of the government’s ongoing package of measures to assist the hospitality sector. However, the increase in the VAT rate has not been widely welcomed by many in the sector. A restaurant owner who last February said, “this VAT increase is not helpful. In a time when we’re struggling with supply chain and staffing issues across the industry, as a result of the wider effects of Brexit and COVID-19. Many of us are still deep in arrears with rent, have Bounce Back Loans and other debt repayments which have been pushed back. An increase from April 2022 would be more appropriate timing, allowing us to grow through the typical bonus Xmas period.” In contrast the owner of an established and long-standing catering company said, “the VAT increase from 5% to 12.5% is going to have a monumental impact on our clients. We have picked up a huge amount of collection and reheat at home by new clients who are taking advantage of the reduction in VAT. Working from a commercial kitchen with overheads it means the wolf that has been kept from the door will now be knocking again!” To aid confusion the VAT rate was reduced from the standard rate of 20% to 5% in July 2020 as part of the government’s business aid package during the COVID-19 pandemic. Therefore, this increase is the government’s gradual step to return the hospitality sector to the standard rate of 20%. Despite the challenges encountered by the hospitality sector of the new 12.5% VAT rate, these businesses face more practical matters. Firstly, the adjustment of their tills to handle four VAT rates and secondly, the added complexity of 28 | SE22 - October 2021

their VAT reporting. This will not only be for the first quarter of the new increase but ongoing. However, hospitality businesses should not neglect the possibility of some VAT planning options and contact their accountant and tax advisors. With our minds on MTD (Making Tax Digital) just around the corner in April 2022; the practical challenges of four VAT rates might just spur the small business community to begin their MTD journey to embrace doing business in the digital age. It is just unimaginable to comprehend how businesses will cope with four VAT rates without a sophisticated sales receipting system. The reduced 12.5% rate VAT applies to the following: 1) Food and non-alcoholic beverages sold onpremises for consumption, for example, in restaurants, cafes and pubs. 2) Hot takeaway food and hot takeaway nonalcoholic beverages. 3) Admissions to attractions that are not already eligible for the cultural VAT exemption including: a) Theatres b) Circuses and fairs c) Amusement parks d) Concerts e) Museums and exhibitions f) Zoos g) Cinemas h) Sleeping accommodation in hotels or similar establishments, holiday accommodation, pitch fees for caravans and tents, and associated facilities. Sporting events and alcoholic drinks will not be subjected to the reduced VAT rate. The other three VAT rates remain unchanged. Standard rate, 20%, applicable to most goods and services; reduced rate, 5%, applies to certain goods and services (including children’s car seats and home energy); and zero rate, 0%, applicable to certain goods and services, including children’s clothes and most food items. Hospitality businesses using the Flat Rate Scheme will also enjoy a temporary reduced VAT rate. The future is certainly all about VAT in hospitality.

he Herne Hill Music Festival is excited to once again be back this year, offering a huge selection of 23 varied events. Throughout the lockdown both committee and performers have been working hard behind the scenes, curating a varied programme of stunning musical performances for you to enjoy in the comfort of local Herne Hill venues. Preluding on Friday 8th October in the Half Moon pub, there you can listen to some smooth latenight Jazz from singer-songwriter Nel Begley at 8pm. If tragic stories and historical performance is more your thing, then The Friend’s Musick Chamber Choir will be performing right down the road (in traditional costume), at the Prince Regent pub, also at 8pm. Commemorating the 420th Anniversary of the 1620 sailing of the Pilgrim Fathers in the Mayflower you can experience that fateful 66-days’ voyage across the Atlantic. The festival is also continuing on previous years’ successes in inviting our public to participate in open musical workshops. Empowering the youth through music, passionate music educator Margaret Omoniyi and her band invites your babies, toddlers and young children to St Paul’s Church Hall for a 90-minute workshop of singing, movement, instrument fun and props.

Don’t be surprised if parents are invited to join in! (Saturday 9th October at 11am). Later in the afternoon, there will also be an opportunity to watch a showcase of Youth Musical Talent from young musicians from local schools at St Saviour’s Hall at 3pm - please note this event is provisional. Later on Saturday evening, for this year’s Music For ‘Practical Action’ evening fundraising concert, we have invited Japanese concert pianist Haruko Seki for a spellbinding programme of keyboard classics at 7:30pm at St Faith’s Church. If jazz is more your style, then we are delighted to be bringing The Nigel Grice Quintet to perform for the first time at the festival, at the Prince Regent pub at 8pm. Sunday 10th brings the programme outdoors, with the Lambeth Wind Orchestra performing in the Bandstand in Brockwell Park at 1:30pm. There you can hear a mix of classical and popular tunes, where donations will be gratefully received. Nearby in the Community Greenhouses at 3pm, the Giant Folk trio will be playing a curious selection of jazz and folk music, inspired with an infusion of Irish and Scandinavian melodies. At 6pm head up the road to St Paul’s church, where we will once again be featuring a traditional Choral Evensong. On Monday 11th October, aspiring Jazz lovers will again be welcome to play along with their instruments as well as listen in our Jazz Jam session at the Off The Cuff bar, led by Roger Humbles at 8pm. Further down the arches on Tuesday 12th, enjoy another pint (or two) of local craft beer at Canopy Beer alongside a

ic Festival 2021 performance from the iyatraQuartet. There you can hear the velvety tones of clarinet alongside ambient mandolin and enchanting percussive tones, transporting you to a bygone age of ancient singing and folklore. Wednesday 13th brings an offering of country-style guitar and vocal music of Americana with Pete Bruntnell in the intimate setting of The Workshop at the back of the Half Moon Pub. Provisionally for the 14th October, it is hoped that once again that local school pupils will be invited to perform for the School Musical at St Saviour’s Hall. You have been warned however: the show from Tijuana Jazz ensemble on Thursday 14th at 8pm, is sure to have you leaving The Prince Regent Pub with tunes you can’t get out of your head for the rest of the evening, including hits from the Beatles and other 60’s hits. The final weekend of the festival sees a delightful oboe recital from Julia White and Andrea Kmecova, performing well-known film score melodies on Friday 15th at 7:30 at St Paul’s Church, raising money for its Organ Fund. Again at Off The Cuff at 8pm, the festival welcomes Hotmotel, offering a selection of upbeat original indie-rock songs perfect for an atmospheric Friday evening. Raising money for Norwood and Brixton Foodbank, Opal Flutes, a local mixed-ability flute choir brings you Coffee Morning Music at Herne Hill United Church on Saturday 16th at 11am. Expect to hear a range of familiar tunes ranging from classical, to pop and more! Later at 3pm, The

Festival is also again welcoming 4 local amatuer choirs to perform in Herne Hill Sings On at St Faith’s Church who would also be happy for your support. Your support would also be welcome in aid of local charity Herne Hill Welcomes Refugees, in whom cover band Talking Strawberries will be performing at 7:30pm at Off The Cuff. Once more at Off The Cuff on Sunday 17th, young people are again invited to showcase their musical skills at the Junior Open Mic Concert at 11am. Come support the future musical talent emerging in the area! Also for the final day of the Festival, enjoy an afternoon in Ruskin Park with a performance from the Crystal Palace Brass Band at the park’s bandstand from 2pm. Meanwhile, back at Brockwell Park’s Community Greenhouse at 3:30pm, Greenhouse Folk - Fran & Mike, the duo will be performing an uplifting acoustic vocal and guitar set of Country and Blues music, where a high turnout is expected. Finally, the festival is delighted to be concluding with the very talented Southwark Sinfonietta at 7pm at St Faith’s Church, performing a mighty programme including Beethoven’s Epic Piano Concerto no. 5 (“Emperor”) with Nadia Lasserson as soloist, and Mozart’s 36th Symphony in C, “Linz”. Originally planned for 2020, but delayed due to Covid-19, the challenges in this play epitomise much of the last year and the struggles we have faced as a theatre group. The title refers to its characters, who exhibit the delicate characteristics of magnolias, but are often called upon to be as tough as steel. Steel Magnolias charts a path though the life of Shelby Eaterton, from her wedding day to less happier events. It takes place within the walls of Truvy’s hair and beauty emporium in the American deep south – what better place to throw shade on everyone in the local community and further. The Last Word – Zoë Miller What is your favourite place to eat? This is a real tough one. I’m a MASSIVE foodie and have a lot of local faves. Nothing beats the legendary Mr Hassan’s Indian curries at Tandoori Nights, especially the staple Tadkha Dal, also got to love a weekend veggie fry-up or carrot cake with Earl Grey at the Blue Brick Café, an on-the-go roti wrap from the Cheese Block, a blow-your-socks off Som Tum from Kao Sarn, Patatas Bravas at Miss Tapas, masala beans on toast at Oru and a mushroom tagliatelle at the atmospheric Il Giardino… I could go on…

The best kept secret... The cat pens in the carpark off Choumert Grove. My name is Zoë, 24, I was born in Bangkok, Thailand, raised from the age of two in East Dulwich by Peckham Rye and, at the end of May, I launched my business making 100% plastic-free, harsh chemical-free, reusable, home-compostable period pads made from organic, unbleached and undyed cotton and blends of waste plant fibre fabrics and dyed with natural, plant-based dyes.

What do you most value about the street? The smoothness and incline of the actual physical street provided me with many years of excellent roller-blading terrain.

The one thing you couldn’t do without? My second-hand Peugeot bicycle with lever gears and red handlebars. We’re best of friends, she’s called Daisy.

Do you know your neighbours? Yes, I feel very lucky to be able to say this, as in London, it is so often not the case. But, here on Upland, we have a little community that has formed over more than two decades through Christmas parties, Royal wedding picnics, lockdown sociallydistanced front garden concerts, babysitting, cat feeding, onion-lending, plant-sharing… At Goodrich School we always used to have a carnival around the streets in summer which brought everyone together too. I recently got Covid and, first day into isolation, my next-door neighbours were hurling my favourite chocolate bar at me from the front gate!

Where’s your favourite place to walk? Either the Sexby Rose Garden in Peckham Rye Park or One Tree Hill right up to the bandstand. I watched the millennium come in from there, there’s an incredible view of London from up on top.

What is your favourite shop? Locally, the tiny treasure: Melange Chocolate run by the lovely French Isabelle; you can find such beautiful combinations of flavoured chocolate bars and truffles or sit in for a warming mug of hot chocolate in winter. And there’s a cat. Also, the Fresh Flower Company and Chichirara Vintage shop. They all bring me a lot of joy. Heather at Chichirara has an incredible eye for unique pieces. When I was about four I attempted to sneak out her door in a long silk blue skirt I’d taken a liking to.

The book I’m reading at the moment.. I’m an incredibly slow reader so I do a mix of physical books and audio versions. I’m about halfway through listening to Emma Barnett’s “Period. It’s About Bloody Time,” which is absolutely bloody brilliant and mind-opening. It’s about tackling period shame, stigma and taboos. And I’m nearly finished reading the physical book of “The Poisonwood Bible” by Barbara Kingsolver. Also utterly fantastic in a very different way. I judge fiction on how vividly I can paint the scene in my mind’s eye and how long that image stays with me and Kingsolver’s descriptions are second-to-none. Almost as good as “The God of Small Things” by Arundhati Roy.

Your favourite place for a night out? Well, can’t say I’ve done this for a while but back in the pre-pandemic day, I could often be found until the early hours of the morning at a South London Soul Train night at Bussey Building. 40 | SE22 - October 2021
