The Last Word – Sally Smy What do you most value about the area? The sense of community. When I first lived here I left early in the morning and came back when it was dark, I rarely spoke to or saw any of my neighbours. Since I have had my children and started my own business I have met so many lovely people and made lots of new friends.
Do you belong to any groups? I go to 'Cooking With Scissor's and 'Mums in Business' networking meetings as often as I can. They have been a valuable source of local information and a great way to chat to other business owners.
Describe your perfect weekend Once the children are ferried off to clubs I like to jog through Peckham Rye and Dulwich Park. I'd then have a hog roast sandwich from North Cross Market and take the kids to the park to play. I'd finish the day by having a meal with friends and family with a glass of Bruno's rose, preferably in the garden.
What is your favourite place to eat? I think I need to do some more research but my current favourite is Yama Momo. I love the Begging Bowl and Pedlar too. Sally Smy, is the founder of Queen Bee Styling. After the birth of her two children, Sally left an 18 year career as a fashion buyer to utilise her experience and skills as a personal stylist. She is a recommended by Parenting for Professionals, Women Returners and Partner of Capability Jane with whom she presents a regular webinar. Sally is a speaker at many women's networks and writes a monthly blog which can be found on Dulwich on View and her website. She also runs local events, including the Connect, Collaborate and Inspire workshop to be held at The Florence, Herne Hill on Friday 14th October at 10am.
How long have you lived in the area? 12 years in ED and South London all my life. I spent most of my childhood in Walworth and Borough before taking the huge step of moving 4 miles further south to ED.
What has changed most during that time? Lordship Lane. I love the amazing selection of places we have now to eat and drink. I remember coming to Lordship Lane as a child and it wasn't the sort of place you wanted to hang around for long. Seeing how vibrant and full of life it is now means I rarely want to go elsewhere.
Coffee or tea? Where? Coffee in Jade
The best kept secret... Bloomers lingerie shop - I recommend it to all my local clients and they are always impressed with the service.
Your favourite place to go for a drink? Franklins, I used to go there even before I moved to ED. They do a mean Espresso Martini!
What is your favourite shop? William Rose. I go there every week and they never let me down.
The book I’m reading at the moment.. Blood Beneath the Skin, The Alexander McQueen biography.
My secret ambition.. A law banning adults from wearing Crocs, Uggs and fleeces! W: www.queenbeestyling.com T: @Queenbeestyling F: www.facebook.com/queenbeestyling

September News By Sarah Pylas
W
ith children all over Dulwich heading back to school this week, parents from East to West to the Village are shopping for shoes, stocking up on packed lunch supplies and frantically hunting down longforgotten book bags. Whether you love them or grit your teeth to get through them, the end of the school holidays can be bittersweet. While many of us are sad to say goodbye to the carefree nature of long summer days, there can be something quite exciting about the start of a new school year. Although, it always takes a bit of time to settle back into the new (old) routine. How I used to get us both out of the house fed, washed and dressed by 8.30am is by now a distant memory. I can no longer remember how to persuade a 7-year old out of bed, into his clothes or away from the TV, and it all feels like a bit of a scramble. The peace that immediately follows the first school run feels like a spa day in comparison. However, the pile of laundry that has taken hostage over our spare bedroom is quick to remind me that I will not be spending the day under a hot stone massage. Luckily, September is often when I am at my most organised and so the house is tidied, washing folded AND put away, suitcases retired to the loft. and the fridge cleaned and ready to be stocked with real food. The opening of a new M&S Food Hall on Lordship Lane this week was a welcome addition to our high street. I wouldn’t shop in there every day, but I am a big fan of their picnic hamper fillers and generous gluten free range. My husband is also quite partial to M&S gin in a tin… I was so sad to hear of Si Mangia’s departure from Forest Hill Road after being acquired by Lorenzo
restaurant. Regular readers of this page will know that Si Mangia was a firm family favourite of ours, but we do look forward to seeing what delights the new owners have to offer when they re-open their doors. Also under new management is the Turkish restaurant, Hisar. I grabbed a quick bite there with a friend recently and the food was delicious. The waiters were lovely too. But, enough about me and what I have been up to. There’s plenty more to do this month in and around Dulwich. The traditional Peckham Rye Fete returns this Saturday with sack races, a Punch & Judy show, coconut shy and children’s fancy dress competition. And, if you didn’t make it to The Luna Cinema in Dulwich Park over the summer, there is still a chance to catch an outdoor film at Brockwell Lido - Titanic is showing on 22nd September and Jaws on 29th. If that is not enough to stop you day dreaming about sun soaked days by the sea, then nothing will! You can find details of all local news, events, and ticket information over on our website. You can also find us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter @arounddulwich.

Hectic Host
Chin-chin!
T
he 18th century Gin Craze took hold in a big way, the average Londoner drank 14 gallons a year and London had 7000 establishments selling the stuff. In the slums and unsanitary conditions gin was safer to drink than water and people readily got hooked. The widespread disorder caused by the problem eventually resulted in the 1751 Gin Act which effectively introduced licensing laws in to Britain. There is a second Gin Craze sweeping London, but this time things are a little more rarified; the rise of small batch distilleries and the increased interest in special botanicals have resonated with drinkers looking for a product with provenance. The usual way to make gin is to distill natural botanicals, such as juniper, coriander, citrus peel, cinnamon, etc. with neutral grain alcohol. The skill comes with knowing how to balance the botanicals to deliver the best possible fragrant flavour. Over on this month’s shopping page we identify 14 London gin distilleries – the term ‘London’ means ‘dry’; not where it is made – and here are some ideas of how to serve them up, besides the unbeatable G&T, of course. To my mind nothing beats a Martini and nothing is quicker or easier to make. Ask for a martini in any bar and you should get a cocktail that is around three parts gin and half-a-part vermouth. A dry martini refers to the amount of vermouth that is added, a very dry martini has virtually none, some bartenders go as far as rinsing the martini glass with the vermouth and pouring it away before adding the gin. Despite Mr. Bond’s glamorous request for his drink to be ‘shaken not stirred’ most mixologists will argue that gently stirring the gin with the vermouth in a cocktail shaker and then straining off the ice creates a better drink. A martini ‘straight up’ is without ice, otherwise it is served ‘on the rocks’ or ‘martini rocks’ as you will often hear in the movies, in which case a tumbler rather than a traditional martini glass is used. A martini should always be served with a twist of lemon, twisting the lemon releases the oils on to the surface of the

blend, and an olive. A ‘dirty martini’ includes a dash of the olive brine. A negroni could not be more simple, combine equal parts gins, vermouth and Campari in a glass and serve with a shave of orange peel. A gin rickey is a rather elegant drink that dates back to the 1890s. Squeeze lime juice into a highball glass, add ice and a measure of gin and top off with soda water. Another gin and lime drink is the gimlet, which comes in many variations. The most correct is thought to be four-parts gin and one-part Rose’s lime cordial. A French 75 is a blend of one-part gin to two-parts Champagne, lemon juice and sugar are sometimes added to the mix and the drink should be served with a shaving of lemon peel in a Champagne coupe. Fitness Tips
Exercise Myths Debunked
M
uscle weighs more than fat though doesn't it? This is a statement I hear a lot, and before I started my professional fitness career, I believed it to be true as well. It's one of the common exercise myths that still persists today so this month’s article focuses on debunking this and a few others....
Muscle weighs more than fat Muscle doesn't weigh more than fat - a pound is a pound! A pound of muscle will weigh the same as a pound of fat. The difference is in density. A pound of muscle is denser than a pound of fat, and therefore will appear smaller. It therefore follows that an 11 stone female with a lot of lean muscle mass will look significantly smaller and trimmer than an 11 stone female who has very little lean muscle mass and a large proportion of fat.
Women get bulky if they lift weights Women cannot develop significant muscle mass without the presence of testosterone, and we typically don't produce enough of it to do that. We need to forget this damaging (and limiting) belief, because lifting weights is actually very important for women. After the menopause, women stop producing so much oestrogen, which weakens our bones. Lifting weights (or any form of resistance training) strengthens the bones and reduces the risk of fractures.
that's 10 minutes plus, and you can use the floor at home, benches in the park, or the outdoor gym.
You need to carry water or a sports drink If you're going for a run of 60 minutes or less, you do not need to carry a water bottle with you. If you're exercising for 60-minutes or more, then by all means take on a small amount of water. You only need a sports drink if you're doing vigorous and demanding exercise for over 90 minutes. Even then, I would heavily dilute a sports drink with water, as the heavy dose of glucose that a sports drink provides can cause nausea, and simply isn't necessary for most recreational athletes.
Exercise alone will make you lose weight There are many benefits of exercise, and it can help to burn fat, but exercise alone will not make you lose weight. Weight loss - or more accurately, fat loss - will come mainly from diet and a balanced nutritional program. Changing your diet will create the body composition changes that many people crave, and exercise will add strength, agility, mental focus, increased energy, better sleep, improved cardiovascular health and reduced risk of serious disease.
You need a lot of time to fit in exercise I often hear about people who claim they don't have time to exercise, because they think they need at least an hour. That's simply not true. A 30-minute brisk walk is very effective especially if done daily, and can be combined with something else, i.e. a trip to the shops or your daily commute. A 15-minute Tabata workout is highly effective, and that includes warm-up and cool-down. Even a 2-mile run with some interval sprints thrown in only needs to take 30 minutes. Exercise can be fitted into any time slot 16 | SE22 - September 2016

Pets Corner
How to choose & buy a family puppy
A
number of you have asked me for advice on how best to choose a puppy or dog to be the family pet. While there can never be absolute guarantees there are a number of golden rules. Following these should help load the search in your favour and it is hoped that being well prepared you won’t be tempted to phone the nearest rescue centre as your dog approaches adolescence! Before reading the list it is a given you can afford to keep a dog and have factored in weekly food costs, veterinary bills, equipment and annual insurance. If you work full time consider whether it is fair to leave a highly social animal on its own for most of the day, dog walkers can be pricey. Dogs need daily exercise, training and play, consider how much time you want or are able to give to this aspect. Of course, a number of people badly want a dog but balk at the thought of a puppy. Let’s be honest, pups are very hard work, especially if you also have kids. Do think about an adult rescue; reputable rescue centres will be prepared to work hard to find the right dog for you. First and foremost, don’t rush in and buy the first cute puppy you see. Pups that are really easy to get hold of, no questions asked, are unlikely to be the product of a thoughtful, planned breeding. Puppy farming is still big business- so caveat emptor! Don’t be overly swayed by looks. Beautiful blue eyes or a ‘rare’ coat colour have little bearing on how good a family pet the puppy will make. If you are going for a pedigree do your homework and research the attributes of a range of breeds. Consider whether the description of the breed temperament, size, and exercise needs will fit you and your lifestyle. Consider attending the breed showcase Discover Dogs, in October at Excel, see http://www. discoverdogs.org.uk/. Whether pedigree, ‘designer cross’ or mixed breed, ensure you visit the breeder in their home before you commit. If your pup is to live in the city with you and your kids it is probably unwise to buy a pup that has been reared in a childless home, in a shed, in the countryside. It is probably best to avoid dogs bred from strong hunting or working lines. Working line dogs that are not worked can become easily bored and
20 | SE22 - September 2016
destructive. If you are looking at ‘designer crosses’ like labradoodles or cockapoos, ask if either parent is from working stock. Gregarious breeds will probably fare better in busy urban parks, where they are happy to meet people and other dogs. One person breeds, aloof breeds and dogs with a strong guarding instinct, will be hard to keep in an urban setting. Early handling by children and exposure to normal household noises, like hoovers and washing machines, is vital. City sounds, like sirens, are also important. Pups that are not exposed to these things early on may be fearful of them in later life. Insist you see the pup’s mum (dam) and also try to see the dad (sire) and check both for temperament and health. Dad is important for inherited temperament and the pups will learn much from their mother’s behaviour in early development. Avoid buying pups from nervous, aggressive or ‘guardy’ parents. Look for the pup that is neither too shy or too pushy. Even if the pup is a crossbreed, ask for proof that DNA tests have been done on the parents for the relevant listed inherited diseases (look for the pedigree breeds in the cross). Remember, it is not a given that crossbreeds are healthier. Badly bred crossbreeds can inherit ‘bad’ genes from one or both parents. Expect any good breeder to really quiz you. They should not be in a hurry to sell you their precious pup. A good breeder will always ask for return of the pup should anything go wrong and will want to stay in touch. Dulwich Hamlet FC - News
Dulwich Hamlet Volunteer Drive
D
ulwich Hamlet started off this years Ryman League Premier Division campaign with a two all draw away to newly promoted AFC Sudbury in the Suffolk countryside. The league then switched to Champion Hill with back to back games against Enfield Town (16 August) and Leiston (20 August). Pre-season saw a mixed bag of results as Gavin Rose formulated his squad for the coming season. The final game, before the season proper, saw Dulwich finishing with a 2-1 win at long time rivals Tooting and Mitcham which went some way in helping heal some of the scars of last seasons London Cup semi final defeat. Crowds at Champion Hill have continued to grow at a rapid rate over the passed few seasons and a big part of this is due to the hard work of the clubs current team of volunteers that not only ensure that visitors have a great match day experience, but makes sure that they continue to keep coming back.
36 | SE22 - September 2016
This spike in attendances is beginning to challenge the clubs current volunteers and for a grassroots club like ours, volunteering is our heartbeat, without which our club couldn’t survive. So recently the clubs Football Committee, together with the Supporters Trust, have launched a campaign to recruit more volunteers. Therefore if you, or any other supporters you know, can either give a couple of hours whenever you’re available, or commit to regular sessions do get in touch with the Supporters Trust. Further details can be found here; http://dhst.org.uk/your-club-needs-you/ A full fixtures list for the 2016/17 season can be found at www.pitchero.com/clubs/dulwichhamlet.

Avian Forms
Until Sunday 9 October Artist Jane Edden is fascinated by the relationship between nature and culture, and the human desire to collect and categorise. In this small display, Edden explores the ways in which animals are collected and studied, drawing inspiration from the science of comparative anatomy and the folklore and myths involving winged flying humans that appear across cultures, to create beautiful and intriguing works that inhabit a space between avian and human. FREE.
Prehistoric Garden
Look back in time through the Prehistoric Garden, featuring ‘living fossils’ – plant and tree species which date back to the time of the dinosaurs. A redwood and a yew tree tower above tree ferns, cycads and ginkgos and even an amazing Wollemi pine, thought to be extinct until 1994. The garden, at the highest point of the Horniman estate, is also home to a velociraptor sculpture, keeping a prehistoric watchful eye on the modern London skyline. The Prehistoric Garden was funded through Tesco’s Bags of Help campaign, and voted for by Tesco shoppers in the London Borough of Lewisham. FREE. Please go to www.horniman.ac.uk for information on our regular events and activities including the Horniman Farmers’ Market, Horniman Explorers, Art Makers, Discovery for All and Busy Bees.

Financial Matters
Is Cash Still King?
C
ash is king has been emblazoned in the financial language of businesses and households for many a year. However, over the past 18 months we have witnessed a decline of the importance of cash for investors. This is even taking to account the previous chancellor’s increases in the limits for savings in cash ISA and from April 2016 the tax free first £1,000 of savings interest for basic rate tax payers. The importance or attractiveness of holding cash has been in decline for years. Where’s the evidence cries the diehard cash holders? The evidence is, in recent years the returns to savers in cash ISAs has fallen by almost 50%. Cash ISAs has grown less flexible and their rates have fallen behind those of accounts with easier access and some taxable fixed rate bonds. To cap this all, since 2009, the UK economy has experienced almost a decade of historically low interest rates. However, the events of 4th August 2016, may be regarded as the final nail in the coffin for cash. The Bank of England reduced interest rates to 0.25% which is not the domestic returns for cash savers. The rates available to savers in risk free cash savings is less than 0.25%. Just when it could not get any worse, NatWest began to prime its current account customers with the warning that if interest rates fall below 0%, savers can expect bank charges for the safe keeping of their money. Furthermore, true to traditional banking culture as interest rates fall these are transferred to customers almost immediately. The same practice does not benefit savers when interest rates have increased as they used to in days before 2009. The banks may regard their behaviour as business practice or good fiduciary management, their savers may beg to differ. With interest rates falling to 0.25% the commercial bank lending rates, if these were reflected for cash savers, a basic rate tax payer would need to be holding some £400,000 in cash
40 | SE22 - September 2016
savings to take advantage of Mr Osborne’s £1,000 tax free gift. Since 4th August, discussions held with over 100 SE21/SE22 cash savers, there has not been a single cash saver with a fraction of £400,000 in a cash ISA or other cash savings. It does beg the question, how many of our SE21/ SE22 basic rate taxpayers can take full advantage of this £1,000 tax free interest on their savings. If cash savings are no longer a source of a modest return for savings, perhaps savers may have to be prepared to reflect upon their appetite for risk and consider indulging in investments. However, before making any financial decisions especially where there is an increase in risk requires savers to seek appropriate professional advice and should not attempt a do-it-yourself strategy unless they are 100% confident that they are fully aware of the risks which they are exposing themselves to and those who depend upon them. Emerging options to replace cash saving vehicles as they fall into demise and loss of faith by savers are: UK equities and investment trusts according to discussions with both financial advisors and holders of cash savings. UK equities and investment trusts may be appropriate for former cash savers but it must be emphasised that these are not suitable for every saver or investor. Cash may no longer be king but holders of cash should be prudent and seek the best professional advice to safeguard their funds. The economy may return to yesteryear when cash was king and a safe haven for savers but until then all savers must continually review their cash holdings.

New School Year – Two New Schools!
I
’m very excited to report that two new schools open in East Dulwich in September for the new school year. The New Charter East Dulwich opens on a temporary site in Camberwell with children having the option of a special coach service to get there and back from its planned permanent site. The permanent site should open September 2018 on 2/3rds of the Dulwich Hospital site no longer required for NHS use – more on that later. The other school is the Harris East Dulwich Primary School moving into its permanent site. As local councilors we campaigned long and hard for both schools launching the campaign for the primary schools in 2011 and the secondary school campaign in 2013. So you can imagine how excited we are to see our dreams come true. Without these schools we would have a dire pupil places crisis.
Harris Primary School East Dulwich This school opened on a temporary site on Homestall Road two years ago. The permanent site is on the former East Dulwich Police station site. It’s a brand new school. It wont be entirely finished for September – it only needs to house reception and years 1 & 2 classes this September. The upper floor internal fitting will be completed as soon as possible without disrupting the school. So don’t be surprised that it isn’t entirely finished in September but it is expected to be fully completed before Christmas. Council officials have asked us to approve highway changes which after strong push-back are not long as draconian as originally proposed. But we still have more work to do on this to ensure restrictions are commensurate with what is truly needed for pupil safety.
Charter East Dulwich Secondary School The Planning Application has been submitted for the permanent school. I feel torn. Having launched the campaign for such a school. Worked so hard to persuade the council to reverse and U-turn from its original emphatic rejection of the idea. To acquiring the land through making the application for the 44 | SE22 - September 2016
land via the first ever to succeed Right to Challenge how land was being used by central government. I’m torn. The planning application is for all pupils to access the school via Jarvis Road a tiny tiny side street from Melbourne Grove. We want our pupils to feel special – not faced by a wall of wheelie rubbish bins, which is currently how Jarvis Road looks, when they go to school. 1,680 pupils accessing school via this road will cause traffic chaos for Melbourne Grove northern halve. We think local children should have a proper school entrance on East Dulwich Grove. Do you agree?
Slow Broadband? Today most residents expect to have the opportunity for superfast broadband. But I’ve had some complaints that East Dulwich has various places where residents can’t get BT Openreach or Virgin Media superfast broadband. I’m putting a dossier together about this issue. If you’ve had problems getting modern broadband services please get in touch ASAP.
Disabled Unemployment Two-thirds of disabled people are unemployed. As a result many live in poverty and we need to do all we an to ensure we remove all obstacles from disabled people working. So I was amazed to hear that Southwark Council refuses to put a disabled parking bay outside a business created and run by disabled woman who can’t walk far or without crutches. The council would be willing to create such a bay limited to four hours. How many business people can make a successful business the local council are making it so hard to get to and would only be allowed to run for a maximum of four hours per day. How stupid is that? We need these rules changed. James barber Councillor for East Dulwich 07900 227366 www.jamesbarber.org.uk |

Garden Talk
Ornamental Onions
I
wouldn’t be exaggerating if I said that EVERYBODY in the entire universe love Alliums. EVERY single client of mine, the wives at least, mention them on their wish list. It might be that they have no opinion on what plant goes in their new garden as long as they get some of the “purple pompoms, you know the round purple flowers”? Yes I know. The Alliums. The wonderful Alliums. Allium constitute a family of plants which counts over 500 species. They include ornamental onions, chives, garlic, and leeks and are closely related to the edible onion. Not only they look spectacular and will bring to life any border but they are easy to grow, will come back every summer for years and years to come, are very attractive to pollinators, they also make excellent cut flowers, some of them lasting up to 3 weeks in a vase. Why writing about them in September? you might wonder. Since they tend to flower in early Summer? Well because if you have missed up on them this summer and you really want some to punctuate your garden in 2015, you’ll need to buy bulbs now ready to be planted in early Autumn, which is…now. Alliums thrive in a sheltered, sunny, open, well-drained site. They do not like cold, exposed or waterlogged conditions. Bulbs should be planted at a depth of about four times the diameter of the bulb. Plant smaller growing alliums 8-10cm (3-4in) apart, taller species need at least 20cm (8in) between the bulbs.
Ten favourite Alliums Allium hollandicum “Purple Sensation” - They are a must. They start flowering mid-May so are a must for the early summer garden. Allium nigrum - These ones bear white flowers in June and are very elegant. Allium Christophii - Their seedheads look magnificent, leave them on for a month or so or bring into the house. Cutback before they set seeds if you don’t want them to self seed everywhere. Allium Sphaerocephalon - They are later-flowering than most so I plant them in all my gardens in order to prolong the “Allium effect”. 46 | SE22 - September 2016
Allium Globemaster - They are enormous with flower heads up to 15 cms and will make a bold statement in your garden. Nectaroscordum sicilum or Sicilian Honey garlic is a very close relative to Alliums. It’s a spectacular and intriguing plant which tolerates light shade. Allium Cowanii - A very delicate and pretty, earlyflowering, pure white allium, smaller than her siblings. You can eat the flowers in salad. Allium “Mount Everest’ - Beautifull fluffy pom poms but white as you probably gathered. Allium atropurpureum - bear the darkest flowers and are shape more like an half sphere than a pom pom. Allium schoneprasum or chives - They produce small and very pretty flowers. You will have to make a choice though: whether you grow them for their flowers or for their edible leaves. They are perfect to edge a vegetable bed. The only problem with Alliums is that their leaves fade and start looking tatty just before the flowers come out, so always plant Alliums behind some medium height perennials or grasse. This way you will disguise the ugly leaves and let the flowers fill everyone with wonder.

48 | SE22 - September 2016
