Peckham Rye & Dulwich Park Parkrun

Saturday Mornings 9am 2, 9, 16, 23 & 30 September

Saturday 2 September: Peckham Rye Fete 12.00-5.00pm. An annual event organised by the Friends of Peckham Rye Park this is a wonderful day, bringing together people of all ages from around the area. There are lots of fun activities: sack races, Punch and Judy show, coconut shy and a children’s fancy dress competition. At the dog show prizes are awarded for categories unknown at Crufts. The Friends run stalls where you can buy delicious cakes, tea, beer, Pimms, books, plants and find out how the Friends support Peckham Rye Park and Common. Other stalls are run by community groups, local businesses and entrepreneurs selling a variety of craft works, clothes, bric-a-brac, delicious food and lots more. All the funds raised are used to support projects within the Park and Common. The Friends welcome volunteers to help organise the fete and help on the day. Don’t be shy (unless you are a coconut) and come and volunteer your help to make it a great day. Donations of cakes, books and plants are all welcome.

Get into grasses

rnamental grasses are at their best now. Their faded buttery seedheads look wonderful swaying amongst late summer perennials, purple asters, pink anemones, and yellow helenium. Most like sun and free draining soil (though some are fine in shade) and look amazing in big drifts. But they also work well dotted around smaller gardens linking plants and adding a naturalism, movement and texture to planting. They don’t need feeding or watering when established and add autumn and winter interest. Here are some to try:

Miscanthus Miscanthus sinensis ‘Ferner Osten’ is a popular variety of this striking statement grass with arching leaves and a fountain of burgundy pink flowers in August. Great for late season interest with its coppery autumn leaves. (1.6 m). Starlight is a smaller version. Miscanthus sinensis ‘Kleine Silberspinne’ is more compact at 1.2m with burgundy plumes fading to a shimmery silver, so nice where it catches the winter light. It looking great with Anemone x hybrida ‘September Charm.’ Miscanthus sinensis ‘Morning Light’. A delicate variety that rarely flowers but is grown for the fine cream edged leaves that flatter silvery plants, deep red sedums or dark purples such as Penstemon ‘Raven’.

Stipa Stipa tenuissima is a small compact grass with soft feathery seedheads in summer. Good mingling with (but not overcrowded by) perennials such as salvia nemerosa ‘Caradonna’. Likes full sun and welldrained soil. Comb out tatty bits or cut right down in spring for a fresh flush of green. Stipa gigantieum. This is another statement grass, best in an open spot where the sun can shine through the tall oaty seedheads turning them golden. Takes a while but can get big (2.5m).Needs full sun and good drainage. Anemanthele lessioniana, (previously Stipa arundinacea) is a very useful mid height evergreen grass that is shade tolerant and turns orange and red in autumn and winter. Self seeds, so pull up unwanted baby plants. 12 | SE22 - September Janine2017 Winlaw

Calamagrostis Calamacutifolia x acutiflora ‘Karl Foerster’. This is a fab grass with a very upright habit. Fresh green spring leaves turn to fluffy purple flowers and finally long straw-coloured seedheads in summer that sway on their tall stems and looks amazing with pinky purple Verbena bonariensis flowers. (1.8m). Likes sun or part shade. Calamagrostis brachytricha has similar pale fluffy flower heads turning straw coloured but with a more relaxed arching habit. (1m). Best in full sun as it flops more in shade. Calamagrostis x acutiflora ‘Overdam’ is a pretty, smaller, (1.2m), version of Karl Foerster with a similar upright habit and cream-striped leaves. Likes sun or part-shade.

Others Deschampsia cespitosa ‘Goldtau’ is a smaller mound forming evergreen grass with tiny silvery purple flowers in the summer, maturing to a cloud of delicate golden seedheads. Sun or part shade, moist but well drained soil. (75m) Molinia caerulea subsp. arundinacea. Good for wetter soils with delicate flower heads and lovely autumn colour, ideal for viewing other plants through. (1.5m) Pennisetum alopecuroides ‘Hameln’. A good variety of this pretty grass with pink fluffy rabbit tail flowers throughout the summer months. Looks good with purple perennials and pink sedums. Full sun, well drained soil. (61-90cm)

Grass Care Cut deciduous grasses right back in late winter, before the new growth appears. Remove seedsheads from evergreen varieties and comb out any tatty bits.

Food & Drink with Suzanne James Crunchy Fruit & Oat Crumble As we head into September there are plenty of locally grown apples, pears, plums & soft fruits available. Our temperate climate gives them a great depth of flavour and they make wonderful crumbles, one of the most heartwarming, cosy of puddings; for me they really do herald the arrival of Autumn. Crumbles are so easy to make and can be easily adapted so do have a go a making some this year. Serves 4 - 15 minutes preparation time, 15-20 minutes cooking time

Ingredients • 2-3 slices of bread (100g/3oz), crumbed (stale is fine) • 50g (2oz) rolled oats (or muesli or granola) • 1 tablespoon sunflower seeds (or sliced almonds) • 400g (14oz) any fruit (e.g. 2 apples plus berries) • 100ml (3fl oz) fruit juice (we use apple juice, but if you don’t have any fruit juice use a couple of teaspoons of jam or marmalade dissolved into 100ml (3fl oz) boiling water) • 2 tablespoons of runny honey

Add crumbed bread, oats and seeds/nuts to a bowl and mix well. Chop the unpeeled, cored apples & put into an ovenproof dish with the berries and fruit juice. Sprinkle the crumb mixture on top then drizzle with honey. Bake in a preheated oven 1800C/Gas 6/3500F for 15-20 minutes until golden brown. Serve immediately with a little greek yoghurt, custard or cream or for real decadence serve with a Crème Anglaise.

My Favourite Carrot Cake I have discovered a really brilliant carrot cake recipe recently, which I just have to share with you as it is incredibly easy and truly delicious! I hope you will agree that cake is always good, no matter what month it is!

Beat the eggs, sugar and oil together. Sift in the flour, spice and bicarbonate of soda. Fold in the orange zest and the grated carrot. Bake in a loaf tin for approximately 50 minutes at 1500C. While the cake cooks make the syrup by mixing together the orange juice & caster sugar. Turn the cake out of the tin onto a cooling rack and drizzle the syrup over the top.

Why cold showers are good for your health Five reasons why cold showers are good for your health (and keep you cool during a heatwave) I was persuaded to try cold showers having listened to a podcast where the guest, (the renowned Dr Joseph Mercola) was discussing their benefits, specifically, cold thermogenesis. It seemed to me that the benefits of subjecting yourself to cold temperatures were too many and too compelling to ignore. Here are my top 5 reasons why cold showers are good for your health, and why you should start experimenting with cold therapy now.

1) Brown fat activation Brown adipose tissue (BAT) is a type of fat that is typically found around the collar bones, sternum, neck and upper back. It’s a unique type of fat that generates heat by burning the white fat on the stomach, rump, hips and legs. One study found that cold therapy increases the activation of BAT by up to 15 times. Individuals who are frequently exposed to bouts of cold temperatures tend to have more BAT, which can also cause metabolic up-regulation and an increased production of heat in skeletal muscle, which means you’ll be burning more calories as you go about your daily business.

2) Improved immune function Cold exposure can increase your levels of immune system cells that fight disease and infection. Researchers believe that shivering, or just subjecting the body to cold, increases the body’s metabolic rate and that has the effect of activating the immune system. Cold exposure has also been found to increase testosterone, which has an energy-boosting effect for both men and women.

3) Improved mood and increased resilience

impulses are sent to the brain via the peripheral nervous system which causes a boost in mood (according to a 2007 study). You’ll become more resilient because you will be used to putting your body under a form or stress, and learning to endure it. Mentally, you’ll be tougher.

4) Improves recovery from exercise sessions Moving between hot and cold water for 30 seconds each for the duration of your shower has the effect of contracting and expanding the blood vessels which helps to pump out inflammation. This means potentially less inflammation, reduced effect of DOMS (delayed onset of muscle soreness) and faster recovery.

5) Stimulates the vagus nerve The vagus nerve is part of the parasympathetic nervous system and part of the autonomic nervous system state responsible for the rest and digests functions. The vagus nerve literally affects every part of the body and has an impact on our mental health. Stimulating the vagus nerve with cold water is an easy and effective way to wake up these organs. If you’re tempted by cold exposure therapy, here are a few suggestions on how you can go about it: • Start by having a glass of cold water in the mornings • Next, start your day by splashing cold water on your face • Next time you take a shower, turn the tap on cold for the last 30 seconds • Now graduate to alternating between hot and cold for 30 seconds each • Gradually increase the amount of cold over hot • Step into a hot shower but immediately turn on the cold • The full-on 5 minute cold shower

ello September, where did you come from?! It feels like only a few weeks ago we were ringing in 2017 and I haven’t even made a start on my New Year resolutions yet! Although, in many ways - especially with a new school year almost upon us - September is usually a better time to get organised and the clean, crisp pages of my school year diary offer 52-weeks of opportunity! As I note important dates down in my neatest handwriting, I even optimistically schedule the time to exercise and attend my weekly Slimming World group. After a long summer of excess, I always welcome September and the clean slate it tends to bring. The weather was a bit of a mixed bag in August and while we had the occasional day of glorious sunshine, it felt quite autumnal for most of the month. However, if it’s tropical temperatures on your doorstep that you are after, then head over to the new butterfly house at the Horniman Museum and Gardens. This speciallyplanted habitat is the perfect place to experience butterflies free-flying all around you and to discover amazing facts about the life-cycle and behaviour of these fascinating creatures. Village Books are hosting an array of very exciting events this month, including an evening with Judy Murray, mother of tennis champions Jamie and Andy Murray, Scottish National Coach and coach of the Fed Cup. From the soggy community courts of Dunblane to the white heat of Centre Court at Wimbledon, Judy Murray’s extraordinary memoir ‘Knowing the Score’ charts the challenges she has faced, from desperate finances and growing pains to entrenched sexism. The other event that caught my eye is Yotam Ottolenghi in conversation with a long-time friend and co-author of ‘Sweet’, Helen Goh. Sweet is a return to Yotam’s roots as a pastry chef and offers mouthwatering recipes for handcrafted sweet treats, freshly made with love, flair, real ingredients and lots of attention to detail. Yotam and Helen will also be assembling a pudding from Sweet and at the end, this will be auctioned for charity! Meanwhile, my husband, having just read Conclave on holiday in Greece this summer, is

particularly interested in attending Village Book’s October event An Evening with Robert Harris. The annual Peckham Rye Fete organised by the Friends of Peckham Rye Park returns on 2nd September. Fans of the Dulwich Outdoor Gallery may be interested in a guided walk from East Dulwich to Dulwich Picture Gallery on 24th September. News from the Supporters’ Trust

round 4 months have passed since another play off final defeat but Gavin Rose and his team have been busy signing up most last season’s squad and adding a couple of useful additions in defence. Pre-season saw a mixed set of results but finished very strongly with a 5-1 away win at ex-Dulwich Hamlet favourite Peter Adeniyi’s Carshalton Athletic team. Since the end of last season, the Supporters’ Trust have also been busy with the launch of our new online shop, running stalls at local fairs and of course, holding our AGM and electing four new members of the Supporters' Trust Board. Last season saw an impressive rise in the recruitment of volunteers to help the Club run smoothly on match days and we hope to improve on that again this season. Without volunteers giving up their own time to help the Club, it wouldn’t run as well as it does and, to give you some idea of the time that volunteers put in for the Club, the Trust Board members alone put in over 1000 hours (over 6 months full time work) of their own time. When you add that to the time that the Football Committee and other volunteers put in, it really does hit home just how reliant we are on volunteers to compliment the small number of paid employees at the Club. The late-Millennials financial resilience

ast month marked the 10th anniversary of what began as a credit crunch but soon evolved into the global financial crisis. For many households life has never been the same again. However, for one sector of the economy there is fear that if another financial crisis should occur they may not be able to withstand its impact. The group considered to be least financially resilient is not today’s pensioners but the late-Millennial generation (25 – 34 year olds). A recent report by London Victoria insurance company (LV=) highlighted that more than half (55%) of 25-34 year olds fall short of the Money Advice Service (MAS) recommended amount of savings to be financially resilient. Where resilience is defined as someone who has 90 days’ worth of outgoings in savings. The research found that only one-third of late-Millennials could survive for one month or less if they lost their income. These figures are even more pronounced for renters of this age, who made up almost half (45%) of the group. The LV= findings prompted an examination and review of the late-Millennials living and/ or working in SE21/22. Two-thirds of our lateMillennials were living in private rented accommodation. In addition, only one-third (33%) of the SE21/22 late-Millennials had three months of savings survival cash to see them through the loss of their current employment income. Notably none of the SE21/22 late-Millennials had any form of income protection insurance in place as a safeguard against a loss of income. The group offered a mixture of survival strategies to cope with a loss in their current income. Susan a local administrator living in private rented accommodation approach said, “I’d find another job as soon as possible and seek help from the Council.” Although the LV= research termed the lateMillennials renting as ‘Generation Debt’ because 43% were unable to save any money at all. Only 33% of SE21/22 late-Millennials were unable to save. This was against a backdrop where rent was consuming over 50% of their monthly salary. However, “saving for a deposit to obtain a mortgage and saving a decent and regular amount each month,” were echoed as their greatest personal challenges in 2017. Some of the SE21/22 cohort were optimistic about surviving a financial crisis. Such confidence was echoed by Massing a local trainee accountant; “I have never experienced a financial crisis. However, were a financial crisis to materialise I would have to scale back on expenses. I would prioritise price over quality or brand when shopping.” Conversely, Susan provided a counter balance probably more in tune with many others; “I do not make enough money to make it to the end of the month let alone deal with a crisis.” To tackle financial insecurity in the UK, particularly among older Millennials who rent, LV= is calling on the Government to ensure that the new Single Financial Guidance Body (SFGB) due to replace MAS has a specific remit to focus on increasing financial resilience among consumers. Despite the financial resilience dilemma, the SE21/22 late-Millennials shared five techniques for individuals to take control of their finances: 1) Online banking 2) Keep a spreadsheet of monthly outgoings 3) Moving money for rent and bills into a separate account 4) Strict control over expenses 5) No borrowing. A new financial crisis today may not catch SE21/22 late-Millennials off guard as it possibly did for others a decade ago. Time will tell!

Pet Poo Problems

t first glance this might seem an odd choice for an article, however many dogs and cat owners are all too aware that pet poo is becoming a major issue and the focus of many a rant, both on and offline. So much so that some would like to see an end to dog and cat ownership or, at the very least, draconian measures against dogs and owners around public footpaths and green spaces. Perhaps it is time for all pet owners to unite to control the poo problem, before it controls us. I am sure that like me, most of you dog owners religiously ‘pick up’, never venturing forth without the obligatory bag. Sadly, however, there are those who are not so fastidious, and we have all seen owners that suddenly become fixated on their mobile phone or some other urgent business, just as their pooch begins to circle and squat. If witnessed, perhaps a polite reminder and gently proffered bag may prompt said owner to do the decent thing. It might even be time for all dog owners to try to pick up one extra of whatever they see lying around, whether from their own dog or not. There are various laws that enable councils to penalise dog poo offences but cats are much more difficult to ‘police’. Although cats have freedom to roam in law, the popularity of felines as pets combined with increasingly dense urban living, means objections to cat poo are also on the up. Most cats prefer to toilet a little away from their core territory. Outdoor cats will often want to bury poo at the edges of their territory (on average 300 yards from home) and that could mean your neighbour’s garden. Discovering poo while gardening is unpleasant, especially so if the cat has diarrhoea. Cat owners should try to ensure outdoor cats are encouraged to toilet in their own garden- a patch of freshly dug soil, as far from the house as possible and cleaned up on a regular basis, should help encourage your cat to defecate closer to home. Healthy pets produce firm, compact stools and should not need to go three or four times a

day. Compact stools are easier and less stomach churning to pick up and dispose of. If your pet has loose, large, or overly smelly stools, then it might be wise to visit the vet for a health check and review of diet. Your pet is unlikely to benefit much from food that is passing straight through him and bowel habit is a useful barometer of health and appropriate diet. It is also worth remembering that pet poo is not only anti-social there are also significant associated health risks. Most pet dogs are treated for worms and parasites, but not all. Dog poo can contain roundworm larvae, a parasite that can cause blindness, especially in children. Cat poo if anything is worse; it carries the embryonic form of a parasite responsible for Toxoplasmosis, with particular risks for expectant mothers and the unborn child. Overall the message to outdoor cat owners is ensure you provide a suitable toileting space in your own garden or home and clean up every few days. City dog owners should practice vigilance, bagging and binning. Dog owners can also teach their pet to defecate on command at the right time in an appropriate place. Dogs for the blind are taught to do this from puppyhood and perhaps this practice should be part of all basic puppy training. As a final thought, there is some evidence that with the right equipment cat poo can be hot composted and dog poo used in a wormery. Neither should ever be used to fertilise edible plants. Decorating Ideas for a Teenager’s Bedroom

here comes a time in every growing family when a sibling utters the request: “I want a room of my own”, their shorthand for: “I want to create a space that reflects my own personality and values, unrestrained by those of my parents”. When this happens the daunting question is do you give them free rein to do as they wish or negotiate a reasonable compromise that retains some degree of decorum? Remember your own adolescence. It’s likely your parents consented to certain freedoms where they no longer governed your decisions. Allowing teenagers the freedom to create their own space can encourage them to develop independent thought, express their emerging attitudes, interests, hobbies and habits to express their individuality and accept responsibility for taking care of themselves. My advice is to encourage their involvement in the designing of the room, ask them to create their own mood board of what they would like, a visual statement of their individuality and values – To help them suggest they use these basic elements to structure their thoughts – Clutter / Colour / Texture / Lighting / Sound / Personal Items / Plants and Scents. Remember the room is likely to serve a multitude of functions and purposes, apart from a place to sleep. It should be somewhere to study, a place to chill out away from the family, an entertainment area, a private space to socialize with friends. Start by listing the functional requirements of the space; the basic essentials - the bed and bedding, storage for clothes and shoes, a space for work or play, and somewhere to display collections, posters and paraphernalia. Ensure there are enough power points for their entertainment and tech gear to avoid overloading the ring main circuit with numerous extension leads. Redecorating a teenager’s bedroom also provides a great opportunity to clear some of the years of accumulated clutter hoarded from their childhood. Sorting out such junk can help clarify teenager’s thoughts on the persona they wish to project and focus on their current interests.

Encourage their views on colour schemes, styling and décor ideas. Try avoiding stereotypical pinks and blues; monochrome colour palettes can work well, allowing for them to add feature points of their own choice. Helping young adults to gain the basic knowledge of decorating and how to create a personal space or sanctuary can be an important lesson in later life. The difficulty in designing any room for an adolescent is that their interests, ideas and values can change so quickly. Ask them to think about their future interest and how they could adapt the design features they choose to reflect their changes in attitudes. An easy way to accommodate such changes is to create a chalk or scribble wall, or pin board wall, where they can express themselves with writing, drawing, pictures or pinning-up bits or photos that interest them. Now the negotiation can begin; what existing furniture items have to be retained, can they be painted? What new items can they purchase? Set them a budget for what they can buy and stick to it, this will help them prioritize what items are most important for them. Good Luck!

Establishing Positive Habits

t is the right time of year for you and your children to establish positive habits, says Simon Severino, Headmaster at Alleyn’s Junior School. September has come around again; the nights will begin to draw in, and the cycle of the school year begins afresh. Whether your child is new to school or moving up through the age groups (Year 5 already – how did that happen?), now is the perfect time to consider how to introduce or refine positive habits before the daily schedule glides into autopilot.

A relaxed start is a positive start A consistent routine is a great help, and preparation is key. Activities such as packing school bags the evening before can help the morning run smoothly. Ensuring your child arrives on time to school, without rushing, provides a relaxed start that can have a very positive knockon impact for the rest of the day.

Establish a precedent for homework Encourage your children to write down their homework as accurately as possible, and do check their homework/contact books every day. Keeping track helps to avoid last minute panic for both parents and children. Allocating a specific time and space for doing homework establishes a good precedent and helps focus. If possible the space should be relatively quiet and free from electronic distractions, and it is helpful for an adult to be on hand to provide support where appropriate.

Have a good night of sleep Every child’s emotional make-up is different, but there are some simple actions that can help to support and build emotional capacity for everyone. A good night’s sleep is priceless for its positive impact on learning and behaviour. So is regular exercise, although it is equally important not to overschedule afterschool and out-of-school activities. A sensible diet and regular mealtimes are also hugely beneficial to help regulate moods. 46 | SE22 - September 2017

Happy boys and girls make happy pupils To help your child take charge of their emotional needs, show them that it is healthy to talk about how they feel, and try to have regular chats with them about out of school topics as well as their school days, school friends and learning. Encourage them to talk to their teachers, too, and make sure they know who to see at school if they are worried about something. Happy boys and girls make happy pupils! September also heralds the start of Open Day season. Open events are a great opportunity for parents and children to get a feel for a school. What's On - September Saturday 23 September: Dulwich Park Fun Run The Dulwich Park Fun Run has been running for over 10 years and was organised by the families of children affected by Cystic Fibrosis. Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a genetic condition affecting more than 10,800 people in the UK. You are born with cystic fibrosis and cannot catch it later in life, but one in 25 of us carries the faulty gene that causes it, usually without even knowing. The Dulwich Park Fun Run has now developed in to a highly popular event, with something for everyone to get involved in! The 10km and 5km race which are 3 or 6 laps around the par depending on your distance and start at 10am. There is also a one mile fun run for kids and adults to take part in, and for those babies still in prams we have the buggy push race – starting at 12pm! Friday 6 – Sunday 15 October: Herne Hill Music Festival Plans for the next Music Festival are taking shape, and the programme offers local people the usual range of music from jazz, folk, and blues, to family and children’s concerts and classical music. Innovations this year range from Mozart’s Don Giovanni performed by Dulwich Opera Company, a family concert of Indian Classical music in Brockwell Hall as part of our Music in the Park on Sunday 9th Oct, to performances by rising Jazz stars at Off The Cuff, and Fiddling the Night Away with folk fiddlers at Canopy Beer. http://hernehillfestival.org.

The Last Word with Karen Wood & Kathy Daniel Where are you likely to be found on Saturday? Kathy will be playing badminton, Karen gardening then we’ll be either at an exhibition, a garden centre or a tea shop. Preferably all three.

What is your favourite place to eat? Yama Momo on Lordship Lane is amazing – for both food and cocktails…. Miss Tapas in Peckham is great and (after extensive research) Kathy swears the carrot cake from Gail’s in Dulwich village is the best there is.

Coffee or tea? Where? The French House is a great place for a coffee and an Earl Grey tea, but if you want a veggie breakfast on the side then Boulangerie Jade is hard to beat.

The best meal you’ve ever had.. We’re Karen Wood and Kathy Daniel, we live in East Dulwich from where we run our upholstery and furniture renovation company 'The Chair Sanctuary.'

How long have you lived in the area? Both of us have lived in East Dulwich for over 20 years, we’ve had workshops across south London during that time but we’re very pleased that for the last few years both work and home have been in East Dulwich.

What do you most value about the street you live in?

We love Eritrean food and ordered a huge takeaway for Kathy’s last birthday party from Adulis restaurant in Brixton and enjoyed the leftovers all weekend. Perhaps the most peculiar was when Karen inadvertently ordered snails in garlic and white wine alongside a cappuccino, she really should improve her German language skills….

Your favourite place for a night out? We love hanging out at our friends’ house locally, playing table tennis in the garden and eating curry - washed down with plenty of gin and tonic.

What is your favourite shop?

We live in a rather secret road, it’s a cul-de-sac with a really rural feel, full of trees and birds and loads of blackberries in the summer - our homemade jam cannot be beaten!

There are plenty to choose from but we love Really Maria on Lordship Lane which has a colourful array of dress making fabrics, useful haberdashery and lots of crafty bits and pieces.

Do you know your neighbours?

We live in a really creative corner and it’s the friendliest road we’ve ever lived in. We’re really lucky to know our neighbours one of whom knocked on our door to present us with a home grown marrow the day we moved in – and we knew we’d found the right spot for us.

We’re furniture and design fanatics so we always have a number of those on the go – Karen is always reading a classic, Kathy is finally getting round to A Suitable Boy and for comedy genius we love David Sedaris.

The most famous person you’ve met?

We love Africa and it’s hard to choose a favourite moment between sleeping under the stars on a house-boat on Lake Kariba, Zambia, admiring the incredible rock-hewn churches in Ethiopia or camping (a bit too closely!) to lions in the Maasai Mara.

We’re lucky enough to have a number of wellknown people as regular clients, including Mark Rylance and Claire van Kampen who have an amazing array of antique furniture which is always a treat to work on. 56 | SE22 - September 2017
