Local SE23 Group for Self-Employed Parents by Emily Jones

I

n August last year, SE23-based childminder, kinesiologist and mum of three Ella Carey posted a brief message on the SE23 Mums Facebook group. She wondered if there were any other self-employed parents in the local area who fancied getting together on a regular basis, to exchange ideas and offer each other support. Within hours she’d received dozens of replies - and just a few weeks later, the first gathering of local entrepreneurial mums and dads took place at the Honor Oak Pub. Now, eight months on, the group has been christened SELSEP (South East London Self-Employed Parents) and we meet on the first Saturday of every month at The Signal in Forest Hill. Our meetings usually feature a guest speaker - often another local self-employed parent - and recent topics have included branding, video marketing and small business accounting. But they also offer an opportunity to network, make friends, and share the ups and downs of running a business with other like-minded locals. The SELSEP Facebook group already boasts nearly 400 members, and is an active forum where questions are asked of the community and plenty of advice is given in return. There is also a separate advertising page, so that members can let each other know about their businesses. I'm mum to a toddler and also run a video production company, so it's often really tough trying to juggle work and family life. It's been great to be able to join a group where you can just talk honestly with other people who are in the same situation. It’s also been really useful to tap into SELSEP’s

Angela Angela Burgess: Editor SE Magazines Limited

collective wisdom, because there are members who’ve been running their own businesses for years. There are experts in everything from accountancy to photography - and everyone’s always generous with their advice. This month a new SELSEP website is being launched, offering information and resources - with the ultimate aim of providing every member with a searchable profile page, so that their business information can be easily shared. The group has also been developing connections with the London Small Business Centre, which offers free business support to Lewisham residents. We’re a really friendly group, so new members are always given a warm welcome. It's about as far away from an awkward networking event as you can imagine - plus you don’t have to travel far to get to it! SELSEP meets at The Signal pub opposite Forest Hill station, 10.30am-12pm on the first Saturday of every month.

Hectic Host

April Fool: The Easiest Dessert Ever, No Joke.

O

ver the years in this Hectic Host column we have shared many handy hacks on how to make entertaining just that little bit easier. From recipes that take minutes rather than hours, to how to get your home guest-ready and recover afterwards. When it comes to dinner parties the perennial problem for us all seems to be the pudding course. Perceived as tricky and hard to get right I am a great advocate of buying in. ‘Why try when you can buy?’ is my motto and who would dispute that, especially with all our wonderful local bakeries and patisseries? However one of our oldest national recipes happens to be one of our most simple; the fool is actually foolproof. The first written record of the word ‘foole’, associated with a dessert, appears in a 1598 dictionary 'Worlde of Wordes'; ‘a kinde of clouted creame called a foole’. It was in the sixteenth century, from what I can gather, almost a trifle; bread steeped in a fruit custard. Today recipes vary greatly from blends of custard with whipped double cream to cream and Greek yoghurt but to keep things concise nothing beats the nononsense ease of my one-part fruit compote, two-parts cream combination. A compote is essentially fruit stewed in water and sugar; nothing could be simpler you may think, however, my go-to dessert became even easier this weekend when I discovered the joys of Fruition handmade compotes at Herne Hill Market on Sunday. Instead of making my own, in a flash I can now add one of Fruition’s exceptional creations to bowls of whipped double cream. Seasonally there are many to choose from; rhubarb and orange; rhubarb and ginger; apple and lemon; plum and cinnamon; plum and vanilla; sweet cherry and gooseberry and elderflower. Made in Clapham from ingredients bought locally, I will never have to agonise over dessert again. A few tips here; when assembling I would

12 | SE23 - April 2016

advise putting your compote into your bowl or glass first, then spoon on your cream, gently lift some of the fruit up through the cream and make a very gentle half stir to get a satisfying swirl effect. Top with fine sprinkles of gated lemon zest and quite literally a few crystals of brown sugar. This dish does not sit well so you will have to make it just before you serve. Another regular to Herne Hill Market is Jan Pateman; whose locally hand-made, splendidly pleasing pottery espresso cups make the perfect receptacle for this rich delight. Another way to round of a meal is with a plate of delicious Dulwich-made guimauves by La Maison Guimauve. The French version of marshmallows; these are nothing like the bags of fluff that supermarkets sell. Soft, fresh and delicious, I was immediately hooked. You can buy, and you will be going back and buying again and again, online from lamaisonguimauve.com. I don’t think I have seen anything prettier than the cappuccino confections.

Method 1) Trim any excess fat from edges of salmon and set aside. 2) Weigh out your sugar and salt and mix together. 3) Finely chop dill and add to the salt mix, with the zest of 2 lemons. 4) Thoroughly mix all ingredients together. 5) In a container big enough to fit your salmon into, spread a layer of the marinade over the bottom about 1/2 an inch thick. 6) Lay the salmon onto the salt mix and gently press down. 7) Pour the rest of the salt mix over the salmon, ensuring it is completely covered around all edges. 8) Cover in cling film and place into the fridge for 72 hours. 9) After a few days, all the water will have been drawn out of the salmon and it will essentially "be cooked” and ready to be finely sliced. 10) We serve it with watercress, finely diced boiled new potatoes, capers and brown shrimp with a lemon vinaigrette. A nice variation of this is to mix a pureed beetroot into the salt and sugar mix to give the salmon an awesome deep purple ring. 14 | SE23 - April 2016

SELSEP

It’s also been really useful to tap into SELSEP’s

collective wisdom, because there are members who’ve been running their own businesses for years.

For more information see the SELSEP website www.selsep.co.uk or search for South East London Self Employed Parents on Facebook. 18 | SE23 - April 2016

Dulwich Festival 2016 | 6th - 15th May

Dulwich Festival 2016

T

his year’s Dulwich Festival delivers a tremendous calendar of art, music and cultural inspiration all squeezed into ten exhilarating days in May. The 23rd staging of the Festival - the annual celebration of the arts in Dulwich and the surrounding area - once again promises a wealth of cultural entertainment and stimulation for everyone, and takes place from 6th-15th May 2016. Doctor, comedian and health commentator Dr Phil Hammond will be bringing his ‘How to survive the NHS…and help the NHS survive’ show to Alleyn's Great Hall on 9th May. In this highly subversive comedy, Dr Phil calls for an end to top down disorganisation of the NHS, and launches his own 'bidet revolution' – from the bottom up. Later in the week, the 2015 Christmas number one holders - the Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Choir - will be headlining the Festival of Choirs at Holst Hall. The choir is made up of staff from across the NHS workforce - from doctors and nurses to porters and administrators. For drama lovers, there will be plays and performances for all ages. The internationallyacclaimed Tangram Theatre Company will bring their much-lauded performance, Albert Einstein: Relativitively Speaking to this year's Festival. Their collaborative, challenging and entertaining approach to theatre seeks to actively engage the

20 | SE23 - April 2016

audience, so be ready to join in! Garlic Theatre will enthrall a family audience with a magical display from their beautifully crafted shoe puppets in a funny, poetic and imaginative performance. In a first for the festival, Dulwich Park will play host to a piece of interactive outdoor theatre. When a schoolgirl needs help in solving the riddle of time travel, there’ll be clues for the audience to solve and a trail to follow, so oodles fun to be had when The Multiple Myrtle Mysteries land! This year’s music calendar promises a number of treats. A Scandinavian Soundaround will invite anyone who can play a scale on their instrument to bring it along for a collaborative workshop in Dulwich Picture Gallery. Places will be limited, so those interested are urged to buy their tickets in advance. Meanwhile, the Joglaresa Ensemble’s show Nuns and Roses will provide an insight into music from the Middle Ages to the 17th century, and Nedwardo and the Rumbanauts band will be

Dulwich Festival 2016 | 6th - 15th May taking up residence at The Grafton Dance Centre, playing some infectious music and encouraging us all to cast off our inhibitions and take to the floor. On Thursday May 12th, Belair House provides the perfect surroundings to relax into the rich harmonies and soothing rhythms of Gerard and the Watchmen. A truly memorable afternoon with two outstanding and critically-acclaimed musicians is in store when violinist Levon Chilingirian OBE and pianist Carole Presland perform a thrilling programme including pieces by Handel, Grieg and Elgar. Celebrating our strong cultural exchange with Europe, the recital will take place on Sunday 15th May in the Old Library, Dulwich College. To mark the 400th anniversary of Edward Alleyn establishing Christ's Chapel in Dulwich Village, a number of events will explore the beautiful building, its magnificent organ, the shared history of Alleyn and Shakespeare and the power of creating a legacy. Over 200 artists will once again be throwing open the doors of their studios and homes to offer us an insight into the artistic process for Artists' Open House which will take place across both weekends of the Festival. The Dulwich Outdoor Gallery will this year have a further addition by artist Louis Masai who will be live-painting an outdoor piece at local nature reserve, Sydenham Hill Wood. Festivalgoers will be able to watch the painting being brought to life beginning on Friday 13th May and continuing throughout the weekend. New to the always popular walks programme will be a Dawn Chorus Walk and a Bat Walk at dusk for local wildlife enthusiasts led by the London

Wildlife Trust team - something for the early bird and the night owl! Paul Ewen, author of the celebrated comic novel ‘Francis Plug: How To Be A Public Author’ will lend his wry wit to the festival, joining us at Belair House on Sat 14th May. This is just a flavour of the line-up for this year's Festival, with much more on offer over the 10 days of its duration, including the always popular and well-attended Festival Fair, Love West Dulwich Fair and Dulwich Park Fair all of which will provide free entertainment for all ages. Dulwich Festival Director, Alpha Hopkins, said: “We have a truly fantastic line-up of events for everyone to enjoy, from the Scandinavian Soundaround for the musicians in your family – to interactive theatre performances for all age groups including one about Albert Einstein! “There really is something to suit all; kick off your shoes and dance with Nedwardo and the Rumbanauts, or later in the week with Gerard and the Watchmen then stroll through the area and catch the wealth of art on offer in Artists’ Open House or just relax at one of the fantastic Fairs each weekend which are completely free and fun for all.” Further information on all Festival events, venues and dates can be found at: www.dulwichfestival.co.uk/ Twitter @DulwichFestival www.facebook.com/DulwichFestival/ SE23 - April 2016 | 21

SE23 Councillors

Freedom of the London Borough of Lewisham

T

o many residents, the workings of Lewisham Council must appear as a daily round of meetings where councillors and officers share local and national government legislation and policy. This is what happens, as ensuring the successful operation of a large organisation takes much dedication and effort on the part of both arms of the council. That there are many meetings it is true, but within the council calendar there are some highlights. They include the Annual General Meeting where invited residents, our MPs and council partners join councillors and officers to mark the beginning of the new municipal year and to review the old. Another highlight is when the Council bestows the Freedom of the Borough to an individual. This honour is the highest honour that the council can bestow, and it is awarded to “persons of distinction and persons who have, in the opinion of the council, rendered eminent services to the borough.” This honour has been bestowed to only 13 people, with 6 taking place since I was first elected in 1998. Our Freemen and Freewomen range from Alan Milner-Smith OBE, former Town Clerk and CEO (1971), Council Leaders Fred Winslade (1975) and Andy Hawkins (1990), Councillors Daisy Hurran (1985) and Les Eytle (2007), dignitaries Desmond Tutu (1990) Terry Waite CBE (1992) Sybil Phoenix OBE (1996) and Dame Cecily Saunders (2000). Our more recent recipients are Dame Erica Piennar, former head of Prendergast School (2013) and Baroness Doreen Lawrence (2014). Our most recent recipients from 2015 are Bridget Prentice, Lewisham East MP for 18 years, who will receive her award in Spring 2016, and Dame Joan Ruddock DBE, Lewisham Deptford MP for 28 years, and whose admission ceremony was held in Lewisham’s Council Chamber on the evening of 4th March 2016. It was a moving ceremony, as Lewisham’s Mayor, Sir Steve Bullock, the Rt. Hon Harriet Harman QC MP and councillors paid tribute to Joan’s

26 | SE23 - April 2016

distinctive service to the borough and her enormous commitment to her constituents. Before she became a Lewisham MP, Joan worked for Shelter and then during her time at Reading’s Citizens’ Advice Bureau she was elected Chair of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament. It was therefore very fitting that the icing adorning Joan’s celebration cake was the iconic CND logo. The scroll containing the recommendation for Joan’s admission has been illuminated on vellum depicting specific images of Joan’s life, and was presented in a perspex and silver casket by the Mayor to Joan. This honour adds to Joan’s record of achievement in politics as she was appointed Dame Commander of the British Empire in the 2012 New Year Honours in recognition of her public and political services, especially for women. Joan’s response in respect of the honour accord ed to her by the London Borough of Lewisham was very moving as she described highlights and lowlights of nearly three decades of her Lewisham memories including the New Cross Fire. Following this special evening, I look forward to hearing Bridget Prentice’s memories of Lewisham at the council’s next admission ceremony.

Financial Matters

Wendy’s Story

S

ingle Mum Wendy’s symptoms started when she slowly started losing interest in eating at the beginning of 2014. I got on with life as usual but it was only when my sister asked me how I had lost so much weight that I realised with a start that I had dropped two stone in the last 3 months. “After the initial feelings of euphoria, I looked back and came to understand that my usual healthy appetite had disappeared. I was skipping meals without even realising it. When I made a concerted effort to eat I found food hard work. It was time to visit my GP. “Numerous tests later, I was diagnosed with the early stages of bowel cancer. Luckily, it had been diagnosed and caught in the early stages. I however had to take lots of time off work to go through tests, which led to invasive biopsies and finally chemotherapy. My life had taken a complete U-turn without warning. “My Mum was my rock. She moved into my flat and took charge of the kids. She treated me like her little girl and cared for me during my worst moments. I worked for a small but busy graphic design company and my unreliability took its toll. My boss had no choice but to take someone else on to replace me and I was out of a job. “It’s not always the stress of being unwell that breaks you. It’s the chain reaction of events that hit you as a consequence of your illness that can totally wreck your life. When you’re seriously poorly, you want life to pause and wait for you to get better, but it doesn’t work like that. Whilst writhing in agony in my sick-bed, I also had to contend with no income and the miserable prospect of being chucked out of my home through mortgage arrears. My life was spiralling out of control right in front of my eyes. All the fight left me and the prospect of death begun to look like a blessing. My Mum could do nothing but pray.

30 | SE23 - April 2016

“After months of misery, I received a phone call from my financial adviser asking why my personal pension had fallen into arrears. I wept as I told him my story. After I had finished pouring my heart out, there was a long pause and then he said these words I will never forget:” “I think you might have critical illness cover. Let me check it out and get back to you.” “He called the next day and told me that I had been paying £55 a month for life and critical illness cover. This would pay off my mortgage on diagnosis of a critical illness such as cancer. The policy was in arrears but it was still valid and I could claim! Best of all, I didn’t have to die to get the money! I laughed for the first time in months and even jumped out of bed to do a little dance! “After completing a claim form, the insurance company paid off my mortgage completely and left me with enough to go on a recovery holiday. “I have now completely recovered. The holiday made all the difference. I take the credit for taking out a life and critical illness policy but my Mum firmly believes that her prayers were answered. Either way, the worst is behind me and I’m on my way to much better things.”

Garden Talk

A Perfect Spring Garden

T

here is much to be said about focusing your garden on one season. If you’re trying hard to create all year interest in a small garden or within one border you will end up with all year disappointment. Unless you have a very large garden where you have space for a Winter garden, Summer borders and a Woodland Spring walk, it always pays off to focus on one season, or even to narrow it to one or two months so that at least your garden is at its peak at one particular time. And if you need to choose one season, well, Spring, is a splendid choice. The advantage with banking on Spring is that a lot of trees and shrubs that bear beautiful Spring blossoms tend to also offer spectacular Autumn foliage (I’m thinking June berries, cherry trees, crab apples...). So you’ll get a double return on your investment. Summer will still be glorious with all the herbaceous plants coming back up, all the shrubs and trees in full leaf and summer bulbs and annuals to punctuate it all and fill the gaps. Here is a list of ingredients to turn your garden into a Spring celebration bursting out of life, colour, blossom and exhilarating scents. For an average-sized garden in our hood, say 12meters long x 6 meters wide, you’ll need: • Some evergreen structural planting to constitute the frame of the garden. • 3 Spring-flowering shrubs • One or two Spring-flowering climber • At least one small tree with Spring blossom or a row of 3 or 5. • Hundreds of Spring flowering bulbs • A sprinkle of Spring fragrance Choose from the selection below.

3 Best Spring Shrubs

Cercis chinensis 'Avondale’ The bare, upright shoots of this plant are covered in small clusters of deep pink, pea-like flowers in spring, creating a spectacular display just before the leaves start to emerge. Halesia Carolina A beautiful, deciduous tree with clusters of bellshaped white flowers that work well in semi shade, especially when underplanted with seasonal bulbs. Exochorda x macrantha “ The Bride” Stunning pure white bloom that goes on for 6 weeks in April and May. It can be trained as a wall shrub. 34 | SE23 - April 2016

3 Best Spring Climbers • Clematis macropetala • Clematis alpine • Akebia quinata - Exquisite and underrated climber with chocolate-scented deep burgundy flowers.

3 Best Spring Scents • • •

Osmanthus burkwodii French lavender, flowers earlier than English Lavender but blends well for a prolonged effect. Hyacinth orientalis

3 Best Spring Blossom Trees • Orchard trees • June Berries (Amelanchier lamarckii or canadensis) • Magnolias

3 Best Spring Bulbs Use them at the base of trees or clear stemmed shrubs, in drifts or clusters and fill your pots and window boxes with them. Tulips So many colours, shapes to choose from, there are tulips to please everybody’s tastes, some of them are even beautifully scented. Scilla sibirica Easy peasy bulbs perfect to naturalise a section of your lawn Fritillaria meleagris Such pretty little things! Now there is no need to long for Summer, THIS is perfect. Spring has sprung! Barbara Samitier - Garden Designer www.barbarasamitiergardens.co.uk

Visits and Walks

Monday 11 April Directed by Nanni Moretti with Michael Piccoli and Nanni Moretti.

Monday 25 April 11am-12.30pm £20, Friends £18 The RIBA headquarters at 66 Portland Place has one of the finest original art deco interiors in London. Our private tour will take us round all areas of the building, including the library, and there will be an opportunity to see some of the rare items from RIBA’s unique collections.

This tells the story of Cardinal Melville who suddenly finds himself elected as the next Pope. Never the front runner and caught off guard, he panics as he’s presented to the faithful in St Peter’s Square. To prevent a world crisis, the Vatican’s spokesman calls in a psychoanalyst, who is neither religious nor committed, to find out what is wrong with the new Pope and solve the problem. But Cardinal Melville is adamant – he does not want the job!

The Last Word – Jonathan Sale Jonathan Sale is a journalist and author of Telling Tales out of School – a miscellany of celebrity schooldays, which was based on a long-running interview series in The Independent. He has also written for The Times, The Guardian, Evening Standard and Daily Telegraph. How long have you lived in the area? Can it really be 42 years?

What brought you here? The estate agent’s blurb. This made our house seem even more wonderful than it is. And missed out the bits like the ropey roof which was calling out “Help me!” (We did.)

What has changed most during that time? The road surface – Honor Oak Rise was at first “unadopted” by the council, ie consisted of gravel which was washed away down Forest Hill Road when it rained.

What do you most value about the area/street you live in? One Tree Hill; my garden backs on to it. A signpost at the top points to “Ruth Sale Rise”, the steep row of steps named in honour of my late wife.

The one thing you couldn’t do without? My bicycle. Since I gave the car to my partner Diana, it’s a much faster journey over the 10.74 miles to her house in Gospel Oak, NW5.

arm twisted very nicely, I’m Chair of the Residents’ Association and also of the local ward of the Labour Party.

Do you know your neighbours?

Where’s your favourite place to walk?

Yes, particularly Paul and Di. We have a deal: they invite me to the most magnificent meals – and I promise I really am going to invite them back any day now.

One Tree Hill, of course. That’s me over there in the brambles, trying to find our dog who is snuffling through tiny canine routes in the undergrowth.

What is your favourite shop?

The most famous person you’ve seen or met?

Rye Books in Upland Road. It must be good - it stocks my book!

I’ve interviewed two of the Monty Python team: Michael Palin and Terry Jones. Terry lived two miles away in Camberwell when his brother had the house next door to mine; he could keep an eye on us both through the high-powered telescope in his study.

What is your secret ambition? To get my partner to join me in Honor Oak - but it may well be me who sells up and joins her in Gospel Oak. I’m working on the blurb for the estate agents: “Wonderful house with roof that keeps out rain …”

Do you belong to any groups? I’m on the committee of Friends of One Tree Hill and on their workdays I snip twigs with clippers (under extremely close supervision). Having had my 40 | SE23 - April 2016
