Multi Stem Trees for Urban Gardens

Garden Talk with Janine Winlaw | Instagram @janinewinlaw

H

owever small your garden, planting at least one tree will help add seasonal interest with blossom or autumnal foliage, height and shade. Multi-stems in particular make a great architectural focal point as a specimen or plant several for more of a woodland feel. The lovely, natural shape is created by cutting the trees right back and leaving them to grow multiple stems. Underplant your multi-stem with grasses such as Hakonechloa macra, en masse or shade lovers such a hellebores, epimedium, brunnera and pulmonaria, combined with bulbs such as crocuses. Naturalistic umbels such as Anthriscus sylvestris look pretty too as do. Here’s our pick:

Crataegus persimilis ‘Prunifolia’ A lovely deciduous tree has a neat, rounded canopy. It has a long season of interest with clusters of white flowers in late spring and early summer bright red fruit in late summer and fabulous autumn leaves.

Parottia Persica If it’s autumn colour you’re after, this tree is the one to go for, as the leaves turn a breathtaking yellow, then orange and finally fiery red. The bark also makes an attractive feature in winter. It can get fairly big so best for larger gardens.

Betula Birches are a popular as multi-stems. As well as the white-barked Himalayan birch, B. utilis ‘Jacquemontii’, my favourite is the more pinkybarked B. albosinensis ‘Fascination’.

Amelanchier lamarckii This small tree works well as a multi-stem for small gardens as it doesn’t get too big. It has gorgeous white blossom in spring and fab autumn colour.

Prunus serrula A pretty cherry, this looks stunning as a multi-stem with its mahogany peeling bark shining in the winter months. It has small white flowers in the spring and good autumn colour.

Malus ‘Evereste’ 12 | SE23 - April 2022

This is a beautifully shaped small crab apple with excellent spring blossom, good autumn colour, and masses of orange-yellow fruits through the winter.

Cercis canadensis 'Forest Pansy' This pretty spreading tree has stunning bright pink flowers on bare stems in spring followed by stunning deep purple heart-shaped leaves in summer with bronze foliage in autumn.

Watercress Soup Recipes from Suzanne James | www.suzannejames.co.uk

W

atercress is one of the oldest known leaf vegetables eaten by humans. It is part of the cabbage family, and is related to garden cress, mustard, radish and wasabi! A 100-gram serving of raw watercress contains 11 calories, being particularly rich in vitamin K, but also significant amounts of vitamin A, C, B6 plus Riboflavin, Calcium and Manganese. In fact, it is really something of a superfood, as research has shown that amongst many other benefits it helps to stop and slow skin ageing, lowers blood pressure, improves eye health, gives you a stronger immune system and improves bone health and density – the list goes on and on! So you can make and enjoy this lovely soup, AND feel virtuous – what’s not to like?! Preparation 20 minutes Cooking time 20 minutes Serves 4

Ingredients • • • • • • • • • • • •

A splash of olive oil 25g butter 1 onion, chopped 1 leek, chopped 1 celery stick, chopped 2 cloves garlic, chopped 1.2 ltr chicken or vegetable stock 450g potatoes, peeled and diced 4 bunches of watercress, washed and chopped freshly grated nutmeg black pepper 200ml double cream

Method 1) Heat the butter in a large heavy-based saucepan. Add the onion, garlic, leek and celery and fry gently, stirring, until softened, around 5 minutes, taking care not to let them brown. 2) Add the stock and potatoes and bring to the boil. Simmer for 15-20 minutes until the potatoes are tender. 3) Add the watercress and simmer for 2-3 minutes. 14 | SE23 - April 2022

4) Blend the soup in a food processor until smooth. Add the cream and blend. 5) Gently reheat the watercress soup, check the seasoning and serve.

Daydreaming: Magic Minute Inspiration

Fitness tips with Leanne Spencer | www.bodyshotperformance.com

I

t is a question I am getting asked on a regular basis: “How to get more energy? Or how to remain energised throughout the day?” This month I will be giving you a tip on how to get more energy into your day and it may be a surprising one. In fact, it is something that I haven’t talked much about, despite the fact I do it every day. It is the idea of daydreaming, and how a magic minute of mind wandering can boost your energy levels.

Daydreaming: The Good and The Bad For a long time, daydreaming has had a bad reputation and indeed, past studies have stated that a wandering mind is an unhappy mind. There’s a huge amount of pressure on us to stay focused and not get distracted by our thoughts. From an early age, daydreaming is discouraged as our full attention is required for essential learning. Therefore, it’s in our nature to feel stressed when our thoughts are turned away from the task in hand. More recently, however, science suggests that daydreaming can be extremely useful when done correctly.

What is Pleasant Daydreaming? Though the research is young, it’s clear that there is a good and bad way to let your mind wander. Findings show that emotional content can predict your subsequent mood. An easy example of this would be how thinking about a loved one or looking forward to something that is going to happen can make you happy, whereas rumination (replaying negative past experiences) can lead to feelings of depression. Often referred to as intentional daydreaming, thinking for pleasure encourages your brain to relax, helping you to decompress, and reducing levels of stress and anxiety. Pleasant daydreaming also increases productivity by promoting a more abstract thought process, enhancing your creative ability to “think outside the box” when problem-solving. What is going is that the problem-solving part and the creative part of the brain are working in tandem. This allows you to access information that was deeply buried before. 16 | SE23 - April 2022

Learning to Enjoy Thinking If I am between calls, or waiting to start a meeting, I allow my eye drift over to the window, and I daydream. This takes me away from that screen for just a moment to think about something else. I call this a magic minute, a small opportunity for me to relax and refresh my brain. Though I am not completely disconnected from the person I am about to speak to, or my objectives for that call, it is enough to give me that sliver of energy to enhance focus. So, why don’t you try it out: look out of your window, observe what is going on, be present in the moment. It may be once an hour, or just organically, whenever you are in between tasks, or you realise you have got 10 minutes free. This is one small thing that is simple and easy to implement to inject more energy into your day.

7:30pm- 8:30pm. The Dulwich Society’s Spring garden talk this year is by Fergus Garrett, head gardener at Great Dixter and one of the UK’s most influential gardeners. Fergus will explain how to choose the right plants that offer contrasting shapes, textures and foliage from different seasons to produce multi-layered long season communities. The talk is being given in association with Bell House Dulwich, with any surplus going towards garden activities at Bell House. Tickets £7 – book through www.bellhouse.co.uk/events

Financial Matters

With Akwasi Duodu | akwasi@sterlingandlaw.com | www.sterlingandlaw.com

Can I gift my home to my children to avoid inheritance tax? Taxed to Death We spend our lives paying all sorts of taxes. Income tax and national insurance on your earnings, income and capital gains tax on your savings. Stamp duty when you buy your house, council tax to live in it. Car tax, fuel duty, value added tax; excise duty and corporation tax if you run your own business. And after paying all those taxes during your lifetime, you are expected to pay inheritance tax when you die – there is just no escape! None of these taxes are popular, but inheritance tax is without question the most loathed of all. Is it fair to be taxed again on your taxed wealth after your death? Many don’t think it is and believe inheritance tax should be abolished. With house prices having pushed many ordinary people’s estates over the inheritance tax threshold, one of the most common questions I get asked as a financial adviser is “Can I gift my house to my children to avoid inheritance tax?” Yes, it can be done, but it certainly isn’t straightforward. There are pros and cons, and these should be considered carefully before proceeding. If your estate is worth more than £325,000 or £650,000 for married couples, careful planning may be necessary to avoid your children paying 40% inheritance tax on the difference when you die.

Gifting Your Home Of all your assets, your home is the asset most likely to push you over the inheritance tax threshold. Gifting your home to your children is therefore a natural consideration. The good news is that you could gift your home to your children and if you lived for at least seven years after the gift was made, it would be removed from your estate and no inheritance tax would be due. This arrangement is called a potentially exempt transfer and becomes a fully exempt transfer after seven years. This all sounds simple enough but there are some pitfalls to be aware of. To erase the 20 | SE23 - April 2022

inheritance tax liability completely, the gift must be made unconditionally. If the parents benefited in any way from the property, the gift would be deemed a “gift with reservation of benefit” or ‘GROB’ and would remain in the estate. This means that if you decided to gift your home to your children but continued to live in the property, the gift would fail. The only way to get around moving out completely would be to rent the property back from your children and pay rent at the market rate. If you paid less than the market rate, the house could remain in your estate and would be subject to inheritance tax. Your children would of course have to pay income tax on the rent received. Alternatively, you could gift half the house to your children and split the bills evenly. This way, their half of the house would not be subject to inheritance tax though the rent would still be taxable. Remember, in both scenarios, you’d have to live for seven years before the gift would be deemed complete.

Selling Your Home Cheaply to Your Children One alternative would be to sell your home cheaply to your children. The discount on the property would be treated as a gift and would be exempt from inheritance tax after seven years. Bear in mind however, that there would be stamp duty for your children to pay in purchasing the property and you could end up paying capital gains tax if the property wasn’t your main residence.

Equity Release to Reduce Inheritance Tax Equity release mortgages allow you to release funds from your home. The funds released could be used for a number of reasons. You could spend it yourself or gift it to your children to help them get on the property ladder, for example. Any such gifts would be subject to the seven-year rule after which the gift would fall out of your estate. This method is becoming more popular and is proving quite effecting in inheritance tax planning. Nonetheless, inheritance tax planning is an area riddled with pitfalls, traps and drawbacks. Our advice would be to seek independent financial advice before proceeding. With careful planning, it might just be possible to escape some or all of the most unpopular tax in the country.

Teaching a Chin Rest Pets Corner with Leonie St Clair | www.londondogstraining.co.uk

T

here’ll often come a point in your dog’s life when you need him to stay still while something is ‘done’ to him; this could be vaccinations, ear, and eye care, or even grooming. Teaching your pup, a chin rest can be a great way to get him to learn to stay in one position while procedures are underway. There are many ways to train this, the version here is inspired by Pat Koven and teaches the dog to target on cue.

Preparation Have high value soft treats, and make sure you identify a comfortable position and height at which your dog can rest their chin (perhaps placing a rolled- up towel on a chair or similar).

Chin rest onto palm of hand • Hold an open hand palm up just slightly below your dog’s nose. With your other hand hold a treat at the edge of your upturned hand, furthest from your dog’s nose. To encourage your dog to lean forward onto your palm you may have to hold the treat a little further away. • Hold your upturned palm steady and as your dog reaches to get the treat slightly lower the treat so your dog puts his muzzle onto your palm to get nearer to the food. When you feel his chin on your palm say ‘yes’ and gently give him the treat. • Repeat a number of times and start to add a cue like ‘chin’ as your dog rests his muzzle in your palm. • After a number of repetitions now open your palm at chin level, give the cue ‘chin’ and see if your dog performs the muzzle rest. If he does start toggling back and forth with each go, first counting to 1 and rewarding, next to 3, then to 2. Each time give a treat if your dog keeps his muzzle in place.

Move the behaviour onto a towel or other object • In the real world you’ll need both hands to deliver medications or similar. So, you want the dog to station his muzzle onto something and hold still. • Try some soft rolled or folded material to pad the edge of a table or chair. For very small dogs you’ll need a low box. Ensure it is a nice height that is 22 | SE23 - April 2022

comfortable for your dog, without him struggling or straining to rest his muzzle. • Put your upturned palm onto the padding. • Repeat the process of giving the cue and getting your dog to rest his muzzle on your palm. Toggle durations and reward each time. • Now place your upturned palm behind the rolled material, at the edge furthest from your dog’s nose. Repeat your cue- the idea is that the dog stretches his muzzle forward across the rolled padding to reach your palm. As his muzzle skims or rests on the material say ‘yes’ and reward. • Repeat this adding duration slowly, toggling between longer and shorter. You may need to raise or lower the height of the rolled material to make it more accessible. It will help to at first to offer a treat below the level of the rolled material, to encourage the dog to lower his muzzle onto the material. The final stages involve building duration of the chin rest and then slowly adding in ear and eye inspections and appropriate implements. Use of reward is crucial each time. Be patient.

Linking Lives Crofton Park

L

inking Lives Crofton Park (LLCP) is a befriending scheme that aims to confront and alleviate the effects of loneliness in the community. It operates from St Saviour’s church, Brockley Rise and has over 30 volunteers who help around the same number of isolated clients. Although originally set up as a Christian charity, most of the volunteers don’t come from a Church background and we welcome people to the scheme of all faiths or none! My name is Sam and I’m the LLCP project coordinator and I have been for the last year and a half. I took over the role from the previous coordinator, Alma, who must be credited for the success of the scheme as she set it up and put so much energy and enthusiasm into it. My job week to week is to meet loads of lovely volunteers and introduce them to the scheme and then match them with an appropriate client or ‘link-friend’. The link-friends are referred to us by GPs or social prescribers who feel like their patient could do with more social stimulation. It’s my job to go round and meet the potential link-friend, talk to them and make a suitability assessment, and then connect them to one of our brilliant volunteers, who will usually visit them once a week for 30 minutes to an hour. Over the pandemic this befriending happened mostly over the phone, and it is a lovely relief to be able to visit people in their homes and enjoy the spark of face-to-face contact again. I love meeting such a diverse mix of generations, professions, backgrounds in the role and I believe the volunteers and link-friends get this out of the scheme too as they have a chance to meet different people from their community. We are always on the lookout for new volunteers so send me an email or call for a chat (details at the bottom)! Likewise, if you know someone

who could benefit from a bit more company or is suffering from loneliness at all just give me a call or make a formal referral on our website: www.linkinglives.uk/project/croftonpark. Here, you can also find more information about the scheme. LLCP has been going for about 5 years and some of our original volunteers are still with us. We try to meet as a group of volunteers once a month at the Brockley Jack Pub for a drink and a catch up about our experiences on the scheme and life generally. There’s now a new Linking Lives scheme that has just sprung up in Bellingham and is just getting going and we have been in contact to share ideas and strategies. We apply for outside funding regularly from government or businesses, but befriending schemes like ours cost money to run. Please do get in touch if you would like to donate in anyway or know any businesses or funds that might be interested in supporting LLCP. Getting people in the community back together is now more important than ever! LLCP Coordinator: Sam Story Email: croftonpark@linkinglives.uk Phone: 07561 287620

Thursday 28 April: Jon Newman: John Ruskin and South London 7pm – 8pm. Join Jon Newman for a fascinating look at John Ruskin and his place in our local history. Jon Newman’s new book, Sunset over Herne Hill, John Ruskin and South London seeks to set the record straight on one of South London’s most important residents. In spite of Ruskin’s national and even international reputation during the Victorian period, and despite ceaseless foreign travel, academic posts at Oxford and work for London museums and galleries – Herne Hill was the place in which he grew up and where he would continue to live into old age. Sunset over Herne Hill explores Ruskin’s local preoccupations: his antipathy to railways, his difficult relationship with the Crystal Palace, his campaign for a Gothic revival in architecture and the enduring importance to him of the natural world. It also looks at the way in which Ruskin has been since commemorated and the creation of Ruskin Park. The book concludes with an examination of the social and historical context of Herne Hill and Denmark Hill in the nineteenth century and the extent to which Ruskin and his family were integrated, or not, within its suburb. Jon Newman is a writer and archivist who both works in and writes about South London. His book River Effra, South London’s Secret Spine was the first comprehensive history of that vanished river and is a perennial Dulwich Books bestseller!
