abies are born ready to play, and water is a wonderful, natural sensory play area, where your baby can learn and have fun – especially in the summer. Giving your baby water confidence is the best way you can prepare them for swimming and being safe in the water for life.

Newborns Having spent nine months suspended in fluid in the womb, babies generally love the liberating sensation of floating freely in warm water and it’s never too early to get them in a pool - as long as the water’s warm enough, above 30 degrees for a baby older than 12 weeks (or heavier than 12lbs), and above 32 degrees if they’re younger or smaller. Popping on a warming wetsuit can really help those babies who feel the cold.

Now your baby is more active, bath time starts to be an altogether more splashy experience! Encourage your baby to splash and kick. Trying showing them how to pour water from one cup to another, or use a watering can to sprinkle it.

Heading to the beach? It’s safe to take your baby in the sea, although it’s not recommended for babies under six months because of the water temperature and saltiness. Be aware of waves which can knock little ones over, so keep hold of them at all times, even if the water seems calm. You should stay in the shallows and make sure you don’t stay in too long.

Toddlers And Beyond Baths, paddling pools and sprinklers, your toddler will love water however it comes! You can buy all sorts of toys for bath times– boats, foam letters, crayons for drawing – but empty plastic bottles, pots and cups are just as good for pouring and experimenting. You can also teach your little one to blow bubbles and try making different sounds under the water. Older babies and toddlers enjoy songs and water toys like plastic ducks and fish. If your child can walk, they may enjoy playing in the water where they can touch the bottom. Keep the mood light and let your toddler dictate the pace.

Mussels Three Ways

his month the Hectic Host has good news for lovers of shellfish. It seems that the old adage that one should not eat shellfish when there is NOT an R in the month is little more than out dated folklore. The saying, that can be traced back to the 16th century, referred originally only to oysters and is from a time predating refrigeration; so by the time the oysters made it from the sea to your table during the spring and summer months you would be wise to avoid them. That said it is not a good idea to forage mussels during the warmer months, low tides can carry higher levels of toxins. The seafood sold today from any of our wonderful fishmongers (F. C. Soper in Nunhead and Moxons in East Dulwich) is perfectly safe anytime of the year. Mussels are packed with nutrients; they are high in B12 vitamins and provide a readily absorbed source of many other B & C vitamins, amino acids, vital minerals including iron, manganese, phosphorus, potassium, selenium and zinc. This is good news as the dish we intend serving to guests this month could not be more simple. We suggest taking three steaming pots to the table and allow people to share.

Moules Marinères Take 2 kilos of mussels and place in a bowl of cold water, if any float throw them away. If any are open and you cannot close them by pinching together, throw them away too. Pull out the beards and remove any barnacles and bits with a paring knife. Finely chop one large onion and fry in butter in a pan until soft, and 100 ml of white wine and pour in the mussels and cover the pan. Cook for 5 minutes until all the mussels are open and stir in 2 tablespoons of cream. I have discovered by mistake that leftover champagne makes a delicious base for the stock, it does not matter if it is flat or not, just pour it in. The dryness compliments the richness of the cream perfectly. 12 | SE23 - August 2016

Moules au Curry This may sound a little odd to us but it is on the menu alongside Moules Marinières in every bistro in France. Follow the recipe exactly the same as above but add mild curry powder at the same time as adding the cream.

Moules à la Normande Follow the initial recipe but add one finely chopped apple to the onion as you fry it in the butter. Instead of white wine add 100 mls of Calvados and cook in the same way adding cream at the end. Instead of starch heavy fried potatoes – which are delicious dunked in the mussel sauce - cut sweat potatoes into chunky chip sized pieces and lay on baking paper on a baking tray. Place in an oven preheated to 200 degrees and bake for 30 minutes, turning a couple of times throughout. Serve with a chilled mug of beer or Normandy cider and lots of brown bread.

Salad Nicoise For Two

1 ∞ Cups Double Cream 250g Small New Potatoes 150g Green Beans 1 Caramelised Onion 10 Quails Eggs Hard Boiled Eggs (peeled) 200g Rocket 5 Tbsp Filippo Berio Olive Oil 150g Sun Dried Tomatoes 2 Tbsp Balsamic Vinegar 350g Fresh Tuna Juice ∞ Lemon Garden Radishes are optional

Dressing (can be adjusted to taste) • • • • • •

50g Black Olives 5 Anchovy Fillets 1 Garlic Clove Juice ∞ Lemon 4 Tbsp Filipo Berio Olive Oil 2 Tbsp Balsamic Vinegar

Method 1) Put the dish(es) you plan to use into the fridge for about an hour before you start to chill. 2) Make the dressing. Tip the olives, anchovies and garlic into a large mortar and mash with a pestle until you have a very rough paste. Scrape into a bowl, if you like, stir in the lemon juice, olive oil and vinegar, then set aside. (This can be adjusted according to your own taste). 3) Cut the onions into quarters and the tomatoes in half and cook them in the oven on a low heat – around 1300C for 20minutes. Cut the potatoes in half and part boil them. Cook the beans in boiling salted water until tender – they should have a slight crunch. Drain, tip into iced water, then drain again and set aside. 14 | SE23 - August 2016

4) Halve the potatoes and heat 2 tablespoons oil into a grill pan. Place the potatoes cut-side down in the pan and sizzle for about 4 minutes until the potatoes gain grooves. 5) To cook the tuna, place a non-stick frying pan over a high heat, then turn the heat down to medium and add 1 tablespoon of Filippo Berio olive oil. Season the tuna generously, then sear for 4 minutes, leaving it undisturbed in the pan to brown. Turn over and continue to cook for 4 minutes on the other side. This will give you very rare tuna. For well done Tuna cook for an additional 4minutes on each side. Make sure you let the tuna rest for a few minutes before serving. 6) To serve, whisk the remaining oil and vinegar with the lemon juice in a small bowl and toss in the remaining ingredients apart from the tuna which should be thinly sliced on top of the salad.

Lark in the Park 2 - the sequel

erry Vale’s most recent assembly took place in our ward’s much loved Mayow Park on 18th June 2016. Despite the overcast weather the park was packed with stalls, community information, the ward councillors and most importantly, our local residents. For fitness lovers, there was an outdoor gym demo, Sydenham Tennis with taster sessions for youngsters, boxercise tasters and croquet on the bowling green, while also being able to enjoy our resident cricket team in action. Amongst the stalls we had our Young Lewisham Project with handmade wooden artefacts and free bicycle check-ups, complemented by the Met Police with bike security marking, and they brought along their own police cadets for an energetic fitness workout display. For pet lovers, Battersea Dogs and Cats Home and the PDSA were available for dog microchipping and pet health advice and a “Let’s talk about Dogs” presentation. For the youngsters there was face painting and storytelling, Bubble and Bounce play followed by a Teddy Bears’ picnic and an ice cream van! Information was also available from local community groups representing Forest Hill’s Women’s Institute, with their wonderful biscuits, cakes, and home produce; our Forest Hill Society and the Friends of Mayow Park. Housing information was provided by Lewisham Homes and L+Q, with AgeUK supplying advice via Community Connections. One of the highlights of the day was the launch and competition for The Big Mix Up. They are a collective of students from Forest Hill School who have come together as a group to create a positive impact in their community and to help people. As young people living in Forest Hill, their manifesto is that it is important to address the negative perceptions of young people being “disrespectful” and older people being “hard to get on with”. Their remit was to collect recipes from local people, young and old, to celebrate that both generations have a lot to learn from each other and our similarities are greater than

our differences. I was pleased to be a panel judge at Forest Hill School to hear their project pitch as part of the Young Citizens Programme at the school. The panel was unanimous in selecting them as the winners and The Big Mix Up book and celebration began. On their stall at Lark in the Park 2 were muffins ready to be decorated with delicious icing, followed by a competition for the best decorated. When I collected my copy of the recipe book, I was very pleased to find that my favourite Chocolate Torte is included. We were fortunate to have Teatro Vivo Usherettes mixing with the crowd and interacting with them to get their opinions on our event. The feedback told us that it was felt to be really lovely and well attended, with a very positive and engaged atmosphere. Feedback after the event suggested that we include more stalls selling food and drink. I would like to thank all those involved and all who attended, and we are already making plans for 2017’s Lark in the Park3. Let’s hope the weather has improved by then. The Good, Bad & Ugly of BREXIT

he big question on everyone’s minds is – “What happens now that we have left the European Union?” After the initial shock of Brexit, it’s anyone’s guess what the long term effects will be on house prices, interest rates, investments and pensions and currency markets; not to mention jobs, the economy and a myriad of other important things. So what are good the bad and the ugly of Brexit from an IFAs perspective?

The Good Investments and pensions: Whilst many analysts predicted an all mighty stock market crash if BREXIT happened, the reality was somewhat different. The market wobbled a bit on day one of the announcement but solidified and strengthened thereafter, and has risen by as much as 10% since 27 June; great news for those with stocks and shares ISAs, pensions and equity based investments. The main reason for this was that a lot of the uncertainty was over and the markets now knew where we stood to a certain extent. We certainly face choppy waters ahead as and when the full consequences of our leaving Europe are revealed. Charles Scholefield from the Investment committee at Sterling & Law says, “Those invested in managed funds should see promising returns as fund managers take advantage of price swings and capitalise on value. Those invested in tracker funds which simply follow market indices should however brace themselves for a bumpy ride.”

The Bad The housing market: “If you think the property market was flat before Brexit, you should see it now!”, says one of my local Estate Agents. “Prior to Brexit, we had the fallout from the Buy to Let tax changes, which dampened the demand for one and two bedroom flats. Now, everyone seems to be sitting on the fence waiting to see what will happen next, now that we have left Europe.” This is of course understandable. Uncertainty frightens 26 | SE23 - August 2016

people. And when people are frightened, they delay making decisions. So how do we turn this into a positive? House prices in the UK are a good barometer to how well the economy is doing. If house prices are robust, the general interpretation is that things are pretty good economically, and this inspires confidence and therefore, spending. And spending is good for the economy. The government’s economists therefore have a vested interest in ensuring that house prices stay robust; especially in the long term. In the shorter term however, there are certain to be a few wobbles, which represents a great opportunity for those looking to buy. Furthermore, noises about interest rates going down even further can only be good news for the property market.

The Ugly The pound: Predictably, the pound has taken a pounding post Brexit. Anyone dealing internationally has already been affected as prices in the US and Europe would appear to have increased dramatically overnight. Holidays prices for example seem to have shot up, however, to steady demand, tour operators are compensating by artificially adjusting prices. Ironically, with the pound losing value, we may see an influx of visitors to the UK, which may not be such a popular phenomenon for those who voted out for anti-immigration reasons! Nonetheless, once things settle down, the pound should regain strength, though perhaps not to pre-brexit highs. In the words of Paul Getty, “Without the element of uncertainty, the greatest business triumph would be dull, routine and eminently unsatisfying.” Whether or not you subscribe to this is your decision. s well as planning your holiday wardrobe, a few hours work in the garden before you go away will go a long way to ensure you come back to a thriving garden.

Lawns Mow the lawn a few days before you leave but don’t cut it too short if the weather is hot and dry – long grass copes much better with drought than short grass. Edge with long handled shears to neaten it up and clear edges of weeds and areas for slugs to lurk in. If the grass is long when you get back keep your blades raised for the first few cuts. And don’t despair if it’s yellow. Grass is pretty tough and will soon green up again after a good downpour.

Containers Put your potted plants on saucers, or even something bigger like a paddling pool, to collect possible rainwater. (But check the forecast, as plants don’t like to be in standing water.) Soaked capillary matting can also get them through a week without being watered. Moving pots to semi shade can protect them against drying out and grouping them together will help them shade each other and share humidity. If there’s room, sink favourite plants into soil to keep them cool and drench the surrounding earth. A mulch of mini bark or grit will help keep the moisture in too, but water well first.

Borders Cut repeat flowering plants like cosmos and roses before you go away and give a lovely bouquet to a friend to ensure you come home to lovely blooms instead of a sea of fallen petals. If you’re away for three weeks remove all the flowers as well as the dead heads. Tatty looking hardy geraniums can be cut right back, as can nepeta and geum. With flowering spikes like delphiniums or penstemon, just cut off the spent flower stem. Weeds are easier to pull up when they’re small, so removing them before you go away is really worth it. Take care to dig out the whole root of perennial weeds such as thistle, bindweed and dandelion. Mulching your borders with bulky organic matter such as compost, well30 | SE23 - August 2016

rotted manure or bark will keep weeds down and moisture in – make sure you drench the soil first. Or just concentrate on newly planted or thirsty shrubs and perennials and don't worry so much about drought tolerant ones like iris, lavender and rosemary. If you go away at lot, think about growing more drought tolerant plants. As a rule grey/silver, small or fleshy leaved plants such as stachys, verbena and sedum will survive without much water once they’re established. If the forecast is for lots of rain, remember to protect plants like hostas from slugs – try organic wool slug pellets. Check stakes on tall perennials – a windy summer gale plus rain can quickly flatten your garden.

Fruit and veg Weeding should be a priority, go over with a hoe to remove weed seedlings and finish off by hand, weeding anything close to plants. Pick as much as you can from repeat flowering crop like peas and beans, removing all the pods and pick all the developing courgettes - otherwise you’ll come home to marrows galore. Water thoroughly before you go but ideally persuade a friend to come and pick in return for watering. Net brassicas to keep off cabbage white butterflies.
